UFS Chemist, Mount Gambier is a not-for-profit Friendly Society community pharmacy, celebrating 100 years providing quality and affordable medications to Mount Gambier and surrounding districts. Early in 1916 the Friendly Societies in Mount Gambier received notice from the chemists that the charges for medicines would be considerably increased (up to 169%) because of the big rise in the cost of drugs as a result of World War I. The Lodges of the time considered the proposed increases for medicine too high and decided that the establishment of their own dispensary would be an advantage to members of the societies.

The UFS Dispensary was opened in October 1916 and operated by the Friendly Societies on a not-for-profit principle.

For the payment of an annual membership contribution, members obtain discounts on their pharmacy purchases (other than PBS items) .

Friendly Society pharmacies are the longest, continuous operators of pharmacies in Australia and UFS Chemist still runs today in accordance with the original principle developed 100 years ago.

UFS Chemist supports the local community providing annual scholarships to four secondary schools, the Mount Gambier Private Hospital Tertiary Fund, sponsorships for a number of local sporting clubs (including football, soccer, basketball and swimming clubs) and community groups, including Women in Business & Regional Development, Mount Padthaway

OPEN GARDENS Gardens from across the South East will feature prominently in the upcoming 2016 Spring calendar for Open Gardens SA. At least seven of the region’s most spectacular gardens from Mount Gambier to Bordertown are expected to open during October and November, and all will help raise funds for various community charities. Three gardens from the Bordertown region will open on the same weekend in October with organisers encouraging visitors from across the region to enjoy a day trip or weekend away while taking a look behind local garden gates. Open Gardens SA is a not for profit organisation which helps allows people to visit some of South Australia’s most exquisite private gardens to the general public. Each garden charges a

small gate fee of $8, with half going back to the garden owners and half to a raft of different charities. Many charities benefit from the program with garden owners often involving volunteers on the gate, plant stalls and morning teas. Last year South Australian garden owners donated more than $60,000 back to charities, with more than 20,000 people visiting open gardens last season. The wider community are encouraged to support the openings and share in the pleasure and knowledge of gardening within their home town regions. The Open Gardens SA Spring Program starts officially in SA on September 3 with gardens opening at Marina and Rhynie. For more information on each garden opening please go to www.opengardensa.org.au

MILLICENT BUSINESS NIGHT OF NIGHTS FROM PAGE 6 More than three decades of serving the Millicent community has been honoured at the Millicent Business Community Awards with family owned and operated business Lonergan and Muhovics Electrical and Pumps being inducted into the association’s Hall of Fame.

Brothers-in-law Terry Lonergan and Dennis Muhovics have been running the industrial, rural and domestic electrical business for almost 35 years, branching out in recent years to supply and install ducted and reverse cycle air conditioning.

Specialising in pump installation and maintenance and all things solar, the Hall of fame honour was recognition of the role Lonergan and Muhovics has played in the local business community, as well as the community at large. Employing 40 staff over its 34 year history, and training up 18 apprentices over the same journey, Lonergan and Muhovics currently employs 10 staff and maintains its commitment to the community through sponsorship and other support for local community and sporting organisations.

Dennis has been involved on school and aged care boards and is arguably best known for his eight year stint as the Mid South East Football League president, where he is a life member thanks to almost 30 years on involvement. He is also currently a Wattle Range councillor.

Terry has a long standing history of involvement with the cricket, football,

bowls and basketball in the Millicent area. “The community is our business and without them we have no business, so we give back because they have supported us,” said Dennis in a recent interview on 5THE FM. He accepted the award in Terry’s absence. Lonergan and Muhovics also took home the Construction, Trades & Manufacturing Business Award.

The other big gong of the night was the Community Spirit Award and that went the way of local radio station 5THE FM. Operating for 23 years and under the guidance of Sheryl and Rebekah Lowe for the past 14 years, the station has taken the “community” aspect of its charter to a whole new level, while also totally transforming the station itself and upgrading the equipment and technology to allow the station to be the best it can be. Rebekah is the face and voice of the station, while Sheryl takes care of the day to day management and it is a partnership that has seen the station become a vital community asset. Newbery Park Primary has formed a wonderful alliance with the station, incorporating a 16 week program into their curriculum with Year 6 & & students learning to produce a radio program which was broadcast live from the mobile studio at the school. 5THEFM has also been at the forefront of many community fundraising efforts.

The Agriculture, Horticulture & Viticulture Award went to ZKEquestrian and owner Zoe Kinley, who offers training across all areas of equestrian pursiuts, while the Hospitality and Tourism Award went to Allan Withers and the team at Hillview Caravan Park. The friendly and accommodating staff, and the attention to detail in the upkeep and cleanliness of the park saw Hillview stand out from the

crowd.

The Retail Award went the way of Foster’s Foodland, an iconic Millicent business, which continues to raise the bar on service and also is a long standing supporter of many community organisations and projects. Brianna Scanlon, from Enchanted Beauty, took out the Service Award, with her superior professionalism and personal approach to each client standing out to the judges.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - OLYMPIAN ETIQUETTE... By ROBBIE TANSEL With the Olympics now finished for another four years, I’ve been pondering what the etiquette is when it comes to Olympic medals. Think about it. 11,551 athletes participated in the Rio Olympics. There were 306 sets of medals awarded across the various sports. That is 306 gold, silver and bronze medals or 918 medals in total.

