t is the end of an era in Mount Gambier as respected dentist Dr Ian Ridley, packs away his drill, his mirror and his face mask for the last time and calls it a day. It is not often a dentist is called popular or much loved, but Dr Ridley has managed to make one of the most dreaded visits anyone makes a good experience. As a popular and highly skilled practitioner, he has been in practice in Mount Gambier at the Ferrers Dental Surgery since 1977. Dr Ridley has cared for many families and generations within those families and in Mount Gambier he has been the only dentist local residents have ever had.

Dr Ridley has worked with various partners over the years, including Drs Fred Vaskas, Doug Castle, Peter

Reed and John Schaefer. The staff and Dr Ridley’s many patients are very sad to see him go but wish him well in his retirement.

Ferrers Dental Surgery will continue serving the Mount Gambier community with current practitioners Drs Helen Heaver, Ting Ting Chen, Isabel Holmes and Lauren Gill. The practice is also pleased to announce that another local, Dr James Waters, will soon be joining the team.

More immediate is the merger of Hawkins Dental with Ferrers Dental. Hawkins’ Dr Catherine Dunn is looking to free up more time for her family, and the merger has presented her with this opportunity

visit to the dentist isn’t often at the top of the list of any child, and while Ian Ridley didn’t necessarily look forward to the six monthly check up his parents took him to as a child, he does remember his dentist, and Loxton’s Dr Ian McInnes is the reason he, too, became a dentist. “He was informative and interesting,” Dr Ridley said.

It was 1974 that Ian Ridley officially graduated and started life as a dentist and it is a 41 year career he has truly loved. “I’ve had excellent colleagues all the way through and that’s a big thing,” he said. Having lived in the Riverland and Kangaroo Island in his early years, Dr Ridley believes he chose Mount Gambier because he liked living in a regional centre. “We came to Mount Gambier originally for a short time, we thought two or three years,” he said. “We’ve had a wonderful life here and there was no reason to leave.” His dentistry started with the government before the Ferrers Dental opportunity came up. ‘I took it and I’ve never regretted it,” he said. He became a partner at the practice in August 1980, taking over from Fred Vaskas and joining forces with Doug Castle and Peter Reed.

He has seen some dramatic changes over the years to the industry he loves, citing the evolution of implant dentistry, the growth of cosmetic work and the impact of computers. “It’s the reason you have to keep up your post graduate education,” he said.

In retirement Dr Ridley has offered his services to tutor students at Adelaide University. Over the years at Ferrers, Dr Ridley has overseen a number of new graduates become well rounded practitioners. It’s been a beneficial two way street with helping graduates transform their theoretical knowledge into practical skills.

As for officially retiring on April 24, although he will still be around from time to time on a part time basis, Dr Ridley admits it was a tough call. “It was not an easy decision but it was an appropriate one for the time,” he said. He is excited about the next chapter for the practice as it joins forces with Dr Catherine Dunn at its new James Street premises.”It’s a very exciting development for Mount Gambier.”

Dr Dunn is set to continue in a part time capacity and Dr Ting Ting Chen, from Ferrers, will be working out of Hawkins to assist with that continuity of care.

The entire Ferrers/Hawkins team is looking forward to the new surgery on James Street, which will be opening later this year. This new practice will be called Limestone Coast Dental. It will see the merging of Ferrers Dental Surgery and Hawkins Dental Practice. Until the new surgery is ready for occupation, it will be a case of business as usual at both practices. The new building will have up to 10 treatment rooms with state-of-the-art equipment and amenities.

ike Dr Ridley, Dr Dunn also knew she wanted to be a dentist from quite a young age, at least her father thought it would be a good option. “When I was 13, dad said I should be a dentist and I said no that’s ‘yuck’,” Dr Dunn said. But she was good at science at school and loved working with her hands. “I was always doing knitting and embroidery and making my brother’s models,” she said. Her father wanted her to have a profession so when you put everything together in the end she came up with dentistry. “it was either that or a manufacturing jeweller and I really wasn’t arty enough,” she said. Her father took her to visit a dental hospital and when she was shown around, she knew it was for her. “”I thought I would fit in here, these people are like me.”

Dr Dunn ended up in the South east after marrying a Penola boy and she has been in business here since 1997. “It’s a people job,” she said. “People really take you into their confidence. They come here with pain and go out hopefully fixed. It’s not always that simple but that’s how it works.” Dr Dunn loves the fact she has worked with some patients and their families for so long now, taking care of their dental health from when they are children right through until they start having their own.

She also enjoys the technical side of the job – being presented with a challenge and solving it for a patient.

Dr Dunn has started mentoring 5th year dental students at the Mt Gambier Hospital on Wednesday afternoons and that’s a new role she loves. “They know a lot of theory and it’s about learning how it all goes together,” she said. “And I learn a lot from them.”

