CHAMPIONSHIP SKIPPER MARKS 200 GAME MILESTONE Matt Sutton remembers when he first picked up a basketball – he just doesn’t really remember why. “When I was seven I just started shooting hoops at lunch time with some friends and there was no apparent reason why we started doing that,” Matt said. “I told my dad how much I loved shooting hoops and within about two weeks I was in a team.” But, for the man who last weekend became the fifth Mount Gambier Pioneer to clock up 200 games for the Icehouse based club, even that first step to join a team was far from smooth. “My local club (Forestville) actually didn’t have any room for me so dad took me to the local Latvian club, the Adelaide Giants, and that’s where I got my start,” Matt said. And despite his passion for the sport, he remembers he was scared of the ball and often ran in the opposite direction. “I wasn’t very good,” Matt said. “But for whatever reason I stuck at it.” And the Latvian connection has gone a full circle – Matt started with a Latvian club and most recently played alongside Lukass Blicavs at the Pioneers, a player with Latvian background. When it comes to heroes, it was hard to go past Michael Jordan, but for Matt it was also basically any Adelaide 36er – the NBL club where he was eventually able to get his big break. Matt remembers his first 36er game as a youngster, when the South Australian based club called Apollo Stadium home. “I was so young I had actually gone to bed and then dad woke me up to take me to the game,” Matt said. He remembers to loud atmosphere of the more boutique sized stadium.”It was the best experience and it came down to a shot on the buzzer,” Matt said. The 36ers hit the shot but it was deemed after the siren and the home side had to settle for a loss. “When they said the shot didn’t count the crowd went bananas. I will never forget the loud chant of ‘no’ – it was the loudest chant I have ever heard in my life.” And also memorable was meeting some of those players when he, himself, was a 36er. “You used to sometimes see those great players from the past around the stadium,” Matt said. “It made me really appreciate the history of the game or of any club you are a part of. You have to show proper respect to the great players of the past what have given so much to a club.” After his 50 games with the Adelaide 36ers over the 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons, which included fighting his way into the starting five on six occasions and finishing his time in the NBL on a high with a 17 point game that included five from six three pointers, Matt was looking for a change and the

perfect opportunity came when he was lured to the Mount Gambier Pioneers by coach Andrew Summerville for the 2010 season.”I was ready for a life change,” Matt said. He also admits he wasn’t really sure how the move would work out or how long he would stay. That question perhaps has been answered now, though. He is in his eighth season as a Pioneer, captained the club to four conference titles and two SEABL national titles, has forged an off court career as the basketball development officer in Mount Gambier and has even bought a home. “It’s always easy to say you stay somewhere because of the people and that’s certainly true but it was not just a basketball decision,” Matt said. “I was also able to find some really good work opportunities and that’s important too because I could see I could set myself up once I stop playing.” Matt identified 2012 as the turning point for the Pioneers when the arrival of players like Tom Daly and Ben Allen brought a professionalism to the group and along with coach Richard Hill, the club finally had somewhat of an epiphany about what it takes to be successful. “Success takes hard work and a lot of it.” Matt thinks that’s when it became obvious what had to be done in terms of really putting in the hard yards. With the hard work came confidence and then came what can be so

elusive in team sport – the right chemistry. “I think at the really elite level like the NBA you don’t have to all get along and be mates but I think in the SEABL that can be really important and the group that had that success are really close, we’re good mates,” Matt said. “Plenty of players could have left for more money or opportunities at another club but I think it’s our bond that has seen us stick together.” Matt identified the 2013 South Conference title as a turning point for the club, despite the disappointment of not clinching the national title. “That was a big step for us and pretty exciting,” he said. “But I guess it was 2014 that was pretty special.” That was when the club went one better and claimed the national title, going back to back in 2015 and runner up again last season. They are gunning for a fifth consecutive conference title this season, despite now being in the East Conference. “I can say that 2013 and ’14 are probably the two years that are most special to me and we had a lot of fun on and off the court,” Matt said. “I had never experienced such a close knit team before.” In 2017, the championship captain handed the reins to Tom Daly and he has been having his impact from the bench. “You always want to play and have an impact,” Matt said. “When you don’t get that opportunity you can second guess yourself but everyone goes

