This is why the Australian Government is implementing the Stronger Relationships trial. The trial will run for 12 months from July 1, 2014, and provide up to 100,000 couples with $200 towards relationship education and counselling.

The trial is open to all couples over the age of 18 years in a committed relationship.

Couples will be able to participate in the Stronger Relationships trial at any phase of their relationship. They don’t have to be newlyweds, they don’t have to have children, and they don’t have to be living together.

LOCAL Investment in the future of forestry OneFortyOne Plantations is investing in the future of the Green Triangle forestry industry, awarding scholarships to assist two local students complete their studies.

Local Southern Cross University students Keith Atkinson and Courtney Pink will receive $2500 each from OneFortyOne as part of this initiative.

Mr Atkinson – a 2012 Bachelor of Forest Science and Management graduate and now honours student – began his study after 26 years working in the local forestry industry.

He is employed as a forest maintenance worker at ForestrySA and has also worked part time in its research department, which is what inspired him to gain a formal forestry education.

Ms Pink is a 22 year old born and educated Mount Gambier woman who is currently working locally as a forester with Timberlands Pacific.

She has combined this work with her forestry study for the past five years and is now in the final stages of her Bachelor of Forest Science and Management degree. OneFortyOne Plantations chief operating officer Owen Trumper said the education grants were a way for his business to support the communities in which OneFortyOne Plantations operates in. “Supporting forest research and students investing their future in our industry is important. Both Keith and Courtney have committed themselves to improving themselves and through their work improving our industry.

LOCAL A boost for young indoor bowlers

University’s Diana Lloyd said she was pleased to see OneFortyOne Plantations supporting local students in their forestry studies. “The two recipients are great examples of the opportunities that there are in the forestry sector in this region,” Ms Lloyd said. Mr Atkinson said he was grateful for the opportunity to increase his industry credentials by way of an honours degree in forestry and thanked OneFortyOne Plantations and his fellow forestry students for their support. Ms Pink said she had accumulated a HECS debt and other expenses throughout the duration of her studies and the scholarship would provide substantial assistance.

With only three weeks until the 45th Australian Indoor Bias Bowls National Championships, the Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association has given financial assistance to four of its junior player who are competing in the National Championships, which are being held here at the Icehouse. Two of the local contingent are very familiar with national championships and the other two will be playing for the first time. Zac Pearson will be representing South Australia for his sixth time and playing Junior Boys Singles for the last time, as he will have to move to the senior level next year. Zac will be the SA1 team and will have Aaron Hawke from Broken Hill playing in the SA2 team.

Zac was a part of the State Men’s Pairs winners this year and finished fifth last year in Toowoomba and hopes to finish in the top three this year. Keisha Pearson will compete for her fourth year playing as the SA1 team, having great form from just winning the Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association Ladies Singles and Champion of Champions.

Emma Knight will be the SA2 team player, only starting to play the game last year.

She has moved up to the highest level very quickly, has a great natural ability for the game and will be a great player in years to come. With Keisha being her mentor for the week Emma is hoping to gain valuable experience. Chris Sylvester has been asked to play for New South Wales - as the NSW team was short of a junior boy - a request he did not knock back. Chris has been playing the game for three years and was runner up in the MGDIBA junior singles this year and hopes to represent the NSW2 team well. This will be once again an great experience for Chris at the highest level for the juniors and he will have a week of Indoor Bowls that he won’t forget.

This is a State Event with low handicap golfers competing at the silver meeting from July 20-24. LOCAL Making their own luck Present Kym Sutherland with a problem and invariably he will solve it. And when it all comes down to it, that is what his successful family business - Beachport Liquid Minerals – a solution to a problem. “Being on the land myself and having concerns over the costs of supplements and the suitability of the supplements available for cattle, I just thought there had to be a better way,” he said. With four decades of experience in the livestock industry, there was no doubting Kym knew what farmers wanted and needed and what would best suit cattle and sheep. He catalogued just what he had observed and learned from years of property management of dry land grazing and intensive cell grazing properties, as well as his first hand knowledge of breeding programs, artificial insemination and animal nutrition through consulting roles. Then came the product development. “I am a firm believer when you don’t know something, employ people that do know,” Kym said. “I’ve

surrounded myself with people that know about their areas of expertise than I have.”

