2014 Clark Rubber Australian Kelpie Muster Queens Birthday Weekend June 7 & June 8 See page 3 for details
HELEN ST.
COVER Kelpie Big thrills will be had at the 2014 Clark Rubber Australian Kelpie Muster this Queen’s Birthday weekend. On June 7 and 8, Australia’s biggest festival celebrating the nation’s own working dog – the kelpie – will take over the southwest Victorian town. An 8am Poet’s Breakfast starts the Saturday program, followed by the Kelpie Country Street Parade. Kelpies and their owners will then compete in various novelty events in and around Casterton’s main street, including the King of the Kelpies Triathlon – incorporating the dash, hill climb and high jump. Last year’s high jump winner Moe, owned by Jarrod Quick, cleared 2.4 metres. For the good-looking dogs there will be Kelpie Idol, some ducks will be rounded up in Kelpie Pinball and the sheep get a run in Mutton Mayhem and the youngsters are catered for with the Kelpie Kids program. Art-inclined patrons can check out the acquisitive art competition entries judged by well-known wildlife artist Steve Morvell, in the town
muster on the horizon Homegrown artist to judge kelpie art prize
hall. Stockmen and women with their horses and dogs will be tested against a mob of sheep in the Stockman’s Challenge on Saturday. Shearing and whip cracking demonstrations will be held on Saturday. But the big money event on Saturday will be the $8000 RMA Working Dog Futurity trial for dogs under four years old that were sold in the 2013 working dog auction. The winner takes home $4000. Organiser Rod James believes the
trial has the biggest prizemoney of any in Australia. “I don’t know of another trial in Australia that is worth that much,” he said. Mr James said entries were still coming in for the futurity trial and for Sunday’s Clark Rubber Working Dog Auction at Island Park. Dogs sold for up to $10,500 (Matthew Johnson’s Ben) at the auction last year and Matthew’s dog Tom went for a record $12,000 in 2012.
Sunday’s program will also include the Ag Art and Kelpie Photo competitions. A working dog training school will be held on June 9. Casterton Sandford Football Netball Club will hold a two-course meal on Saturday night in the Island Park clubrooms - $20 per adult and $10 for children 12 years and under. For more information on events and entries please call Casterton Kelpie Association secretary Linda on 0488 791 424.
Homegrown international wildlife artist Steve Morvell will judge the Casterton Kelpie Muster’s Acquisitive Art Competition this year. Steve has painted wildlife and nature scenes all round the world, with his respect for the subject enshrined in every brush stroke. Now the Halls Gap resident has turned his gaze closer to home out of regard for the bond Australian’s have with their own dog – the kelpie - by agreeing to judge the Clark Rubber Casterton Kelpie Muster’s Acquisitive Art Competition. In his 32 years as a professional artist and teacher he has been asked to judge many competitions, but he loves kelpies and like many of us, cried when he read the book Red Dog. And he has painted kelpies, for a mate, Pyrenees vigneron Simon Austerberry. “It’s the bond I love; that kelpies form with people,” Steve said. The purpose of the Acquisitive Art Competition is to gather a collection of
artworks depicting kelpies, for display in Casterton. Steve said he is looking forward to seeing the entries and attending the muster festival on Saturday, June 7. The worldrenowned nature and wildlife artist will be looking for excellence in the art competition entries. “I will also be looking for personal engagement – the artist has to show themselves in their art work. “An artist really has to put themselves into their artwork,” he said. “That’s why I don’t try
to paint anything I have met and experienced first hand - I wouldn’t even try.” Steve said art is a conversation that has to engage and say something to the viewer. “It is far more articulate than words can ever be,” he said. Steve also said an art work has to “stop you in your tracks”, like his Timbavati White African charcoal engraving, See http: //www.stevemorvell. com/mammals/imgpages/ Timbavati_white_African_ lion.htm. THE
VIRTUAL GASTRIC BAND A Natural, Safe, Effective Weight Loss Program
Of those 350 people who completed all four 4 sessions of the program, 345 people or 98.5% achieved a positive result. The total combined weight loss at the completion of the program was an impressive 1,680 kilos, and the total number of centimetres lost was a remarkable 6,150 cm. That equates to an average weight loss of 4.79 kg per person and an average loss of 16cm per person, after just 4 weeks. Of course, these figures are just average figures. Some people lost more than the average and some people lost less than the average. The weight loss journey has commenced for these people and no doubt their weight loss will continue as The Virtual Gastric Band continues to work for them.

