Every year the Mount Gambier A & H Society band together to deliver a highly fun filled and admired event, this year is no different.

This year’s focus is on providing entertainment for all ages with many new additions to the line-up of features. Of course the show could not go on without the support of our major sponsor Gambier Earth Movers, who have been supporting this event for many years now.

The program for 2016 sees the return of all things country show, including, show hall demonstrations of arts, craft, cookery and flowers, as well as livestock judging, vintage engines, horse events and woodchopping. But perhaps the place to be will be the Hub area where entertainment will be provided by Adrian Harry’s Xtreme

Motorbike Trials, Circus Elements, DanceXtend, Phoenix Music Studios, Lake City Rock N Rollers, Courtney Holmes Music, Free Mini Golf and various fashion parades. You will find many of our acts performing on a

central stage, kindly sponsored by the Mount Gambier City Council.

The Ag Learning Centre will sure be a hit again with animals on display, as well as demonstrations of shearing,

milking, aquaculture and feeding baby animals, which will be housed in the brand new pavilion. The trail has been revamped this year as The Mount Gambier Spring Show Treasure Hunt, as sponsored by Lime FM. This is again one for all ages with the chance to explore the show by picking up a show bag and following the path to collect free giveaways.

The main show hall will also be alive with free photobooth by Funky Flix, scrapbooking workshops, spinning and weaving, kid’s horticulture and many trade stalls. The newest addition of all is the inclusion of a trade marquee where you will find even more trade stalls as well as demonstrations by community groups such as Blue Lake Aero Modellers and Mount Gambier Men’s Shed.

The show will conclude with a performance from the Tenison Woods College Drum Corps and a fireworks display not to be missed.

The 2016 event is held October 21st and 22nd. Ticket prices are Adults $16, Children (5-16 years) $8, Pensioners $10 and Family $38 (family ticket admits 2 adults and 2 children or 1 adult and 3 children). Children under 5 years are free. Car parking available at $3. Gates open at 9am daily.

SIGNING OFF Last Friday, Jason Scheidl hung up the headphones for the last time as his more than two decade career in radio came to an end. The voice many across Limestone Coast people have shared their breakfast and commute to work with since 2001, on both 96.1 STAR FM and most recently, 5SE 963 AM, enjoyed his final shift with the Southern Cross Austereo network, as he looks to catch his breath, focus on study and tackle new challenges in 2017. “I’ve been doing a similar job full time since 2001 and you have to keep evolving and create new ideas,” Jase said. “That gets tougher and tougher.”

If you’ve ever heard Jase on air, been at an outside broadcast or attended a community function he has emceed, you will be aware of the passion he has always had for his radio role but with his drive and passion waning, the time had come. “Out of respect for this company and radio, in general, I am not prepared to do a mediocre show,” Jase said. “It is also about respect for the audience.”

And he certainly isn’t stepping completely away from the industry.

He has spent the past nine months working on Tenison Woods College media studies curriculum and working in the classroom with students and that has reignited his high school aspirations of being a teacher. “To be able to show kids that you can build a career in your hometown without having to go to university or moving away has been fantastic,” Jase said. “I did have an interest when I was at high school

in teaching and then things went a different direction but I have enjoyed being in that school environment.”

Jase is unsure what 2017 will hold with Tenison Woods College but he has loved helping put together the curriculum, and he is now studying to boost his educational qualifications. “Hopefully there will be an opportunity there (Tenison),” Jase said. And study will be the focus for the remainder of the year as he enjoys his long service leave.

“It’s been an extraordinary ride, and I’m so lucky to have started and built a career in my home town,” Jase said.

“I’ve done a lot of fun and silly stuff in my time on radio, but the highlights for me are the moments that have involved the community. I love this region and appreciate the support it has shown me during my time on air.”

And he has no intention of fading into the ether. He still has a number of gigs as MC for community events in his diary and he has every intention to continue his involvement in community activities. “As a person in the community I think it’s important to give back a little bit as well and to give some of your time.”