Kym’s simple approach has seen him build a hugely successful business that sees him and wife Chris on the road for eight months of the year, visiting long standing and potentially new clients nationwide. “90 percent of our business is in the top end of Australia,” Kym said. “It is proof that if you make something people need it doesn’t matter where you are based, you will attract customers.” And what they make is cost effective, tailor made mineral supplements that since hitting the market in February 2006 have taken the livestock market by storm. “We make our products to suit the region and even the individual property,” Kym said. That’s why he and Chris spend so much time on the road. LOCAL Bon apettit Jane Paech has lived in New York and Paris – two of the most famous cities in the world – but in the end, it was her childhood on the family farm at Hynam, near Naracoorte, that shaped her the most. And while her time in Paris especially allowed her to indulge her two great passions – food and writing – it was her early years on the farm that saw her develop an unwavering love and respect for fresh produce and creating beautiful dishes with that produce.“Pulling up vegetables straight from the ground, having the orchards,” Jane said. “I remember watching the big pots of apricot jam cooking on the stove – there were always cakes and biscuits and it was all about sharing meals. Food was all around you and you think that’s normal until you get out of that situation. My grandmother lived 100 yards away on the same property and I remember running between the two houses to see who had the best lunch or dinner.” So when it was time to start planning her future, you would think food would have been front and centre of her plans and she did apply to do hotel management but in the end she was accepted to nursing first and so she accepted and went off to Adelaide to train at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. That was when she was 17 and while she’s had her share of what if moments, it has been a case of all’s well that ends well. “Sometimes I did look back and regret that decision but I had a great time nursing,” Jane said. “Looking back now

I probably think you eventually end up on the same path anyway, the one you are meant to be on, and eventually my love of food is what it’s all about.”

Southern Grampians Shire Mayor has called on the next State Government to support rural Victoria by investing in services and infrastructure in regional centres such as Hamilton. Launching the Southern Grampians Shire Council’s priority projects today, Mayor Calvano said Hamilton has the potential to support State Government aspirations to grow Victoria’s rural economy by virtue of its central location. “Regional centres provide essential services to rural communities and are integral to sustained development in regional Victoria”, said Cr Albert Calvano.

“Hamilton provides critical services in health, education, recreation and the arts and is the regional hub for retail and support services for the agricultural sector.

“Also, it is essential that the shire’s major freight transport and infrastructure networks are supported and keep pace with projected demand”. Southern Grampians Shire is positioned at an important junction of three highways and the rail line to Portland and the rest of the State.

Existing demand, coupled with the shift to grain production, mineral sands shipments, wind farm construction and timber harvesting generates new demand for transport and provides a role for Hamilton in supporting freight logistics whilst protecting the amenity of residents in Hamilton. The provision of sustainable transport connections is an essential component of the shire’s economic prosperity and critical to the achievement of high health status, social inclusivity and liveability.“We have worked in partnership with the last two State Governments in developing

At the MS Europa’s itinerary-planning meeting in Germany in July, Portland’s “very enthusiastic welcome” has been listed as the main reason for the highend cruise liner company booking a return to the Port of Portland in 2017.

The company’s corporate communications manager Moritz Krause added that Portland had been remembered by its first visitors as an exciting cruise destination, with access to major tourist attractions in Australia.

The positive feedback was received by council just after the Cruise Ship to Portland Final Report was presented to the July Council Meeting. The report followed a successful shire wide tour, conducted by council staff in June, with cruise ship industry representatives, including P&O Cruise operators Carnival Australia, luxury travel consultant Abercrombie & Kent and a Tourism Victoria delegate. Council’s long term advocacy to attract the cruise ship tourism market was rewarded earlier this year when P&O confirmed that six vessels had been scheduled to arrive in Portland for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Two additional cruise line companies are also planning visits to Portland in 2015 and 2017, including a return of the MS Europa, which was the first cruise ship to call on the town in March this year. The MS Europa visit delivered a successful outcome both in terms of the domestic economy and the reputation of Portland as a cruise ship destination. Mayor Cr John Northcott said council staff and volunteers had worked hard to ensure the success of the first visit. “We are also working to identify ways the next visit can be even better,” he said.

