Glenlg Shire honours the community’s best Two Glenelg Shire residents who have dedicated their lives to volunteering in our community have shared the 2016 Glenelg Shire Citizen of the Year Australia Day Award.

Portland’s Myra Bourke and the late Geoff Richardson of Casterton were named joint recipients of the day’s top honour, recognised today in celebrations hosted across the shire.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said both were outstanding individuals who had strengthened their local communities through their tireless volunteer efforts. Mr

Richardson, who passed away in September, was well recognised as a dedicated and hardworking Scout leader, volunteering in Casterton and district for more than 20 years. “There are many families in Casterton whose lives have been enriched by Geoff’s dedication, mentorship and for passing on values, and life changing experiences to countless children through his Scout work,” Cr Oberlander said. “I hear of many stories where Geoff has helped lost children find direction in their lives, where he made them feel valued, taught them a good work ethic and how to strive for their goals in life.” Fellow Citizen of the Year Ms Bourke has been a tireless campaigner for aged care, volunteering more than 60 hours per week as a manager and personal care coordinator at Portland’s Seaview House.

She is also a volunteer in a number of other community organisations.“Myra was instrumental in saving Seaview House from the brink of closure. She has the trust of the community and with her nursing background and business skills, together with her compassion, zest for life and dedication to the task, has provided new life to this important aged care facility,” Cr Oberlander said. “The time, effort and commitment she has made continue to amaze and inspire the wider community in strengthening this aged care facility.” Hundreds of people joined Australia Day celebrations in Portland, Heywood and Casterton to recognise the award winners and to celebrate the citizenship of nine Glenelg Shire residents.

Australia Day Ambassadors provided motivational addresses at the celebrations, including National Disability Insurance

Scheme chairman Bruce Bonyhady AM at Portland and Heywood, and charitable identity Rachel Porter who joined Casterton’s festivities.

Other Australia Day award winners included; Senior Citizen of the Year – Cornelius Melis Mr Melis has been recognised for more than 50 years community service with local organisations including Rotary Club of Portland (since 1966), Portland Camera Club (since 1960) and Glenelg Shire arts program as a volunteer guide. He has donated more than 280 historical photographs of Portland and district to Council’s Cultural Collection.

Young Citizen of the Year – Angela Bennett A Bayview College 2015 Year 12 graduate, Angela was school leader and an outstanding role model to fellow students. She is a Portland Gymnastic Club coach and was a 2014 Future Leaders of Industry Program recipient and participant in the 2014 Australian Youth Humanities Forum.

Angela is actively involved with the Oaktree Foundation, a youth movement to end global poverty, and was shortlisted in the MSRF (Macpherson Smith Rural Foundation) Future Rural Leaders Scholarship.

Community Group of the Year – Dartmoor Progress Association For the past 70 years the community led association has worked tirelessly initiating projects and improvements for the local community. Work has included ongoing maintenance of public gardens and nature strips, and fundraising more than $50,000 over the past decade to maintain machinery.

The group initiated the development of the town’s golf club and sporting complex, village green redevelopment and establishment of the town’s iconic wood carvings which line the main street. The members are also tireless campaigners for the Tidy Towns scheme and have won a number of the statewide awards over the years.

LOCAL Wattle Range honours its Australia Day heroes Mayor Peter Gandolfi has acknowledged the recipients of the 2016 Wattle Range Australia Day Awards. Mr Gandolfi said the awards acknowledge the contribution and service provided to the community by individuals and groups. Recipients of the 2016 Australia Day Citizen of the Year Awards were Sue van der Heul, of Millicent, Dawn Williams, of Rendelsham, Mark Edwards, of Penola, and Peter Burford, of Kalangadoo. Ashlee Sullivan, of Kalangadoo, received the Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year Award for the Riddoch Ward, recognising her outstanding leadership skills and endeavours in youth activities. Australia Day Community Event of the Year Awards was awarded to the Millicent Bowling Club’s Night Bowls Competition, for the Corcoran Ward, and joint winners for the Sorby Adams Ward were Kalangadoo Remembers (100 Year Galliopli ANZAC Commemoration Service/Breakfast) and the Blades of Glencoe events. Mr Gandolfi said the recipients are to be congratulated for their awards.

