COVER Look what’s new at Metro Bakery & Cafe Four years ago, Toni Vorenas was preparing high school students for their SACE exams, today she is putting the finishing touches to Metro Bakery & Cafe’s new bakehouse, which should be fully operational in a couple of weeks. The expanded bakery is great news for customers, allowing Metro to expand its already extensive and delicious range of fresh breads, pastries and cakes.

From an early age, Toni always knew she would be a teacher, and for years it was her passion, guiding students through literature and writing and ensuring they were not just good students but developing into good people. You could never have convinced this dedicated educator that hospitality and food would become her life even as recently as five years ago – but it has – and in the end, it is a career path that, on closer examination, makes perfect sense. Toni loves food. Culturally she really had no choice, growing up in an Italian family and marrying into the Greek tradition. “In both the Greek and Italian culture, food is a celebration, it’s the centre of everything,” Toni said. “Our food experience is loud, you share your food, the experience is full of laughter and music.” The original coffee and sandwich bar business that opened four years ago has evolved into the bustling, sophisticated cafe which morphs from breakfast hotspot, to lunchtime meet and greet, to a night time venue perfect for catching up with friends and family, seamlessly. It has become a cafe with no real target demographic - it’s been embraced by the entire community.

The business has built its reputation on its housemade sweet treats, artisan baked bread and delicious Mediterranean style meals. “All the changes have been customer driven, needs driven, and I think that’s the only way it can succeed,” Toni said. It has also seen an expansion of staff, particularly

behind the scenes with the bakery alone keeping a pastry chef, two apprentices and a baker run off their feet. Kamal Perwu is the longest serving of the bakehouse staff and heads up the dedicated team. He is a softly spoken pastry chef from India. He’s about as removed from the volatile, passionate image we normally have of chefs. He’s measured, chooses his words carefully and just gets the job done. He didn’t start out wanting to be a chef but when a career in information technology failed to find him consistent employment, his younger brother, who worked in hospitality suggested the change and he hasn’t looked back. Metro Bakery & Cafe has been Kamal’s home since February 2011 and aside from a trip to India to get married, Mount Gambier has been his adopted home. His Metro shift starts at midnight and then finishes up around 10 hours later. For someone who never considered a career in cooking, his quiet passion for everything he creates is astonishing. “I particularly love making wedding cakes and cakes for special occasions,” he said. And the new, larger capacity bakehouse will allow Kamal to continue to develop new delights for Metro customers. And Metro customers will soon have a whole new location to enjoy their barista prepared coffee and decadent sweets with A Slice of Metro opening at 167 Commercial Street East next to the Mount Gambier Laundry and Jetts Fitness. Toni and the team are taking over the cafe, which will now run independently of the laundry and offer a range of Metro’s light meals, brunch, coffee and the usual delicious cakes and pastries. A Slice of Metro is the latest evolution of the successful business and will open its doors next month.

Preparations are already under way with the event date set for Sunday, January 11. The committee has had their thinking caps on of late, brainstorming new ideas with the long term sustainability of the festival in mind. “The food and wine festival competition is fierce so it is important we keep improving our event every year to ensure the punters have a great time,” said Kate Napper. Of course the foundations of the festival still remain including fabulous live entertainment to get everyone in the mood – The Bill Parton Trio will be headlining at the 2015 event. Grease and line the base and sides of a 19 x 29cm slice pan with baking paper, allowing the long sides to overhang. Use an electric mixer to beat the butter and sugar until combined. Add the egg and beat until just combined. Add the flour and coconut and stir with a wooden spoon until combined. Spoon mixture into the prepared pan and smooth the surface with the back of a spoon. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes or until

Sprinkle evenly over the lemon curd.

Bake in oven for 20-25 minutes or until the coconut is lightly golden and set. Set aside in pan to cool completely. Cut into squares to serve.

LOCAL Fishing industry set to celebrate 50 years... and you’re invited A special event will be held at Robe next month to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the boat channel and the history of the local fishing industry.