The Virtual Gastric Band is a remarkable weight loss program. We use hypnosis to condition the sub-conscious mind into believing that a band has been placed around the top of the stomach in order to create a small pouch, thus reducing the amount of food one needs in order to feel full. The Virtual Gastric Band is for people who want to lose weight, but don’t want to go through a physical operation. The Virtual Gastric Band is available at a fraction of the cost and has comparable results.

at the theatre May 30 - Todd McKenney Sings Peter Allen LIGHTHOUSE THEATRE, WARRNAMBOOL Todd McKenney is back on stage doing what he does best, singing the songs of Peter Allen. This very personal show is a celebration of Peter Allen’s life.
LOCAL Portland A new emergency helipad is expected to be ready before Christmas on the grounds of Portland District Health (PDH). PDH last week starting community consultation to explain plans to construct the helipad between Sea View House and the hospital emergency department. Meetings will be held with residents and families of Harbourside Lodge and Sea View House and the broader community will be invited to comment on the plan. PDH chief executive officer Chris Giles said the helipad would provide a safe and efficient site to evacuate patients in need of urgent life-saving care outside of Portland. Previous plans to build the
helipad on track
helipad on the Ploughed Field were recently reviewed and the hospital site was the better option. “It was impractical to bring patients across the road under the previous plan as an ambulance crew would have been required. The Ploughed Field is also a very important historical link to Portland,” Ms Giles said. She said the new site was perfectly positioned next to the emergency department and was the safest and most practical location. “It is a more efficient use of resources and the best site for moving people in urgent need,” she said. The helipad does not require council planning approval but
PDH is working closely with Glenelg Shire to ensure traffic and other considerations are properly handled. It will require the removal of 10 car parks from Bentinck Street, up to two Norfolk Island pines the power lines and some shrubs, along with the relocation of the flagpole and the whale pot. Ms Giles said the car parks would be replaced on the hospital grounds. “We plan to create new car parks between Harbourside Lodge and the theatre area and re-mark existing car parks to provide more spaces,” she said. The helicopter will arrive over the Ploughed Field site and hover across to
the hospital at about 100m above Bentinck Street. Traffic lights will be installed at either end of the street and will be activated only when the helicopter is arriving and departing. Ms Giles said the new site earmarked for the helipad had been earlier mooted as a potential site for expanding the hospital and therefore not considered as an option. “The existing building is sufficient for our needs. If more capacity was required in the future we could redevelop and improve use of space in the existing building,” she said. “Glenelg Shire supports the idea and is working with us to move the project along, with the hope of having it completed this year.” There is an average of two helicopter transfers each month. Mrs Giles said a rooftop helipad was not practical and prohibitively expensive as it required considerable engineering to meet safety standards and the addition of elevator access to the emergency department below. “The proposed site is a good size and location and would not disrupt views for residents. We think the community will support the plan,” she said. PDH has been working on the helipad plan for several years in partnership with the Blue Ribbon Foundation and the Committee for Portland.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY The latest news from the Premier by Robbie Tansel
Are you buying or selling property? Contact South Australia’s largest, most experienced conveyancing firm
Brad, Andrea and Sonya look forward to providing you with a prompt, professional and friendly conveyancing service.
