NATIONAL HERITAGE RALLY IS ON THE HORIZON

The adrenaline is pumping and the excitement building to a crescendo for the members of the Hamilton Pastoral Museum who are proud to present the National Heritage Rally 2017. All the final touches are being added to “Bringing Back the Memories” on the 21st to 23rd April 2017 This year’s National rally is being held at the Hamilton Harness Racing Venue situated 3 km East of Hamilton on the Glenelg Highway. Situated close to the Grampians this brilliant venue offers magnificent views of the mountains and is within an hour’s drive away from Port Fairy, Warrnambool, Mount Gambier and Horsham and all the magnificent features that these, and many other places in the near vicinity have to offer the adventurous tourist.

Closer to home Hamilton also has much to offer including Campe’s Motor Museum, the Ansett Museum and of course our own Hamilton Pastoral Museum as well. For those who are looking for some retail therapy there is a variety of locally owned shops to peruse and tempt you or perhaps you might like to try a wine or two at some of our local wineries, or some handmade chocolates from Coleraine.

You can check out the Volcano Trail, Art Gallery, waterfalls and many other attractions including the Hamilton Racing Club race meeting on the Friday for those partners who perhaps don’t want to spend three days at the Rally.

We thank the exhibitors for their interest in attending the National Rally and promise we will do all in our power to make the effort to attend our event well worthwhile and interesting for all ages. Attractions include: Hay baling, Chaff Cutting, Tractor Pull (with 3 sleds), Steam Traction Engines (who doesn’t love a steam engine?), Working Horse displays, Emu Creek Saw Mill, Tractors, Cars, Stationery Engines, Miniature Train Display, Historical Military Vehicles, Bulldozers, Grand parades, food, activities for the children, market stalls and so much more. A feature this year (we don’t think it has been done before) is a visit to the local school/s on the Thursday prior to the rally by the Burrell Steam Engine “Vasey Lady” and the “Navy Steam Truck”. The exhibitors of these vehicles have kindly agreed to take their treasures of the past to the school children to “Bring Back the Memories” and broaden the knowledge of our young ones. What else but a beautifully restored vehicle could teach you history, science, mechanics and mathematics (how far do I get on a load of wood and a tank or water?) ? And hopefully nurture the appreciation of the wonderful exhibits we will have at the rally for years to come.

UPGRADES TO KELPIE TRAIL PRECINCT UNDERWAY One of the most successful VCAL projects at Casterton Secondary College entered into the construction phase last week, with upgrades to the Kelpie Trail in Casterton’s Ess Lagoon precinct officially underway.

Project works commenced on rejuvenating the Ess Lagoon precinct with the start of re-grading and levelling of the gravel paths on the Kelpie Trail.

This project is a particular win for the community given that the precinct upgrades can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of local students from the Casterton Secondary College.

Last year the Year 12 VCAL Personal Development Skills class worked together to help increase visitation to the Ess Lagoon precinct, with the aim of encouraging families to utilise the tranquil surrounds.

Following public input, the students, along with the help of Glenelg Shire Cr Karen Stephens, put together a funding proposal which outlined improvements for active living within the Ess Lagoon precinct. This proposal was submitted and in late 2016 the Glenelg Shire Council was successful in receiving funding from the Victorian Government for the Casterton Kelpie Trail Active Transport project.

A total of $50,000 was approved to fund upgrades to the precinct, with the State Government providing $30,000 towards the project and the Glenelg Shire Council committing $20,000.

Casterton Secondary College VCAL Teacher Jenni Collinson said that thanks to the efforts of VCAL students Casterton

will now boast an active family-friendly destination in the heart of the town.

“The students should feel a great deal of accomplishment at having received the funding and the work they put in to planning,” she said. “Locals and tourists will soon be able to access outdoor exercise equipment and enjoy a stroll around the Ess Lagoon all year round. It truly is a fantastic outcome for Casterton and the greater region. The Ess Lagoon and Kelpie Trail Upgrades project is now considered to be one of the most successful outcomes of the VCAL Program at Casterton Secondary College.”