WHAT THE COACH SAID: “It was really interesting when I moved here as I was flying blind. I knew Matt (Sutton) and Eze (Erik Burdon) reasonably well and I spoke to them about leadership. Eze was adamant – ‘Sutts is your man’. And that made my decision about appointing him captain a bit of a no brainer because I trusted Eze. Some people have that natural tendency and Suttsy has that. He might not have the captaincy in terms of a title anymore but he is the same leader. Within our group he’s always been the organiser and he still is.

through it at some time and you just have to work harder and make sure you have an impact when you get out there.” He realises he is now that player that people look up to and he has settled more comfortable into his mentoring role of the young locals being given opportunities as part of the Pioneers program in the past couple of years. “I used to think tough love was the best but I realise having a bunch of senior guys scream at them won’t make them stick around or develop them,” Matt said. “You want them to enjoy it out there and connect with them and support them.” And when he looks back, he realises he got that from a number of coaches that remain front of his mind. Peter Stradz was his under 12 coach at the Adelaide Giants. “Whatever he did, it made you want to play basketball,” Matt said. “He was phenomenal at maintaining fun.” And when he final ended up at Forestville, it was Jerry Coombe that had a huge impact. “He was definitely responsible for my development as a player.” His first senior coach, also at Forestville, was Shaun Ryan. “That’s when I went from being a junior that was good but not much better than OK, to a successful player who could eventually play NBL.” Now he is in rare air at the Pioneers – only the fifth player to reach the 200 game mark – joining Jason Joynes, Jason Sedlock, Dallas Jeffree and Kurt Russell. “I think there’ll be some local names added to that list over time with all the young talent that is coming through now,” Matt said. Fitness guru Duncan Kirk and trainer Deb Bowman are two people from off the court hat have really impacted Matt during his tenure at the Pioneers. “They are fantastic people that have been there for a long time and when I had no family or friends they were a really good support for me,” he said. And then there’s Erik Burdon – the man he has shared so many career highlights with, including having lockers side by side at the 36ers. “We weren’t that close at the 36ers but since coming here we have developed a really close friendship,” Matt said. Salted caramel sesame cacao bites 500g medjool dates, pitted, chopped 75g (1/4 cup) hulled tahini 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 55g (1/3 cup) sesame seeds, toasted

Sea salt, extra, to sprinkle CACAO DIP 35g (1/3 cup) raw cacao powder 75g (1/3 cup) solidified coconut oil 60ml (1/4 cup) maple syrup

Method Grease base and sides of a 21 x 9cm (base measurement) loaf pan and line with baking paper, allowing sides to overhang. Process dates in a food processor until finely chopped. Add tahini, oil and salt. Process until well combined and smooth. Transfer to a bowl. Stir in sesame seeds. Spoon into prepared pan. Smooth surface. Place in fridge for 4 hours or until firm. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Remove sesame mixture from pan. Use a hot, dry knife to cut into squares. Place on a prepared tray and place in fridge. For cacao dip, place all ingredients in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Cook, stirring, until melted and smooth. Remove from heat. Set aside for 2 minutes to cool slightly. Use 2 forks to turn caramels in cacao dip to coat. Drain off excess. Return to prepared tray. Place in fridge for 10 minutes or until set. Repeat with remaining cacao dip (reheating if necessary) to double coat, placing on remaining prepared tray. Leave until almost set. Sprinkle with a little extra salt. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes. Store in a lined, airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.

INDIGENOUS EDUCATION IN THE SPOTLIGHT Jess Magarey is an Aboriginal education teacher at Reidy Park Primary School and she was pleasantly surprised when a leading indigenous mentor chose Reidy Park for a visit and video shoot – the school had recently become an ambassador of indigenous success. Jack Manning Bancroft (pictured) established Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) in 2005 as a 19 year old and Jess was thrilled he wanted to bring his program to the Limestone Coast. “AIME said Jack wants to come out and film a video,” Jess said. “He wanted to go somewhere left of centre and somewhere in a regional area and he chose Mount Gambier.” AIME provides mentors for a fairer world through a dynamic education program. Jack founded the program when he was in university – he was sick of the divide between Indigenous Australians and non Indigenous Australians and wanted to see a change. He convinced a group of fellow students, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to begin working with 20 Indigenous students as mentors at Alexandria Park community school in Redfern and the rest, as they say, is history. Since then AIME has worked with more than 10,000 Indigenous students and indigenous students in the AIME program have managed to finish high school at the same rate as their peers effectively closing the educational gap. Reidy Park can now claim to be part

