steels himself for the challenge ahead

He is yet to be in the bottom three and face dancing for his life but the pressure is on Mount Gambier’s Sam Malseed as the competition heats up on So You Think You Can Dance Australia. After early standing ovations and bringing host Carrie

Bickmore to tears in the early rounds of the live shows, the past couple of weeks have seen some stinging criticism come the way of the popular contestant and while it’s been tough to hear, Sam’s reaction on Thursday night was typical of the hard

working dancer. “It feels like I’ve got a challenge, I have to step up my game now and take it to the next level,” Sam said.

“You look at times like a little boy lost,” judge Jason Gilkison said after Sam’s live performance on Thursday night’s show, as Paula Abdul and Shannon Holtzapffel, also expressed concerns about Sam’s past fortnight. But with a new dance partner for this week’s live show and the challenge to regain the support he enjoyed from the judges during the auditions and early live shows, Sam is ready to step it up big time and continue his So You Think journey.

“I don’t see it as competing with anyone else but myself,” Sam said, after Thursday night’s show. “I’m just trying as hard as I can to do the best in every routine.” Sam said he has definitely now challenged himself to improve so he can continue the journey.

“I am still loving it, it’s crazy and I can’t believe I’ve got this far,” Sam said. “I am learning so much from every choreographer, dancing the different genres and I’m around such amazing

people all the time.”

Sam said the entire group was close and enjoying the opportunity to learn from each other. “”We really are supportive of each other and want each other to do amazingly well,” Sam said.

After splitting with original partner Zoey for last week’s show and teaming up with Stephen, who was eventually eliminated, Sam said he knew the change up was coming and would be tough. “I knew I couldn’t dance with Zoey for the entire competition but I didn’t expect to be paired with another guy,” he said.

“It was definitely awkward at times but you just have to get over that, being in this industry is about doing what is required of you, adapting and making sure you can cope in any situation and dancing any genre and that’s what the show is teaching me.

This month, the Youth Advisory Group of Mount Gambier and the Mount Gambier Public Library have come together and planned a great week full

of fun activities, live music and the chance to win some awesome prizes! Join the fun at the Public Library from April 5-13, available for youth from 12 to 25 years of age. The

theme for this program is ‘Our Voice, Our Impact’.

Voice meaning ‘the right to be heard’ and impact meaning ‘having an effect on someone’. Mount

Gambier Public Library Technician, Terasa Nearmy said they want the voices of young people from around the community to be heard, and were willing to provide opportunities that are fun to help them realise that their opinions are important to the community. Youth Week launches on April 5, starting with an exciting scavenger hunt, allowing you to form a group of friends and go on a search, all dressed up, and have a chance to win great prizes. Launch and Loc8: AKA Scavenger Hunt starts at 11am to 12noon and will include live music and free food. Several other activities will be open including a Graphic Art Workshop, Snap Shot Photography Workshop, Video games and screening new release movies. This program is a great way for the youth to experience new things, along with the company of other kids their age. Miss Nearmy said the youth that participate would not just be having a great time, but finding new abilities they might not be so strong in, like motivation, and confidence, and they discover that they enjoy the things they weren’t very comfortable with and didn’t think they would enjoy.

“The aims of our program are for the youth to be entertained, and at the same time, are made aware of the

opportunities that are out there for them and who they can contact for support,” she said. Another great event happening within this week is LOUD in the Library, which has been

running for the third year in a row, and the results have been very encouraging.

It will revisit the Public Library on Thursday, April 10, from 6:30-8:30pm.

On this night the youth

will be entertained with live music performances from Reminiscence, Babycat, Streamlyne and more.

There will also be dance performances from the Hype Dance Studio and Forever Living Young (pictured).

Activities will also be taking place like a Snapparazzi Photobooth, Online Gaming, a Silent Disco and loads more, including a Mario Cart Challenge. “Every one of these activities is free for all youth between the ages of 12-25 and it is a great opportunity for them to have a good time, with their friends, in a safe environment,” Miss Nearmy said. The staff from the Public Library consulted with the Youth Advisory Group, and talked with youth themselves about what kind of activities they would like to participate in. They talked about how they could get a positive and enthusiastic response from the youth and discussed how they would achieve this. “We encourage all people from 12-25 to participate in these activities, learn new things and have an awesome week,” Miss Nearmy said. Cautiously optimistic – that’s the general feel around the region’s real estate industry and retail sector in general.