There have been plenty of career highlights for the much loved announcer with his 2008 national award arguably the stand out. Jase and his co-host at the time won the National Radio award for Best On Air Team, which saw he and former local Josh Torney stand on stage alongside national personalities, Hamish and Andy.

he realises the bug to be on air might bite again. “If that happens I will drop my resume in here (5SE) and drop my resume into the ABC and start again,” he said. “I would happily go back to 5GTR and build from there again if I had to.” But at this stage, it is all about the next phase of his life, and the chance to influence a new generation.

This week sees an all too familiar voice taking over the airwaves with Paul Barry at the wheel, before the new on air talent heads into the studio some time next month.

And just as Jase has turned down opportunities to move elsewhere throughout his radio career, he has no intention of leaving this region now either – he just wants to direct his energies elsewhere. “I had been trying to fight off this feeling of needing a change,” Jase said. “But after starting at 5GTR as a 15 year old, it is time.”

It was Jase’s love of music that saw him venture into the radio studio. “I had a couple of mates that were doing things at GTR and it was the only FM station at the time, and the station I listened to, so I went along to have a look.” He was quickly signed up as a volunteer and the rest, as they say, is history. He took on panelling of 5SE’s sports show in 1999 before securing the 96.1 STAR FM breakfast gig in 2001.

“It was the opportunity of a lifetime,” Jase said.

Heading up the breakfast shows, on both the FM and AM bands, saw Jase have to hone his skills as an interviewer and build up a general knowledge base that took him from, local sport to council news to what’s on at the art gallery. “It did take a while for me to gain that respect from the people I was interviewing,” Jase said. “I worked hard to get that respect, though, making sure no matter the topic, I knew what I needed to be asking. Not every issue is of personal interest but you are there to present it for the audience.”

And he hasn’t totally closed the door on what has been a huge part of his life. While he has declined the offer to stay on as a casual, relief announcer,

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - DEAR ROBBIE XXIV... By ROBBIE TANSEL It’s been a while since I’ve received any emails from my wonderful readers. I’ve been getting plenty of postcards which has been very cool so a big thanks from the postcard industry. I think we’ve saved three jobs there. Anyway I got an email over the weekend and thought I better share it.

“Dear Robbie, I witnessed some disturbing actions on the weekend, and I feel that you may be the only one with any sense to help society out.

I went to watch the AFL grand final with a couple of mates at a local Hotel, and experienced something that

hopefully words can describe.

No, it wasn’t all the die hard Footscray supporters who’ve been hiding since 1954. No, it was the fact that I witnessed a ‘Shoey’.

If you don’t know what a ‘Shoey’ is, Robbie, according to the Urban Dictionary, a shoey is pouring an entire alcoholic drink into your shoe and skulling it.

Now I don’t mind the odd frothy while watching a game, out of a clean cold glass.

I have drunk alcohol out of a variety of vessels, anything from a schooner to a shot glass, pint to a pony, butcher to a bucket, I even stooped as low as drinking warm emu bitter from a plastic cup.

My doctor said it was ok, but only in moderation. But this group of youths were having a ‘Shoey’…in public.

But it wasnt just any old shoey, Robbie. Maybe if I was a rock-n-roll star and wanted to impress the crowds, I could pull off my size nine Converse All Stars and drain the contents of a VB stubbie for a hard earned thirst.

Robbie, these young blokes were drinking out of a rubber boot! Yes, a rubber boot! What has society come to!?!

If this latest fad turns into our newest addiction, where do we turn? I am worried for our farmers. They have been hit by floods, droughts and low milk prices.

The last thing they need is a gang of youths sneaking on their properties in the middle of the night to steal their best pair of wellies just so they can feed their drinking habit…or drink their drinking habit?

But then what? Gumboots won’t be cool enough. Will we find kids in the gutter drinking martinis from moccasins?

A long island iced tea from their long johns? I don’t want to think about it.

