COVER Cyber safety in the spotlight Cyber safety, ‘sexts’, cyber bullying, and online predators; do you know enough to protect yourself or your children? Many of us use the technology but are still in the dark as to the best ways to do so without compromising personal safety. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, coach, or teacher you should be aware of the destructive impacts and possible fallouts and how to handle these situations in order to protect young people. Cyber Safety Awareness presentations and workshops will be held in the Limestone Coast from August 11-15.

The Limestone Coast Drug Action Team and the District Council of Grant acquired funding from the SA Government Attorney Generals Department’s Crime Prevention & Community Safety Grants Program, and with the assistance of local schools and councils, AC Care and the Quality Inn Presidential, it is anticipated that more than 1,500 senior school and Year 7 students will attend these workshops. Just as important are the free sessions for caregivers which will be run in Mount Gambier, Port MacDonnell, Millicent and Naracoorte (see sidebar for session times), and a free workshop for professionals who deal with groups of young people on Friday August 15 in Mount Gambier. The Lower South East Hockey Association continues to develop strong junior players with three of its youngsters set to represent South Australia at upcoming national championships.Georgia Clarke and Alex Signorelli-Clark will be the first to suit up in the tri-colours as both enjoy thier first taste of State representation at the beginning of next month as part of the 2014 SAPSASA under 12 teams heading to Tasmania for the national championships. With record numbers of entries from primary school students travelling to Adelaide to trial for the 2014 16 player squads, saw both Georgia and Alex impressed the selectors with their outstanding training application. The four days of competition will be held at Tasmania’s State Hockey Centre and is a great opportunity for both Georgia and Alex to compete against the best players and teams with Australia. It is also exciting times for 15 year old Grant High school student Laura Edmonds as she prepares to compete against all of the

other States of Australia in the upcoming Australian Under 16 Secondary School Girls Hockey Championships, which will be held in Adelaide, at the end of August.

With the trials for selection taking place in June at the State Hockey Centre, Laura impressed all the selectors at both trainings sessions by displaying her outstanding skills and was one of only two regionally based girls selected in a 16 named women’s squad. According to the LSEHA Junior Development Officer in Mike Armour, Laura has developed strongly into a very talented hockey player and is a player who will thrive and enjoy the opportunity of competing at such an elite level. Laura along with her South Australian teammates will have the opportunity to impress the National junior selectors that will be in attendance to uncover the talents that are on display at the Australian Hockey Championships.

LOCAL When the Get Active - Glenelg2Grampians (G2G) initiative wrapped up in May, 82 programs had been delivered, 622 participants had been involved in physical activity programs, 404 participants in healthy eating programs, and 2621 directly engaged at events. But despite the end of the program being reached, it seems that the community will continue to learn from the healthy messages the program initiated.

The external evaluation of the three year G2G program, undertaken by Flinders University earlier this year, determined the project’s effectiveness in building community capacity to facilitate increased healthy eating and physical activity within Glenelg and Southern Grampians Shires. As part of the evaluation, project partners and program participants were invited to provide their community perspectives through focus groups, surveys and interviews.

Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr John Northcott said the majority of survey respondents felt that G2G had increased community awareness of the importance of healthy physical activity and healthy eating. “About 70 per cent of respondents believed that the activities improved healthy eating habits and increased physical activity in the participating groups and more than half felt the initiative had increased their ability to deliver healthy lifestyle programs in the community,” he said.

“As well as programs that encouraged individuals to participate, G2G also involved activities that would embed healthy practices long-term, for example the councils and some clubs have now adopted healthy options catering policies.

“Get Active Glenelg2Grampians was found to be a positive initiative overall that, among other things, led to ‘ripple effects’ and ‘spin-offs’ that will continue beyond the project.” There have been a number of ongoing projects initiated

by G2G, which continue to benefit the community. One of these is a selection of “Move it or Lose it” DVDs, purchased to increase participation in physical activity and available for loan in every library across Glenelg and Southern Grampians for private and professional use. A variety of newly installed fitness equipment, next to Fawthrop Lagoon in Portland and at the Merino Lions Park, is free for daily use by the community.

