WEIGHT WATCHERS ALIVE & WELL IN MOUNT GAMBIER There is a significant spotlight on just how healthy are our lifestyles. From diet to exercise and general well being along with mental and emotional health, magazine copy has never been more filled with the topics, and you can add to that reality TV shows and a vast array of social media platforms spruiking what’s best. For more than five decades, there has been a weight loss program getting the job done, and while it has been somewhat drowned out by the plethora of options in this space, Weight Watchers in this region is still going strong with some wonderful success stories. As a program, Weight Watchers has also evolved and you can find out just how by attending one of the three meetings offered by Weight Watchers Mount Gambier. There is Wednesday at 5.30pm; Thursday at 12.15pm and Saturday morning at 9.30am – all held in the meeting room at the Mount Gambier Community (entry is via the rear car park and it is the last door on your right). The Mount Gambier group is campaigning for new members as it looks to spread the word that Weight Watchers is still a viable option if you are looking to reset your lifestyle, with healthy eating, exercise and a positive mindset. There are three weight loss coaches in the Mount Gambier group – Tania Kent, Loraine Baron and Megan Hammond. Each takes a meeting but attend all three so there is always plenty of helpful advice on hand.

“That way if it is busy there is still that opportunity for one on one time,” Tania said. “If someone wants to speak to you

about their own personal journey then we’re happy to do that.” While Weight Watchers does offer online services, in terms of coaching and support, the overall consensus is the accountability and support that group meetings provide, makes it more effective. “You are accountable for your weight each week,” Tania said. “The support of other

people in meetings seems to be really important and we have a fantastic group of people that go. People do find they lose their motivation if they don’t go to a meeting.” There is also a private facebook group and a weekly newsletter, adding to the support the Mount Gambier Weight Watchers group provides.

This month’s Weight Watchers magazine’s cover story is about Anna Van Dyken, a Western Australian based convert who has lost 70kgs on the program, and the good news for Mount Gambier members is she is closely associated with the local group through her friendship with Tania. “She (Anna Van Dyken) is the reason I went back to Weight Watchers,” Tania said. “We’ve become really good friends and she contributes to our facebook group and newsletter every week. It was her dream to make it onto the cover of Weight Watchers magazine and she is living it at the moment.” Weight Watchers meetings Australia wide focus on the same topic each week as the meetings focus on the three pillars of the program – food, fit and feel. “It’s not just about food anymore,” Tania said. “It’s got a real focus on exercise and mental health and making sure you do things for yourself.” Meetings also sometimes include experiences, including visits from personal trainers, or the occasional visit from Wendy Richardson, from Redgum Country, with some fashion advice.

A former gym instructor, Tania’s own personal Weight Watchers journey is an interesting one. “Weight Watchers used to have meetings in a room at the current Swimskool building in Keegan Street when Tonic Gym was a part of that complex. “One day I decided to grab a timetable, I went to a Body Jam class and I liked it and eventually became an instructor,” she said. “I was never interested in health and fitness

before that and it really got me into it.” All Weight Watchers coaches are accredited by the weight loss program and the training is ongoing, mainly through webinars.

Local group member Raelene Grills has been part of Weight Watchers since 2007. “It keeps me on track,” she said.

“Going to meetings helps keep my focus. It’s social, everyone is always encouraging each other, they teach you how to eat. I never miss a meeting and the people running it are great.”

Peta Haines, who has been part of the group for 12 months and travels from Millicent to get her weekly Weight Watchers fix, is also full of praise. “I did Weight Watchers years ago and I found it worked,” Peta said. “I needed to lose weight again and so I came back 12 months ago and once again it worked.

The accountability is important and the social side of it as well. We all have different journeys but we’re all on the same journey at the same time.”

CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF MIL LEL PRIMARY SCHOOL “Teachers deal with the most potent, the most elusive, the most interesting thing in the world – the human

mind.” That was the assessment of the Education Gazette in 1923 and that doesn’t take into consideration

all the challenges, despite educating children that teachers face. Mil Lel Primary School is celebrating its 150th anniversary on March 25 and 26 and flicking back through the archives shows a school closure for six weeks due to an influenza outbreak, as well as facing whooping cough outbreaks, spasmodic attendance from students who lived the furthest from the school and then there was the fact, many teachers in the early years had no formal training. Interestingly in the early years, there was actually more than one school in the Mil Lel area – the corner of Worrolong Road and Kennedy Avenue, in the Mil Lel church, Wire Paddock School, situated on the corner of White and Peeweena Roads, a school run by the Misses Plate not far from the current school site, the Pleasant Park School and a Catholic school at Worrolong. And if teachers

