racing heads to Portland

Australia’s biggest field of nitro cars is heading to one of the country’s prettiest racetracks with the Aeroflow Outlaw show heading to Fuchs South Coast Raceway Portland, Victoria for February 1. With a massive line-up of 11 nitroburning funny cars, the Portland track will rumble to the tune of some 44,000 horsepower with

each car producing approximately 4000 horsepower. Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car series manager Steve Bettes was pleased with the development of the event. “These cars will be like nothing the fans have ever seen before,” he said.

“Nitro racing is unique to drag racing and if you haven’t seen the spectacle of this type of drag racing

before – you can’t afford to miss it.”

The racing cars are one thing but a fan favourite from previous events was undoubtedly the Nitro Sheriff wheelstanding funny car. Powered by a supercharged hemi engine, the ‘Sheriff’ completes the entire eighth mile pass with a wheelstand.

“Everyone loves

the nitro cars but the kids love the wheelstanding car more than anything, with sparks and flames and the wheels in the air, it certainly is quite a show,” Bettes said.

The weekend action starts on Friday with sportsman support classes qualifying from 2pm to 7pm followed by the massive Skids for Wishes burnout

competition from 7pm to 9pm, entry is $15 on Friday.

The Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car Show features nitro racing and the wheelstander from 1pm Saturday and support classes from 10am.

Having a twenty month old in my house, I’m subjected to plenty of children’s television these days. I have to say I’m pretty disturbed by what our kids are sitting through. For those of you who don’t have children, or whose children are now grown up and watch other shows, you might have to Google some of these to see what I’m talking about.

Or you could have a huge night on the turps, invite all of your friends back to your place after leaving the licensed venue at about 6am and then have an all day kids television-athon.

the shows would make much more sense in this state. Let’s start with Yo Gabba Gabba. Not only would this program be more enjoyable if you were intoxicated, I’m pretty sure the people making it are blotto. All of the characters are pretty weird but you don’t have to have much of an imagination to know that one of the characters looks like something that would be more appropriate on a hen’s night. Another one of little Shaquille’s favourites is Hi-5. I object to this show on several different levels.

For starters it seems completely un-Australian to me. We’re not a high five country as far as I’m concerned. It would be a heaps better show if it was called G’day and

they finished each episode giving kids the thumbs up with a can of VB in their other hand. Am I right, kids?

Apart from that objection they, like most children’s television actors, are way too enthusiastic. I object to enthusiastic people and I think they might be contributing to Shaquille’s grumpiness in the mornings.

Don’t most people get up in the morning feeling like they need more sleep. The last thing anyone needs is to be confronted with people jumping around with big stupid smiles on their faces.

It makes them look simple anyway.

We watch a little Dora

the Explorer from time to time. Personally I can’t understand what she’s saying. She might as well be talking a different language.

How about the fact that she’s got a map and a backpack that talk to her.

I have enough problems with family members who can’t stop talking without various other items in my house telling me what to do. “Lake, forest, chocolate hill! .Lake, forest, chocolate hill!” I particularly object to the Wiggles. I don’t see how you can replace three of your four band members and still think you can exploit children around the world.

They’re not the Wiggles anymore. They’re a cover band for children, doing all the Wiggle’s classics. I think the Wiggle who wanted to keep performing should have joined INXS. He’s looking for a band to keep performing with and they’ve been looking for a lead singer for many years now.

They can’t keep either of the names though; they’d have to come up with something new. I suggest Excess Wiggling. Sometimes Donna puts Sesame Street on. I really don’t like this one.

Plain and simple,I don’t trust puppets. I don’t care how cute you are Elmo. You’ve got a hand up your butt and that’s wrong. Curious George is another one of Shaq’s favourites. For those who don’t know the premise, there is a man who lives with his pet monkey. It didn’t end well for Michael Jackson and I don’t see it ending well for the man in the yellow hat.