Considering that there are quite a few athletes who won more than one medal (or hogged them; I’m looking at you Phelps) there are probably about 800 athletes who went home with a medal.

That obviously means that there are another 10,700 athletes who got up at six

in the morning, rode their bike, swam in their local pool, rode their horse, sacrificed having a normal life, and went home empty handed.

Obviously they might have the Zika virus or some sort of life-endangering virus from the green pool, or maybe an unwanted pregnancy from trying to find a shoulder to cry on after losing, but no medal.

So if you are one of the lucky ones to get something shiny to hang around your neck, is it considered poor form to strut around the Olympic village wearing it? Is that just rubbing it in the face of all the losers?

I think we all know that they’re going to act as if they are happy for you, but let’s be honest. They’re athletes and they’ve been told throughout their lives that they’re the best thing in the world.

And suddenly they’ve found out that there’s this country called Kenya and when they run ten kilometres they do it about three minutes faster than guys from Australia. And then there’s this other country called Jamaica where they run really fast and turn around and smile at you as they destroy your dreams.

No one is happy about losing and others winning unless they already have some medals from another Olympics. Or they have the phone number of one of the beach volleyball chicks.

I suspect you’re not going to have many friends if you walk around with your medal on for a couple of days.

The other big question becomes what do you do with your medal when you get back to your room? Wack it in your toiletries bag? Wrap it in some underwear and into the suitcase? You don’t want to get some scratches on it.

It’s a bit of a useless prize realistically.

A lovely gift voucher for Belgiornos or somewhere would be much more practical and sensible. Your medal is going to go in a cupboard or sit on a mantelpiece somewhere gathering dust.

But with your Belgiornos voucher you can get a delicious tropical pizza. Mmmmm.

Pizza.

I’ve got a feeling part of the medal etiquette involves what colour your medal is. If you’re rubbing your gold medal in everyone’s face, I think they’d be thinking, “Yeah we all know you won a gold medal.

Let it go showoff.”

If you were waving your silver medal around I think everyone would be

thinking, “Hey mate, you lost. You were the first of all the losers. What are you celebrating?”

I think celebrating a bronze would be acceptable though. People would be thinking, “Good on you for having a go and scraping in there for a medal. You could have easily missed out and come fourth, but you got one.”

DARTMOOR NAMED TIDY TOWN FINALIST Dartmoor has been announced finalist in four sections of Victoria’s 2016 Tidy Town Sustainable Communities Awards. The township is contesting the overall Tidy Town of the Year, qualifying alongside six other localities in Victoria, recognised for its great presentation and environmentally sustainable community projects. The picturesque Fort O’Hare camping ground restoration project, completed by staff from DELWP (Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning), qualified as a finalist in the Clean Beach/Waterway category whilst the town’s rail land revitalisation has qualified in the Community Action Leadership category.

Meanwhile, the restoration of the town’s iconic woodcarvings is a finalist in the Community Government Partnership category. It is the 31st consecutive year the town has been named a finalist in the Statewide awards program, which encourage and celebrates sustainability achievements across rural and regional Australia.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander applauded the small community’s efforts, noting the work of Dartmoor Progress Association president Wendy Dowling who completed the nomination process. STAR JUNIOR & ON COURT LEADER CELEBRATE 200 GAMES AS CATS ABBEY SHANNON She spent her junior years taking interceptions at will and while A Grade competition is definitely more demanding, Abbey Shannon has developed her one on one defensive effort while still managing to add to her highlights reel with a handful of well timed interceptions every game. A regular member of the Casterton Sandford A Grade team for the past three seasons, the talented defender, who has built a wonderful combination with Tayla Guthrie, celebrated her 200th game on Saturday.

Starting in the 13 & under completion in 2008, where the Cats finished runner-up, Shannon has always shown incredible potential and has basically been playing some kind of senior netball, in C, B and A Reserve grades ever since.

She has enjoyed plenty of team and individual success with the Cats as well as being a regular Western Border representative through her junior years, at both the

Victorian and South Australian championships.

From 2009 to 2013, she was an integral part of finals campaigns for Western Border teams, and during those same years she managed to rack up the 2011 C Grade premiership, as a 15 year old, as well as the 2012 17 & Under title. In 2010 she was part of the 15 & Under runner-up Casterton team, also winning the Western Border best and fairest award that season. From her trademark interceptions when teams dare to take her on across the circle, to her ability to come from nowhere and turn the ball over in the mid court, to her ability to work the ground as well as she can dominate the air, Shannon has completed the transformation from talented junior defender, to respected senior opponent who contests everything and refuses to give an inch.

She is a positive voice on court, no matter the circumstance of the game, and her leadership and enthusiasm for the contest is infectious. Celebrating her 200th game milestone at the weekend, she started with the club in 2004 in the 13 and under competition and has been doubling up in senior ranks for most of her time in her initial stint with the Cats. After she finished high school, she moved away for study but in 2013 she was back, leading the B Grade to a premiership, the same team finishing runner-up the following season.