It seems that slowly but surely, confidence is returning, people are starting to spend and a resurgence in the timber industry is fuelling an economic recovery that will be slow and spasmodic but will come. “Things have improved in our industry for the last 12 months,” Paul Chuck, from Gebhardts Real Estate, said. “There’s good buyer confidence, I think the whole community’s got more confidence and that makes a big difference with buying and selling.” That building confidence and lower interest rates seems to have kickstarted an industry that had been struggling for the best part of five or six years. “There’s a mixture of first home buyers and investors and properties up to $300,000 are highly sought after,” Mr Chuck said.

He said conversations with the local building sector also reflected a lift in confidence. “For so long builders were quoting jobs but blocks were staying vacant but now they are quoting jobs and actually getting the work and people are building,” Mr Chuck said. Elders Mount Gambier sales manager Graeme Cleves agrees the industry is on the rise.

“Sales wise and listings wise things are definitely better,” Mr Cleves said. “We have sold double the properties for the same time last year.” He said the affordable nature of property prices in the region was attracting out of town buyers – both investors and people looking to relocate for a tree change. It seems a change in vendor expectations has also helped regenerate the local real estate market.

“We’re not going to see the high prices of a decade ago any time soon but if vendors are willing to list their property at the right price they will sell, and quickly,” Mr Cleves said. Malseed Real Estate’s Jason Malseed agreed the market was moving in the right direction. “We are seeing more vendors being realistic about what they can get and that there are buyers around if you are prepared to negotiate,” Mr Malseed said. LJ Hooker manager John Overmatt said there was a definite shift in general confidence in Mount Gambier but that the mood was still tinged with caution. “You talk to people down the street and you talk to the people at opens and they are positive,” Mr Overmatt said. “But they do still have concerns about the future and employment stability and things like that but there is definitely a sense that things are getting better.” Mr Overmatt said much of the improved mood in the street had to do with the well publicised burgeoning

timber industry that is attracting investment, creating employment and clearly once again the king of local industries in the region. He also said the renewed confidence was still quite cyclical and spasmodic.

“You are really busy for a few weeks and then it drops off and then it picks up again,” Mr Overmatt said. Vicki Quinn, of Vicki Quinn Real Estate, also feels 2014 looks like being a good year. “It has been a good start to the year,” Mrs Quinn said. “It’s a really good time for first home buyers to get out there and see what’s on the market and investors are certainly out and about as well – there’s a good vibe in the town and people do seem to be feeling more positive.” Blue Lake Real Estate’s Kathryn WeddellLucas, who started her own business at a tough time for the industry, said there was no doubt the industry was seeing an upturn. “We’ve just sold four properties in Millicent and also properties in Mt Burr, Tarpeena and Nangwarry and they were places where things just weren’t selling before,” she said. “It is good to be operating in a one in, one out situation where every time we sell something we are also getting another listing.” P & L’s Al Lamond said the confidence levels had been building since late last year and in the up to $300,000 price bracket, there was plenty of buyer interest. “You can see it just from numbers at open inspections compared with a few months ago and it’s genuinely interested buyers,” he said. Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce president Lynette Martin said she believed the housing industry was showing some improvement and that the economy was slowly picking up. “2013 was a really difficult economic climate but retailers did have a pretty good Christmas,” she said. “It has been a little sluggish since but having said that, the good news around the timber industry and the more positive outlook in real estate will eventually flow through.” The chamber president said people’s spending habits had changed but they were still splurging for special occasions but being more prudent with every day discretionary spending.

for Polly Waffles about a fortnight ago when it popped into my head for no good reason. I was unaware at this stage that they had ceased manufacturing that chocolatey, wafery, marshmallowy goodness.

Many of you are probably wondering why I wouldn’t know that they were no longer available if I was such a big fan. I don’t know what to say. I thought that maybe they were only being sold at some sort of exclusive confectionery shop that I have not been invited to attend. They sell Polly Waffles, Big Boss, and those racing car lollies.

Does anyone know where I can find some Big Boss; you know those cigar/dynamite things that are sort of like Fags/Fads except bigger and brown?

In my defense, Donna doesn’t allow me to go shopping very often. For some reason she doesn’t like me to purchase food

that I would actually enjoy eating. It’s part of some bizarre flavour embargo she is trying to enforce on me. I think she was running out of ways to suck the enjoyment out of my life or something.

