DUAL CODE RISING STAR WINS COMMERCIAL CLUB AWARD Since 2010, the Commercial Club hands over a $1000 award to a sporting high achiever and the 2016 awardee, Bella Stratford – certainly gits the bill. Bella is not just performing at th elite level in basketball but also cricket and she has been regular State representative in both disviplines, when scheduling has allowed. The Exceptional Junior Award was presented last month, acknoeldging Bella’s The awardee for 2016 of the Commercial Club - Exceptional Junior Award goes to young Basketball and Cricket high achiever Isabella Stratford exceptional commitment and skills to achieve excellence in her chosen sport, or in this case - sports. The Commercial Club sponsored award is handed out by the Mount Gambier Junior Sports Assistance Fund and presiding member Hannah Persello was thrilled to be able to hand over the $1000 donation to the award’s seventh recipient. “The fund invited its member organisations to consider nominating not more than two of its juniors who display natural talent and the ability to achieve their fullest potential and really excel in their sport,” Cr Persello said. “The decision was not easy because of the excellence of each nomination.” Isabella got the nod, not just because of her on court and field achievements but because she gives back to both sports through umpiring and coaching. “The fund is aware that our community produces young sportspersons with real talent but to truly succeed they require a significant financial investment by the junior and

by the family,” Cr Persello said. “The fund is very proud to offer a donation of $1000 that might help a junior and that junior’s family in their efforts to excel in their chosen sport. The award is named the Commercial Club Exceptional Junior Award in recognition of the club’s longstanding and generous financial support to the fund.” Bella has barely turned 15 but she has a jam packed resume that has seen her representing this region since 2010, and South

Australia, in one sport or another, since 2014. Whether cricket or basketball, Bella has excelled, representing her school, region and State and this year she was also part of the 2016 Tenison Woods College Open Girls Knockout Football Championship winning lineup. Bella has represented the State in cricket at both Under 13 and Under 15 age groups since 2014 – playing both age groups in that year. On the basketball front, Bella was part of the

Known for his prowess on a soccer pitch and not for tripping the light fantastic on the dance floor, Christian Cella does have one advantage over all his competitors in the 2017 Swinging With The Stars – he lives with the dance teacher.

Wife Kim Cella, is again in charge of the choreography and skill development of the 2017 stars but she has vowed there will be no special treatment for her husband. With a two and four year old to keep him on his toes, Christian, the second of our stars to be profiled in the lead up to the June competition, is bound to be light on his feet but whether he can convert his fancy footwork for International Soccer Club into a mirror ball winning performance remains to be seen. A good sign for Christian, is just as he is a late starter to dancing, he was also a late starter with soccer – only taking up the sport as a 16 year old. But since then he has played in 11 A Grade premierships for the powerhouse International club and has been captain for five of those titles. It shows, Christian is a man who clearly develops a high skill level quickly and has a determination to succeed. His brief dancing career also brought him success – although not for his dancing.

He joined a hip hop class when he was younger and that’s how he met Kim, who was the teacher, and eventually married her. A building design and draftsman at Concept Design Group, where he is also a director, Christian knows the importance of attention to detail – it’s the foundation on which he has built his career. Christian began his career as a carpenter, working alongside his father

The Glenelg Shire Council will receive much-needed funding to assist with flood recovery efforts following an announcement from both the Federal and State Governments. Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and Acting Victorian Minister for Emergency Services Lisa Neville announced a Community Recovery Fund of up to $3.4 million for the Southern Grampians and Glenelg Council areas, which were significantly impacted by the Victorian floods in September and October 2016.

The Glenelg Shire will receive a total of $1.119 million to go towards infrastructure projects and rebuilding community assets in the hardest hit township of Casterton. Council will

will bring that competitive instinct out in me.” Christian is raising money for the Stand Like Stone Foundation. “I like that the money stays locally and I know they support a variety of different community causes,” Christian said. “I am hoping the money I raise might be able to help with funding athletes who need some help for travelling and things like that for their sport.” In fact the biggest challenge for the couple is securing babysitters during rehearsal times. “That was always me but now we need to find someone else.”

also receive $130,000 for resources to manage this program Glenelg Shire Council Flood Recovery Manager Bruce Farquharson said that the funding announcement was excellent news and would help to enhance current flood recovery activities.