Tierney also took home the league runner-up best and fairest that season, as well as the same award at club level, and not surprisingly has found herself in A Reserve ever since, as well as playing a handful

of games in the A Grade line-up. Her hard running, good pace and willingness to get to the contest, makes Tierney a hard match and one of those rare midcourters who can genuinely have an impact in all three centre court roles. Great in the air, smart on the feed and able to create those critical turnovers with her defensive mindset, Tierney is a coach’s dream and one of those players first picked to head into the trenches because of her commitment to the task at hand. And it’s not just on the court that Tierney has an impact, she is also on the committee and not surprisingly, a social committee member, her off court enthusiasm as impressive as what she generates on court.

As home to South Australia’s only World Heritage site, the Naracoorte Lucindale Council is embarking on an innovative project to bring greater economic and community benefit to the local area from the iconic Naracoorte Caves.

Council is commencing the Naracoorte Caves Connection Project, which will see the local community take the lead on generating ideas to grow the visitor offering around the outstanding World Heritage values of the area. Mayor Erika Vickery said as home to the only World Heritage site in the State, it was an opportunity to leverage greater economic and community value from the Naracoorte Caves. “During our recent consultation on Council’s Strategic Plan, the message from the community was loud and clear about the unfulfilled potential of the Naracoorte Caves and its World Heritage status,” she said. “This project is a key part of Council’s economic development plan to grow the visitor economy. We anticipate it will be the start of a process to bring more visitors not only to Naracoorte, but to the whole of the Limestone Coast.” Council is overseeing the development of a 10-year Concept Proposal to detail the opportunities for the local area stemming from the World Heritage site, which may include visitor facilities, services, events, partnerships and promotions for Naracoorte. Council will form a Project Group to generate ideas for the proposal, and is inviting local business and community members to register their interest.

“We’re seeking innovative and passionate local people to apply to join our Project Group,” she said. “We’re looking for a diverse group of people with a range of skills and experience who can see the opportunity for our local area and can work together to develop ideas for the Concept Proposal.” The project will commence in September this year, with the Concept Proposal to be submitted to council next year.

NEW ROADS CAMPAIGN VIDEO TO BE LAUNCHED

Glenelg Shire Council road’s advocacy is stepping-up with a new campaign video set to be launched on social media any day now.

Local filmmaker Peter Corbett (pictured above with wife Karen) is completing the final edits to the updated production which details the broken condition of key arterial roads leading to the Port of Portland, which have significantly deteriorated as a result of recent on-going wet weather.

The production is a follow-up to the shire’s first Fix Our Key Freight Roads video which went viral on social media reaching more than 80,000 people and gaining state-wide media attention. The clip also received the support of the state’s peak motoring body, the RACV. The new production, which will be available to view at the council’s Facebook page, has been further supported by the release of a DL promotional flyer encouraging people to follow and share the clip. The flyer has been inserted in all Glenelg Shire ratepayers’ annual rates notices, which are due to be distributed via Australia Post next week. Mr Burgoyne said the council would not “back-down” in its campaign efforts to attract more than $180 million to fix the key arterial routes. “We have made it extremely clear that this funding is a non-negotiable. Our roads are in an appalling condition. The safety of motorists and protection of our export industries, and the jobs it sustains, are dependent on this urgent road repair,” he said. “Council remains optimistic that the State Government will match the Federal Government’s commitment to fix these key arterial routes so we remain competitive in global markets, ensuring exports from the Port of Portland continue to soar.” Meanwhile, councillors have also met with Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell to present the updated Green Triangle Freight Action Plan, gaining her support for the road campaign. Mrs Britnell reported that her office had been inundated with local complaints from constituents concerned about the poor road conditions which were damaging vehicles and slowing down industry.

Mr Burgoyne said it was pleasing that council’s advocacy efforts were receiving ministerial support, with Member for Wannon Dan Tehan also launching his own roads petition in recent days, urging State Government funding. “This is an issue our chamber is not going to walk away from – it is our number one priority,” Mr Burgoyne said. “This is an intergenerational issue. NARACOORTE RUNNER MAKES HER MARK IN THE HEAT OF BRAZIL Take out the fatigue element and it was clear to see Naracoorte’s Jess Trengove and her Aussie marathon team mate Milly Clark were both pleased with their performance at the Rio Olympics. Fellow Aussie Lisa Jane Weightman was also proud to have finished the event, but was hoping for a higher finish than her eventual 31st placing – she finished 17th in London. Clark finished 18th and Trengove 22nd in what was a record field of 141 runners, representing 80 countries. For Jess, it was her second Olympics, finishing 39th in London, and she entered the 2016 Olympic event on the back of some solid form, winning the Melbourne marathon.

While the course was largely flat, the heat on the day of the race provided plenty of challenges for competitors. “The last few days were quite cool,” Jess said, post-race in her Channel 7 interview.” We weren’t sure what we would get today. There was some shade out on course. I think we were well prepared.”

The marathon weaved its way through the CBD and along the beach, which also added windy conditions to the warm conditions, with three 10km loops, and then a slightly different route on return to the finish line.

Jess started the race as a 28 year old and finished it as a 29 year old – her birthday was already officially underway in Australia. She ran the 2016 event in 2:31:44, moving her way through the field with good consistency over the 42km of the race. At the five kilometre mark she sat in 58th, 18 seconds shy of the leader, moving up to 52nd at the 10km mark and then 42nd through 15km, 1:36 behind the leaders.