of the AIME story, with Jack’s May visit exploring the weird and wild subject of dreams with some of the junior primary students. “I think the visit had a huge impact on our school community and especially for our indigenous students,” Jess said. “I feel like now we have started something at Reidy Park that will flow through into the community. Jack’s visit has inspired people to talk about indigenous education.” And for someone in a role like Jess, that is great news. She is responsible for making sure the staff is all up to speed with teaching the indigenous perspective and she also plans the school’s cultural celebrations which include NAIDOC Week and Reconciliation Week. “I also make sure our indigenous kids are getting to school and monitor their

general well being,” said Jess, who is in the role for a third year. “If a school ahs 10 indigenous kids it qualifies for an Aboriginal education teacher and the more students the more time that teacher gets to do the job,” she said. Jess is thrilled Jack’s visit, to launch his book and shoot a video, has put indigenous education in the spotlight. “Sometime you need something a bit magical to get things started and that what AIME has done with this visit,” she said. “AIME shows kids what’s possible and teaches them to believe that they can do anything and that with hard work they can and will be successful,” Jess said. COMMUNITY SUPPORT THE KEY TO SUCCESS Amanda Flint is a relative newcomer to the region but it hasn’t taken long for the Penola farmer and administration manager to take a shine to the Swinging With The Stars. She had seen the fundraising efforts of the two previous Penola based participants and was really keen to be involved. “It was on my bucket list,” Amanda said. “I just knew it was something I would love to do.” Amanda is one of the class of 2017 that does have some dancing experience. “I did some dancing when I was younger,” Amanda said. “I used to get together with my friends and we made dances up and I did some cheerleading.” She currently teaches a fun class in Penola for kids aged 3-12. “We concentrate on team work, movement and things like that,” Amanda said. “It is more of a community based thing – there are no concerts and no sequins. It’s about the kids coming together and to learn something new and it gives them another option if they are not a netballer or footballer or if they’re too young for that.” Like many of her fellow stars, Amanda knew it would be tough but it has been even tougher than she anticipated. “It’s challenging, just the speed at which is happens,” she said. “You are learning a whole routine in two hours.” It has seen Amanda doing plenty of rehearsing at home and her three young daughters and her husband, Daniel, know the routines well. “They are helping me practice,” Amanda said. She is fundraising for the Penola Coonawarra Well being Fund and in March she held a Movie and Music at The Track function at the Penola Racecourse – as 12noon to 12 midnight function that surpassed Amanda’s expectations in terms of funds raised. There was live music from the likes of Mount Gambier’s Ben Hood and Bordertown’s Clarissa Lehmann, 15 market stalls, kids entertainment and an appearance from George The Farmer. It was her first fundraiser for the Swinging With The Stars campaign and she actually topped what she had set herself for the entire three months leading into the June 24 event. “I am so lucky to be part of such a supportive community,” Amanda said. She is also being given the proceeds from the two Stand Like Stone Foundation movie nights held in Penola and she has been running raffles. “I was lucky enough to be gifted a lot of goods from Penola businesses and I have been able to use that to raise money,” she said. Amanda has also teamed up with fellow competitors Nicole Hocking and Jack Kelly for extra rehearsals in her studio space and as for the costumes, she has a day planned with friends to

get all those sequins and beads in place. “I don’t really feel nervous about it right now but the closer we get and the more people talk about it, you do start to feel the nerves,” Amanda said. “I imagine but the time we have the dress rehearsal and there’s only a week to go I will start to get nervous.” Amanda is partnered with Jordan Brennan for the 2017 event. “He’s wonderful, been an amazing

For more than 40 years Rostrum Voice of Youth has been Australia’s premier public speaking competition for secondary students. The Mount Gambier & District Community Bank® Branch has sponsored this event since 2012 as part of their community investment grants program. There were 23 students competing from secondary schools in the South East this year and a very high standard of speakers. The Metropolitan Male Choir of SA is set to make a whirlwind visit to the Limestone Coast with concerts in Naracoorte and Millicent in June. The visit is an initiative of the Naracoorte Singers and Millicent Choral Society and the concerts will feature support acts. The choir will perform men’s chorus favourites along with tunes from Broadway, hymns, classical, jazz and pop standards. The Naracoorte concert it at the town hall on Saturday, June 17, at 7.30pm, and the Millicent convert will be at the Civic & Arts Centre, at 2pm, on Sunday, June 18. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 concession. That launch also including son Matt James, the talent behind the album’s title track, and rising star Jordana Jones. “Matt has been writing songs and he said I could have Walk in Circles,” Sandra said. “As soon as I heard it I knew I needed to have an album made around this song.” This album signals somewhat of a changing of the guard as Sandra debuts Matt’s song. “It is going to become my main focus for the next few years to help him,” the proud mum said. “He has had somewhat of a head start into the industry – he has been in it with me since he was a baby. It captures a young man separated from his girlfriend and only getting to visit

