COVER A quaint corner hideaway with plenty of suprises on offer Cupkates is a picture perfect business from the stylish vintage decor, to the old fashioned sweet treats, to owner Kate Rowley’s fitted floral dresses and dainty cardigans that loom as a throwback to the 1950s. And while Kate remains true to her original vision, the Cupkates story has evolved since opening its doors almost three years ago and while the gorgeous cupcakes will always be the centrepiece of her unique cafe, Kate has listened to her customers and provides so much more. The quaint corner hideaway has developed a strong take away coffee trade and has a delicious light lunch menu that has recently added homestyle, winter warming soups to the menu. So while the high teas, children’s parties and vintage china hire are still integral parts of the business, Kate has also looked to develop her business into a quiet, relaxed coffee and lunch destination, away from the hustle and bustle of the city traffic and providing the lure of a casual light meal and a quiet catch up with friends.

It took Kate heading overseas almost five years ago for her to start to narrow down what it was she really wanted to do. Living in North London, Kate secured a pub job before securing a position at a cupcake shop. It was her lightbulb moment in terms of what she wanted to do. “Mum and I had always talked about opening some sort of cafe business probably but working in the cupcake shop really defined for me what it would look like,” Kate said. And so, returning home after 18 months in London, Kate decided to immediately put her business vision into practice. “I knew if I just went back to where I had been working before I left, I would have just stayed in my comfort zone and not tried to go out on my own,” Kate said. “Mum and dad encouraged me to bite the bullet and start my own business and I thought, why not, at least I’ll be doing something I love.”

Kate’s basic plan was a cafe style business.

One of the layers of that plan was for it to be something different and that’s how the vintage tearoom idea evolved. Watching the high tea phenomenon in action in London, Kate knew she had her point of difference right there. “I knew I wanted the vintage feel and I wanted the business to be fun,” she said. And she must have done something right, securing the 2013 Influential Women In Business Young Business Woman of the Year Award. Regardless of what business she opened Kate always wanted it to be about the experience and she feels she has achieved that with Cupkates. “It’s nice because everyone is happy when they are here, it always feels relaxed,” she said.

City Snapshot #19 MESSAGE FROM THE CITY As we enter into the new financial year, it is a perfect opportunity to reflect whilst looking ahead to the future. We have much to be proud of in Mount Gambier, and much to look forward to.

The City of Mount Gambier remains committed to identifying opportunities, strengthening our vision and supporting initiatives and projects aimed at attracting further business, visitation and support for our community to grow and prosper.

The demolition of the Old Hospital building is now complete and plans for the original laundry are beginning to take shape, with major works expected to be completed by August. Council believes that the laundry’s positioning on the slope of the hill showcasing impressive panoramic views over the City and Crater Lakes precinct, together with the expansive shelter and facilities will make the ideal venue for special occasions, including family picnics, concerts and weddings. It is exciting to see the potential of the site unfold and the development of a year-round social gathering space for our community. Major progress can also be seen at the once-derelict Rail Lands site with the development of a new multi-purpose public space and it has been fantastic to see such a high level of community support for this project. The support of the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West is a great example of the perpetual momentum created when the community is working collaboratively for the benefit of our future. Predicting the future is fraught with problems. Yet this is what we all want to know so we are well prepared for the challenges and opportunities it provides. We are fortunate that we live in a safe and well-planned city with access to a wide range of services. Many of us enjoy an excellent standard of living, but we understand that this is not the case for everyone. Addressing issues of inequity via education and training and employment in rewarding and secure jobs is a challenge across Australian society. This is no less the case in Mount Gambier.

Council believe there is much we can do as a community to address issues that concern us. Sure, other governments play an important role here; however our view is that our community also plays a central role and this is the challenge before us. Mount Gambier has many attributes and our aim is to ensure the City is well placed now and into the future making best use of its resources. The City of Mount Gambier has commenced work preparing the ‘futures paper’ for city development, as we focus on our collective future. We are focussing on four interrelated characteristics; our people, our location, our diverse community and our climate, natural resources and heritage. When these four characteristics are working together we are more likely to be a prosperous and resilient city. This is our vision for the future. We are striving to make Mount Gambier an even better place to live, work and play. Working together will ensure Mount Gambier is a prosperous and resilient community, one where everyone has the opportunity to participate and develop as they desire. COMMUNITY SUPPORT AT RAIL LANDS The Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West have been hard at work contributing to the transformation of the once-derelict Rail Lands site; following the Club’s generous donation of $40,000 in a bid to give back to a community which has supported it over many years. In addition to funding, the Club is very proud and excited to be involved, demonstrating the sort of work that they do as an organisation by providing labour on site. Two working bees have already been held at the site, planting hundreds of native shrubs; whilst development guidelines have stipulated that several heritage features be reinstated in order to preserve an important layer of local history. Members have also volunteered to refurbish original telegraph poles and complete fencing along Wehl Street, and the construction of at least one bridge across a creek designed to flow into an urban wetland is also on their to-do list.