Channel 7 commentator Dave Culbert described Jess as running a “sustainable race”, with Aussie marathon hero Steve Moneghetti tweeting a prediction of carnage in the final 10km given the conditions. The next five kilometres were the slowest of the race to the point, with Jess again moving through the field to be placed 31st, 2:20 behind the race leader. “In the second half of a marathon you start to draw on a lot more of the motivational,” Jess said, in a pre-race package. “Letters from kids at Naracoorte Primary School where I grew up, messages from coach, family and friends. Thinking of those things help you through the tough times when you don’t want to be tuning into your body anymore.” At the 25km mark, Jess again had overtaken a number of runners to sit 21st, basically holding that position until the line and her official placing of 22nd, 7.40 behind the race leader. Another of Channel 7’s athletics commentary team, Tamsyn Lewis Manou, was full of praise for Jess, who had battled injury coming into the Games. “To miss a block of training

for the marathon shows how tough Jess is.” Culbert also impressed with the Naracoorte marathon runner, both on and off the track, commenting on her positive attitude, work ethic and team spirit. “Every sporting team in Australia needs a Jess Trengove.”

Post-race, she was the unofficial spokesperson for the three Aussie runners.

“More than any other race, we really felt the support from Australians at home,” Jess said. “Thanks to everyone at home.” She said pre-Olympics training in Florida had certainly given the team a good grounding for the eventual marathon conditions. “The humidity (today) was nowhere near what it was in the training camp in Florida,” she said. Praising her team mates, especially Clark, for their good showing in the gruelling event, Jess was ready to relax.

“I think we’re all going to have a fun night and then cheer on the rest of the Aussies.”

She met two of her closest friends for drinks after their trip to the concert was no longer warranted and the conversation turned to the BreastScreen SA visit in Millicent. “They asked if I had booked in for mine yet and I promised to do it

the next week,” Sara said. And that routine check on April 2, 2014, turned out to be far from routine and potentially life saving. On the eve of the ANZAC Day weekend Sara received a call from BreastScreen SA. “They had seen something suspicious and wanted to look into it and so asked me to come in,” Sara said. That saw Sara in Adelaide the following Monday for four hours of tests. “They did think I had something but wouldn’t tell me 100 percent,” she said. She had some biopsies done and then was told to book in with her GP. It turned out Sara had ductal carcinoma in situ – she had breast cancer.

It was a specific form of breast cancer that no amount of self examination would have detected and with no family history, Sara can thank her friends for encouraging her to visit BreastScreen – a slightly uncomfortable procedure that ultimately picked up the salt grain sized cancer cells in her milk glands. An appointment with a specialist was the next step in the process, with Sara able to see the visiting specialist in her home town of Millicent three weeks later.

“He had a look at my film and said it was around eight centimetres,” she said.

The next sentence was even more troubling – she would need a mastectomy.

“I certainly wasn’t prepared for that,” Sara said. Her surgeon offered her the chance to go away and think about it, get other opinions, the works, but in the end, the typically matter-of-fact mother of two needed no time and booked in for the breast removal she would never have dreamed would ever happen to her. “I could have asked for a second or third opinion but they probably would have told me the same and then I would have been back to square one,” Sara said. “Everyone kept telling me it was a good outcome and the surgeon had already warned me he wasn’t one to pussyfoot around. The whole time people were telling me if it is cancer, it’s a good cancer and of course, I thought that doesn’t make any sense to me.” Anxiety also surrounded the fact the diagnosis came the year Sara was turning 46 – the same age her father was when he died. “Things like that did play on my mind,” she said. For Sara, though, being able to have the life changing surgery in her home town, surrounded by the familiar faces of the nurses and her family and friends by her side, made the experience much more bearable. “I couldn’t imagine being in Flinders or somewhere like that and having no one there.” With the surgery completed, Sara’s recovery became a whirlwind – the mastectomy had done its job and she needed neither chemotherapy nor radiotherapy. “I got to keep my luscious locks,” she said. It wasn’t completely simple of course. Sara’s plans of reconstructive surgery turned out to not be feasible and there was the regular draining of fluid from the wound site. Needless to say, early detection is Sara’s key message – if she had not gone and been checked at the behest of her friends, her cancer could have taken hold. “If I had left it even another two years – who knows,” she said. The support Sara received from her husband Dwayne and daughters Georgia and Meg was invaluable. The girls had the usual questions about what caused it and would they get it but for the most part, Sara believes the family, which is honest and open about everything, came through the experience as well as can be expected. “It is what it is and we can’t change that,” Sara said. “I get cross with myself sometimes when I say I am so lucky because at the end of the day I did lose a breast but when there were no consequences like chemotherapy and I only had two weeks off work, it seems lucky, but I did have a scar about a foot long across my chest.”

McGrath Foundation nurse Margie Atwell was a godsend for Sara. “I used to need her all the time but now I hardly even go to the doctors, except for my testing,” she said. The value of the locally produced Helping Hand Bag was another initiative Sara cannot speak highly enough of as she continues to preach the early detection message and the need for fundraising. “I am a great believer in listening to your body,” Sara said.

NARACOORTE CANCER BRANCH FOCUSSED ON FUNDRAISING The Naracoorte Cancer Council SA Branch meet the second Monday of the month from February through to November and have a break over the festive season. We are very fortunate to meet at the Breakfast Room at the Naracoorte Hotel at 7.30 pm. meetings generally go for around an hour and are a good chance to enjoy good company and a chat as well.

