SE FIELD DAYS • ALMOST FOUR DECADES OF ENTERTAINING & EDUCATING For almost four decades the South East Field Days have provided visitors with the most eclectic offering of entertainment; trade displays and competitions and in its 39th year, the March 17 & 18 event again boasts a jam-packed program. A merger of new headline attractions and the old favourites that keep people coming back year after year, the 39th South East Field Days at its Lucindale home of Yakka Park, has maintained that tried and true formula. The Howling Huskys Show and the South Australian Police Dixieland Band are the marquee events on the 2017 program. Having Australia’s other working dogs performing alongside the Coprice/ Elders 2017 South East Field Days Yard Dog Championships will be a treat for visitors as they gain an insight into the

husky breed. The Howling Huskys Show performance is a fun and suspenseful display of six sled dogs attached to a dryland buggy. The team can easily pull more than 400kgs, more than four times their own body weight. The dogs love to wow audiences with their strength, determination, excitement and intelligence and thrive on crowd involvement making for a highly interactive display. The show ‘s first priority is entertainment but it does have an educational element as staff explain how a sled dog team works by comparing the different roles of each dog. The origin of the breed and the history of the dogs on display are also incorporated into the performances.

The SA Police Dixieland Band is performing both Friday and Saturday in the ELAD Shed. The six piece traditional

Dixieland ensemble features string bass, drums, clarinet, trumpet, trombone and banjo and plays a mixture of traditional Dixieland classics, as well as new arrangements of the classics with a modern twist, courtesy of the two of the band’s talented members, that write their own music. The polished and energetic band is playing at 10am, 12noon and 2pm on Friday and 10.30am and 12noon on Saturday.

The Lions Mobile Skin Cancer Screening Unit is also set to be a major part of the 2017 event. It will be in Lucindale on March 15 and 16 initially and appointments can be made by calling the South East Field Days office on (08)8766 7001. The mobile screening unit will also be at site R2 at the field days for walk up consultations.

Another health focussed initiative is the Wimmera Hearing Van. Sponsored by the South East Field Days, the van is a long time visitor to Yakka Park and will call site 669 home in 2017. “We encourage especially farmers to go and get a hearing check,” field days secretary Lyn Crosby said. “They have been coming for years and always pick up things for a lot of people.” New on the calendar in 2016, the Castec Billy Kart Competition returns this year, along with the long standing Elders

The yard dog championships are also a huge drawcard as some of the best dogs and their handlers converge on Yakka Park to showcase the intricacies of the working dog’s life, while the Lucindale Engineering Puppy Pound rates off the cute scale. TERANG TRAINER QUINELLAS THE GOLD CUP As predicted the Mount Gambier Pacing Gold Cup has headed to Victoria with Terang trainer Matt Craven not only securing back to back cups but also going one, two, in the Mount Gambier Harness Racing Club’s premier event.

“It was a terrific result for the horse and the team.” Craven said. “It’s very pleasing that’s for sure, especially with a few of the owners at the track.”

Although cleared of any infringements by stewards, the start of the 2017 Baxter Hite & Ubet Mount Gambier Pacing Gold Cup was filled with drama and basically cost one of the pre-race fancies, the Kevin Brough trained Just Wantano a shot at the silverware.

“The start didn’t go so well but Chris (driver) didn’t panic and just worked his way around the horses and got the job done,” Craven said. Craven admits he entered the race confident, given the form of Kimani heading into the blue riband event.

“Kimani was in pretty good order and we were pretty happy with his form,” Craven said. “He had a win in Hamilton in between Mount Gambier races and that brought his fitness right along to where he needed to be.” Chris Svanosio was the driver entrusted with

piloting the class gelding and it was an inspired effort.

“We were pretty confident we had the horse to win it and so it was nice to get the result because things don’t always work out. It was also great to have the Lamond brothers (owners)

win their home cup – it’s a big thrill for them.”

