LOCAL Tour de Cure Coonawarra bound Extraordinary Australians and ex-pro cyclist Jens Voigt to battle through 1335 km to raise millions to fund cancer projects and this year’s tour takes in this region and the world famous Coonawarra.

Since 2007, leading Australian charity, Tour de Cure, has been riding to raise awareness and funds to support selected cancer prevention, research and support projects, which will help cure cancer for all of us. Over nine days, teams of riders, support crew and corporate partners will bring the ‘cure cancer’ awareness message to local communities from Adelaide to Melbourne and fundraise with them. The Signature Tour team this year will once again be joined by Tour de Cure board member and Channel Seven’s Sunrise presenter, Mark Beretta (pictured). Mark, a keen cyclist himself, has been committed to the organisation’s mission to cure cancer since 2007 and this year will be his sixth year riding as part of the Signature Tour team . “We are very proud of our amazing community of riders, corporate partners, supporters, volunteers and the thousands of donors who will make our 9th Signature Tour the most impactful ride to cure cancer yet,” Tour de Cure managing director Káti Jahromi said. At the Tour de Cure community lunch in Coonawarra on April 28, a $10,000 donation will be given to Camp Quality to assist in the funding of a Family Fun Day. This money will help Camp Quality support the children in Coonawarra who are suffering from cancer and provide them with a day of fun filled activities with their families and to meet others going through a similar journey. This is an opportunity to give the children a fun day to look forward to with much excitement.

His career achievements include winning the Critérium International five times, a number of one-week stage races, as well as two Tour de France stage victories. COLLECTED STUPIDITY It’s simple... by Robbie Tansel It’s funny how having children totally changes your outlook on life. You’ve spent thirty years working out and building your understanding of the world and then some primitive being enters your life and makes you see things in a way you never would have believed.

Without a doubt, Shaquille has been responsible for this sort of change in my life. His presence has fundamentally changed the way I look at the world.

Before you start thinking I’m getting all deep and meaningful let me explain. One of the big things that has changed is what constitutes a good day. In my younger days fun or a good time essentially revolved around indulgence of some kind. It could have been alcohol. If I was really lucky it might involve a young lady. Often it involved unhealthy food. And if it was a magical day it might involve all of the above.

On the weekend I experienced a similar feeling of euphoria on a couple of occasions. On one of these occasions I started my lawnmower on the first pull of the start cord. In my head I went, “Yes!” I was in a good mood for hours. A week later I was still telling people how I’d started my lawnmower on the first pull and it had set the tone for my whole day.

In the eyes of my friends with children I could see a look of understanding. They understand how little joy someone has in their life after children arrive.

To put it in perspective, before children I once lost my lawnmower for several months. It didn’t really bother me except there was a patch of grass in the corner of my backyard that was taller than me.

Eventually I decided I’d just get a pair of scissors and deal with it the old fashioned way. It was only after I cleared a couple of square metres of the grass that I found my lawnmower in the jungle I was clearing.

It’d started raining the last time I was mowing and I’d left the mower there when I’d run inside out of

the rain. The other moment of joy came on the weekend when I was weeding my garden. Once again weeding my garden was never something that brought joy pre-child.

I’m not even sure there was a garden pre-child. It’s only since Shaquille came along that I’ve suddenly decided I want nice soft weedless grass and flowers he can pick in the garden to give joyfully to his mother. Mind you he was quite happy picking the flowers off weeds for her.

My moment of joy came as I was sitting in the dirt in a garden bed that I had completely cleared of weeds.