We are a small group in number but have wonderful support from the local community when it comes to fundraising for such a worthwhile cause. Within our group we have members that have been through the journey of cancer , some that have lost

a loved one to cancer, and some, like myself, who had no connection at all but just have a passion to help a good cause.

Since joining the group I have lost a good friend to cancer and had three family members go through the journey and this is what we find, even if you have not had a personal experience, most people know someone affected.

We are not a support group as such but raise funds for Cancer Council SA to help with research, discovering new and better treatments, cancer prevention campaigns and support for those affected by cancer. We have Daffodil Day coming up and we will be holding a Trading Table outside Heards Menswear from 8.30am this Friday, so there will be lots of tasty home cooked goodies for sale, as well as beautiful daffodils and merchandise. So we would encourage every one to get behind the cause on Daffodil Day and help make a difference.

Cancer Council is encouraging Australians to ‘text to donate’ and dedicate a daffodil to support Australians impacted by cancer for this year’s Daffodil Day (Friday, 26 August).

For the first time, Australians will be able to use their phones or head online to dedicate a virtual daffodil to someone they know. Selected dedications will then be chosen to feature in the campaign.

All Australians need to do is text HOPE to 1999 8877 and a $5/sms* donation will automatically be incorporated into their mobile bill – a follow-up text message will enable Australians to personalise and share their daffodil dedication. Daffodil dedications will also be available via Facebook and on the Daffodil Day website (daffodilday.com.au).

Cancer Council Australia CEO, Professor Sanchia Aranda, said Cancer Council was one of the first charities in Australia to enable supporters to donate via text, an initiative made possible thanks to the Telco Together Foundation and the Text Giving Working Group, who selected Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day as a pilot program for their premium SMS Mobile Giving Project.

“Daffodil Day is one of Cancer Council’s most well-known fundraising events,” Professor Aranda said. “We want to provide a new and more personal way for Australians to show their support. “More than one million Australians are currently living with cancer or have survived a cancer diagnosis – unfortunately almost all of us know someone living with cancer. FINALS NOW THE FOCUS FOR MILESTONE BULLDOGS TENILLE GRAY (200 GAMES)

It’s hard not to notice Tenille Gray - her distinctive long blonde pony tail, her athleticism and her clinical finishing of every shooting opportunity makes sure of that and it was right from when she first pulled on a netball bib. The star goaler started with East Gambier in 2007 in the 12 & Under grade, playing one game, and 199 games later she racked up her 200th as a Bulldog in the round 15 clash against Casterton Sandford. It wasn’t until 2009 that she returned to the court, progressing through the junior grades and getting a taste of senior netball early in her career. It was in 2013 that she made her A Grade debut with a couple of games at wing attack and from 2014 onwards she has been an integral part of the East Gambier A Grade line-up, developing a formidable shooting combination with Sarah Lock, and the talented teenager is a huge reason the Bulldogs saw finals action for the first time in many years in 2015 and will again challenge for the

premiership. Tenille has a trophy cabinet full of team and individual accolades with a raft of premiership medals, as well as Western Border best & fairest trophies in all three junior age groups – 13 & Under; 15 & Under and she is the reigning 17 & Under best & fairest as well. Her timing on the move, strength in the air, quick hands and accurate finishing makes her one of the toughest opponents at senior level, let alone on the junior court, where she is playing her final year of 17 & Under netball. Not surprisingly, Tenille has a swag of club accolades as well.

Tenille has also represented Western Border and the South East Regional Academy for a number of years and showed her class this year when she was precluded from competing at the SA Country Championships, by still making the trip with her teammates and being an important off court help, handing out advice to the attacking end of the court and celebrating when the girls got the job done and won the title. Already on the radar of Adelaide based premier league clubs, Tenille was last year selected in the Western Border Team of the Year, alongside Donna Denton and Lisa McGregor in the shooting circle – a huge honour as a teenager, especially when it is a team selected by the competition’s A Grade coaches.

could have handed East a grand final berth. Her hands pressure is relentless and her ability to get touches on the outside of the shooting circle is uncanny.

She is also a key transition player with her strong driving through the mid court and she provides excellent voice for her team mates Brenna and Eilish McKay in the defensive circle. Morgan has represented Western Border on numerous occasions at junior level and will again be a key part of East A Grade’s push for a grand final berth and a shot at the premiership this season.

They don’t come much tougher than Morgan Amy. She contests everything, thrives on a tight one on one style of defence, and is prepared to sacrifice her own game to totally shut out her opponent. It was in 2007 that she first pulled on a bib for East Gambier in the 12 & Under competition and she has played junior and senior netball for the club ever since. Morgan has been part of the hugely successful period in junior netball for East Gambier and she has a swag of premiership medals to show for her time as a Bulldog. Morgan was given an opportunity to play A Grade when she was still playing 15 & Under netball as well and she has taken that opportunity and run with it. She started as a tight checking circle defender for the top senior side before making the defensive wing her own and in last year’s epic preliminary final, she was the player who came up with a couple of critical turnovers that

KATE ZVIRGZDINS (100 GAMES) It’s been a long road to 100 games for Kate Zvirgzdins but the tenacious defender finally got to celebrate the milestone in round 15 against Casterton Sandford. Kate started playing with East in 2006 in the 17 & Under team and then moved into the A Reserve until 2009.