Help me Robbie. Ash from Allendale” I’ve got to say Ash that I share your concern. You’d have to think that it sends a bad message to the establishment as well.

Essentially you’re saying to them, the cleanliness of what I drink out of is of absolutely no concern to me.

I’m happy to drink out of a dirty shoe so there’s really no need to clean your

glasses either.

Regarding your concerns about rubber boot theft, I’m almost more concerned that they may return the rubber boots after they’ve been using them as a receptacle the previous evening.

That’ll be an unpleasant start to your morning as you get ready to go milk the cows and find yourself with a squishy inner sole that’s soaked up a variety of alcoholic beverages.

With this disturbing trend I’d be advising all farmers to keep their rubber boots under lock and key…or to make sure they’re particularly filthy and covered in cow pat.

I don’t want to add to your problems Ash but let me share something with you. Did you know that water is completely free at the pub?

When word gets out about this, how will breweries make any money? Who is going to spend their hard earned money on a beer when they can get an equally refreshing glass of water free of charge?

It’s crazy. Are pubs trying to go out of business?

We probably better try to keep that one to ourselves, but if you start finding when it’s your mates’ round they seem to be buying “water”, you’ll know that you’re not the only one who reads my nonsense and the word is out.

NEW LOOK FESTIVAL TO CELEBRATE SENIORS

PARADE ENTRIES CLOSING SOON The annual Mount Gambier Christmas Parade is fast approaching on Saturday, November 19, and organisers are keen to get plenty of community based floats entering the event. The closing date for entries is October 31.

Its lots of fun to be involved and it’s a great way to encourage creativity and teamwork - whether you’re a business, a school, sporting club or a community

A number of free or subsidised events will be hosted by the District Council of Grant this month to celebrate the valuable contribution the senior population have made, and continue to make, to the community. Senior Festival events will include lunches, presentations and tours being held at various locations in the district.

District Council of Grant community project officer Linda Hay said the format of the celebration had been changed this year to allow the senior population to mix with different people from across the region, while showcasing some of the towns, businesses and attractions.

Free events include a behind the scenes tour of the Mount Gambier Airport, presentations about Christmas Island and the amazing red crab migration, and an Antiques Roadshow type event with local auctioneer and personality Kevin McVilly. The Port MacDonnell & District Maritime

Museum will also be offering free entry for any senior person all day on Wednesday, October 19.

Lunch will be held at the Shipwreck Bistro in Port MacDonnell, while Adam Branford will share his adventures crossing India using a rickshaw at lunch at Tarpeena’s Pines Hotel, and Bruce Rodda will give his engaging perspective on our potatoes, pines and lobsters at a Rocks Tavern luncheon.

One free lunch during the festival will be provided to any District of Grant senior resident.

“Council will pay for its senior residents to have lunch at one of the three on offer during the festival, and people may also like to attend and pay for the others themselves,” said Linda “We invite anyone over 55 to attend as many of the events as they wish.”

Bookings are required for most events as there is limited seating at venues, and is a requirement for

lunches. group. Even individuals or families can get involved as a themed mobile entry in the parade. There are prizes for the best float or entry in each of several categories.

There are already nine brass bands entered in the parade, and as usual, they’ll be competing in the annual Mount Gambier Brass Band Festival at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre - the now traditional festival that runs in conjunction with the parade weekend.

As a prelude, the bands will perform a massed march along Commercial Street East from the Old Town Hall to Crouch Street at 10.15am on the morning of the Christmas Parade another long standing tradition made possible by the festival attracting more bands to the local Christmas Parade.

The parade starts at 11am from Crouch Street then proceeds westwards along Commercial Street, ending up at the Vansittart Park corner.

The Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West’s Party in the Park in the Cave Gardens precinct also continues as the traditional post-parade celebration, featuring a great range of food and drinks, music and entertainment and lots of activities for children. Father Christmas will be in attendance to speak to children about their Christmas present wish lists.