For Dr Dunn, the opportunity to have Dr Helen Heaver buy her business and merge it into the new Limestone Coast Dental came at the perfect time. She was looking to cut back her consulting time, the Hawkins Clinic doctors were interested in reclaiming the space but she also wanted to ensure appropriate continuity of care for her patients. “I have two grand children in Melbourne I’d like to see more of and there comes a time for everybody when they have to re-evaluate their priorities,” she said. “I really do care about my patients and what happens to them and I’ve known Helen for a long time, she’s the best credentialed dentist in the town so if I was going to sell the business to someone I would want it to be someone like her.”

COLLECTED STUPIDITY It’s torture... by Robbie Tansel Many of my regular readers will know that about three years ago my life changed when little baby Shaquille arrived in my life. Three years on I’m not sure if the change has been a positive or a negative. There are definitely days when it’s great and there are plenty of days when it is not so great. Whilst I can’t make a decision regarding whether it is positive or negative, I have no doubt that the last three years has certainly been a massive learning experience. Every day I learn a little bit more about how inadequate I am as a father and as a human in general. But I have learnt plenty. One thing that fatherhood has taught me is effective torture techniques and a variety of ways to force people to do what I want them to do. I am convinced that anyone who survives parenthood will develop the necessary skills to work in interrogation with terrorist suspects. Most parents could be sent to Guantanamo Bay with a variety of strategies to make those terrorists break. Our skills would probably be useful in hostage situations as well, partly because a parent develops such good negotiation skills and partly because we can empathise with the experience of being held hostage by someone who is unpredictable and completely unreasonable. Let me share some of the advanced manipulation techniques that I have developed as a parent. The first technique that I think would be highly effective for torturing terrorists that I wanted to extract information from would be to wash their hair. Hair washing night in the Tansel house involves long periods of excruciating cries of pain. The bargaining starts when the shampoo is first pulled out of the cupboard. Immediately on sighting the devilish bottle Shaquille will start pleading for me

to put it away. Being a merciless monster I will gleefully continue with my plan and start wetting his hair. His hysteria will continue to build and he will start pleading for me to save it for the next night. I of course will refuse and will uncap the bottle, quite possibly taking pleasure in the power I am wielding. This is when the true torture takes place as I squirt the shampoo onto his head and start lathering it into his hair. Any parent knows what happens next. “It’s in my eyes!” You will never see a human being acting more frantic than a child in a bath tub with shampoo in their eyes. Tell me you can’t imagine the possibilities of using this technique to get information out of insurgents. “It’s in my eyes! I’ll talk! Just rinse it out or put a flannel over my eyes!” Picture that spoken in an Arnold Schwarzenegger accent. Actually there probably haven’t been too many Austrian terrorists.

Another possible torture technique is refusing to give the terrorist any dessert until they’ve eaten their vegetables.

This one certainly gets results from the little terrorist in our house. Mind you, the vegetable situation has been quite an ongoing issue in Tanselvania. We went through about 12 months of listening to a toddler screaming about how he shouldn’t have to eat vegetables. He just wants marshmallows. Phase two of the torture technique involved a pea being held on a shaking fork in front of the mouth, occasionally licked and sometimes eventually being shoved into the gob. The battle wasn’t finished at this point though. A single pea took so long to be swallowed that I actually counted how many times it had to be chewed before an attempt could be made to force it down.

After about a year and a half, we have finally broken him recently and he will put a few peas on a fork, place them in his mouth and then eat them without a fuss. Any person who can convince a child to eat vegetables will have no problems getting a terrorist to reveal the location of their base and who is funding the operation. LOCAL Mount High goes back to back Mount Gambier High School headed to the 2015 Annual SESSSA Interschool Athletics Carnival at Naracoorte High School late last month as titleholders and emerged as champions yet again with another narrow victory. It was the 71st time the event has been held and after defeating Bordertown High School by only 1.5 points in 2014, the Mount High contingent

knew it would be another tough competition. Seventy-one students represented the school on the day, with the team gaining 26 first places, 18 seconds, and 20 thirds out of 96 individual events. A number of students were successful in more than one event. In the girls, Shylah Fosdike (Under 14 100m, Hurdles, 200m), Isabel Redemski (Under 15 Triple Jump, 100m, 200m), Darcie Kuhl (Under 15 Discus, Shot Put) and Emily Pietsch (Under 16 Triple Jump, Long Jump) all won multiple events, whilst Brodie Parsons (Under 15 1500m, 800m, 400m) and Wade Chant (Under 16 Discus, Javelin) did likewise in the boys competition. Tilah Buckingham (Under 15 Girls Javelin) and Dylan Ridding (Open Boys Discus) set new records in their respective events. Throughout the day, scores were very close with Mount Gambier High School holding a small lead. Prior to the relays commencing, Mount Gambier High School held a narrow margin of 7 points over Tenison Woods College. Of the eight races, Mount Gambier High School managed to win all four female races (Under 14, Under 15, Under 16 and Open), whilst the Under 15 Boys came second.

The Under 16 Girls and Boys won their combined age group shield. Bordertown High School finished in third on 589.5 points, Tenison Woods College was second with 610.5 and Mount Gambier High School was just ahead with 620 points to win the overall shield by 9.5 points.The squad is now scheduled to travel to Adelaide to compete in the A2 SSSSA Track and Field Championships at SANTOS Stadium on April 9.