I received an email this week from one of my most avid readers. I thought I should share it with you. “Dear Robbie, Did you see how the Crows kicked a goal the other week against Collingwood after the siren went. It seemed like the umpires couldn’t hear the siren. What do you think? David from Dartmoor” Well it’s always good to hear from David so I thought I’d look into the issue a bit further and see what I could find out. Now obviously this is an issue with Jay Weatherill’s pride and joy, the Pinus Radiatus Adelaide Oval, kindly sponsored by the people of Mount Gambier and surrounding districts. I thought the best thing to do was make contact with Mr Weatherill and see what I could find out. I received
than willing to assist him in whatever way we can. He sent me a list of other issues and these are the solutions we’ve come up with. There is a leaky toilet in the upper deck of the Southern Stand. The money has to come from somewhere so Jay and I decided to sell a couple of computers. Sorry to Michelle and David in accounts payable who will now have to perform their jobs with pen and paper. Think of that water that isn’t being wasted now though, guys. The multi million dollar bridge that was built so that the people of South Australia wouldn’t have to walk a couple of hundred extra metres has been having some lighting issues. Jay couldn’t tell me whether some light globes simply needed to be changed or if it was possibly a little more serious. To be sure we could solve the problem we decided to make a couple of the lovely folks at Forestry SA redundant. Sorry again to Michelle and David. I don’t want it to seem that we are picking on you guys, but we couldn’t really justify your positions now that you have no computers. Realistically, what are you going to do with your days? Next it was brought to my attention that the mower the ground staff use is not cutting as neatly as
the following information. To deal with the siren not having a loud enough volume, the government have made the painful decision to sell off the Forestry SA fire fighting fleet. This includes trucks, planes, helicopters and other assorted vehicles. This might sound a little short sighted but think of the joy that all South Australians will feel when football umpires will be able to hear the siren really clearly. Silly me though, I didn’t realise that there were so many other problems with Pinus Radiatus Oval. When I heard, I said to Mr Weatherill that we the people of the Limestone Coast/Green Triangle/South East/Magical Fairy Land south of the Murray River that he has been completely unable to find or visit, are more

necessary on the oval. Jay said the blades probably just need to be sharpened so he suggested we auction a local 18 old’s virginity on eBay. Luckily Michelle and David, formerly from Forestry SA, have a daughter of eighteen (did I mention they’re married) so the Labor government will we rushing a new bill through parliament next week allowing the government to repossess children in cases of obvious desperate need for the greater good of the state. Anyway, David, I’m sure that you’ll be relieved to know that our government have everything under control. In related news, after the slashes made by the Federal government in their recent budget, and the effect they will have on State governments, Mr Weatherill has forward sold the rights to the Blue Lake to the people of Ethiopia for the next one hundred years. Athletics celebrates
The Mount Gambier District Little Athletics Centre’s (MGDLAC) 2013/14 season has drawn to a close after approximately six months of almost weekly track and field competitions. More than 250 young athletes aged from Under 6 to Under 17 and their families celebrated
their personal achievements during a recent trophy presentation night at the East Gambier Sportsmen’s Club, and president Jonathon Lillecrapp said the turnout reflects the strength of athletics in the region. “It’s been a fantastic season, with many
centre achievements and personal achievements,” he said. Trophies were presented to participants who showed the most improvement throughout the season, in keeping with the centre’s motto: ‘Family, Fun & Fitness – BE YOUR BEST’. The Delaney family collected the biggest haul after a stellar season; Neave Delaney scored the highest overall points for junior females, while big sister Jade won the senior award. Liam Delaney won overall highest points for the junior males, while the youngest family member, Shae Delaney, finished runner up for the under 8 females category. Conor Galpin won highest overall points
for the senior male section, and Parker Smith and Kyla Gordon collected male and female encouragement awards, with trophies also handed out to individual age group winners. “Little Athletics recognises that children vary widely in size and athletic ability, so the main aim for them is to improve over the season and to strive to achieve personal bests along the way, rather than necessarily finishing first, second or third,” Jonathon said. The wind-up also recognised personal commitment, with James Dukalskis notching up 200 attendances, and Luke Bull and Ryan Green joining the 100 club. Meanwhile, Sam Lock, Alex Lillecrapp, Michael
Galpin, Kaylee Whitehead, Shandeen Balshaw, Ella Doody, Ella Jones, Kyle Maney and Mitchell Duryea have all made it to 50 meets so far. Adult volunteers Allison Tucker and Lynton Thompson were named Club Person of the Year. A key seasonal milestone for the Centre was strong attendance at the State Individual Championships at Santos Stadium in Adelaide, with Mt Gambier athletes bringing home a record 27 of medals. The 2014/15 season will begin in October, and the centre wishes to thank the generosity of major sponsors Sinclair Wilson, Van Schaik’s Bio Gro, Quickmix Concrete, Andami IGA, Kimberley Clark, MGA Insurance Brokers and Gambier City Chemmart.