Member for Wannon Dan Tehan confirmed more than $658,000 for the highly anticipated project which will include a Visitor Information Centre, café, meeting space and amenities. LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT Nothing tests a relationship like renovating – it’s why so many viewers tune into reality series The Block, it’s as much for the fights, tantrums and tears, as it is the design tips.

But John and Michelle Discianni decided to take the plunge and transform a 1930s house into their 21st century dream home. “We always wanted an older home,” Michelle said.

“Although neither of us had even done any sort of renovations.” And when they first looked at the Bay Road

property it was love at first sight. “It was really bright and we just loved the feel of it as soon as we walked in,” Michelle said. “Of course there was the location as well.”

The property had been on the market for a long time and ironically one of the key selling points for Michelle and John, could well have been a reason others let it pass. “It was a smaller block than most of the Bay Road properties but that was what we were looking for,” Michelle said. “We

didn’t want a garden.”

The couple bought the Bay Road property in June 2010 but not much work was done before John was struck down with a heart attack. Thankfully he recovered well and by the end of the year, the Discianni renovation team was back on the job. And it certainly was a lot of hard work in a house where there was a whole lot of gutting that needed to be done. “We basically did all the demolition work ourselves and it was hard work pulling out things and getting the house to a stage where the tradesmen could come in and do their thing,” Michelle said.

The couple removed the ceilings, ripped off wallpaper and took out all the old wardrobes, spending weeks with tools, dust masks and flexing their muscles. “We basically brought it back to a bare shell,” Michelle said. “In the end in each room we were just starting

over from scratch.” The rear garden also had to be removed to make way for the new section of the home and the outdoor decking area.

Michelle, an interior decorator for the past 11 years and one half of the Décor House team, certainly had her vision for her home but make no mistake, John also had a clear vision for how he wanted things to look. “We both had a clear vision for each space and we really didn’t disagree on much at all, if anything really,” she said.

And once the demolition side of the project was done, the couple only had to concern themselves with the finished look. “We had tradesmen do all the work once we had brought it back to a shell,” Michelle said. “We wanted a good professional finish.” And not only did the old part of the house require extensive work, there was the entirely new back section, which is the couple’s kitchen and open plan dining and living area and the outdoor deck area, which also needed to be completed.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT The extensive construction work required at the property gave Michelle and John ample time to focus on the styling of their home and obviously through Michelle’s work she would sometimes stumble across pieces that would be perfect for the Bay Road home. They didn’t totally discard everything from the 1930s house.

Many of the doors have been recycled in other areas of the home,

and the front door is the original, complete with leadlighting. “A lot of things didn’t match,” Michelle said. “I think that’s what makes the place feel comfortable though – in an old house nothing is ever perfect and it’s what makes it feel like a home.”

They even sourced an old study door from a friend and once he saw it in its full glory he wanted it back. “Never going to happen,” said Michelle.

The couple also restored the front of the house to its original look without even realising it. “We were shown some photos after we had done all the work and there is a photo from when the house was first built and the front now looks identical to that again,” Michelle said. “Funnily enough it was the front of the house that I knew how I wanted it to look straight away – the first time we saw it.”

The home’s fireplaces, while not in working order, add another old style fee l to the home thanks to being lovingly restored.

Sometimes, too, all it took to transform the look of a room was a simple makeover.

The front sitting room had an archway leading into it – double French doors and an overhaul of the space either side of the fireplace, which is now stylish shelving, has made the room cosy and elegant.

You certainly can’t question Michelle and John’s attention to detail. They

removed the skirting from right through the old house and replaced it with the skirting being used in the new section so as to bring some uniformity to the look.

And then there’s the sentiment as well – the antique sewing machine which is a key feature of the new living rear living area belonged to John’s

mother. And not all of the furniture is new – Michelle simply used her expertise to transform many of the pieces the couple already had by recovering them.