“Our volunteers make a valuable contribution

throughout Wattle Range and this is a small way to recognise their achievements in making our region a great place to live,” Mr Gandolfi said. Wattle Range appoints new CEO A former Air Force Squadron Leader has been appointed as the incoming Wattle Range Council chief executive officer. Following a special meeting of Council last Wednesday night, Mayor Peter Gandolfi announced that Ben Gower will commence as CEO on April 4. The appointment follows a recommendation to Council by a five member selection panel made up of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and three councillors. The panel shortlisted approximately 30 applicants for the position and conducted interviews last week.

Mr Gandolfi said Ben comes with a high level of management experience through his career in the military and private sector. “Following his 14 year military service in the Royal Australian Airforce,

including active service, Ben has held senior management roles with Cobham Aviation Services for the past 14 years. Most recently, he held the position as Senior Vice President – Operations, where he was responsible for the strategic leadership and management of the organisation’s global operational functions supporting 140 aircraft across 14 different aircraft fleets.” Mr Gower said he is looking forward to working with the elected members and staff of the Wattle Range Council in supporting our local community.

Mr Gower has three adult children and will be relocating to Wattle Range with his wife Sally.

George Morant: Paintings & Prints from the Artist’s Collection • RIDDOCH ART GALLERY, MOUNT GAMBIER January 29 – March 13 George Morant’s style is a satirical approach, using expressionism and social realism as a protest against evil and cruelty.

Subjects include white settlement, the aboriginal trackers, war, religion and isolation of his time in the mines. “I found painting as a way of talking to myself, having a little scream.” Morant’s paintings are in collections worldwide and he is represented by the Australian National Gallery.

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS Beetroot & Goat’s Cheese Foccacia 2 teaspoons (7g/1 sachet) dried yeast 1 teaspoon caster sugar 1 1/2 cups warm water 3 cups bread & pizza plain flour 2 teaspoons table salt 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 bunches baby beetroot, trimmed leaving 2cm of stem attached, scrubbed 1/3 cup)Nudie with Veggies Beetroot, Apple, Carrot, Pineapple & Mint juice 1/4 cup)caster sugar, extra 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice Sea salt flakes, to sprinkle 120g pkt goat’s cheese, crumbled Beetroot micro herbs, to serve.

Method Combine yeast, sugar and 60ml (1/4 cup) of the water in a small bowl. Set aside in a warm place for 10 minutes or until foamy. Combine the flour and salt in a large bowl. Make a well in the centre. Add the yeast mixture and remaining water. Use your hands to bring the dough together. Turn onto a clean work surface. Knead for 10 minutes or until dough is smooth and elastic. Brush a large bowl with a little of the oil. Add the dough. Cover with a tea towel. Set aside in a warm draught-free place to prove for 1 hour or until doubled in size. Lightly grease a large baking tray with some more of the olive oil. Gently place the dough onto the tray and push into an oval about 18 x 29cm. Cover and set aside to prove for 45 minutes or until risen slightly. Meanwhile, cook beetroot in a large saucepan of boiling water for

25 minutes or until tender. Drain and peel under cold running water. Halve or quarter the beetroot. Gently fold the dough into thirds and turn upside down, pressing into a slightly larger oval. Firmly press the beetroot pieces into the bread. Cover and set aside to prove for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 250°C/230°C fan forced. Place a deep tray of water in the base of the oven (this creates steam which helps the bread develop a crisp and shiny crust). Drizzle remaining oil over the bread and sprinkle with sea salt flakes. Bake on the highest shelf for 20 minutes or until bread is golden and sounds hollow when tapped on the base. Set aside to cool.