Following the completion of upgrades to the Kelpie Trail, further developments

to the precinct will occur.

Other work proposed works include: • Raising the level of the footbridge for year round access • Replacement of picnic tables • Installation of outdoor exercise equipment.

The Casterton Kelpie Trail Active Transport project is due to be completed by end of June 2017.

THE PRIDE OF THE LIMESTONE COAST

The Limestone Coast can stake a claim to being part of history with two South East girls part of the Adelaide Crows inaugural AFL Women’s premiers. Millicent’s Sarah Allan (left) and Mount Gambier’s Jenna McCormick (right) were part of the Crows history making victory on the Gold Coast at the weekend. Allan, who came off the interchange bench finished with four kicks, three handballs, two marks, a hit out and a tackle, while McCormick picked up three kicks, two handballs and two tackles.

PIONEERS START WITH A VICTORY It was all about the start for the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers in their season opener against the Albury Wodonga Bandits.

It saw a 13 point lead built on the back of a 12 point quarter from Luke Jamieson, who relished his place in the starting five. The big man hit two threes in that 12 point first quarter haul, on his way to a game high 24 points, and also added a rebound, assist and block to the stat sheet in an explosive opening term.

Newly appointed skipper Tom Daly hit his first points almost three minutes in and when he hit his last basket of the first quarter, the Pioneers enjoyed a double digit lead and the captain had eight for the term.

Brad Hill was also influential in the opening stanza finishing with seven points an assist and a steal. By the first break, the visitors led by 13 points, 3522, and after an open first quarter, the second quarter saw things tighten up by both teams.

It took almost three minutes for the first score of the quarter, when the Bandits made a lay up and it was almost another two minutes before the Pioneers posted its first score of the quarter courtesy of a Daniel Alexander free throw.

The second quarter ended up 16 apiece, with Jamieson again influential, pulling in five of his 11 rebounds for the game, picking up another block and scoring seven points.

The third quarter was scrappy at best and the Bandits took full toll when the Pioneers turned the ball over, taking the quarter 23-19 to cut the deficit to nine points.

Daly certainly stood tall in the third, finishing with seven points and three rebounds, but the Pioneers were unable to find any real rhythm in offence.

In the final stanza, the Pioneers got the lead back out to 13 points with seven minutes to play – an Alexander dunk restoring the quarter time lead.

But the Bandits refused to lie down and went on a 17-4 run to tie scores away at 81-81 with just under three minutes to play.

Hill restored the lead for the Pioneers with 1:17 on the clock and then Erik Burdon hit a critical three with 48 seconds to play and the home side was unable to bridge the gap, eventually succumbing 87-83.

The Pioneers hit the Icehouse pine this Friday night when they host Bendigo. Tip off is at 8pm.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL FIELD DAYS The South East Field Days serve a number of purposes – it’s a community event that brings visitors and money into

the region, it showcases rural life and everything that makes it special and it is a major fundraiser for the Lucindale Lions

Club that can then be farmed out to key community projects and charities. It has seen donations go to the Bendigo Bank Scholarships ($2000); Royal Flying Doctor Service ($1000); MS Society ($1000); the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research ($1500); Lions Prostrate Cancer Research and Treatment Project ($1500); Lions Save Sight Foundation ($1500) and Lions Cord Blood Foundation ($1500).

While Saturday’s extreme hest slightly affected crowds, there was still thousands through the field days gates on March 17 and 18, with almost 20,000 people visiting the Yakka Park site over the two days of the 39th running of the popular rural showcase. From farm machinery to the animal nursery, from children’s entertainment to fashion parades, from the raft of competitions to the wide range

of rural services and suppliers, the vast Yakka Park grounds housed its usual array of something for everyone. Cox Rural was adjudged the best overall exhibit, while the best single exhibit trophy went the way of Beachport Liquid Minerals (pictured above). Coastal Treasures (pictured right) was awarded the best indoor exhibit, while Pasture Genetics (pictured left) took out the best agricultural machinery or stick handling exhibit trophy.