The fact is, I wasn’t aware of what had happened to Polly Waffles until I did some research ie. I looked it up on Wikipedia.

Apparently sales had been down so they had a go at changing the recipe (why oh why mess with such perfection?!) and the wrapper but when sales were still down they pulled the pin. It’s funny how the Federal Labor party have been so keen to point the finger at the Liberal government for not bailing out the local car manufacturing industry, but I don’t recall them making an effort to ensure I could still buy a Polly Waffle.

As I write this the South Australian State election is still in the balance with independents and minor parties strong possibilities to decide the eventual government. I think the Independents should give both sides the mission to get the Polly Waffle back and throw their support behind whoever manages to achieve it. Why do I care so much about Polly

Waffles? Apart from their deliciosity they simply had such great comedy value.

Picture a simpler time where people didn’t rely on digital media to provide all of their entertainment and enjoyment. Back in those days the fact a Polly Waffle looked like poo could provide hours of entertainment. Drop it in your local pool; leave it in the middle of the sidewalk down the main street; put it in a friend’s bed. The possibilities were endless and good times were guaranteed. I’m sure the young people would refer to this as a first world problem but I don’t appreciate them undermining the importance of this issue.

The only people who would suggest this isn’t life or death are young people who have been brought up thinking a Time Out is tasty and a subject for clever puns. “I had a Time Out today, Mum.” Stupid young people. Likewise Boost bars are overrated despite the fact they are poo-like in appearance. It’s fair to say that this is your first true test, Troy Bell. Get Tony Pasin involved too. boss’s shoes and takes a leading role in shaping the future of Giannis & The Body Retreat. “I just always wanted to be a hairdresser,” Brooke said. “And ever since getting the first part time job here when I was 15 I have loved it.” Her talent was apparent early and Katina had no hesitation in offering the enthusiastic young wannabe- stylist an apprenticeship. Brooke was 16 when she started her official apprenticeship and she has worked side by side with Katina ever since.

“Every apprentice was matched up with a senior stylist when we started and I was lucky enough to work with Katina,” Brooke said. “I’ve been so lucky to learn from the best and I am determined to make sure the same high standard the salon has set will continue.” To take on the lead role in the salon, not just in terms of leading the hair styling team but to facilitate training and development and ensuring the entire Giannis & The Body Retreat experience is delivered to a high standard now rests on Brooke’s diminutive shoulders but she is up for the challenge.

to that finishing touch of make-up before they leave, it is all important,” Brooke said. “It’s doing all the little things and making sure every client feels special.”

And it’s about providing a high standard of service and Brooke is committed to continuing the training and professional development programs she has enjoyed under Katina. “I was given so much training and so many great opportunities and I want to make sure I continue that training with the staff we have now so that we can provide the best service possible,” Brooke said. She has also secured some amazing industry opportunites, thanks to her talent and skill, as well as the strong networks Giannis has built with industry leaders since opening its doors 15 years ago.

Brooke has worked with Sharon Blain – a doyen of the industry who has been inducted into the hair Expo Australia’s Hall of Fame and won Hair Expo Educator of the Year on three consecutive occasions. She has worked with and trained Hollywood celebrity stylists, leading European creative teams and developed a wide range of educational resources and is considered a market leader in hair styling and hair styling education. Brooke worked

on a high fashion runway show with Blain – earning a coveted assistant’s role with the highly respected industry leader. “It was such a fantastic opportunity to work with Sharon and to work on such a high profile event,” Brooke said. “You just learn so much and it is an opportunity I’ve been able to have because Katina worked so hard to be recognised in the industry and now we have had the same opportunities she has had to work with some of the best in the business.”

Brooke has also worked with Clive Allwright – a UK hair stylist, who, like Blain, is also at the forefront of education in the industry, as well as boasting a work portfolio full of celebrity clients and major fashion and red carpet events. “I

helped Clive (Allwright) prepare models for Sydney Hair Expo for the runway show and it was amazing,” Brooke said. Specialising in bridal and special occasion hair styling, Brooke has well and truly earned the mantle of Giannis & The Body Retreat’s premier stylist after working in the leading Mount Gambier salon for seven years. She has added her own flair and style to the grounding she received from working with Katina and she is now keen to continue to build the reputation Giannis & The Body Retreat has established in the community by only raising the bar.