It was Craven’s second tilt at the Mount Gambier Pacing Gold Cup and he now has two, with Liv Lavish making it a quinella for the Terang trainer in 2017.

Craven has been a strong supporter of the Mount Gambier club and looks set to continue that strong association.

“It’s a credit to Phil Wood (president) and his hard working committee because it’s not an easy task to run the meetings they do as they are so isolated from the horse population,” Craven said. “We are happy to help out where we can and it obviously helps us when we win a couple of races. It is a good opportunity for us to get our horses to go around before they head to a harder class. We certainly don’t mind supporting the club and we have got some new owners from it as well.”

The Craven stable quinella was followed past the winning post by the Barry Finnis trained Big Bruce (Jayson Finnis) and Ocean’s Predator (Brent Howard) with Just Wantano coming home with a rush to finish fifth, showing her class, despite being a good 25 metres adrift in the back straight as the field headed for home.

Tenison Woods College student Ellyana Sims sang the national anthem at the annual cup meeting which

attracted a strong crowd. The other highlight of the evening was the pacing icon Come on Frank leading the cup field onto the Greenwald Paceway track.

Festival director,Carly Flecknoe said the festival’s first year was a success.

“The atmosphere and community spirit of attendees and everyone involved in bringing the festival to life was phenomenal,” she said. “We couldn’t be happier with how the weekend turned out. Our intention was to create a memorable experience that celebrates some of the incredible up and coming artists we have here in Australia and that’s exactly what we did. Seeing people enjoying all elements of the festival including the music, the picturesque setting and the great food and drink was something really special.” Encouraging more emerging talent, Grampians Music Festival staged the first ever Regional Victorian DJ Competition with winner, Zatchie, from Geelong, skilfully mixing sweet tunes to the delight of the crowd. Festival attendee Juliette Lalli said she would be returning next year. “I’ve been to many music festivals all over Australia but I’ve never experienced anything quite like the intimate vibe at the Grampians Music Festival,” she said. “ I’m looking forward to next year already. Everyone was so friendly, the music was fantastic and there simply couldn’t have been a better location than being surrounded by the stunning Grampians National Park mountains – just breathtaking.”

Teams will battle it out for the trophy, bragging rights and $1000 prize money that is donated to the winning team’s charity or community group of choice. “Our Vintage Stomp has been the curtain raiser for Coonawarra After Dark since the event commenced some time ago. Hundreds of people of all ages gather to enjoy good food, wine and company, while waiting in anticipation for the fun of the Stomp to begin. It’s a lot of fun and very competitive” said Frank DiGiorgio. “We love the whole atmosphere of the night and the fact that people can choose to stay on or easily move on to the other Friday night events, for more food, wine and live music”. Francesca Zema will again lead her team in the production of the delicious and much sought after familystyle pizzas on offer at Zema Estate, where music will be supplied by local musician Nicole Lear; setting up a great ambience for their vintage celebrations.

SWIMMING SEASON EXTENDED IN GLENELG

Swimmers in the Glenelg Shire will be able to kick their flippers in the outdoor pools for a little while longer following the announcement of an extension to the Grampians Region YMCA outdoor pool season. Glenelg Shire Council last week voted in favour of the season extension which will see the outdoor pools in Casterton and Portland remain open until Monday, April 17. Previously the outdoor operating season finished on March 31 each year. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said that it was a great outcome for the community, especially for families who will now be able to enjoy the outdoor swimming amenities during the school holiday period.

“There has always been significant community interest in the extension of the pool season, both at Casterton and Portland,” she said. “A number of requests to extend the season have been received over the last few years and it is wonderful news for swimmers that they will be able to continue to use the pool facilities for a few more weeks. Parents can also plan activities at the outdoor pools during school holidays, meaning they won’t have to travel out of town to find affordable entertainment for their children.”