today think they are under-appreciated and poorly paid, being a teacher in the late 19th century and into the 20th was even less valued. Teachers relied on school fees to make any kind of income, bearing in mind many parents could not afford to pay and students often stopped attending school, therefore the fees stopped as well. And when an 1875 MP cited “teaching was the last refuge for those who had failed in all other callings”, it was no wonder the most suitable candidates weren’t necessarily knocking down the door to educate the district’s kids. Despite the hardships, Mil Lel has a proud history of not just educating generations but also being a vibrant member of the wider Mil Lel community. In the early years, the variety of school campuses attracted from 20-40 children and as the 150th anniversary approaches, the

school boasts 70 students. Twice in its history the school has topped 100 enrolments – 1974 and 1977 – but mostly it has been about multi level classes and all the advantages of a small school community. The centenary in April 1967 saw a reunion day, including a fancy dress competition, a pet show, log chopping, cycling, greasy pig and rooster chases and a dance that night. In 2017, the 150th celebrations will be even more elaborate. Friday, March 24, will see an afternoon tea at the school from 1.30pm, coinciding with the school’s championships sprints and then Saturday is when all the reminiscing will really get underway. There is an open day from 10am-2pm, an unveiling of a mural and commemorative stone, sausage sizzle and then the Dinner at the Barn featuring Sydney based band Pirra with lead singer and former Mil Lel student Jess Beck. And the singer’s memories of her time at the school are vivid, sharing just how it impacted on her career choices. Jess immersed herself in acting, singing and all things musical – if someone was needed on stage, Jess was always the first to volunteer.

“Mil Lel was a great primary school to go to,” Jess said. “It had a music room and dress ups and I was always in there doing something creative.” She credits Lyn Taylor with stirring her love of performing, especially when the Mil Lel teacher got the students involved in the dance production Move It, which is still a major joint performing arts event in this region. And that’s just one of many stories from old scholars regaling how much they value their Mil Lel education.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - DEAR ROBBIE 28... By ROBBIE TANSEL It’s time to address some of my recent correspondence.

“Dear Robbie, You look like you’ve got an amazing life and that you’ve got things going on.

But what do you do when you have a bad day? Matty from Millicent” Let me say firstly Matty that I have my fair share of problems. I have good days and I have days where things don’t go my way.

The question though is what do I do on those days where things aren’t going well? I’ll let you in on my secret. I put things in perspective; I remind myself that things could be worse. I’ll be more

specific. I could be a sheep.

I think being a sheep might be just about the worst. For starters you’re all woolly. It’s been very warm lately and if you’re constantly stuck wearing a woolly jumper, life is going to be pretty uncomfortable. Winter would be just as much of a problem with that woolly jumper now absorbing water and keeping you wet and cold for longer.

Another thing that would be frustrating as a sheep would be your diet. Sheep eat grass. All day every day.

No pizza. No hot chips. No birthday cake.

No one even celebrates your birthday as a sheep. No one even remembers your birthday; not even your mum. I’m not a fan of having everyone stand around singing happy birthday to me. I won’t lie to you though. I am a fan of cake. I also don’t mind receiving presents at times.

It doesn’t seem to me that there’s a lot of purpose in your life as a sheep either. When you wake up in the morning, what are you looking to achieve with your day? What’s your ambition? Not get eaten by a fox?

Find the juiciest grass in the paddock?

Procreate? Become a bit more woolly?

There’s really not a lot that’s going to motivate you to achieve something.

The lack of opposable thumbs would definitely be one of the biggest disappointments if you were a sheep.

Imagine if you looked around at the farmer with his fancy hand digits, picking things up, squeezing things, turning his key in the handle of his ute. That’s definitely going to lead to some jealousy and rage. It’s probably quite surprising that sheep aren’t angry, vicious animals. But consider if they were. What could they do? Chew someone to death with their big flat teeth. Bump up against you with their big woolly bodies? Step on your feet? I think they’re herbivores due to having no useful weapons to get themselves a good steak.

The other problem with the lack of opposable thumbs would be, how would you change the channel on the television? You couldn’t pick up the remote. All you’d be able to do was stamp on it with your big cloven hooves.

I guess remote control designers would probably adjust the designs to better meet the needs of sheep if they knew that sheep would be purchasing and watching televisions. They obviously don’t think that’s their target audience

at the moment.

Having said that, how many shows are there on television that sheep would want to watch at the moment? I can’t imagine they’d want to watch any of the cooking shows. There are often dishes made with lamb and you’d have to think that would be a bit of a sensitive issue. I doubt they have any interest in celebrities. Comedy wouldn’t interest them as it’s very clear they have no sense of humour.

Even as a sheep though, I bet you could put things in perspective and realise things could be worse. You could be a sheep living in New Zealand. Have you heard what they do to sheep there?