The Club is eager to put a portion of the funds previously raised back into the community for the benefit of the community, so that everyone can reap the benefits and really enjoy this new public space.

GENERATIONS COMBINE The Mount Gambier Library is excited to be trialling a project in conjunction with Boandik Lodge and Tenison Woods College, loaning iPads to residents in the aged care facility so that with the help of students they can learn how to access the wide range of eResources available at the Library; assisting them to make book and magazine selections based on their interests in the comfort of their own home. Students also introduce participants to apps and games on the iPad that can enhance their cognitive ability and connect them with family and friends. The functionality provided by this technology includes being able to increase the font size, touch screens and audio capabilities which lends itself very well to those who experience vision impairment and mobility issues. The project has had an impact on both the residents and students delivering social and learning benefits. LOCAL LOCAL Kathleen Millikan Obstetrician to introduce new services in Portland The Centre has been

Portland’s new obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr David Morris is hoping for a bit less adventure in his new role.

After dealing with pre-teen pregnancies and flights in small planes in outback Western Australia, Dr Morris is looking forward to keeping his feet firmly on the ground and introducing new services for Portland district women. Dr Morris starteds at Portland District Healthlast Wednesday, easing pressure on the existing service and creating more opportunities for local births. Dr Morris is a Fellow of the Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. He completed his specialised training in England where he also did a doctorate in the immunology of ovarian cancer.

He was the consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Horsham for eight years until 2007 before leaving to care for his ailing mother. Since returning to the workforce in 2008 he has worked for clinics doing day gynaecology, day surgery at the Bendigo hospital and locum work. His last locum work took him to Karratha in Western Australia.

“There you’re dealing with 12 or 13 year old Indigenous girls who are having babies and miner’s wives saying they’d like the baby tomorrow,” he said. He also did the flying gynaecology service based in Roma. “They flew me around to these small hospitals with far fewer facilities than you have in Portland. We just had to cope.” However, a close encounter with a fatal air crash was enough to convince him to look for another option.

“Two cattle guys flew out in their Cessna at night but their engine stalled and they crashed and died. When we flew over the wreck the next day I decided I’m not coming back here again; I don’t want to be in anything smaller than a jumbo.”

Dr Morris has enjoyed serving rural communities. “The big cities are quite competitive,” he said. “There are a lot of women who want complicated surgery

and there is a big consumer demand for instant surgery because of the busy lifestyle. They want to come in, get fixed and get out the same day. “That’s much more stressful than in the country where you can take your time to explain things properly.” He also appreciated the lower infection rates of smaller hospitals. “If you don’t want a secondary infection, go to a regional hospital, not a big city hospital.” The recruitment of Dr Morris will lead to fewer gaps in the Portland-based birthing service and allow more women including first-time mothers to have their babies in town.

“I am looking forward to helping more women to have their babies in their local community,” he said. Dr Morris said he was also looking forward to establishing a colposcopy and mirena clinic. “Women are leaving Portland and going to Warrnambool for that at the moment,” he said. “I’m bringing with me my examination couch and a colposcope, so that is a bonus.” Dr Morris said women with high risk conditions would still be referred to larger hospitals. “Portland looks very nice. I look forward to enjoying the lifestyle, getting the clinics going, getting more women to stay there and have their babies,” he said. “The other thing I look forward to is paddling up the Glenelg River in my sea kayak.”

nominated for a Victorian Government Best Start Program award in recognition for its leadership, outstanding achievement, dedication and innovation in improving outcomes for children and their families.

The Casterton-based centre was nominated in the 2014 Early Years Awards in the category: Better access to child and family support, health services, schools and early education and care services. Best Start is a Victorian Government early years initiative, which aims to improve the health, development, learning and wellbeing of all Victorian children.

The Kathleen Millikan Centre has already forged close links with health/allied services, schools, providing a friendly and responsive centre for town and neighbouring farming families. The facility also provides space for the community to meet after hours.

