food and wine event to set Cave Garden precinct alight

There has long been talk that Mount Gambier needs a flagship food and wine festival. Boasting winemakers, quality chefs, premium artisan producers and a strong cafe and

restaurant culture, South Australia’s largest regional centre has needed a way to showcase its food and wine and those that create it. On March 1, the hard work of a small organising

committee, will come to fruition with the unveiling of the city’s first genuine food and wine festival in some time – Fork & Cork. Mount Gambier’s Cave Garden precinct will

come alive with cooking demonstrations, wine tasting, cider tastings, master classes for the true connoisseur and a raft of entertainment. With the support of the Mount Gambier City Council, Grant District Council and government funding through the SA Tourism Commission, Fork & Cork, is set to become a regular fixture on the region’s festival calendar.

The festival has also managed to secure former Masterchef contestant turned author and TV presenter Justine Schofield (left) as the face of the festival, and Justine, along with respected Australian wine critic Nick Stock (above), headline the local showcase. Justine will wow the crowds with her cooking demonstrations, while Nick will head up master classes in pinot noir and cabernet. The cooking demonstrations and wine tastings don’t begin and end there though with four of the region’s most respected chefs also sharing their knowledge with the crowd. Simon Bowen, Ian Perry, Kirby Shearing and Mark Wright will be front and centre with some amazing cooking ideas and tips. All four have trained or worked alongside some of Australia’s and

Jaylee Waters has had some wonderful role models as she has built up a resume that would see her pursue her dream of life on the stage. Cristina d’Agostino, Belinda Howe, Euan Doidge – all fellow MJ graduates who have gone on to live their dream of making the performing arts a career. Jaylee is now set to follow in their footsteps – closely actually as she embarks on the same course Cristina and Belinda completed – a performing arts degree at the highly regarded Ballarat Centre of MNusic & The Arts.

Having finished her Year 12 studies at Grant High School last year, Jaylee is part of the quintet of MJ students heading off to pursue their dreams – Cooper Terry and Katarina Gajic to Tibor Ballet School, in Sydney, Steph Newton, to Ev & Bow, in Sydney and Sam Malseed, who is set to debut on the Channel 10 reality talent show So You Think You Can Dance Australia. Jaylee will be joined at Ballarat by another former MJ alumni, Kristi Malseed, who having studied at Brent Street Dance Studio in Sydney, is now set to expand her base with the musical theatre course as well.

Jaylee is your classic triple threat and anyone who has seen any recent Grant High School musicals or the inaugural Ovation Performing Arts Centre production, Chicago, would now she has all the skills – dancing, singing and acting. But it did all start with dance. “Mum put both my sister and I in dance class because we were so shy and she wanted us to meet new people,” Jaylee said. That was 14 years ago and it is only last year that the 17 year old slightly backed off her dance commitments. But if nothing else, the early experience of being on stage gave birth to a dream that has never waned and continues to grow stronger – Jaylee wants to be a performer, with musical theatre her primary target.

“I started competing when I was six and while I got normal nerves, I really loved being on stage,” she said. “It’s funny because I love performing in front of a massive audience but if I have to stand up in front of my class at school to say something I freak out.”

The singing came when she started doing song and dance as part of her MJ repertoire and as she looked to improve that part of her arsenal, Pamela Walker became her teacher

and the eisteddfods and singing competitions, and accolades, followed.

“I think the singing is my strongest but I will keep working at all three – it’s such a competitive industry, you just have to be the best you can be and then have something a little different about you as well,” Jaylee said. She has worked with Pamela for at least a decade and having now hit the stage in a few musicals knows

her voice is certainly up to the rigours of musical theatre. She is also rightly proud of her efforts in 2011 when she played the lead role in Chicago. Only 15 years old at the time, her performance belied her years. “It did feel good to take on a well known role and a mature role and to get such good feedback about how I did,” Jaylee said. cont. page 6

be cooking for myself and all that sort of thing - it’s exciting and a bit scary at the same time,” she said.

And while being on stage is her main focus, she is also a practical girl and she will explore teaching options, or marketing or management in the arts as a fall back. “Obviously I will do everything I can to end up as a performer but if not to teach people or to work around the industry in some way would be rewarding as well,” Jaylee said.