There was a bizarre sense of satisfaction. To be honest it made me a little uncomfortable. Another episode of unusual joy came this week as I prepared for a trip away with Donna and Shaquille. I packed the million things we now travel with into the boot of my car and they all fit neatly in like a jigsaw. Talk about a feeling of euphoria. It doesn’t get much better than that these days. I’ll give you one more example of how the little parasite has changed my outlook. Shaquille thinks that Port Mac is the best place in the world. It doesn’t matter if it’s a typical Port Mac summer day (-4 degrees, howling southerly wind direct from Antarctica and enough rain to get you thinking about whether it’s time you started researching ark building techniques). He will still paddle in the ocean, collect shells, build some sand castles and tell you he’s had the best day ever at the end of it. The Mount Gambier and Portland Libraries are having author’s events this week with Dave, as he tells of his deeply personal journey. Both libraries have scheduled this book and author to coincide with ANZAC Day. It is a perfect example of the history of war and Morgan’s experiences. My Vietnam War – Scarred Forever is a novel recommended for all ages. Dave makes you feel the true emotion of what it would have been like to have gone to war at his young age, through his gripping experience, being naive and cope. This novel is a touching story of Dave Morgan’s experience that no on should ever have to go through ever at the age of 20 or even any age. During his service he had a very close relationship with his mother and would send her letters from Vietnam tracking the days and the events. When his mother passed away Dave found all the letters he had sent her carefully numbered and in order, those letters helped him get inspired and developed this novel during his own personal journey. As a result of his journey he now has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (a.k.a PTSD). Morgan’s quote ‘The war never ended for me’ just goes to show how his PTSD how his journey has affected his life. Dave Morgan has only written one other book, Ice Journey which leads on from Vietnam.

Many of those who go to war and survive are scarred forever. Dave still writes but is also a speaker now, so head down to the Portland Library on Wednesday at 10.30am or at the Mount Gambier Library at 7pm on April 23. This is a FREE community event with bookings required.

LOCAL Young artists on show for Youth Week Students from Allendale East Area School had the pleasure of unveiling their own art work at a launch at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex erlier this month as part of National Youth Week 2015 celebrations. Twelve Year 9 students have spent the last five weeks designing and painting the three art works. The students were tasked with producing the three pieces around this year’s National Youth Week theme “It Starts With Us”. Two of the pieces depict how young people feel about living in Port MacDonnell, and the third piece presents a very strong anti-bullying message. “The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience of designing and painting the three pieces.

They worked in teams of four to brain storm their ideas and come up with the final designs. The school and students are very proud of their achievements and excited their work will be on display on the outside wall of the Complex near the Youth Area” said art Ttacher Sarah Stratford. “We are very pleased to have had

the opportunity to work with local students and given them an opportunity to showcase their artistic talent and social conscience,” Grant District Council’s Judy Goodman .

South East volunteers keen to keep the region clean Friends of Parks, Coastcare, Field Naturalists, Progress Associations, 4WD Clubs, Scouts, the Mount Gambier Migrant Resource Centre and Natural Resources South East partnered to remove more than 2000kg of litter from fifteen coast and reserve locations on Clean Up Australia Day. Two hundred and fifty volunteers covered more than 25km of beach and thousands of square metres of walking trails, public areas and campgrounds in conservation parks. Natural Resources South East volunteer coordinator Natalie Misic said volunteers in the South East region more than doubled the clean-up effort of last year with a fourfold increase in volunteer numbers.

“From Parnka Point and Coonalpyn in the north of the region, to Flinty Point in the south, there was a fantastic and committed volunteer effort to clean up beaches, parks and reserves,” Ms Misic said. ”Coastal sites like

Butcher Gap Conservation Park and Geltwood Beach in Canunda National Park were littered with fishing debris and waste left behind by visitors. “Some sites showed evidence of deliberate dumping, including kitchen appliances and cabinets, broken furniture, tyres and a toilet seat.” senior coast and marine officer Raelene Mibus applauded the efforts of the Limestone Coastwatchers who helped remove plastic items that would otherwise stay in coastal systems indefinitely.

Millicent field naturalists site coordinator Peter Johns took the time to carefully document what rubbish was cleaned up by his team. Catching tuna off the coast of Port MacDonnell is a past time than lures in many a fisherman and that’s one reason why the Port MacDonnell Offshore Angling Club annual Tuna & Sportfish Competition, held annually in May, has lasted more than three decades.