A significant handcoloured photograph of Edward Henty’s Portland home ‘Burswood’, dated circa1867-1875, was delivered to History House last week. The image, from a private Melbourne collection, was passed in at a recent Sotheby’s auction in Sydney and later offered to Glenelg Shire Council for the Cultural Collection. Measuring 21.5 x 30.5 cm, the silver gelatin photograph is heavily overpainted with watercolour and gouache, an opaque water-based paint. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Mayor John Northcott said there was so much history to our Shire that could be
reflected in images like this. “Burswood was constructed in 1856 in the Australian regency style and this early image shows the glasshouse conservatory on the western side, which was demolished prior to 1895,” he said. “An uncoloured copy of the photograph is held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria. “It has been suggested that the portly gentleman on the right is Henty himself and next to him his wife Anne Maria. Edward Henty died in 1878.” The image is signed Johnstone, O’Shannessy & Co Melbourne and the hybrid technique used
in this image, combining photography and painting, was a specialisation for this fashionable Melbourne firm. Henry Johnstone was an artist and a leading Melbourne portrait photographer in the 1860s and 1870s, while Emily O’Shannessy was one of a few successful women working in this field in the 19th century. Johnstone & O’Shannessy& Co. was also appointed as the royal family’s professional photographer whilst in Melbourne and the Duke of Edinburgh was photographed in their Bourke Street studios during the royal visit of 1868. The work will be included in a future exhibition at Portland Arts Centre, which will looks at Portland’s historic buildings.

This display celebrates the 150th year of this iconic building which was the home of Portland’s municipal administration for over a century. Built at a cost of just over £600 pounds by Portland stonemason William Robb, the building was designed by engineer John Barrows. The display includes a series of images of the building over time, the ceremonial trowel used to lay the foundation stone, the common seals of the Municipality, Borough and Town of Portland, and the elaborate mayoral chain gifted to the town in 1955, by the descendants of former Town Clerks, Edward and Noel Henry. Five super smart tips for tax time With piles of receipts to sort through and oodles of paperwork to gather, tax time can be, well, a rather taxing experience. But by putting in a little effort at the end of the financial year, people can reduce the amount of tax they pay and keep more of their hard earned cash in their pocket. For many people, contributing to super is one simple way to minimise their tax bill and boost their retirement savings at the same time. For others, by topping up their super before 30 June 2014, they may be eligible for a tax offset or even a government co-contribution. Here are five smart superannuation tips for tax time: • Get super smart if you’re selfemployed - super contributions are 100 per cent tax deductible for selfemployed people such as sole traders. By making tax deductible super contributions, the self-employed can significantly reduce their tax liability on their income from business sources, investments or even capital gains. But care needs to be taken not to exceed contribution limits as penalties apply. This limit is $25,000 for those aged less than 60. And currently, for people aged 60 and over this limit is $35,000. • Give your spouse’s super a boost - if your spouse is not working, or earns less than $13,800 per year, you may be entitled to claim an 18 per cent tax offset (up to $540) if you make a contribution to their super. This strategy will allow your spouse to build their super for retirement and reduce your tax bill. • Make the most of the Government’s co-contribution - eligible people who earn less than $33,516 this year can take full advantage of the Government’s co-contribution scheme if they make an after-tax contribution to their super. The Government currently contributes $0.50 for every $1 of non-concessional (personal after-tax) contributions up to a maximum of $1,000. For the 2013/ 14 year, a reduced co-contribution payment is available for incomes up to $48,515.
If you only see one movie on the big screen this year, make sure this is it – the Glenelg Shire promotional DVD public launch at the Portland Arts Centre. From the rocky coast to rolling grassy hills, windswept or golden glow, in four minutes Glenelg Shire couldn’t be captured more beautifully than how it’s presented
• Small businesses should ensure super is up to date for employees - in order to be eligible for a tax deduction during the current financial year, businesses need to make sure that all superannuation payments have been paid for their employees before 30 June 2014. • Review your super concessional caps ¬¬- people aged 60 and over can currently receive employer superannuation contributions via the super guarantee and salary sacrifice up to $35,000 before penalties apply. So it’s advisable for people to review their super before the end of the financial year, to ensure they don’t breach their cap each year. If people want to top up their super before the end of the financial year, be aware the contribution must be received by the super fund by June 30, so it’s important to allow time for it to be processed. Finally, tax matters can be complicated so people should seek help from their financial planner to ensure they receive advice about their individual circumstances.
