Season and bring to a simmer. Cover pan and bake in the oven for 1 1/2 hours or until lamb is tender, then remove from the oven. Bring to a simmer and cook over medium heat for 3-4 minutes until sauce thickens. Spread mustard on baguette slices and layer on top of lamb mixture. Sprinkle with cheese and bake for 20 minutes until bubbling. Sprinkle with parsley, to serve.

pretty sure that it spells the end of our civilisation. How can we go on living if we’re presented with this rubbish as some sort of reality? A

definition of reality will say something like, “the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of

them.” With that definition in mind, let’s now consider the reality television on our screens. The reality television show that Channel 9 are advertising on average every two and a half minutes, When Love Comes to Town has me particularly interested. Remember reality is the state of things as they actually exist. Scoot down to the local bus depot and see what steps off the bus. I’ve done a study over the last week and found the following. Twenty seven pensioners, fourteen kiddies coming to visit their granny, and a guy who kept on saying, “where’s the mountain? I’ve got to make a sacrifice to the fiery God Chawanga.” There were no hot chicks looking for a husband. How about the super popular “The Voice”.

where unknown singers wander in out of nowhere, sing a song and two minutes later Will.I.am says he has a beat that he wants to show you, Kylie Minogue flutters her eyelashes and flirts with you, whichever Madden twin that is says you rock, and Ricky Martin says something sexy in Spanish before telling you how much he loves your voice. Kids, this is not reality. This is an idealistic notion of reality.

It’s what lots of people would like the world to be like. But sorry everyone, it’s not reality. It’s make believe fairy land. Let’s even think of people who have found fame on these kind of shows. I can only remember Guy Sebastian who I’ll concede has had some sort of a career, and Shannon Noll, you know, the guy who sings the

In it for the long haul Liana Ruggiero might have been born in Adelaide but Mount Gambier is definitely home for the long serving chiropractor.

She has worked in the Blue Lake city for the past 25 years, running her own practice for 20 of those and she is definitely in it for the long haul. She moved here for an initial 18 month contract. That was extended twice and by then she was hooked and wanted to build her life here and bring up her family here. She has

clients on her books that she has been seeing for the past two decades and now she is seeing their children as well and she loves the crossgenerational aspect of her work here. “I do feel like part of the fabric of Mount Gambier,” Liana said. “And I look forward to serving the community for many years to come.” Liana has a focus on families in her wide ranging practice, with a particular interest in pregnant women and children. “I use a low force

technique that is safe and I base my practice around wellness for families,” Liana said. She completed her studies at Melbourne’s RMIT and then moved to Mount Gambier for her first job in 1989 at the Mount Gambier Chiropractic Centre. At the start of December 1993 she embarked on her own practice and in January 1995 set up her current premises on the corner of Commercial Street West and Sutton Avenue. It was Liana’s

own positive experience with chiropractic that led her down this career path in the first place. “It was in Year 12 that I had some chiropractic care which cleared my headaches and it just got me thinking about chiropractic as a career,” she said. And her passion for working with children has always been the foundation of her own practice. “I love working with children because you know you are helping them reach their potential, helping them to grow up

to be the best they can be,” she said. Nothing occurs in the body without, being perceived by the brain and the correct responses then being initiated. These messages travel to and from the brain via the spinal cord which is housed in the spine. Any misalignments in the spinal segments may create a change in function. Chiropractic is about identifying the misalignments to allow the nervous system and thus the body to function the

best it can. Liana has also enjoyed how regionally you tend to build a genuine rapport with long standing clients. “There are clients who have been with me since I basically moved here and it is great to now be helping some of them get the best out of their retirement,” she said. “I have enjoyed the wonderful support of many associate chiropractors in my practice in the 20 years and at present Dr Catherine Livingston has been in the Mount

Gambier community and my practice for a year and is looking to stay longer, it is great to be able to share this great community with other chiropractors.”

All this fired Charles up to help others in similar situations, so he set himself up as a masseur in Ballarat, after serving a traineeship with his father, which lasted several years and studying overseas and interstate and obtaining diplomas in Remedial massage, Chinese massage, Shiatsu and sports massage.

Sixteen years later, after working exhausting hours seeing near 100 clients per week, Charles decided on a change in pace and lifestyle so he set up a clinic for 15 years on the Gold Coast.

Once one of the fittest men in Adelaide, Charles Furner has had to overcome some of the most grievous physical setbacks possible.