every couple of weeks and how sad he feels every time he has to drive away. The song confirms everything Sandra believes about her son. “He’s a great song writer, a great guitar player and a great singer – he’s the full package on his own.” But she knows it’s a tough business and takes more than talent. “If it wasn’t for people doing that for me I wouldn’t have achieved what I have.” But she will of course be pushing her latest album and performing Matt’s title track and the 11 other Sandra Humphries’ gems to continue to reward her loyal fans. SALEYARDS BREAK $12 MILLION IN SALES It’s been a tough year for livestock markets with stock supply affecting the region’s sales but the Casterton Saleyards continues to thrive, passing the $12million dollar mark this financial year. Sales last August and this April were cancelled because of the stock supply issues but the Casterton facility has still hosted six sales this year and is averaging more than two million per selling day. Another sale is also scheduled for next month with national buyers already expressing interest. The recent figures bode well for the facility which also topped $12million last financial year but that was across nine sales. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the yards continued to be a hub of economic activity for the shire, attracting some of the region’s best per kilogram sale figures. “These regular sales continue to attract a high quality of stock which attracts buyer interest from across Victoria and interstate and it is clear to see the facility is on track to break last year’s selling figures,” Cr Rank said.“Every sale day you see a convoy of utes arrive into town, with these producers staying on to buy goods and products from local retailers and supporting our broader economy. The facility has a strong role to play

in our shire economy and our social fabric. These saleyards have undergone significant investment in recent years to improve their useability and appeal to sellers and it is clear to see from recent selling figures that the outcomes have been worthwhile.” The continued success of the facility is underpinned by several major works that have been undertaken at the site this financial year including the renewal of water lifestyle1.net | 26

After recording her past couple of albums in the heartland of country music – Nashville – Mount Gambier based Sandra Humphries returned to home shores for her sixth studio album Walk in Circles. And this album was a back to the future style project with Sandra fulfilling a lifelong wish to record an album with respected producer Stuart French. “I’ve been friends with Stuart since my first album, which he played on, and I always said I love to record with him,” Sandra said. “He really gets it, he’s got a really good vibe for country and for where I’m at. He respects me and what I do.” And by her own admission this album is selfish. “I just wanted to make an album that I thought described me as an artist,” she said. “It has a half and half feel. Half I’ve written and half the songs I think define me as an artist. If you listen to the album there is Sandra Humphries heartbreak songs; happy tongue in cheek songs and a rock feel as well because I like it all.” Recording is as a

EXTRA REHEARSALS MIGHT NOT BE ENOUGH Peter Zeitz has faced his share of challenges in life. He was a police officer, ran Periwinkles Cafe with wife Jane, at Port MacDonnell for 15 years, and is now working in the social services sector but getting himself up to speed for the 2017 Swinging With The Stars event on June 24 has been arguably the biggest. With no dance background, the selfconfessed oldest competitor in the field has been adding as many rehearsals as possible to brush up his skills. “I’ll give a lot of people something to laugh at,” Peter said. “It’s not about winning even though I know it’s a competition, I just want to participate and have a bit of fun.” Hurting his back two weeks ago during an ill advised spin move was a small setback and a reminder about how tough learning to dance can be. “I am sure my partner (Rebecca Hann) has never been set such a difficult task,” Peter said. “She’s a star and she has her work cut out for her.” Aside from the back injury there has been some other collateral damage as well. “I have been practising a lot by myself at home as well and I took out a chandelier,” he said. Peter can often be spotted out practising his dance moves while out walking. “For me it is just about repeat, repeat, repeat,” Peter said. He had been approached a few times before to be part of the Stand Like Stone fundraiser but running a hospitality business made time to rehearse next to impossible.