The scarecrow; mailbox and billycart competitions again attracted a lot of entries as the region’s schools encourage their students to put something together. The other

major competition of the South East Field days is the Yard Dog Championships with multi Australian champion Joe Spicer, who always looks to support the local events like the South East Field Days and Casterton’s Australian Kelpie Muster, topping the tree in the championship event, taking first and third placing, with hometown competitor Travis Ware finishing second by two points. Ware took out the open category and the novice event as well. There were 260 runs completed at the three day Yard Dog Championships, with organisers thrilled to have 32 competitors in the encourage (beginners) class, with some promising kelpies and border collies on show. Plans are already underway for a number of special events at the 2018 South East Field Days as the event celebrates its 40th anniversary.

HARD WASTE DUMPING DAYS To reduce the incidence of illegal dumping and in response to requests from the community the Naracoorte Lucindale Council is holding two days of free household hard waste disposal. On Saturda,y, April 1, and Sunday, April 2, between 9am and 4.30pm, the Naracoorte Waste Transfer Station will be open for members of the community to dispose of household hard waste at no cost to the individual.

Items that will be accepted are: • Furniture – tables, chairs, wardrobes, beds and mattresses • Whitegoods – washing machines, dryers, ovens and refrigerators and freezers that have been degassed • Floor coverings (up to 2 metre lengths) • Sheets of iron and guttering (up to 2 metre lengths) • Timber off cuts, including pallets (up to 2 metre lengths) • Dismantled clothes lines • Blinds and window coverings • Bikes and toys • Air conditioners • Small items of scrap metal • Hot water systems • Lawn mowers • Rainwater tanks (segments up to 2 metre lengths) • TVs and e-waste • Household quantities of bricks, rocks, dirt, pavers, concrete and building materials • Dry paint It’s anticipated that the Waste Transfer Station will be busy over the two hard waste days, with this in mind it’s preferable that other types of waste are not disposed of during this time such as recycling including oil and batteries and green and putrescible waste. In the instance of other waste being delivered normal rates will be charged as listed in council’s fees and charges guide.

Items that will not be accepted free of charge are: • Green and putrescible waste • Asbestos (by appointment only) • Business or industrial waste Items that are not accepted at the Waste Transfer Station, including during the Hard Waste days are: •Gas bottles • Tyres • Car parts • Household chemicals • Hazardous waste • Treated timber (CCA, creosote) • Car bodies The free household hard waste disposal days is one method council is trialling to reduce illegal dumping. Council also participates in the Garage Sale Trail which helps people sell their unwanted “stuff” and encourages the reuse of stuff.

The Garage Sale Trail in 2017 will be a weekend of Garage Sales on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October.

BANQUET SOARS TO RECORD HIGHS The Branson family’s annual Banquet Angus bull sale has regularly delivered top end results, but even those high standards were exceeded late last month at Mortlake. There was another total clearance of the 89 very impressive ‘Big Bold Banquet Bulls’ to go through the auction sale ring, these selling for a Banquet record average of $9169 and topping at $52,000, another Banquet record. These were up $300 and $31,000 respectively on last year’s very good sale result.

In introducing the first lot to the big crowd of close to 300 people and containing more than 90 registered bidders from five States, Landmark auctioneer Kevin Norris said Banquet was one of the most prepotent female herds in the country and it showed in the quality of the bulls.

The $52,000 record and sale topping bull was the 19 month old Banquet Lukas L200 (AI). Sired by the USA bull Sydgen Black Pearl 2006, this 740kg bull took the eye of many in the presale inspection pens and this flowed through to the sale ring with a flurry of bidding until it settled down to the final two bidders for the last quarter of bidding action.

