Two of the food world’s most passionate sustainable farming advocates will be helping to plant the seeds of a local food revolution during a unique regional Tasting Australia event being held in the Limestone Coast next month. TV host Paul West (River Cottage Australia - pictured) and Michael Pollan protégé, Liz Carlisle, will share inspiring stories of producers who have revitalised their land and energised their local food cultures during a day centred around small plot concepts and community. ‘From little things big things grow’ is a joint collaboration between boutique producers Kalangadoo Organic and Bellwether Wines. After joining Paul West on a tour of Chris and Michelle McColl’s Kalangadoo apple orchards, participants will head to nearby Coonawarra to hear Liz Carlisle’s fascinating insight into American Agriculture and natural foods. Both special guests say they are thrilled to be involved in the event. “As someone who has never had the pleasure of visiting the Limestone Coast, it has always struck me as a cornucopia of food production,” Paul West said.

Users of Glenelg Libraries services will soon enjoy extended hours with plans to introduce evening opening hours. Glenelg Shire Council last night voted in favour of a 12-month trial to open the Portland Library one day each week into the late evening, closing at 8pm. It is anticipated the doors will remain open on a mid-week day, such as Wednesday, once staffing rosters are determined. Meanwhile, Casterton Library users will benefit from a three month extension of its Saturday morning openings, which will continue to 30 June 2016 operating from 10am to 1pm. The library welcomes on average more than 50 users each weekend since the trial begun earlier this year.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said the additional hours were a result of user feedback, urging

for extended openings outside of normal business hours. “A majority of the state’s libraries open beyond 6pm weekdays, and open regularly on weekends.

Council believes these extended opening hours will assist in growing our user base, as many people are unable to attend because the current opening hours do not support their work commitments,” he said. “Furthermore, it will provide greater opportunity for our library staff to introduce evening programs for such things as, computer classes, book group discussions and author events. It will also provide greater opportunity for people to enjoy a quiet study environment for extended periods.” A public announcement will be made in the coming weeks regarding Portland Library’s new opening times.

ENGAGING GEN-Z TO BECOME FUTURE LEADERS Social advocate Yassmin Abdel-Magied (pictured) will headline a professional development session next week aimed at inspiring a new generation of young leaders. The acclaimed writer and mechanical engineer, best known for her appearances on Q&A as a women’s and youth advocate, will headline the free community discussion at South West TAFE this Friday showcasing how to best engage Generation Z and the Millennials to become active community members. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said many community groups and organisations were led by an ageing volunteer base, and it was paramount that a new generation was inspired to become involved. “Young people have enthusiasm, energy and ideas, but sadly they are missing from so many of our local organisations. Yassmin will inspire us all to realise how we can engage with our youth to ensure they have a greater voice and role in our community, to ensure the sustainability of so many of these groups,” he said. Ms AbdelMagied founded Youth Without Borders at the age

of 16, an organisation that enables young people to work together to implement positive change. She has forged a career as a social advocate and media commentator, and is a sought after advisor for state and federal governments. Cr Oberlander said Ms Abdel-Magied’s work focused on the empowerment of youth, women and those from culturally diverse backgrounds. “Yassmin, who was also named last year’s Queensland Young Australian of the Year, has demonstrated that hard work, resilience and self-belief reap rewards, regardless of gender, faith or cultural background,” he said. “Come and learn from this inspiring ambassador on why youth engagement is so important to the future of our community. She will show simple ways to effectively engage with young people, including how to communicate well and tailoring messages to appeal to Gen-Z and Millennials.”

The event is hosted by Glenelg Shire Council with support from United Way Glenelg, Committee for Portland, South West TAFE and the State Government.

JAZZ FESTIVAL STARTS TO TAKE SHAPE Assembly work on a giant pavilion large enough to seat an audience of 6100 started last week, transforming a bare paddock on the outskirts of Mount Gambier into the nation’s jazz epicentre. The spectacular circus-style tent branded the James Morrison Pavilion will be the largest in the 34-year history

of Generations in Jazz (GIJ) and is expected to take contractors and a dedicated band of volunteers two days to fully erect. Colin Martin from the GIJ board said organisers have risen to the challenge of accommodating ever-expanding crowds, with the need to add a further 1000 seats beneath the big top reflecting the record number of participants for next week’s (May 6-8) event. “We’ve had to extend it by 15 metres, making this year’s pavilion 90 metres long and 45 metres wide,” he explains. “I think we’ve reached critical mass as we can’t go much further without putting it out over the road!”