“It is great to see that the Glenelg Shire will receive support to help continue the extensive clean-up efforts,” he said. “This funding will help with the rebuilding and restoration of many flood damaged sporting facilities and public buildings, which are the life blood of the close knit communities such as Casterton. Initial works helped sporting groups to keep operating and this funding will enable full repairs to be carried out for damaged facilities.”

Mr Farquharson also praised the efforts of Casterton community, who have worked tirelessly over the past six months to help get the town back on its feet. “It is a great outcome for the people of Casterton and surrounds, who have demonstrated their resilience during the flood recovery process,” he said.

Flood recovery efforts continue to making steady progress in the Glenelg Shire, with demolition works occurring at Casterton’s Island Park’s tennis and netball clubhouse to make way for a replacement building.

A grant was received in 2016 from Sports Recreation Victoria (SRV) to upgrade the existing netball and tennis facilities at Island Park Casterton. It was originally intended to extend the original footprint to house new change rooms, including toilets, showers and storage.

Following the Spring floods, the scope of the project was amended to include demolition of the existing infrastructure and construction of a new facility that would withstand flooding.

WATTLE RANGE HONOURS ITS YOUNG ACHIEVERS

The 2017 Wattle Range Youth Recognition Awards presentation night was held last month at the Penola High School Hall. The awards celebrate the region’s quiet achieving young people and is Wattle Range Council’s way of recognising the importance and value of young people to the community. Youth from 12-25 years were recognised across five award categories. Every nominee received a certificate and gift bag, and each of the five award winners received a certificate, glass plaque and $200 prize money. Guest speaker on the night was Dallas Skeer, an inspirational Wattle Range based youth, who is a champion motorbike racer. Dallas holds the Mac Park Outright Record for the 125 Class; is the Hartwell Club Champion and was the 2017 Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year for the Kintore Ward. The five awards each represent a unique aspect of community life.

Contributions to the Community Award

Recognises an individual who has made a positive contribution to the community, has volunteered their time to help others and/or is an active member of the community (Volunteering with community group/school). This award was won by Alex Guenther of Kalangadoo. At 24 years of age Alex is one of the founding members of the Kalangadoo Farmers’ Markets, which which has now been operating for five years. He has served on the committee ever since and two years ago he became the president. An active member of the Lions’ Club of Kalangadoo, he contributes to cooking the Australia Day and Anzac Day breakfasts as well as doing the dishes afterwards. When he joined Lions at 16 he was the youngest member of Lions in Australia. This award was sponsored by The Medical Clinic Millicent.

Employment Achievement Whilst Learning Recognises an individual whose

innovation and ideas have been recognised by peers. This award was won by Felicity Drury of Mount Burr. Felicity completed SACE in 2016, particularly applying herself to the Community Studies subject. She interacted with many community members such as the pre-schoolers at the Penola Community Library and the residents of Pinchunga Aged Care Facility, whilst also undertaking a Certificate III Individual Support (Ageing).

She now works at Boneham Aged Care Services in Millicent. Whilst studying she has honed her skills in dealing with people through her part time work in the hospitality industry. This award was sponsored by Kimberly Clark Australia.

Helping Out Family and/or Friends Recognises an individual who has tirelessly assisted a family or friend in need. This award was won by James Krieger of Kalangadoo. James is a Year 10 student at Penola High School and

Last year she studied Stage 2 German while in Stage 1 through Open Access and for her determination she received an ‘A’ and an Open Access College Award. She also undertook a Stage 2 Art Subject also receiving an ‘A’ and placed in the SACE Board Art Show.

She also won the Kalangadoo heat of the Lions Youth of the Year Quest. Aliza’s

They have had the courage to get through a bad situation and show great resilience and determination. This person is someone who inspires others. This year there were two outstanding candidates for this award and it was decided to award joint winners. This award was won by Lucy Williams of Penola and Jessica Markey of Tantanoola. Lucy has shown tremendous resilience in being an integral part of the Tenison Woods College community after her father took his life in 2014. Lucy helped organise a Men’s Night with the aim of promoting positive mental health amongst men in our community. She

delivered a brave and moving speech about growing up without her father.