The 2015 fleet will mark the 34th time the week long competition has been held, with May 2 marking the opening day of competition. Organisers are expecting up to 50 boats to head out to battle nature and see what they can bring back to scale. The 2015 event is looking to be back to high numbers and eclipsing the 2014 mark of 160, with close to 300 anglers expected to compete - young and old, male and female, looking to snare one of the plethora of prizes on offer. And while competition is fierce and the swapping of the “one that got away” stories is prevalent, the social side of the week long tournament is as big a drawcard as the on water action. There is a fellowship dinner on Wednesday, May 6, with the presentation dinner on Saturday, May 9, with many mothers no doubt set for a delicious fresh seafood dinner on Mother’s Day, if their angling family have a successful week on the boat. “Both those dinners are at the footy club and they’re always a great night,” Clarke said. The good

news for those who haven’t made up their mind whether to throw a line is the tuna are biting – close to shore and further out and there are three pending records from female fishers in the past month, adding to the build up of excitement ahead of the May2-9 event. Bernadette pedlar has a pending world record for tune on a 3kg line, while Sharna McKinnon has two records pending at national level. And as the years have passed so has the variety the tournament presents and while the tuna is the showcase fish of the week, there are prizes across all categories. Species weighed in during the competition include Southern Blue Fin Tuna, Albacore, Snapper, Mulloway, Australian Salmon and Eagleray, plus a range of sharks, including Mako, Thresher, Tope and Gummy.

Accommodation is already at a premium with most beds already snapped up for the week long fish fest. “There is still really good support from the local fishers but we do get people from across the border, Adelaide and right across Australia,” Clarke said.

Tuna Brandade 2 large potatoes (about 500g) 1 cup (250ml) reduced-fat milk 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 eschalot, finely chopped 185g can good-quality tuna in springwater 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1/4 cup (60ml) olive oil 1/3 cup roughly chopped dill sprigs Crostini, rocket and nicoise olives, to serve

Method Peel and cut the potatoes into 1.5cm cubes. Place in a saucepan with milk, garlic and eschalot, then bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 8-10 minutes until the potato is soft. Remove the pan from heat, then drain tuna and add to potato mixture. Mash gently with a fork, leaving some larger chunks. Add the vinegar, oil and half the dill sprigs, then stir to combine. Serve the brandade on crostini, with the rocket, olives and remaining dill.

Method Preheat oven to 200°C/180°C fan-forced. Place a baking tray in oven. Use pastry to line base and sides of four 2cm-deep, 10cm (top), loose-based fluted flan tins, trimming to fit. Prick bases with a fork. Freeze for 15 minutes or until firm. Place tins on hot baking tray in oven. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until golden.

Remove from oven. Reduce oven temperature to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Combine tuna, corn and onion in a bowl. Divide tuna mixture into pastry cases.

Whisk eggs, cream and parmesan in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Pour over tuna mixture. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden and just set. Serve.

Local Sport WBNA - Cats & Demons play out another nailbiter It has become the typical script when South Gambier and Casterton Sandford go head to head - a tough arm wrestle that ends up with a narrow result and the weekend was no exception as South was in front when it counted most, when the final whistle went, 39-38. The two sides were never separated by more than four goals during the contest with scores locked away at the first change, the Cats two goals clear by half time and that margin was the same heading into the last. South Gambier coach Nicole Butler swung the changes every quarter in a bid to find a combination that could pull clear of the Cats and in the end it was the final quarter combination that won the quarter by three and was able to take the premiership points. South was the team out of the blocks early, taking a 4-0 lead and looking a class above but once the Cats settled, taking more care with possession in offence and playing a tighter style of defence all down the court, the match tightened up. The most impressive aspect of Casterton Sandford’s defensive work was the pressure on the centre pass – an area the Demons struggled with all day. Gaby Tomkins had an outstanding game as she shut down space for her offensive opponents and also picked up a number of interceptions. Young defenders Taylah Guthrie and Abbey Shannon were also at their tenacious best and were only really outclassed in the frenetic final quarter. The move of Alyssa Boylan into the centre at quarter time paid dividends for the Demons with her strong driving in offence and her ability to create turnovers through the mid court and at the defensive end. Boylan and Alyce Mourbey were the players that got the important, in the end, match winning touches in the final quarter, while youngster Jordyn Adams debuted in the final quarter at goal