The ‘Trip Down Memory Lane’ event on Saturday, September 20, is being organised by the new Robe Local History Group to coincide with the annual Blessing of the Fleet ceremony the following day. History Group convenor Liz Harfull said organisers hope former residents and descendants of families involved in the town’s commercial fishing industry will join the local community to share their memories and celebrate the milestone. The group is also putting a call out to people directly involved with the construction of the channel and the opening ceremony in 1964. “To help make the history event a success, we would love to hear, as soon as possible, from anyone who has information, photos, memorabilia and stories to share so we can plan ahead and feature it on the night,” Ms Harfull said. “While there will be a focus on the channel, we are also planning to explore the broader history of commercial fishing at Robe and how it compares with today, and find out more about early Blessing of the Fleet ceremonies.” A selection of the images provided will be projected up on to a large screen during the event, together with rarely seen pictures from the history collection at the Robe Library, and photos gathered from private and public collections by Ms Harfull while she was researching her book, Almost an Island: the story of Robe. Ms Harfull will introduce the photos and encourage people in the audience to share what they know about them and their own stories. Memorabilia gathered will also be on display in the Institute during the evening. The history group is hoping people will come forward with items such as early fishing equipment,

original tools used to make and repair pots and nets, items connected with Blessing of the Fleet ceremonies, programs or tickets from fishing industry events, certificates or receipts relating to boats, licenses and lobster catches, and packaging and labels from local processing plants.

As part of the project, the history group is also planning to interview people with personal memories of the fishing industry, the channel being built and the opening ceremony to add to the town’s oral history collection. Ms Harfull said the idea for the special event came out of a workshop held in Robe in June to train volunteers in gathering oral history. About 15 volunteers took part in the workshop, which was sponsored by the Robe District Council and led by respected Adelaide historian Dr Karen George and State Library of SA audio engineer, Silver Moon. “We talked about future activities for the group, which has been set up to capture more of the area’s rich history, and to help make the collection at the Robe Library more accessible to the general public,” Ms Harfull said. “Given this year marks the 50th anniversary of the channel being finished, we thought setting up a project to capture more of its history was an ideal place to start.” Ms Harfull said commercial fishing had a fascinating history at Robe, with the town playing a key role in at least two significant national developments.

“In the 1940s, it became the hub of a new industry, catching sharks so that oil could be extracted from their livers as a replacement for some 80,000 gallons of cod liver oil imported every year to treat vitamin deficiencies,” she said. “Cod was no longer available because it came from European fisheries which were in the middle of a war zone. The smaller sharks found off the Limestone Coast were ideal, and two big pharmaceutical companies,

Aspro and Fauldings, sourced oil from Robe.

“Then towards the end of the war Robe played a vital part in forming SAFCOL, the first cooperative of its kind in Australia.

Beachport held the first meeting to discuss the concept, but the collective meeting of South East fishermen which voted formally to create the cooperative was held at Robe on November 28, 1944.” As the fishing fleet expanded, pressure grew to provide better facilities, with boats lost or seriously damaged most years when north-westerly gales blew them onto the Robe foreshore.

The concept of creating a channel so that boats could be moored in Lake Butler was talked about for at least 20 years before government funding was finally made available. The channel was officially opened in August 1964 by then Premier, Sir Thomas Playford. The Trip

A men’s health night at Active Health Portland on September 10 will encourage men to take better care of their health. It is hoped the night will inspire men to eat better, exercise more and take more regular trips to the doctor. The event from 5.30-7.30pm will include a tour of Active Health Portland, free health checks, health screening information, diet advice, healthy drinks and food, and speakers detailing how they improved their health. Guest speakers will be Brian Lineker who lost 50kg and transformed his life to improve his health and the coordinator of the Portland Stroke Support Group, Jason Killick, who will detail his recovery from a stroke.

One of the event organisers, Portland District Health community health counsellor and coordinator of the Portland Men’s Shed, Gerry Leonard, said many men neglected their health. “A lot of men will only go to the doctor at the last resort,” he said. This is despite men having shorter life expectancy than women, higher cardiovascular and mental health risks and more exposure to accidents. “Seventy five percent of male mortality is due to lifestyle causes,” Mr Leonard added.

“It’s an issue that needs to be addressed and we’re encouraging men to have more regular check-ups and to address their health issues.” Mr Leonard said men would benefit from the information and options available at Active Health Portland.