Brian chose Mount Gambier because of its size and potential for future growth through word of mouth. In early February, Brian began holding regular Sunday gatherings in Kingston, then six months later moved the Sunday meeting to Mount Gambier while still holding mid-week meetings in Kingston.

For the first few years the assembly met in various hired halls around the town before purchasing a hall on the corner of Wehl St North and McArthur St where the fellowship still meets today. Over the past 35 years the assembly has seen plenty of funny moments. In the early days of using hired halls, Brian was often seen driving around the Mount with a baptism tank on his trailer. One Sunday night a gust of wind blew the tank off the trailer, landing on the side of Commercial St West, where it was discovered by one of the assembly members on the way to work. The City Hall celebration will include an historical look at the past 35 years, musical entertainment and several speakers covering not only their past experiences, but also the relevance of Christianity into the future.

I’ve come to the conclusion over the last few weeks that democracy is not really as good as we’ve made it out to be over the last several centuries. In fact I’d go so far as to say it’s a flawed system and it’s time we gave up on it. Actually, I’m probably getting a bit carried away. In theory democracy isn’t a bad idea; all people have an equal right and ability to participate in the decision making of a country. Democracy is so slow though and too often we still end up with laws, decisions etc that just aren’t supported by the majority.

The problem also comes in when you realise how stupid most people are now.

If the majority of people are stupid then there is a greater chance that stupid decisions will be reached, stupid politicians will be elected and civilisation slowly gets eroded and eventually destroyed. We’ve spent the last hundred years or so rightfully making sure that everyone has the right to vote, be they Indigenous Australians,

women, migrants or even Victorians. Now we need to pull it back a little. We’ve made everyone’s rights just a little too equal. We need to make people a little less equal. I’m certainly not advocating that we just arbitrarily start taking back voting rights of large groups, although you could argue that Victorians don’t have the mental capacities to make rational judgements.

It will need to be done on a case by case basis which will certainly be time consuming and expensive but it should make our day to day lives more enjoyable.

Essentially we’d try to take away voting rights of stupid people. Let’s not quantify stupidity as having anything to do with education by the way. There are plenty of very well educated stupid people. Let me give an example of a person I presume is well educated but is stupid, and is trying to take advantage of how stupid most of us are. I am talking about the dietitian or nutritionist who has told all of the fast food restaurants that the average daily intake of energy is 8700 kilojoules which they now quote all over their menu

boards. Let’s think carefully about this one. I’m sure that the average daily intake is about 8700kj, but let’s not forget the average person is obese. Presumably we need to be taking in significantly less than this amount, or exercising a great deal more to actually be living a healthy lifestyle.

Sorry Mr, Mrs or Miss Nutritionist, you’ve had your voting rights withdrawn. If this was a little bit too tricky the alternative I see is that we have a democracy but we give the prime minister the right to do whatever he or she wants. They can make laws, overturn laws, put James Hird in jail or do whatever they want, with just one exception. They still have to be voted into the role by the people of Australia each three years.

I know what you’re thinking; surely this goes against the very principle of a democracy. Well like I said,

I don’t think democracy is working in its current state.

It’s worth giving my idea a go surely.

Watching Tony Abbott lately I suspect he has come to the same realisation. It started with him making all of the operations involving boat people arrivals a military operation and top secret. Now he’s trying to tell the ABC what they should and shouldn’t be saying. I say well done, Mr Prime Minister. It works pretty well in North Korea which is surely one of the most stable governments in the world. Even Dennis Rodman thinks so so that must mean something.

I’m not really sure if I’m being serious at this point. I’ve got a feeling I just lost my right to vote.

The multipurpose equipment, Funded by the Australian Governments Healthy Communities Initiative (HCI) - Get Active

Glenelg2Grampians Project, includes chin-up bars, step ups, sit up benches and body dip bars, which can all be used to improve muscle condition and supplement any cardiovascular exercise, including simply going for a walk. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr John Northcott said he was excited to see new equipment for two locations in Glenelg Shire.