Milk cartons to protect thousands of trees The Heytesbury District Landcare Network (HDLN) is saving trees to grow trees with a new initiative using thousands of unused milk cartons for a state-wide tree planting campaign.

The network is joining forces with Green Pastures Milk Company to provide cheap one-litre milk cartons for other Landcare groups, community organisations, schools and individual landholders to protect newly planted native trees.

Green Pastures is relaunching its one-litre milk in newly designed bottles and the HDLN is taking thousands of its unused cartons to sell on consignment as tree guards. HDLN Landcare Coordinator Geoff Rollinson said it was an opportunity to turn an unused product into a useful asset for growing trees. “Groups and private landholders usually turn to commercial suppliers for one or two litre milk cartons to protect their trees, costing up to 15 cents per tree guard,” Mr Rollinson said.

“We are selling them for 10 cents per guard and all the funds will go back into our environmental programs, meaning there’s an additional benefit.”

Milk carton tree guards are widely recognised for their ability to protect new plants from wind and grazing vermin such as rabbits, and for creating a suitable microclimate for the seedling to grow.

“We could have continued using the cartons until supplies expired but we were keen from a marketing perspective to launch the new-look bottles and it was a good fit for us to be involved in a major recycling and tree planting campaign,” Mr Davis said.

HDLN and Mr Davis have previously worked together on a major river health project involving planting hundreds of native trees where tree guards were used to great success. Mr Rollinson said the cartons are available to Landcare groups across Victoria, along with individuals and other groups. “There are a large number of spare cartons and we are pleased to recycle them as affordable tree guards that can be used around Victoria,” he said.

A top-rated line-up of 130 cyclists, including previous winners, New Zealander Samuel Horgan, and West Australian Anthony Giacoppo (pictured above), will contest the 2014 Campolina-Fulton-Hogan Tour of the Great South Coast, starting this Wednesday, in Mount Gambier. The field is made up of 54 riders from Victoria, 22 from New South Wales, 16 South Australians,15 Queenslanders, 10 West Australians, 6 New Zealanders, 4 Tasmanians, 2 from the ACT and Germany’s Raphael Freinstein, who will race with the CharterMason Giant Team. There are 19 teams in the five-day eight-stage race which will cover 565 gruelling kilometres through variable terrain in South Australia and Victoria before ending in Port Fairy on Sunday. The tour’s technical manager Kipp Kaufmann, also chief executive officer of Cycling Victoria, described the field as evenly matched and loaded with classy depth. “The sport of cycling is ready for five days of fabulous competition with the quality of this lineup,” Kaufmann said. “On paper, it is impossible

LOCAL Time to tackle tourism In recognition of the need to fill the void in Mount Gambier and district, a group of industry stakeholders recently formed a working party with the aim of facilitating the formation of

• A process to work with stakeholders to build a vision for Mount Gambier Tourism • A communication strategy to assist in engaging stakeholders in a collaborative process • A data collection process, including the collation of existing data, to inform the discussion; • A structure for a representative body for the Mount Gambier area.

Explaining that the process is in its very early stages, working party chairman and Mount Gambier Mayor Steven Perryman said the current group was not a representative body and as such it would not be involved

in advocacy on tourism and tourism development issues. “Its role is to facilitate the process which will see the eventual body established,” he said. “Tourism is everybody’s business, and in this spirit the working party looks forward to engaging soon with the many people who participate in and benefit from the tourism industry. “The group is currently working on collecting data that will inform and assist the discussion, and developing the communication strategy. “In coming weeks the working party will contact stakeholders directly and commence communication with the broader community.”