Winning that battle was Alex Scott Agency’s Rob Ould, bidding on behalf of John and Peter Blyth, Blyth Bros, Fernleigh Angus, Elmbank, Victoria. Blyth Bros are regular Banquet purchasers, including paying the sale top in 2014 at $30,000. This record exceeded Banquet’s previous high of $50,000 which was achieved in 2005,

which was also an Angus breed record at the time, when Banquet Time Frame Y135 sold to Stephen Handbury.

The smooth skinned Lukas L200 had wonderful balanced Breedplan figures, including +4.2 for birth weight, +18 for Milk, +50, +88 and +115 for 200, 400 and 600 day weight and + 6.6 for EMA, while also having strong bone and a stud sire’s powerful head and muzzle.

The sale’s second top price was set earlier in proceedings when regular Banquet supporters Charles and Cass Kimpton, Toora West stud, Glenthompson outlaid $30,000 to purchase the exceptionally powerful and huge growth lot 6 bull, Banquet Leigh L010. Sired by Aberdeen Estate Homer H70, this 23 month old was the heaviest bull in the catalogue at 945kg, with growth figures of +53, +93 and +135 for the three weight categories.

Banquet Liverpool L186 (AI) by Silveiras Conversion 8064 was another to exceed last year’s $21,000 top price when purchased by Gilmandyke Angus, Orange, NSW for $22,000. This 720kg and 18 month old youngster attracted a lot of pre-sale interest and was brought forward 21 places in the catalogue to be sold after lot three. Three exciting ET yearling bulls were included in the offering, these selling to $18,000 and averaging $14,333 to buyers from three states. Banquet Mantra M003 went to Mark Scott, Mole Creek, Tasmania for $18,000, bidding via phone connection with Landmark’s Peter Godbolt.

established when Matthew and Charmayne Clarke, Pinegrove Station, Hawker purchased two bulls to $12,000 and averaging $10,000. “We put Angus over our Shorthorn and Santa females and have found the best bulls we have used in the past have all had Banquet bloodlines, so we decided to come direct to the source,” Matthew Clarke said.

Volume buying featured two buying accounts in particular. Peter Rollason, facilitating the Auctions Plus bidding, purchased 11 bulls from $4000 to $7000, with eight of these going to Mark Stoney, Bass, south east of Melbourne. Chris Stanley, IChris Stanley Livestock was again a strong buyer for client Gippsland Water, Traralgon, purchasing six bulls to $12,000 and at a

$7833 average.

Elders auctioneer Ross Milne highlighted the value on offer saying it was a great sale result but there were plenty of top value bulls in the sale, while some others made more than expected. To verify this, 32 bulls (35%) sold for $10,000 or better, while the same percentage sold from $4000 to $6000, so there were good bulls for every budget.

Other prominent Victorian buyers included Dunkeld Pastoral Co, Dunkeld (two to $14,000 average $11,000), P Delaney, Murroa East, Hamilton (two to $14,000 average $10,000), Doug Robertson, Nangana, Grassdale (two to $13,000 average $10,500), Jim Shaw, Winniburn, (two to $12,000 average $9500), C & R Wallis, Hamilton (two to

$11,000 average $9000), RA Howarth & VL Jones, Correlup, Mortlake (two to $11,000 average $9000) and the James family, A J Farms, Casterton (two to $13,000 average $9000).

Regular repeat clients dominated the buying list, with senior principal Stephen Branson paying tribute to their loyal support post sale and in particular three who first purchased from Banquet 22 years ago; the James family being one, Keith and Merryl Diprose, Chartwell Farms, Romsey another (one bull at $15,000), with the third being Mick and David Page, Penshurst (one bull at $11,000).

With the 122 commercial Banquet blood PTIC heifers sold immediately prior to the bull sale by Jack Hickey (who has won the right to compete in the National Young Auctioneers final) and account Margaret and Robbie Patterson, the sale’s gross on the day exceeded $1.17 million.