MOSAIC EXHIBITION HEADS TO THE SEASIDE

If you are heading to Port MacDonnell any time in the next couple of months make sure to stop in at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex which is hosting a stunning exhibition by mosaic artist Samantha Aslin.

Sammi’s Glass Mosaics opened last week and is running until the end of April. All works are for sale. “My interest in creating mosaics began when I retired in 2002,” Samantha said. “At first I played around with a few coloured tiles, making simple pictures before becoming more adventurous, mosaicing tabletops, birdbaths, mirrors and garden pots. I became interested in doing mosaics in colours glass after attending a weekend workshop. It was the beginning of my passion for creating glass mosaics to place in window areas where the light can show off their beauty.

MORNING TEA HELPS FUND UNIVERSITY EDUCATION Sometimes it only takes a small gesture to make a huge difference and that has certainly been the case for the Independent Learning Centre in Mount Gambier. The centre held a morning tea last week to raise money for a Malawi based student who needed help with his university fees. The fundraising effort was spearheaded by staff member Deb Thompson and when the money raised is sent to Raj, the student in question, his life will be changed and he will be able to pay his university fees and start his tertiary course. Deb’s daughter Hannah Thompson, volunteered as a nurse in Malawi at the Billy Riordan Memorial Clinic, in Cape Maclear, and that is how the Independent Learning Centre and Raj became inextricably bound. “This was the most amazing thing I have ever been privileged to be a part of, partly because of the incredible, resilient, kind and all round excellent humans I worked with,” Hannah said.

Raj was one of those workers – he was working at the clinic as a personal care assistant. “He (Raj) had a dream

to pursue nursing as a career,” Hannah said. “After much encouragement he sat the exams, excelled, and now has a place in university studying nursing.”

But for the dream to become a reality, Raj was going to need some help with his university fees. “Five hundred dollars is not a lot of money in Australia, but to him it is a year’s tuition, a chance to realise his dream and make real changes in his community and for his life,” Hannah said. “It was an honour to work with someone like Taj and I know he will make the most amazing nurse.”

Last week’s fundraiser was a huge success with the money now set to be wired to Raj.

Premier’s Active April encourages all Victorians to do 30 minutes of physical activity a day during April. Now in its ninth year, the program offers an array of free activities and events to help Victorians join in the fun of increased physical activity.

This year Mayor Cr Anita Rank will be one of the program’s ambassadors, helping to spread the word about local Active April events and the benefits of daily exercise. Cr Rank said that there was a variety of activities on offer during the month of April to appeal to all age groups and fitness levels.

“We’ve got a fantastic line up of events happening in the Glenelg Shire this April to encourage you to be active, including the Mayors Boot camp, Pilates, Zumba, Tai Chi and more,” she said. “All activities are being coordinated by the YMCA and Portland District Health, and a range of other community groups and business are also participating in the program including PT@HOME, Brenda’s Functional Fitness, Portland Runners Club, Parkrun and SNAP Fitness.”

Mayor Cr Anita Rank said that the whole of Victoria will be participating in Active April, and was looking forward to seeing high numbers of participants in the Glenelg region especially.

“Last year more than 104,000 Victorians participated, and I hope to see many locals supporting this program in our region,” she said. “In addition to the range of free events, every person who registers for Premier’s Active April will receive ten free passes to the YMCA, as well as the chance to win some great prizes including tickets to the 2018 Australian Open Tennis Finals, a $1,500 bike voucher or a GoPro camera. There are so many reasons to participate in Active April – it’s free, it’s fun and it’s all part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to get more people active and healthy.”

PDH BACKS SUGAR TAX PETITION Portland District Health and the SeaChange initiative are backing a south-west Victorian petition for a sugar tax to reduce the consumption of sweet drinks to fight obesity in Australia. The petition was initiated

by GenR8 Change, a community driven movement that seeks to make the healthy choice the easy choice in the Southern Grampians Shire, and local health officials say the issue is just as relevant around Portland and the rest of Australia. The petition is now available at www.ssbtax. com/. The completed petition will be presented to the Federal House of Representatives at the end of March. PDH Director of Primary & Aged Care Fiona Heenan encouraged the local community to get behind the campaign. “As a leading player in the SeaChange initiative, PDH has reviewed its own polices and is part of a regional health service commitment to phase out the sales of sugary drinks,” Ms Heenan said.