“But now I have that time I believe Stand Like Stone is a worthwhile charity,” he said. “And I think it’s always good to challenge yourself I didn’t realise it was going to be this challenging though. I’m out of my depth.” Fundraising is going to be Peter’s focus and on June 2 he has a function at Jens Hotel from 5.30pm. CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

TYRES Newbery Park Primary School might be a relative newcomer on the block but when you combine its early history as Millicent South Primary, the school has a rich history in education in the region and is celebrating its 50th anniversary this October. The main celebrations will take place on Friday, October 27, and Saturday, October 28, with a range of activities and commemorations. At the school’s 25th anniversary celebrations the current students and staff made the symbolic journey from the old school to the new facility and the 50th celebrations will replicate that as part of the Friday program.

A whole school assembly and cake cutting ceremony will follow the walk and then the classrooms will become a showcase of what education looks like in 2017 and the learning environment being nurtured and developed at Newbery Park Primary School. Saturday will be all about a trip down memory lane as the school displays old photographs and other memorabilia and past students, staff and the community can wander through and see how the past 50 years have evolved. Organising committee member Jess Willmott said they were hoping plenty of people from away would return to celebrate the milestone. “It will be a great chance for people to renew old acquaintances,” Jess said. “We are also hoping people from the community will be willing to hand over any of their memorabilia for the school displays.” There will also be plenty

of activities for the kids, with a raft of old fashioned schoolyard games being resurrected, and there will be catering on site. “We are trying to make it a big of a family day,” Jess said. A time capsule will also be buried, with students at the school now having a peek inside the 25th anniversary capsule and then adding their own mementos to head back underground and preserve for future generations. There is also a formal dinner planned for the Saturday night at the Millicent Community Club with tickets already on sale for the anniversary dinner. The school has set up a 50th anniversary facebook page in a bid to start getting the word out and track people down as the celebrations continue to take shape. Method Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Season chicken. Cook for 3 minutes each side or until browned. Transfer to a plate. Add the mushroom and garlic to the frying pan. Stir for 3 minutes or until mushroom softens. Add the tomato paste and stir for 1 minute or until combined. Stir in the brandy. Add the wine and simmer for 1 minute. Stir in the tomato and oregano. Reduce heat to medium-low. Add the chicken and simmer, stirring often, for 15 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. Meanwhile, heat a chargrill on high. Spray with oil. Cook the bread and prawns, turning halfway, for 3 minutes or until cooked through. GETTING YOUR HOUSE WINTER READY

Recent weather would suggest winter has arrived early but perhaps you still have time to get a few siple jobs done around the house ready for the cold, wet weather. SPORT MOUNT GAMBIER DOMINATES STATE SCHOOLBOYS TEAM Six South East based baseballers were part of the 2017 Secondary School Sport SA State baseball team that recently competed in Cairns. The team did not enjoy great success but each of the boys enjoyed the experience, ranging from some representing the State for this first time through to Tom Rundle, who is a seasoned State representative and all have desire to take their baseball even further. Scott Gladstone, who is no longer in the region was a huge influence over all six boys in their baseball development and locally based Joe and Ben Atkins also played a huge role. They were entrusted to train the boys in Mount Gambier – a godsend to parents, who then only had to commit to a couple of compulsory trainings in the lead up to the Cairns championships. Brock Keding, Ethan Chuck and Branden Telford are also headed to Geelong on the June Long Weekend as part of the Mount Gambier Baseball League division one representative team.

BROCK KEDING Brock has been playing baseball since he was eight and for the Central Baseball Club player it was his first time representing South Australia. “It was heaps of fun,” Brock said. “It was a really good experience and I’ve already made a few good friends.” Playing mainly catcher and outfield, Brock believes the fact he has played division one baseball locally helped him adjust to the higher standard of play at a national championships. “It is probably the same level as that (division one) and it showed me I need to get a bit stronger,” Brock said. But the 15 year old has time to do that as he sets his sights on South Australian Under 16 selection at the end of September. Brock is also developing his game by suiting up for Kensington, in Adelaide, every second week during baseball season. Brock is already grateful for the work Scott Gladstone did to develop his hitting. “When he was helping me I saw a massive improvement.” Also giving the Tension Woods College every advantage is Brock’s place in the school’s High Performance Program.