keeper and impressed in her first 15 minutes, starting her A Grade career with two interceptions and her work over the shot pressured the Cats shooters into error. While at the other end, Chantelle Weir took control of the match, helped by the strong presence and clever delivery of coach Nicole Butler, who returned to the goal shooter position for the final quarter. Weir converted nine from 10 attempts, while Butler converted three from four in by far the Demons’ best quarter for shooting accuracy. In the end the match stats did tell the story – both sides had 61 attempts so in the end it was as tight as the scoreline suggested, just that one less miss getting South over the line. Jan Murphy and Madalene Cleary took turns being the dominant goaler for the Cats, while Haylee Rhook showed her usual willingness to work and she ran hard at both ends of the court before making her mark on the attacking wing in the second half. West Gambier did not pick up any premiership points but clearly had improved significantly on their sluggish opening round loss to East Gambier on Easter Thursday. The Roos, who traditionally have pushed the reigning premiers Millicent the most over the past two or three seasons, did so again and in the end, a lapse in the third quarter, where the Saints were able to take control, saw the Roos only go down by nine goals. Led by a stunning return from Lisa McGregor (Cram), who was sorely missed in the opening round, West had control of the majority of the first quarter. McGregor continually found space on the drive into the post, while the ball movement of the Roos offence was slick and precise and didn’t allow the Saints to set up their usual smothering defence. And at the other end, the reigning champs were getting a taste of their own medicine as the Roos shut down the space, forced the Saints into slow ball movement and contested every possession with some tough work on the body. In the end, the Saints did settle and by the first change, score were locked away at 14-all. The second quarter followed a similar script as Millicent couldn’t get their usual free flowing style of netball out of first gear and also couldn’t put the brakes on the free flowing West offence, with Carlee Davey and McGregor combining well to set up scoring opportunities. The inclusion of Carly Trevilyan, returning from injury, also gave more grunt to the defensive end, where young defender Maddy Teakle was throwing caution to the wind and making life tough for Donna Denton, Teakle was happy to go step for step with the champion shooter and her willingness to contest ensured Denton had to work for every scoring opportunity and by the half, Millicent had a three goal lead. It was in the third, when West was forced to rest Trevilyan and inject talented youngster Olivia McEvoy into the contest at centre, that Millicent started to find their feet. The offensive end started to open up and the slick, quick ball movement we have come to expect from the Saints started to result in easier scoring opportunities. Keah Lynch and Melinda Squire swapped bibs, with Lynch moving into that offensive third and she combined well with Lisa Duldig to find the circle edge with greater ease. Hayley Dunn and Kimmi Varcoe also started to pick up some more interceptions, making life a little tougher for McGregor and her shooting partner Tahlia Earl. The Saints won the quarter by five goals and enjoyed an eight goal lead going into the last. The script then returning to the arm wrestle

style of netball it had been in the first half as both sides made a number of uncharacteristic errors but in the end Millicent hung on for a nine goal victory. The other match saw North secure the points in its under lights clash with East Gambier – 54-41. It was a tight opening quarter that saw the score squared away – Sarah Lock proving the dominant player on court, converting eight goals straight before she coughed up a miss as her traditional long range accuracy ensured East got full value for possession. The quarter was littered with unforced errors with the wild and windy conditions ensuring this would be a defensive stoush. The Tigers settled in the second as coach Caroline Davey started to become a factor. She received great delivery from Abbey Duncan and Amanda O’Shaughnessy and despite the fact East keeper Eilish McKay was making Davey earn her possessions, the weight of supply saw North work its way to a seven goal half time advantage.

North had the better of the third as well as Alannah Campbell started to make life tougher for Lock and Kaitlin Smith continued to be a dominant force at the defensive end, securing a number of interceptions and important touches to ensure North remained in control. Duncan continued to work overtime down court, almost acting as a third mid courter, allowing Davey to dominate the shooting circle for the Tigers. McKay, though continued to earn some important touches and with Lock was her side’s best over the four quarters. By the final change, North enjoyed an 11 goal advantage which they then extended to 13 by the final whistle. The hard running of O’Shaughnessy was critical as was her ability to pick up loose balls and create turnovers at the defensive end of the court, while Smith and Campbell built good pressure across the game to enable them to also create turnovers.

MSENA - Magpies & Demons impress in round two Hatherleigh has bounced back from its tough opening round loss to Glencoe with an even harder fought one goal victory over Robe.

