A mini-field of women event, incorporating more than 100 pink lady silhouettes, will be on display at The Cave Gardens in Mount Gambier, on Saturday, June 28 at 5.30pm, in a meaningful show of support for women and families affected by breast cancer. Event organiser and Breast Care Nurse Margie Atwell said each day 41 women learn they have breast cancer and seven lose their lives

to the disease. “Each time a woman hears she has breast cancer those around her in the community are also affected,” Margie said.

“Although breast cancer care and knowledge has come a long way, women are still being diagnosed every single day and these women and their families need our help.

“I encourage anyone who wants to show their support for breast cancer

awareness to head to The Cave Gardens on 28 June at 5.30pm and leave a personal message of support.

“Breast cancer is an issue close to our whole community and this is a great opportunity to show how much we care about this issue.”

LOCAL Breastscreen BreastScreen SA’s mobile screening unit will be visiting Keith to provide free screening mammograms (breast X-rays) to more than 600 local women.

Located in the casualty car park of the Keith Hospital, appointments for screening will begin in mid-June and conclude in early July. This free government service is primarily recommended for all women aged 50 to 69 years without breast symptoms. Local women who are eligible for screening will receive invitations over the coming weeks and new clients are also welcome to make a booking. Appointments can be made by phoning 13 20 50, and a doctor’s referral is not required. It is estimated that for individual women in the 50 to 69 year age group, having

Method Cook pasta in a large saucepan of boiling, salted water, following packet directions until tender. Drain. Transfer to a large heatproof bowl. Preheat oven to 180C/ 160C fan-forced. Cook bacon in a large non-stick saucepan over medium heat for 5 minutes or until golden. Add garlic and onion. Cook, stirring for 2 minutes or until onion is soft. Add to pasta. Toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper. Spoon mixture into a 12 cupcapacity ovenproof dish. Top with tomato.

Sprinkle with breadcrumbs and remaining cheese. Drizzle with oil. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until top is golden. Stand two minutes. Serve.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan visited Casterton today to announce the Victorian Coalition Government would invest $15,000 in the $20,000 Casterton Kelpie Interpretive Centre Feasibility Study. Mr Ryan was joined in Casterton by Member for Lowan Hugh Delahunty and The Nationals candidate for Lowan Emma Kealy, as well as Glenelg Shire Council representatives. Council applied for the Regional Development Australia Putting Locals First Grant in 2013 to support the project Feasibility Study, which will involve extensive investigation and research to support the decision making

We’re going to need to tweak things a little though. For starters I think life coaching is a growth industry, and you’re right, I’m going to be brilliant at sorting people out. I think we’re missing out on easy bucks though if we don’t also add a euthanasia department to the business.

I think I’m going to be able to turn quite a lot of these lost souls around, but I also know that there are some

that are so far gone that the only option will be putting them out of their misery. If they were only making their own lives miserable it would be fine, but we all know that it impacts on all of us. For example I recently went through the drive through of a food outlet. To protect everyone involved I’ve changed several of the details, but let me be clear, something very much like this happened to me.

Let’s just say I ordered two large chips. That’s a pretty basic order. The person taking my order then told me my order would cost five dollars. I know for a fact that the chips cost five dollars each so I immediately know that maybe there is a problem.

At the next point in the transaction I try to check my order saying, “So that was two large chips?”

Thankfully at this point

the server realises they’ve made a mistake and say, “I thought you said one large chips. Sorry I’ll fix that.”

She then says, “That will be eight dollars fifty.” You can probably see there’s a problem at this point. Two times five does not equal eight dollars fifty.

I once again try to confirm if everything is as it should be. “Was that for two large chips?” “Yes,” says my server without looking. She then makes what I think is a good decision and actually looks at the computer to check and realises, “Actually I accidentally put one large and one small chips.” At this point she has already taken my money and given me my change so she doesn’t want to try and fix the problem properly.

She’s struggling to deal with any of this even with a computer in front of her.

So instead she says, “I’ll just go and tell the people getting your order to get you two large chips.” You can probably guess where this is going. When I receive my food I get…one large and one small chips. I then explain to the person who gave me the chips, “The previous woman said she had made a mistake and was going to tell you that it should be two large chips.”

The person serving me then says, “That will cost you two

dollars.” For those of you with functioning grey matter doing the maths at home, you will probably realise now that not only have I been mucked around, but I am now being overcharged for the inconvenience and disgraceful service I have received. No amount of life coaching would help these oxygen thieves.

That’s where we’ll need the euthanasia clinic. The great news is, none of them are smart enough to know what euthanasia is.