The University of North Texas’ world-famous One O’Clock Lab Band, Australian music icons Kate Ceberano and James Morrison, Japanese vocal percussionist Kaichiro Kitamura and US-based jazz sensation Wycliffe Gordon will be among the top international acts performing at this weekend’s festival alongside 261 bands and vocal ensembles from 107 schools. More than 100 buses filled with excited musicians will begin rolling into the Blue Lake city on the Friday morning (May 6), while two chartered aircraft flying Queensland students in from as far afield as Rockhampton and Warwick are scheduled to land at Mount Gambier Airport from 3:45pm that afternoon. “The chartered flights are a first for our event, but we think it’s the way of the future so long as Mount Gambier Airport gets the upgrades it needs, as it simply saves so much time,” said GIJ publicity officer Jim Kirkup.

“Previously, these students would have had to bus it to Brisbane, fly to Melbourne, and then charter more buses for the six-hour drive to Mount Gambier, so this is literally saving them days.” New Zealand’s Lynfield College has become the first overseas school to register, further cementing GIJ’s reputation as an international event. The Lynfield College band won Most Outstanding Combo at the New Zealand Youth Jazz Festival and Best Combo at the Auckland Secondary Schools Jazz Band

competition, and teacher Lisa Norman says the six-member outfit is looking forward to showcasing its talents in Australia. “The students are all in their last two years of high school and will be the first Lynfield College music group to travel overseas,” she said. Feeding all participants and support staff is no easy feat, but host venue The Barn has mass catering mastered, with three kitchens currently being set up to handle the numbers. “We will be serving up 17,600 meals to the students over the weekend – two dinners and two lunches at 4400 per sitting,” manager Kent Comley said. “Due to the numbers, we need to turn our three venues over twice and thus we will aim to serve the entire 4400 in a bit over an hour - we utilise all 80 of our staff and bring in 70 additional staff to help us to serve the meals, and although it sounds hectic, it really is a lot of fun.” Accommodating the crowds has also called for a team effort; participating schools will be staying in hotels, halls, clubrooms and even private homes across the district. Rooms in Mount Gambier are almost fully booked for the event, with Millicent and Penola also close to maximum capacity, but Lisa Braes from the Mount Gambier Visitor Information Centre said the community was working hard to ensure that no one will be turned away. “There are still a number of selfcontained or homestay options available on the Generations in Jazz website, so we encourage people to get in and book straight away,” she said.

The Friends of Tenison Woods College (Old Scholars Association) is pleased to announce six inaugural ‘Shining Light’ award recipients. Tenison Woods College Principal David Mezinec said the awards aim to recognise significant contributions made by former students, families or staff to the local and global community in order to inspire current and future students. “Tenison Woods College and its predecessors, St Paul’s School, Tenison College, Marist Brothers Agricultural College, Mater Christi College, St Mary’s School and St Joseph’s College value the contributions of all community members, past and present and we think it’s important to recognise some of the stand out achievements within the community,” said Mr Mezinec. The Shining Light awards will be presented to recipients at a reunion dinner on Saturday, October 15.

The six ‘Shining Light’ recipients are: • Lorraine and Ken Gazzard Since moving to Mount Gambier in 1957, Mr and Mrs Gazzard (pictured below - top left) have provided significant commitment to the college over several decades. Their six children and 11 of their 14 grandchildren have attended, or are currently attending the college. St Mary’s School was beginning of the family’s catholic education, where Lorraine was involved in the Mother’s Club that raised money for the school through wedding catering. In later years, catering at the races assisted in fundraising for the Barrie Holmes Stadium. Lorraine always supports college events and is there to lend a hand when required.

For more than 50 years, Mr Gazzard has also supported charity groups, sporting groups and community groups through the family business.

She is also lead singer and songwriter/guitarist in the band Gemini Downs and has performed at the Big Day Out and other major Australian music festivals.

COUNCIL DELIVERS $80K TO COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Adelaide Cabaret Festival Roadshow • SIR ROBERT HELPMANN THEATRE, MOUNT GAMBIER • May 5 This year, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival Roadshow brings together renowned Australian cabaret artists and festival favourites.