“Drinking sugary drinks contributes to obesity and obesity causes chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. We know that this preventative approach can have a significant long-term impact, particularly on children and hope local people make the effort to sign this important petition.” Ms Heenan said the proposed tax would be similar to taxes on cigarettes “It’s not about being a nanny state saying that you can’t have sugary drinks, it’s about applying a tax that recognises the health risks of sugary drinks and the impact they have on people and our health services,” she said. “We hope parents and the general community get on board and support this campaign.” The petition is being supported by Western District Health Service (WDHS) and other community leaders around Hamilton. It backs the Grattan Institute’s push for a sugary drinks excise tax, levied at about 40 cents per 100 grams of sugar. Sugar is a major driver of obesity and one of the most common sources is sugarsweetened drinks. The proposed tax would mean a 15 cent price increase for a 370ml can of soft drink and would raise about $500 million a year. It could lead to a 15 per cent fall in consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages as consumers switch to water and other drinks not subject to the tax. Money raised through the tax could be invested back into community health initiatives to promote healthier eating and lifestyle choices.

Method Preheat oven to 180C. Grease and line a 26 x 16cm (base measurement) slice pan.

Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over high heat. Cook the onion, stirring, for 3 minutes or until soft. Stir in the sweet potato for 3-4 minutes or until soft. Stir in the garlic for 1 minutes or until aromatic. Whisk the eggs, egg whites and flour in a large bowl until smooth. Whisk in ricotta until just combined. Stir in the sweet potato mixture, zucchini, chives and parsley. Season. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden and cooked through. Set aside to cool slightly. Meanwhile, place the tomatoes on a baking tray. Spray with olive oil. Roast for 10 minutes or until just soft. Serve the slice with tomatoes, scattered with extra parsley.

clearance rate, they achieved their highest sale average, of $9282, selling to five States.

Jodie and Shane Foster, of Boonaroo Angus, Casterton, purchased the top price bull, Lot 8, Te Mania Lackey L27 for $30,000. This impressive son of Te Mania Garth G67 was in the top 1% of the Angus breed for all four profitability indexes – Angus Breeding Index of $153, Domestic Index of $133, Heavy Grain Index of $176 and Heavy Grass Index of $140. Weighing 788kgs, he had excellent EBVs across the board, with birthweight of 4.1 bending the growth curve to a 600D weight of 127, combining with excellent calving ease, docility, carcase and structure. Jodie said they selected L27 for his calving ease, growth, $Indexes, perfect structure and temperament.

Anna Adams managed the bidding on-site at Te Mania where eight bidders were successful from five States – Victoria, NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania. There were another 46 registered bidders on online service and another 112 who watched the sale. Ms Adams said AuctionsPlus bidders were active on 152 of the 156 lots.

“This was a higher than average participation on the cattle sale for the platform, and that it reflected Te Mania’s strong reputation and established bloodlines in the industry, and outstanding pre-sale marketing that included videos that reassured buyers that the bulls moved well,” Anna said.

Te Mania co-principal, Hamish McFarlane reiterated that the strong uptake of buyers using AuctionsPlus showed a confidence in the information made available online. This information included an interactive online catalogue and video footage of each bull.

The greatest genetic boost for producers came from the Te Mania

Angus sire lines, which are extensively progeny tested in commercial conditions, throughout commercial herds, across New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.

Te Mania Garth had 38 sons in the sale. All four $Indexes rank in the top 1% for profitability on Angus Breedplan.

Combine this with moderate birth weight, high growth rate and exceptional temperament, he is already making a big impact in the industry. The 38 sons of Garth sold for an average of $11,105.

Te Mania Gaskin G555, by Tuwharetoa Regent, had 14 sons, which sold for an average of $11,285. Te Mania Jerome VTMJ131, by Te Mania Berkley B1, is a carcase specialist achieving excellent results throughout Team Te Mania herds. His 10 sons sold for an average of $12,600. Te Mania Jenkins J89 had 15 sons in the sale, which impressed with plenty of frame and very high $Index values, averaging $10,066. The overwhelming feeling was that there was excellent value for everyone, with 94 bulls selling for $8000 or less - well short of the old rule of thumb that a bull should cost about the same as you get for 10 steers.

YOUTH LEADER WINS STATE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD The work of a Glenelg Shire Council employee, who has made significant and lasting change in the youth sector, was recognised at an industry award ceremony. Hayley Dunning, Youth Development Officer, was awarded the LGPro Young Achiever Award at the recent LGPro Annual Conference Dinner last month. Hayley was recognised for excellence in her youth engagement work, including the development of council’s Youth Charter with the Youth Advisory Group, as well as her commitment to mentoring, inclusion and innovation.

