I have grown up with a mother who has a strong social conscience and she has shown me through her example that a woman can achieve so much,” said Elena. The other recipient, Segollene Kasole, also has high expectations and will undertake a Science degree at Flinders University with a focus on medical science building to a Masters in Optometry.“This grant will not only allow me to fulfill my own aspirations and dreams but is a gift to me that keeps giving. My hope, as a refugee is to give back to my community and prove to other refugees that they can accomplish their dream with a lot of determination and dedication,” said Segollene. Mim Ingham was an active member of Soroptimist International during the 1980s and early 1990s and a dedicated teacher who saw the need for student financial assistance in starting training or further study on leaving secondary schooling. “After Mim’s death in 1992 members named the grant in her honour recognising

her commitment to education. Our early intention of providing assistance when financial hardship prevents a student from continuing with her chosen career path has continued with over $69,000 awarded through our continual fundraising efforts,” said Margie Russon, newly appointed President of Soroptimist International Mount Gambier. Over dinner both girls acknowledged the incredible work of members and spoke of the difference each has made to the lives of women and girls throughout the world. “I continue to be astounded by the

strength and dedication of our young people and their desire to contribute to their communities’ future. I wish both Elena and Segollene all the best with their future studies,” said Margie.

Wattle Range community groups receive windfall A broad range of local community projects will benefit from funds awarded in the second round of Wattle Range Council’s Community Grants Program for 2014/15. Council granted more than $27,000 to 17 separate community and sporting groups at its meeting held this month. Mayor Peter Gandolfi was impressed by the volume and quality of applications for the grants programs. “It is great to see so many worthy projects and events happening out in our local community.” Mr Gandolfi said. “The financial assistance grants programs are an important way for council to support these small community and sporting groups and ensure they continue to grow”. LOCAL Jam packed 2015 arts program unveiled Whether it’s an art exhibition, a musical performance, a comedy show or an art house movie, the 2015 Country Arts SA Regional Guide has the details. The new look guide was launched last Thursday and is the first fully collaboratively guide with the Riddoch

Art Gallery, Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre and all venues in the Limestone Coast included in the comprehensive guide of all the region’s artistic activity. Workshops are also included. Riddoch Art Gallery director Simon Klose and Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre manager Frank Morello, launched the guide at a morning tea before the theatre held a more comprehensive wrap of their 2015 program in the evening.

Simon Klose said he was pleased with the diversity of the 2015 program the premier regional gallery. “The Riddoch Art Gallery is about people,” Mr Klose said. “We want to connect to you and your community – your family, your friends and visitors to Mount Gambier. “ He said the gallery wanted to be a place for everyone to enjoy. “It’s a place with lots of opportunity for thoughts, experiences, other cultures, expanding the cultures we know about through firsthand experience, through actual art works and not just the internet Google experience,” Mr Klose said. “There will be education programs and opportunities to meet artists.” The Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre has always launched a guide featuring the Country Arts SA season and Mr Morello was thrilled with the new look guide that unveiled new Country Arts SA branding as well as the more comprehensive nature of the publication. “It sheds light on the entire range of activities of Country Arts SA,” he said. “There are new engagement opportunities and also more information for artists.” There is funding and grant opportunities outlined in the guide, which is also the unveiling of the new corporate branding of Country Arts SA, complete with new colour scheme and logo. Country Arts CEO Steve Saffell was pelased with the 2015 program and grateful for what is now 18 years of support from SA Power Networks as Country Arts SA’s principal corporate partner. Mr Morello also revealed

updates to the guide will also be provided throughout the year as new events are added to the arts venues around the region. The addition of the region’s film society Reels to the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre program and the return of the Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestras for a third season were two of the features Mr Morello highlighted. “The guide will be a lovely addition to your coffee table,” he

OUT & ABOUT Portland Botanic Gardens Exhibition HISTORY HOUSE, PORTLAND Until March 15 Opening in 1859, the Portland Botanic Gardens are one of the oldest in the state and are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. This display looks at various aspects of the gardens over the last 150 years including views of the gardens; the Curator’s cottage; the islands and bridges at the rear of the garden’s reserve; sports in the gardens; and the Portland lifeboat which was displayed in the gardens for over 70 years. Also included is a small collection of vintage souvenirs showing images of the gardens and cottage, and a collection of 19th century ephemera documenting works in the gardens. Admission fee applies. History House is open daily 10am-12noon, 1pm-4pm except Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Ride for a cause A long motorcycle ride around our district ending up with a temporary lock up at the Old Mount Gambier Gaol is planned for this Saturday.