Mayor John Northcott said the centre was quickly becoming a very important part of the Casterton community. “Links with employment agencies, TAFE and universities has increased employment and adult education opportunities through school-based apprenticeships, parenting programs and workplace trainees,” he said.

“The Centre’s Maternal Child Health (MCH) unit works closely with the local hospital to improve identification and engagement of vulnerable children and their families in Casterton.

“The monthly meetings between MCH and the hospital have now expanded to include educators, teachers and other professionals.

“The Centre also works closely with the two primary schools and provides before and after school programs in this new facility.

“Finally, the playgroup, though not located in the centre, has an open invitation to use the indoor/outdoor play spaces and regularly shares ideas and resources.” The award nomination was submitted at the end of May and will be announced during Children’s Week celebration October 18 – 26 .

Method Blanch the cauliflower in a saucepan of boiling salted water for 1-2 minutes until just tender. Drain well and set aside. ADVERTORIAL I Gardenarium Mid winter rose & tree sale It feels the coldest it has been in a long time after that exceptionally mild start to winter, which was welcomed by us as we processed the thousands of trees and fruit trees arriving for bare rooted sales and of course digging the thousands of roses from our fields and preparing them for sale too.

Alas, we are still going with processing orders and digging, so hopefully soon we will see the end and get all of the customer orders out and interstate orders packed. Now is the best time to finish off all that serious planting, especially deciduous trees and fruit trees and roses, and make the most of the fantastic rains. Everyone whips into a frenzy as the latter part of the bare rooted season draws to a close, believing that there will never be trees, fruit trees and roses ever again (until next year at least). Not true - at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees and Roses, we carry the entire range of varieties all through the year, so there is no need to panic buy. Also, many believe that plants are less costly at this time of year, than when they are potted - also not true. We carry the same pricing all the way through, in some cases some of our trees and roses can be cheaper later in the potted season. All that aside, with season progressing so quickly and you haven’t yet decided what to do about planting that driveway of trees, shelter belts or a few ornamental deciduous trees, now is the time. With our mid winter sale in full swing, now is a great time to grab some bargain mop top trees, weeping flowering cherries and many other deals. Our range of bare rooted roses has expanded this season and we now have more than 900 varieties of roses, which means we would have to have the largest range of any growers in the region as well as one of the biggest in Australia. Our online presence has increased sales dramatically to the eastern States in

recent years where most of our roses have tended to go in the past via our catalogue.

This has now expanded dramatically as we are still the lowest price mail order roses supplier in Australia, with most roses at just $9.95 in the Mid Winter sale. Be quick if you are local, as we are selling out of around two to three varieties a day at present we may have to close off bare root sales early and start potting. With this in mind we are having some super savings over the next 10 days or so with huge discounts of more than 50% on selected trees, fruit trees and roses.

Excess stocks in our holding beds need to be cleared to make way for new spring stock and our advanced tree section is bursting at the seams, so now is a good time to bag a bargain. Advanced grade Golden Elms, Golden Ash, Claret Ash and plane trees are all under $27. Whether it’s miniature fruit trees at $19.95 each or ornamental pears at 25% off, or bargain standard roses at only $20.95- the list is endless and includes fruit salad trees. If you are planting fruit trees for the first time, replacing old ones or simply topping up we have an orchard starter special, with four assorted fruit trees for only $89.95. The newly released dwarf peach and nectarine trees - Anzac, Goldmine and Fantasia - have been very popular as they are well known in full sized trees. Not many people realise these actually produce as much if not more fruit than full sized trees. The new range of dwarf blood plums and apricots have certainly been a huge success again for us this season and we have managed to secure some more stocks, so if you think you missed out now is the opportunity to plant one. Four new varieties of dwarf apples have also been released this season - Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious and the ever popular Jonathan. Here, at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees we have many

differing grades of trees, with advanced fruit trees producing fruit immediately and therefore much sooner than the normal size fruit trees available at this time of year from other retailers, so look out for this option and many of these are half price in the sale.

Limestone Coast Advanced Trees also grow many varieties of magnolias which are on the cusp of budding and flowering, so now is a good time to plant. One of the most stunning would have to be Black Tulip - with its rich, velvety black- burgundy blooms, that look stunning sitting like tea cups on the bare branches. Ideal as lawn specimens.