Twelve clients of STAY Residential Services wished they could have stayed just a little bit longer on a school holiday respite trip to the Victorian snow fields. The 12 teenagers and nine staff and volunteers were treated to a healthy drop of fresh snow during the tour which was the biggest respite trip ever undertaken by STAY. STAY obtained funding for the bus trip through the Herbert Allen Bequest. CEO Maree Sandford said it had been planned for almost 12 months.

“Everyone had a ball. A blanket of beautiful fresh snow greeted them and continued falling. By the afternoon the low lying cloud lifted and a spectacular view of the mountain and the more challenging toboggan run could be seen,” she said. The more adventurous headed up to tackle the speed of the toboggan run, while others added some finishing touches to a couple of impressive looking snowmen. The trip was led by specialist volunteer Chris Sharples from Daktari Sport and Monivae College student Annie Elliott also volunteered to help the staff and clients. “They wouldn’t have been able to

have such a fantastic without the knowledge and experience of Chris Sharples who led the way and had great interaction with the children,” Ms Sandford said. Respite home supervisor Leonie Schurmann said the clients were thrilled by the trip. “There were lots of oohs and aahs and the smiles on their faces were just magical,” she said. “They laughed and participated the whole time.” Having an experience snow tour leader was the key to a successful trip. “Chris was able to take us to Mount Buffalo where there was good snow.

Everyone loved it and if we could get more funding we’d love to take another group and give the residents a chance to try skiing.” STAY supports 16 people with a disability who live in STAY residential homes, provides respite for 47 people and supports other people with disabilities in the community. LOCAL Worth the wait Anyone who knew Gina Raisin when she was a teenager wouldn’t be surprised to see a story about her artistic pursuits. It was her passion at high school and she was set to pursue a career in fine arts, being accepted to a university course in Melbourne. But financially, tertiary education and moving so far from home just wasn’t an option and so the paintbrushes were all but packed away. So, while the story of Gina, the painter, started almost four decades ago, it really only took flight in the past 12 months. It has been a whirlwind since but no one could be more thrilled that she has returned to her first love than Gina herself, setting aside two days a week in the studio. Juggling a new marriage, her job as a partnership broker and taking care

of her aging mother, Gina has still managed to put together her first solo exhibition for South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Week in August.

Once further study had been shelved, Gina took up a position as a copywriter at Radio 5SE. “I basically fell into that first job,” she said. “I didn’t even really know what a copywriter was.”

Her first foray into the media world came as a result of her entering a poetry competition.

“When I started I couldn’t even type – I never did that at school,” Gina said. But when she did learn about typing and writing, it was from one of the best – the late Hedley Hancock, an icon in the South East media landscape.

The attraction to copywriting and the media was at least it was still a creative career. “I always had that creative bent so I guess that’s why it was a good fit in the end.” Gina said. As were all the roles that came after her apprenticeship at the local radio station. She worked as a producer at Adelaide’s 5DN and then at NWS9 where she worked in the production department on everything from Here’s Humphrey to the Grand Prix. Gina also did freelance work, working alongside Gabrielle Kelly making documentaries for the BBC in the early 90s.

“We actually did a documentary on climate change well before it was even sexy,” she said.

Gina also enjoyed stints at the ABC, again in production, working on shows like Couch Potato and again dabbling across the full spectrum including sport. Then came the amazing opportunity to work with respected Australian film maker Rolf de Heer – Gina was a producer on his acclaimed movie Bad Boy Bubby. Not that all her ventures were that successful. “I did work on the Paul Crux film Lust & Revenge,” she said. “It was in cinemas for about five minutes – it was a lemon.” With a wealth of experience under her belt, Gina decided to return home and so she made her home at Port MacDonnell.

“My initial thoughts were to get a job at Channel 8 but that didn’t pan out,” she said. “So I set up my own business and worked freelance for a few years.” Then came the council years, as she took on the role of community services manager. “Being a new role it was a blank canvas,” Gina said. “I was interested in arts and young people and I was able to develop a lot of projects around those two things.” Her desire to still be creative gave rise to some memorable projects, including the Memories in Suitcase – the migrant focussed sculpture that was borne out of the stories of the wide variety of migrants in this region. “It gave me the opportunity to work with Silvio Apponyi and that was amazing,” Gina said. She was also a driving force behind the Limestone Sculpture Symposium, even flexing those long buried artistic muscles by

participating herself. “Then there was the film festivals and all the youth week activities and things I really loved,” she said. Not that she had completely avoided art since her teenage years. “When I was single and living in Adelaide I did some painting on silk,” Gina said. “One of the really lovely things was when I went back to Adelaide for the 50th anniversary at Channel Nine, someone there said they still had a piece of mine hanging on their wall.”