A total of $80,000 will be delivered to community organisations across the Glenelg Shire as part of the latest round of Community Grants 2015-16.

Among the 43 beneficiaries was $5000 to the Tyrendarra Gun Club towards new shooting lanes and power upgrades, $5000 for new lights at the Heywood Recreation Reserve and $3000 for new flooring at the Westerns Football Netball Club function room. The Casterton Lions Club will use its $3700 grant to support a proposed Banjo Patterson Show whilst the Nelson Tourist Association will use $1500 for printing of a tourist marketing brochure.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander congratulated the successful applicants, which were drawn from across the shire. “Council is committed

to enhancing our community and these grants, which are valued at up to $5000, can mean the difference in realising a project or event for many of our community groups and organisations.

“Council has delivered more than 80 community grants worth more than $160,000 this financial year which have supported local recreation groups, public halls, tourism projects, arts and culture initiatives, community plans and social support to help our community prosper.” Community grants are delivered in two rounds each financial year.

Applications are invited from not for profit groups and organisations in July/August and January/ February annually.

IMPROVED DISASTYER RESILIENCE FOR REGION The Bordertown region is on its way to improved disaster resilience, with the second stage of the Bordertown Flood Monitoring System project now under construction. The project is developing a flood monitoring system for Tatiara Creek which flows through Bordertown and surrounds, with low lying areas susceptible to regular flooding. Some areas are identified as subject to major ‘1 in 20’ year flood events. The project team has recently installed three rainfall gauges near Bordertown, and construction has commenced for two flow gauging stations in Tatiara Creek, one located 10 km east and one in Bordertown itself. Once complete the monitoring sites will provide data on rainfall events and water level and flow rates in Tatiara Creek. Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) Monitoring Operations Manager Tim Branford is managing the construction phase and said the project will deliver improved disaster resilience for Bordertown.

“It’s a major step forward for the community who currently have no flood monitoring system

in place,” Mr Branford said. The monitoring sites form a critical component of a Total Flood Warning System, and will enable improved planning, preparation and response to flood events in Tatiara Creek thereby reducing the impact of floods on the region and the community. The monitoring data will help to build an understanding of the relationship between localised rainfall events and high flow events in Tatiara Creek helping emergency services and flood hazard managers to understand the timing and extent of high flow events in Bordertown.

Data from the monitoring sites will be available in near real time on the Waterconnect website: https:// www.waterconnect. sa.gov.au/Systems/ RTWD/Pages/Default. aspx The Bordertown Flood Monitoring System project is funded through the Commonwealth and State governments’ 2013-15 Natural Disaster Resilience Program, and is a collaborative effort between Tatiara District Council, the South East Natural Resources Management Board, the South Eastern Water Conservation and Drainage Board and, The Department of Environment Water and Natural Resources.

Following the construction phase, the monitoring sites will be equipped and commissioned. The project is expected to be completed by June.

Mount Gambier’s Sarah McDowell (pictured) has recently returned from competing at an international dog event called Crufts, in the United Kingdom. Sarah gained second place in the working dog class at Crufts. She also performed a team demonstration on the sport of Working Dog Trials in the main arena, which was televised live on television around the world. “The atmosphere of performing in front of a stadium packed full of thousands was exhilarating but also extremely nerve racking,” Sarah said. Sarah used to compete in working dog trials in the UK, where civilians and off duty police dog handlers compete in a range of tests, such as tracking up to three hours old, searching for property, scaling over a 6ft wall,

9ft long jump, along with many other controlled exercises. Sarah also competes with one of her dogs, Cal,i in agility and will be competing at the Australian Agility Nationals later this month.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - WORST JOB EVER... by Robbie Tansel As I write this I’m sitting in a holiday cabin in a caravan park on the Gold Coast.

Tough I know. I’m here with my partner Donna as well as our little fella Shaquille on a family holiday. I, like so many before me, made the mistake of thinking a holiday in Queensland with a young child would be fun. I compounded the problem by thinking it would also be a good idea to fly to Queensland. Luckily I’ve encountered people who have put my own suffering into perspective. You may remember I wrote a couple of weeks ago about a job that would be really good fun, being a newspaper delivery man. On the flipside, I often think of jobs that would be really unpleasant.