“Thirty minutes of

physical activity daily is recommended to maintain your health and this equipment makes exercising free and easy for those who struggle to get motivated,” he said.

“The Portland site is at the BBQ area of Fawthrop Lagoon in Hood Street and the Merino site is at Lions Park on the PortlandCasterton Road.

“These are both popular areas for exercise anyway and the new equipment is added incentive to get

out in the fresh air and be healthy.” The equipment is being installed in Portland on Tuesday, February 25, and in Merino on February 26. Local chefs set to showcase local produce MEET THE CHEF - MARK WRIGHT Camping as a child, Mark Wright, and his family used to catch their dinner. They simply didn’t eat until the fish had been caught or the rabbit hunted down.

“It wasn’t something where we tried for half an hour and gave up and went and bought fish and chips,” Mark said.

And now as a chef, that hunter-gatherer mentality

remains, only now he strolls through the garden of Kathryn Davies daily to choose fresh ingredients to complement the Wagyu beef that is the hero of his dishes at Mayura Station’s Tasting Room. Mark is the face of The Tasting Room at Mayura Station, wher he is approaching his first anniversary. His childhood has prepared him well for a life in a kitchen where simplicity and innovation are viewed as the key to success. The fond memories of fishing and chipping oysters off rocks in the Kimberely region inadvertently are a constant reminder to Mark of the importance of fresh produce. “I remember how eating those fresh ingredients tasted,” he said. It was Mark’s dad that was the cook in the house and the earliest influence on Mark’s food experiences. “He was pretty innovative as far as home cooking goes,” Mark said. “We did have meat and three veg a

to catch up as a family and really savour and enjoy the meal.

As a teenager Mark didn’t really know what he wanted to do so prior to kickstarting his cheffing career, Mark did a stint at Balfours as a packer and bakery assistant. Looking back, it was a good foundation in terms of food safety and handling. “I got to see how food should be cared for and handled and it did set me up for my first job as a kitchen hand,” he said. “I think it’s good for everyone to start as a kitchen hand and then work their way up.”

Mark eventually completed a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery at the Northern Beaches Institute of TAFE although it was the surf not the lure of a cooking career that first took him to the New South Wales coast. Mark creates his dishes from seasonal produce so there could be no more perfect gig for him that The Tasting Room. “I heard about the

job through contacts in the industry and it sounded like just what I was looking for,” Mark said. He secured an interview and even had to cook a steak for Scott de Bruin. “I was quite nervous when he asked me to cook a steak – I certainly wasn’t expecting that,” Mark said.

“But I must have done it right because I got the job.”

While the Mayura Station Wagyu is the centrepiece of the menu, Mark Has free rein outside of that to create his own dishes.

“Now I get to showcase really good food cooked the way it should be,” he said. “And having to use arguably the best Wagyu in the world is hardly an imposition when putting a menu together – to be hands on with every dish that gets given to a customer is something I’m really looking forward to.”

“It’s a great event which promotes activity and gives our students an alternative to traditional sports such as football, netball and basketball.”

Mr Orrock said a great cross-section of students from years eight to 12 enter the event, with some also choosing to tackle the race as individuals.

“The Kingston Triathlon is something Bordertown really gets behind as a community – road cycling, swimming and running are quite big here,” he said.

He has teamed up with fellow “over sixties” William Hay and Bill Purton, and the trio are entering as a team called “Willpower” in the International Cycles Olympic Course (1.5km S, 40km C, 10km R). “We grizzle about the fitness of the 20 year olds, but we’re quite competitive in our minds, and no-one wants to be the weakest link,” Wilson said. “We looked at the Have A Go section, but said no way – what’s the biggest one? Put us down my family and friends have

been very encouraging – no-one said ‘why?’ which is quite exciting.” Wilson will complete the 40kilometre bike leg and has embraced his new training regime, rising at 5am daily to embark on a large loop around the town, before heading down to the Nora Creina turn-off and back.

“Usually my companions are kangaroos; I see the same ones every day and I enjoy that, and as long as the knees are working on the big day and there isn’t much wind about it will be awesome,” he said. The event, which will be based on the town’s foreshore, is also the seventh race of the Triathlon SA State Series - the SA Olympic Distance Championship.