We have dozens of other varieties also, ranging from pure whites through to pink and white two tone and rich purples. Time is ticking by for planting spring blossom trees as many are already coming in to flower, so rush in now to pick up something really stunning and see what you are buying in blossom. Mop top trees down to $59.95 and weeping cherries also must be cleared with many specials on silver birches, half price lipstick maples and even raspberry canes. The new release weeping flowering cherry Pink Snow Showers have also been a great welcome addition to the cherry family. This is a sister to the popular Snow Fountains and is a narrow growing weeping tree ideal for small gardens, courtyards and pots and is available in two heights.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Manscaping by Robbie Tansel I’m having another one of those moments where I think, “Maybe I’m the problem. Maybe I’m out of touch with the rest of the world. Maybe it’s just me.” Read this then email me at robbietansel@gmail.com and tell me if it is just me. So here’s the thing.

Manscaping. What’s up with that?

When I was a young man, learning new and interesting things at school, I got taught that the hair our body grows has a purpose and is specially designed to make sure important parts of our body work to their optimum capability. With that in mind I embraced the hair my body decided was a necessary addition over that period of my life. There were times where I questioned its necessity and what was happening to me, but never to the point where I decided to shave unusual parts of my body. Even recently when it has started sprouting in unusual locations, I’ve accepted that that is simply part of life. My mum happened to be out of prison at about the time I started growing hair on my upper lip. I’m pretty sure I didn’t even notice it there but my Mum was concerned that it might embarrass me in some way. She also discovered that one of my mates had encountered the same problem and his mother decided the best way to deal with the issue was to have it waxed at a beauty salon. My mum decided this would also be the best way of solving my problem. Needless to say 12 year old Robbie only permitted having the hair ripped from his top lip one time and not long after was bought his first razor. At no time did I become a big fan of removing

hair from my face. I don’t like shaving but understand that keeping my face somewhat neat is a necessity for a variety of reasons. I do enjoy growing beards but am not a person that thinks he should have a beard all year so it comes and goes. Luckily Donna doesn’t have a problem with me having facial hair. She’s one of these amazing people who just accept their partner for who they are (aka chick with low standards.) Anyway imagine my distress as the whole manscaping thing took off. For the uninitiated, presumably those born pre 1975, manscaping is when men have hair removed from parts of their body other than their faces or the tops of their head. Common manscaping target locations would be the chest, the back and then a variety of areas further South. The hair could be totally removed or just given a short back and sides. I’ve never had the manscaping but I’m guessing it would be advisable not to ask for a short back and sides South of the equator.

Who knows what might happen?

Manscaping took off at a time where I was still pretty much single, not by any choice I made, but seemingly by some sort of an agreement signed by every woman in the world. I knew that people I was competing with might have been smooth in places I wasn’t so neat and tidy. This left me wondering whether I might be left on the shelf due to my hairiness. Luckily again Donna didn’t have any interest in where I did and didn’t have hair. In fact she finds some hair most useful as a method for modifying any of my inappropriate behaviours. I tend to

So I feel like I dodged a bullet but I just feel sorry for all the young up and coming Robbie’s who are surely encountering more and more young ladies who are going to be expecting them to be shaved and hairless in a variety of regions.

Now before any young ladies get up in arms and start saying, “Now you can see what you’ve been putting us through for all these years” let me just suggest that it was never men driving that decision. That was only ever women being worried about what other women would think. Anyway, like I said, I just need to know if maybe this is one of those instances of me being out of touch. If you do decide to e-mail me, make sure you let me know your age so I can get my head around whether this is just some sort of generational thing.

The appointment of a new Anglican minister in Portland has had a flow-on benefit for the city’s medical services.

GP Registrar Dr Debbie Carrington has started working part-time at Active Health Portland after moving to the city with her husband Reverend Emmanuel Carrington. Dr Carrington had just started working at a practice in Melbourne after maternity leave when Reverend Carrington received the job offer in Portland. “We had been thinking of moving to the country for a long time,” she said. “I always wanted to work in a rural general practice but it never seemed to align until now. We had a look at Portland and fell in love with the place and I was able to transfer my training here.” Dr Carrington said Active Health Portland’s director of clinical services Dr Marg Garde had been a great support during the move and as a mother of two young children being able to work parttime was an additional attraction. Dr Carrington graduated with her medical degree from Melbourne University in 2008 and did her internship at Eastern Health. However, a number of rural general practice placements as a student “sold me on the idea” of moving to the country. “The breadth of what we get to do is much broader.