While both Michelle and John wanted modern conveniences and technology throughout their home, both were very committed to an old world look, sourcing old floorboards from Warrnambool to ensure the new section enjoyed that continuity of look and feel. In fact, if Michelle had to describe her style as a decorator it is traditional with a twist of classic modern. Despite boasting a heritage look, the home is still environmentally friendly. “Even when you’re renovating an old home and you want it to reflect that era, you can still make it green, it can still be sustainable,” John said.

Solar panels and hot water system are a major part of that concession to the modern world.

the Discianni transformation and love it. “They can’t believe how different it looks,” Michelle said. “When Miss Childs owned the home, every room was filled with dolls from her vast collection.” The only exception to that was what the family called the Christmas room – a room Miss Childs filled with her festive decorations for the 11 months of the year they weren’t needed.

It took the best pat of two years but

THE GARDEN THAT TOOK A DECADE TO CREATE If you want to see what someone can achieve once their kids leave home then look no further than Cobi & Cary Jennings’ garden. The 16 Turnbull Avenue garden, that has been more than a decade in the making, is again part of the Open Gardens South Australia scheme so on November 12 and 13 you can see for yourself just what a little bit of extra free time does.

“I probably didn’t really get into the garden until the kids grew up and out on their own,” Cobi said, “You know how it is.” And so when Cobi and Cary built their first post-children home, Cobi created a stunning garden. “But it was a small block and I ran out of room,” she said. But now she has an acre block to play with and play she has. Surrounded by a hedge, which was critical in the recent wet and windy conditions, protecting her garden from the elements, ahead of its November showing, the project has been a wellordered process. The eastern hedge was the first installation at the Turnbull Avenue property, followed by perimeter bark to keep onion weed at bay. “We brought in eight truckloads of bark which I proceeded to spread with a bucket and my gloved hands,” Cobi said.

“It took me four months.” The southern

hedge was next, followed by perimeter plantings of roses, agapanthus, trees and daylilies, as well as a sprinkler system. Cobi then afforded herself some serious thinking time to plan the rest of the space, which is on quite a steep, sloping acre block, as the couple focussed on building the house for the next two years. With the plans in place, it then all came down to manpower as truckload after truckload of top soil was transported and spread and the large feature moss rocks were put in place. Bricks for edging, a box hedge, the conifer slope and the azalea bed all then took shape as magnolias, wisteria, camellias, pear trees, bulbs, bearded iris and flowering cherry trees were all added. “I just kept expanding the more and more ideas I had,” Cobi said.

“The biggest challenge is fitting your ideas into the space.” And those ideas included water features, moss rock steps, a pond, arches and a vegetable patch. The water features were also lucky to survive the recent wild weather.

“I went round and laid them all down so there was no way they could get damaged,” Cobi said. Things didn’t stop there. “A friend gave the greenhouse to us,” Cobi said. And so orchids, cyclamens and ferns became part of the

Jennings garden which to this point had been a five year project. A boardwalk has been added in the steep part of the garden and at last count, Cobi tends to around 600 roses. Needless to say, there is a fair amount of work that goes into maintaining the space, although it is mainly in the lead up to each November showing that Cobi has to really ramp up the hours she spends tending her pride and joy. “It is not that high maintenance, I usually spend maybe 10-15 hours a week out there,” she said. “But it is a lot more leading into the open garden, which we always have in spring because it’s when the roses look their best. It’s like getting a house ready for open inspection.” It will come as no surprise to know that Cobi is a member of two locally based garden clubs – the U3A Garden Club and the Mount Gambier Country Garden Club, a group of which she is vice president.

The U3A group usually attracts around 10-12 people to garden visits, while the Mount Gambier Country Garden Club has 70 members and usually attracts 50-60 to each meeting, which usually involved a garden tour. “It’s a great way to get ideas firsthand,” Cobi said. “And we discuss what has worked for us and what hasn’t.” Cobi is also an avid reader of all the usual garden publications and tunes into television shows that feature the latest in garden tips and trends.

The Jennings Garden is open between 10am and 4.30pm on November 12 and 13, with a plant sale on November 13.