Cr Rank said that the swimming season extension will also help Glenelg Shire residents to find ways to keep fit outdoors.

“Most importantly the extension of the pool season will encourage the community to continue to lead active and healthy lives,” she said.

“With Active April around the corner anyone who wants to get back into swimming, or start swimming, can pick up a 10 pass voucher to use the pool during April for free simply by registering online via the Active April website.

LOCAL STUDENTS RECEIVE BENDIGO BANK SCHOLARSHIPS Mount Gambier students Rachael Hines and Eilish McKay have been awarded this year’s Mount Gambier & District Community Bank® Branch Scholarship and Bendigo & Adelaide Bank Scholarship. The scholarships are awarded to first-time tertiary students whose financial circumstances might mean that a university degree is out of their reach. Rachael Hines, who was dux of Mount Gambier High School in 2015 with an ATAR of 97.25, has won the 2017

Mount Gambier & District Community Bank® Branch scholarship. She plans to use the local award to undertake first-time tertiary study in a Bachelor of Medical Imaging at UniSA, Adelaide.

Eilish McKay, who achieved an ATAR of 92.95 at Grant High School, also in 2015, is one of the recipients of the national 2017 Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Scholarship. Eilish will be commencing her studies in a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) this year at Flinders University. The overwhelming success of the Mount Gambier Rail Lands project has prompted the City of Mount Gambier to seek funding to virtually double the length of the trail by extending it past Pick Avenue and linking it up with the existing Jubilee Highway path leading to Blue Lake Sports Park. Plans are also in place to extend the western end of the trail, creating a common thread that connects the entire city both physically and socially.

The 3.1-kilometre Rail Trail was once an abandoned railway line, and the deserted tracks overgrown with weeds were offlimits to the general public.

When the land was gifted to the community by the South Australian Government, the City of Mount Gambier set to work re-purposing the site into a much-needed public green space.

City of Mount Gambier engineering manager Daryl Morgan said the Rail Trail was one of the most well-received projects that council had undertaken.

“We have had so much good feedback, because everybody has the opportunity to use it; every time you go past, you always see people out and about on the trail – it’s become such a vibrant recreational hub,” he said.

Mr Morgan said the Rail Trail had lived up to its vision as a multipurpose community space, with the stunning transformation injecting new life into a neglected wasteland and restoring a sense of civic pride. “It’s not just a

serious exercise track; it’s a genuine commuter route and that’s what we anticipated it to be – there are a lot of people who use it to walk or cycle home from work or school, and you also see a lot of parents teaching their kids to ride their bikes safely.”

Senior players from West Gambier Netball Club are among the sporting teams utilising the space.

“We used it for an ‘amazing race’ team-building activity, and we also set up a circuit on the reserve for our pre-season training,” said A grade coach Lisa McGregor. “It’s in a great central location and it’s such a fantastic open area for us to use.”

Members of the Reflexion Health and Fitness studio located opposite the rail reserve are also regular users.

“It’s a great warm-up area for some of our classes, but we also have around 25 members in a running group that use it twice a week; the trail offers a nice and flat, largely uninterrupted run through town without having to go onto footpaths or along sides of the road,” said owner Phil Ackland. “It’s great for time trials, or else we focus on the central section which is almost like an athletic track.”

Mr Ackland said he was amazed by the amount of people making use of the area. “It’s getting people out a bit more and connecting with others; it’s just great to see the number of people using the space on foot or on bikes or pushing prams in large or small groups,” he said. “It’s such a wonderful community space that ties in with the rest of the city and it’s such a fantastic facility to be able to use – it’s incredible to think how useable and well-used that space is compared to how long it sat as a disused railyard.”