John Northcott said the quality content of the DVD was a reflection of the calibre of the production team who put it together. “I encourage you all to see the fantastic work from these locally based producers by attending the DVD launch,” he said. “Among their extensive list of achievements, Powerhouse Productions owners Peter and Karen Corbett have worked
with Nicole Kidman to shoot a television advert for Swisse … we are proud to say that this couple call Portland home. “The DVD shows our region at its best and highlights all aspects that make living in south west Victoria great. “This launch is the chance for the community to come together and celebrate the place we live. “You won’t be disappointed.” The DVD launch will be held on Thursday, May 29, at the Portland Arts Centre. Entry is free with light refreshments provided. Doors open at 5: 30pm with the screening at 6pm. There will be a special presentation by producers of the DVD (Peter and Karen Corbett from Powerhouse Productions) as part of the launch. South-west Victorian farming women often manage budgets of more than $1million but still under-estimate the importance of their role. Two upcoming workshops are intended to reverse that perception and increase the business management skills of local farming women. The free `On The Money’ business and financial management workshops will be held in Hamilton on May 29 and Skipton on May 30 from 10am-3.30 pm. The workshops are being presented by financial adviser Anna Till from Amble side Wealth Advisers on behalf of a partnership between the Federal Government, South West TAFE, the Victorian Farming Federation and Southern Farming Systems. To register and complete a survey about the financial management needs of farming women, log onto http://bit.ly/ 1iPJoWd and click the survey button or contact Project Manager Mike Weise on 0423 716 453 or email mikew@clie ntvictoria.com.au. Ms Till said farming was

big business but doesn’t often get the recognition it deserves. “In most cases women on the farm handle the finances, but many do not realise the importance of their role. Good financial management skills are essential when you’re dealing with a seven-figure sum,” she said. Having grown up on a dairy farm in Princetown, Ms Till understands the ups and downs of living on the farm and is passionate about working with those who face the everyday financial struggles that come with working on the land. Ms Till will share tips to help farming women to talk more confidently with their accountant, bankers and other advisers. The sessions will help to educate and simplify complex issues so participants ‘get’ what is going on. They will help farming women to understand their financial statements and how to use them to make informed business decisions. “It is important to have good basic knowledge of financial skills to make
sure you get the most out of your business,” Ms Till said. Ms Till holds a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Financial Planning, Finance and Economics. The sessions will help women to develop their ability to recognise and understand cash position, profit and loss statements and balance sheets and to use their new knowledge to improve planning in their farming business.
On The Money will be delivered in a fun and informative workshop format and give participants opportunities to network and meet likeminded farming women. Project Manager for the VFF auspiced program, Mike Weise of Client Victoria, said the workshops were open to all farming women in Western Victoria, regardless of the type of enterprise. The workshops are fully subsidised and are specifically designed for farming women.

KEEPING THEIR EYE IN As winter approaches, it is good to know that you can still have a social game of bowls at the Millicent Bowling Club every Sunday afternoon from 1pm. The first hit out earlier this month saw 18 bowlers playing 2 games of 12 ends each in a 2 ball triples match. The winners that week were Jim Godden, Bill Davis and Rod Horne (pictured) who scored 57+22. The runners-up were Alby Cecotti, David Botting and Carlene Godden (55+12) and Neil Whelan, Alan Strother and Jan Buhlmann (54+11) finished third. This is a wonderful venue to keep your eye in during the off-season as well as learn a few new tricks-of-the-trade along the way.

TOP DEMON SET TO LEAD REGIONAL TEAM FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS South Gambier playing coach Luke Duncan has been appointed coach of the Murray South East Zone team, which will compete in the 2014 South Australian Country Championships on July 5 and 6 in Kadina. The former Penola coach is in his second year of coaching South Gambier in the Western Border Football League and as a player he has also played with Woodville West Torrens, Ardrossan, Henley, Port Adelaide Magpies and Barmera. He started playing senior football in the Riverland in 1998 through to 2002 with the Barmera Monash Football Club and played zone football for 3 of those years before heading to Adelaide to play with the Port Adelaide Magpies for two years. From there his football journey took him to the Henley Football Club in Division 1 of the Amateur League for 2 years and then onto Ardrossan in the Yorke Peninsula Football League. He again played zone football this time with the winning Central zone and was selected in the team of the carnival for 2006. In 2007 it was back to the SANFL with Woodville West Torrens for the year before venturing to the south east with his family and playing four years at the Penola Footblall Club. During this time he continued to play zone football for the Murray South East and was a constant selection in the team of the carnival and state teams. Playing in the Australian Country Championships in Canberra where he was among South Australia’s best players. Duncan has been a passionate player when it comes to representative football enjoying the opportunity to test himself against the best players in the state and has been a popular player with his team mates. He has been at his best when representing his state and will bring that passion to zone football. Duncan has replaced Justin McConnell who coached the zone team for three years and has overseen a very competitive team which has finished runner up in each carnival, his passion and ability will be missed. His commitment to the position as well as coaching at club level has been appreciated by everyone in the Murray South East zone and has laid a foundation for the future. McConnell leaves the coaching position having put in an enormous amount of time and effort of which is greatly appreciated. The new South East Zone Carnival which is being played on June 7 at Vansittart Park will give Duncan a great opportunity to see the players in action he wants in the training squad to represent the Murray South East zone team. The squad will be named after the carnival. Above - Luke Duncan keeping a close eye on his charges from the sidelines during an injury break from playing for South Gambier.