However he has shrugged them aside and now wants to help others back on the road to health and fitness. “The main thing to remember is never to give up,” said Charles, who at age nine contracted polio and was incapacitated for three years, crippled in his back and legs. “I had to fight to recover, but Dad was a trained professional masseur and his constant massage and exercise programs enabled me to affect a full recovery.”

Charles had been introduced to running by his father when he was nine and after his bout of polio resumed running again when he was 12 years old, winning races with the Adelaide Harriers Club. At 18 years of age, Charles was still running until a fusion of the lower spine hospitalised him again for several months. But once again a strenuous program of exercise and regular massage enabled him to recover. By the time he was 27 years old, Charles had given running away and took up bicycle racing

The McDonnell family could be likened to a phoenix – twice they have risen from the ashes to turn tragedy into triumph. It’s taken vision and courage, but most of all it’s taken a whole lot of hard work. To last more than 60 years in any business can be a feat in itself, but to survive and thrive through the boom and bust cycles of the sometimes volatile timber industry is outstanding. The vision of company founder Newman McDonnell and the determination of the generations of his family to follow were honoured at the 2012 Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards with induction into the Hall of Fame.

Brothers Ian and Anthony McDonnell accepted the accolade on the night – they are now the company directors, along with Ian’s son Shaun, and are determined to preserve their legacy. All of them have tried other careers but the lure of the sawdust and the pride they all have in the family

name and what it has come to mean in this region and beyond has seen them all return to the Suttontown Road operation in Mount Gambier.

Ian, who was the first to join the company almost 40 years ago, remembers a childhood spent in the mill. “I used to come here as a kid and ride around in the forklift and in the trucks with dad,” he said. But when you are a teenager you’re not always 100 percent sure what you want to do and while he knew the option of joining the business would always be there, Ian headed to the Fort Largs Police Academy in Adelaide and trained to be a police officer.

That was in 1972 and two years later he was back in Mount Gambier and taking his first steps as an official member of the N.F.McDonnell & Sons team. “You had to learn from the ground

up – everyone did,” Ian said. “My first job was in transport but we worked in every part of the business – you did whatever needed to be done.” Looking back, Ian realises he was always going to end up at the mill.

“When you are a small child and you’re immersed in it with your parents you don’t know much different – that’s the thing with a family business,” he said. “I’ve grown into the business and I can’t recall not wanting to work in it.”

Anthony joined the business in 1993 after 14 years as a butcher. The opportunity to join the family business had arisen quite a few times and he admits he didn’t want to miss his chance so finally made the move. Anthony’s arrival at the mill was a nice piece of historical synergy as the brothers and their father Les worked side by side – just as Les and his brother Don had with their father Newman back in 1946 when the company was officially

founded.

And seeing how the original three McDonnell men rode out the highs and lows of the industry has been a good lesson for the McDonnell men in charge right now.

“Our business is cyclical – we are directly linked to the building industry

and that’s cyclical too,” he said. He admits the current economic climate and challenges facing the timber industry, in particular, are the hardest he’s ever seen. But the optimism is still there.

N.F.McDonnell & Sons has been at the forefront of the battle against the

sale of the South East forests and became one of the public faces of the unsuccessful campaign to prevent the sale . “It wasn’t about our company, it was simply the wrong thing to do with a public asset,” Ian said. “The quicker we just adapt the better though – look at Ash Wednesday,

February 16, 1983 saw 18,500 hectares of government owned forests and 2000ha of privately owned forests wiped out – that was $20million dollars of investment and assets up in smoke – but it gave birth to the woodchip industry.

N.F. McDonnell & Sons led that charge and seemingly will again. “What seemed a hopeless situation saw the woodchip innovation grow into a major component of the timber industry.”

And perhaps history is repeating itself. Despite the tough times, the company exported its first shipment of woodchips in November in what they hope will be an expanding market for them – a deal which was 12 months in the making. “We’ve seen amazing growth in the past two years,” Ian said.

One of the other challenges is attracting and retaining workers in to the industry.

“It’s never had a sexy image,” Ian said. “It’s always had an image of hard work, of dirty work, shift work and those

sort of things it’s hard to sell that, especially to the school kids.”

But one thing Ian knows is that through the ups and downs and all the challenges this is a family that toughs it out together. And that “family” extends to the long standing, loyal employees that have been just as big a part of the business’s success as those with the surname McDonnell.