Jessica has shown determination and persistence in pursuing her career goal despite suffering from continuous medical issues. Jessica was born with a medical condition which meant that she spent many of her formative years in hospital. Consequently, she missed out on important parts of her education and she had to fight hard to keep up with her peers In 2016 Jessica underwent a major operation spending 4-6 weeks in hospital. Returning to school months later in a wheel chair, she continued her schooling and started back at TAFE. She then suffered another setback which resulted in further surgery. Despite the prospect of having to use crutches for the next six months she regularly attended TAFE and volunteered at Sheoak Lodge

and Boneham Aged Care Services. Her long term goal is to be a nurse and Jessica is driven by the desire to give back to the profession that has helped her for most of her life. This award was sponsored by the Wattle Range Council.

BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO THE HEART OF THE CITY Some things never change and for Mount Gambier’s Jens Hotel, to a certain extent, that is true.

The stunning 19th century facade pays homage to the early days of Mount Gambier’s oldest hotel, and the stunning central staircase and chandelier, still popular for wedding and formal photos, also remains true to a bygone era.

But in so many ways, the last few months have been all about change.

Step inside the Commercial Street East hotel and the interior has undergone a transformation that has to be seen to be believed.

There is the UBET Sports Bar – the only UBET facility outside metropolitan

Adelaide – with its upgraded pressed tin bar; spacious seating area, wall to wall screens, as well as Fox Sports HD throughout the hotel so you don’t need to miss a minute of the action across every imaginable sporting contest.

The Sports Bar is also perfectly located adjacent to the dining room so you can start your evening with some casual drinks before sitting down and enjoying the range of burgers that have fast become a speciality of Jens, as well as the usual delicious pub fare you’ve come to expect from the Jens kitchen.

The Sports Bar also flows into a cafe style dining area that later this year will see breakfast added to the Jens menu

and then there’s the newly established beer garden that caters for 100 patrons, either for a casual catch up with friends, or a private function.

Industrial chic meets Melbourne inner city laneway would best describe the newly created outdoor space and as Autumn comes to an end what sun we are enjoying spills into the yet to be named beer garden, and it will be the place to be when the warm weather returns in Spring.

The beer garden also boasts a 75” big screen TV but for all the new technology that the latest redevelopment has included, there is still plenty of references to the past.

The hotel has sourced some delightful historic shots of the iconic hotel over its 170 year history and they hold pride of place on the walls, while the stunning fireplaces also look set to be fired up for the winter months.

Aaron Davis has been managing Jens for the past 12 months and with the current redevelopment barely complete he already has a swag of plans – plans that will take patrons underground.

The cellar area of Jens Hotel is a whole other world filled with potential. Time has forgotten this area of the hotel but with original window frames and the

The original site of the small building held the license of the first hotel in Mt Gambier from 1847. After demolishing the primitive structure the first section of the present hotel was built on the corner in 1884 for Johannes Jens and was then named The Town Hall Hotel An eastern wing was constructed in 1904 and the limestone addition in Watson Terrace was built in 1927. The cast iron lace balcony and verandah are a focal point of the century old section and with recent restoration; the original dolomite has been exposed. The complex is a far cry from the humble slab and bark roofed inn which first traded on this site with mine host John Byng, an American negro, who was one of the first to establish a commercial enterprise in Mount Gambier. TILING In 1892 WR Allison Snr. designed a new Coffee Palace for Adolf Rubenkonig. It was constructed on this site by local tradesmen including Joseph Hosking Jnr. Detached buildings at the rear functioned as a bakehouse and a kitchen dining room complex. In 1913 Mrs Jessie Fitzgerald leased the property and conducted a similar business until sold in 1922 to Jens Hotel. The upper storey became staff quarters and the shops below were leased. The bakehouse at the rear operated until the 1950s. Recent redevelopment has restored the original character of the building.