AUSTRALIA’S LARGEST DAHLIA & ROSE SHOW THIS WEEKEND The Portland Dahlia & Rose Show is fast approaching its 50th anniversary with the 47th hosting of the event this weekend. Portland’s Civic Hall will be transformed into a sea of flowers, with thousands on display. It is the largest dahlia and rose show of its type in Australia, with a focus on showcasing those two breeds, as well as a range of cut flower and junior sections over the two day event. “We try and cater for the everyday home gardener right up to the professionals in the open class,” Portland Dahlia Society president Bruce Millard said. “We also have floral art and pot plant displays.” And as the March 11 & 12 show approaches, all eyes are on the weather forecast – the great unknown that has a profound effect on the quality of the display. “Last year we had some really windy weather

leading up to the show and that wasn’t ideal,” Bruce said. The Limestone Coast and South West Victoria provide strong growing conditions for both dahlias and roses. “In fact, the growing conditions are good right up along the Murray River,” he said. “One of our main exhibitors every year comes from Berri.” Producing flowers for showing is certainly a scientific business that takes a mountain of work ensuring the bush doesn’t flower too much. “You do have to try and keep a minimum amount of flowers on the bush,” Bruce said. “For small dahlias you don’t want any more than half a dozen on a bush and for the larger ones only one or two. And then it’s all about timing it for the shows you are aiming for.” The show is a huge undertaking every year for the Portland Dahlia Society, with a group of no more

than 10, mainly retirees, putting the massive weekend together. The society itself, though, has solid membership, extending across Australia. “We have members from South Australia, New South Wales, Tasmania and the ACT,” Bruce said. It means the focus for the dahlia society, as it is for so many community groups, is to attract younger members – a new generation to whom older club members can pass the baton. “All clubs are going through the same thing,” Bruce said. “It doesn’t matter if it is cricket or tennis or flowers.” And the Portland Dahlia Society is being proactive, contacting gardening groups across the region to try and drum up new members. Mount Gambier is certainly one of its primary targets. “It’s a very good growing place for dahlias,” Bruce said. “There was

good interest in a display we had there at Bunnings a few weeks ago and they have asked us to send a guest speaker to one of their garden club meetings.”

Portland’s Kelly Brewster is one of the Portland Dahlia Society’s young members – a product of the schools program and why the school sections of the show are so important. “I didn’t know it was her at the time but Kelly received my President’s Award at the show last year,” Bruce said. “She came through our school program and that’s another way we might attract new members.” The society boasts a strong online presence and encourages avid gardeners to check it out at www. portlanddahliasocietyinc.com.au

Narrawong and Nelson residents will soon be able to borrow and return books without travel following the announcement of a new outreach program.

Glenelg Shire Council last week voted at its ordinary council meeting to approve a 12-month trial of outreach visits to the townships of Nelson and Narrawong as part of the Library2Go van schedule for 2017-18. The outreach visits will commence from April this year.

This will mean that residents will no longer have to travel to neighbouring towns to access library services; borrowing and returning books will be as simple as visiting the Library2Go vehicle in the main street. Glenelg Libraries Manager Yvette Parker said that it was fantastic news for Nelson and Narrawong residents and was looking forward to seeing the number of library loans increase in the townships. “The confirmation of the trial program to Narrawong and Nelson comes after years of consultation and feedback from the community and it is wonderful to see it coming to fruition,” she said. “Glenelg Libraries relaunched a revitalised Library Outreach program in 2015 providing visits to the townships of Dartmoor, Digby and Merino. With the introduction of the Library2Go vehicle, usage in the three townships increased by 73% from 375 loans in 2013-14 to an incredible 1427 loans in 2015-16. Following this success, feedback was sought in 2016 to gauge interest in providing visits to Narrawong and Nelson.

We received an overwhelmingly positive response from both communities, which was great to see that there was a continued demand for library services. Over the next twelve months we will review the program in these townships. Based on community response we may assess the interest for the service to visit on a scheduled basis to coincide with school visits or the peak tourist period during summer.”

The two townships were identified as potential outreach stops due to their respective population numbers and their distance to static branches.