In Melbourne I didn’t do much procedural work as a lot could be referred straight to easily accessible specialists,” she said.“There is a lot more opportunity to manage things yourself.”

Dr Carrington is already enjoying the closer community connections in Portland. “I have found people very friendly and encouraging and quite happy that I’m here, which is nice.”

The Carringtons plan to stay in Portland for the long-term. “Often registrars don’t stay after completing their training but we plan to stay here for the remainder of my training and beyond.”

“I’ll be sticking around so the patients can get to know me and I can get to know them.”

IS THAT A FACT? The Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi is home to the Ice Hotel - a hotel made out of ice that is rebuilt every year.

More than 135 excited students and teachers from nine schools in the Mount Gambier region were awarded for completing Cows Create Careers – Farm Module last month at a ceremony at the Mount Gambier Golf Club. The presentation day recognised the nine schools from the region that had participated in the program, including Mt Gambier High School, Yahl Primary School, Compton Primary School, Kingston Community School, Allendale East Area School, Lucindale Area School, Millicent High School, Grant High School and Tenison Woods College. Cows Create Careers - Farm Module is a Dairy Australia program that aims to increase the awareness of dairy industry careers in a very hands-on way. Secondary students are educated by rearing two three-week-

old calves at school and the school is provided with dairy industry curriculum for Years 7 and 8 and Years 9 to 11, at no cost. Since 2006 Dairy Australia has worked with thousands of students, teachers, farmers, industry advocates and communities through its investment into Cows Create Careers – Farm Module. Dairy Australia’s industry capability program manager Tracy Lloyd said the program started in 2004 with dairy farmers in the Strzelecki Lions Club in Victoria and nine Gippsland schools.

With support from Dairy Australia, Regional Development Programs, dairy farmers and sponsors, the program has now grown to more than 180 schools across Australia with 8357 students completing the program last year. “Cows Create Careers – Farm Module is a program that builds awareness of dairy industry careers – from teaching students about educational and vocational pathways, to profiling the diverse range of professional careers in the dairy industry,” said Ms Lloyd. “By bringing calves into schools, students have fun learning about the different skills required in the dairy industry.” The program has gained strong support from dairy farmers and advocates across Australia. Last year alone volunteers gave 1162 hours of their

time across 22 Australian dairying regions.

The National Centre for Dairy Education Australia (NCDEA) also plays an important role by being an educational link for the schools. Locally, the project is funded by DairySA and receives additional support across the State from local companies Total Result Ag Consulting Pty Ltd, Regional Development Australia, District Council of Grant, Warrnambool Cheese & Butter, Laucke Mills, South East Vets, Provico, Genetics Australia, and Murray Goulburn. “Volunteers play a vital role in encouraging and supporting student career decision making,” Ms Lloyd said.

“The program directly benefits from the generous dedication of volunteers who have knowledge of the industry and links to education and employment sectors.”

When 60 thousand years of Yorta Yorta history reached audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide last week two Portland students were on stage to share the story. The two girls, Jerrika Pevitt and Reggina Blurton, were selected by soprano, composer and academic Deborah Cheetham’s to perform in her opera, Pecan Summer, after they participated in her singing workshops earlier this year. It was the fourth year Ms Cheetham had visited Portland to conduct the workshops as part of her Short Black Opera Program, with the children also performing a song they wrote at this year’s Reconciliation Week celebration. Pecan Summer, which will also be performed tonight and tomorrow night in Adelaide, features quite a large cast, most of them indigenous, and many of them new opera singers in the making.

As the opera entered its fourth season in 2014, it became necessary to replace some of the original children in the chorus. This provided the opportunity for Deborah to invite new and younger singers like Jerrika and Reggina to join the cast.

Although both children have already participated in several choral events in Melbourne in the last two years, working with Deborah, Jonathon Welsh and the Dhungala Children’s Choir in ‘Pecan Summer’ is expected to be a unique and memorable experience for them both. The story of ‘Pecan Summer’ is about the history-making 1939 walk-off from Cummeragunja Mission, when 200 people of the Yorta Yorta nation left their home in protest at the harsh and inhumane conditions inflicted upon them. The opera focuses on the impact this event has on Alice – a nine year old girl – whose family is her entire world.

And her world is about to be torn apart.

LOCAL Penola cookery students top the State Cafe 43 students from Penola High School participated in the State Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge which was held at Regency International College last month.