A forum in Warrnambool on August 14 will aim to stop “horrendous” levels of violence against women with disabilities.

The `Everybody’s Business: Taking action to prevent and respond to violence against women with disabilities’ forum will develop action plans to prevent the abuse, better support women with disabilities to report violence, and to close any gaps in local services.

The free forum on August 14 is being organised by the South West Carer and Respite Services Network in partnership with Women’s Health & Wellbeing Barwon South West. The forum will feature a panel discussion including Women with Disabilities Vic, Disabilities Services Commissioner, Office of the Public Advocate, Victoria Police, South West Centre Against Sexual Assault, and Emma House Domestic Violence Services Inc. The discussion will be followed by workshops to develop action plans covering prevention, reporting, partnerships and referral pathways. Keynote speaker will be comedian and disability advocate Stella Young, who was editor of ABC’s recently defunded Ramp Up website for news, discussion and opinion about disability in Australia. South West Carer and Respite Services Network coordinator Wendy Jones said the forum at Quality Suites Deep Blue Warrnambool would address a serious though often overlooked issue.

“Research tells us that women with disabilities experience high levels of family and sexual violence and also face specific barriers that prevent them from accessing help,” Ms Jones said. “They experience the same kinds of violence experienced by other women but also ‘disability-based violence’.

“The rate of violence towards women with disabilities is quite horrendous but we also know that a lot is not reported or picked up.”

Ms Jones said the southwest region was not immune from the high national rates of violence.

The forum is for all staff and management of network member organisations, carers, people with disabilities and organisations interested in taking collaborative action.

It’s been a big year for the Dartmoor Football Club - the former club of Greater Western Sydney Giants star forward Jeremy Cameron. They have rebranded the club from Swans to Giants, in honour of their most famous export, with inaugural GWS coach Kevin Sheedy helping relaunch the new look club.

And the Dartmoor Football Club makeover saw the club able to make a generous donation to some grateful children in South Africa. The club’s disused Swans guernseys and netball uniforms have made thier way to a small community with Paul Thiele delivering the gift that has already been put to great use.

I’m starting to think I’ve ruined my life. Sorry to start this week’s article in such a dramatic fashion but I thought you’d like to know and not all of you are following me on Facebook yet so I can’t rely on you reading my dramatic status updates. Let me explain what’s happened. I’ve made some changes to my diet. Calling it changes is something of an understatement by the way. A more accuracte description would be a total flavour embargo. It’s fair to say I’ve never been a good eater. I avoided fruit and vegetables as much as I could throughout my life. I was never convinced that they were as good as the experts claimed. As much as I say I avoid fruit and vegetables, I must qualify that by saying I built my diet around a vegetable, that vegetable being potato. I spent the first 30 years of my life eating hot chips for tea six nights a week and roast potatoes on the other night. In my younger days it really didn’t matter because like most young people I was active and played sport. When I wasn’t playing organised sport I was outside running around

the neighbourhood.

Admittedly that was mainly because Mum and Dad locked all the doors and wouldn’t let us come in until we’d run off all of our energy. One of two things would happen if you did that as a parent in the year 2014. Possibility one is that your child gets abducted by the thousands of paedophiles that the judicial system is allowing to prowl our streets. Possibility two is that some do-gooder calls the child helpline and Family Services rock up at your door. But I digress. The point is I’m not active enough anymore and I still eat essentially the same shocking diet. My main food groups are salt, chicken salt, lollies and other sweet treats, Hawaiian pizza and potato related dishes. I consider I’m eating a balanced diet when I eat Black Forest Cake as it covers my fruit and dairy intake. Unfortunately the good years are over now. I am carrying a few extra kilograms (if you use the word few in a non-traditional way to represent twenty). I have made spasmodic attempts to change my diet previously with limited success. In all honesty my diet is about a million percent better than it was 10 years ago and Donna is a big part of that as she makes me eat vegetables. Having said that you have to ask the question why I have put 10 kilograms on since we met. I’m still of the opinion that my diet was

Local producers win top State award so low on actual nourishment that now that I eat things containing vitamins and stuff like that my body is overstimulated and is trying to store it in case I go back to my previous diet. Anyway the major stimulus to attempting to improve my dietary intake is actually not my girth. The most recent kick in my giant butt has come from my dentist. While having a filling applied recently my dentist said that someone as young as me shouldn’t have teeth like mine and I really need to change the sugary food I’m eating and the acidic beverages I enjoy drinking.