Like I said, I don’t enjoy any of it but I’m going to persist with it because for those 20 minutes I’m not having to spot for a midget trying to scale a television, bookshelf, or china cabinet. If you’ve got a favourite kiddie’s show you think I’d enjoy, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

Beverley Mcllroy was given a brief reprieve from her volunteer role in the Rotary Coffee Van at Portland’s Australia Day celebrations so she could be announced as the 2014 Glenelg Shire Citizen of the Year. She joined other award recipients in celebrating Australia Day, with Portland one of three locations offering Glenelg Shire Council events. Ms Mcllroy was described by Mayor Cr John Northcott, who attended the Casterton celebrations, as a staunch advocate for equality in society and in the workplace, who has supported, mentored and encouraged young people to realise their full potential.

Cr Northcott said, with more than 40 years of service to the Portland Community, Ms Mcllroy was a very worthy recipient of this award. “In 2012 she was asked to join the State Advisory Panel that focuses on the delivery of Drug and Alcohol Services throughout Victoria,” he said. “This shows the high esteem that she is held in by her colleagues and those in State Government.”

The 2014 Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to Portland’s Miranda Jones, who has become an inspiring role model to youth, disadvantaged young people, and adults alike and has earned the respect

Shire hands out Australia Day honours and admiration from her peers. “Overcoming many adversities while growing up and taking on the role of carer for her siblings, due to her mother’s disability, this young citizen is a worthy recipient of this award,” Cr Northcott said.

“Through the Portland re-Engagement program she found the motivation to continue her schooling and hopes to complete her VCE in 2014 with the goal of becoming a psychologist. “She was previously a participant in the ‘Local Eyes’ photographic project coordinated by United Way Glenelg and gained one of the three Legacy positions Australia wide on a voyage with the Young Endeavour in 2013, travelling from Sydney to Melbourne along with 23 other young people, and she also participated in the 2013 Future Leaders of Industry Program, which cemented her love of psychology.”

For the first time a Senior Citizen of the Year was awarded, with two recipients deemed worthy of the recognition – June Holmes, who accepted her award in Casterton and Hazel Short, who accepted her award in Portland. “Following

careful consideration of the nominations received for the Senior Citizen of the Year 2014, the Australia Day Advisory Committee decided that there were two nominees who were equally worthy and the decision to split them was just too difficult,” Cr Northcott said.

“Mrs Holmes has dedicated her life to her community of Digby and family. “As a mother of four Mrs Holmes was involved in fundraising for school, football and netball clubs and now a grandmother of eight children and great grandmother of ten, she continues this involvement. “Over the years she has encouraged knitting for charities in Australia and overseas, cooks in support of all fund raising events at the hall, raises money for the Royal Children’s Hospital and supports the Cancer Council by raising funds particularly for breast cancer. “Meanwhile, Mrs

Short started as a Telecare volunteer at Portland District Health 26 years ago, making phone calls each fortnight to provide re-assurance and social support to Home and Community Care clients living at home. “Many other community organisations benefit from her help and these include Portland Cable Trams where she spends one day a week as a tram conductor, Portland Uniting Church as the convenor of the casserole bank and a Lifeline volunteer, Portland Senior Citizens at a bingo caller. “After the passing of her husband 10 years ago she formed a widow’s group, which meets group meets monthly for a meal, guest speakers and the social connection, and she continues to convene this group.” Finally, the Glenelg Shire 2014 Community Group of the Year was awarded to Portland Surf Life Saving Club. “From its beginnings at Henty Beach Portland in 1933, the Club has evolved to encompass a wide range of activities, including beach patrols, offshore rescue service, youth development, junior activities (nippers), training and assessment competition, to name a few,” Cr Northcott said. “The club has developed a professional working relationship with a range of emergency services to provide the area with a reliable and professional marine rescue service and the group continues to provide support and water safety to school groups from the district and further afield.

“Volunteering is a big part of Portland Surf Life Saving Club and that has continued for 80 years, fostering the community spirit of helping others, whether it be other clubs or community groups that need some extra safety or assistance in the water.”

At the Casterton Australia Day event, 10 shire residents were also welcomed by the Mayor as Australian Citizens after taking the Pledge of Commitment.