KOBY CHANT Koby Chant was six years old when he first started playing baseball and the 15 year old’s selection in the 2017 Secondary School Sport SA State baseball team was his first State experience. A Central player in the local competition, Koby is a versatile player who has played pitcher, catcher and first and third base, spending his time in State colours as a first base and occasional pitcher. “A few of my friends from footy were playing baseball in the summer and that’s why I took it up in the first place,” Koby said. “Cricket takes too long.” And it soon became a passion and he has advanced his way through the ranks to also be playing division one games in the 2016/17 season. “Playing State was definitely a higher level I hadn’t really experience before,” Koby said. But he has caught the bug and the Tenison Woods College High Performance Program student will be trying his luck at State trials again later this year. (Also pictuerd in action above left)

ETHAN CHUCK Another Tenison Woods College alumni, Ethan Chuck, also took up baseball as an eight year old and Central is his home club. For Ethan, the Cairns championships were his State debut but he, too, has his sights set on trialling for the Under 16 team later this year and is part of the school’s High Performance Program. He has dipped his toe in the Adelaide based competition with West Torrens and is looking to extend that commitment when the next season rolls around and he also believed playing division one baseball locally has developed his game at a faster rate than playing only juniors. “I really enjoyed going away with the State team and playing at a higher level,” Ethan said. He played outfield, second base and pitcher and he owed his brother Josh a debt of gratitude for helping him train. “I do pitch to Josh, who is a catcher, to practise my pitching,” Ethan said. Father Roger also has played a hand when required.

TOM RUNDLE Tom Rundle was the veteran of the group in terms of experience, having played State Schoolboys on two previous occasions as well as Under 16 and Under 18 for South Australia. Not surprisingly he has his sights set on trialling for the Under 18 team again later this year. A Federal player locally, and part of the premiership winning division one team from the 2016/17 season, Tom basically plays first base at State level but is also a strong catcher. Attending his fifth national championships, the 16 year old was able to comment on the quality of the action. “It was one of the better standard national schoolboys championships I have been a part of,” he said. Tom plays most of his domestic baseball in Adelaide for Kensington where he plays Under 17 and division two, although he has played one division one games in the State’s premier competition

BRANDEN TELFORD This was Branden Telford’s second stint in the Schoolboys State team and he’s certainly racked up the frequent flyer points, heading to Perth for last year’s championships and Cairns this year. The pitcher and first base plays his local baseball with Tigers, suiting up for Under 17, division two and division one. “Playing senior baseball definitely helped when we were away because we were used to facing stronger pitchers who put a fair bit of work on the ball,” Branden said. The 16 year old Mount Gambier High student also plays for Adelaide based club Kensington so he is certainly getting plenty of opportunities to develop his baseball. “I also worked a fair bit with Ben Atkins on my pitching,” Branden said. Branden will also be heading to State Under 18 trials later this year as he looks to continue to develop his baseball through playing at a higher level. And while South Australia did struggle at the recent championships, Branden secured a game MVP honour during the event.

LACHLAN JACKMAN-TILLEY Sixteen year old Lachlan Jackman-Tilley is another Tenison Woods College student taking advantage of the school’s High Performance program. He was a first time State player at the recent national championships and is a bit of a jack of all trades, playing pitcher, third base, short stop, second base and left field. Another of the talented Central players, Lachlan played Under 17 and division one and also plays for Adelaide based club West Torrens. He now has his sights set on selection in the Under 18 South Australian team with trials later this year. “I really loved the experience of playing State,” Lachlan said. “It was a great learning experience.” He focussed on pitching and second and third base when at the Cairns championships. TAKING AUSTRALIA TO THE WORLD It may not have the profile of Miss World or Miss Universe but Mount Gambier’s Marcia Hobbs is about to represent Australia at the World Finals of the Miss United Nations Pageant, in Jamaica, in July. It is a huge coup for the accomplished business woman, who runs the clothing and philanthropic company Barbwire Noose, and she can’t wait for the chance to showcase her talents and all Australia has to offer at the unique event. It is a pageant that still includes the traditional aspects of pageantry but also focuses on the community involvement of the participants and their qualities as ambassadors for their country and causes. “It is basically a leadership program involving people who want to be part of change in their community,” Marcia said. “It allows people to showcase what they have to offer beyond the external package.” And while Marcia has landed gigs like Clipsal and a variety of fashion shoots, her focus has more often than not been these more eclectic but inclusive pageants, also competing in the Miss Earth, environmental focussed pageant. “It was the Miss Earth and some of my charity work that got me an invitation to the United Nations Pageant,” she said. And while there will be 5am starts, exercise regimes and hair and beauty, the United Nations event will also see contestants spending time at an