Dentists have told me that before but I think the flattery about me being young made me listen more carefully.

The changes I’ve made feel very significant to me but the honest truth is that things are still not as good as they could or should be. But it’s a start. A friend asked me last week if I was feeling better since I’d made the changes and the honest truth is “no!”

My life is miserable. I relied on sugary treats to deal with things when I felt sad. I needed them as a way to reward myself when I did something good. Now I have nothing but an empty feeling in my chest. Life will go on though. If you can call this life. It doesn’t really feel like living. It’s really only existing.

Hay growers and balers from Bordertown, Kingston, Loxton, Burra, Wasleys and Jamestown have won state awards for their excellence in producing some of Australia’s best hay. The Feed Central National Hay Quality Competition – the first in Australia for large-scale commercial hay producers – is giving more than $10,000 in prizes to reward growers who produce high quality hay. The award winners were announced last week by Feed Central during the Australian Fodder Industry Association national fodder conference in Adelaide.

A total of 753 lots weighing 180,000 tonnes were inspected during the competition which ran between September 1 last year and June 30. The average lot size was 240 tonnes. The two Limestone Coast producers in the spotlight are Bordertown’s Mark Pridham and Kingston’s Rob Olsen, who shared the best lucerne feed abalysis award. Mark is a Bordertown grower and Rob is a baler from Limestone Coast Hay Services at Kingston.

Burra producer William Gebhardt from BS & W Pty Ltd had double success, winning both the best visual and best feed analysis awards for South Australian vetch. while the best lucerne visual appearance prize was awarded to Andrew Westbrook. from West Hay. in Loxton. Chris Bretag from Jamestown won the title of best cereal visual appearance and the Selleck family from Wasleys had the best cereal feed analysis. Feed Central managing director Tim Ford said the competition promoted the importance of good quality hay and recognised the excellent work of growers. “This is the first time that large scale commercial hay producers have had an opportunity to compete on a national basis for recognition of their hard work and quality produce,” Mr Ford said. Mr Ford said the inaugural competition attracted top quality entries. “Overall we had a good dry spring and hot dry summer nationwide which resulted in good quality hay being available,” he said. All hay submitted to the Feed Central hay inspection system is automatically entered in the competition and assessed for visual appearance and feed content. Mr Ford said more growers were recognising the value of producing good quality hay. “The fodder industry is big business and there can be a significant price difference between getting it right and getting it wrong,” he said. “High quality hay means more money for a supplier and better outcomes for end users.” Feed Central provides hay certification and marketing services to a national client base and has marketed and sold more than 100,000 tonnes of quality assured hay in the past 12 months.

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a frypan over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic and bacon or pancetta and cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes until the onion softens slightly. “Not being able to break into the job market in the formative period of a young person’s life puts them at risk of a life sentence of job insecurity, unemployment, poverty and social exclusion,” Mrs Bayne said.“Securing that first step on the job ladder is becoming much harder for our young people,” she said. Mrs Bayne said that until the global financial crisis and global recession, long term youth unemployment in Australia had been trending downwards.“However in Australia and internationally, young workers were the first to lose their jobs during the global economic crisis,” she said. “This has resulted in a disproportionate increase in the number of young people aged 15–24 who are unemployed - we are now seeing the impacts in our region.” Mrs Bayne said the LLEN recognised the worsening problem and was working on three concepts to improve local employability skills and aspirations, particularly for 15-19 year-olds. “We have recognised the distressing trend of youth unemployment in our region and are looking for ways to address this serious problem for our community,” she said.