The Lions Club of Kingston is set to hold its annual Maria Creek easter Duck Classic on Easter Sunday (April 16).

Running from 12noon to 1pm, with cash and goods as prizes, tickets are $5 each with the ducks having been donated by Beaumont Tiles Mount Gambier.

Funds raised are earmarked for breast cancer, prostate cancer and the Kingston Community School Nature Park.

There is a limit of 500 ducks to be pre-purchased before the event, which starts at Maria Creek, which is opposite the Lions Shed.

FROM THE SOUND OF MUSIC TO BAYVIEW For the past five years the hills have been alive with the sound of music - and teaching – for new Bayview College teachers Warrick Bottrall and Trish Gray.

The couple has been teaching at the elite private boarding school St Gilgen International School, in the lakes district in the Austrian Alps that provided the spectacular backdrop to the film classic Sound of Music.

Mr Bottrall and Ms Gray have recently returned to Australia and joined Bayview College at the start of the 2017 school year. Their international experience has brought a fresh perspective to Bayview.

“You bring new blood and new energy and different skills sets when you’ve been exposed to different curriculum from around the world,” Ms Gray said.

“In the international setting you meet people from all walks of life, which

enrich your own personal experience which then translates into your teaching and the relationship you form with students.”

While enjoying their new home town, they have moved from one of the world’s most famous film locations on the banks of Lake Wolfgang where Sound of Music was made.

“It’s picture postcard perfect for the whole year; it’s jaw-dropping gorgeous every day,” Mr Bottrall said. Fans of the film will be happy to know the pristine area is just as beautiful as it was in the 1960s. “It’s the same now as it was in the movie,” Mr Bottrall said. The region capitalises on the scenic backdrop with Sound of Music tours through the village two or three times a day. During summer the area is a popular lakes holiday resort with temperatures in the

mid-30s; during winter it’s a ski resort with temperatures down to -25. That’s a far cry from the average Australian winter, but Warrick and Trish quickly adapted. “It’s surprising how well you cope,” he said. “These countries have been doing winter very well for a long time. Most would expect with weather that cold everyone would be inside but people dress appropriately and all the restaurants and venues cater very well for the cold weather.”

Warrick and Trish both graduated from Ballarat University (now Federation Uni) and taught in different Ballarat schools for 12 years before moving to Europe. “We loved our work but decided there was more to be done and while we had a young family we thought let’s do what we do best overseas,” Mr Bottrall said. Their children were aged from four to three months at the time. The St Gilgen school was built by an eccentric millionaire who had a vision to create the seven most beautiful schools in the seven most beautiful locations in the world. Mr Bottrall became the boarding master, which raised its own share of challenges.

“There were very affluent families because the school fees were extraordinarily high,” he said. “The families were unique and had their own nuances that made being a boarding master very challenging but also very rewarding. We had Royalty, bodyguards, European sports superstars and many very influential families.”

One of the attractions for the pair was the ability to influence the curriculum in their physical education field. “The school was very much in line with my ideals,” Mr Bottrall said. “With my colleagues we had free reign to create a curriculum that we thought was best. You don’t get that opportunity in many places.” They created a program based on an ideal called movement and wellbeing while retaining commonalities with the curriculum set in any international school. Mr Bottrall also spoke about the changes at the European Council of International Schools. However, the school struggled financially and eventually fell into compulsory insolvency and was taken over by the Austrian court. “We hung on but needed to get ongoing employment

so we returned to Australia.”

After retreating to Mansfield to plan their next move, they found an ad for the job at Bayview, which eventually turned into dual positions.

“We didn’t want to go to a city,” Ms Gray said. “We like what regional communities and surroundings offer families.” The advertisement highlighted the wellbeing focus of the school. “That’s where I’m focussing all my professional energy so that really attracted me,” he said. “We’re passionate about education and with three small children this worked out perfectly.” Warrick is teaching psychology and physical education and is in charge of wellbeing for the school while Trish is teaching physical education, health and science.