MILLICENT BOWLS SEASON IN FULL SWING

The first Millicent Bowling Club champions of the 2016-17 season have been crowned. Charlotte was successful in receiving financial assistance of $200 from council’s Youth Development Foundation to assist with costs to attend and compete in the School Sport Australia 12 & Under Netball Championships which was held from 27 August to 2 September 2016, in Melbourne.

Charlotte was selected as a member of the State SAPSASA Netball team following a series of trials and she also represented the region in the Mid South East Netball SAPSASA team.

LACHIE’S PURPLE REIGN

Kybybolite’s Lachie Neale has capped a personally stunning 2016 season by taking home the Doig Medal - Fremantle’s best & fairest. Polling 200 votes, Neale, in his fifth season of AFL, took the top gong from Stephen Hill on 170. Prior to this season, Neale had never managed a top five finish but his record breaking year that saw him break Matthew Boyd’s record for most disposals in a regular season, finishing with 737. The gutsy midfielder polled votes in every game except round 14 against Collingwood.

“This is very humbling,” Neale said. “To be amongst some of the names that have won this award in the past - Pavlich, Fyfe, Sandilands, Mundy and Bell - it truly is a privilege.” Neale was taken at pick 58 in the 2011 draft and has played 92 games for the Dockers. “Although it was a disappointing year for the club, we can take a lot from it,” Neale said. “I know this group’s pretty resilient and we’ll bounce back quickly.” Neale arrived at the club in the same year as coach Ross Lyon. “He’s (Lyon) been huge in my development - both on and off the field,” Neale said. “I credit a lot of this (winning medal) and my development to Ross.” Neale picked up 20 Brownlow votes in 2016 and was part of the initial 40 player All Australian squad. His 2017 pre-season will be slightly interrupted due to recent shoulder and wrist surgery.

Neale also collected the Players’ Award and the McDonald’s Fans’ Most Valuable Player award at the club’s presentation night on Saturday night.

STATE SELECTION FOR LOCAL SOFTBALLERS Mount Gambier softball continues to produce quality talent with six locally grown players earning a call up to South Australian line-ups for upcoming national championships. As previously reported, Mackenzie Millard was selected in the SAPSASA team to compete in Werribee next month, where she will be joined by Padthaway’s Poppy Moyle-Read, with Penola duo Jake Klemm and Aaron Zerk and Kalangadoo’s Thomas Jerome in the boys SAPSASA line-up. Tanya Hood has also been handed State honours, named head coach of the Under 17 team. All six of the girls named last week at Under 15, 17 & 19 teams have all previously represented South Australia. The Hood sisters, Millard sisters and Imogen Walker are all playing for Adelaide based club Seacombe Tigers on weekends, while Jenna Burston is recovering from a knee reconstruction.

A couple of new motors arrived for Mount Gambier based sprintcar driver Steve Lines this week after being held up in customs but it was a case of too little, too late for the 2013/14 World Series Sprintcar champion in his quest to claim the USC SA title in Murray Bridge. Lines (pictured below left) won his opening heat, finishing fifth in his

second heat but it was enough to see him placed third on the grid for the A Main feature. But he was unable to take his place when his only motor blew and his night was over. With his spares sitting in customs, Lines was pragmatic and has already set his sights on Avalon Raceway in Geelong this weekend.

(below right) had a consistent night, finishing fifth in his opening heat and second in his second heat and ended up 15th in the A Main, our of a field of 20.

ANOTHER STRONG NATIONAL RESULT FOR KARTER

Hot on the heels of claiming his maiden Australian Karting Championship, Mount Gambier karter Kai Allen has had another impressive result, finishing second in the Rotax Protour National Series. The seven round series wrapped up in Dubbo on the long weekend, with Kai entering the final round in second place and maintaining that position, in the mini max 12 & under class. It was the previous weekend that Kai took out the 2016 Cadet 12 Australian Championship with the youngster set to compete out of age group in 2017, as well as heading to international competitions.