PASSIONATE ABOUT HEALTH IN HER OWN BACKYARD Medical services in regional Australia are never far from the spotlight but if Mount Gambier based junior doctor Liana Van De Veerdonk has anything to do with it, this region will be well served. Not only has the Mount Gambier local returned to her hometown to work at the local hospital, but she is also spearheading a program encouraging medical students to ply their trade in this region and that’s why the 26 year old has been nominated for a Channel Nine Young Achiever Award in the Rural Doctors Workforce Agency Rural Health category. The Tenison Woods College alumni has already undertaken seven years of university study, with the majority of her placements being in this region and elected to spend her first year as a junior doctor at the Mount Gambier Hospital. “I think particularly in the early days of my post graduate medical degree I realised how important rural health was to me and how important it was to have young people in rural areas that are bringing back their learning to the community,” Liana said. And she has not only returned herself but has been a driving force behind the Parallel Rural Community Curriculum (PRCC) subquota program, as part of the selection panel. The program provides up to 24 places where students enjoy a range of rural experiences, including a one month placement in the rural region for which they are selected. “The aim of this is to formally involve these students in the rural community and really mesh them into a rural medical life in hopes of them continuing their careers as young doctors in the region as I have done,”

Liana said. Her involvement even saw her head to Canada last year to attend the International Conference on Community Engaged Medical Education (ICEMEN) where she was able to share her views on the relationship between a community and its health services and associated education. “It was such an experience to present my perspective of the role and benefits of this program in the community I live in and I was thrilled that educators internationally were so interested in the successes of the program in retaining 50 percent of student participants to date in the communities they studied in as doctors,” she said. “We need to put the community in the driving seat.” And that’s

what the PRCC sub-quota does with two community members part of the selection panel. Liana is an interesting case study herself with medicine not being a lifelong dream but a plan only put into action during her gap year. “I wasn’t one of those people that had wanted to be a doctor all their life - I didn’t even apply for medicine when I was at school,” Liana said. “No one in my family had gone to university, they were the type of people that valued hard work and it was only after I finished school and had done my gap year that I decided on a medical career pathway.” It’s a decision that has set her on a pathway where rural health is set to be the winner and she is certainly loving her medical

journey. “This has allowed me to pursue my academics but also develop skills in communication and an opportunity to help people,” Liana said. “Especially when people are really vulnerable and going through a really tough time to try and make that situation a bit more bearable for them is the part I thought would be most rewarding and I haven’t been proved wrong.” The nomination, from a colleague, came as a huge surprise to Liana. “For me the important part was someone I know and work with valued what I had done and thought my contribution was enough to warrant a nomination,” she said. “I hope what the community takes from it (the nomination), is that the university in this region is trying to have a pathway where the community has a say – it’s what I’m passionate about and what I believe in.”

And if you take a snapshot of the current interns at the Mount Gambier Hospital, the program is going from strength to strength. “They (interns) all have a rural focus,” Liana said. Examples including an intern looking to be a regionally based surgeon, some interns looking to settle in general practice in a rural area and even an intern looking at a GP anaesthetist role, also in regional Australia. “I can only hope that the outcomes of my small but passionate contribution add to the fuller scope of the benefits to the community.”

Judging is underway this week with the gala presentation, showcasing finalists and winners is on April 28. Mount Gambier’s Kye Todd is also a nominee in the sports category – his story is on page 42.

RARE ARTEFACTS TO BE DISPLAYED AT CASTERTON

In a rare viewing opportunity, Casterton will host a significant collection of photographs, ephemera, memorabilia, costumes and personal items from some of the earliest European settlers in the Glenelg Shire as part of a new exhibition. Henty – A Family Collection explores the stories of Francis and Mary Ann Henty and their family and is on display at the Casterton Town Hall foyer until October this year. Glenelg Shire Council Arts and Culture Manager Susie Lyons said that the exhibition will give residents and tourists into Casterton a unique insight into the lives of those who shaped south west Victoria over 150 years ago.

“Henty – A Family Collection follows the Henty’s arrival in Portland, to their settlement of properties in the north of the Shire through to the eventual division of the property into the early 20th century,” she said. “Highlights of the exhibition include copies of promissory notes from the 1820s, Francis Henty’s book of home remedies, orange blossom from Mary Ann Henty’s 1842 wedding outfit and coin purses made from tortoise shell and seal fur.”

Ms Lyons also noted that this was a particularly exciting exhibition for the Glenelg Shire given that many artefacts had never been seen before by the general public.

“Some items in this exhibition are on public display for the first time, others for the first time in over a generation,” she said. “All items have been sourced from a local family collection and I encourage all residents in the Glenelg Shire to take the opportunity to see this significant collection.” The Henty – A Family Collection exhibition is free and is on display until October 13.

COOLANA SETS RECORD HIGHS IN AUTUMN BULL SALE

Logistical management decisions into new territory are often exercises of venturing into the unknown and can really only be judged in hindsight. For Mark, Anna and Max Gubbins the decision to combine their annual South Australian and Victorian Autumn Angus bull sales into one only sale at Chatsworth was one such decision, made well before their other huge decision to disperse their cattle studs.On the evidence of the bull sale held earlier this month, it was an excellent move, very strongly supported by both local Victorian and interstate buyers.