Over the decades there have been many changes to Rubenkoning’s once “new and commodious premises.”

The building is entered on the State Heritage Register.

“It’s accommodation in the heart of the city, you couldn’t get a bett er location,” Aaron said. A stone’s throw fr om the entertainment precinct, cafe culture and retail hubs, Jens Hotel combines inner city convenience with old world charm.

Th irty-two poker machines are still part of the Jens Hotel complex, housed in a gorgeous historical surrounds, opening fr om 8am till late.

Aaron is looking to invigorate a live music scene at Jens, with a DJ turning back to the clock to the 80s and 90s and

the songs that always filled the dance floor. “We are looking to make Jens a destination where people can have a fun, safe night out catching up with friends,” Aaron said.

Seating has also been added to the Commercial Street East frontage of the hotel to add to the Watson Terrace outdoor dining area.

It’s safe to say while the current transformation is amazing, it is only the beginning.

Known for their craft ciders, The Cide Project, is made up of eight mates, who decided they might as well do something useful with their spare time.

The group includes a winemaker, nurse, two horhorticultalitsts, who own a small orchard in Kalangadoo, a marketing man, a graphic designer, and two vignerons who are skilled in viticulture and the wine industry.

The Cide Project is all about tradition and utilises traditional apple varieties like Lord Lambourne and Belle de Boskoop, all grown in their own orchard in pristine Kalangadoo, in South Australia’s Limestone Coast.

French and English cider varieties were also utilised for the 2016 vintage.

Traditional tools and techniques are the foundation of The Cide Project and thier products as well as a traditional passion for great cider.

Chilli con carne with sweet potato dippers 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 red onion, finely chopped 1 red capsicum 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh coriander roots and stems 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tablespoon ground cumin 3 teaspoons smoked paprika 2 teaspoons dried oregano leaves 1 1/2 teaspoons ground coriander 1/2-3/4 teaspoons ground chilli Brave Mount Gambier High School staff and students shaved their heads for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave earlier this month.

Ten students and four staff members participated, raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Every day, 35 Australians are diagnosed with blood cancers such as Leukaemia, Lymphoma, or Myeloma, and they turn to the Leukaemia Foundation for help. The World’s Greatest Shave allows the Leukaemia Foundation to give families the support they need along

with funding vital research to help more people survive. Hosted by retiring senior school assistant principal Tim Dyer, Mount Gambier High School was able to raise more than $500 on the day bringing the total funds raised to more than $1500 thanks to the individual efforts of the students participating.

Tafe SA’s Lorraine Stevens and Darren Bowyer and Jacinta Morton, from Hair Envy, and Hayley Bartolo, from Hair and Beauty by Hayley, volunteered their services on the day.

500g beef mince 2 x 410g cans tinned tomatoes 2/3 cup water 400g can kidney beans 1/3 cup chopped fresh coriander, plus extra whole leaves, to serve 800g small sweet potatoes Grated cheddar, to serve Sour cream, to serve Guacamole, to serve

Method Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook onion and capsicum, stirring, for 5 minutes or until softened. Add coriander root and stem, and garlic. Cook until aromatic. Add cumin, paprika, oregano, ground coriander and chilli. Cook, stirring, until aromatic. Increase heat to mediumhigh. Add 1 tablespoon oil and mince. Stir for 5 minutes or until browned.

Stir in tomato and water. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer, stirring often, for 30 minutes. Stir in beans. Simmer, covered, for 10 minutes. Season. Stir in chopped coriander. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 210C/190C fan forced. Place sweet potato on a lined baking tray. Drizzle with remaining oil. Season. Toss to coat. Cook, turning halfway, for 40-45 minutes or until caramelised. Serve chilli con carne with dippers, cheese, sour cream, guacamole and extra coriander.

on with toilet manufacturers that they feel they need to attach bizarre stickers to the porcelain? I didn’t miss an announcement from the National Toilet Maker Association that they were running some sort of crazy national competition to see who could come up with the weirdest sticker, did I? Have a look at the information on this sticker. Now let’s ignore the fact that it obviously lost something in translation. I’m not really sure if the sticker is advising on the installation of the toilet seat, or whether it is some sort of safety information to ensure that you don’t lose an arm (or something more important) while using the toilet seat.