Moving away to further her studies, Kate was still involved, always coming to watch games during her university holidays and filling in when required. This year saw Kate return to Mount Gambier for a teaching role, enabling her to take up the opportunity to play again with East. Kate certainly has been a major contributor to the A Reserve team securing a top two and she will no doubt be a key in the upcoming finals series. She is a strong defensive player, who not only makes

Method Preheat oven to 190°C/170°C fan-forced. Line a 12-hole, 1/3 cup-capacity muffin pan with paper cases. Combine flour, cocoa, dark chocolate, white choc bits and sugar in a bowl. Make a well in the centre. Add milk, oil and egg. Using a wooden spoon, stir until just combined. Spoon mixture into paper cases. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until browned and cooked through. ARTS PROGRAM WELCOMES $270K FUNDING The Portland Arts Centre has welcomed $270,000 State Government funding to guarantee the continued delivery of its high calibre arts program.

The Glenelg Shire Council arts program received the triennial funding from Creative Victoria to assist in the delivery of performing arts and culture programs across the shire over the next three years to 2019. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Max Oberlander said the funding would ensure all local residents had access to high quality arts and cultural experiences. “No matter where you live in our community, whether it’s Portland, Heywood, Casterton or surrounds, you will have access to the best performing arts with shows to the standard enjoyed by our metropolitan neighbours,” he said. “We are extremely proud of the current arts program which features world renowned acts. “Our arts program caters for all tastes and ages ensuring everyone can enjoy the creative arts in their home town, in an intimate venue at an affordable price.”

Glenelg Shire arts and culture manager Susie Lyons said her team was looking forward to delivering the busy arts program, in addition to the new Twilight Cinema operation, which is currently being trialled from the Portland Arts Centre. Local Sport PIONEERS WIN THROUGH TO ANOTHER CONFERENCE FINAL It didn’t really go as expected or as the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers would have planned in a perfect world but the outcome was exactly what the reigning South Conference and SEABL champions were after – a win and a home grand final. Brad Hill was sidelined as he battles tendinitis, taking away one of the team’s most consistent scorers. And if before the match you had said guard Tom Daly would be the leading rebounder for the Pioneers, no one would have believed you.

Then there was the skipper Matt Sutton. He has played more limited minutes in 2016 but stepped up to the plate big time on Friday night, hitting four from seven from beyond the arc, to end up with 16 points, playing 31 minutes and ensuring the loss of Hill was not too keenly felt.

It was the second time the Pioneers have tasted victory against the Hobart Chargers on the Apple Isle, and after a tight opening quarter, it was in a blistering second term, that the Pioneers took control. With scores locked away at 29 points apiece Sutton hit one of his four threes to give the Pioneers the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game and it sparked a 23-4 run that saw the Pioneers eventually turn a four point quarter time deficit into a seven point half time lead.

The Pioneers looked to build on that advantage in the third, starting the quarter with a Desmond Simmons three, blowing out to 20 points with four and a half minutes to play in the third, when Tyrone Lee added to his extensive highlight reel with a dunk.

By the final change it was 15 point lead but with a home crowd behind the, the Pioneers knew the Chargers would fight back.

Daly looked to take the crowd out of it early with an early basket from three point territory, but the challenge was mounted, the Chargers working their way back to within eight points, when Shane Southwell and Tom Wright hit back to back threes, and with two and a half minutes still to play, it was game on. But the visitors settled, found their radar again and ran out 14 point winners, bringing yet another South Conference final to the Icehouse pine for home fans to enjoy. It was a critical win for the

reigning titleholders. It gives them a home court advantage and it gives Hill an extra week to rest and recover. Simmons was a key for the Pioneers, finishing the match with a game high 21 points, also pulling in eight rebounds – all on the defensive boards – and also conjuring a steal. He was the go to man in the opening quarter, where he picked up eight of his 21 points, and he also had a huge third quarter, hitting two threes along the way. Simmons was well supported by Sutton (16); Erik Burdon (14); Lee (11) and Daly (10), with Daly also pulling in that team high 10 rebounds. The Pioneers won all the key stats – rebounds, field goal percentage, success from three point territory and finishing from the charity stripe. They did cough up more turnovers, but in the end, keeping the Chargers to less than 70 points for the first time in 2016 and getting the win, means the dual title defences are still well and truly on track.

Hobart takes on Albury Wodonga this weekend for a spot in the South Conference final. Ticketing arrangements for the grand final will be finalised after preliminary final weekend so keep an eye on social media and the local media as well.