In a total clearance,130 Angus bulls sold to $17,000 and averaged $7588, both being new record highs for Coolana.

While exiting at the top is seen as a wise decision, as is the case with their female dispersals, the big advantage the buyers of Coolana bulls have is that there are three more bull sales still to go before all the 2015 and 2016 drop bulls pass through their sale ring between September 2017 and March and September 2018.

The 18 month old record breaking $17,000 top priced bull, Coolana NZ465-L238 was purchased by the Kelly family, Mooramook Pastoral, Caramut, Victoria, long time supporters of Coolana genetics. Sired by the New Zealand background bull, Te Mania 11 465, this magnificently structured and balanced youngster was supported by equally impressive and balanced Breedplan figures, up to +112 for 600 day weight, +17 for Milk, +2.8 for Scrotal, +6.3 for EMA and +2.7 for IMF%. This topped the previous Coolana record of $16,000 set in their 2015 spring sale and equalled at last year’s spring sale.

Very prominent South Australian purchaser over several years, Legh Winser, Benara, Mount Gambier, sent a strong buying order through Independent

Beef Consultant Dick Whale. He purchased five bulls for Benara, averaging $10,800, including the $15,000 second top priced Coolana New Day H36-L122, plus the equal third top of $14,000 for Coolana Black Pearl L157. Sired by Coolana New Day H36 and Sydgen Black Pearl 2006 respectively, these two bulls had a very similar level and balance of Breedplan figures to the sale topping bull.

Dick Whale had a busy day, purchasing 18 bulls for five different buying accounts. These included Burnfoot Pastoral, SA (seven bulls to $7000 and averaging $6214) and Allhill Pty Ltd, Corowa, NSW (four bulls to $10,000 and averaging $9125).

The dominant buying account was once again Princess Royal Station, represented by Simon, Andrea and Jack Rowe, buying through Elders Burra.

They purchased 28 bulls in total at a $6911 average, paying from $10,000 to the sale’s other equal third top price of $14,000 seven times. Their first purchase was lot 1 at $10,000 while they also purchased the very last lot at $5500, giving strong competition throughout.

Princess Royal produces heavyweight steers for the EU market and the Rowe family swear by the quality and predictable performance of the Coolana bulls that really match their Breedplan figures.

Eighteen other South Australian producers made it onto the buyers list and through the very strong contribution from Princess Royal Station they accounted for 58% of the 130 bulls, while 27 buyers from Victoria purchased 34% of the offering.

McCarthy Livestock, buying through Elders Lucindale, purchased six bulls to $8500 and at an average of $7000. Swan Brothers, Meningie, were also strong with five to $9000 and at an $8400 average, while Deb McDonald, Moonee Hills Pty

Ltd (four bulls averaging $9750 including two for $10,000 and one at $11,000), and Delta Produce (four bulls to $6500 and average $5750) all purchased through joint sale agents, Spence Dix & Co, Keith & Meningie. H & VJ McLean through TDC Penola, SA purchased one bull but made it a very good one, paying $10,000.

Victorian buyers with four bulls each were Abbey Hills Partnership, Hawkesdale (to $9500 and averaging $8000), Hopkins River Pastoral, Dunkeld (to $9000 and averaging $8250) and CP & LM Iredell, Pigeon Ponds, Victoria, through PPH & S Naracoorte (four to $7000 and averaging $6500). Five other Victorian buyers also paid to $10,000 or better for bulls, to make a significant contribution to Coolana’s record average. These were Boortkoi Pastoral Co, Hexham (one at $12,500), the Roach family, Kilkenny Pastoral Co, Hawkesdale (one at $12,000), BF & CS Evans, Tatong (one at $10,500), Denholm Green Pastoral Co, Hexham (two at $10,000 each) and Glendale Pastoral Co, Pakenham (one at $10,000).

21 bulls sold for $10,000 or better throughout the sale.

Ross Milne, Elders, and Jono Spence, Spence Dix & Co, moved the sale along very rapidly, yet still professionally and respectfully for all bidders, clearing the catalogue in just under two hours. Jono Spence said in kicking the sale off, “There are none better than Coolana in backing their product and program.” The volume of repeat buyers, many of whom travelled significant distance would give strong support to this statement.

In an emotional aftermath to the sale, senior principal Mark Gubbins paid special tribute to his strongest mentor and family friend Malcolm Macdonald who is currently very ill and of course not able to be present. Mark called up and made a presentation to Malcolm’s three daughters who were present at this sale bidding against each other and all other bidders; Andrea (Princess Royal, 28 bulls), Deb (Moonee Hills, four bulls) and Helen (Boundy and Macdonald, one bull).

