LOCAL Standing We’ve all sat and watched at least one episode of the spate of reality TV shows turning everyday Australians with dreams of careers in music, dance, cooking or modelling, into celebrities. But the “real” reality is, building a career takes hard work and sacrifice. Mount Gambier’s Tamara Seeley has chosen the latter, working hard at her craft for just over a decade and now she is looking to really kickstart her music career thanks to a crowd funding project launched on Friday.

“There’s a reason why when you’re young you’re singing into a hairbrush,” Tamara said. “There’s a reason why you have a dream and it’s never too

late to pursue it.” She wants to record and release a five track EP of original songs and she’s hoping the support of her home community and the hundreds of contacts she made working internationally in South Korea, Qatar and on a Disney cruise ship will help her realise her dream.

It’s a 40 day campaign using crowd funding – the latest trend in financing dreams – and if Tamara does not hit her target of $10,000 no money ever changes hands. Tamara is using the world’s largest crowd funding site – kickstarter.com

– and she’s certainly done her research, uploading a professional presentation to attract sponsors. She is offering packages of $5 to $1000 for potential supports, with signed copies of the EP, singing lessons and an acoustic show all on offer through her crowd funding site.

Put simply, if 400 people buy a $25 package, which inlcudes a signed copy of her EP, she will achieve her goal. Tamara currently works at the Mount Gambier Golf Club and Park Hotel doing bar work and the 31 year old is not ready to give up on her music dream. Chances are you’ve heard her sing - she plays in many of the local pubs and is often the headline act at functions at The Barn. “I love the connection you have with an audience, that’s what it’s all about for me,” she said. It’s been all about singing covers for the first 11 years of her career but Tamara has always wanted to eventually focus on her own work. “There have been times where you do want to give up,” Tamara said. “You think should I get a 9-5 job but it’s still there when you wake up and that’s what I want to do and anything else doesn’t come close to that.” She took the first serious step

in her career in 2012 when she released a YouTube video of her single Release Me and the response has been phenomenal but creating videos and

recording songs doesn’t come cheap and Tamara is hopeful there’s enough people out there who not just appreciate her music but believe

LOCAL Another One of Australia’s largest and longest running rose nurseries will again be throwing open its gates for a rare chance to see it at one of its most colourful times of year. Following its highly successful Open Day nearly 18 months ago, when more than 400 people came through the gates, Wagners’ Rose Nursery is pleased to be offering visitors and locals the chance to see the nursery as part of a family friendly day this month.

The Wagner’s Rose Nursery Open Day – held as a McKay Children’s Centre fundraising event – will provide visitors with the chance to learn more about large scale rose production with owner Brian Wagner. The wholesale nursery - now offering online retail sales will offer magnificent views of more than 600 varieties of roses in bloom, with March being a perfect time to see them at their best.

It will be a unique chance to see both the new 2014 rose releases, and the standards in flower, while also viewing a large selection of yearling and two year old roses.

Wagner’s Rose Nursery is located on a 50 hectare property near Kalangadoo and is the agent for the main rose breeders in the world. The nursery grows more than 600 varieties for the wholesale market, has recently entered the online retail market, and distributes a monthly enewsletter to their growing customer base. It has built a strong reputation over the past 50 years as one of Australia’s leading rose suppliers to Garden Nurseries. The Rose Nursery Open Day has been designed to be family friendly and will feature a selection of food options including Mount Gambier’s Gala Mustafa’s delicious Middle Eastern food, along with baked goods and drinks. A

selection of potted plants and bunches of roses will also be for sale. There will be entertainment for young children to keep them busy while their parents enjoy the roses.

All proceeds from the day will be going toward McKay Children’s Centre in Penola, to improve the indoor area of the Centre and to support other important projects.

“We often get calls from people requesting a tour of our Garden Nursery so we are thrilled to be offering the chance for people to come along and see how we operate”, said Brian Wagner. Visitors will have the opportunity to join Brian on a ‘continual tour’ - when all their questions and queries

about rose growing will be answered.

The Rose Nursery Open Day will be held on Sunday March 30, from 10am to 4pm, with an entry of $8 per adult and children under 15 free. Visitors are recommended to wear enclosed footwear. The Margaret Cleves dancers excelled, with students winning numerous medals and titles, as well as Georgia Quick winning runner up in the 16 years

It was originally a service and repairs business with two employees and boasted a showroom and a workshop. Five years into the venture, not only was Peter already diversifying and expanding just what PJ Pumps offered, he was also looking for a new

Schrapel as an automotive electrician and pump technician. He worked hard, learnt as much as he could and after a decade decided it was time to stand on his own two feet and start his own business. And so on