Apart from doctors, Active Health Portland has allied health professionals such as an exercise physiologist, dietitian, diabetes educator, health promotion officers and nurses who can help men to improve their health. It also features a gymnasium area.

Dr Scott Deller will attend the evening to undertake free health checks including sunspot and blood pressure checks.

Healthy food options and non-alcoholic drinks will be available.

A gold coin donation will raise money for the Portland Men’s Shed.

Captain’s Diary Michael Clarke After a three year losing streak in the Ashes, complete with a painfully recent 3-0 loss in England, facing the victorious English cricket team so soon was never going to be an easy battle. The public’s faith in the young Australian team was waning. Despite their failures, captain Michael Clarke records in his diary a feeling of hunger in his team: a hunger to strike back, a hunger to prove their talent to the world. A hunger to return the urn. Michael Clarke led his team to an Ashes victory at home in a 5-0 triumph over the 201314 summer. Along the way, the tide of public affection turned in his favour for the first time.

Clarke had previously been respected for his deeds as a batsman, but had not truly won the hearts of sports fans. This Ashes series changed that.

Clarke showed the grit, talent, charisma and aggression Australian sports fans look for in their leaders. Revealing and insightful, Clarke once again puts his unique mark on the sport, giving us his account of how he rallied both the team and public behind him to bring the urn home.

Michael Clarke grew up in Liverpool, in Sydney’s south west. He cracked the NSW team at 18 and won a Test berth in 2004, scoring 151 not out on debut. In 2011, Clarke became the 43rd captain of the Australian Test team, as well as taking the reins as leader of the Australian one-day side.

In 101 Tests he has scored over 8000 runs at an average over 51 with 27 centuries.

LOCAL Long serving support worker retires For the past 20 years Bev Baillie has spent more time away from home than at home. As a rostered overnight support worker for three people with disabilities in one of the group homes managed by STAY Residential Services, Bev has developed great rapport with the residents and the staff team.

Now Bev has officially retired after taking long service, ending a long and dedicated career. Bev started work in the disability field many years earlier providing in-house respite for parents of people with disabilities in the former Shire of Mount Rouse. After a break she decided she wanted to return to the field and in 1994 successfully applied to the then Mulleraterong Residential Services Assoc. , which later changed its name to STAY Residential Services. Bev started as a casual staff member working across all STAY’s residential sites before moving onto a permanent role as a support worker at the Gordon Street home. “I’ve liked working on my own for 20-hour shifts while knowing there was always someone at the end of the phone if you need them,” she said. It has been challenging but very rewarding work.

Bev originally did three shifts per week but later reduced it to two. “They’re long shifts – one shift effectively takes two days and by the time you get home you’re tired,” she said. “We start at 2 o’clock in the afternoon and finish at 10 the next morning. I did that for 20 years,” Bev said.

“I quite liked the work itself; I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t enjoy supporting people with disabilities. “I gained a passion for

this work when I was doing the work for the shire and I wanted to go back to it.” Bev has enjoyed her time with STAY, describing it was a well-run and important organisation that looks after its staff and clients. CEO Maree Sandford praised Bev’s dedication and commitment to supporting people with a disability as commendable. “Bev has been a very valued member of the STAY team,” she said. Ms Sandford and residents of the home recently presented Bev with a 20year certificate of appreciation to mark her retirement along with flowers and a gift. Now nearing 70, Bev said she hopes to take it easy in her retirement. STAY supports 16 people with a disability who live in STAY residential homes, provides respite for 47 people and supports other people with disabilities in the community. Is it possible that we live in the most personality-less era in the history of humanity? And while I’m asking a question, I already have the answer so don’t bother thinking about it. We definitely do live in the most personalityless period in the world’s history. When exactly did the world lose its sense of humour? People take everything so seriously these days. There doesn’t seem to be anything said by anyone that couldn’t possibly offend someone.

The world wants everyone to be perfect and never say anything that could upset anyone. We’re trying to get people to be perfect (which is impossible) instead of teaching people to cope with the imperfection of people. One of the most scary aspects of this problem is that we have been so actively responsible for it. No-one is actually allowed to have an individual personality anymore.