Let’s assume it is some sort of safety information. We do live in a particularly litigious society where people feel they need to give an extraordinary amount of safety information to ensure stupid people won’t sue them for doing something that they should have been able to figure out for themselves.

Warning labels on coffee cups informing people that the contents are hot is a classic example. I’ve always been of the opinion that people should counter sue with their argument being that the person they served the hot coffee to didn’t have a tattoo on their forehead

declaring they were stupid and had no common sense. In days gone by, these stupid people would have gone to a waterhole and been eaten by a crocodile. And the world would be a better, smarter, more sensible place.

I think once again toilet manufacturers are getting a bit ahead of themselves making their products seem more than what they are. The left and right buffer axes? Store energy?

I’m pretty sure they’re actually writing a question for this year’s physics exam.

design really hasn’t changed at all since it was created. Sure, we’ve transitioned from chain flush to button flush. There was the earth shattering revelation of the half flush in the 90s to add to the full flush. But it’s a toilet.

Having said that, I’m surprised we haven’t seen some innovation.

Considering how much butt sizes have changed over the last couple of decades, you would think we’d be seeing some changes to toilet sizes. Quite possibly houses should be legislated to have a couple of toilets of varying sizes. You need the big ones so obese people aren’t hanging over the sides, and then probably tiny ones so that all these anorexic gym junkies don’t fall in when

they go to sit down.

The more I thought about this issue though, the more I wondered what was going on. It seemed like someone may be behind the scenes pulling the strings on this sticker scam for their own personal gain. Who had something to profit on this weird toilet business? Was it bigger than just the bathroom product industry? And then it came to me: the sticker making industry. They’re making a killing attaching warning stickers to perfectly safe products. My advice would be get some shares in sticker making because people are getting stupider.

REIGNING CHAMPIONS SET TO JUDGE HAMILTON DANCE CONTEST THE RESILIENCE PROJECT RETURNS Mount Gambier rock and roll dancers Louise Gilbert and Peter Milich are set to represent the local club in Hamilton next month. The duo won the 2016 Spirit of Rock and Roll Award at the annual Hamilton dance and as reigning champions are invited to select who should wear the crown in 2017. And it won’t be an easy decision, for the dynamic dancing pairing, who were happy to return to the scene of the triumph and judge the 2017 contenders, as there is more than 150 participants and judging is across the entire evening of performances – not just one pre-rehearsed item. The Spirit of Rock and Roll Award encompasses skill, presentation, endurance and an obvious display of the pleasure of dancing. Louise and Peter are long standing members of the Mount Gambier Rock and Roll Club and always encourage new and existing members to develop their dancing skills and just have fun. Rock and roll dancing is a great physical exercise, as well as good for your mental health, and it is an activity you can tailor to your own pace. There is a wide variety of tempo and styles used across any given night, with many and varied moves and some fun set routines to learn. Dancing is also a great social activity, with many people in the local club having made friends within the region and Australia wide as a result of kicking up their heels. The Mount Gambier club has been running for many years and tried to get involved in as many community events as possible, including regular

public dance demonstrations and a float in Mount Gambier’s Annual Christmas Parade. The club welcomes all ages and abilities. 2017 ROBE CHINESE FESTIVAL

The 2017 Robe Chinese Festival is a three day festival celebrating Robe’s unique Chinese history.

Melbourne based Company The Resilience Project returned to Naracoorte High School this month to provide students with some valuable life lessons on mental health. Education manager and presenter of the nationally renowned program Martin Heppell (pictured above) engaged more than 140 Year 7 students and 8 students from Naracoorte, Frances and Padthaway with the three key elements to building resilience gratitude, mindfulness and empathy.

The students heard stories and saw statistics on mental health in the 90 minute presentation. “With 1 in 4 adolescents having a mental illness in today’s society and 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys suffering from an anxiety disorder, the need for guidance and direction is essential,” Martin said. “Alarmingly in today’s society 65% of adolescents do not seek help for mental illness so we

must be proactive in making a difference to our youth.”