Four teams from the school entered and all were victorious, winning a bundle of medals, individual trophies and the State Shield. Teams of two students had to cook and present four serves of a main course in 60 minutes with a specific protein content. The high standard of the food reflected the time and preparation

spent by students and teachers in practising for the event. The judges were most impressed not only with the kitchen skills but also the attention to detail in the plate presentation and importantly, the taste. The Secondary Schools Challenge was organised by the Australian Culinary Federation SA Chapter. All Australian Culinary Federation Competitions follow WACS guidelines; this means all competitors start with 100 points and a gold medal. Points are deducted for incorrect skills and

The students, assisted by hospitality teacher Dee Hutchinson and mentored by Simon Bowen, of Pipers of Penola, Matt Dinnison, from Hollicks, and Ryan Dear, have been very passionate and committed in their preparation for this challenge. Workshops have taken place on a weekly basis, using lesson and lunchtime, to perfect time management, preparation, cooking techniques and knife skills.

The students had 30 minutes to set up prior to the competition starting, and 30 minutes to clean up after the competition and had to use chicken supreme as the main component of their dish. The breast fillet was on the bone and had to be trimmed and portioned within the allotted competition time. The dish had to contain an appropriate starch, vegetable and garnish, of their choice.

Each team had to be responsible for providing all ingredients needed to create their dish. No prior preparation of these ingredients was to be done and nothing to be pre-prepared.

Wehn the winning school for the Australian Culinary Federation Shield was announced, Penola High reigned supreme. The gold medal and championship winning team of Hannah Klemm and Montana Freeman now represent Penola High School as part of the Australian Team entering the International secondary Schools Culinary Challenge which is being held at Southland Boys’ High School, Invercargill, in New Zealand.

The criteria for the International Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge has been announced and the girls have already working towards that event. The girls winning dish consisted of pan fried chicken breast fillet with chicken sausage, carrot and potato brunoise and seared pak choy with white wine and mustard sauce. “This is another great success story for our Hospitality program,” school princpal

Residents in the Greater Hamilton area are being notified of changes to TV station frequencies that mean they will need to retune their digital television, set-top box or digital recorder on July 17. Southern Cross Ten will change frequencies on July 17 to free up broadcasting spectrum for new services such as mobile broadband.

After the channel change, viewers in Greater Hamilton will need to retune their TV or device in order to find the station again.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Cr Albert Calvano said the Federal Government’s Department of Communications had notified the Council about the change.

Cr Calvano said there may be some temporary outages to all TV channels in the days leading up to, on the day of and a day or two after the retune date.

“These outages are unavoidable as there will be necessary engineering work being undertaken at the Mt Dundas TV transmission tower,” he said.

“The government has assured us that any outages are unlikely to last more than a few hours.”

The Department of Communications said some people within the Greater Hamilton region would have a different retune date because the area is serviced by a number of TV towers. Visit www.digitalready. gov.au/retune and enter your address to find out more. The Department advises residents to wait until at least 5am on July 17 to retune their digital TV equipment.

She is not blessed with great height, she is not blessed with great speed and she does not dazzle with a highlight reel of incredible athletic feats but what Alisha Bryan does on a netball court is what every coach wants from every player – she always plays to a high level and she is incredibly consistent. With her distinctive step back on one leg for every shot, Bryan troubles every opponent and baffles every opposition coach. She is a no-fuss player with a poker face, who, as time has gone on over her long career, appears to have no weakness. She has perfected the art of positioning in the shooting circle and her accuracy means she is a constant threat. Bryan has never received the accolades of a Lisa Cram, Michelle Hosking or Lauren Hockley but you ask any coach or opposition circle defender and she is as damaging as any goaler that has played in the competition in the past two decades. Her talent has always been evident since debuting in the 17 & under competition in 1997. She played in that grade for four seasons, finishing runner-up best and fairest at club level this first two seasons and then winning the top honour in 1999. In 2000, her final year at junior level, she represented Western Border in the 17 & under team, making her official A grade debut in 2001, despite having already played a number of games in the top senior grade, along with talented teenage team mate Natasha Hunter (now Silvy). It was in 2001 that Bryan was named in the Western Border team of the year and was joint runner-up in the club best and fairest. It was in her third season of A grade that she experienced the ultimate success with the 2003 A grade premiership. Bryan then played A reserve the following two seasons before spending some time at Mid South East netball club Port MacDonnell. Her return to North Gambier in 2009 saw her return to the top senior grade and she won the club’s best and fairest title in that return season. Having a family might have slowed down her progress to the 200 game mark but certainly had no effect on her form and in 2012, she was the club runner-up best and fairest. This season she is back in A Reserve and a check of the best players for the first 10 rounds, shows she has rarely been out of the Tigers’ best. She has also filled in a number of times for the A grade line-up and also secured best player accolades in the top grade but is set to finish the season with the currently top ranked North Gambier A Reserve.