LOCAL SPORT LOCAL ATHLETES HEADED TO NATIONAL STAGE When it comes to punching above their weight, the Mount Gambier Little Athletics Centre would have to be one of the best. Its current crop of teenage athletes have made some sort of history with six athletes headed to the 2017 Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Sydney, from March 26 to April 2 – three of them with national qualifying times.

“It is unique for this centre to have so many athletes heading to the nationals and three with automatic qualifying,” long standing coach Sally Taylor said. “I think you would have to go back to the days of Aimee Laube, Adrian Taylor and Stewart and Aimee McLaughlin when we had so many athletes competing at that standard.”

Sixteen year old sprinter Isabel Redemski, her 13 year old sister and fellow sprinter Tori, 15 year old sprinter Shylah Fosdike, 15 year old triple jumper Kaylee Whitehead, 14 year old triple

jumper Jacob Armitage and middle distance runner and steeplechaser Hannah Elliot are all Sydney bound and are all coached at the centre’s Mount Gambier High School based facility by Sally Taylor.

Isabel will be competing in the 100m and 200m, running a national qualifying time for both at the recent State Track & Field Titles, where she finished second in both events, both in personal best times as well.

Jacob has also posted national qualifying distances, well before he won gold in the triple jump at the February State Track & Field Titles, as well as a fourth in the 100m.

Hannah is the other athlete that has produced a national qualifying time, and she did it in her first attempt at the 2km steeplechase – her run at the nationals will be only her fourth, after her third attempt saw her win gold at the State Titles. She will also compete in the 1500m in Sydney, after a bronze medal winning performance at State level.

Tori will compete in the 100m and 200m events and is coming off two personal best efforts at the State Titles, finishing third in the 100s and second in the 200m.

Shylah is also suiting up over the same distances at nationals, finishing fourth in both the 100m and 200m at the State event.

Kaylee Whitehead will enter the nationals in great form, having taken out triple jump gold in State Track & Field Titles, as well as a sixth in the 200m.

Isabel, Tori and Shylah are all in line for a relay berth as well at the Sydney championships.

Isabel has been one of the stories of the centre after an athletics trip to the US visiting a number of schools

reinvigorated her passion for the sport and her desire to push herself as hard as she can.

“We started preparing for these nationals last May,” Sally said. “It has been four nights a week and she never misses a session. She definitely came back from America with a different mindset and to get a national qualifier is absolutely amazing for her.”

Isabel agrees, for her the US trip was a real eye opener. “It was really good, a really different experience,” said Isabel, who was stunned by the quality track and field facilities at every school she visited. “Athletics is a much bigger sport over there and even how much I improved training and competing there was amazing. It has really motivated me.”

Kaylee has also had her sights set on nationals for some time – her focus turning to this month’s Sydney championships last August. “She really started training harder and it’s all paying off,” Sally said.

Both Jacob and Hannah have been sitting on national qualifiers for some time, with Jacob battling injury on and off in his preparations, although has thankfully had a good run in 2017 to allow him to be at his best, with Hannah continually learning the tricks of the trade on her new discipline – steeplechase, as well as working on her 1500m.

Shylah was slightly disappointed with her State Title runs but has been burning up the training track of late as she looks to convert strong training efforts into competition success.

“Going to the nationals is not about winning to me,” Sally said. “I want to focus on their development and getting

the best out of themselves and hopefully posting a personal best effort.”

It has been three years of hard work to get the Mount Gambier squad, which also trains with the Mount Gambier Senior Athletics Club, to this incredible level for such a small squad.

Sally admits, long time mentor Terry McGarrity, from Victoria, who has been a regular visitor to this region in the past and who was a strong supporter of the Mount Gambier Gift, is still her sounding

board as she tests her training methods and sources individual athlete advice.

“I do it (coaching) because I love it,” Sally said. “I see it as my input to the community.”

TAEKWONDO STAR UP FOR STATE SPORTS AWARD He’s at the top of his sport and Mount Gambier’s Kye Todd has been recognised for his achievements with a nomination in the Channel Nine Young Achiever Award in the Worldwide Printing Solutions Sports Award. The 25 year old Taekwondo instructor now has a complete set of international medals, returning from the ITF Taekwondo World Titles, in England last year, with a gold and a bronze medal to go with the silver and the bronze he has won at previous events. Kye has represented Australia on four occasions now and it was a case of fourth time lucky as he bagged his first gold. Kye has been practicing Taekwondo for 15 years, taking it up while living in the Riverland, with the majority of his career being in the South East. “I tried lots of other sports but this was the one I loved,” Kye said.