“What we’ve seen of Portland is gorgeous and we’re really enjoying the environment at Bayview. It’s a very impressive school,” Mr Bottrall said.

“We love being by the coast,” Ms Gray said. “There’s something very tranquil about being by the water; the location of the school is amazing.”

MILLICENT FLORAL ART The Millicent Floral Art and Garden Club will be holding its third annual display which is timed to coincide with the Geltwood Festival this year. The display of around 40 floral designs will be held at the Millicent Presbyterian Church Hall, Sixth Street, Millicent, running from March 31 to April 2.

Members of the public are invited to attend from 1pm to 3pm on Friday 31st March, then from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd April. Entry is $5.

The Inner City Beautification initiative is a joint partnership between the Independent Learning Centre and the City of Mount Gambier, designed to upgrade the Percy Street car park garden.

Students from the Independent Learning Centre are transforming the area as part of their SACE studies in Community Engagement/ Integrated Learning.

The project timeline is the calendar year of 2017. Students will work on the project every Thursday and Friday during school terms The project will include removal of unwanted vegetation, earthworks, laying of pavers, the possible establishment of community art-work, and the establishment of a shaded seating area for clients of Percy Street Building.

This initiative has been made possible by the generous donation from Stand Like Stone and the Mount Gambier City Council. The garden project is one on an increasing list of projects where ILC students are actively contributing to the community.

LOCAL SPORT FEDERAL GOES BACK TO BACK IN DIVISION ONE BASEBALL

Federal has secured back to back division one titles with a come from behind nailbiting win in the best of three grand final series. On Friday night, in game one, minor premiers Central looked a class above in the early going with Josh Aston dominating from the mound and Central finding some good consistency with the bat. By the bottom of the fifth, Central had a 4-1 lead – Aston had the powerful Federal bats under control and Central was able to string hits together to take advantage of runners on base. Federal managed to score again at the top of the seventh but Central looked unlikely to be challenged as they scored themselves and restored the three run lead, extending it at the bottom of the eighth to a four run lead, piling all the pressure on Federal to get its act together their final time at bat. And did the reigning premiers respond as they got hold of Aston on the mound, and the clinical Central fielding suddenly had chinks and the runs started to mount. With the scoreline at 6-5, with Central still in the lead, young gun Ethan Chuck took a stunning and critical catch at right field to end Federal’s charge and handed the minor premiers a 1-0 series lead. Game two saw Dylan Chuck start on the mound for Central but rather than the tentative start in the batting box from game one, Federal came out swinging – literally - Blayke McMillan bunting the first pitch of the match and then the Federal top order finding the gaps, with a Ryan Broome single to right field seeing

Federal scoring the first run of the match and when Sam Shepherd holed out to centrefield, Federal’s early onslaught was over and the defending champions enjoyed a 2-0 lead. Central hit back quickly when a Dylan Ridding three bagger over right field allowed his team to score. But from that point on, Federal was the team that always looked like scoring and it was Broome again allowing a team mate to cross the plate at the top of the third with a two bagger to right field.

It was catcher Kyall McClean who ended what looked like another dangerous charge when he threw out the runner at third, giving Federal a 3-1 lead. It was a wild pitch at the top of the fourth that allowed Federal to extend that lead to 4-1, while in the interim, Central either had all sorts of trouble even getting on base as they faced the pitching of Nathan Taylor and when they did, the runners were often left stranded without doing any scoreboard damage. The Federal outfield was peppered as Central seemed to look to hit themselves out of the hole with home run style batting but Federal took every catch that came their way and in the end game two went their way 5-1. Game three was always going to be tense and it was Central who appeared to have rediscovered its mojo. With Ben Atkins on the mound, Central started the decider with a clinical three up three down. And they looked better in the batting box as well. Despite going two down quickly, Dylan Chuck then found safe territory at right field, followed