TIGERS OVERRUN DEMONS Tantanoola’s season is still alive. The Tigers didn’t enjoy the lead in the Mid South East Football League until about halfway through the final quarter but in less than ideal conditions, the Tigers remain in what is an open premiership race. Played in heavy rain and with more mud than grass on the Kalangadoo Oval, it was Port MacDonnell that got the better of the start and the Demons enjoyed a three goal quarter time lead. That lead was reduced to two goals by half time and despite the Demons dominating possession in the third quarter, they could not translate that dominance to the scoreboard and at the final change it was an eight point advantage. It was all the Tigers in the final quarter, though, and if they had been able to convert their opportunities accurately, it could have been a more comfortable margin. The Tigers slotted 2.9 while the Demons went scoreless, scoring only four points in the entire second half, and advanced to the preliminary final with a 13 point victory. “The game was there for the

taking in the last quarter,” said vanquished coach Leigh Capewell. “I thought our effort was good, it was 100 percent.” With players all but unidentifiable by the final quarter, Tantanoola hit the front around halfway through the quarter, but at the 20 minute mark the lead was only five points and both teams were still in the hunt. “They were cleaner with their ball use,” Capewell said. “We were good for three quarters and then they ran over the top of us. I thought it was a tremendous effort.” The Demons have battled plenty of adversity in 2016, with a number of key players succumbing to injury during the season, but it gave the club a chance to blood eight or nine new kids into the senior line-up. “Every time this season I asked them to step up, they rose to the challenge,” Capewell said. One of those youngsters, Nick Driver, was one of the Demons’ best in the loss. “I thought it was his best game for the club,” Capewell said. But in the end, it was the usual suspects that got the job done early for the Demons – class act Will MacDonald, who would well snare another Mail Medal this week, Ben Mcgregor, on of those players that has battled injury in 2016, and Ben O’Dine, one of those players who is perfectly suited to the hard slog of the heavy conditions. “He just bullocked his way through and kept getting the ball,” Capewell said. Matt Roscow was also one of the Demons’ best, with his ball use second to none in the tough conditions. Victorious coach Jason Dawe said he was proud of his players’ efforts. “We just went really small in the last quarter and the boys really had a crack,” he said. The Tigers even threw talented youngster Bryce Radley into the ruck where his leap was pivotal, despite the fact he was clearly outsized. Brayden Lane was also a key – only one of two players to kick multiple goals, picking up three majors, and in actual, he could have ended up with a bag given the opportunities. “He (Lane) has basically been a B Grade player for us but this year he knuckled down and got a taste,” Dawe said.

And the conditions were certainly in his favour. Not blessed with great pace, Lane used his superior strength and ability to win the ball on the ground to set up his opportunities. Tom Holmes was also a key for the Tigers, his experience, footy smarts and class, leading the way. For Capewell, it was a disappointing end to his time at the seaside – he has handed over the reins to Ben McGregor. Mt Burr and Kalangadoo face off this weekend in the 2nd semi final, with a berth in the 2016 grand final on the line. Tantanoola will be focussing on recovery this week, with the heavy conditions sure to take its toll, but with two

weeks to freshen up, it could be argued the Tigers will be better positioned in the preliminary final than whoever their opponent is, having only a week to recover from a tough second semi. The 2nd semi finals are being played at Kongorong.

Given the age of some of the Tigers, though, this is a team on the rise. Gould certainly held her own in her first senior final and Alana Fensom and Victoria Lucas both showed enough on the wings to show they are players for the future for the Tigers.

For the Demons, Heald continued her stellar form of the past month, while Gilmore and Roach showed great composure on the shot.

Kalangadoo and Hatherleigh face off this weekend at Kongorong for a direct path to the grand final, while the Demons will look to fine tune and find some consistency on the training track ahead of the September 3 preliminary final.

BLISTERING START SETS UP DEMONS WIN The Port MacDonnell footballers got off to a flier at the weekend and so did their netballers.

The difference was, the Demons netballers held on for a win and a spot in the preliminary final. Port MacDonnell were relentless with their defensive intensity in the opening quarter and clinical in their ball movement in attack and the demons had seven on the board before the Tigers fired a shot.

By quarter time the lead was 12, with Sophie Roach and Tom Gilmore making sure their dominance in possession was reflected in the scoreboard, while at the other end, the Demons defenders were on top, Megan Hein and Ash Heald putting plenty of pressure over the shot and rebounding strongly.

The Demons created plenty of turnovers as they worked tirelessly through the mid court to force the Tigers into error and the match loomed as a one sided contest.

But the Tigers were far from done and on the back of a best on court performance from centre Jess Bell, started to claw their way back.

Jami Walker started to find her range on the shot, finishing accurately from all parts of the circle, while at the other end of the court young defender Emma Gould was certainly making Roach earn every possession with her tight checking defence and willingness to contest everything.

In the final quarter, the Tigers were able to

reduce the deficit to four goals but the experienced Demons stood tall and with Roach and Gilmore finishing with clinical accuracy, they were able to extend their 2016 season for at least one more final.

The Demons switched Lisa Fyfe and Megan Hein for the frenetic final quarter and Fyfe’s ability to pull in rebounds certainly ensured any miss from the Tigers shooters was a turnover.

In the end, it was the first 15 minutes that decided the game – that and the difference in accuracy for the two teams.

NATIONAL TITLE FOR BOXER ON THE RISE Bobby Trigg is happy and proud to have claimed his first Australian title as a professional – the Australian Bantam Weight Professional Title earlier this month. But in reality, there was something else about the fight that made him really thrilled – it was the first time he went the distance, the full 10 rounds, in fact, it was the first time he had gone beyond four rounds. For Trigg to last the 10, three minute rounds in only his third professional fight was astonishing – his coach Colin Cassidy had fought 22 times before he was forced to last the full 10 rounds. “He fought at a ridiculous pace,” Cassidy said. “He monstered the guy (his opponent) from go to whoa.” Mark Quan was Trigg’s opponent in the title fight and he certainly held the experience edge. Quan had 88 amateur and 19 professional bouts under his belt, while Trigg had fought 34 times as an amateur and was fronting up for his third fight as a professional. Trigg took the title in the ring at the Melbourne Pavilion and looks set to return to the scene of his triumph for a fight on October 24, which could well see Anthony Mundine on the card as a lead up to his Danny Green clash. He also has another gig, with details yet to be confirmed, in December. “The good thing was, I just felt stronger and stronger as the fight went on,” Trigg said.