Star Roo reaches 250 milestone

Third time lucky

For the third successive year, Murray South East made the title decider at the South Australian Country Football Championships but this year, the script finally went their way, taking the title with a 30 point win over Eastern. Leading by seven points at half time, the clash was evenly poised but the Murray South East combination came out after half time with a steely determination and piled on seven goals to one to enjoy a seven goal three quarter time advantage. Eastern did respond in the last but it was too far back, and with many of the players having been part of the previous two losses, there was no way Murray South East was letting this title slip. Murray South East team mates Liam O’Neil (Ramblers) and Penola’s Ben McIntyre shared the Don McSweeny Medal for player of the championship and six of the championship winning team were included in the team of the carnival - a 25 man squad which takes on a city combination in April next year. McIntyre was named on the half forward flank and South Gambier’s Simon Berkefeld was named on the interchange bench, with the remaining four players hailing from the River Murray Football League • Above - Title winning team. When the name Cram is brought up in netballing circles, twin sisters Amy and Lisa Cram are always inextricably linked. Since their junior days, the duo has been the backbone of any West Gambier success – Amy controlling the defensive end and Lisa taking care of shooting duties. Even now, more than 15 years on from their netball debut, the sisters are seen as the two pillars around which West Gambier, currently second on the A Grade premiership ladder, will build a challenge to undefeated reigning premiers Millicent. But last round, when the Roos secured a come from behind victory over South Gambier, it was all about Lisa – the star goaler clocking up her 250th game for the West Gambier Netball Club and as always, she was a key part of the final result. While shooting partner Kahli Rolton did the majority of the scoreboard damage, Lisa was the architect of every offensive foray, working hard outside the circle, while still converting her share of the scoring opportunities. The second quarter epitomised her career. With her team unexpectedly trailing by six goals at the first change, the competitive goaler stepped her game up considerably, shooting 10 from 13 in a quarter where the Roos clawed their way back to be down by only two at the main break. When the game could have slipped from her team’s grasp – Lisa Cram took matters into her own hand to ensure that did not happen. Her career started as a 10 year old and from 2001 to 2005 she represented Western Border at all junior age groups, stepping straight into the open team in 2006, as soon as she was no longer eligible for junior competition.

During her stunning junior career, she also represented the South East region in 2004 and 2005 and was named in the top 10 players at the now William Loud Championships in 2005. That was a huge year for the talented goaler, who made her A grade debut, won her club’s A grade and 17 & under best and fairest accolades, finished runner-up at association level in the 17 & under grade and secured a South Australian Sports Institute Country Scholarship. In 2007, she moved to Adelaide and when she returned to her hometown as a police officer, she spent some time at the Port MacDonnell Netball Club, where she was a two-time premiership player. But in 2012, the lure of her home club saw her return and with that the fortunes of the then-flailing A grade side also rose. She was runner-up in the club best and fairest in that year, winning it in 2013 – the same year she was third in the association award and was named in the team of the year.

The value of Lisa Cram is two fold – she has the ability to play a strong holding game and provide dangerous near the post, but is also a stellar long range shooter. She is also the chief architect for the Roos forward line, directing her team mates and working as an extra feeder when needed. She is the kind of player, opposition coaches don’t plan to stop, in a similar vein to Donna Denton, but simply look to minimise the damage they inflict. Some players are so influential and set such a high standard that they are rarely, if ever, beaten. And Lisa is not just a star player, she is also a hard working club person and this season she has taken that dedication to a whole new level. She coaches the 15 & 17 & under teams and is also the club records officer.

Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association had another break from Mount Gambier Community RSL premiership season to hold its fourth association championship. This championship was the Faith Jewellers / David Peacock Carpentry Mixed Pairs.

With numbers a little lower than previous years with 22 entries it was going to be a night of high standards and an earlier finishing night.