Mary Mackillop Feast Day - St Joseph’s Church and Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre, Penola - August 8 Come to the Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop Feast day where there will be a Mass in St Joseph’s Church, followed by refreshments at the Mary MacKillop Centre, Saint Mary of the Cross will be celebrated all day for those who would like to attend.

It was in Penola in 1866 that Mary MacKillop, an outstanding young teacher, and Julian Tenison Woods, a priest and brilliant scientist, founded the uniquely Australian Sisters of St Joseph.. The feast day is commemorated on the date of her death which was on August 8, 1909. She died in Sydney aged 67 years. She was canonised a Saint of the Catholic Church on October

LOCAL Council has endorsed the final plan needed to transform the $700,000 Youth Activity Skate Space from concept to reality.

The ‘Youth Activity Skate Space Transition Plan’ was adopted at the July Council Meeting after the project received $300,000 in funding from the State Government at the start of July. Council also committed $100,000 towards the project in its 2014-15 Budget, and is waiting on final confirmation of an additional $300,000 from other sources.

The transition plan outlines the process, responsibilities, resources, risks and overall plan to deliver this major council project. The multipurpose all-ages space will allow for a wide variety of community activities and events, and encourage opportunities for participation and physical activity. It will incorporate skateable surfaces and address the existing need to redevelop the current aging skate park and eliminate the costly ongoing maintenance costs associated with it. Mayor Cr John Northcott said Council was committed to a thriving economy, full of opportunities and resilience and that it was building Portland Bay and the foreshore as an economic attractor.

“Council’s Recreation and Open Space Strategy identified the need to upgrade the skate park and BBQ/picnic facilities throughout the Shire and it indicated that any new developments or upgrades should consider opportunities for informal community activities,” he said. “The strategy also stated that Glenelg Shire has a lower physical activity rate than the Victorian average and that physical activity of all kinds should be promoted, supported and encouraged.

“There is further support for this project within the Municipal Health and Wellbeing Plan and the more recent draft Public Arts Master Plan.

“Finally, but certainly far from the least important factor, Council has a legal obligation to maintain the Portland Skate Park to a standard to ensure the facility is safe and continues to be fit for use.” Expressions of Interest to undertake the design refinement and construction drawing component are currently being sought in line with Council’s Procurement Policy.

LOCAL Hall of famer heading to Tigerland

On Tuesday, August 5, North Gambier Football Club has been given one night with Anthony Koutoufides, where he will be able to share with the North Gambier footballers his knowledge of football. On the night he will be taking a football training, starting off with a clinic with the 13s, 15s and 17s teams. After he will then help two time, back to back Western Border premiership coach Justin McConnell by sharing the ways he improved his football during his great AFL career. It ios hoped this will also help motivate the A and B graders coming into finals.Koutoufides is a great former Australian Rules footballer for the Carlton football club and is respected all along the football community, having recently been inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame. Koutoufides played from 1992 to 2007, kicking 226 goals and also winning the 1995 premiership, as well as three pre season premierships in 1995, 2005 and 2007. Beside his premierships he has had many other achievements, including the Leigh Matthews Trophy in 2001, the club’s leading goal kicker in 1997.

Koutoufides also captained the Carlton

squad from 2004 till 2006. At the age of 17, Koutoufides was scouted by Carlton from the Lalor football club and play 50 games in reserves and also won the 1991 best and fairest. He then began his AFL career in 1992 and presented himself a one to watch for the future of Carlton. He was a strong mark and also a great kick. Koutoufides was also a great athlete winning the state under 16 high jump and also was in the 110 metre hurdle and the discus but he made the choice to switch from his athletics to then go on and stick with football. Koutoufides is a great inspiration to young footballers and athletes around Australia. Tony Kelly the president of North Gambier football club has invited any in the community who would like to hear him talk about his football career and also about the life of an AFL footballer to the 7pm function. Mount Gambier residents are being urged to apply for AMP’s new $1 million fund to support talented Australians. Sixty percent of Australians say money is a reason they have not pursued an individual talent or dream, according to a survey by AMP and Newspoll. That finding comes as AMP launched AMP’s Tomorrow Fund, an initiative that will give away up to $1 million a year to promote and nurture clever Australians from all walks of life to pursue an individual goal that makes a positive contribution to Australian society. Mount Gambier based AMP financial adviser Rob Johncock, of JND Financial Solutions, is urging Mount Gambier residents with a talent or a dream to think about applying for a Tomorrow Fund grant. “Don’t let money be an obstacle if you have a talent that will make a difference,” he said. “I know we have a lot of talented people in the Mount Gambier area.