Martin spent a considerable amount of time growing up with his family in Borneo and was educated in different parts of South East Asia. “I am passionate about children being given the opportunity to be raised in a positive manner that evokes confidence and a zest for life,” Martin said.

Naracoorte High School principal Kym Grant said the positive message presented on the day left those students who attended with an optimistic feeling.

“The feedback from teachers and students was excellent,” Mr Grant said.

“Mental wellness is a huge issue and The Resilience Project was an excellent proactive strategy to support these students so that they can learn the best techniques to cope.”

A LOVE STORY A DECADE IN THE MAKING

It was a love story that started in 2007 and was basically a case of once they met they were never apart again.

That love story culminated on March 11 this year when Will MacDonald and Asha Bowd exchanged vows at Port MacDonnell’s Customs House in front of family and friends, celebrating into the night at the Commodore on the Park.

It was on the night the couple was set to celebrate eight years together that Will proposed at home. Who knows what Will had planned but it was a stormy night and the power shut down in Port MacDonnell, so no doubt that added to the romantic lighting, at the very least. The happy duo then headed to Mount Gambier to celebrate over dinner and the planning began.

Central to the wedding day celebrations were the couple’s three children – Kia, Jagger and Nixon. When a couple has been together basically a decade when they tie the knot, it makes for a large bridal party.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT GRANT TO COMMEMORATE SERVICEMEN Member for Barker Tony Pasin has announced that the Plaques in the National Servicemen’s Park will be replaced thanks to an Australian Government grant to honour the service and sacrifice of local servicemen and women.

Mr Pasin said the National Servicemen’s Association of South Australia – South East Branch would receive $4000 as part of the Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service grants program to replace the plaques that had been vandalised.

“It is very disappointing that these plaques were vandalised in the first place,” Mr Pasin said.

“Unfortunately the vandalism shows a complete lack of respect for those who have served in defence of our nation and our freedoms.

“I’m pleased that the Federal Government could providing the funding to see these plaques replaced so that these men and women can be honoured for the service and sacrifice they made for us.”

The Saluting Their Service Community Commemorative Grants program provides up to $4000 for an individual project and is a rolling grants program, so applications are accepted at any time.

Local community organisations interested in applying for funding under the Saluting Their Service grants program should contact the Department of Veterans’ Affairs’ Commemorative Grants team on 1800 026 185 or email commemorativegrants@dva.gov.au.

SPORTING NEEDS

The Limestone Coast based textile art group Twisted Threads is set to hold its annual exhibition at the Mount Gambier Library from May 4-7. It makes for a jam packed cultural weekend with Generations in Jazz, also in Mount Gambier, and the Robe Chinese Festival on May 6 & 7. The exhibition, which is called Autumn Threads is also well timed for Mother’s Day with an array of the works available for sale. Autumn Threads will contain a wide range of textile techniques and showcases the great local talent. From cosy beanies to snugly scarves, from bold berets to gorgeous gloves, these works of art make for the perfect gift as winter approaches. Shawls and headbands will also be part of the exhibition. Handcrafted bags, brooches, pincushions and bookmarks will also be on offer. The exhibition also doubles as a fundraiser for the library with a raffle, made possible by the generosity of local businesses running over the four day exhibition. “This is our (Twisted Threads) way of thanking the wonderful staff and volunteers at the library and to give back to our community,” group member Julianne Woodruff said. The exhibition will open on Thursday, May 4, at 11am and will run during library opening hours from May 5-7. Saturday will see the library precinct a hive of activity with the regular Farmers Market also showcasing local produce. Twisted Threads was formed more than six years ago and meet weekly on a Wednesday morning to work on individual and group projects and focussing on the three Cs – creativity, coffee and conversation.

LOCAL SPORT PIONEERS REMAIN UNDEFEATED When you’re heading into a tough contest, you want your leaders to stand tall and on Friday night at the Icehouse, 2017 skipper Tom Daly and star import Daniel Alexander did just that for the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers in the opening quarter against the Dandenong Rangers.