We have all allowed the media and the world to decide that we all have to have the same personality. We have to think the same things, watch the same things, believe the same things. If you dare to step outside of the boundaries of what is allowed to happen in your head then you will be torn apart and treated like you’re crazy. After thinking about it for several minutes, I have come to the conclusion that there are only two people in Australia who have their own personalities and point of view, separate to the personality shared by the rest of us - Clive Palmer and his son Kyle Sandilands. I know they’re not actually father and son but if someone told you tomorrow (or even today in this article) that they were related, it wouldn’t actually surprise you that much. You’d be like, “I can see that.

That makes perfect sense.” But anyway, Clive Palmer says crazy things about

A community think tank in October will look for new ways to tackle south-west Victoria’s youth unemployment crisis, with the region now recognised as the worst in Victoria. In the past three months, youth unemployment in the south-west has increased from 14.5 to 18 per cent, reducing the region from third worst to being the worst area in the state. South West Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN) has described the figures as a “social crisis” and said the community needed to react to reverse the trend. South West LLEN, in conjunction with Glenelg Southern Grampians LLEN and the Great South Coast Group, is planning a community think tank to come up with practical ideas to address the problem. South West LLEN acting CEO Helen Bayne said the employment situation for local 15-24 year-olds was critical and likely to get worse. The Brotherhood of St Lawrence earlier this year predicted that if youth unemployment continued to rise at the same rate it would hit 22.5 per cent in Warrnambool and south west Victoria by 2016. Now that figure could be even worse with the south-west experiencing the biggest percentage increase of any Victorian region over the past three months. “We were bad, now we’re worse and we’re likely to go beyond that Brotherhood of St Lawrence prediction unless something changes. Sadly there are no signs that our local economy and jobs market are going to improve in the near future,” Mrs Bayne said. “It’s time for the community to come together and do something about it.

“We’ve been a hot spot for youth unemployment for some time – now the volcano is erupting.”

A date and venue for the forum are yet to be confirmed but Mrs Bayne said community, industry, government, education and business leaders would attend and it would be open to any interested person with positive suggestions. “We’ve been advocating a whole-of-community approach to addressing our region’s low year 12 or equivalent attainment rates and we need to extend that to finding ways to help our young people find jobs,” Mrs Bayne said. “When people realise that nearly one-in-five of your young people can’t find work, I’m sure they will respond and hopefully suggest worthwhile local practical ideas for short and long-term solutions.”

I blame the loss of personality in the world on tennis. I think you can trace all of the push for people to live their lives as personality-less robots to when the faceless men decided John McEnroe screaming at umpires and smashing racquets was unacceptable. From

From personality it spread to suppressing flavours. When did Diet Coke come out? 1982, coincidentally the same period when McEnroe’s behaviour was starting to be questioned. The media has convinced us that food that tastes good is somehow bad for us. They trot out expert after expert to tell us that everything is bad for us. The only problem with this is that they seem to change the advice every two or three years, almost like they have to trot out a new theory every two to three years to justify the funding they’re receiving from one government or another. I don’t trust them and I want sugar. And a Polly Waffle. I’m on the edge. Why when scientists make something up is it a theory but when I come up with a theory it’s paranoia. LOCAL The essence of country shows lands in Adelaide A national best-seller about the traditions of show cooking competitions will help to raise funds for South Australian country shows at this year’s Royal Adelaide Show.

The Australian Blue Ribbon Cookbook will be sold as a fundraiser at the SA Country Shows stand where author Liz Harfull will also make a series of guest appearances. The book captures the stories, secret tips and first-prize winning recipes of cooks from across the country, including five South Australians.