Getting the promising 22 year old Mount Gambier boxer to this national title was certainly a team effort.

Fellow Mount Gambier professional Sam Jakutavicius was his corner man and will be from this point going forward wherever and whenever he fights and Trigg’s father David was also ringside to help with the preparations. “Sam is very knowledgeable and could give some good advice,” Cassidy said. “They both had their first pro fight at the same time in Warrnambool.” Zach Doidge has also had a role to play as Trigg’s personal trainer for the strength side of his regime. Both Cassidy and Trigg believe it was that training that helped Trigg cope with his first 10 round bout. That training will now not just continue but ramp up even more, as will the morning runs, and sparring and working out in Cassidy’s gym on a weekly basis. “He only gets Sundays off,” Cassidy said. “When he is not here sparring, he is training in his gym at home, out for a run or working.”

It has been done beore - breaking the 100 goal mark in Western Border A Grade netball - but anecdotal evidence suggests Millicent’s 114 goals against an undermanned Casterton Sandford could well be the highest score recorded. Missing defender Tayla Guthrie and expreienced utility Natalie Rhook, the Cats were always going to struggle anad the Saints were clinical - relentless in defence, keeping the Cats to only 22 goals for the match, and scoring at will at the other end.

The first quarter scoreline was 30-5, with Donna Denton and Nyah Allen missing one apiece. Allen then didn’t rack up another miss until the final quarter, converting 61 from 63, which was a higher return than every other team total in the round of A Grade matches. Denton converted 53 from 57, with the duo enjoying a perfect record in the third quarter.

Motor REVVING UP OUR INTEREST IN HISTORY Colin Thompson was 14 when he restored his first motorcycle, painting it with a fly spray pump. Despite having no family association with motorcycling, it seemed to be in Colin’s veins and he started

racing in 1964, competing in short circuit, speedway and scrambling. For five years, he did the rounds of regional events, but with the sport eating to a quarter of his weekly wage and family responsibilities

looming, the bikes were permanently parked. Not competing did little to dampen his enthusiasm for motorbikes and when he moved to Mount Gambier he met one of this region’s motorcycling icons Ron Hellyer (pictured bottom right).

“Talking to him I was really interested in the story of Mac Park,” Colin said.

“How they established Mac Park in those days with all that work from all those volunteers.” And that’s where the idea for his book about the region’s home of motorcycling was born, the hard copies arriving earlier this month, ready to fill the pre-orders and then some with an official launch on September 6 at 7pm at the Mount Gambier Library. It has been a project nine years in the making, covering from 1902-1949, with Colin spending hours talking to people to gather the anecdotal evidence about those early years. It also meant spending a lot of time researching the pre-war years. “I wanted to preserve the extensive history we have in this area,” Colin said. “It certainly gives a glimpse into life throughout those years.”

For Colin, the story is told through the characters he discovered, like the German and French speaking female shorthand teacher who was prominent in the local motorcycling scene. Then there were the families – the Fox (Laure Fox pictured top right), Walker and Hellyer families – who were all so intrinsically involved in the establishment and development of the local club. “There were basically family

dynasties involved in motorcycling,” Colin said. “And I’ve been so lucky that so many people have been prepared to not just share their memories but also given me photographs to include in the book.” Many people may recognise Colin as the face of the long standing push for a history museum in Mount Gambier. He is passionate about preserving history and has been working, alongside wife Mavis, to see a museum established in the Blue Lake City but years of hard work is yet to amount to anything. “I don’t think I’ll see it in my lifetime,” Colin said. Despite being Adelaide born and bred, Colin is across the history of this region like few others. Moving here in 1972 because it was an ideal place to raise a family, he worked for the Highways Department and Woods & Forests, working extensively in a supervisory role with apprentices.

He hasn’t really worked since 1991 but he has certainly made the most of his time. “People ask how I know so much about this place,” Colin said. “I have just done a lot of research and I’ve got a good memory.” Australian research website Trove has been a godsend for the history buff, who always seems to be working on some kind of project that captures part of this region’s history. Part of the Moto Classica organising committee, Colin has been running a powerpoint presentation, which has run at the past two Moto Classica events, and various other events, showcasing the early years

of motorcycling in this region. Donations have now topped $4000 for charity as a result of Colin airing the historical slideshow. The interest in just this basic slideshow, particularly from younger people, is what makes Colin so frustrated that establishing a museum still seems like a pipe dream. “People are interested,” he said. “Young people are interested and it’s hard not to be concerned that so much could be lost.” Colin’s book – Potholes and Paddocks to the ‘Park’ (Volume I) – was published with the help of Kelvin Ruge, from Blue Lake Printworks, and will be officially launched at the Mount Gambier Library on Tuesaday, September 6 at 7pm.