Today we went to Movieworld and I’m not convinced there is a single job you’d want to do there, unless they’re paying big money. Let me give you some examples. We encountered terrible job number one before we’d even entered the park. This came when we came across the people sitting in a three metre by three metre box selling tickets. That must be a pretty mind numbing occupation. What ticket do you want. Receive money. Present ticket. Repeat. Repeat.

Repeat. It’s like being a toll booth collector which is also in my top ten of bad jobs. Once inside the park there are a plethora of unpleasant jobs. Pretty much any and every job at a theme park is going to be challenging. A large part of your clientele have little or no ability to communicate in English. I have no problem with foreigners but it would be difficult trying to make your point persistently every day with people who have no idea what you mean. They’ll struggle to be able to order food. They’ll struggle to understand you want them to leave their bag off the ride. They’ll struggle to understand how to use a toilet based on the diagrams I saw in the toilets today. Apparently a lot of them want to stand on the toilet seat and squat

as they do in Asian countries. id I mention that cleaning toilets at a theme park definitely ranks as a bad job! Being one of the characters at a theme park would seem to be the glamour job. But think it through and it pretty quickly goes negative. If you’re in a cartoon character suit - think Bugs Bunny - you’re in a stinking hot suit. That’s going to be unpleasant fast. Young children’s heads will be at a dangerous height as they run excitedly towards you. Teenagers are going to try to mess with you. That’s the reality of your job every day.

You’re job is not likely to be much more pleasant if you’re in a superhero suit either. It’s tight fitting rubber and Lycra so it’s going to be unpleasantly hot still. It’s tight fitting so you can’t afford to get a bulge. I meant from eating too much but when I read that back it made me think of something else that could be an issue. Work that out yourself.

There probably is a little perk as there are people who find people dressed in superhero costumes a bit sexy. That’s only going to last until you take off the costume and they see that you’re no Bruce Wayne, Ben Affleck or whoever it is that is playing Batman at the moment. As soon as the young lady sees that the muscles were mainly the rubber suit, you’re just gonna be some loser who can’t get a job doing haemorrhoid commercials. The other thing you’re dealing with at theme parks is people who are getting progressively less patient from having to wait in lines. There are also children who are overly excited, hyped up on junk food and did I say they’re children. That means they are obnoxious and unpleasant to begin with. Teachers have to put up with children all day but at least they’re allowed to yell at them. As an employee at a theme park you are required to be irrationally enthusiastic at all times. You yell at someone and you’re in charge of cleaning up vomit at the rides.

As a side note, Movieworld now offers a prayer room. I gave it a go but it didn’t work. Four hours

later I was still at Movieworld. It must have been an ACME prayer room. Needless to say, you won’t be seeing a Robbie Tansel theme park in the near future but if you did it would be called Tanselvania. Roasted pumpkin, rocket & fetta frittata 1/2 kg roast pumpkin (cubed) 100g baby rocket 1 small red onion, thinly sliced 100g Fetta, crumbled 1/3 cup grated pizza cheese 8 eggs 3/4 cup pure cream 100g mixed salad leaves 250g cherry tomatoes, halved 1 Lebanese cucumber 1/4 cup balsamic dressing Method Preheat oven to 180C/160C fanforced. Grease a 20cm square (base)

cake pan. Line base and sides with baking paper. Layer pumpkin, rocket, onion and fetta in pan. Sprinkle top with pizza cheese. Whisk eggs and cream together in a large jug. Season with salt and pepper. Pour into pan.

Place pan on a baking tray. Bake for 55 minutes or until browned and just set. Meanwhile, combine salad leaves, tomato, cucumber and dressing in a large bowl. Toss to combine. Stand frittata in pan for 5 minutes. Carefully remove from pan. Cut into pieces and serve with salad.

An opera, a circus rock concert and a night of grass roots music heads up the jam-packed program of the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival, this year celebrating its 25th birthday. SPORTS AWARD GOES TO BASKETBALLER The awardee for 2015 of the Commercial Club Exceptional Junior Award goes to young rising basketball star Lachlan Hunter. A $1000 donation has been allocated by the Junior Sports Assistance Fund to award a young person who demonstrates exceptional commitment and skills to achieve excellence in their chosen sport, with Lachlan beating out four other contenders. The 2015 Commercial Club Inc - Exceptional Junior awardee, Lachlan Hunter typifies the calibre of our young people who with natural talent and family support can achieve State and national recognition. “One of the determining

factors to Lachlan being selected was his contribution back to his sport via umpiring,” said presideing member Cr Hannah Persello. “The Fund is aware that our community produces young sportspersons with real talent but to truly succeed they require a significant financial investment by the junior and by the family.” A presentation ceremony of the Commercial Club - Exceptional Junior Award donation to Lachlan was held last month at the Icehouse Basketball Stadium, Mount Gambier.