These knuckle draggers would probably just think they were going to get introduced to Angelina Jolie’s children. Hope you get that one. Grant District Council is set to receive a road funding windfall with more than a million dollars being added to the council coffers. The Australian Government is delivering on its plan to build safer roads and a stronger economy through its record $500 million investment in the national Black Spot Programme.

Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs and Member for Barker, Tony Pasin today announced funding of $2,242,000 to fix four dangerous black spots in Barker. The other approved Barker projects are: • Rural City of Murray Bridge: $530,000 to install sections of safety barrier on the South East Freeway, Callington.

• Rural City of Murray

Bridge: $427,000 to install painted turn lanes, remove vegetation and improve sight lines, improve/ reinforce priority signs and stagger intersection. Mannum Road, Pallamana.

• Mid Murray Council: $185,000 to Increase shoulder width around outside of curve and install audio tactile edge line. Sturt Highway, Truro The projects were recommended by a panel of independent road safety experts and will be delivered during the course of the coming financial year (2014-15).

Mr Pasin said this investment in Black Spot projects will deliver safer roads for Barker through targeted upgrades proven to deliver results.

“Black Spot projects

target dangerous roads to save lives and reduce road trauma, ensuring our local roads are safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

“Anyone can suggest an intersection or stretch of road they believe should be considered for a safety upgrade, and we strongly encourage all councils and individuals to submit their nominations,” Mr Pasin said. LOCAL School Mount Gambier High School has recently purchased 100 rainbow trout and is using them in its new aquaculture subject. This new one semester course will involve Year 11 students monitoring and raising the fish. The students will be responsible for maintaining the water quality by measuring temperature, oxygen levels, pH and nitrates.

The students will also be feeding the trout and will record their weight at regular intervals.

A recirculating water system is in place so that the waste products can be removed to avoid the water becoming toxic.

This is done by using

sets up fishy program rows of plants whereby the roots of the plants will clean the water and remove any nitrates and ammonia from the system. The clean water is then fed back into the tanks.

The benefit of using a system like this is that we will be able to grow a large variety of edible herbs and lettuce that can be used by the school’s Food and Nutrition classes.There is a high level of student and community interest in this subject, and the school has received support from Bunnings Warehouse Mount Gambier, who have

generously donated 80 plants to use as well as Ned’s Mount Gambier who have also donated several large tubs that were used to transport the fish from Tooperang Trout Farm near Mount Compass. Towards the end of term four the fish will be filleted and smoked. They will then be vacuum packed and sold back to the community.

Mount Gambier residents will be able to get free health checks next week at a Pit Stop event being organised by the South East Regional Community Health Service. The Pit Stop Health Initiative will be held this Thursday at Market Place Shopping Centre, Penola Road, Mount Gambier, between 10am and 3pm.

Community nurse Lisa Maywald said the Pit Stop aimed to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining your health.

“Most people take reasonable care of their vehicles, following regular maintenance schedules and mechanical repairs at

the hint of a strange noise or rust, so why not their bodies too?” Lisa said.

“The challenge at the Pit Stop is to see if your body will pass the pits with flying colours or be issued with a yellow sticker for further maintenance.

“Regular preventative maintenance will help make sure your machine is firing on all cylinders.”

At the Pit Stop people will be able to: • Have their blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels taken • Get advice on healthy eating, exercise and waist measurements • Check their alcohol consumption

• Consider quitting smoking to reduce risk of lung cancer and other diseases • Take a stress and mental health quiz to see if their coping skills are working • Get information on men’s and women’s health issues and bowel cancer • Get information on skin cancer awareness • Find out more about immunisations/vaccinations • Check energy levels with exercises and gain information on keeping flexible and good back care.

South East Regional Community Health Service has been providing Pit Stop events for the past nine years to communities

in the region. There has been fantastic community engagement and many partnerships have been built up with local businesses, work places, schools, sports and community groups.

This year the Pit Stop team will work in collaboration with the University of South Australia and Flinders University Rural Training Centre to provide hands on primary health care in a rural community setting for health students in their final year of study. Glenelg Shire Council’s efforts in promoting a healthier community have been recognised, with Council’s Get Active Glenelg2Grampians program nominated for a 2014 Heart Foundation Local Government Award at the end of last month. The awards recognise and showcase Councils who are working to improve heart health through building a sense of community, encouraging people to be physically active, be smoke free and make healthy food choices. The Get Active Glenelg2Grampians program met the criteria for nomination through addressing a number of healthy community elements, including opportunities for recreational and incidental physical activity, opportunities for community members to lead interactive and socially connected lives, and appropriate, well designed and maintained infrastructure that supports recreation, social interaction and active transport options. During the past 12 months, the Get Active G2G program has delivered a long list of initiatives including: Heart Foundation Walking, led by volunteer walk organisers with four groups established in Glenelg Shire; Austcycle, where participants learnt riding and bike maintenance skills and community-based healthy eating and physical activity programs, with 17 community organisations from Hamilton, Portland, Casterton, Heywood, Merino and Glenthompson receiving small Get Active Grants to increase their capacity to deliver healthy lifestyle programs.