Meanwhile, stir the juice and extra caster sugar in a small saucepan over low heat for 5 minutes or until the sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil and simmer rapidly for 5-6 minutes or until thick and syrupy. Stir in the lemon juice. Sprinkle the goat’s cheese and small beetroot leaves over the focaccia. Drizzle the beetroot syrup over the focaccia.

Celebrations at the recent Coonawarra Vigneron’s Cup paused to acknowledge the dedication of two of the organisation’s own. Coonawarra vigneron Doug Bowen was awarded the honour of Coonawarra Patron in recognition of his outstanding personal and professional contributions to the development and promotion of the Coonawarra wine region.

Hollick Wines founder Wendy Hollick, also joined the exclusive patrons club, which also includes Doug Banaves and viticulturist Colin Kidd. Fellow Coonawarra winemaker Greg Clayfield presented the award to Doug, noting that he has “...a passion for quintessential Coonawarra and has always been a supporter and ambassador for the region.”

Doug was a founding member of the Coonawarra Vigneron’s Association in 1983, going on to serve as treasurer for most of the years between 1986 and 2005 and as president in 1990 and 1991.

Doug Bowen’s commitment to the region since establishing the family owned and operated winery Bowen Estate in 1972 exemplifies the innovative vineyard management techniques he has established and which are a hallmark of the Bowen Estate wine experience and its wines. Wendy is the first female to join a select few who have received this accolade, which recognizes those who have greatly contributed to the success and character of Coonawarra wine region. As Sue Hodder

highlighted when presenting the award on behalf of the Coonawarra Vignerons, Wendy has been an important mentor for the community, particularly the younger members. She has been instrumental in the area of wine education through her exceptional ability to communicate in simple terms, no doubt a reflection of her previous teaching experience. Wendy’s ongoing support as a volunteer on numerous committees and boards over the years is evidence of her passion for the region. She has been a tremendous advocate for Coonawarra, and has continually explored ways to further tourism.

LOCAL Grant District Council celebrates Australia Day Members of the District Council of Grant community have been recognised in the 2016 Australia Day Awards, which were announced at council’s Australia Day lunch celebration at the Allan Scott Glenburnie Racecourse last Tuesday. Grant Mayor Richard Sage said as a council we feel that it is important to not only celebrate the award recipients but to honour all of our nominees. “They have all made a positive difference to our community and should feel very proud to be nominated for the award,” he said. The Australia Day Ambassador was Cate Fowler, who is a theatre producer and director specialising in professional performance work

for children and family audiences. She founded Windmill Performing Arts which provides high quality performance experiences to inspire and enrich the learning and imagination of children. Ms Fowler assisted the Mayor to present this year’s District Council of Grant Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, and Community Event of the Year Awards. The Community Event of the Year was awarded to the South East Christian Surfers Group. The South East Christian Surfers Group volunteered to design and construct the public boardwalk at Brown Bay in 2015. The boardwalk was designed to enable surfers, families, prams, and wheelchairs to pass, with a viewing area at the beach. A floating ramp down from the viewing platform was designed to allow non able bodied visitors to access and enjoy the beach area, whilst remaining safe from snakes and protecting the environment. Other nominees were the World War I Soldier Settlers Mount Schank No 2 memorial and the Tarpeena Community Market.

The Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to Port MacDonnell’s Madeline Murdoch. During 2015 Madeline was a great role model too many District Council of Grant young citizens by being House Captain at the Mount Gambier High School.

Madeline has been involved with many projects ranging from busking for the White Ribbon appeal as well as representing the South East by performing at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

Port MacDonnell’s Grant Fensom was named the Citizen of the Year, with Bob Davis, of OB Flat, and Wendy DiCenso, of Mount Gambier, also being nominated. Grant’s name is always put forward as the “go to” person when someone needs assistance or something needs fixing in the Port MacDonnell area. He is enthusiastic and dedicated to his community by volunteering for more than 23 years to the Port MacDonnell CFS, initiating the

Generations in Jazz signs top international trombonist One of the world’s top brass instrumentalists has become the latest international guest artist to jump on board the Generations in Jazz ‘bandwagon’.