Nearly one-in-four young people in south-west Victoria will be unemployed by 2016 unless more is done to create opportunities and improve education and training pathways. The South West Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN) has described the latest youth unemployment figures as distressing. South West LLEN is working with the State Government and local partners on new concepts to improve the employability skills and aspirations of young people. Acting chief executive officer Helen Bayne said the region was a recognised hot spot for youth unemployment and a concerted response was needed to address the problem. In February the unemployment rate for 15-24 year olds was 12.4 per cent in Victoria and 14.5 per cent for Warrnambool and south west Victoria. The Victorian rate has now jumped to 14.1 per cent – the highest level since 2001 – and although fresh figures are not yet available for the south-west it is expected to have risen above 15 per cent. The jobless rate for 15-19 year-olds is already at 20.4 per cent in Victoria and higher in the southwest, which is the third worst region in Victoria for youth unemployment.

LOCAL Youth unemployment - it’s time to act

Once one of the fittest men, Charles Furner has had to overcome some of the most grievous physical setbacks possible. At age nine years, Charles contracted polio and was incapacitated for three years, crippled in his back and legs. “I had to fight to recover, but Dad was a trained professional masseur and his constant massage and exercise programs enabled me to affect a full recovery,” he said.

Charles had been introduced to running by his father when he was nine and after his bout of polio resumed running again when he was 12 years old, winning races with the Adelaide Harriers Club. At 18 years of age, Charles was still running until a fusion of the lower spine hospitalised him again for several months.

By the time he was 27 years old, Charles had given running away and took up bicycle racing and whilst training for the Mount Gambier 100 Mile Classic disaster struck again when a car struck him and he went to the old Mount Gambier Hospital, undergoing several operations which resulted in pins and plates being inserted in his legs, However with great determination, the iron man, using the same methods as before, plus a steel will, came back to radiant health. All this fired Charles up to help others in similar situations, so he set himself up as a masseur in Ballarat, after serving a traineeship with his father, which lasted several years and studying overseas and interstate and obtaining diplomas in Remedial massage, Chinese massage, Shiatsu and sports massage. Sixteen years later, after working exhausting hours seeing near 100 clients per week, Charles decided on a change in pace and lifestyle so he set up a clinic for 15 years on the Gold Coast. As his heart was never in the Gold Coast, Charles moved back home to South Australia for two reasons.

Firstly, to set up his new clinic at 49 Sturt Street, Mount Gambier (in between Crouch Street and Pick Avenue). His well-equipped premises contain the latest equipment and he takes personal interest in every client he treats. “You have to get into the muscles and sometimes this tinges a bit at first, but after a while the improvement is remarkable,”

Charles said. “It was important to be frank and honest with my clients. I tell them what they should do to improve their health, that they must look after themselves and how best to do this. Without your health, what have you got? The beauty of it all is - I did it myself the hard way, without which I would have suffered the most agonising pain.” Charles offers Monday to Saturday appointments and after hours appointments. “I am willing to be flexible to accommodate clients’ needs.,” he said. The second reason to return was to overcome his fears by wanting to get back on a racing bike after an absence of 38 years, to complete the Mount Gambier 100 Mile Classic in the near future, that had once eluded him.

Unfortunately, Charles’ original racing bike was totally destroyed and is unable to afford the price of a new one. “If anyone could donate or offer at a reasonable price to complete pre-loved racing bike this would enable me to continue my cycling passion and complete the goal I set myself, 30 years ago,” he said. Quinoa prawn risotto 250g punnet cherry tomatoes, halved 1/4 cup (60ml) olive oil 1 teaspoon caster sugar 1 onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 long red chilli, finely chopped 1 1/2 cups (300g) quinoa 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1/3 cup (80ml) white wine 2 1/2 cups (625ml) chicken stock 20 cooked, peeled (tails intact) prawns 1/3 cup oregano leaves Method Preheat oven to 160°C. Place tomatoes, cut-side up, on a baking tray and drizzle with 1 tablespoon

oil. Scatter with sugar and salt.