Released in April and already in its third print run, it is the much-anticipated follow-up to Ms Harfull’s first Blue Ribbon Cookbook, which concentrated on South Australian shows and won a world cookbook award in Paris. The latest version has been Allen & Unwin’s number one selling title of the week in Australia, and in the top 10 best-sellers list for non-fiction. Its success has also led to the author being inundated with invitations to appear at shows across Australia. Ms Harfull is just back from the Brisbane show, and now preparing for a busy spring that will take her everywhere from south-western WA to northern NSW, and places in between, including the Royal Melbourne Show.“The response has been overwhelming. People seem to have really connected to the stories and traditions connected with country shows, and this kind of cooking,” she said. “There are no celebrity chefs, no dietary fads and no recipes that require a trip to a specialty store before you

Just simple, old-fashioned ingredients and knowhow handed down through generations by people with a generous spirit.” Among the cooks featured are Vaughan Wilson from Strathalbyn, Joyce Fendler from Tungkillo, Jean Biggins from Naracoorte, Rodney Chapman from Tanunda and well-known Adelaide media personality, Amanda Blair. “They all contributed a recipe that has been used to win a first prize, as well as their secret tips on how to get it right,” Ms Harfull said. “It was difficult to choose recipes, but I wanted to make sure there were show favourites like sponges, fruit cakes, marmalade and tomato sauce, while selecting versions that were different to those in the first book.

Glenelg Shire will stay an unconventional gasfield free zone if Glenelg Shire Council gets its way. Councillors have unanimously supported a motion, moved by Cr John Northcott, at last night’s August Council Meeting. In front of an overflowing public gallery at the Portland Council Chambers, Cr Northcott said Council could not risk the future of sustainable farm land for gas well failure. In moving the motion, all councillors made it clear they had requested information from industry but that it had not been forthcoming. “The latest information communicated is that the gasfields may only last 10 years, whereas earlier it was communicated that they would last 30 years,” Cr Northcott said.“Failure of the evaporation basins is already a problem and more basins would only worsen the situation.

“Drilling for unconventional gas poses a risk to water tables across the Otway basin where coastal towns and cities depend on underground water and this also means clean healthy food would come under threat from potentially contaminated water supplies “There is currently a potential loss of property values with neighbouring properties in New South Wales and Queensland and properties in our Shire would be hard to sell with values falling up to 50 per cent of their present value.”

LOCAL Wall to wall craft sessions at courthouse The Old Courthouse Gallery on Bay Road has developed into a hub of activities and opportunities for artists and craftspeople.

Throughout the year a dedicated group of artists continue to keep this venue available to share with others. Currently the Old Courthouse is hosting a series of workshops which will run through to November this year. Members of the public are welcome to share in these curious forms of art and craft. A rewarding day was had by a group of ladies recently at the Funky Doll Workshop. Each participant created their own individual, fully wired doll with a difference. On Saturday, September 6, from 10am to 1.30pm Cherree Densley will be instructing participants on the construction of an Apple Collecting Basket.

It will be constructed from Palalbang cane, vines and fabric. This is an excellent opportunity to learn how to use natural materials and up-cycle other pieces. The cost of this class is $35.

On Saturday, October 25, from 10am to 1.30pm, Peggy Schwarz will share her

skills in book making. Peggy will teach the construction of a hard cover, leather bound book as well as two to three small signature books. This class will encompass opportunities for beginners as well as those with some previous book making experience. The cost of this class is $35 plus a $10 kit. On Saturday, November 16, from 10am to 3pm, Chris Pudney will explore the intriguing craft of recycling used paper into creative and useful sheets of up-cycled art. She will incorporate plant matter, fibre and texture into individual sheets of hand crafted paper. Participants will be encouraged to share ideas and inspiration with others. All materials and equipment will be supplied and the cost of this day is $50. For class bookings and information contact Glenys Hughes on 0466 155 848. LOCAL The joy of reading in Millicent

Gladys Smith Early Learning Centre celebrated Book Week with families and friends, highlighting the important role adults play in instilling the joy of reading and storytelling in our youngest children. During Reading Hour last Tuesday night, children and parents joined educators Naomi and Tracy in a dinosaur romp sharing stories, songs, and activities based on the Emu Room’s recent Dinosaur project. Complemented with Milo and biscuits the evening was a great success.