Bikers from across South Australia will converge on Mount Gambier for a day of fun exploring the many natural attractions found in and around Mount Gambier and along our rugged coastline. “It is well worth the trip as riders will get a chance to see the countryside riding from Mount Gambier to Kongorong, back to the Bellum then onto Port MacDonnell before heading to Nelson and back through Winnup arriving in Mount Gambier around tea time,” said Margaret Russon, President of Soroptimist International Mount Gambier. Ride for Soroptimist International will raise funds for local projects and while you will ride at your own risk every effort has been made to entertain participants throughout the day kicking off at 10.30am from the Lady Nelson Visitor Information Centre. Soroptimist International is committed to a world where women and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in

creating strong, peaceful communities worldwide. “While we can’t predict the weather at this time this stretch of road can also be very windy and cold and wet, especially in winter,” Margaret said. “Road surfaces have many windy turns but are generally good and towns are regularly spaced along the route.”

COLLECTED STUPIDITY It’s not berry good news... by Robbie Tansel The last couple of weeks have confirmed everything that I’ve been trying to say for the last decade. All this healthy eating and living fad is not good for us as humans. Obviously what has brought this on has been the people who have contracted hepatitis from eating berries.

People would have us believe that eating berries is good for us and in some way will benefit our health. In actual fact what we’ve found is that eating berries can lead to an awful disease. I think there is very definitely some sort of a conspiracy going on with the fruit and vegetable growers trying to build their business by convincing us that their food is beneficial to humans.

They are ridiculous and silly and we need to start standing up to them. We’ve been working diligently over the last few decades developing wonderful chemicals to enhance our lives. We don’t need to eat primitive plants anymore because we have produced chemically based food made up mainly of things that are identified by numbers rather than words. We’ve worked for centuries to separate us from the animals, the creatures that still foolishly munch on vegetation. But we’ve evolved. We’ve got pizza and frozen chips and chocolate. We don’t need to be eating berries. I’ve even done a little research and discovered that eating supposedly “healthy” food can lead to horrific side effects. As I understand it eating carrots gives you extra strong eye sight. That’s not natural. Your eyes are meant to deteriorate as you age so that you don’t realise how fat and ugly you’ve gotten when you look in the mirror in the morning. Likewise, eating crusts which my

mother always indicated was good and healthy actually gives you curly hair. Curly hair! There’s a negative side effect if I’ve ever heard one. I’m pretty sure my own mini health kick is a walking talking example of why eating better and exercising is actually not good for you. I have cut back on the publicised fatty unhealthy foods and increased my exercise. I have been sick more than usual.

I am grumpier than usual. I have no energy. But that’s not even the worst of the results of my healthy lifestyle. I’ve become one of those people who always wants to talk about how far they’ve run and how long it took them. In fact I try to turn almost every conversation I have to my jogging statistics. I have become an insufferable bore.

That’s still not even the worst of it though. I’m starting to enjoy exercise. Clearly it is having an adverse effect on my brain. Here is another way I know it is affecting my brain. Ordinarily I would have written an article this week telling you how ridiculous the rise of the selfie stick is. For those who don’t know what a selfie stick is, it’s a stick you buy to attach your camera or phone to. You then hold the stick out in front of you to take a photo of you and whatever else you want to fit in the photo. Instead of pointing out how stupid they are, my main feeling about selfie sticks at the moment is how great they would be for Tyrannosaurus rexes. With those impractically short arms and giant heads, Tyrannosaurus rexes must have difficulty taking selfies. How on earth would they be able to hold the camera far enough away to fit them and their dinosaur friends in the frame? Problem solved with the selfie stick.

LOCAL Preparations well underway for Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival The 2015 Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival – a highlight of South Australia’s Festival calendar – will be held from Thursday, May 21, to Sunday, May 24. The Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival a highly anticipated event on the regional arts festival calendar,

and is the only festival of its type in the Limestone Coast. It attracts audiences from across South Australia and interstate and offers a variety of exhibitions, workshops, theatre productions and musical events catering to a wide audience. The committee has spent considerable time creating a new look website, complete with images from past festivals, details on how to become a sponsor, and the full program of events.