Exciting plans for Heywood Aquatic Service

Heywood pool users could one day be the envy of the shire with a uniquely designed interactive playground proposed as part of an overhaul of Glenelg Shire Council’s aquatic facilities. The long term plan would include a range of interactive aquatic and leisure features, including water sprays, large tipping buckets, water cannons and bubblers, with the hope of boosting the community’s usage of the out-dated facility. A review of the Heywood Outdoor pool,

completed as part of the Glenelg Aquatic Services Strategy at the end of last year, indicated that it was the least used of the three regional aquatic facilities. The strategy was prepared based on providing a network of complementary aquatic facilities and services across the shire, with it recognised that the unique characteristics of each facility and the community it served needed to be considered in any long-term future

direction taken by council. While the development of a viable Master Plan for all of council’s aquatic facilities must be achieved before any significant changes are set in place, Cr Northcott said he wanted to quash any suggestion that the Heywood facility wouldn’t remain a priority to council into the future. “It’s important that we boost numbers at the pool to ensure the facility is used to its full potential,” he said. “A consultation process found the pool was primarily used as a place to ‘cool off’ during summer months with little use

As well as the interactive playground, the future wish-list for the Heywood community, following the initial consultation, includes potential to retrofit the existing 50-metre pool, the creation of a multipurpose indoor program room, upgraded change and amenities and an upgraded reception area. During the winter months it’s proposed that the water be turned off to the interactive playground and the areas used as a dry playground. “This could be linked and supervised as part of the skate facility located adjacent to the current swimming pool and a small indoor community centre,” Cr Northcott said. “Such a facility would be an attractor to the Heywood township and would link to the success of the skateboard park. Cr Northcott said as part of any future Master Plan, developed from the current draft strategy, capital funding upgrades would need to be budgeted to continue to improve the water features and play equipment and maintain amenities, spectator facilities and outdoor relaxation and social surrounds. Glenelg Aquatic Services Strategy is currently on display at the Portland Council Chambers and on council’s website for community feedback. BORDERLINE SPEEDWAY Lines Steve Lines is the most successful local sprintcar driver of the past decade but his home track’s one stand alone title had always eluded him. But last Thursday night he broke the hoodoo and claimed his inaugural King’s Challenge title. Given Lines’ impressive, bordering on impeccable, form coming into the January 23 event, it would have almost been cruel if he had been denied top spot on the podium again.

started the A Main on the front row, with quick time man Kaeding off the pole, however it was Lines in the Hall Motorsport Wilson Trailer car who took the ascendency on the high banks of the Mount Gambier track. There were yellow flag stoppages, testing the concentration of all drivers but eventually Lines was able to hold out Kaeding to take the win from Cameron Gessner with American Brad Sweet fourth and Adelaide’s Luke Dillon rounding out the five. Shane Stewart in the Milwaukee Power Tools Monte Motorsport #7 retiring and the other unlucky #7 being the Eastcoast Pipelines Racing machine of Wednesday night’s Avalon winner, Robbie Farr, who had to pull out with a deflated left rear tyre midway through the affair. Australian Champ, James McFadden in the #1 Totally Workwear car was running toward the top five before a spin on a restart sent him rear of field. Racing at Warrnambool rounded out the Australia Day weekend.

Mount Gambier & District Tennis Assocaition can lay claim to being one of the strongest in South Australia after a hugely successful country carnival.

Uniting Church’s Rowan Williamson (pictured top right) claimed the Men’s Open singles title, defeating fellow Mount Gambier player Andrew vandenHurk (Gambier) in the semi finals before winning a tight final 9-8 over Scott Hughes, from the Hills Tennis Assocaition. Hughes secured an early break in the match to lead 3-1, before Williamson broke back mid set, and went on to win the match with a net-cord on match point in the tie-breaker, which he claimed 7-5. Mount Gambier was represented by three senior teams in the teams event - two division one men’s linbe-ups and a division one women’s team. Mount Gambier Tennis Association Green, which included Rowan Williamson, Dylan Childs, Bradley Mitchell and Denis Mathews finished second, defeating their fellow Mount Gambier team by four games along the way. .The Blue line-up included Andrew vandenHurk, Paul Griffin, Eddie Cook and Ian Hopes and finished the carnival in fourth place. Chloe Watson, Madeline Watson, Tessa Megaw and Jayel vandenHurk finished fifth. inb the women’s teams event. Both the Under 16 (pictured centre right) and 14 boys (pictured centre far right) finished runnerup in their respective events.