Described by US music media as “arguably the baddest trombonist on the planet”, the legendary Wycliffe Gordon will join the University of North Texas’ One O’Clock Lab Band and multi award-winning Australian music icon Kate Ceberano at the May 6-8 jazz music spectacular being held in SA’s Limestone Coast. Generations in Jazz chairman, James Morrison, says the 250 stage bands and vocal ensembles who have already registered for the event are in for a major treat. “Wycliffe is an amazing musician, he plays trumpet, trombone, tuba, sings and is one of the most dynamic and talented players on the jazz scene today,” he says.

Heavily inspired by the late Louis Armstrong, Wycliffe Gordon travels virtually yearround performing his signature jazz sound at world-famous venues, receiving great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. He is also a passionate mentor to high school bands, and Mr Morrison says his decision to add Mount Gambier to his busy international performance schedule is extremely exciting.

The 8-Ball at the Barn Palais will be held on Saturday 19th March, 2016, with guests set to rewind the tapes on half a century of memories created by South East Telecasters (SES 8) and WIN Television. So far, up to 80 past and present employees have RSVP’d for the ultimate staff party, but the search continues for many former colleagues, with an estimated 370 station alumni spread across the globe. Darryl ‘Sid’ Hosking, who was a cameraman at the station for 44 years, has developed a database of names, but says a number of people have been difficult to track down. “We have released a ‘Where are they now?’ list and are asking for the public’s help to put us in touch so that we can spread the word about the event,” he says. LOCAL Australia Day award winners for Mount Gambier Mount Gambier celebrated Australia Day for the first time this year at the newly revamped Tail lands with the 2016 award winners front and centre of the community celebrations.

AUSTRALIA DAY CITIZENS OF THE YEAR •Beryl Mahoney Having migrated to Mount Gambier from New Zealand in the mid 1980’s Beryl joined the local Lioness Club soon after arrival, enhancing the Mount Gamiber community through her local volunteering for humanitarian purposes for over 30 years. She is fondly remembered by many people for her work over a decade in organising local debutante balls with Jenny Bowman. Beryl has been involved in advancing many important causes and social programs including the Leukaemia Foundation, the Library home delivery program, hospital patient visitations, Relay for Life and the Look Good Feel Better program, amongst many others.

• Libby Furner Known by many as a passionate early learning literacy educator, former teacher Libby Furner also has a lengthy involvement with the South Australian Red Cross, where she currently serves on both the State Advisory Board and the National Council. Libby has volunteered at the Mount Gambier Red Cross Service for many years, in both fundraising and project coordination roles. She has also had a long term active involvement with the Mount Gambier West Rotary Club and is a past President and now Vice Patron.

• Robin Conboy Local nurseryman Robin Conboy has created a strong botanical legacy throughout our City, a result of his extensive knowledge being readily shared.

Robin was involved in the Valley Lakes conservation area redevelopment, and the Community Garden since its inception in 2007, being President for three years. He has been closely involved with the Botanic Gardens along with overseeing the grounds of Boandik Lodge, advising on the suitability of plants for that space. Robin has been involved with the Facilities Management Committee at Boandik for over 18 years. He has also made a significant contribution to the University of the Third Age and the Mount Gambier Seniors Festival. Robin is a

member of the Lions Club of Mount Gambier and has been a Lions member for over 43 years, receiving multiple awards in that time.

AUSTRALIA DAY YOUNG CITIZENS OF THE YEAR • Shekinah Horsburgh Local musician and social inclusion advocate Shekinah Horsburgh has just completed year 12 at Mount Gambier High School. Shekinah is actively involved with Mount Gambier the Youth Advisory Group, where she is well respected for her leadership, reliability and compassion. Her involvement with the group in particular the Let’s Talk About Sexuality Forum in 2015 saw a KESAB excellence award presented to the group. She has been involved with her family in organising the Walk Together Mount Gambier event over the past two years. She has won numerous Lions Youth of the Year public speaking events and awards for academic excellence.