Company secretary Gordon Bignell has given more than 30 years loyal service and there are others in the operation that are also approaching four decades of working for the McDonnell family.

“We’ve had people who have spent their whole working life here,” Ian said. One of those

Moving from Cobden, Victoria, he recognised the financial benefits of logging and milling the burnt timber. The men lived out of tents as they looked to establish a saw milling business and it was only in 1945 that Newman relocated the women of the family, purchasing a home in Davenport Street,

Millicent. January 5, 1946 marks the official start date for N.F.McDonnell & Sons. There were mills in Kalangadoo and Gippsland, and a 640acre family farm, which was the staple of the business from 1952-55 when the timber industry was at a low point.

But in 1955 the company returned to saw milling with a vengeance, and in 1957, the Suttontown Road site became McDonnell headquarters. At its height

it employed 250 people – mechanisation changed all that and today there are around 80 employees across transport, milling, administration, logging and the like.

is Ian’s father Les and while he retired in 2008 he still has an office at the Suttontown Road site and normally pops in for a coffee with the boys two or three times a week.

And then there’s general manager Craig Nisbett, the first non-family member to hold that position.

The customers and relationships that have been built there are also critical to the success story that is N.F.McDonnell & Sons. “Some of the people we deal with, started back when dad started,” Ian said. And customer relations is what Ian remembers his grandfather basing the business on.

“It was all about hard work and lots of it but also about how important your customers are,” he said.

“He was never one to take

a backward step – he said you need to believe in what you want to do and then just work really had to do it.”

And clearly they have belief – even in what Ian himself described as the “hardest times” he’s seen. N.F.McDonnell & Sons made a $6million investment in a major mill upgrade which was set for completion June last year.

“People might be doing it as tough as I’ve even seen but Mount Gambier will come through this,” Ian said.

Ian’s son Shaun, who like his father spent his childhood at the mill, has become the fourth generation to join the business and was arguably the keenest. “He always wanted to work here but I wanted him to get a trade before he started here,” Ian said. So Shaun completed a diesel mechanic apprenticeship and is now a director of the company as well.

And while none of the McDonnell women have been hands on at the mill, you can be rest assured their place in history will not be forgotten – at the very least by the McDonnell men. “Without then, this business wouldn’t be what it is – it’s as simple as that,” Ian said. “You work long hours and you’re all over the place and to know you have that support and that they are making sure everything else is running smoothly and taking care of the family.”

The timber industry has been the backbone of this region for that long as well - a major employer, a cornerstone to the economy and the basis for a number of associated industries as well. That means when the industry takes some heavy hits, so does the surrounding communities and over the past five years, the industry has spent more time in the news for job losses and mill closures than positive news. The wheel is turning though – major investment and new markets are now working their way into the headlines as the industry and its leaders in this region continue to work overtime to maintain and expand the opportunities presented by forests. “The industry is certainly in better

shape than it was 12 months ago,” CFMEU Forestry and Furnishing Division Greater Green Triangle district secretary Brad Coates said. “It has stabilised and the markets have improved but there’s still work to be done.” An upturn in the building industry has added to the positivity surrounding the timber industry, while woodchip exports are also providing a much needed boost.

“There have certainly been some jobs created through the woodchip exports,” Mr Coates said. “But that won’t last forever and the industry has to continue to look at securing their long term future.” Bio-energy and bio-technologies have been identified by industry leaders and stakeholders as the way forward in terms of manufacturing fuel and pharmaceuticals from wood waste, as well as the possibilities of cross-laminated timber.

Government assistance for some of the region’s smaller mills in recent times has also helped – not so much with job creation but with improving efficiencies and safety. And while there hasn’t been a storybook ending for everyone that has lost their timber industry job in recent times, the retraining programs and other assistance has seen the vast majority find work and, arguably most importantly, work they enjoy. Around 700 jobs have been shed directly from the timber industry in the past couple of years and retraining and skip development has seen many of those find work in new roles or other industries.

The aged care sector has been one of the big winners from this although many of the displaced timber workers

only have casual or part time positions.

“The 50-65 age group is where it has been difficult for them to find employment,” Mr Coates said. “Some have done more than half a dozen courses but that is a tough demographic – people don’t seem to want to employ people in that age bracket.” But with investment starting pick up again in the local timber industry and a generally more buoyant feel among the general business community in regards to the economy, there are a lot more positive signs than negative as the industry on which much of this region was built refuses to concede ground.