Families can go sandboarding at Little Sahara Sand Dunes, experience the Birds of Prey shows at Raptor Domain, swim with the dolphins, try a delicious serve of honey ice cream from Clifford’s Honey Farm and even discover a hidden, sandy beach via a secret path at Stokes Bay. Kangaroo Island has four caravan parks ranging from foreshore caravan parks in Kingscote and Penneshaw to natural bushland settings in the heart of the island in Parndana and at the western end of the island next to the Flinders Chase National Park and popular attractions Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks.

All sites are powered and facilities at the parks include everything from picnic and BBQ areas to camp kitchens, walking tracks and self-contained villas.

OUTSTANDING OUTCOMES FROM COACHING WEEKEND Blue Lake Y and Mount Gambier Swimming Clubs cohosted coaching clinics at the Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre earlier in the season, to offer local swimmers expert coaching. The clinics were sponsored by the Mt Gambier & District Community Branch of the Bendigo Bank, Swimming SA and the Mount Gambier City Council Junior Sports Assistance Fund. Baker’s Delight & She’s Apples also supported the event with generous supplies of bread products and fruit supplies. A total of 45 swimmers from Keith, Bordertown Dolphins, Penola, Blue Lake Y and Mt Gambier Swimming Clubs attended over the two days and the feedback from the coaches was positive. Norwood club coaches Shaun Curtis and Joel Ugarte conducted a variety of sessions on skill development, warm ups/stretching and nutrition for swimmers. A parent session was held as well as a forum for coaches to informally discuss challenges, methods and goals. Out of pool fitness sessions were also conducted by Garth Willoughby, from Personal G Training, and Megan Jenkins, from Blue Indigo Yoga, ran Pilates sessions. Improved outcomes

were evident several weeks later when swimmers competed at the annual Blue Lake Y Carnival where impressive personal best times were achieved, some by as much as 20 seconds. Blue Lake Y swimmers Nicole Moran, Luke Janssen, Daniel O’Callaghan, Archie Muller, Kiah Connelly and Hayley Pearson were all invited along with Mount Gambier Swim Club coach Julie Moran to attend a four day swimming camp at Immanuel College. Swimmers from both clubs have also attended SA Country Championships since, where all swimmers performed exceptionally well. Mount Gambier Swim Club swimmers Elijah Stratford and Vaughn Stratford along with BLY swimmer Luke Janssen have just been selected to represent the Barwon South West District at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre later this month.

KENT TRIUMPHS AGAIN Perfect weather conditions greeted the 63 shooters that competed in the second South East Field & Game event of the year. The O.G.Roberts 50 target 5 Stand Compak event saw a shoot off between Jeremy Kent and Chris Wright to determine the Gambier Shooting Supplies High Gun. Kent won to leave Wright the consolation of taking out AA from Ron Rhook and Ken Atkin, who also had to determine the minor placings with a shoot off. The A grade also had be decided by a shoot off with Lake Bonney`s Alan Cowan winning from Andrew Green and Jeremy Hellyer back in third.

Fabian Bigmore, from Kingston, won the B Grade from Ricki Kelly and Al Scheidl. Club secretary Michael Gates stamped his authority in C Grade with a resounding win over Michael Edwards and Tim Von Stanke. Wayne Evans won the veterans with a score only one target off the High Gun total to win from Neville Kent and Geoff Lowe. The Super Veterans was won by Kevin Dyson, with Greg Todd and Peter Klieve taking out the minor placings. Tash Bellinger took out the Ladies class from Vicki Fabris and the improving Max Crook won the Juniors. The competitive Sub Juniors saw Will Vickery get the better of Declan Wright this month with Shakielle Von Stanke finishing third.