They say time flies when you’re having fun and for Kelly Waters, the past decade has flown. It was on April 5, 2005, that she took a bold step into the unknown, taking over iconic Mount Gambier fashion outlet Mangos and developing it into her own success story. The former administrator and retail assistant was looking for a new challenge and taking over the store, which celebrates 21 years in business this year, seemed like the right fit. “I was looking for a new challenge and an opportunity to work for myself and to combine both sets of skills,” Kelly said. “I wanted the challenge of running a business and Mangos was on the market at the time I started looking – I have loved every minute, learning on the job and really developing a love for fashion.” For Kelly, it has been all about building relationships, with her customers first and foremost, and with suppliers. “I have made friendships, both professional and personal,” she said. “You are dressing people and what I love is making them feel good about themselves – no matter what their size, shape or budget, you want them to leave feeling good.” Kelly is a great believer that you get out of a business what you are prepared to put in. “If you work hard, you get the rewards,” she said. And seeing how the store has grown and its reputation has been enhanced has been reward in itself for Kelly. She has also learnt that you have to embrace the changing face of retail and 18 months ago she launched an online store and a Facebook page to further expand her clientele. “People are time poor so even my regulars like to be able to sit at home and look on their iPad and see what’s coming into the store,” Kelly said. “They can come and collect it and it’s just another service we offer.” She also strongly believes that face to face service and the chance to touch and feel the fabrics will never completely die. “But you have to embrace change, shoppers seem to be more savvy,” Kelly said. The online presence has seen Kelly shipping clothes interstate and internationally and sees it very much as complementing her business, not replacing the personal service offered in store. “But the next generation are shopping online and we have to accept that if we want their business,” she said. Expanding the bridal and debutante range has also been a priority since establishing the online presence and Kelly believes her range is extensive, especially for a regional area. “We can offer different sizes, colours and styles and we can order in just about anything a bride is looking for to dress her bridesmaids,” she said. The debutante range is also just getting off the ground with some exquisite debutante dresses on offer. The usual formal wear is also as diverse and on trend as ever, as is the entire range of clothing at Mangos, and Kelly has just returned from a buying trip. “It’s fun seeing what’s coming out and then picturing your clientele and what will work for them and the shop,” she said, “I have loved everything I have ever bought – I might not wear it but I envision the clients it will work for and I can honestly say I have never bought anything I didn’t like.” With the local country racing cup season in full swing, Kelly has postponed any official 10th birthday celebrations until later in the

year but the decade milestone will be marked with a special celebration.

Adrian Hurst proposed to Jasmine Johncock on the third anniversary of the day they met. Dinner had been arranged for that August 2013 night and Adrian surprised Jasmine with an arrangement from It’s a Celebration decorating the table, and photographer Marcus Jones there to capture the moment he proposed. The couple tied the knot on January 24 this year and decided to have a “first reveal” photo shoot prior to the ceremony where photographer Christy Radford, who the couple could not speak more highly of, captured Adrian seeing Jasmine in her dress for the first time in a secluded area at The Barn. “It was a special moment just for us and our bridal party,” Jasmine said. t c e f r e P match It was on March 7 that Michelle Lewis, daughter of Debra and Gordon Lewis, exchanged vows with Alex Moore, son of Sally and Dean Moore, in a ceremony at The Barn, followed by drinks in the garden and a reception at the same venue. “The reception had a touch of travel theme with ‘our favourite people sitting at our favourite places’ in the world,” Michelle said.Alex had proposed to Michelle at the Grand Canyon and had the ring crafted in New York. Alex’s best man was Brad Maney and his groomsmen were Simon Merrett, Sam Hill, Jason Jackson and Sam McPherson. Michelle was attended by maids of honour Brooke Williams and Fiona Scott and bridesmaids Kristin Moore, the groom’s sister, Rikki White and Ashlee Bowd. Courtney Mansell also did a reading. The couple is set to honeymoon at the end of June, heading to the Glastonbury Festival in London, Italy, a cricket test match in Cardiff and Dubai.

On Friday, February 20, Brie Vanderwaal and Jonathon Agnew were married at The Bookshop in Robe, SA. The intimate ceremony was held in the garden in front of 25 guests. Brie and Jonathon were joined by Brie’s sister Tyne Vanderwaal and friend Melissa Liddle together with Jonathon’s brothers Pete and Brad Agnew. The couple was married by celebrant Josephine Kerestes, who handcrafted a personal ceremony reflecting the couple’s love, friendship and commitment. “Our families, in particular our parents Gerda and Paul Vanderwaal and Deb and Chris Agnew together with our siblings are enormously important to us and we wanted to acknowledge them in our ceremony,� the newlyweds said. Jonathon’s sister Hayley Agnew prepared a reading for the couple. After the ceremony guests enjoyed drinks and cheese platters in the garden before moving inside The Bookshop for the reception. “It felt like a big dinner party with our families coming together with our closest friends to help us celebrate.�
