COVER - AWARD WINNING BROKER RIGHT ON OUR DOORSTEP Born and bred in Mount Gambier, Jamie Hunter cut his teeth in the motor industry and when he was looking for a new challenge, it seemed a natural progression to move into motor and property insurance assessing.

His first role in the insurance caper was in sales and service for a rural insurer, working in the Tatiara district, travelling daily to service his wide variety of clients.

His office might have been based in his hometown, but there was still plenty of time on the road as he services clients not only in Mount Gambier but also towns including Naracoorte, Penola, Millicent, Robe, Kingston, Coonawarra and Keith.

The more Jamie worked in the insurance sector the more he learned and the more he wanted to be involved, so in 2011 when a rural insurer looked to close its regional branch network, Jamie and his wife Janelle chose to become authorised representatives developing a base of direct customers across the entire South East of South Australia.

Fast forward a few years and in search of greater independence, Jamie and Janelle purchased a small QBE Agency and additionally made the important choice of joining Insurance House as an authorised partner.

THOMAS SECURES FAMOUS FIVE It seems there’s no stopping Thomas Hynes. The 19 year old from Warrnambool claimed his fifth successive SA Power Networks Blue Lake Fun Run, smashing 45 seconds off his previous record benchmark for the event to complete it in a time

of 34.15. The 3.2km competitors had barely started their trek up the Bay Road hill when Hynes was powering back to the finish line after his two laps of the Blue Lake. “I love coming to this event,” Hynes said, after crossing the finish line. “And I’m really happy with

the time.” Hynes trains in Warrnambool, with a focus on the 10,000m, although his schedule is in a lull at the moment before heating up for a summer series.

In 2017, he is set to continue his training with half marathons next on the agenda. Steven Maxwell, in a time of 38.51 finished second to the blistering Hynes, with Michael Cocks (39.01) finishing third. Cocks has also competed in the Hawaiian Iron Man, and his Blue Lake Fun Run time also saw him take out the over 50s category. TrudyAnne Bedson was the best of the over 50 females that tackled the 10.4km course, in a time of 52.06. At the other end of the scale, 16 year old Jett Attard (43.20) was the best of the Under 18 males over the top distance and Loulou Teate (52.46) was the best of the females. It was a repeat winner in the women’s event as well, with 2012 champion and 2013 runner-up Nikki Smart, from Lucindale, claiming the title in a time of 40.39, only slightly slower than her 40:20 that saw her finish second in 2013, and better than her 40.43 winning time in 2012.

Community Update Mayor’s column Mil-Lel Show I was honoured to open the 78th Annual Mil-Lel Show this year. The District Council of Grant are proud supporters and sponsors of this event. The weather was fantastic, and the family friendly, affordable show was well attended with plenty of things to do and be entertained by. Fire Danger Season Late November sees the start of the fire season. The extended growth has seen an increase in fire fuel loads in the district. Council staff and contractors have commenced roadside slashing, forest owners are preparing fire breaks and slashing boundaries, Local government across SA have prepared policies for use of our equipment and staff. Prepare for the fire danger season by planning well in advance for those hot north winds. Help your neighbours, cut the roadsides, have your fire equipment ready for use.

The proposed site is in Wattle Range on our boundary at Tarpeena.

The feasibility study for the new particleboard mill will include the latest technology from around the world, value adding the pulp wood from the pine plantations. The opportunity of employing another 50 full time staff with the ripple effect from construction to production may see many more employment opportunities within our region.

Pelican Point The storm events and damage caused over recent years see the District Council of Grant working with local landowners, Coastal Protection Board and ERD Court to find a solution to protect these properties. Initial design work and estimated costings has seen the affected landowners asking more questions to begin to progress towards a solution. Council have yet to decide on what they will do to help and the costs to be borne by them along the coastal stretch that is under their care and control. It includes access points to launch on the beach and a STED Shed for the common effluent system.

The District Council of Grant, Wattle Range Council, Glenelg Shire and the City of Mount Gambier continue to work with cruise directors that plan to visit the Port of Portland allowing passengers to travel within our respective areas. Visitors will see and experience what we have to offer and, for many, it will undoubtedly be the first time they have visited our region. A good experience and taste of what our regional producers can offer may see them come back for extended holidays. Next season five cruise ships will dock in Portland with many more coming the year after which will have an economic stimulus for tourism on either side of the imaginary line called a border.

Seniors Week 19-28 October The District Council of Grant sponsored events for people over 55 who have and who continue to contribute to make our area great. Council staff did an exceptional job organising and coordinating the program with over 120 people participating from all over the district. Thank you to the Victoria Hotel, Pines Hotel and the Rocks Tavern; and guest speakers Sharon Bruhn, Kevin McVilly, Bruce Rodda, Ian Fritsch and Adam Branford.

As part of our river and coastal planning strategy and funding from the Boating Facilities Fund, new floating pontoons and redevelopment of the landing will be undertaken early next year at a cost of $120,000. The removal of the old structure and replacing with floating concrete pontoons will allow easy access to and from the river. This will also allow an even surface to fish from and allow wheelchair access to the river.

Tenders will be called for the project once this preliminary work has been undertaken. The District Council of Grant has been given an overview of the project by the Corrections Department. Council have no say on the project, we are provided with details for planning approval only.

Briefing sessions have been held for prospective lead contractors. We are advocating for local contractors to tender for work on the $58 million project. I would expect that local tradespeople will pick up a large share of the work. The employment and weekly spend within the Mount Gambier city precinct is significant for goods and services under the management of G4S.

Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards The District Council of Grant sponsored the Agri-Business award with the winner being Fennell Forestry, a major employer in our district. The Chamber’s Chair, Lynette Martin, as part of her speech remarked how the District Council of Grant “failed” with their application for grant funding for the Airport expansion project, and didn’t say that the Racing Club were also unsuccessful along with all other applicants in the Barker electorate. As the Council that owns and operates the Airport our staff and consultants are working hard to continue to seek Federal funding and other opportunities. We are hopeful our Local Members can assist with our endeavours.

Statutory Authority Review Committee Enquiry into TAFE SA The review was held at the Mount Gambier TAFE SA campus on 27 October with the Hon JM Gazzola (Presiding Member), the Hon RI Lucas MLC, the Hon SG Wade MLC. Along with myself and other representatives of our region including Mayor Andrew Lee, Mark McShane, Mayor Erika Vickery and Dominic Testoni, Limestone Coast Local Government Association, Barbara Lightburn and Lew Parsons from Regional Development Australia, gave presentations and answered questions on the demise of the TAFE SA system and what as a region we would expect and how the State and Federal government should fund further education and training.

The main points to the demise of the 100 year institution came about through the Skills for All program that was rolled out without appropriate planning or controls to ensure the training offered would not only meet current standards but would make people job ready and have the skills to be employable. This added to the Federal Governments push to open up the training market to allow more private providers.

No one thought it through from the bureaucrats to parliamentarians how private RTO’s needed to make

profits and unscrupulous ones took advantage and trained people for the sake of training without getting the desired outcomes and were only in it for the money with their training not up to any current standards.

The Legislative Council members were told the facts about how the respected TAFE SA reputation had taken a battering and that the need to preserve Regional TAFE SA campuses and the course offerings to suit our area needed to be funded appropriately.

TAFE SA has for years changed lives and trained people for employment opportunities and enhanced skill levels in our community. Education is an investment for the future of our young people whom we need to train and retain in our region for our future generation. Treasury and budget underfunding will not lead to the outcomes our regional communities expect or deserve. I am hopeful that the Legislative Council got the message from our region that reflects our needs and aspirations.

The current situation is that TAFE SA is in crisis due to treasury demands which needs to be addressed, job losses will only lead to the further demise of this training organisation with just under 400 positions still to be lost, the regions being hardest hit with Campus closures etc.

Local Regional TAFE Management needs to be re-instated so we can determine our own training needs with appropriate staffing and budget to be able to deliver what we expect. Bricks and mortar need to stay, that added to face to face delivery underpins the value of regional campuses to the community they serve and it should not be negotiable for us to stand by and just let them be taken from us.

CEO’s column Donovans’ Landing Council applied to the South Australian Boating Facility Advisory Committee for funding to replace the existing landing at Donovans. Council were successful with the application and are currently working through final designs and options. It is anticipated the Council will complete the tender processes in 2016, with construction occurring in the 2nd quarter of 2017 to ensure minimal disruption to users of the Glenelg River.

Boat Ramp Fees - Port MacDonnell Offshore Angling Club Council and the Port MacDonnell Offshore Angling Club (PMOAC) have been in discussion for some time over the future use and fees payable by PMOAC and its members.

Council has reconsidered its position on a number of occasions with our final position being that: • PMOAC volunteers that assisted in the construction of the original Boat Ramp will receive free life time membership and use of the boat ramp; and • PMOAC Members in 2004/05 and that have remained members to date, will also receive free life time membership and use of the boat ramp • All other users or members of PMOAC that don’t fit into the above, will be required to pay normal boat ramp fees from 1 July 2017.

Council sees this as a fair and reasonable approach in that it recognises those people and members that were involved and engaged in the activities of the PMOAC at the time that they handed the Boat Ramp and associated facilities back to the Council.

Community Engagement In 2016 we have successfully trialled a more informal approach to community engagement, which replaces our previous approach of holding some 13 Township Meetings. Elected Members and Council Staff commenced the year visiting the community of Donovan’s in March followed by Carpenter Rocks in May. More recently we combined with the Tarpeena Progress Association by having a Sunday brunch in October. All the communities

visited so far have been well attended providing them the opportunity to outline priorities and suggestions. A visit to Port MacDonnell is planned for 1 December 2016 with a sausage sizzle being available from 6.00pm at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex.

Our approach has been to engage with the community on priorities for future services or projects, and using the various Masterplans adopted (Port MacDonnell Masterplan, River and Coast Masterplan, and Tarpeena Community Plan).

Mount Gambier Airport On 23 June 2016 the State Government announced they will invest $2.95 million towards the upgrade of the Mount Gambier Airport. The upgrade will cater for larger aircraft and enable additional services for larger charter flights, and potential freight/export hub capacity.

Council continues to liaise with State Government to finalise details of the funding, and what conditions may be attached. Unfortunately Council’s National Stronger Regions (Federal Government) funding application was rejected but we continue to explore discussions and opportunities with private sector interest from a freight perspective, and this could include private investment towards our intended Stages 1 or 2.

With the Christmas period fast approaching I can advise that Council’s main office in Commercial Street West will be closed from close of business on Friday 23 December 2016 with staff returning to work on Tuesday 3 January 2017. The Port MacDonnell Community Complex will be operating throughout this period, with the exclusion of Christmas Day. Our Airport will also operate as normal through this period (with the exclusion of the public holidays).

Our Saleyards will hold its last sale for the year on Monday 19 December, and will be closed from Thursday 22 December with staff returning to work on Tuesday 3 January 2017. The first sale for 2017 will be held on Wednesday 4 January with a Store Sale on Friday 13 January.

Smart gave birth to twins Hughie & Shayla only eight months ago and has also been busy in her podiatry business, which has been rebranded your Podiatrist, in partnership with Bryce Strachan and there were 16 in the inaugural your Podiatrist team in the 2016 Blue Lake Fun Run. Katie McDonald (48.06) and Staci Faulkner (48.58) filled out the minor placings in the women’s 10.4km event. In the 6.8kn event, it was a case of third time lucky for East Gambier footballer Scott Brooksby. Finishing third in 2014 with a time of 27.19 and second last year in a time of 25.29; Brooksby finally got to stand atop the dais with a win from Joel Griffith (27.46) and Jack Lockwood (27.53). Brooksby’s winning time was 26.10. The female winner over the 6.8km course was 2014 winner Caitlin Dyer. First winning the event as a 10 year old in a time of 29.56; Caitlin missed last year’s event due to sporting commitments in Adelaide but returned at the weekend and in a time of 29.07, the Westminster School Running Club member recaptured her crown. Eleven year old Abby Smith (29.36) finished second with Tess Kenseley third. The 3.2km event was a classic double act with 10 year old Jonty Collins (12.41) taking out the male category and lifestyle1.net | 08

6.8km female winner - Caitlin Dyer mum Rosie (14.27) the highest placed female runner. Jonty finished ahead of Charlie McArthur (12.56) and Brayden Burston (13.07), while Rosie pipped Nicole Moran (15.01.2) and Jade Delaney (15.01.4). Major event sponsor SA Power Networks was represented by Acting Operations Supervisor (Mount Gambier) Chris Carter, with a number of novelty prizes also handed out for best dressed.

The strong presence from schools was also rewarded with Reidy Park and St Martins Lutheran College taking out the Mount Gambier awards for best representation, Glenburnie School the best of the Grant District Council schools, Mark MacKillop Memorial School topping the class in Wattle Range and Dartmoor Primary School also being acknowledged. Proceeds from the 2016 SA Power Networks Blue Lake Fun Run will go distributed to the Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service, the South East Junction Mental Health Activity & Resource Centre, the Mount Gambier City Council Disadvantaged Youth Sports Scholarships, St Martins Pedal Prix, Friends of the Library, SES, Laura Small and Mount Gambier Concert Band.

AWARD WINNING BAND WELL & TRULY ON THE MAP Being named the Most Popular Rock Artist at the recent Music SA Awards has already opened quite a few doors for Mount Gambier grunge act Recreator. Coinciding with their announcement as a finalist, in the award they would eventually win, was a surge in international interest and 2017 looms as a very busy year for the band on the rise.

“It is still surreal to tell you the truth,” band member Nathan Jenner said. “I still feel detached from it. One minute we were on stage and the next we were back at work like nothing happened.”

But happen it did and there is plenty now emerging for Recreator both here and in the United States and Canada.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Season the steaks and cook for 3-4 minutes each side (for medium-rare) or until cooked to your liking. Set aside for 4 minutes to rest. Slice. Add stock mixture to pan. Cook, stirring, for 1-2 minutes or until sauce thickens. Divide rice among serving bowls and top with beef. Drizzle with sauce and sprinkle over shallot.

That has seen the band look to release a second single into that market and that will be in all likelihood Halo.

As a result of the Music SA honour, the music festival market is also opening up domestically, and if that won’t keep them busy enough, they are also looking to head back into the studio with Tom Wilson at Bad Animal Studio to record their second album – their first was under the guise of Cornerstone.

“Tom does a great job and we think it’s good to support locals,” Nathan said.

Aside from gigs at the Mid Coast

Meltdown at Port Noarlunga in late February and a kids cancer charity in Adelaide in April, Recreator has been approached about a number of metropolitan based gigs.

And while those opportunities are amazing, they will still perform locally whenever possible and a music festival at the East Gambier Football Club will be one of those performances.

Nathan is also hopeful the new album, when released, might secure Recreator some airplay on Triple J or Double J. “That’s the dream really,” Nathan said. “Every band wants to get played on the Js.” Some work in Melbourne is also on the horizon as Recreator looks to continue to build its profile.

LIBRARY2GO PLANS TO EXPAND

Glenelg Libraries popular mobile library service is considering options to expand its reach across the shire. Public feedback is sought on a possible extension of the Library2Go service to communities such as Narrawong and Nelson.

The outreach service currently visits Dartmoor, Digby and Merino on a three week basis providing the regional communities with access to more than 500 library items including the latest release books, DVDs, music, magazines, and audio books. The vehicle also has wifi connectivity, allowing users to relax in the chairs and beanbags provided under the vehicles large awning to relax and surf the net. Glenelg Libraries manager Yvette Parker said the service had been a “success” and it was time to identify other shire communities which would benefit.

People are invited to provide their feedback on the new locations at the Your Say Glenelg website (yoursay.glenelg.vic.gov.au).

CHRISTMAS APPEAL SET TO RECEIVE FUNDS FROM UNLIKELY SOURCE

On offer are 17 creative, and rather kooky gnome creations, designed by students and staff of Mount Gambier’s Independent Learning Centre earlier this year, as part of the city wide gnome hunt which accompanied the Riddoch Gallery’s Endless Pleasure art of gardening exhibition. Gnomes are curious creatures by nature, yet this group are bound to turn more heads then most. Exhibited publicly as a group in the Main Corner for the first time, some of the fabulous creations include Gnome Heart – GI Gnome – Paint Ball Gnome and Australia’s most notorious bad guy Ned Kelly Gnome. The gnome project has been one of the more unexpected creative collaborations in the city this year.

This auction provides an opportunity for people to keep a slice of our City’s artistic history, and re-home a gnome. 100% of all sales will go to the Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. The Gnomes are currently on display at the Main Corner. Bids close at 4pm Thursday, December 8.

A NEW SET OF WHEELS FOR DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAM Since 2013 Geared2Drive, run by the District Council of Grant, has been supporting local youth in obtaining their Provisional Driver’s Licence.

Now, after three successful years, the program has secured a new Hyundai Accent Active, for the volunteers and participants to use, thanks to the team at the Barry Maney Group. Geared2Drive is a learner driver program developed to support young people to gain their Provisional Driver’s licence, which they are unable to gain through their own means. The program focuses on training in safe driving, risk management, communication and managing peer relationships, with the goal of minimising the risks young drivers face on our roads. As of June this year, the program has received more than 100 participant applications, utilised 14 volunteers and had 30 young people obtain their Provisional Licence with the

program clocking up more than 1230 driving hours. This year, Geared2Drive was awarded a Local Government Professionals SA Leadership Excellence Award in Community Services. District Council of Grant Mayor Richard Sage said that council continued to be committed in maintaining the five day a week program but can only do so with the support and generosity of its volunteer mentors and a range of local community groups, businesses, and government bodies who assist with both advice and funding. Council acknowledges and thanks the Barry Maney Group, who continue to support the program by maintaining the specially equipped vehicle that they provide at a highly discounted price. Without a contribution such as this, Council’s Geared2Drive Program would not be available to help the youth in our district to develop safe driving skills and discover their

GARDEN PARADISE OPENS ONE MORE TIME FOR CHARITY Cobi & Cary Jennings are long time supporters of the Open Gardens South Australia scheme but this year, the

weather got the better of their usual two day event and so they are opening their garden one more time in 2016 on

Sunday, December 4. Their original date was the weekend of November 12 & 13 and while visitors enjoyed the garden on the Saturday, the Sunday was a no-show thanks to wild and woolly conditions.

The Jennings have rescheduled the second day for two reasons – one, so many people missed out on what is one of the city’s most talked about gardens, and two, to raise more funds

for their chosen charity – Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The acre block has been an empty nest project for Cobi, in particular, and were it not for the surrounding hedge, the damage from the recent wild weather could have done more damage to the well-planned haven.

And while much is made of the more than 600 roses in the 16 Turnbull Avenue garden, there are features everywhere you look.

The eastern hedge was the first installation at the Turnbull Avenue property, followed by perimeter bark to keep onion weed at bay. “We brought in eight truckloads of bark which I proceeded to spread with a bucket and my gloved hands,” Cobi said. “It took me four months.”

The southern hedge was next, followed by perimeter plantings of roses, agapanthus, trees and daylilies, as well as a sprinkler system.

Cobi then afforded herself some serious thinking time to plan the rest of the space, which is on quite a steep, sloping are block, as the couple focussed on building the house for the next two years.

With the plans in place, it then all came down to manpower as truckload after truckload of top soil was transported and spread and the large feature moss rocks were put in place.

Bricks for edging, a box hedge, the conifer slope and the azalea bed all then took shape as magnolias, wisteria, camellias, pear trees, bulbs, bearded iris and flowering cherry trees were all added.

“I just kept expanding the more and more ideas I had,” Cobi said. “The biggest challenge is fitting your ideas into the space.” And those ideas included water features, moss rock steps, a pond, arches and a vegetable patch.

But things didn’t stop there. “A friend gave the greenhouse to us,” Cobi said.

And so orchids, cyclamens and ferns became part of the Jennings garden which to this point had been a five year project with a boardwalk also pone of the more recent additions “It is not that high maintenance, I usually spend maybe 10-15 hours a week out there,” she said. “But it is a lot more leading into the open garden, which we always have in spring because it’s when the roses look their best. It’s like getting a house ready for open inspection.”

The Jennings Garden is open between 10am and 4.30pm on December 4, with Maxine Tuffnell and her cancer support group colleagues holding an afternoon tea for patrons. Entry is $8, with concessions available.

Gluten free deep dish pizza 1 cup warm water 2 teaspoons dried yeast 1 teaspoon caster sugar 2 cups gluten-free plain flour 2 teaspoons gluten-free baking powder 1 teaspoon xanthan gum Pinch of salt

1/3 cup polenta 2 tablespoons olive oil 420g jar cherry tomato and basil pasta sauce 1 cup grated reduced-fat pizza cheese 100g thinly sliced 50% reduced-fat gluten-free mild Hungarian salami Fresh basil leaves, to serve

Method Preheat oven to 230°C/210°C fan-forced. Using a fork, whisk warm water, yeast and sugar in a small bowl until yeast dissolves. Set aside in a warm place for 5 minutes or until foamy. Sift flour, baking powder, xanthan gum, salt and polenta into a large bowl. Add yeast mixture and oil. Mix until dough just comes together, adding an extra 2 tablespoons warm water if necessary.

Grease two 20cm-round springform cake pans. Line base and sides with baking paper. Using lightly floured hands, press half the dough over the base of each pan and 1cm up the side. Spread tomato sauce evenly over each prepared base. Sprinkle with half the cheese. Arrange salami over cheese.

Bake one pizza for 15 minutes. Sprinkle evenly with half the remaining cheese.

Bake for a further 10 minutes or until base is golden and cooked through.

Repeat with second pizza. Carefully remove hot pizzas from pans. Transfer to a chopping board. Sprinkle with basil leaves. Cut into slices. Serve immediately.

THE BEST OF WATTLE RANGE ON DISPLAY With 70 artists on show, including half that are new to the Wattle Range Art Exhibition, the Millicent Art Gallery is well worth a visit between now and December 10 when the exhibition winds up. The 2016 event attracted 165 entries, with judges art educator Deb Rogers and new Riddoch Art Gallery director Dr Melentie Pandilovski suitably impressed with the standard of competition. Exhibiting artists hail from across this region, South West Victoria and Adelaide.

Tanya Hunter, a winner of the prestigious John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize and a talented artist across many mediums won the Mixed Media category with Malevolence, a striking moody evocative seascape and boat and she was also the joint winner in the Mayoral Award with The Yellows of May, which reminded Mayor Gandolfi of a June winter landscape. Tanya was a new entrant to the exhibition and is fast developing a reputation as a fine artist.

Casterton artist Colin Tennyson was the other joint winner of the Mayoral Award with his portrait of Margaret Ollie.

Runner up in the mixed media was a beautiful, simple yet intricate piece, all in white, by Marg Hage, titled The Promise of White. With an experimental piece, Cherries of the Golden Soil, from Cate Bell finishing third.”

Runner up was local artist Loretto Cataldi, with his first landscape in 25 years, a fine painting of Lake McIntyre, which represented one of Millicent’s tourism icons. Runner up was a beautiful colour drawing of a dog from Donita Heath, titled Farm Dog. That piece was purchased on the night so she also received a commission.

Textile art was a very competitive category with Gill Oswald Jacobs, from Casterton, winning with a beautiful woven basket utilising dyed fibre and wool. Mount Muirhead’s Julianne McEwen was runner up, capturing the light and depth of the landscape.

Julianne Woodruff’s dress and wrap was third. Sculpture always brings to the fore beautiful work across found objects, timber and industrial pieces. Cate Bell’s One Happy Sucker, a sculpted decorated vacuum cleaner was the winner, Ralph Rigney’s amazing and beautiful Snake was runner up, with Penola artisan Guy Detot third. The Barbara Wallace Ceramic section was small but represented Barbara Wallace’s work and passion, with Peter Woodruff the winner with a small Raku bowl.

Titled Earthfire, runner up was Julianne Woodruff with a beautiful Blue ceramic tray, titled Wavelines. Youth artist Jamie Woo,d from Lucindale, and Millicent’s India Strother were awarded achievement awards for youth. The exhibition runs through to December 10.

DOING IT FOR THE KIDS - 2016 TOY RUN The Toy Run is on again.

Motorcyclists will be riding from Mount Gambier, Millicent and Naracoorte, assembling at the Shell Service Station in Penola, leaving at 10.30am and heading in convoy and gathering with other riders at The Market Place. Father Christmas will join the riders and lead then along Penola Road, Wehl Street North, and Commercial Street West before heading to the Valley Lake. “We are looking forward to spectators waiving and cheering as we leave The Market Place and certainly hope to see many more children and families along Commercial Street,” committee member Rory McEwen said. “We also welcome visitors to the Valley Lake where we hand over gifts and donations to St Vincent De Paul.” Catering is available at the Valley Lake and Toy Run badges will be available at assembly points and the Valley Lake. The Police and S.E.S. go to a great deal of trouble assisting in traffic management and organisers ask motorists to be patient to allow riders to flow through as a group.

HAMILTON AIRPORT WINS NATIONAL AWARD THE GIFT OF READING Hamilton Airport has taken out the Small Regional Airport of the Year last week at the Australian Airport Association (AAA) Awards. The Award was accepted by Director of Infrastructure David Moloney at an awards dinner at Parliament House in Canberra.

Council received the award for the recent redevelopment project at the airport, particularly for its focus on local content throughout the upgrade with works being delivered by a local civil contracting company and incorporating local materials suppliers. More than five hundred airport industry leaders and representatives attended the event along with the Commonwealth Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, the Hon Darren Chester MP and the Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, the Hon Anthony Albanese MP. The $5.2 million upgrade at the Hamilton Airport included an upgrade to the terminal, strengthening and resealing of the apron and taxiways, a new LED apron and runway lighting system including floodlighting of the apron, new office buildings, expansion of the car park and installation of a Precision Approach Path Indicator System (PAPI) to provide guidance information to help pilots acquire and maintain the correct approach.

The upgrade also included the extension of the existing North/South runway to a length of 1700m. The runway extension allows for larger

aircraft to land, bringing a wide range of benefits to the region including increased employment and investment, as well as improved social and community opportunities.

Mayor Cr Mary-Ann Brown said the award was appropriate recognition of the hard work which has gone into the Airport Redevelopment. “I thank all those involved in the delivery of this project. The Hamilton Airport has been a very significant project for Council, which was many years in the making.

The Hamilton Airport is an important community and strategic asset for our Shire and has an integral role to play in supporting Hamilton’s role as a regional centre in South West Victoria.

Council has worked hard to ensure that Hamilton and the wider region will continue to benefit from this facility well into the future” Mayor Brown said.

The award win comes on the back of Council’s plea for support for a trial return Passenger Air Service for the Hamilton Airport. “We’ve invested heavily into our Airport and we believe a regular passenger service is necessary to further support the many possibilities the Greater Hamilton region has to offer. We need support in the form of financial investment from the community and regular usage to make the return of passenger air in Hamilton a reality,” Mayor Brown said.

It was smiles all round on Monday as Melaleuca Park Primary School junior primary students were presented three new books of their very own. It was the second presentation ceremony this year for the students in what has been a joint project between the school, Mount Gambier Library and Rotary Club of Mount Gambier. Books in Homes is a national program, that was an initiative of New Zealand author Alan Duff, of Once Were Warriors fame, and has been running across the Tasman since 1995.

The program aims to kickstart the book collection of young students and if the reaction in July to the initial presentation of three books is any indication, it is a program that is bringing joy and the magic of reading into the lives of the students, which range from Reception to Year 3. Monday’s presentation ensured each student now has six new books, some of which they personally chose from a catalogue of options earlier in the year. “We aim to give each student three of their four nominated choices, as well as obviously a couple of other books they might enjoy,” the Mount Gambier Library’s Teresa Nearmy said.

“It really is different giving a child a book they can keep, rather than borrowing something from the library. It is a really cool initiative.” The Rotary Club has funded the program, the library, under the guidance of children services development officer Kelly Lynch, has administered the program and Melaleuca Park’s Natasha Hemmings-Dunn has coordinated the students involved.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - LIVE WHILE I’M ALIVE, SLEEP WHEN I’M DEAD... By ROBBIE TANSEL I was writing last week about how much torture it is sitting through a meal with a four year old.

One of the things that makes it worse is knowing what will come next. You see, after enduring the four hours of trying to get him to eat three peas and a couple of bites of something else, you then have to convince the child of the importance of sleep.

Children don’t think sleep is important. It’s quite an unusual situation really. Donna and I realise that sleep is really quite important. We haven’t had much of it over the last four years. The reason for that is Shaquille. He hasn’t slept much over the last four years either, but he doesn’t see that as a problem at all.

Essentially we’ve had the same amount of sleep, as when he wakes up yelling and screaming, it wakes us up and we are awake until he goes back to sleep. The lack of sleep seems to have totally different results on us however.

In the morning Shaq wakes up full of energy, ready to do what he does every day: not sit still for more than ten seconds at a time, talk incessantly and drive his parents bonkers.

We get up like we’ve only slept for half an hour, which is approximately how long we have actually slept. We drag ourselves into the day, knowing

that at some point later in the day we’re going through it all again.

It doesn’t matter what we do during the day either. We’ve tried to wear him out but he has a literally endless supply of energy. We can keep him on the go all day and it won’t make any difference to our ability to get him to sleep.

Our nightly routine involves moving him into his bedroom at 7:00 for a story.

We provide him with some lovely warm milk hoping that will make him a little sleepy. It would probably be better to get him to watch a lifestyle television show.

While he drinks the milk, we read him a story. Calling it a story is probably a stretch to be honest, because the plot of these things is atrocious.

Half of them have talking animals which is ridiculous.

The authors focus on making everything rhyme rather than on building a believable premise. I mean a talking cat is bad enough but why would a cat wear a hat?

No wonder Shaquille doesn’t sleep.

He must spend the night thinking “If a cat wore a hat, wouldn’t they then wear a complete outfit? Surely if you’re going to go to the trouble of putting on a hat for sun protection, you’d put some pants and a shirt on. This story has more holes in it than a golf course.”

With the story out of the way, a kiss goodnight and a lullaby, we’re up to the part of the night where the child gets out of bed every three minutes. He will apparently need a drink. He will need to go to the toilet. Having gone to the toilet he will been to top the tank up again with another drink. That will lead to…you guessed it, the need to go to the toilet.

He will be hungry. He will be cold. He will want his Winter pyjamas on. He will want his Summer pyjamas on. He will

The television I am watching will be too loud. He will need the light in the corridor on. No off. No on.

The interesting thing is that the little creature that is normally one of the loudest beasts on Earth becomes incredibly stealthy and able to sneak out of his bed like some sort of a ninja. We don’t hear a thing and then we notice he’s standing silently behind us.

I do wonder if he has some sort of an allergy to sleep. I don’t know if it’s even a thing but if it is I’d like to know if there’s some sort of medication that can be used to treat it.

It doesn’t really matter though I guess. A wise man once said, he’d live while he was alive and sleep when he was dead.

PORTLAND’S HANLON PARK TO BE LIT-UP Plans are being made to transform Hanlon Park into an elite night sporting ground with an application being formulated for new lighting. Glenelg Shire Council last week voted at its ordinary council meeting to apply for a $100,000 State Government grant to support the project which will light-up the grounds oval and netball amenities. The Portland Football Netball Club applied to council seeking support for the new lighting, which will include four 30 metre lights surrounding the football oval and eight 12 metre high lights for its two netball courts.

The current lighting does not meet required minimum standards to ensure player safety and useability of the space. Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the new lighting would assist to attract premier games of football, cricket and netball to the precinct.

“Portland is playing in one of country Victoria’s major country football and netball leagues and it is pivotal that it has premier facilities to support it in an effort to attract finals and ensure the best playing conditions for its players,” Cr Rank said. “Furthermore, this new lighting will allow for other year-round recreation activities such as carnivals and community events at the CBD space.Council is proud to support its recreation clubs to assist in attracting greater player participation and create more community events to ensure we have a healthy and active community.”

Community consultation was completed on the lighting project over the past month with feedback sought on the Your Say Glenelg website, in addition to letters delivered to more than 680 residents surrounding Hanlon Park.

MOUNT GAMBIER WINS

ALYSSA IS A TRUE ALLROUNDER Alyssa Humphries is definitely an allrounder. Not just in the cricketing sense of the word, where she bats in the top order and is a change bowler, as well as wicketkeeping, but as an athlete in general.

Recently selected in the Western Waves Under 16 squad to play in the Victorian Championships in Melbourne from January 11-13, Alyssa is not just a cricketer on the rise, although after she would be hoping to go one better than she has the past three years by making the final cut for the State team. Alyssa, though, is also a football star on the rise and is no slouch at netball and basketball.

She has been a netballer since she was nine, playing for Casterton Sandford and is also a club basketballer, a game she started as a seven year old. Milo Cricket is what developed Alyssa’s love of cricket and she plays at club level as well as the Western Waves, the regional pathway team.

Auskick was her path to football and she now clocks up more than 300kms each week, playing for the Ararat Storm, Western Rebels and now the North Ballarat Rebels, where she survived an initial pool of more than 80 players looking to be selected in that talent academy to make the final 40. It was a long road to the talent academy, firstly earning selection for the Western Rebels and getting a chance to play in Moe for the VLine Cup. That competition included a talent search and it was from that point that Alyssa survived trainings to make the final cut of 40. Every Monday night, she heads to Ballarat for training. The academy started on November 15 and runs to December 12,

with a Christmas break before training resumes in January for a block of five games in February against the other academy teams. Usually playing in the forward or backline, with some time rotating through the midfield, Alyssa is one of the many female athletes thrilled at the inception of the AFL Women’s League and the more genuine pathways in cricket as well – two sports more traditionally considered male dominated. “It is very exciting that there are genuine pathways now for females in cricket and football because now we have the opportunity to play the sports we like without us having to stop or quit at the age of 1314 because they think we will get hurt in football or there were no opportunities,” Alyssa said. “It is so exciting that my ultimate goal at the end can now be playing AFL or cricket for Australia.” If she had to choose, Alyssa would head down the AFL path but while she can continue playing multiple sports she most certainly will. “I would pick football to play at the highest level because I like the physicality of football and every kid dreams of playing in the AFL,” Alyssa said. Not surprisingly her sporting hero is Kaitlin Ashmore, a female AFL player for the Brisbane Lions, and a former assistant coach at the Ballarat Rebels Academy.

“She was also involved in supporting Ararat Storm in our finals series and a bit throughout the season, and was always giving us little pointers and heaps of advice about our game,” Alyssa said.

The Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association took on the best of Portland cricket on Sunday and came up trumps. South Gambier’s Robbie Drenthen skippered the side, which also included Jake Blackwell (West); Jake Schutz (North); Matt McInerney (North); Dylan Clough (South); Dion Stratford (East); Jacob Parham (South); Ash Dumigan (East); Alex Hentschke (Kongorong); Josh Fidler (Mil Lel) & Michael Waters (Kongorong). The match was played at Henty Park and was a 50 over-a-sde contest. Mount Gambier won the toss and elected to bat on a difficult looking pitch, with Stratford, Dumigan and Blackwell the best with the bat. The boys then got the job done with the ball, in a very even performance, with some lapses in concentration from the Portland vats allowing Mount Gambier to secure the victory.

LATE SOUTH RALLY FALLS JUST SHORT The clash between South and Federal was a tight tussle and with suspended senior players Bruce Morale and Travis Lockwood still sidelined, a younger South lie-up certainly pushed the reigning titleholders. Alex Reppin continues to produce solid performances and could well have clinched another three votes on Friday night, while Wade Chant added another three safehits to his five from last week. Veteran Scott Simpson was also in form in the batters box with three safehits as well. Doe South, Ben Morale was key with the bat with three safehits, while Dean Hamilton, who led from the front all night, picked up two hits as well as putting in a good performance from the mound. But in the end, trailing 11-6 at the bottom of the ninth, South showed great character but fell one run shy in the final washup. On Saturday night, both Central and Tigers were undermanned and in the end, the experience and quality of Dylan Chuck shone through, leading the way from the mound with 15 strikeouts and also getting the job done with the bat, finding safe territory twice. Ven Atkins and Kyall McClean also secured two hits apiece and in the end some costly errors from Tigers proved decisive, as Centrals took advantage with some aggressive base running. Tigers young gun Brandon Telford continued his solid for with the bat, picking up two safehits, as did Jesse Foster. This weekend, Federal and Central go head to head on Friday night and South will welcome back Bruce Morale and Lockwood against Tigers.

There is a strong South East flavour in the South Australian Outbacks team for the 2017 Australian Country Cricket Championship. Heading to the Wollongong event as defending champions, the Outbacks boast four players currently plying their craft in the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association, as well as two players, who started their careers in the South East. Mil Lel duo Josh Fidler, who was in last year’s championship winning team, and new recruit Alex Garlick, along with East skipper and wicketkeeper Dion Stratford (pictured right) and Penola allrounder Kieran Ashby are all in the 14 man squad, with former Yahl player Matt Dyer and Millicent & District Cricket Association star Ben Parish, both who were part of the 2016 winning side, are also part of the 2017 team. North Gambier’s Matt McInerney is the emergency for the Outbacks line-up. The national championships run from January 3-11.

South East Tennis Players travelled to Murray Bridge earlier this month to participate in a tennis challenge with the Riverland, Fleurieu Peninsula & Murray Bridge players on lawn courts in very windy conditions. Local talent Trish Douglas won the ladies event.

The November 21 SE Veterans Tennis event was hosted at the Mount Gambier Tennis Club courts in Heriot Street. Naracoorte’s Nancy Martin won the ladies event from Mount Gambier’s Wendy MacDonald. Alan Rex (Mount Gambier) won the men’s event from Naracoorte’s Peter Barry. Next event will be a Christmas theme held at Wattle Range on December 11 at 10am. Lunch will be provided.

SE VETERANS GOLF Last week a large field of 79 South East veteran golfers travelled to the Penola Golf Course on a rather warm day, and scoring was good, with 39 points from Swampy Wright winning first division, with the runners-up being Trev Hutchesson and Alan Schultz, with 38. Second division needed a threeway countback on 38 points, eventually won by Bob Childs from Kenny Milsop and Adrian Thiele. The

NTPs were 9th, Phil Hunter, and 13th, John Shirley.

The prized Ross Orchard trophy was taken out Ginge Norman and Phil Richards, and balls were issued for 33 or better. Organisers are hopeful that now the better weather has arrived, numbers will continue to be up. The last event for the year is at Millicent on December 5.

Above - Centrals Crouch Shield allrounder Dewain Barrett has had two phenomenal rounds of cricket, making an unbeaten 106 in his side’s win over West Gambier and then the following round clubbed 107.

The unbeaten 106 included 12 fours and five sixes, while the 107 agaisnt South included 12 fours and four sixes.

Above - North Gambier Cox Bros top order batsman Steve Fisher is also in stellar opening season form, securing an unbeaten 161 that included 18 fours and one six. Barrett and Fisher join Luke Rainey and Matt McInerney who have also made three figures in season 2016/17. There has been a handful of players dismissed in the 90s.

with nowhere to go after some carnage on the track ahead of him.

But it was better news for Glen Sutherland, who has had a stunning start to the 2016/17 season and while

he missed the podium he finished a credible fifth and sits atop the points board for the series, 14 ahead of Jye O’Keeffe.

Sutherland won his first heat and was seventh in his second and started the A Main in the second row, alongside another of the 2016/17 in form drivers, David Murcott.

It was in the second lap of the race, where Lines started on row four, that is all went wrong for Shaun Dobson, hitting the wall in turn two in a collision that sent him sprawling across the track and leaving Lines as one of the three other drivers caught up in the carnage and forced out of contention.

Following the Dobson incident, Sutherland was on pace and sitting fourth, losing that standing when Tim Van Ginneken found a way past the Mount Gambier driver with five laps to go and from there Sutherland was able to stave off the other challengers and remain in fifth place, and, in turn, the series leader.

EXTRA PUBLIC TRANSPORT A WIN FOR BUSINESS The introduction of additional V/ Line services into Portland will support business and tourism growth, according to Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Anita Rank.

The State Government last week announced 12 new train services to Warrnambool each week supported by new coach services connecting to Portland on a new timetable set to be introduced in the New Year. The additional services include a 9.05am service from Warrnambool to Melbourne and new service from Melbourne to Warrnambool at 5.13pm, connecting to Portland and South Australia. Final details are yet to be confirmed on the connecting bus timetable which is anticipated to be at more reasonable hours.

Cr Rank said the new services were excellent news for the Green Triangle region as it provided more flexible travel times for passengers, supporting business and tourism trade. “This is a fantastic announcement for our region which we envisage will bring significant benefits to our community,” she said.

“Council has been advocating for these additional services for some time in an effort to bolster our economy and attract business growth.

“These extra services will provide greater links for business into Melbourne, and vice versa, these transport connections make it easier for our city neighbours to connect for business and trade.

“Furthermore, the more attractive times make connecting to Portland and the broader shire more desirable for tourists as you are no longer forced to arrive in the early hours of the morning.

“It is also a win for health and education with passengers provided with a more flexible timetable to reach Melbourne medical appointments, or to arrive at a university tutorial at a manageable time.”

The new V/Line timetable, which includes 80 extra V/Line services state wide, will begin on 29 January 2017. The timetable will be available for download from 5 January 2017 at www.ptv.vic.gov. au .