It was an arm wrestle early with limited scoring from both sides but in the end, eight points from Daly, as well as a couple of well executed assists, while Alexander pulled in four rebounds and with a flurry late in the quarter ended up with eight points.

The home side led by four at the first change, and twice in the quarter extended that to double digits – Alexander sinking an easy layup with just under four minutes to play to make it a 10 point game and a minute later, after Dandenong had trimmed that lea again, Luke Jamieson hit a rare shot from beyond the arc and it was a game high 11 points before the Rangers again rallied to keep in touch and trail by only seven at the main break.

The third was another seesawing contest where the Rangers got as close as three points but were never able to get their noses in front, while the Pioneers just couldn’t put a gap between them and the visitors. Daly was again prominent with another eight point quarter, as the Pioneers headed into the final quarter with a six point lead.

In the last, the game continued to follow the script – the Rangers would challenge but the Pioneers always had an answer and the lead never got bigger than eight but was never closer than three as the home side willed themselves to victory.

And again it was players known for performing when it counts that came to the fore. When the Rangers got it back to three with 1.45 to play, Brad Hill showed nerves of steel and drained a three and Alexander, who finished the final quarter with three rebounds, a block and 11 points, stamped his authority on the contest with the only dunk for the game to restore a five point lead with less than a minute on the clock.

Given the Pioneers also had a road trip to Ballarat at the weekend, starting with a gritty win set the tone for the weekend. In the final wash up the Rangers were left to ponder what might have been, having put up 23 more shots than the Pioneers but only finishing at 37 percent from the floor.

The Pioneers clearly had no desire to caught up in another nailbiting contest when they headed to Ballarat to take on the Miners Saturday night and they came out of the blocks with a stunning opening quarter that saw them 19 points clear.

Five different Pioneers found the mark from three point territory – Daly, Alexander, Luke Jamieson, Matt Sutton and basically on the quarter time buzzer – Kane de Wit. Again it was Daly and Alexander doing the damage both finishing the quarter with nine points. Ballarat did respond though and worked their way back to a 10 point half time deficit.

But the Pioneers again looked the better side in the third and with a quarter to play, the margin was 17. Ballarat did win the last quarter but in reality the damage was done in that stunning opening term and the Pioneers remain second on the East Conference standing just behind Nunawading, the Spectres are also undefeated.

The 52nd Lucindale Tennis Tournament was again another great success. With Easter Tennis tournaments being held Australia wide, Lucindale proved again to be a popular choice for players with more than 200 entries.

Jason Parsons, of Port Augusta, was the most successful player of the weekend, taking out the trifecta in the Men’s B Grade, winning the Mixed, Singles and Men’s doubles. Andrew Van Den Hurk, of Mount Gambier, was also a huge talking point after winning the A Grade Singles in his 15th successive visit to the grass court complex.

Day One, sponsored by Mini Jumbuck, was the Junior Singles and Mixed Doubles. Mixed A Grade Doubles Winners were Adam Fonfe and Jodi White and runners up were Travis Roach and Claire Pickering.

Mixed B Grade Double Winners were Leanne McCarthy and Jason Parsons, with runners up Sam Mosley and Therese Musolino. Paul and Kerry Griffin won the Veterans Mixed Doubles, with runners up Paul and Maureen Dugmore. The Junior Singles saw some up and coming talent coming up trumps, with Sid Malone winning the Boys 11 and under Singles, with runner up Joe Thompson, Boys 13 and under Singles was won by Liam Menz with Ben Green runner up. Riley Burn won the Boys 15 and under Singles, with runner George White. The Girls 15 and under singles was won by Macaela Higgins with Jordyn Dugmore runner up. Day Two saw the Men’s and Ladies Singles and Junior Doubles. Again some talent shone in the up and coming juniors. Girls 11 and under Doubles was won