LOCAL SPORT FOUR TITLES DECIDED It has been a huge weekend in Mount Gambier & District Cricket with four titles decided and the finalists decided in the remaining three grades. Penola went back to back in the Butchart Shield in a dominant performance. Max Arney was the destroyer with the ball, taking 6/8 from six overs in a spell that basically set up the victory for the Eagles. Only Rory Button showed any resistance for Centrals with a classy 39 but with four ducks and only two batsmen reaching double figures it was never going to produce a competitive score. An opening partnership of 34 ensured a successful chase was likely and an unbroken 54 run partnership between Jon Copping (39no.) and Ben Walker (24no.) guided the Eagles to back to back titles. Dylan Walker top scored with 39 for Penola as the Eagles chased down the victory target in the 11th over. As one sided as the Butchart Shield final was, the O’Donoghue Shield was a nailbiter. It went down the final over in a seesawing battle, after Penola posted 138 on the back of an impressive captain’s knock from Sam Klemm (48m0.) and a hand 24 in the middle order from Josh Currie who was part of a 59 run fifth wicket stand.

Mil Lel was certainly pacing itself well early and with 10 overs left in the chase sat at 5/112. Enter David Porter, who picked up two wickets in two balls – both to outstanding catches – one in the deep on the run from Josh Currie and the other chasing a high ball as it went

over his head off the edge by James Foggo. Having Mil Lel at 7/112, suddenly the Eagles had a spring in their step with plenty of chatter on the field and when Joel Virtanen was run out taking a second run at 8/124 with four overs left, it was clear this Under 16 title was going down to the wire. Once the ninth wicket fell, the tension was palpable as opener Tom Neiuwerkerk returned to the crease and in the end it was the talented allrounder that hit the winning runs, scooping the ball off his legs and to the boundary with three balls to spare. The Hall Trophy was also decided at the weekend (no details available), as was the Sims Shield, where North Gambier was in control for much of the contest to take the title. North batted first and made an impressive 4/149 with Brodie Allen (28ret.) and Bodey and Harry Hosking (25ret.) doing the damage in the middle order. Jonty Collins then continued their good work with some strong bowling, taking 3/4 from his three overs as Millicent struggled to mount a challenge and build any partnerships, eventually dismissed for 94. North Gambier enters the Barber Shield finals series, where they will face East Gambier at Frew Park, on the back of a comprehensive outright victory over Kongorong, while Penola and West Gambier will again face off at Malseed Park, after Penola secured the first innings victory at the weekend when the two played at McCorquindale Park. Mil Lel ended a tough season on a high, beating finalist East Gambier, who only just snuck into fourth despite their final round loss. LOCAL SPORT WARRIORS ADVANCE TO SEASON DECIDER Wanderers Yellow are living the dream after extending their season by at least one more week with a shock victory over Concordes White.

Wanderers Yellow scraped into the finals but showed no signs of stage fright in their clash with Concordes White, surviving a tense opening where both teams showed nerves of steel in the field, before Wanderers were able to string together enough solid safehits to consistently score. Rej Johnson led the way for Wanderers Yellow with four safehits, while also keeping things under control from the pitching mound. Wanderers Yellow will now face Demons in the preliminary after the minor premiers fell to Warriors in the 2nd semi final. Demons got the better start, scoring two runs early but Warriors pitcher Leyna Bruggeman not only tightened things up in the field, she also hit a game changing triple that saw Warriors score three runs in the fourth and start building their advantage. Her fellow pitcher, Grace Millard, was one of the standouts for her side, both on the mound and with three safehits, a feat emulated by her team mate Steph John. It could be argued Demons batted better than Warriors but too often left runners on base and could not take advantage of the efforts of the likes of Megan Ridding, Tayla Wilson-Smith and Felicity Treacey. Demons coach Cody Manning secured a stunning triple in the last dig but her side was una le to bridge the gap and must back up against a confident Wanderers lineup to earn a rematch.

I’m at a point of my life where the growing of my own fringe is no longer an option. Nature has decided that if I want a fringe, it will need to be at about the middle of the top of my head. Unless I can somehow weave my eye brow and ear hair into some sort of a fringe that is.