Committee member and graphic designer Sally McDonald said it was designed to be more user friendly for visitors and the community to keep up to date with the festival. “Visitors to the website are invited to join up to receive newsletters on the festival, or become a ‘Friend of the Festival’, whilst looking at previous winners of the keynote event, the John Shaw Neilson competition and other images from

Sunday’s Family Show will feature Jeff Achtem from Bunk Puppets (pictured) presenting his award winning shadow puppet show titled ‘Sticks Stone Broken Bones’ –which turns household junk into surreal live cartoons. It has been a sell-out sensation at theatres and festivals throughout the world, has recently returned from a successful run in New York, will be appearing at Adelaide Fringe and has won a number of Fringe awards. On Sunday, May 24, Penola’s historic Petticoat Lane will offer a “Stroll Down the Lane” event including a display of vintage cars, an antique stall and pop up shops, coffee van, food and music.

ANZAC day floral tribute in the spotlight An annual floral display will be constructed as part of the Australian Centenary commemoration activities in the lead up to ANZAC Day in Portland this year. In addition, an historical photography exhibition will be on display at the Portland Arts Centre, along with a large community gunfire breakfast to be held following the dawn service on ANZAC Day morning. Since its humble beginning in 1935 of seventy five white crosses and wreaths, Portland RSL Sub Branch’s annual ANZAC Day floral display has grown to become a true community event, and one that is unique in Australia. “2015 marks the 80th year that we have been creating this wonderful masterpiece of floral prowess by local and visiting volunteers,” said Portland RSL Sub Branch President David Cleary. The floral motif for the 2015 will be depicting Simpson and his donkey, which will be created using dahlias, marigolds and salvia. Along with the floral display which is located on the lawn surrounding the cenotaph, many other volunteers spend a full day making floral wreaths. Six hundred plus crosses form the majority of the display and represent deceased ex-service men and women from the district, with the word ANZAC representing those who paid the supreme sacrifice in WW1 and WW11. “All flowers and foliage used in the display and wreaths are donated by the Portland Botanic Gardens, local rose grower Treloar Roses, as well numerous private gardens around town,” said David. ANZAC Day commemorations in Portland will commence with a dawn service at 6.35am at the memorial triangle, followed by a community gunfire breakfast, including music from Portland’s Citizens Brass Band. The main service will commence at 10.30am, with four Light horsemen and ‘Simpson and his Donkey’ leading the parade. Proceedings will also include an address by special guest speaker Bryan Smith OAM. The floral layout will be in place for around five to six days, and visitors are encouraged to take time to wander through the display to view it up close. The photography exhibition which has been sponsored by the Glenelg Shire Council and the Andrew Jack Charitable Trust will be open to the public for the month of April including ANZAC Day afternoon.

NEW HEALTH CHIEF New Terang & Mortlake Health Service Chief Executive Julia Ogdin has arrived at an exciting time as the service prepares to undergo a major refurbishment.

Ms Ogdin hopes to take the local community on the journey as the $1.2 million refurbishment of the Terang Hospital and Mount View Aged Care Facility improves comfort, safety and privacy for patients and residents.

The work is expected to start in May and be completed by early 2016 and will be guided by new user and project control groups. “It’s great to have projects to hit the ground running with,” Ms Ogdin said. “I am very passionate about rural health and see this refurbishment as part of our role in working towards a healthier community,” she said. Ms Ogdin described engaging with the community as one of her main priorities.

“I want to be a visible presence in the town and be involved in community events and as a health service we want a strong focus on involving the local community,” she said. “The health service aims to provide more services and allied health initiatives in the community and I want to listen to what people would like and help to implement those changes. “The user and project control groups will ensure staff, residents and patients who work live and are treated here have the opportunity to comment on what they like and want in the design of our refurbished building.” Ms Ogdin has worked in the health field since 2003. She initially trained as a speech pathologist and has since achieved a Graduate Certificate in Quality Management and a Masters in International Health Management.