“AMP’s Tomorrow Fund is open to Australians of all ages from all walks of life who are working towards a goal or dream and need some financial help to get there.

“Whether it is something creative, academic or an obscure invention, now is

All newborns born at PDH will receive the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL) welcome book, Where is the green sheep? by Mem Fox. Once signed up these babies will then go on to receive a free age-appropriate book each month until they turn five. LOCAL Uniting Church Camp Road, Allestree will be renamed Huxley Road, in recognition of one of the original land owners from the eighteen hundreds, T Huxley. The motion was moved at the July Council Meeting after community concern was raised over the length and irrelevance of the former name.

The Uniting Church Camp Road, Allestree, was locally named after the Uniting Church in Australia Conference Centre located at the end of the road. The Conference Centre has been sold privately and is now known as Portland Bay Lodge. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr John Northcott said all adjoining property owners along the road were invited to provide written comment on one of a number of proposed names or to submit an alternative road name suggestion.

“We were open to consider any road name suggested in submissions received that complied with the Victorian Government “Guidelines for Geographic Names 2010 (version2)” for naming road,” he said.

“The property owners suggested “Bay Road” or “Camp Road” to rename the road but these road names were ineligible as they conflicted with other road names in the Shire and therefore did not comply with the Victorian Guidelines for Geographic Names 2010 (version2) and the Council’s Road and Street Naming and Numbering Policy.”

The close date for submissions was May 30.

The Department of Geographic Place Names and adjoining land owners will now be notified of the change.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY Tales from the dark ages by Robbie Tansel I have a confession to make. I have an iPhone 3. I know what you’re thinking. If you were born before 1976 you’re thinking, “Wow, Robbie. You must be some sort of tech wizard. How do you wrap your brain around such a hi-tech apparatus.” Or words to that effect.

If you’ve been born since 1976 you’re thinking, “Wow, Robbie. Do you use it to call the operator and get them to pull a cord out of the wall and plug it into the socket of the person you want to talk to? No doubt you only use it when the dial phone which is attached to your wall is being used by one of the other people who live in your little house on the prairie. Just be careful that your pet dinosaur doesn’t sit on it.” That’s what I hate about the younger generations. They’re so sarcastic and really have a particularly nasty streak. I will admit that my phone is a little outdated. I’ve had it for an unprecedented amount of time: three and a half years. That’s right, my original plan ran out and even though I could have gone down to my local phone shop and got a new handset with a new plan, I’ve stuck by the old girl. While I’m in a confessional mood, I might as well tell you everything. I have hoarding tendencies and am also quite reluctant to change. Both of these tendencies are part of my phone issues. In my defence I’m actually not completely clueless when it comes to technology. I’m simply of

the opinion that my phone currently does everything that I need it to do. I can make and receive phone calls;I can text (or sext in a massive 3.2 megapixels); I can check the weather on my wonderful Bureau of Meteorology app; and I can even check the footy scores over the weekend. So why buy a new phone?

It is not a financial issue at all. I’m not a wealthy man but I could go buy myself a new phone if I wanted. I just don’t feel the need. I know I’m a bit old fashioned. I also have three giant big box televisions for exactly the same reason. They’re still performing the task they were built for. I am convinced that I will not enjoy any of my favourite television shows any more than I currently do on a bigger screen or a thinner device. The footy won’t be any more interesting (in fact I’m pretty sure High Definition will actually make watching North Melbourne matches even more difficult to stomach). Hamish and Andy won’t be any funnier. At some point my phone will stop performing its duties and at that time I will jump in my car with the cut out panel in the floor and run it down to my nearest phone shop. Yabba dabba doooo! SALA is an innovative open access visual arts festival presenting thousands of artists through unique collaborations and exhibitions in hundreds of spaces throughout metropolitan and regional South Australia.