The South East Art Society has had several enquiries regarding drawing or art classes for children so will run a pilot class during the school holidays if there is sufficient interest. Classes are planned for Tuesday, April 15, and Tuesday, April 22, from 10am to 12noon for children aged 8-12 at the Old Stables at the corner of Herbert Street and Sutton Avenue, Mount Gambier. Cost will be $20 to attend both classes. Parents who wish to enrol their children need to contact Dave on (08)8725 0038 as soon as possible as places are limited. Participants need to bring their sketch book, HB and 6B pencil and eraser, and are advised to wear old clothes or smock.

Some extra materials such as charcoal, pastel, or paint will be provided if needed. These classes will concentrate on drawing and will be facilitated by Dave Staniforth assisted by talented artists Julianne Woodruff and Nita Von Stanke. If there is enough interest the society may provide further classes to help progress students next school holidays.

The current adult painting classes being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays 7pm to 9pm at the Stables are due to end on April 10.

If people are interested in further classes next school term they need to register their interest with Dave on (08)8725 0038 or Yvonne on 0407 776 164 as classes will only be held if the minimum number of 10 students enrol. Art Society members will be having an exhibition at the Port MacDonnell library from May 3 to June 28 with the theme “Over the Fence”. The last one for the year will be in November which was to have had the “Over the Fence” theme is now themed “Remembrance” as this year is 100 years since the beginning of WW1.

• There is a significant increased risk of developing glaucoma if you have a family history of glaucoma, diabetes, migraine, short sightedness (myopia), eye injuries, blood pressure or past or present use of cortisone drugs (steroids).

• If you have a family

member who has glaucoma, you have about a four times greater likelihood of developing the disease.

Installation of two synthetic turf tennis court surfaces this week will bring about the final stages of Glenelg Shire’s impressive $300,000 Tyrendarra Netball Tennis Court upgrade.

The development has included the construction of two compliant asphalt netball courts, two synthetic turf tennis courts and fittings, improved lighting and fencing. This project has been jointly funded by the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure (DTPLI), Glenelg Shire Council and Tyrendarra Sporting Clubs after Glenelg Shire Council was successful in applying for a DTPLI Country Football Netball Grant for the upgrade in early 2013. Fencing and lighting for the four courts as well as line-marking of the netball courts will also be started by early next week. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr John Northcott said work at the site was due to be completed in time for the netball season.

“Construction started in February and has remained on schedule, with the asphalt surface being laid recently,” he said. “The site will be handed back to the Tyrendarra sporting clubs once works have been completed and the courts commissioned prior to the first netball home game scheduled for April 12.“This will provide the Tyrendarra community with an exceptional facility when completed.” Weekly updates are being posted at the clubrooms at the Tyrendarra Recreation Reserve to keep members and the general community up to date with the projects progress.

Premier Dr Dennis Napthine, will perform the official opening on Saturday, May 10, during a home game between Tyrendarra and Heathmere.

local story With the increase of visitors travelling with self-contained motorhomes and caravans, the Wattle Range Council is considering designating camping areas for these vehicles. Mayor Peter Gandolfi said Council is seeking public comment on the designation of limited short term vehicle only camping areas in various locations across the council area. Mr Gandolfi said more and more people are travelling with self-contained vehicles and currently there are no designated areas where they can camp.

“Visitors are currently stopping throughout Wattle Range during their stay and council is well aware that some are camping at inappropriate areas including town parklands,” said Mr Gandolfi. “As a result, Council is aiming to limit the camping to appropriate locations and regulating these stays through its bylaws.”

He said refusing free camping altogether would simply result in travellers moving to neighbouring council areas resulting in lost income to the retail and service sector in Wattle Range. “Some owners of self-contained motorhomes and caravans choose not to stay in caravan parks,” Mr Gandolfi said. “To cater to these people Council established a bylaw allowing short-term stays and is now in the process of identifying suitable areas where this free camping can occur.

These locations will be only for self-contained motorhomes and caravans and will not allow the erection of tents.” Council is seeking feedback from members of the public, including caravan park owners and others in the business community, on the locations being considered for recreational vehicle free camping. Maps showing these sites and further information on Council’s Recreational Vehicle Camping Areas can be found on council’s website and written submissions should be sent to the Wattle Range Council by 5pm, Wednesday, April 30.