by a safe hit to left field from Ridding before Joe Atkins hit safely down the third base line to see the minor premiers draw first blood. Things were tight in the next couple of digs and even though Federal was able to secure loaded bases at the top of the fourth, it was unable to capitalise with Central holding its nerve and finding the final out before any scoreboard damage was done. Almost sensing the danger, Central again knuckled down in the batting box with Ridding again hitting safely and when Joe Atkins has struck out a wild throw allowed Ridding to find his way to third. Ben Atkins could only find the infield with his bat but it still allowed Ridding to cross the plate and gave Central a 2-0 lead. It was as if a different Central headed out to the diamond at the top of the fifth – clinical in the field for four innings, the errors started to flow. Broome’s power from the batting box again came to the fore as he hit a two bagger that saw Federal level the game at 2 apiece and were it not for a stunning diving save from second base Dylan Gull, who then completed the out at first, the damage would have been worse. Federal pitcher Alex Reppin seemed to assume control over the Central batting line-up for the next couple of digs and then it unravelled a little in the field again for Central.

After opening the top of the seventh with a strike out, Ben Atkins then gave up a walk, before an error in the infield saw Federal start to build a dangerous position on base. Sam Shepherd strode to the plate with bases again loaded and when he was accidentally hit by an off target delivery, Federal had the lead, and it was another stunning Gull five that stopped another opportunity to score as he made the out again. In the next couple of innings, Federal was unable to extend its lead and Central, likewise, could not bridge the gap. The scoreline remained 3-2 as Central stepped up for its last time at bat. Reppin opened with a strike out before an error in the field, compounded by a wild throw, saw Ridding find his way to second. Federal’s outfield again proved composed as catches at centre field and right field ended the innings and the match with Federal holding on to secure consecutive titles. Central short stop Dylan Ridding, who was consistent with the bat, as well, across all three games, was named series MVP but Federal was the team doing the celebrating. Losing their original coach a couple of months ago, club stalwart Scott Simpson took up the challenge and after a shaky middle portion of the season, Federal was able to produce its best baseball when it counted the most.

A remarkable putt occurred on the 9th when John Shepherd overhit the green, and then from high on the hill, sunk a 50 footer to get a 2 for 4.

LOCAL SPORT JUNIOR TENNIS PREMIERS DECIDED

After an extremely successful season, Lakes Junior Tennis matches came to a conclusion with Grand Finals on Friday, March 24, and Saturday, March 25.

All matches were held in front of large crowds at the Olympic Park Complex over the two days. Friday night saw Division A and B Boys and Girls teams battle for their respective premierships under lights in perfect match conditions. Saturday morning then saw Division C, D and E Boys and Girls teams in beautiful autumn conditions vie for their respective premierships. All matches were completed, with some very close results. Presentations were held at the conclusion of each session for Grand Final winners and runners up. Included in these presentations also, were winners and runners up of the Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles tournaments and Representative Team members. At the conclusion of presentations, West Gambier Tennis Club was announced as the winner of the Tournament Cup for the highest percentage representation at Lakes Junior Tennis tournaments. Lakes Junior Tennis players will now look forward to the 2017/18 season.

The Borderline Speedway’s 60th anniversary celebrations received a boost last week when the club was awarded $5000 in Active Club funding, which will go towards the hosting of the 2018 Australian Sprintcar Championships. The motor racing giant was one of six clubs to enjoy a share of almost $30,000 in Active Club funding that came the way of the Limestone Coast. The Active Club funding was announced at a function last Thursday night headlined by State Minister for Recreation and Sport Leon Bignell, where 20 clubs across this region were presented with their level four STARCLUB accreditation. Clubs receive STARCLUB level four certification when they meet criteria which shows they are well-run, with quality coaches, officials and volunteers working together to create a safe and welcoming environment.