Will Cook, who was still eligibly for the Under 14 event, had an impressive carnival, going through undefeated in singles, while debutante Tom Snell lost only one match. Brandon Pitts and Bryce Radley rounded out the competitive team. In the individual junior events, the Mount Gambier players also put in a strong showing with Patrick Griffin (pictured top far right with the title runner-up) taking out the 12 and under boys singles title. The association also produced a number of runner-up performances, including Bradley Mitchell in the 16 and under boys singles; with Bradley also teaming with Brandon Pitts (pictured bottom right) to finish runner-up in the 16 and under boys doubles. SWIMMING Making With more than 50 personal best times and medals in four individual events and one relay, the Blue Lake Y Swim Club came away from the recent Superfish and SA Country Swimmings Championships thrilled with the efforts of their swimmers. Blue Lake Y had a contingent of 14 swimmers coached

by Colin Smith and captained by Jelena Carpenter and Brayden Walters, Bec Spicer and Adam Carpenter were the team managers. The championships, which were hosted by Murray Bridge, were held during the horror heatwave, resulting in changes to event times.

The Superfish competition, for swimmers aged 11 and under, saw seven Blue Lake Y swimmers hit the pool and bringing home 12 PBs in the process.

Allan Scott Medallist re-signs The Castec Rural Supplies have secured another big signing in preparation for the club’s South Conference title defence - with the club confirming that reigning Allan Scott Medallist Brad Hill will be returning to the Pioneers for season 2014. Brad was a significant member of the 2013 group, averaging 19.9 points per game, shooting 51.2% from the field, 8.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. “Having Brad back for the 2014 season, is a huge coupe for our casketball club,” said president Neil Boase.

“After playing a few games for us in 2012, Brad commited to the Pioneers full time in 2013, where a strong bond and drive for success was formed between our playing group and coaching staff”. Neil Boase praised the coaching staff and the playing group for their commitment to the club. “That commitment and drive has shown through in our discussion’s with all players and coaching staff are commited to going one further in 2014,” he said. Since departing Mount Gambier at the end of the 2013

season, Brad has been a part of the Sydney King’s roster competing in the NBL. At 27 years of age, Brad played his 200th NBL game in round three of the current NBL season.

Brad’s signings together with the earlier announcements of the returning Tom Daly, Matt Sutton, Lukass Blicavss and new American import, Damian Johnson, mean the Pioneers are on track to field another competitive unit in 2014. Brad will join the team and relocate to Mount Gambier when his

commitments with the Sydney King’s finish up, at this stage the Kings are sitting fourth on the league ladder, likely to be part of the 2013/14 NBL playoffs. The Pioneers will tip off the regular season at home against long time rival the Ballarat Miners on March 21.

motor hospital fundraiser a huge success

Portland District Health’s inaugural twilight summer market has been a success, raising almost $2500. The market received great support from stallholders and attracted hundreds of visitors on Friday January 17. The money will go towards plans to redevelop two rooms in the hospital’s sub-acute ward into a new special care room which will provide facilities for palliative care, caring for people with dementia and others needing close monitoring. A golf day on March 28 will also raise funds for the redevelopment and equipment and comfort items for the special care room and other areas within PDH. PDH CEO Chris Giles said the evening market was a great success with outside stall holders, service clubs and PDH staff and departments involved. “The weather was kind to us and the feedback from the public who attended and by others in the community has been extremely positive,” Ms Giles said.

“PDH would like to say a big thankyou to all who participated in any way, including preparations prior to the event and during the event itself.

About $2450 was raised. The market included cake stalls, jewellery, movie posters, plants, books, food stalls, fairy floss and a white elephant stall.