That’s also when the drilling and irrigation side of the business was developed as Peter realised to not just survive but thrive, you couldn’t be a niche business, you had to be a one stop shop. “We started off as service based, then started

growing with product and then got into the good companies and they grew with us,” Peter said. “We had to keep diversifying because the economy changed and you couldn’t just do one thing, you had to diversify – that’s what keeps the wheels turning – you can’t do just pumps or just irrigation, you have to tie everything in together to make the business work.” Peter now has five

staff, including son, Kym, who has progressed from apprentice to technician to management in his 21 years in the family business. Like his father, Kym left school at 15 to take on an apprenticeship, it was an electrical apprenticeship. He did have 12 months out of the business as many young people do, spreading their wings beyond Mount Gambier, but he soon

came back, settling down with wife Justine and having a family. “Even before he started as an apprentice, he was working here,” Peter said. “He was sweeping the floors and all that, he loved following me around.” And while she’s never been part of the family business, daughter Donna, has returned home to Mount Gambier, also to raise her young family.

She chose a career in the

travel industry, incidentally following in the footsteps of her mother Bernie, who was also a travel consultant after stepping away from the family business. Donna lived and worked in Queensland before returning and taking up a new position at the courthouse. For Peter, many of his clients have become akin to family as well. “We have a wonderful, loyal client base, I have made a lot of good friends through the business and through the companies we deal with,” Peter said. “Customer service has always been our number one focus and that’s why people keep coming back – you can sell a good product but you just have to have the best possible service to back that up.” He also said you can never underestimate the value of good staff.

“That’s what keeps your business going,” Peter said.

Warriors has been the stand out club in the Mount Gambier Softball League and this weekend they showed domination like never before.

The club won all three grand finals on offer – A, B & C grade titles – and all with mercy rule victories. A grade coach Tanya Hood led her team to the club’s 31st A grade premiership – the 15th one she has coached.

But this one was oh, so different. This was about a changing of the guard with Hood and fellow veteran premiership team mate Felicity Walker taking on the short stop and second base

roles respectively, while the next generation developed their own pitching-catching combination. Teenager Eleanor McClintock took to the mound, as she had for most of the season, and pitched the entire game, conceding only seven safehits and, earning herself the MVP honour, an accolade also helped by her three safehits.

Hood’s daughter Amber was catcher as a new combination for the future of the club was groomed – the duo also played State softball together this season at Under 17 level.

And it’s a scary prospect for opposition clubs with Yazmin King (1st base) and Nikki Howard (centrefield) also just teenagers and Georgia Hood, who played the grand final at right field, a pitcher on the rise who has clearly inherited her mother’s abilities. Warriors scored two runs their first

Warriors then responded with two more runs, with Demons refusing to go away and making it 5-3 before Warriors went on a batting rampage, bringing in five more runs and ending any challenge from the bayside combination.

Federal Baseball Club has broken an 11 year premiership drought, winning the best of three division one grand final series in the Mount Gambier & District Baseball League at the weekend. Not since 2002/03 had the proud club even looked like snaring a title and for many of that ensuing 11 years, were the easybeats of the competition and the team that missed out on play-offs.

But the rise has been rapid and sweet for the club, which was the club that advanced straight into the title decider. Federal took game one on Friday night 4-2 and despite trailing 1-3 in the second match on Saturday afternoon, did manage to secure loaded bases at the bottom of the ninth and threatened to make a cleansweep of the series. Tigers’ pitcher Mitchell Thomson had only given up four hits for the game in his first time on the mound in the final series, but he did visibly tire and a couple of walks saw Federal in a threatening position. Brodie Foster strode to the mound and was able to finish the job as two miscued fly balls were snaffled by the Tigers field and the reigning champions pushed the series into the decider. But Federal had come too far to let this golden opportunity at a premiership flag slip away and they repeated the Friday night scoreline to secure the title. The Janette Burner Memorial Award for player of the series was share by Cameron Smith (Federal) and Joe Atkin (Tigers). And while for many of the Federal players who have been part of some of those struggling sides, the victory was living the dream, arguably the player on the day that really lived the dream was Under 13 Gold Central Magpies player Tom Winkley who hit a grand slam home run in his team’s 13-3 win over Millicent. Central won five of the available titles on the weekend with federal claiming the other two. In the Under 17 and Under 13 Blue divisions, it was a three peat for the Central club, while in division three it was Central’s fifth title in six seasons.

South Gambier has claimed its sixth consecutive Barber Shield title with a 27 run victory over previously undefeated West Gambier at Marist Park. On the back of a 79 run sixth wicket stand between opener and man of the match Alex Hentschke (77) and reliable middle order veteran Michael Sims (73) on day one and a six wicket haul from skipper David Somerfield the Maroons again proved they are so hard to beat. Somerfield bowled a mammoth 28.1 overs, which was Herculean given he dislocated his shoulder a month ago in the T20 decider. But he was bowler that looked the most likely all day and aside from his second to last over where some lusty hitting form Shane Dycer resulted in 10 runs coming from the over, he was also the hardest bowler to score from. As expected, Shane Stevens (84); Jason McCrae (35) and Pete Hawthorne (23) were the mainstays of the innings.