Forest nurseries were started at Wirrabara and Bundaleer in the mid-north and near Mount Gambier in the South East. The first forest plantation was established at Bundaleer in 1876 and included a large number of different tree species planted on a trial basis. The early plantings were mainly of native eucalypts, hardwoods from Europe and various conifers from Europe and North America. Only some of these species grew well enough to be considered for commercial planting. One of the most successful species was radiata pine, also known as remarkable pine, a native of the Monterey Peninsula in California. Various legends exist as to how this tree came to Australia – as ballast in colliers backloading from California, or as seeds or plants brought home by miners returning from the Californian goldfields. An avenue of Pinus radiata had been planted at the Adelaide Botanic Garden in about 1866. The earliest plantations in the South East were at Mount Muirhead, near Millicent; Mount McIntyre, near Mount Burr; and the Cave Range Forest Reserve, near Naracoorte. By 1918, the Government had reserved 111,909 acres (45,290 ha) of land for forestry. By 1900 the number of species being planted had been reduced to about half a dozen - sugar gum and five pine species: radiata, Aleppo, pinaster, Corsican and Canary Island. Of these, the performance of radiata pine was outstanding on most soils and sites within the higher rainfall areas of South Australia. Plantations continued to expand in the 1920s and 1930s. During this period, private forestry companies commenced operations as growers and timber millers

“When I was in my early twenties, I found myself in a situation that I’m sure is not uncommon. As a chef of nine years, I suddenly became less passionate about my position in the hospitality industry and found myself seeking a completely different role, a job that perhaps could be the ‘something’ I was looking for. My work with Dohnts began from the absolute ground up. I had no previous experience in the forestry industry, other than my own passion for all things that involved heavy machinery. What started as a skidder operator position, trained entirely on the job by ‘in house’ trainer ‘Duck’, soon evolved into a much greater opportunity to operate an infield chipper. With the role change came the responsibility of not only operating the chipper but also of managing the crew that worked alongside me. With the assistance of L.V Dohnt management, this job was made much easier after having completed a Harvest and Haulage Cert III and a Frontline Management Cert IV through the company whilst being able to maintain regular work hours in the bush and put these learned practices into place. My current position as infield supervisor allows me the opportunity to oversee several operations in the South East SA and Western Victoria.

It seems a far cry from the new boy who started driving skidders six years ago, and yet none of it would have been possible had it not been for the opportunities I was presented by Dohnts. The forestry industry can offer so much than one might expect, I believe I am a great example of how far this job can take you and of what you can achieve if you are prepared to show some initiative and work hard.”

My journey commenced by spending vital time with the in house trainer Peter Van Den Hoogen learning the basic but valuable skills to operate the forest machinery efficiently. I began in a 460 John Deere skidder then moved up to the TigerCat skidders, in the duration of a month. Since then I have moved in to driving Kaisers (Left hand Drive American Army Trucks), this entails moving the chip bins under the chippers to be loaded. This has been made a smooth transition due to the support and training from my coworkers - Mark Dycer, Annalise Van Der Laan, Adam Legutko and Chris Dohnt. Each employee looks out for one another, ensuring that each worksite/plantation is a safe, productive, happy and friendly environment.

BLUE LAKE Y HONOURS ITS BEST SWIMMERS Training for the winter swimming season has started in earnest for Blue Lake Y swimming club, but before jumping into the pool again after a short break, it was time to honour the swimmers for their great effort in the 2013/14 season. The swimmers deserve to be very proud of their efforts, with every swimmer achieving multiple personal bests.Coach Colin Smith said he was delighted with the results of last season and was looking forward to continued improvement and development with this young group of swimmers. “The spirit and support this team shows towards one another is great, they definitely have the loudest cheer squad at any carnival,” he said. If are interested in becoming part of the Blue Lake Y swim club, for fitness or competing they train during Winter at Swimskool on Keegan Street, Mount Gambier, Monday to Friday. MOUNT GAMBIER ATHLETES GAIN STATE SELECTION IN KARATE TEAM Shingokan Karate Mount Gambier sent a small team of three competitors to the Kobe-Osaka Karate Championships in Melbourne recently - a high standard competition and a compulsory event for South Australian state team hopefuls. Regular training in Adelaide, local dojo training in Mount Gambier, strong performance at the SA State titles and attendance at this Melbourne tournament, allows selectors to choose the best possible team to contend the National Championships in Perth later this year. Both Connor Prior and Mitchell Potter have been selected as SA team members in both Kata(forms) and Kumite(fighting) events. Both of these boys performed strongly at the recent championships and deserved selection, however the stand out performance on the day was from Jayden Prior. Jayden is unfortunately too young to have an event category at the National Championships, however he gained two gold medals in his kata and kumite events at this event. This follows up on his two recent gold medals in the same categories at the SA State Titles earlier this year. “This is an outstanding achievement for such a young karate student,” Shingokan Mount Gambier coach Geoff Rohde said. “Back to back wins in the SA State Titles and the Kobe-Osaka Championships - Jayden never looked like being challenged in either of his events. He was committed and very focussed at all times.” Rohde also praised the two boys who gained State selection.