The pair from RSL & District Bob Milligan as the skipper and his wife Kath as his lead, met the inform duo of Andy Cornolo, skippering and his lead Lina Cornolo from the Kongorong team in the first semi-final, with Milligan’s team winning 6 shots to 3. In the second semi-final the Saint Martin’s husband and wife combination of Barry Ellis, skippering and Leanne Ellis defeated Craig Pearson and Lorraine VanDenHoogen from Post-Tel 10 shots to 5. Ellis and Milligan met in the final, both teams playing exceptionally well and both deserved to make the final. In the final both teams were tied on the

third end, but Bobs team had a two shot lead by the fifth end. Then on the sixth end the Ellis team claimed five shots and then things changed with Barry and Leanne scoring another four shots on the last end allowing Barry & Leanne to take out the 2014 Faith Jewellers / David Peacock Carpentry Mixed Pairs Championship 11 shots to 4.

The consolation semi-finals were contested between Tim Wrightson from RSL & District and Lynda Kember from Post-Tel defeat Jim Simpson and Keisha Pearson from Post-Tel 5 shots to 4 and the second semi final saw Ron Cook and Di Adams from RSL & District defeat Jim and Colleen Pearson from PostTel 11 shots to 7. Ron and Di beat Tim and Lynda in the final of the consolation to win 12 shots to 6.

LOCAL Foreshore plans start to take shape Stronger connections from the Bridgewater Bay Foreshore Reserve to the beach, as well as links to facilities and the surrounding areas, is one of the key strategies expected to be included in the Bridgewater Foreshore Master Plan. The idea was just one of the opportunities presented at Tuesday’s June Council Meeting as part of the ‘Issues and Opportunities Discussion Paper’, prepared to provide feedback to stakeholders following a public consultation session earlier this year. This paper will be used in the development of the ‘initial concept’ Bridgewater Foreshore Master Plan, and eventually the final Bridgewater Foreshore Master Plan, to provide direction on the development of the Bridgewater foreshore area.

Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr John Northcott said this was an exciting project in the development of the Shire’s tourism industry. “The beach is a popular destination for a range of users who require access to the beach,” he said. “However, there are limited formal paths and visitors tend to access the beach directly from the nearest point.

“The beach steps are not frequently used due to their design and functionality “This has resulted in a plethora of paths leading to the beach that has contributed to dune instability and foreshore erosion.

“In the absence of a foreshore promenade pedestrians move in-between cars which creates potential conflict between cars and pedestrians. “ Cr Northcott said the lack of green spaces and day visitor facilities was also highlighted in the discussion paper. “Aboriginal themes could be interwoven into the development of the plan.”

The Mount Gambier Toy Library has welcomed 15 Reception to Year 5 students from the Poplars Inclusive Education section at Tenison Woods College, as members this term. The children have enjoyed borrowing and returning one toy each per week, out of the toy library’s extensive collection of 600 fun and educational toys available for loan. The toy library is located at the John Frew Centre, Frew Park, and is open to the public on Mondays from 9.30-11.30 a.m. and Saturdays from 10.00–11.30 a.m. The toy library will be open on Saturdays only during the school holidays. The Poplars Inclusive Education section provides for students with more significant needs requiring a more modified program. Poplars inclusive education teacher Jeannie Gryn said the students thoroughly enjoyed their weekly visits to the toy library. “Our curriculum is heavily play-based so we originally joined the toy library to access a wider variety of toys,” Ms Gryn said. “There is a great range of toys, each week the students find something new. Many valuable social skills, including how to take turns, are learnt through play during the week. We are very grateful to the toy library for being so accommodating and welcoming to our students. We enjoy travelling back to school with our bus full of new toys to play with and explore.” Toy Library president Jennifer Peterson said the Poplars children were very enthusiastic borrowers, and the toy library was keen to ensure they continued enjoying their experience.

Membership fees start at $2.50 per child per term for concession memberships, which enable each child to borrow two toys and one puzzle or game for a maximum of two weeks.

The standard fee is $16.50 per term for one child, and $9 per term for each subsequent child, with a discounted membership available to volunteers.

Prices for group memberships are available on request. There are many great reasons to join the toy library.

“The toy library has a wide variety of large and small toys to stimulate children at play, including ride-on toys, climbing frames, puzzles, logic games, educational toys, kitchens, large train sets, toys for babies and water play sets,” Ms Peterson said. “When your child stops playing with the toys you can return them to the toy library and borrow new ones, saving money and toy clutter at home, and providing your child with the opportunity to play with a varied and stimulating range of toys and resources.” The toy library now also has party packs available, which consist of child-sized tables and chairs and a variety of games, to make your next children’s party a memorable one.