All major SA clubs will be vying for the SA title, with strong interest also coming from Victoria.

BASKETBALL Lakers A sterling defensive effort, a stunning opening quarter and some individual brilliance from grand final MVP Simon Berkefeld has seen the Mount Gambier Lakers come from fourth to defend their CBL South West Conference title. It brought up a three-peat for the Lakers, who also played in the inaugural season decider - the only club to have played in all four CBL conference grand finals.

Taking on the Horsham Hornets on their home court, a stadium where they had lost just once during the CBL season, the Lakers did what all visiting teams must do - get off to a good start. They did just that, leading by eight points at the first change and never losing that lead. It was eight points at the main change and four at three

Horsham’s leading scorer Tim Pickert finished with a game high 22 points but his shooting percentage was low - he had to take a lot of shots to get his tally anywhere near his season average and it was boosted by some crazy shots that fell his way late when Horsham desperately looked to snare the lead. “You can’t coach against guys hitting crazy shots outside their usual repertoire,” coach Dallas Jeffree said. “He was the danger man and even though he finished with 22 I thought we did a good job on him.” Another key was the stopping job the Lakers did on the dangerous Cameron Bruce, the South West Conference

MVP, who ended up with only four points. “He looked dangerous early and like he was going to try and do it all himself so we made some adjustments and were able to stop him in his tracks,” Jeffree said. Matty Berkefeld and Matt Parslow had the defensive job on Bruce and on the rare occasions he broke through there was plenty of help defence from the likes of Joe FergusonLane. Tim Friend was the other Hornet that has been a consistent scorer and playmaker and he did not trouble the scorers.

Berkefeld top scored for the Lakers with 20 points, while the hard working FergusonLane, who was also critical defensively, finished with 13 points and Dellon Brown, who has been the Lakers most consistent go-to scorer

after Berkefeld was again important with 11 points.

“I thought we really made them scramble and they were never able to settle,” Jeffree said. “The key for us at the end when they were taking risks and rushing was not to rush ourselves.”

The Lakers will now head to Bendigo this weekend for the CBL finals, taking on the Gippsland Conference winners Churchill Devils and North East Conference champions Shepparton Gators for the State title.

The Lakers finished runnerup in that race last year to Warragul. “We have just come from nowhere to win three in a row when everyone had written us off as done and dusted,” Jeffree said. “So we’ll just see how things go again this weekend.”

STARS OF THE WEEK Plenty of rounds go by in local cricket without a century being scored and this week there were two. Shane Stevens (left), who we have almost come to expect big scores from, made 111 in leading West Gambier to a first innings victory over Kalangadoo. In the O’Donoghue Shield (under 16 competition) 15 year old Jack Capewell (right) went one better - scoring an unbeaten century in a competition where players have to retire at 40 and only occasionally earn a recall later in the innings. Jack made 109no in an an innings that included 13 boundaries and cleared the rope four times.

SOFTBALL Rescheduled After missing a round last week due to the extreme weather policy, teams were this week keen to get their matches in, with the rescheduling of all games away from the hottest parts of the day enabling the round to go ahead. At the early time slot of 10.30am, Concordes A took on Warriors U/17, in a match which Concordes came out on top in near 40 degree temperatures. Concordes responded in turn, taking advantage of a couple of errors to plate two runs of their own. The next hour saw a very tight tussle ensue, with batters struggling to make any real inroads against the tight pitching of Alanna Jones for Concordes and Georgia Hood for Warriors.

Leading five runs to two, it looked like Warriors were on their way to victory, but Concordes showed their resolve with a shackle

breaking fifth innings, getting on top of the Warriors field and scoring seven runs to snatch the lead and ultimately come away with the victory, 9 runs to 5. A highlight of the innings was a huge hit to Elysha Collins, with loaded bases, bouncing over the left field boundary fence. Best with the bat for Warriors was Yazmin King with two safe hits, and Amber Hood took a sensational catch against the fence from behind the plate. For Concordes, Sam Brown had two safe