MOUNT GAMBIER TO HOST STATE KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS Karate SA is proud to be bringing the annual SA Open Championships to Mount Gambier. Hosted by the Shingokan GojuRyu, the championships will see athletes from across the State, as well as Victoria, travel to Mount Gambier for this premier event.

The 2014 South Australian State Squad will be competing as well as many national and international champions. Whilst the standard of competition will be exceptionally high, it will also provide less experienced athletes a chance to compete on their home turf.

“Mount Gambier has two clubs affiliated with Karate SA, Sieshikan Australia and Shongokan Goju-Ryu that make up a large proportion of our regional members so it is a pleasure to bring this event to the town,” Karate SA president Glen Scott said. “It will assist in building relationships and increasing the profile of karate in the region.” The competition has also gained the support of Funakoshi Karate in Hamilton, Warrnambool and Camperdown, who will be in attendance. The competition, consisting of kumite (sparring) and kata (forms), will run all day Sunday at the Grant High School gymnasium. “The SA Open will provide an excellent opportunity for the regional community to observe the highest standards of karate on offer in Australia,” Shingokan Gojo-Ryu head instructor Geoff Rohde said. “Spectators are welcome and tickets can be purchased at the door on the day.” Taking advantage of the long weekend in June, there will be a training camp on Saturday, June 7. Kumite trainng will be conducted by national coach Matthew Johnson, along with other national and State coaches. A kata seminar will also be conducted by Con Kassis, international coach and member of the World Karate Federation technical and rules commission.

TEENAGER’S BRUSH WITH ROYALTY

A Mount Gambier teenager has described her brush with royalty as “an amazing experience” that she will never forget. Former Allendale East Area School student, Brittany Naismith (pictured ablve), attended last month’s State Reception for Young South Australian Community Leaders with their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The reception was held at the Playford Civic Centre in Elizabeth, and Brittany received her official invite from the Governor of South Australia, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce, and Premier Jay Weatherill. While security surrounding the guests of honour was tight, Brittany was one of the fortunate few to meet Prince William and Catherine in person. “To have such incredible people look me in the eye and to show such interest in what I was saying was beautiful. They are lovely people, so softly spoken and relaxed,” she said. Brittany, who is under the guardianship of the Minister, was the District Council of Grant’s 2014 Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year. She was nominated by Council to attend the reception, and youth development officer, Judy Goodman, said it was an “incredible opportunity for a very deserving young woman”. “Council nominated Britt because of her strong commitment to both her school community and the support she has given the District Council of Grant as our Geared2Drive Youth Ambassador, and we were thrilled when her nomination to attend the State Reception was officially accepted,” she said. As the inaugural youth participant in the Geared2Drive program, Brittany not only gained assistance in obtaining the ‘impossible goal’ of a provisional licence, but the added confidence to pursue her dream of studying Criminology and Psychology at university in Adelaide.

“Because I’m under guardianship of the minister, there’s a lot of policies and procedures with driving cars with my carers – including insurance problems – so I wasn’t able to have access to a vehicle to get my hours up,” she explained. “I want to thank all those people that supported the pilot program, as I wouldn’t have been able to achieve my goals without the Geared2Drive support.” Allendale East Area School principal, Beth Mahony, said the opportunity to meet the royals was the latest in a string of exceptional achievements for the former school captain, despite a challenging childhood. “We were so excited to hear that Brittany had been invited to meet the Royals in Adelaide.

She really flourished in the Area school setting at Allendale and is a wonderful example of success and resilience. She continues to amaze us by turning disadvantage into advantage with her positive approach to life,” she said.