For the past six years she has managed the primary care department of the East Grampians Health Service in Ararat where she oversaw a number of allied health programs. This is her first appointment as a hospital CEO. “I saw the position as a wonderful opportunity to engage with the Terang and Mortlake communities and to take on the next challenge in my career,” she said. Living on a family sheep farm at Moyston, Ms Ogdin said she was passionate about rural health. “Our aim is to help local people keep as healthy as possible for as long as possible,” she said.

A large bedroom with full-height built in wardobes offers plenty of storage space. There is a separate bathroom with shower adjacent to the bedroom. A separate laundry leads to the carport and the outdoor living area is accessed from either the carport or the lounge room sliding doors. The unit comes complete with floor coverings, curtains and a built in kitchen. The units are of brick or block construction at ground level which enables easy access. Tenison Woods College break 36 year drought in the pool

Tenison Woods College swimmers have ended a 36 year drought in the pool after returning from the recent SESSSA Interschool Swimming Carnival with the title trophy in hand, washing away the regional competition with a resounding 54 point victory. After four years of finishing the bridesmaid, the 33-member Tenison Woods College squad finally walked away with the win, fending off previous title-holder Bordertown High School who had held the mantel for the past 11 years. Final standings for the day were as follows: Tenison Woods College 429; Bordertown High School 375; Mount Gambier High School 279; Grant High School 266; and Combined Schools (Millicent High School, St Martin’s Lutheran College, Penola High School and Naracoorte High School) 199. In addition to winning the overall day, Tenison Woods College also secured wins in the Under 14, Under 15 and Open (tied with Bordertown) age group divisions. Tenison Woods College sports coordinator Ciaran Buckley said it was a very special achievement for all swimmers, with it being the first time the title had returned to the College since 1979. He said in a day where the school’s swimmers ruled the pool some of the outstanding efforts from the team included 42 first placings in 64 races; nine first placings in 12 relays; 16 individual athletes securing a first place; and the girls team winning 30 out of 32 races. In addition to congratulating the entire team, Mr Buckley also paid tribute to swimmers, Olivia Dukalskis, Emily Gazzard and James Gazzard who secured four first places and Jade Opie, Laura Gazzard and Jaime Spicer who won three first places Mr Buckley said the win was an outstanding achievement for the College and its school community. “I congratulate the swimming squad for their dedication, enthusiasm and desire to achieve their personal best,” Mr Buckley

said. “The overall achievements from Tenison Woods College athletes are a testament to their hard work, spirit and unwavering belief in each other.” The Tenison Woods College students will now be looking to emulate their local success when they compete at the South Australian Co-Educational Secondary Schools Swimming Carnival in Adelaide this Thursday.

Shingokan Karate claimed five medals from its three competitors at the Karate SA 2015 Kyu Grade & Novice Championships in Adelaide earlier this month. Zachery McNally-Hanlen performed exceptionally well in his first competition, gaining a silver medal in 12-13 yrs (10th-6th Kyu) boys kata and a gold medal in 12 -13 yrs (10th-6th Kyu) boys kumite. Zac scored two technically difficult head kicks each earning three points, winning his finals bout convincingly, 9-2. Jett Pitson performed very well in his first competition gaining fourth place in 10 -11 yrs (10th-6th Kyu) boys kumite. Jett won his first fight but was narrowly defeated in his second. He is now very keen to compete at the upcoming State Titles. Madeleine Potter competed in girls 14 - 15 yrs kata and kumite (5th-1st Kyu); demonstrating a high quality performance qualifying her way through to the finals winning gold medals in both events. Madeleine was invited by Australian national coach Matt Johnson to compete in the Under 18 yrs girls Open kumite (5th-1st Kyu), where she qualified through to the final gaining a silver medal for her effort. Shingokan Karate Mount Gambier is currently utilising the skills of two senior black belt women, running a very popular beginners’ courses for young children. The “Mini Ninja ” class runs every Saturday morning at 9am at our dedicated facility at 27 Percy Street. Double hundred for talented teenager South Gambier’s Jack Capewell skippered his club’s Cox Bros team for this round and certainly made an impact. Usually a Barber Shield player, Capewell will probably not be given special permission again to play in the club’s second side given he secured a double century in the weekend’s oppressive heat. Believed to be the first double hundred in the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association this century, Capewell (pictured) scored 27 fours and cleared the boundary six times on his way to 213.