• Sam Jenner A young volunteer with the Moorak CFS and Contact Under Officer with the Mount Gambier Australian Army Cadet Unit 48, Sam Jenner has completed the Junior Leader’s course with them and was promoted to CPL. Shortly after this he became Section Commander. Sam has been recognised for his community involvement and strong advocacy skills, having lobbied successfully at a State level to ensure a future for the Unit. Sam declined a highly coveted invitation to attend the 2015 Gallipoli Cadet selection, in order to allow a younger Cadet to have the opportunity to represent their community at the event. He is acknowledged as a young leader worthy of taking note of into the future.

AUSTRALIA DAY COMMUNITY EVENT OF THE YEAR • Mount Gambier Parkrun Encouraging inclusion and participation from runners of all ages, Parkrun promotes active lifestyle, with weekly timed runs. Operating in Mount Gambier for almost 2 years, the group have hosted over 99 local events involving 807 runners from 44 clubs. The Mount Gambier Parkrun Course has gained a reputation of being both challenging and beautiful, with members from over 40 clubs coming to participate.

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS Triple choc pavlova 4 egg whites, at room temperature; 215g (1 cup) caster sugar; 1 tsp white vinegar; 1 tbs cocoa powder, sifted; 2 x 220g ctn Extra Light Philadelphia Cream Cheese Spreadable, at room temperature; 200g low-fat ricotta; 1 tsp vanilla extract; 400g strawberries, hulled, sliced; Fresh berries, to serve; 10g dark chocolate, finely grated Low fat chocolate sauce 1/2 cup, firmly packed brown sugar; 2 tbs cocoa powder; 3 tsp cornflour; 250ml (1 cup) water; 1 star anise, whole Method Preheat oven to 120C/100C fan forced. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Draw two 20cm circles on each lined tray and turn the paper ink-side down. Use electric beaters to beat egg white in a clean, dry bowl until firm peaks form. Gradually add caster sugar, 1 tbs at a time, beating constantly until sugar dissolves and mixture is thick and glossy. Beat in vinegar. Sift half the cocoa powder over the meringue mixture.

Use a large metal spoon to fold and create a swirled effect. Divide mixture among circles. Use palette knife to spread meringue until discs are even. Use a sieve

to dust remaining cocoa over the meringue discs.

Use the palette knife to swirl into meringue slightly.

Bake, swapping trays halfway through, for 1 hour 40 minutes until meringues are crisp and dry. Turn oven off. Leave meringues in oven, with door closed, to cool completely. Meanwhile, for chocolate sauce, combine brown sugar, cocoa powder and cornflour in a saucepan. Stir in water and star anise until well combined. Stir over low heat for 5 minutes or until mixture boils and thickens. Transfer to a bowl. Cover surface with plastic wrap to prevent skin forming. Set aside for 2 hours to cool and thicken. Use electric beaters to beat cream cheese, ricotta and vanilla in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Place in the fridge for 1 hour to cool and thicken. Place 1 meringue on serving plate. Carefully spread with half the cream cheese mixture. Top with half the strawberries.

Repeat with second meringue, cream cheese mixture and strawberries. Drizzle with a little chocolate sauce. Sprinkle with berries and grated chocolate.

Serve with remaining sauce on the side.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY It’s not easy being a man... by Robbie Tansel I wrote last week of the difficulty of being a woman.

But let me tell you, it’s no picnic being a man either.

We men might make it look easy, but trust me it’s not.

What has brought this to my mind this week is the difficulty of having facial hair. Every good man needs to grow some hair on their face. here are many different options available and this is one of the first difficulties when it comes to facial hair. Full beard?

Moustache? Side burns? Goatee? Fu Manchu. The possibilities are endless.