Bake for 25 minutes or until softened. Meanwhile, heat remaining 2 tablespoons oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook onion, stirring, for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add garlic and chilli, then cook, stirring, for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Add the quinoa, stirring to coat the grains, then stir in tomato paste and wine. Simmer for 1 minute or until wine has evaporated.

Add stock and bring to a simmer.

Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes or until quinoa is tender.

Stir in prawns to warm through, then stir in tomatoes and half the oregano. Season, then scatter with remaining oregano and serve.

Western Border netball set to celebrate its 30th birthday It all started back in 1984 when a netball competition, led by inaugural president Stan Bannam, joined the 20 year old Western Border Football League. Thirty seasons on and the competition has seen clubs, players and volunteers come and go but most importantly it has survived. It is still a strong competition as the current six member clubs – Millicent, West Gambier, North Gambier, South Gambier, the newly merged Casterton Sandford and East Gambier – go toe to toe across seven competition grades and two under 12 development grades. This weekend, everyone that has played their role in ensuring the Western Border Netball Association has made this 30 year milestone and the

players, administrators, officials, volunteers and sponsors that are hands on in 2014 will celebrate the Western Border Netball Association 30th birthday. League and club life members are being involved in special match day celebrations with best on court medals being presented to each team in each grade to commemorate the 30th birthday with short official proceedings also on the day with a celebration afternoon tea to thank past players, administrators, officials, volunteers and sponsors as well as those in the role in the current competition. The 30th birthday commemoration games will be held at Blue Lake Sports Park, Island Park and McDonald Park. The Commodore on the Park will also host a two hour cocktail party from 5.30-7.30pm with a display of memorabilia and brief formalities at 6.30pm. The 30th birthday party is a chance for all the current and past people involved in the association to catch up as the association looks to honour the past and look to the future. The 1984 premiership went the way of the Bulldogs in a two goal victory over current powerhouse Millicent with Kathy Younghusband and Jeanette Stuchbery among the best in the inaugural season decider.

Millicent returned the tables the following year before North Gambier won the first of its record 11 A Grade premierships in 1986 – enjoying a five year run from 1988-1992 and then the recent three-peat from 2003-2005. Of course the modern day Saints also now have 11 of their own in the trophy cabinet and are odds-on favourite to head to the top of the leaderboard this season. In fact, if the Saints do emerge as the 2014 premiers, they will also become the first team to secure six consecutive titles. Millicent is also the club to have provided the longest serving president of the association. Di Facey (top left) stepped into the very large shoes of Stan Bannam in 1989 and then stayed in the role for an astonishing 16 seasons. Di was a player in the inaugural season and played in that first title decider and there is nothing that has happened in this association

that the association patron has not seen. The honour roll for individual accolades also boasts some iconic netball names and Millicent’s Donna Denton certainly heads that list with seven A grade best & fairest to her name – polling in every game in last season’s victory. Young softballer to host fundraiser Chance to learn from one of sport’s best Amber Hood capped off a remarkable 18 months in softball with Australian team selection following the 17 & Under Schoolgirls National Championships in May. It means the talented catcher is heading to Hawaii at the end of next month as part of the Australian 17 & Under Schoolgirls team. On the back of Amber representing both South Australia at State and State Schoolgirls level, the national selection was reward for effort for the young softballer, who trains hard with her mother Tanya to constantly develop and improve her game. Of course, national selection, especially at junior level, comes with its share of costs and Amber (below) has been fortunate enough for some of her most ardent supporters to put together a fundraiser this Saturday night at the Mount Gambier RSL. The happy hour and auction is $15 a head and runs from 7-9.30pm. There are around 20 items set to go under the hammer including a house boat cruise with nibbles and complimentary drink on arrival; a full day fishing charter for eight people; a signed Jimmy Bartel jumper; a signed Scott Pendelbury jumper; a Black Caviar print; a Carlin & Gazzard Mercedes Benz for a weekend with free tank of fuel and a Party Package, which includes a keg of beer, a whole lamb and Baker’s Delight and She’s Apples vouchers.