Capewell’s overshadowed some other impressive performances from the weekend with Crouch Shield player Matthew Fatchen securing 123 for Centrals in their second innings, while in Sunday’s O’Donoghue Shield semi final, Lachlan Jones helped guide his team to a grand final berth, taking 5/2. Alex Hentschke also did all he could to give Kongorong an outright victory that could have given them a shot at the Barber Shield finals but his 5/10 from 12 overs was not enough.

Young softballers fall at final hurdle A talented group of Mount Gambier softballers represented the city with distinction at the weekend at the 2015 Junior State Softball Championships at Mount Barker. The team went through the minor rounds undefeated and then advanced to the finals with a hard fought victory over Pt Pirie. The girls played well in the medal decider but were defeated in the last dig of the medal final 1-2 by the city based Sturt Falcons (1). Felicity Walker was coach of the well performed group and we’ll get her thoughts on the championship in the following edition of Lifestyle1.

A hot weekend greeted the record number of players for the 19th Annual “Coonawarra Vignerons Classic Clash” Petanque Tournament held over the weekend of February 14 & 15, which again was hailed a huge success by all who attended. The tournament provided some fierce interstate rivalry between South Australian, Victorian, New South Wales and Tasmanian teams over the two days of competition. This event, run by the Coonawarra Petanque Club, has becoming recognised as one of the biggest and best tournaments in Australia. With the help of the Coonawarra Vignerons Association and other local sponsors, teams vied for more than $6000 in cash and prizes, and championship honours. The extremely successful weekend had 200 players entered, with a record 65 teams in the competition, creating a great atmosphere and some spirited clashes.

Coonawarra Petanque Club president Guy Detot said that he is still amazed that people travel such a long distance to come is this competition, and added it was also good to see several of our local sponsors had entered teams for the tournament this year. On Saturday, teams played six qualifying rounds to determine the best teams to go into the “Top 16” for the Sunday competition.

The local player Jean-Paul Bouyer and two Melbourne team mates handled the heat well and finished in first place, winning all six games and only losing eight points for the day. Other local teams that played well, were Guy Detot, Andrew Jackman, Louis Oltarczy, and Mal Redman, Alistair Rowland, Tony Gleeson, finishing fifth and eighth respectively in the top 16 teams. On Sunday, the final rounds of the tournament were dominated by the Victorian Clubs this year, but the Adelaide team of Alexi Alexi, Arwed Turon and George Lainis, who only just scraped into the top 16, found spectacular form to go through to the grand final. Motor Popular machinery rally returns to Naracoorte The 5th Pist’n’Broke Machinery Rally is back again in March at the Naracoorte Showgrounds.

The last time it was held was in October 2013 and it proved to be the wrong time of the year as it clashed with harvesting and local South East shows. This year’s dates are March 14 and 15.

Held by The Naracoorte Historic Vehicle Club this rally is enjoyed by enthusiasts from all over South Australia and parts of Victoria. Displays will include tractors, stationary engines and vintage and veteran motor vehicles. A tractor trek will be held Saturday afternoon and is organised by Dean Seigert and is well supported.

Naturally the visiting ladies will be looked after by the Cartwright Pavilion being filled with market stalls. The monthly market usually held at the club’s grounds will be transferred to the Rally for March only. Patrons will be well fed by the Angling Club who are in charge of catering on the day. The club has been well supported by local business houses and it is much appreciated. “We have been coming to Coonawarra for many years, it’s such a great tournament, it’s well run and really enjoyable to play in. The number of people that come along show how popular the weekend has become,” said Alexi Alexi, captain of the winning team. A good consistent standard of play was continued by the local players of Jean-Paul Bouyer’s team, Guy Detot, Andrew Jackman, Louis Oltarczy, and Mal Redman, Alistair Rowland, Tony Gleeson, finishing 12th ,13th and 14th overall.

“The whole weekend has been beautiful and this was the best Grand Final we have had. The large crowd and tight games created a truly special occasion,” said Detot. “The weekend has been tremendous for the whole region, and next year being our 20th anniversary of the tournament, it could be even bigger again.”