It makes for a busy time for the Barbwire Noose owner, who is also finishing off an MBA with the view to finally taking up a position in law school – an opportunity she was afforded when she left school before she opted to start her own clothing company. “I also want to keep developing my company and down the track what I hope is someone else will run the clothing side and I will just focus on the charity side of the business,” Marcia said. She also has political aspirations and has extensive volunteering roles in the community and further afield. “I have been volunteering since I was 15,” Marcia said. “I believe being involved in your community is so important.” Locally Marcia is a Lifeline crisis caller and she also helps at Red Cross with the visitor program. She is also closely aligned to the World Wildlife Fund, Animals Australia, Bush Heritage, Kiss Goodbye to MS and is an ambassador for the World Kindness Movement. Greenpeace, Sea Shepherd and World Society of the Protection of Animals (WASP) are all supported by her business. Marcia will be in Jamaica from July 1-9 for the World Finals.

At a recentceremony at Wattle Range Council, in Millicent, Mayor Peter Gandolfi handed the keys of a Ford Territory over to the Regional Coordinator of the South East Region of the Red Cross, Greg Baxendale. Wattle Range Council has supported the community by providing the local Red Cross office with a car for community use, to assist those who need it to gain access to essential services. “The partnership between Wattle Range and the Red Cross has meant that members of the community can be driven by volunteers to appointments they may have found difficult to otherwise get to,” said Mr Gandolfi. The Red Cross community car program is coordinated by the Red Cross in Mount Gambier and supported by local volunteer drivers, who give up their time to take residents to appointments across the region, even linking up with specialist services in Adelaide. “Wattle Range Council has long been a supporter of this Red Cross program and is proud to be able to donate a vehicle to the local office to continue this essential service,” Mr Gandolfi said. NEW HOME FOR BUPA Bupa customers in Mount Gambier will have more convenient access to the health and care company with a new-look store now open at Gambier Central Shopping Centre. The store has relocated from its previous Commercial Street West site and its new design has been based around customer feedback. Entries are now open for the South East Art Society Open Art Awards. Artists will vie for a grand prize of $1500, with a Member’s Award; People’s Choice Award; Patron’s Trophy and Young Artists Awards in high school and primary school categories also up for grabs. HELPING OTHERS THROUGH THEIR PERSONAL STORIES A public event on June 9 is all about helping. Stepping Out of the Shadows into the Light is an informal evening where two local women will share their personal stories in a bid to help others work their way through their own loss and pain or feelings of unhappiness. By simply talking about their own journeys Di Chambers and Kathleen Donhardt will continue their own healing, hope they will spark a way forward and some coping strategies for others and the event will also help the Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service, with proceeds from the $9 a head function at Mount Gambier’s Commodore on the Park at 7pm. Di’s son Ryan went missing in India 12 years ago and Kathleen is set to open up for the first time publically about a family life filled with abuse and thoughts of suicide. How the two women teamed up is an intriguing story spanning a number of years. “Di was just a face to me at Curves and when Curves shut down she organised for Curves members to go to another gym,” Kathleen said. That’s when the duo started attending Active8 but they were still no more than faces in a weights or a cardio room. “One night in the gym Di happened to say to me how’s it going and mentioned the name Jon Gabriel,” Kathleen said. It was a short, innocuous conversation but the name Gabriel stayed with Kathleen and kept coming up and eventually it was the Gabriel Method, a holistic approach to weight-loss focussing on mind and body. “That was life changing for me and I followed that through,” Kathleen said. In fact it sees Kathleen now on a path where she is an eating psychologist and a life coach but all she wanted to do was acknowledge the impact, that random comment from a woman she didn’t know in the gym one night, had on her life. ”But I didn’t know her name and hadn’t seen her around town,” Kathleen said. Then in 2015 Kathleen saw an article on Di’s missing son Ryan and she realised it was the same woman. “I did some facebook stalking and sent her a message,” Kathleen said. “I just wanted to say thank you.” The plot thickened though with Di not seeing