hits, and Jones pitched with great accuracy to help Concordes record a well deserved win. The other A Grade clash of the round was played at the much cooler time slot of 4pm, with Warriors A taking on Demons A in what many believe will be a grand final preview. If so, Warriors showed why they are the current favourites, edging out Demons in a tight match four runs to nil. The story of the game was Georgia Hood, who completely dominated the Demons bats, recording a

stunning 13 strike outs over six innings. The Warriors field was not left with a lot to do, but did what was required with virtually no errors, allowing only a handful of base runners for the whole match. Cody Manning was the highlight for Demons, both recording their only safe hit of the game and also performing very well at shortstop in the field. Demons were also not able to dominate the Warriors bats as they have in the past, with eight safe hits being recorded against them, including three extra

base hits. The experience of Tanya Hood and Felicity Walker shone through as they both recorded two safe hits each, as did Talyssia Moretti who also hit a three bagger to score in the seconnd innnings.

Warriors scored in each innings bar one, and ran out deserved winners, 4-0.

league hosting State junior championships this weekend Not only is the Mount Gambier Softball League hosting this weekend’s South Australian State Junior Softball Championships, it is fielding two sides that will certainly be in the mix at the business end of the competition.

Matches start on Friday afternoon with the championships wrapping up on Sunday. Tanya

Hood is coaching the Under 17 team, which boasts the three State under 17 representatives - Amber Hood, Eleanor McClintock (Warriors) and Cody Manning (Demons).

The team also includes rising talents Georgia Hood and Jenna Burston, bit batting Yazmin King and Taylor Wilsmore, as well as Nikki Howard, Maddi Hann, Amanda Winkley and Chelsea Vanderhorst. Jenny Burston is the under 17 assistant coach and Karen Cawthorne is the

scorer. Felicity Walker is in charge of the Under 13 line-up, with Deb Breen as her assistant, Maggie Breen as the scorer and Annie Breen stepping in as manager. The team includes Imogen Walker, Dana Jones, Montana Millard, McKenzie Millard, Emily Dawe, Emmerson Hann, Casey Koplin, Jorja Humphries, Claire Day, Georgia Mustey, Caitlyn Millard and Keyarnah Smith. When available a full draw will be uploaded to the Lifestyle1 app and results will also be posted

as soon as practical after completion of each day’s play. All matches will be played at Blue Lake Sports Park.

takes out South Coast Raceway drags

The Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car show delighted thousands of fans at Fuchs South Coast Raceway and it was young New South Wales racer Daniel Schultz aboard Supa Charger who got the victories when it counted to take home top honours ahead of

series superstar Shane Olive driving LA Hooker.

The warm temperatures threw a curve ball for both the drivers and the crews but the teams not only put down some quick and fast passes but also demonstrated some amazing side-by-side

racing. The eventual event winner was decided on the very last race of the day, with the winner of the Gauci versus Olive match-up needing to have to recorded a better than 4.40-pass as well as the win to surpass Schultz.

Despite the tyre-smoking side-by-side ‘photo finish’ effort from both cars, Olive missed taking the top spot by a few hundredths of a second. “We are just excited and happy to be honest,” Daniel Schultz said. “I said I’d be home in time for breakfast Sunday after the event, I have a present for them when we get there – a winner’s trophy that’s bigger than I am.”

Still buzzing after his race

against Gauci, Olive said it was an amazing race.

“What a race that last one was,” he said. “Neither of us had any idea who had actually won, it was that close.”

The times were a 4.42 versus 4.43-seconds – so it was as close as it felt.

Queenslander Peter Leahy had a near flawless debut in the Superbad Nova, which saw him line up in the final round against brother Greg to take his position on the podium.

“What a awesome day,” Leahy said. “A huge thanks to my guys, it was our first event with the Superbad Nova and to come home with third place is totally awesome and we beat my brother in

the last race of the day.”

Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car series manager Steve Bettes said he didn’t think the racing could get much better than what we saw in Sydney. “I’m happy to say, I was wrong, once the guys got a handle on the tune-up, it was side by side passes and tyresmoking madness,” Bettes said. “To see the guys like the Russler, Supa Charger and Leahys put together this combination and then racing it so well makes me proud. I can’t wait for Mildura in April.”