I am still excited that I’ll be able to watch other people getting their fringes though.

One of the best things about the Fringe Festival is that we don’t call fringes bangs like they do in America. I’ve got a feeling that a Bangs Festival may cause some confusion. Some people might really like a Bangs Festival, mind you.

look. There were only problems if Mum had consumed a few too many frothies and the bowl was on an angle. There was one time when Dad chose a bowl that had been thrown at him earlier by Mum. Because it had a chip in it I ended up with a slightly wonky fringe line.

As I got older I became a bit more concerned about being stylish so I needed to update my hairstyle. The fringe I moved onto was the classic Flock of Seagulls style. For you whipper snappers who are too busy social media-ing to Googleise this one, picture the hairstyle that Donald Trump probably had in his twenties. Imagine if his hair wasn’t styled into some bouffant thing on top of his head but was swept down over his face instead.

This was one of my favourite fringe based hairstyles but the fact I kept walking into poles was a problem. My hairdresser recommended I get a new hairstyle as the concussions were likely to cause long term damage to my brain.

I have swept my fringe to the left or the right at different stages of my life. I generally find this approach to my fringe causes more problems. With my hair swept to one side or the other it adds extra weight to that side of my head. This leads me to compensate by trying to hold my head up straight. This of course causes extra strain on the neck muscles on one side of my head and frequent visits to the chiropractor. It’s not a hairstyle that justifies that sort of sacrifice.

I’ve had trouble with hair styles apart from fringes over the years. In the early

Residents in the Glenelg Shire will soon be able to plan dinner out with family and friends without the stress of forward planning thanks to an updated accessibility guide.

The Glenelg Shire Accessible Eating Guide will assist people with disabilities, their families and carers to make decisions on eateries based on ease of disability access. The guide, which was first developed in 2010, is being updated to extend the coverage of eateries across the entire Glenelg Shire. Kyeema Support Services Support Worker Kate Simpson, who often has to plan group outings weeks in advance due to accessibility restrictions, said that the news of an accessible eating guide was welcomed by the Kyeema community. “At the moment, only local knowledge and making phone calls to places that we have not previously visited before is how we ascertain accessibility for our clients when dining out,” she said. “An accessible eating guide that covers the Glenelg region would not only provide easy planning for my clients with mobility issues, it would also allow us to organise day trips and extended visits to other areas in the shire.” Kate Simpson strongly encouraged businesses to get involved, not only to gain a better understanding of access and inclusion, but to also help promote and support the local community.

“Businesses who register themselves for the accessible eating guide would not only be promoting their business to local residents, but supporting the local community by bringing people to the area to eat, shop and enjoy the many and varied attractions on offer.” Registration for the Glenelg Shire Accessible Eating Guide is free and closes on Friday, March 17. I can’t tell you how excited I am to have the Fringe in Mount Gambier for the first time.

One of the things I love most about the Fringe Festival coming to Mount Gambier is that it’s just so amazing that the people in Adelaide remembered that we are here. I’m guessing that they’re not sending us the good stuff though. It’s obviously just the Fringe stuff they didn’t want.

Anyway, like I said, I’m pretty excited about the Fringe being in town. , like you, have been hearing about this wonderful haircutting festival that has been happening in Adelaide for a number of years now. I’ve always been a bit jealous that they get a festival devoted to the shaped cutting of hair hanging over the forehead and we don’t get any part of it.

There have been years when I’ve been tempted to travel to Adelaide to watch someone get their hair trimmed. It has always seemed like a long way to go for this sort of event so most years I’ve just gone down to the local hairdressers and stared in the windows for a little while.

I’m looking forward to going and getting a fringe of my own. I’ve had a variety of different fringe style hair dos in my life. As a youngster my parents saved money by putting a bowl on my head to help with cutting my hair. Most of the time that provided quite a neat looking