East Gambier went through 2013 without a win in the A grade netball but in the end it was worth the wait with the Bulldogs snaring an upset victory over Elastoplast Cup grand finalists North Gambier by one goal at Vansittart Park at the weekend. Teenager Mary Wilson debuted for the Bulldogs and what a debut it was as she stood up to the intensity and physicality of A grade competition to be East’s best in the nailbiting one goal victory. The 14 year old, who was this year selected in the Under 15 Schoolgirls State netball team, had been on coach Bo Richards’ radar for a while and will now be a regular part of the Bulldogs line-up. “I had thought for a few games that something needed to change in the goal circle and we thought we’d give Mary (Wilson) a go,” Richards said. “She was nervous as hell before the game but she definitely handled the physicality of it – she just stood tall and did her thing.” The victory was set up in the opening half as East capitalised on North’s unusually sloppy errors. “They did make a lot of errors early and we were able to capitalise on that and Mary’s accuracy made sure it counted,” Richards said. East led by eight goals at quarter time and extended that to 12 at the half. Wilson continued to be the focal of the attack line, while Morgan Amy was creating plenty of opportunities at the other end as passing errors and missed shots ensured North could make no impact on the deficit. Casey Horrigan entered the fray in the third quarter when Morgan Amy left the court for treatment to an injury, while North also made a raft of changes, as they did at quarter time. Alisha Bryan entered the contest at goal shooter with Ashlee Kalantarian moving to the attacking wing, Alannah Campbell to goal keeper and Leanne Cameron out to goal defence. The Tigers certainly improved in the third and went goal for goal with the tenacious Bulldogs but the margin was still 12 at the final change. Abbey Duncan started to come into her own in the second half, and she was one of the dominant factors in North’s final quarter comeback that saw the home side fall one goal short of the miracle recovery. Campbell and Meg Gazzard were keys in creating the final quarter turnovers and Duncan finished the opportunities well but it was too little too later from the Tigers. “We just ran out of legs,” Richards said. “They were definitely fitter than us and that’s something we have to work on.” But in the end, the Bulldogs not only broke their winless drought but also unearthed another fine young talent in Wilson to go with Brenna McKay and Tenille Gray, who have also played their roles at senior level, although neither was available on Saturday. The Casterton-Sandford-South Gambier clash was also a one goal margin with South hanging on for victory, while Millicent defeated West Gambier by 10 goals. For the third time now since 2012 the GolfSE Junior Academy have held their annual challenge against the Henley High School Specialist Sport Golf squad. Played over two days on two of the regions top courses the challenge has been a great opportunity for the local academy to test themselves against the juniors from Henley. With both squads having players with State level experience the matches were keenly contested and in a twist from the normal matchplay format the games were played over the whole 18 holes before deciding the result. Day one on May 20 was the individual matchplay at the Mount Gambier Golf Club with the Mount Gambier team getting off to a great start recording a 7.5 to 3.5 win. Day two was at the Millicent Golf Club for a Pinehurst matchplay event where the locals once again prevailed 3.5 to 2.5 to give them a total score of 11 to 6. With the last three events being won by the hosting team the GolfSE Academy now have the challenge of trying to upstage Henley at their homebase, the Grange Golf Club where they do the majority of their practice and playing. Henley High School is a specialist sport school offering a wide range of sports to aspiring juniors. Many country juniors have made their way to Henley taking up the opportunity of combining their schooling with their sporting passion.