Both sides showed good discipline on what was a flat track – South keeping things tight with the ball with good stump to stump bowling and West being more patient than ever before and knowing if they could bat the time, the runs would come. And they looked to be about on pace, particularly during the57 run partnership between McCrae and Stevens and really only looked shaky when Stevens was finally dismissed with the score at 8/179. That left the Roos 11 overs to score 50 runs and while the late hitting from Dycer and Derek Sargeant provided entertainment for spectators, some nervous moments for the South fielders and a glimmer of hope for their team mates in the end Dycer holed out to Matty O’Neil who did well to take the miscued lofted driver, looking into the sun and with an age to think about the significance of the catch. “My heart was in my mouth,” O’Neil said. “It was really hard to see it coming.”

Somerfield was full of praise for his team, which had recovered from 4/27 on day one to post the competitive total and then aside from a patch of short and wide bowling, made scoring tough for the supremely talented West line-up. “It’s one of the tightest ones we’ve had,” Somerfield said. “To West’s credit I thought they batted well but at the end of the day

we just seem to find a way.”

And the skipper believes it’s the depth of his side that is so critical. “Every week, if a couple of blokes are down on form, there’s another couple who stand up and get the job done and that’s what happened in this game as well,” Somerfield said.

Vanquished skipper Bray Stephenson was hopeful getting so close would prove motivating for 2014/15.

“Hopefully we come back stronger next year and go all the way,” Stephenson said.

He scored his maiden century on day one of the final – his unbeaten 111 in fact the first time he has even passed 50.

He did do the most damage with the ball, as well, taking 3/7. East finished with an impressive total of 239 and Kongorong was dismissed for 41.

Uniting Church has come from the clouds to win the 2013/14 Mount Gambier & District Tennis Association A1 tennis title – its first flag in 15 seasons.

Interestingly, four of the 2013/14 premiership combination were part of that 1989/99 title – Alison Telford, Denis Mathews, Julie Oldfield and Karen Mitchell. Uniting had a charmed run through the end of the season and the finals as things really started to click for the new look combination with West captain Michael Jolley said he had secretly hoped the in form Uniting team would bow out at the preliminary final stage. Talented young brothers Stephen and David Tomkins, Ian Hopes, Casey Walker and Vanessa Maxwell joined the four veterans from the club’s last premiership to form the winning Uniting team. West Gambier had been the benchmark for much of the 2013/14 season and had won straight through to the title decider but it was a case of so close yet so far. As expected, the Uniting men got the better of the West men, winning all four sets, while the West women did what they have done all season and dominated

their opponents. The only exception was the four ladies singles which saw West’s Alice Suva taking on Telford.

It was a seesawing contest with little separating the two girls but at 6-6, Telford’s experience came to the fore and she claimed a rare victory against a female West opponent 9-6. It proved to be the clincher, with the doubles split two apiece.

Popular author Wendy Altschwager returns to Millicent to launch her eagerly awaited new novel The Pledge on Tuesday, April 1, at 7pm at the Millicent Public Library. Wendy, a renowned author of Australiana and the author of three best sellers has successfully selfpublished and is a keenly sought after speaker on the author circuit.

Mayor Peter Gandolfi congratulates Wendy on the launch of her new novel which is set in and around Millicent and District, where Wendy and her husband John grew up.

The Pledge is inspired by many stories, reminiscences and an intergenerational story wrapped around the area and includes such icons as the ‘flying fox’ at Eudundas and the iconic Fosters Foodland. Wendy has a deep love for her family, horses and life on the land. While on a lifestyle change, caravanning and working in Western Australia, she kept journals recording their experiences, which later became her inspiration to write.

Wendy invented a story set in the Western District of Victoria, and although her novels are fictitious

they are based on real life situations.

Wendy’s books include Runaway: A young man’s search for himself and Edwina Downs, which is the sequel to Runaway. Prior Knowledge, launched at the Millicent Library in 2012 features Werribee, Flemington and that famous day in November.

The Pledge promises to be another bestseller and libraries manager Janice Nitschke said that this author visit and book launch follows on from the very successful author visits of Michael Robotham and master chef Callum Hann. These visits importantly enabled the community to meet with, listen to and be inspired by authors of note at the library which is truly a community hub. This year the library celebrates 50 years of public library service to the community and has a robust program of author events and community programs to celebrate this milestone.