Local artist, Tanja HasanWarner, has chosen the Mount Gambier Library as a venue to display her work “A Home for Lost Birds”, an exhibition of paintings, drawings and prints, exploring ideas of home and belonging.

Tanja’s artistic flair is built on her qualifications in the Visual Arts, and she has been actively contributing and promoting the arts sector across the Lower South East and Limestone Coast Regions, as well as participating in exhibitions across the Eyre Peninsula regions and Adelaide. “In my work I explore concepts of home, migration and belonging. I enjoy creating imagery reminiscent of children’s book illustrations and combine this with postal and travel iconography to create a narrative,” Tanja said. “My work is greatly influenced by personal experiences of migration and my Yugoslav heritage. “I combine this with stories of displacement, experienced by people and birds alike.

Birds play an important role as both metaphors and story tellers. They help to create important links.”

The official opening of “A Home for Lost Birds” will be held Saturday,August 2 at 12 noon at the Mount Gambier Library. The invitation is extended to the public with the exhibition on display until Thursday, August 14. Almost 50 Portland community leaders, representing local business, schools, kindergartens, clubs, community organisations, Council and State Government departments, have thrown their weight behind a new World Health Organisation (WHO) supported initiative to fight obesity. After being selected as the trial location for the project, the Portland group joined with Co-Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention at Deakin University, Dr Steven Allender, and other industry experts, last Thursday (17 July) to learn about the project concepts. Dr Allender, who is also Professor in Public Health at Deakin University, is focused on long term change for Portland, with the new process about understanding the complexity of the obesity problem and empowering community champions to make long term changes in the way they support the community. The Portland project has been titled SEA Change, or Sustainable Eating and Activity Change.

Targeted at Portland children, local leaders have now developed a model that describes the factors that lead to obesity, in the Portland context, and how some factors relate to others in influencing healthy eating and physical activity.

Portland District Health Promotion Officer Phoebe Nagorcka-Smith said this process not only explored the complexity of the issue, but also guided the group in acknowledging that there is no one solution. “A whole of community response is needed to tackle the problem and there needs to be a constant and rapid feedback loop,” she said.

“This feedback is an essential component to the process so that the project team can understand what is working in a short period of time and therefore momentum can continue.”

From this model, action ideas have been developed and prioritised and will form the starting point for the follow up workshop to be held on July 29. “At this second workshop, community leaders will hear more about best practice in the area, and then use this information and their own ideas to further refine and detail the action ideas and their commitment to implement them,” Ms Nagorcka-Smith “In many cases, these action ideas will be focussing on changing the way we do things to make it easy for the community to make healthy choices.” From this second workshop an action plan will be developed and agreed action implemented by participants.

Caffeine and alcohol: Many experts believe that too much caffeine and/or alcohol can trigger eye twitching. If your caffeine and/or alcohol intake has increased, cutting back is worth a try.

Dry eyes: More than half of the older population experiences dry eyes, due to aging. Dry eyes also are very common for people who use computers, take certain medications (antihistamines, antidepressants, etc.), wear contact lenses and consume caffeine and/or alcohol.

Nutritional imbalances: Some reports indicate a lack of certain nutritional substances, such as magnesium, can trigger eyelid spasms. Although these reports lack scientific evidence, they cannot be rule out as a possible cause of eye twitching.

Allergies: People with eye allergies can have itching, swelling and watery eyes.

When eyes are rubbed, this releases histamine into the lid tissues and the tears which can cause eyelid twitching.

To offset this problem, some optometrists have recommended antihistamine eye drops or tablets to help some eyelid twitches. But remember that antihistamines also can cause dry eyes. It’s best to work with your optometrist to make sure you’re doing the right thing for your eyes.

Eye twitching, eyelid tics and spasms are pretty common. Usually only the bottom lid of one eye is involved, but the top eyelid also can twitch. Most eye twitches come and go, although they can last for weeks or even months. To find a solution for eye twitching, we needed to determine the underlying cause of this annoying problem. Called myokymia, these rippling muscle contractions in an eyelid can be triggered by: • Stress • Tiredness • Eye strain • Caffeine • Alcohol • Dry eyes • Nutritional imbalances • Allergies Almost all sudden-onset eyelid twitching is benign, meaning the condition is not serious or a sign of a medical problem.