Some men will be limited a little by their ability to grow facial hair which is

another challenge again. One of the biggest problems with having facial hair is the fact that it looks fantastic, it’s masculine and sexy, but there are so many things that are better without it. Things that are better without facial hair include brushing your teeth. With a beard you end up with toothpaste throughout the beard and moustache area around the mouth.

This can be really quite challenging to remove, often leading to a crusty feeling around the mouth. Another regular chore that becomes difficult with facial hair is applying sun screen.

To be honest I’m not a fan of applying sun screen at the best of times, but with facial hair it becomes particularly challenging. I aim to apply the cream to the exposed parts of my face but then decide the sun can probably

LOCAL get through some of the patchier parts of my beard. I then apply it to parts of my face covered with beard which is very difficult to rub through the beard and into my skin.

Inevitably I’m left with cream all over my beard that I just can’t get to rub in. As silly as it sounds, shaving is another job which becomes irritating with facial hair.

“Why are you shaving if you have a beard, Robbie?” you may ask. Well, facial hair will generally grow on parts of the face where it is unwanted. This may be high on the cheek bones or at the other extreme on lower parts of the neck. The facial hair needs to be kept neat and presentable.

Without facial hair you simply shave everywhere. The aim is to cut the whole forest down. With facial hair you have to be careful about what is cut and what is left alone. There may be stress about trying to keep both sides of the face even. You might be aiming for nice straight lines. If you’re not careful you can end up with the old trying to get the legs of the chair even and just have to keep taking a little bit more off each side until you’re left with a legless chair.

Quite obviously eating sloppy food

with facial hair is not as pleasant.

People will joke about storing food in their beard to enjoy later but it can often be unpleasant. Chocolate éclair without beard : delightful. Chocolate éclair with beard : not quite the same experience. I ate a delicious jam and cream scone one day and happened to unwittingly end up with cream in my moustache. I cleaned it off with a serviette but obviously was not thorough enough. As my day progressed the odour just beneath my nose became increasingly unpleasant as the cream curdled or whatever cream does. Unfortunately I was involved in activities where I couldn’t go and deal with it properly so was stuck with the problem for quite a period of time. I hope that the next time you see a man with facial hair you understand and appreciate the sacrifice he is making for your visual enjoyment. As part of the development of the Wattle Range Council’s 2020 Vision Strategic Community Plan, residents are invited to have input in the future of their community through a recently released community survey. The survey encourages participants to share their thoughts on how council should improve its services and facilities, as well as ideas and suggestions to develop the region and plan for the future.

It covers issues such as Council’s current services and infrastructure, strengths and weaknesses, communication and consultation with the community and future initiatives for youth and aged services.

Mayor Peter Gandolfi encouraged all residents to take the time to complete the survey. “It is important for everyone to have an opportunity to have their say,” he said.

“Council wants to keep in touch with the aspirations of its local residents and determine their priorities so that Council can make the best decisions possible on behalf of its community.

“It’s important that Council undertakes continuous review of the services it provides to the community to meet the needs of the ever changing environment in which we live in.”

Ambrose Golf Day, which is a highly enjoyable “must-do” for golfers of all levels. That evening, Naracoorte North Kindergarten will again hold an open-air family movie with a BBQ and activities at the Showgrounds. LOCAL Southern Grampians hands out Australia Day honours Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Peter Dark presented the winners of the 2016 Southern Grampians Shire Australia Day Awards at the shire’s official Australia Day ceremony at the Hamilton Botanical Gardens last Tuesday. Mayor Dark said it was important to recognise the outstanding achievements of people from within the shire.

“On behalf of the residents of the Southern Grampians Shire I would like to congratulate all of the Australia Day award winners,” Mayor Dark said.

“These winners are part of the reason why the Southern Grampians is such a great community to live and be involved in. It is fitting that they are recognised for their outstanding achievements with the presentation of an Australia Day Award.”

The 2016 Southern Grampians Shire Australia Day Awards winners were: •Citizen of the Year Award – John Thomas Kane (from Coleraine) • Young Citizen of the Year Award – Terrie Johnson (from Coleraine)

Netball courts set for upgrade Alexandra Park’s ageing netball courts have been earmarked for a major upgrade. Consultants rated the Westerns Football Netball Club courts as one of the region’s highest priorities for redevelopment in a recent audit process due to the poor court run-off.