And it turns out, it was not just a sport he loved but something he was really good at, as well. Kye is a IV Degree black

belt and international instructor, who works with students in Mount Gambier and Millicent, where he also works with children with special needs, as part of the Azure Taekwondo group. Kye was nominated by instructor Matt Raddon for the award, with eventual finalists and winners being acknowledged at a gala event in Adelaide on Friday.

April 28. Kye’s work with special needs students involves around 14 students overall and he believes it is the only martial arts in the area that offers the special needs classes. Across his classes in both Mount Gambier and Millicent, Kye has introduced some incentive programs that include certificate awards to encourage students and self-assessment, where students rank their own strengths and weaknesses.

Kye also has the non-profit club running like a well oiled machine now, with his introduction or membership packs, club newsletters and flexible

payment options. And all the while, he is continuing to work hard with his own training and keeping his own individual goals on track. He currently has the 2018 World Titles in Argentina at the top of his list, with the upcoming Victorian State Titles next month all part of the build up to October selections. ITF Taekwondo has been approved for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, giving Kye a special long term goal to work towards. Leading in the recent world titles, Kye was training up to six days a week, for up to five hours, combining that heavy training load with his work commitments at Anytime Fitness. “My training involves stretching, functional training, weights and all sorts,” he said. “It certainly never gets boring.” Kye’s four international medals are part of a 30 medal haul over his career, which includes a multitude of State and national success. This Wednesday, Australian cricket great Rodney Hogg will headline the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association’s awards presentation for both junior and senior players at the Commodore on the Park. It is always tough to predict just who will walk away with the Whitty Medal but some familiar names loom as contenders with Penola recruit David Somerfield having enjoyed a stunning 2016/17 since becoming an Eagle and North Gambier’s Michael Silvy as consistent as ever, making some strong contributions with the bat.

Team mate Nick McInerney has also had an impact in all forms of the game with both bat and ball, while West Gambier young gun Bowen Hosking has certainly made his mark in senior ranks. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING TRIO ARE STATE TEAM MATES AGAIN In 2016, the South Australian 17 & Under national championship winning netball team had a strong South East flavour with former Western Border juniors Mary Wilson and Sienna Allen part of the line-up, as well as former Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara talent Maisie Nankivell. And the trio is at it again, this time earning selection in the South Australian 19 & Under team which will head to the national championships in Canberra next month. All three are part of the SASI Development squad and have been working overtime as part of that program with three weights sessions a week, two skill sessions and a couple of conditioning sessions, as well. Add to that the regular Sunday State training, with an on court focus, working through structures and team plays and the girls, who are all in the early stages of their Year 12 studies have a full schedule. For Mary, who captained the national championship winning team, earning selection at the next level was amazing. “Any time you get to represent your State, it is an honour and exciting,” she said. “And to be doing it with four of the girls I played with last year makes it even more special.” Mary’s height sees her viewed mainly as a goal shooter at State level but her Premier League club, Oakdale, looks set to utilise her out front as well, realising she has a smart moving game, as well as her strong holding game. It is only early days, but the Scotch College student is coping with juggling school and netball at the moment. “You know when netball training is and where you have to be at what time so you know your down time has to be study time,” she said. “I find the busier I am the better my grades are.” Sienna is also happy to have her second stint in State colours, after debuting in the 17s championship winning team last year. For the rangy defender, it has been a meteoric rise and sometimes she has to pinch herself about where her netball has taken her in the past two years. “I was thinking about it the other day

and if I didn’t take those opportunities, trying out for Western Border and academy teams and then State my life would be completely different now,” she said. Part of Garville’s Premier League squad for the second consecutive season, Sienna has a focus on improving her footwork and taking more risks with reading the play and hunting for the interception.

The Immanuel College student is fortunate she has already mastered time management as she juggles the same study and netball commitments as her team mates. “I just make sure I get enough sleep and recover well and make sure I’m physically prepared and then it’s just a matter of setting aside time to get my school work done,” she said. Maisie, who was vice captain of the championship winning team last season, is also excited that her hard work is paying off with the chance to represent her State again. An Immanuel College student, as well, playing for Premier League club Matrics, Maisie is a highly regarded mid courter. Maisie is a State veteran at only 17, having played SAPSASA, Under 15 Schoolgirls and the past two years in the 17 & under team. “I am really looking to get some consistency in my game,” Maisie said. “I am certainly learning that through playing ANL (Australian National League) at the moment with older players. I also want to work on being netball smart and taking on the drive at the right time.” Maisie feels fortunate to be studying at Immanuel College - a school with a history of managing elite athletes and study commitments. “I just have to prioritise and when I have a heavy school work load that has to be a priority,” she said. “I am lucky managing sporting athletes is nothing new to them (Immanuel) and they are really understanding. I know Term 2 will be the biggest challenge when we have nationals and the Premier League season starts.”