Earlier this month the Grant High School Year 8 Netball Program, combined with Allendale Area School’s 8-10 Netball Program took part in the beginners THREE umpiring program. State League umpire Deanna Stainer took the girls through their paces, challenging all students involved to understand the importance of learning to umpire. The students took part in number of drills and activities to hone their umpiring skills. One of which involved the girls being tested on the length of their 3 seconds for a held ball. The results were quite surprising to the students and highlighted the importance of concentrating at all times during a game. Other activities revolved around length and type of whistle blow, using a variety of hand signals and situations in game play. The students were also made aware of all rules in netball and the new rule changes. They were encouraged to get out into the community and become involved in umpiring with their respective association and clubs. PIONEERS SPLIT TOUGH TASMANIAN ROAD DOUBLE The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers started their tough Tasmanian road double last Friday night with a narrow nine point loss to North West Tasmania but rebounded nicely on the Saturday night with a strong victory over the Hobart Chargers. Things were all squared away at half time of the Friday night clash with the Thunder and while the second half was also tightly fought it was the home side that got over the line. All the key stats were even in the nine point loss except for the three point shooting that saw the Thunder hitting nine from 24, with the Pioneers totally losing the radar, converting two from 17 - in the end it was the difference. Saturday night, it was the Pioneers’ third quarter that set up the victory. After an even opening half, that saw the visitors leading by seven, but a 34-21 third quarter, the Pioneers were in control and enjoyed a 19 point victory. North West Tasmania 98 d Pioneers 89 (T. 4BLOK
There is always a better way
a decade on & look at us now... It’s hard to believe that 10 years ago we first started looking at this thing called eBay. We had trouble finding a user name to register our account, so decided to go with our surname and number of members in our family, and this was the birth of 4Blok. Our first eBay sale which was a Chev Sump sold on May 11 in 2004 using the dreaded dial up internet. This was only ever intended to be a hobby, but we were driven by demand for products that we had available, so in 2008 we registered 4Blok Pty Ltd as a company specialising in Holden, HDT, HSV spare parts and accessories. The rest as they say is history....cont. page 42. Right - The Blok family.

Congratulations to Heath & Debbie at 4Blok for 10 years of being online & their new showroom
4BLOK - FINDING A BETTER WAY Our story (in our words)... Our business was growing at 45% annually and those in business would know this growth comes with its own set of challenges. To date we have sold in excess of 30,000 items on eBay, and additional sales through other channels such as website, trading post, door and phone sales. We currently employ 11 full time staff and this will continue to grow along with growth of the business. For those who think an online business is easier than a retail outlet they are wrong. It
is very challenging to meet peoples needs and requirements Australia wide as the customers can not touch and feel what is available for sale. You have to work extremely hard for customer satisfaction and due to our location delivery times can be very challenging. Although this part of the business is improving as online recognition is continuing to grow. However on the upside, online sales allows you to compete on a global market and not just locally, so we would encourage people to give it a go, what do you have to lose? Cont. page 43.
Proud to be associated with the team at 4Blok.
Congratulations on your milestone.

There is always a better way
4BLOK - FINDING A BETTER WAY Our story (in our words)... From page 42 During our business growth it has been very challenging for us when others have copied what we have built online and become direct competition, some were not successful thinking it was going to be easy, however it is a big market that everyone can try and tap into and have a share of. 4Blok has now diversified so the competition does not have such an effect on our business and we strive
to be leader in the online sales market not a follower. The recognition of our 4Blok locally has opened up many doors to enable us to grow the business further. We are currently working with Employers Mutual and AWIC in training and rehabilitation of injured workers to get them back into the workforce. We are able to reskill people in different fields due to the diverse range of tasks that are performed throughout the business including dismantling, cleaning, warehousing, through to eCommerce. There is always a better way 4BLOK - FINDING A BETTER WAY Our story (in our words)...
• • •
From page 43. During that latter part of last year we had the opportunity to purchase 11 truck loads of surplus new Holden and HSV stock, which included 400 VE Ute Tailgates in various colours, mag wheels and enough VE suspension to supply everyone in Mount Gambier In January this year we had the opportunity to purchase a private collection of more than 30 years of Holden, HDT, Peter Brock and HSV memorabilia. Within this collection there is also 40,000 posters both signed and unsigned by popular race car drivers. Purchasing both of these enabled us to secure a niche market online in volume that no one else currently has available. 4Blok is currently working on a very exciting project that we hope we can bring to Mount Gambier, we are sure no-one would have thought this could be possible. Hopefully this will be revealed in the not too distant future. With the completion of the new retail outlet we are now stocking a unique range of products that have not always been available in Mount Gambier, for the car enthusiast through to the hobbyist .
4Blok has secured some distributorships – such as the below, just to name a few. • • • • • • • • •