LOCAL SPORT BULLDOGS FINAL QUARTER SURGE SECURES WIN East Gambier opened its season with a win but it was a hard fought contest and West Gambier was left to ponder what might have been after leading the 2016 grand finalists by four goals at the final change, only to see the Bulldogs score the first five goals and eventually hold on for a two goal victory. The first quarter went to script with East playing with precision in offence and applying a ton of pressure defensively and while West had their patches of brilliance at both ends of the court, East enjoyed a five goal quarter time buffer. Sarah Lock and Tenille Gray shared the shooting responsibilities in the opening quarter, while at the other end, Brenna McKay was denying influential Roos coach Lisa McGregor possession in dangerous areas and she also dominated the air, rebounding the missed shots and turning offence into defence. But West, who hit the court without experienced campaigner Carly Trevilyan, was unfazed by their slightly slow start and they responded at both ends. They won the quarter by three to reduce the deficit to two by the main break and had they been more accurate at the post, they could well have enjoyed the lead. East converted 10 from 15, while West hit 13 from 23 as McGregor and Tahlia Earl started to find some good space, despite the tight marking from McKay and Bo Creek. Both defensive duos were placing strong pressure over the shot and it was producing some inaccuracy in the finishing. Part of West’s resurgence in the second quarter was the work of Carlee Davey. She started

to find the top and the pockets with ease and then used her usual patience to deliver the ball to the best shooting option. Davey’s ability to find space was even better in the third as the Roos started to take control.

Experience defensive duo Amy Cram and Nicole Butler started to earn some turnover ball with their ability to read the play and their smarts in lulling East into a false sense of security before pouncing on some ill advised feeds. The offence was also at its best with Davey and Olivia McEvoy finding good connection with McGregor and Earl, with McGregor playing her usual role of on court general, doing a mountain of work outside the circle to set up play before dominating on the shot, netting 10 from 11 as West worked its way to a four goal three quarter time lead. It was East’s lowest scoring quarter for the match, scoring only eight, as Cram and Butler denied the usually slick Bulldogs front line any time or space, and A Grade debutante Hannah Witherow was not letting Tarsh McCallum have it her own way – the youngster more than holding her own and also becoming a key offensive player as the Roos brought the ball through the mid court. Again the Roos enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in this quarter and some improved accuracy from Earl, who showed her usual strength on the hold and glorious timing on the lead, will see West challenge plenty of opposition line-ups. At the final change, West’s three experienced campaigners, McGregor, Cram, and Butler talked about treasuring possession and remaining calm but the Bulldogs had other ideas and came out firing. McCallum moved into centre and Lauren Pike made her A Grade debut on the attacking wing and Gray, who had been steady without being outstanding, stepped it up at least a couple of notches and almost singlehandedly ripped the game from West’s grasp.

Gray started to present strongly and she shot the first four of the quarter to level scores, before Lock ensured East wrested back the lead before the Roos had even scored. Pike showed superb composure in the heat of the goal for goal battle and her sure hands and unwillingness to cough up possession saw Cram and Butler unable to conjure the turnovers they had in the second and third quarters. McCallum also enjoyed more space with the move to the middle and with McKay rebounding every missed shot, East was able to maintain a three goal buffer for much of the quarter before West had a couple of surges but fell two goals shy. Gray converted 11 from 14 and was at her athletic best, finding space behind Cram and Butler as they looked to press up high, hunting turnover ball and it was her most accurate and productive shooting

quarter. East would be aware they got out of jail, with new co-coaches McCallum and Lock no doubt pleased the girls were able to dig in and secure the premiership points. The third debutante in this match, East’s Tyne Bosko, who started the contest in centre, also acquitted herself well. She drove strongly and had an impact defensively and she will only be better for her first run in A Grade company, while Bo Creek looked to relish her return to goal keeper. Lock was her usual creative self, while McKay and Gray were the most consistent performers, showing they can lift their game when required and they were instrumental in the final quarter fight back. West would be disappointed to let that win slip away but defensively they put on good pressure and Trevilyan’s return will only strengthen that relentless pressure, while on offence, Davey looked back to her best and McGregor has lost nothing from her 2016 best & fairest winning season. The Roos have endured a tough pre-season and have every intention of being contenders and round one suggested they will be. Millicent sounded a warning with a 49 goal win over Casterton Sandford, while North and South faced off on ANZAC Day. Left - Tenille Gray had a stunning final quarter to lead her side to victory.