‘Fitness in the Park’ comprising free

fitness classes at open spaces across the Shire during February and March and new outdoor exercise equipment installed at three sites - Hamilton Lakes Edge Adventure Playground, Portland Fawthrop Lagoon and Merino Lion’s Park were other successful ideas put to the community during the life of the program. One of the most popular initiatives was the Fruit and Vegie Gang, with their message of increasing fruit and vegetable consumption. From the Portland Upwelling Festival to the Dartmoor Show, Tyrendarra Show, Merino Show and Heywood Wood Wine & Roses Festival it was hard not to take notice of the human–sized fruit and vegetable pieces handing out free fruit at major local events during the last six months. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr John Northcott said the success of these program proved that people wanted to healthier. Often these people just need a bit of help to start a change in lifestyle and then the support and motivation to keep going,” he said. “Program participants and stakeholders are now assisting with the preparation of the program evaluation report, which will be made public later this year and provide valuable information for the community, government and other stakeholders.”

Glenelg Shire Council wrapped up the program in May, three years after being awarded a $703,607 Australia Government Healthy Communities Initiative Grant, with funding shared with Southern Grampians Shire Council.

Last Thursday the Millicent Bowling played the Scott’s Group of Companies’ 2-4-2 competition.The day was tinged with sadness with the club mourning the loss of Bob Foster, a generous, long time sponsor of the club. President Derk Pietersma had the honour of presenting belated “8 Badges” to Bill Fennell, Peter Saunders, Fay Richards and an absent Ed Fitter. These badges were earned in Division 5 team in the 2013-14 season. Forty-seven bowlers took to the greens with the pairing of Wayne Burris and Dell Parsons (33+11) taking out the day, with the triples team of Graham Parsons, Alby Cecotti and John Scudds (33+9) finishing as runners-up. Other winning combinations were Rosalie Burdon and Carl Schapel (32+8), Jan Buhlmann and Denis Clifford (32+5), Ray Doeke and Phil Dowdell (31+8), Heather Carthew and Ian Ross (31+6), Jim Campbell and Jim Godden (31+5), Peter Saunders, Mary Campbell and Derk Pietersma (31+5), Max Richards and David Crase (30+7), Alan Strother and Terry Barnes (29+5) and a draw was played between the teams of Lyn Scudds and Glen Schapel (19+20) and Peter Hyland and Marino Gandolfi (21+20). Although not appearing in the ‘winner’s circle’ the pairs’ team of Adriana Ross and Neil Whelan had an 8 on the second end of their contest.

rail land makeover A green ‘lung’ is breathing new life into Mount Gambier’s rail lands. Two hectares of turf is being rolled out across the oncederelict site, signalling major progress at the city’s new multi-purpose public space. City of Mount Gambier Manager Regulatory Services, Michael Silvy, said the recent burst of warm weather followed by late autumn rains have enabled maximum productivity at the site. “It’s great to finally see the ‘green’ elements being introduced. Now that we have addressed the contamination issue, everyone will begin to see significant change as the area is transformed from a derelict industrial space into a natural environment,” he said.

“The shared bike and walking path, which was once the railway line, is expected to be finished in the next few days, and more major changes are in store over the coming weeks.” A creek designed to flow into an urban wetland is also now complete, while the concrete-lined Pond 1 and rock-lined Pond 2 are expected to be finished by the middle of the month.

By the end of June, a fully automated irrigation system will be ready to water nearly 100 mature trees, with construction of the highly anticipated nature play area set to continue throughout July and August. Last month, the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West began planting hundreds of native species at the wetland, and members are planning to complete the job after the long weekend.

“It’s a great fellowship opportunity,” said club president Lisa Rowley.

“Sometimes it doesn’t seem like you’re actually doing any hard work when you’re having a laugh at the same time – it’s been a lot of fun.” The Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West was inspired to become involved in the rail lands project following a council presentation at one of their meetings. “The Council has been very helpful to us with our own fundraising initiatives, so we wanted to put some of that money back into a community project,” Lisa explained.

“It’s a place where businesses and locals who have helped us can also go to reap the benefits.”