In tough conditions, no more than three goals ever separated the two sides and in the end, it was the Eagles who were on the right side of the scoreboard when the final whistle blew, taking the points 59-58. It was Robe that got the better of the start bursting out of the blocks to take a 4-1 lead but some handling errors and better defensive efforts from Hatherleigh, saw the Eagles square things away by the first change. Robe again started the best in the second quarter but the Eagles again built across the quarter and applied enough defensive pressure to secure a three goal half time lead. Given the tough conditions, all four goalers on court had impressive games – Megan Allan and Kelsey Wight (Bromley) for Hatherleigh and Keely Mason and Felicity Carter for Robe and it was the Rooster who entered the final quarter with a one goal buffer before Eagles wing attack Courtney Mesecke got some important defensive touches to see the Eagles take the one

goal victory. Glencoe built on its opening round win with a tough four goal victory over Nangwarry. Sarah Kasparian was again a key in the shooting circle, while at the opposite end, Tammy Smith was also a strong focal point. In the end , though, this was a game where the defenders had the final say – Saints defensive duo Cassie Dinnison and Kayla Gray certainly the pick of their team, while Ashlea Edwards and Sarah Edwards were best for the Murphies. Kalangadoo opened its season in style with a strong 61-37 victory over Mt Burr. Jayde Peacock was the star of the show, while youngster Sarah Croser impressed in the shooting circle. Croser’s combination with Jenna Paproth (Pitt) showed promise for the Magpies and with Peacock driving hard and feeding the shooting duo with precision ensured it was a tough day out for the Mossies defender. Megan Thiele, though, was still one of the Mossies’ best as she battled hard in the defensive circle against the height and strength of Croser and Paproth.

Kongorong opened 2015 with a stunning win but the Hawks were brought back down to earth by an improved Port MacDonnell who looked a lot slicker than in the opening round. Led by 250 game defender Belinda Scott and a best on court performance from newly installed wing attack Michelle Moore (Lewis), the Demons were in control from go to whoa. Scott and Ash Heald shut down the opportunities for tall Hawks shooter Tabatha Sanderson, while goalers Toni Lee Gilmore and Tamara Ferguson combined well to create space and scoring opportunities for each other.

Allison Anderson and Pre Jennings were again important for the Hawks through the mid court and their battle with Megan Hein and Ashley Earlwas an arm wrestle all day but the Demons had too much class and experience to secure the 30 goal win.

TOP GOLFERS HEADING TO THE LIMESTONE COAST THIS WEEKEND The Limestone Coast will host 45 golf professionals this weekend with both the Blue Lake Golf Club and Naracoorte Golf Club, rated in Australia’s Top-100 Public Access Golf Courses, will host the Australian PGA Legends Tour. The increase in nominations on the past two year’s events is a tribute to the presentation and test the golf course presents each year. It is also the first year the Mount Gambier based course is hosting a round. Chris Williams returns from South Africa, and Peter Fowler and Simon Owen from New Zealand will be joined by 14 players from New South Wales, 12 from Victoria, 11 from Queensland, three from South Australia and two from Western Australia. Two high profile PGA professionals will be playing for the first time in this region - Mike Harwood (below top) and David Merriman. Harwood is an experienced European Seniors Tour player and a prolific winner of events in Australia and New Zealand. One memorable highlight of his career was to finish second at the 1991 Open Championship at Birkdale Golf Club to Australian Ian Baker-Finch. Harwood will start as one of the favourites to win and a player worth watching over the weekend.

David Merriman was the former club professional at Bonnie Doon Golf Club in Sydney with Brett Ogle. David resigned and entered the European Seniors Tour School, winning at his first attempt. Merriman went on to retain his tour card for the next six years touring Europe and enjoying success on the Tour each year. “I heard glowing reports about the event management and the demanding test the Naracoorte golf course presented, I needed to see that,” Merriman said. The 45 professionals will all be at the Naracoorte Golf Club on Saturday preparing their course notes and strategy for the next day’s $10,000 prize money event. Saturday evening the Club for the third year will host a “Meet the Pro’s” lamb roast dinner and player interviews. This popular evening is open to any golf enthusiast and bookings can be made at the club or pro-shop. The professionals will be joined by sponsors and their guests playing a team stableford event with the three best scores on each hole to count. A 9am shotgun start with presentations and a 2pm “Country Afternoon Tea” will conclude the day as most of the professionals will then drive to Adelaide for another event on Monday. PGA member and former full time coach Paul Dalgleish will hold a free one hour coaching session at 4pm on Saturday April 25 for ladies from any golf club.