However, this kind of eye twitching also can be hard to treat. The only option for making the twitching stop may be to figure out the cause and deal with it.

More serious forms of eyelid twitching are caused by neurological conditions such as blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm. These conditions are much less common and should be properly diagnosed and referred to an eye specialist for further treatment.

Stress: While we’re all under stress at times, our bodies react in different ways.

Eye twitching can be one sign of stress, especially when it is related to vision problems such as eye strain. Reducing the cause of the stress can help make the twitching stop.

Brittany completed her secondary education at Mount Gambier High School and is now studying at Deakin University, based at Geelong. Brittany is currently in her third year of a four year course - Bachelor of Psychology. After completing this degree, she wishes to return to Mount Gambier and work in the field before deciding if she will concentrate on completing a two year Masters degree. LOCAL South Australian hay growers are being urged to increase their production and change their bale size to meet growing national demand. Leading Australian hay trader, Feed Central, consistently buys hay out of South Australia for the domestic market, sending it to almost every mainland state and territory. Feed Central Managing Director Tim Ford said he believed demand would increase over coming years from a combination of South Australian buyers and buyers from other states.

However, South Australian producers need to produce more and adjust their bale weight and sizes to maximise their return.

“Bale size, weight and road restrictions from South Australia are close to horrific,” Mr Ford said.

“Currently South Australian hay is made in 8x4x4 bales and they weigh light which means freight is expensive.

It is increasingly imperative to bale 8x4x3 as the 8x4x4 bales are often unviable to shift.” Mr Ford said the current size has to be repressed by exporters.

“Producing high density bales will dramatically improve market reach.

Investment in new high density balers will also improve on-farm storage and handling efficiencies,” he said. Mr Ford said the domestic market required all types of hay including lucerne, clover, pastures, oaten wheat, barley, rye, pea, and vetch. Domestic customers take a variety of grades but Mr Ford said producers should aim for the best quality “because this will always sell the fastest and at the highest price”. Generally domestic moisture is about 18 per cent but producers should aim for export moisture on oaten hay. Mr Ford said Australian hay growers needed to produce more hay to cover winter shortages. “The domestic and export markets have grown but production hasn’t changed,” he said.

Feed Central also takes listings of hay for sale and offers this service to buyers locally and nationally.

“Under our system we like to inspect and feed test the hay ourselves; but let the grower nominate the price,” Mr Ford said. Feed Central guarantees the payment to the grower.

Feed Central has developed an Australian-first app to give haymaking contractors and regular hay growers the ability to assess the quality of their product.

The Wonky Donkey is a very funny, cumulative song, and each page tells us something new about the donkey until we end up with a spunky, hanky-panky, cranky stinky, lanky, honkeytonkey, winky wonky donkey.

Released in 2007 as a song, along with other children’s songs in an album called “Not Just for Kids”, The Wonky Donkey won the APRA NZ Children’s song of the year award in 2008 and ended up making top 25 songs in the children’s section of International Songwriting Contest, one of the world’s biggest song competitons.

Drug and alcohol services across south-west Victoria are being streamlined in a major reform of the sector. As part of the new arrangement, the newly formed Great South Coast Drug and Alcohol Treatment Services consortium will provide counselling, care and recovery, and non-residential withdrawal services. The Western Region Alcohol and Drug Centre (WRAD) is the lead agency in the consortium which also includes Portland District Health (Glenelg Southern Grampians Drug Treatment Services), South West Healthcare, Great South Coast Medicare Local, and Brophy Family and Youth Services. It is the first time the agencies have pooled their resources and experience to provide services in the region.

Services will be delivered in Warrnambool, Portland and Hamilton and surrounding regions.

A new intake and assessment service will also be established as part of the changes. It will be delivered by the Australian Community Support Organisation (ACSO) which will refer people to relevant local treatment providers.

ASCO is expected to have a base in Warrnambool as part of the new arrangements. The Great South Coast Medicare Local will undertake a planning function for the new consortium to identify service gaps and communicate needs to the Department of Health. RAA Senior Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain said there are many laws and common guidelines on when to use the appropriate lights during dark, rainy and foggy conditions. “Our road rules state that a driver mustn’t drive at night or in hazardous weather conditions such as fog unless their headlights, tail lights and number plate light are all working,” said Mr Mountain. “Dark, rainy or foggy weather conditions can be quite common at this time of year, so it’s important to drive with caution.

“Pedestrians and cyclists can be particularly harder to detect and wet roads means it also takes a longer distance to stop.

“In foggy conditions, turn your headlights on low beam or use fog lights if you have them. Don’t put headlights on high beam though, as the reflection from the fog actually makes it harder to see.”

Mr Mountain reminds motorists that you can only use your fog lights when you are experiencing the appropriate conditions.

In other periods of low visibility, headlights should be used instead.

“The law states that the driver of a vehicle fitted with front or rear fog lights must only operate them if they are driving in fog or other hazardous weather conditions causing reduced visibility,” said Mr Mountain. Headlights should also be used on low beam during darker mornings, days and evenings, and during rain. Daytime running lights (DRL) is a term that is becoming a lot more common and this feature can be found in many new vehicles as standard equipment. “The modern daytime running lights are Light Emitting Diodes (LED) which operate whenever the engine is running. They have a low energy consumption and are designed to minimise glare,” said Mr Mountain.“DRL’s can make your vehicle more visible to approaching motorists and pedestrians.

“Driving with headlights on at all times also increases vehicle visibility, but it does increase fuel consumption and reduces headlight life.”

MOTOR Rhodes completes a hat trick of wins at Limestone Coast Off Road Masters

Jack Rhodes and David Pullino have completed the proverbial impossible dream, winning three events in four weeks in Australian off road racing.

Their hat trick run started four weeks ago at the Toyo Tires Riverland Enduro, the third round of the Australian Off Road Championship, where Rhodes blitzed the field by over five minutes.

The ARB Griffith 400, the third round

of the ARB Off Road Racing Series, was next on the shopping list, where Rhodes again ran away from the field.

with Moorex property owner Greg Gartner and Jamie Jennings for the third podium position; Gartner backing off in the last lap after wayward smoke wafted into the cabin from a suspected leak on the exhaust.

Gartner and Jennings finished the event, albeit with a slower last lap.

INDOOR BOWLS Pennant Results Wendy Gray started playing netball with North Gambier in 1992 and last Saturday she suited up for the 300th time as a Tiger.

And the celebrations were complete given her A Reserve team mates did the right thing and secured a six goal victory over South Gambier in what was a top of the table clash. Wendy’s career is all about hard work and perseverance as she progressed through the ranks. She debuted in C Grade, played seven seasons of B Grade, was a member of the A Grade line-up from 2006-2008 and she is currently in her fifth season of A Reserve. A tight checking, tenacious defender, Wendy is as effective in the air as she is working the ground and she also possesses a great ability to read the play to deliver some spectacular interceptions.

“Wendy displays the attitude that how badly you want something, dictates how hard you work for it,” said club media manager Robyn Stafford. “She is an inspiration for players of all ages to always strive to better yourself and that hard work will earn you the rewards.” Premierships are the ultimate goal of all team sports and Wendy has been fortunate to play in two - being part of North Gambier’s 1906 and 2004 B grade premiership teams. She was also part of North’s 1997 B grade team that finished runnerup. Wendy has also accumulated personal accolades with club best and fairest titles in 1992, 1995 (both B Grade) and 2005 (A Reserve). She has also given back to the club, coaching the B Grade team in 2002 and the 13 & under age group in 2006. She also had a two year stint on the committee.

The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association conducted its junior singles championship earlier this month, with Zac Pearson taking out the title, going through undefeated in his final year as a junior player. Chris Sylvester from Moorak Red was the biggest improver taking out the runner up prize.

The Hamilton hosted 2014 Winter Swim Series, a two night competition, was completed earlier this month. Blue Lake Y Swim Club had 20 swimmers competing, in what for many of the swimmers was thier first competition since a raft of serious summer events. One of the youngest competitors to make the trip over to Hamilton was seven year old Aleisha Pearson who shaved 20 seconds off her personal best time from her first night swim to the second. This was a trend for the Blue Lake Y squad, with many personal best times set during the winter series.