South West District FL - A Grade

NETBALL - Star defender plays 250th At the weekend, star Millicent defender Hayley Dunn will step onto the court against West Gambier to play her 250th senior game for the Saints, and it really comes as no surprise that the ever reliable defender was named best on court for the lopsided clash between two of the competition’s undefeated line-ups. Of course, Hayley’s association with Western Border netball dates back to her junior days when she was a developing junior at McLaughlin Park, starting her playing career in 1990 in the Under 15 line-up. That side finished runner-up, going one better in 1991 when Hayley was also the runner-up best & fairest. Only one season later, in 1992, Hayley made her senior debut, in what is now A Reserve, earning A Grade selection the following season under then coach and club and association stalwart Di Facey. Under the guidance and Facey and Michelle Skeer, Hayley developed into the complete defender she still is today, some 20 years on. Using her height and strength to great effect, Hayley has not only been the premier goal keeper in the Western Border competition for the past eight years, with consecutive, unanimous selection in the WB team of the Year, but she has become a mentor for every defender at the Millicent Netball Club or those lucky enough to play alongside her at representative level. Not surprisingly, Hayley has been captain of the Millicent A Grade team for the past decade, also taking on the role of club secretary from 2011-2014. Hayley has been an integral member of the Saints dynasty that has been building since their drought breaking 2000 title, having played in nine premiership winning teams in all - 2006,’ 07, ‘09, ‘10, ‘11, ‘12, ‘13, ‘14, ’15 – twice earning best on court plaudits in 2010 and ’12. During that time she has also picked up two runner-up club best & fairest awards in 2006 and ’14. Hayley moved to Adelaide for tertiary study in 1995, playing for the Adelaide Cougars and earning selection in both the Under 19 & Under 21 South Australian State tams during that time. She moved to Sydney for employment in 1999 and continued her State League career there in the New South Wales competition.

It was in 2005, that close friend and long time team mate Donna Denton lured Hayley back to the Saints for a handful of games while she was living in Melbourne,

Hampden FL - A Grade returning permanently to her home town in 2006 when the Saints clinched the club’s fifth title and what was to become a run of nine flags from 10 years and still counting. Her representative resume during her time is also impressive. Hayley played in several Western Border Under 15 & 17 title winnings teams at the SA Country and Victorian Association Championships and has twice been part of a championship winning Western Border A Grade line-up at the SA Country Championships (2011 & ’15) and the runner-up team of 2012. Hayley has been a rich asset of just for the Millicent club but also the Western Border Netball Association as a whole, grooming such young talent as Nicole Butler, Casey Hutchesson, Kimmi Varcoe, Tanaya Redman, Alex Walker with more to come. Hayley had her three beautiful children, Kynan, Tallan and Kalani and husband David supporting and cheering her on.

SEABL - Strong win at Icehouse The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers enjoyed an emphatic home court triumph on Friday night, dispatching third ranked South Conference rival Kilsyth by 26 points. It was a scrappy affair at times with both teams struggling to find their radar early and ball handling errors throughout the first half, in particular. But after a 10-10 all opening term, the Pioneers eventually found their rhythm - an Erik Burdon three, with just under six minutes to play, sparking a 22-4 run that broke the contest wide open, giving the Pioneers a 17 point half time advantage.

The Cobras did strike back to win the third and go into the final term trailing by 14 points but the Pioneers dug deep in the final term and buoyed by the home crowd, finished strongly to secure a 25 point win.

LOCAL RUGBY The continued development of the Mount Gambier Rugby 7s competition has been highlighted with nine players from the local league named as part of the State Men’s squad - the most of any regional or metrolpolitan league in the South Australia. Jay Drakely, Tui Makore, Jayden Gascoyne, Roydon Walker, Tom Dolan, Anton Lopez, Josh Hiku, Will Marshman and Jason Bird are all part of the 2016 training squad, which will be culled to 25 ahead of the June Long Weekend national championships in Adelaide.