Many children of the centre enjoyed dressing up throughout the week and roleplaying their favorite characters, creating opportunities for children to develop their own story lines, characters and adventures. These opportunities were further strengthened with a visit from the children of Millicent North Kindergarten, who were also dressed in their favourite costumes. Together they sang, danced and

took their imaginative play outside to all areas of the Emu Room. The week ended on a high with a visit from Mrs Green’s year 6/7 class from Newbery Park Primary School. The ‘big kids’ came with arms full of books ready to read and share their stories with all the children in the centre. This proved to be a fun learning experience for the ‘big’ and ‘little’ children as they read their stories, talked about the pictures and took to the outdoors to play. The Newbery Park children were able to teach even the youngest children the enjoyment of sharing books, and the Gladys Smith children reminded the ‘big kids’ about the value of play. “I enjoyed reading the books to the children and listening to them talk about what they liked about the books,” said Emma Gibbs. “I also liked playing outside with them and learning about what the children spend their time doing.” The power of adults to provide opportunities in children’s lives to build connections and develop a love of reading and learning is invaluable. The Centre will continue to provide these opportunities for children as a regular part of the curriculum and bringing community together.

LOCAL Cows create careers program creates careers With a love of animals and the show arena, Ollie Abblitt has an infectious enthusiasm for the dairy industry. Dairy is a family affair for Ollie; growing up in North West, Tasmania, Ollie’s parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins are all either dairy farmers or involved in the dairy industry. “I spent school holidays on my parent’s farm and I would have a week ‘holiday’ with my grandparents, which usually involved helping out on their dairy farm,” she said. In 2008 Ollie participated in Dairy Australia’s Cows Create Careers program as a year ten student at Circular Head Christian School in Smithton, Tasmania. At the time, teacher Josh Smith was involved in delivering the program at the school. “The program caters for all learning types as there are many components to it; there is the hands-on calf rearing, computer research, craft, letter writing and scientific reports,” Josh said.

“Cows Create Careers is a good program because it captures the interests and skills of nearly all the students. Ollie is a good example of this; she did the program and was engaged by the variety of activities Cows Create Careers provided her. She was a student that showed a lot of initiative in the hands-on component of the program and this also allowed her to engage fully,” Josh said. The program was taught within the school’s science curriculum as Agriculture Science, and even though Ollie came from a strong dairy farming background, Cows Create Careers still offered her new ideas and experiences. “At sixteen, I only saw what was happening physically on my parent’s farm and not all the background work of people like agronomists, nutritionists and financial advisors,” Ollie said. “We got to look at aspects of soil science and plant biology, some of the information I learnt then is the basis of my soil science knowledge today. I would credit Cows Create Careers for opening my mind further to more aspects of the dairy industry and what’s involved with dairy industry jobs.” The program’s ‘hands-on’ nature - especially interacting with two three-week-old calves at school - was Ollie’s favourite part of the program. “Being hands-on is one of the best aspects of the program!” “My favourite part of Cows Create Careers was having the calves on the school campus and being involved with them on a regular basis,” she said. Teacher, Josh Smith believes that the program is successful because it brings a sense of community into the classroom.

“The success of Cows Create Careers, in my opinion, is due to the fact that we are bringing the ‘real world’ into the classrooms rather than teaching out of a text book or researching information that may or may not be relevant. Cows Create Careers provides a learning experience that is authentic and totally connected to the community,” Josh said. After completing year 12 in 2013, Ollie then went on to complete a Certificate III and IV in Agriculture, and by January 2014, she had been offered an apprenticeship on a dairy farm in Glencoe, South Australia. It was her drive and passion for the dairy industry that made her make the journey across the Tasman to take up the new opportunity, and it paid off - the now 22-year-old is Herd Manager, milking 330 Guernseys on the 550-cow dairy farm. No two days on the farm are the same; Ollie’s involved with droving stock, paddock rotations, feed budgeting, animal health and nutrition, calf rearing and the genetic progress of the cows.

doing all of the typical stuff I can be found halter training cattle for shows, planning show teams, scheming the breeding of our next top cow - it all keeps me challenged,” Ollie said. However her favourite aspect of the job is watching the animals develop. “I spend a lot of time working out breeding plans for the cows,” she said. “It is rewarding to see a mating that really works - to see something on paper turn into a really good animal in the calf shed, the paddock and then the dairy - and if we are lucky, the show ring. Call me crazy, but anyone who has bred animals will know the rewarding feeling that I am talking about!” It was this passion for the dairy industry that inspired Ollie to become a Cows Create Careers volunteer in 2014 for Millicent High School, South Australia. Once a student participant, Ollie decided to share her enthusiasm for the industry by becoming an industry advocate who visits the school and shares industry knowledge with the students completing the program.