The best coaches across all sporting codes will tell you, part of their development is learning from elite coaches from other sporting codes and Limestone Coast sporting coaches have just that opportunity on Wednesday, September 17, when cricket coach Darren Berry comes to Mount Gambier. The free seminar runs from 6.30-8.30pm with a 6pm registration and refreshment session at the West Gambier Football Club. The Redbacks and Adelaide Strikers coach was a decorated wicketkeeper in his own right before moving into the coaching ranks. Registrations are essential as numbers are limited and registrations will close on September 9, unless the spots are filled beforehand.

Local Sport A champion on & off court

Stacy Chapman is the kind of player every club wants – supremely consistent, hard working and willing to roll her sleeves up on and off the court. You could run through Stacy’s playing resume alone and North Gambier would have every reason to be thrilled with just what Stacy has helped the club achieve but when you add to that six years on the committee, including a five year stint from 2004-’08 that included four years as secretary, regular umpiring commitments and a few stints coaching both juniors and senior line-ups and Stacy has been invaluable.

Opposition teams might have seen this slightly built goaler and some time mid courter and wondered what trouble this smiling Tiger could cause. The answer is plenty. She is a creative player who controls whatever attack line she lines up in. An accurate finisher she is a smart player who uses her pace to great effect and is always looking to bring her team mates into the contest. A strong voice on court, Stacy leads by example with her workrate – working hard both with ball in hand and without. She started with the Tigers in 2000 in the 17 & under team and finished runnerup in the club best and fairest, a feat she repeated the following season before progressing the senior ranks where she debuted in B grade in 2002. Stacy played in the B grade line-up for three seasons, capping that chapter of her life as a North Gambier player with a premiership in 2004. She debuted in A Reserve in 2005 and was honoured with the captaincy in 2006. By 2008 she was the coach of the A Reserve, a role she has resurrected this season. In 2011, she turned her coaching hand to the 17 & Under team, alongside younger sister Michelle Turnbull. It was the season she also finished runner-up in the club’s A Reserve best & fairest. After having 2012 off, Stacy returned to the A Reserve court in 2013 and was again runner-up in the club best and fairest before going one better in 2013 when she was the Western Border Netball Association A Reserve best and fairest.

This season, Stacy is coaching and playing alongside many of her long time friends from Tigerland and the team is sitting in second at the moment in what is one of the most competitive grades in the competition this season. There is no doubt Stacy would be looking to add to that 2004 B Grade premiership by going all the way this season.

Tenacious defender reaches 100

Tenacious, determined, tight checking – ask any opposition shooter and at least one of those words would immediately come to mind when describing North Gambier defender Alannah Campbell. Not many goalers relish playing the Tiger goal defence – her relentless attack on the ball makes for a long day at the office with her opponent having to work harder than usual to shake off the defender as well as knowing she will contest every possession. As strong on the ground as she is in the air, Alannah can fill any of the back three defensive posts and she works just as hard as a driving option through the mid court. Last weekend she played her 100th game as a Tiger and she would be happy to see her A grade team mates starting to find some consistency ahead of this season’s finals, racking up their third consecutive victory with a solid win over Casterton Sandford. And Alannah’s impact has not been limited to the court. She has served on the committee, been a regular umpire and is currently the coach of the 17 & under team. And Alannah has been the Shirley Underwood Medalist in the past two ANZAC Day clashes in a sure sign, the big stage holds no fear for her.

Fifty games for young Tiger She is best known for her softball prowess but Amber Hood is no slouch on the netball court either. She brings the same competitive spirit and determination to her netball and her pace and athleticism troubles all opposition mid courters.

Amber played her 50th game for North Gambier at the weekend after starting her career in the Mount Gambier Netball Association. She is an outstanding talent with her ability to find her goalers in space with her good vision and clever passing and she also is a hard working defensive player, chasing down loose balls, using her elevation to great effect and always refusing to concede.