Glenelg Shire Council last night voted at its ordinary council meeting to make an application to the State Government’s Country Football Netball Program to assist with funding the important upgrade which would involve complete resurfacing of the precinct’s two courts. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said council was focused on supporting and encouraging women in sport. He said council had also committed funding to Casterton’s Island

Park and Portland’s Hanlon Park netball change room upgrades, pending State Government funding support. Council has previously supported the Tyrendarra Recreation Reserve in its $320,000 netball project which involved the resurfacing of four courts. “Alexandra Park is one of the busiest sporting precincts in the Glenelg Shire with eight grades of netball played on the court each winter, in addition to senior and junior football competitions,” Cr Oberlander said. “This redevelopment will greatly improve playing conditions for the South West District Football Netball League competition.”

LOCAL National success for local dance school Every two years, Maria Slape takes her best soloists and troupes to the Gold Coast to compete at one of Australia’s premier dance competitions – National Showcase. Held at Jupiters Casino, MJ Dance has

made a habit of punching well above its weight at the prestigious event, and in 2016 results were just as impressive with MJ Dance Studio one of the highest represented clubs in the final battles, with only Sydney’s The Village, out- performing the Mount Gambier studio. MJ Dance took a contingent of 58 dancers, many for the first time and ranging in age from seven to 20 years old, to the week long event, which attracts dancers from right across Australia and New Zealand, with 4200 acts gracing the stage. Aside from the competition, the event also provides great networking opportunities for dancers and teachers alike, as well as workshops for all ages. Five MJ groups were selected for the final battles, finishing runner-up in three divisions and fourth the remaining two. Petite large group, junior small group and pre teen small group were the runner-up performers, with the junior large group and senior small group earning the fourth place ranking. MJ also boasts a proud tradition of excellence in the solo competitions and 2016 was no exception, with Mount Gambier dancers featuring in both the Dancer of the Year competitions, and the newly installed League of Champions, which is for dancers based on results across the regional competitions. Madi Lane made the top 10 in petite, Ryan Thompson top five in pre teen, Lucie Milstead top 20 in pre teen and Cooper Terry top 20 Senior. It was a very exciting day for the studio to achieve some great results given the massive entries in this elite section with between 60 to 80 competitors,” school principal Maria Slape said. Madi Lane was also successful in achieving third in petite League of Champions and Cooper Terry was runner up in Senior. In other impressive solo results, Tia Lawrie won the overall soloists in the petite ruby division, Halle Anderson won junior diamond, with Jessica Smart coming in runner up. In pre teen diamond division MJ had three dancers representing the school with Ryan Thompson finishing fourth , Lucie Milstead, ninth, and Ellie Harding, 10th. “The kids worked really hard all year for this event so it was wonderful that they were awarded some fantastic results for their effort,” Maria said. “The very best dancers are at this event so it really is quite satisfying seeing our kids up on the stage placing alongside them.” The National Showcase event is certainly an eye opener for new parents as they see the nest of Australia’s dance talent go head to head.

“But what is really amazing to them is that it is such a relaxing event and all the schools and teachers are so supportive of each other,” Maria said. In somewhat of a coup for MJ Dance was seeing former alumni Kiana De Van Der Schueren take out the competition’s top award – Dancer of the Year, earning her a trip to the United States, following in the footsteps of the likes of Euan Doidge. Three students also then attended a Melbourne based competition, Hollywood Bound, run by the same organisers, with Lucie Milstead and Ryan Thompson earning top five finishes in pre teen dancer of the Year and Courtney Jolley competing in the elite division, the highest division on offer, finishing second with her Broadway Jazz performance and third in Jazz. MJ Dance classes start this week with most competition classes filled to capacity but plenty of room in the fun classes and acrobatics.