“I chose to become a Cows Create Careers industry advocate because I am young and I have a passion for the dairy industry that I want to share!” Ollie said. And it seems her previous experience as a sixteen-year-old program participant has provided Ollie with some handy insider knowledge on how to engage high school students. “One of the major keys is to know your audience: then you can connect, interact and have a good time,” she said. “We talk about calves, how most calves are conceived, touch on genetics and what is involved with artificial insemination (AI). I was able to take into class AI guns, semen straws and sheaths.”

However there are some topics that receive a mixed reaction in the classroom. “Talking about dairy reproduction has the students either pretty involved or grossed out!” The passionate young dairy farmer has aspirations to keep building her career in dairy – an industry that she loves and finds challenging.

“I love the challenges that we have to deal with. I enjoy being told that I have a target milk production, in calf rate, tonnage of feed to be grown etc. that have to be met. They are physical goals that are mostly achievable and there is no better feeling than when you can conquer these goals, or even better, pulverise them!” “I guess the thing that keeps me in the industry is probably like all dairy farmers: we love it!”

Classy Bulldog reaches 200

Michele Wichman clocked up 200 senior games with East Gambier in the final minor round and on Saturday, in game number 201, she was again pivotal in helping her C grade side through to a preliminary final. Michele started playing in 1996 and played in East’s B & C Grades until 2002, during which time she won an association best & fairest award. She took time away from te game to have a family nad returned in 2007 to continue to be an integral part of east;s B and C grade line-us. She was part of East’s premiership winning C grade team last season and won player of the match. Michele also has a swag of club best & fairests to her name. A hard running mid courter, Michele is an on court leader who is jsut as valuable at the defensiuve end of the court as she is with ball in hand. Michele has also taken on junior coaching roles at the club.

13 & Under A Last Thursday saw 52 bowlers out to contest the Fosters Foodland 2-4-2 competition at Millicent Bowling Club. The winning teams were Adrianna Ross and Rod Gibbs (30+2), Barry Stoddart and Ian Ross (30+2), Bill Fennell and John Scudds (30+2), Harold Briggs and Alby Cecotti (30+3), Ken Taylor and David Crase (31+2), Alan Strother and Peter Varcoe (31+3), Roz Varcoe and Rob Chambers (31+10), Garry Wilson and Herb Henderson (31+12), Frank Weber and Iain Campbell (31+14), Dick Vanderhuel and Carl Schapel (32+14). Mary Campbell and Peter Scanlon (33+7) finished in third place with Ray Thiele and Glenn Schapel (33+16) in second place and the winners for the day Ron Trewin and Marino Gandolfi (pictured above) returning an incredible score of 34+26. On Sunday, September 7, Mayor Peter Gandolfi will officially open the 2014-15 Millicent Bowling Club season. Names are required by 12.30pm for the afternoon’s play and games will get underway at 1pm.

All bowlers are asked to wear their club uniform and bring afternoon tea.

Windfall for junior sports fund

The Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Lakes has again provided a substantial donation of $3000 to the City of Mount Gambier Junior Sports Fund, handing ove the windfall last month.

Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Lakes’ Mark Teakle and SA Power Networks Fun Run chair Morris Dickins handed over the $3000 to City of Mount Gambier Junior Sports Assistance Fund presiding member Cr Andrew Lee. “I extend the continuing sincere thanks, appreciation and admiration of the City of Mount Gambier Junior Sports Fund Committee and its Member Organisations to the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Lakes for its most generous donation which will enable assistance to financially disadvantaged junior sportspeople,” Cr Lee said. “The Rotary Club’s continuing support for the Junior Sports Fund and its interest in our endeavours to provide meaningful assistance to our young sportspeople is very satisfying and is very much appreciated.

“The club’s very substantial donation of $3000 will again assist to provide support for families of young sportspeople of our district.”