the message. “But then I was doing a personal development course recently and part of challenging myself through that was doing facebook live,” Di said. That is when the two reconnected. Kathleen mentioned her message, Di was able to read it and the two have become firm friends, first united in helping each other and now focussed on helping others. “It was a beautiful message and very emotional,” Di said. “I’ve been wanting to have an impact on women for a long time and to find out I had an impact when I didn’t realise it was amazing.” It has all led to the June 9 event and while the public sharing of their personal stories is a one off, where it leads is boundless. In the days following the event the duo intends to be available for more intimate chats at coffee shops or other informal locations around town and then who knows. “People have the power within them to heal,” Di said. “We want to break down the barriers and say it’s OK to talk about what’s bothering you,” Kathleen said. “We want to create a space where that feels safe.” Both women admit it is a venture into the unknown but they encourage anyone, whether they are stuck in a rut at work or have more deep seated unhappiness to come along. They do not profess to have the answers but they can share what worked for them and that’s a great starting point, hearing how people who have suffered loss and pain worked their way back to healing and happiness. “We are just two ordinary, everyday people and we want people to realise that,” Di said. “I view life as a game. If you know the rules and develop the skills, it’s easier to play the game.” And that’s what Thursday, June 9, is all about. LOCAL SPORT BLUE LAKE Y SWIM CLUB WRAPS UP SUCCESSFUL SEASON

KNT FOOTBALL A GRADE

The annual presentations, along with the club AGM, were recently held for the Mount Gambier Swimming Club. Club president Maureen Crowe and coach Julie Moran reflected on a successful season for its members. Over the summer months, swimmers representing their schools in the Secondary Interschool Swimming Carnivals, their district in the in SAPSASA Swimming, their club at SA Country Swimming Championships and one swimmer even represented the State, being selected in the State SAPSASA swimming team that competed in Darwin. Swimmers have also attended meets in the South East Swimming Association (Mt Gambier, Penola, Bordertown and Keith) as well as just over the border in the South West Barwon District (Casterton, Hamilton, Warrnambool). This season the club introduced a Junior Dolphins swimming program for swimmers under the age of 10. This has enabled new members to join the club with heavily discounted membership fees. Swimmers as young as seven years of age have been offered free membership, subsequently increasing the number of members in the club by more than 30% A total of 55 medals were presented to swimmers in the club for impressive PBs (personal best times) over the season, a true reflection of their dedication and commitment to training sessions. Some swimmers recorded PBs with more than a 20 second improvement over the season. Life Membership was presented to Maureen Crowe, current president of the club, for her dedication and commitment to the club over the past 18 years.

Both Maureen and her husband John are both dedicated members of the club, who readily assist the club where needed, and the club reflected upon all of their valuable contributions. Parents of the club were also thanked for their valued contributions to the club over the past season as well. Trophies were presented to the following swimmers: Highest achiever award Elijah Stratford Most improved boys Vaughn Stratford (1st), Ethan Michielan (2nd), Elijah Stratford (3rd) Most improved girls Nikeisha Facey (1st), Caitlin Carraill (2nd), Indee Stratford (3rd) The Mount Gambier Swimming Club is currently training at Swimskool over the winter months and welcome any swimmers with the ability to swim more than 25m freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. PIES REMAIN UNDEFEATED Kalangadoo 18.10 (118) d Kongorong 5.11 (41) It was a highly anticipated top of the table clash but Kalangadoo had no intention of sharing the top billing and the Magpies dominated the Hawks to secure a 77 point victory. Kalangadoo replicated their fast start from last weekend and were never challenged. “I suppose for us it was around consistency,” coach Ben Mules said. “There’s no good building up one week and dropping off the next.” The coach is under no illusi0ons the challenges will come, perhaps as early as next week when they take on third ranked Hatherleigh but he cannot question the endeavour of his players at this point. “We’ve got a fair bit of trust in each other,” Mules said. “For us it is about continuing to work hard regardless of the scoreboard and that’s working for us at the moment.” He also conceded the scoreboard did Kongorong a disservice and that the contest for the ball was hard and perhaps the finishing off was the difference. “They have definitely improved and their depth is better,” Mules said. The return of Bronson Saffin has also clearly seen a lift in some of the younger players. “Players like that tend to lift others around them.” Mitch Lowe and Matthew Fatchen continued their outstanding form of 2017, while Dallas Jeffree was enormous down back. It was also a day out for goalsneak Michael Krieger who finished with eight. “He always makes the most of his opportunities and it was reward for effort for his forward pressure,” Mules said

GLENCOE TURNS THE CORNER Glencoe 14.9 (93) d Mt Burr 10.9 (69) Finally. That was the sentiment of Glencoe coach Zacc Cocks after his side finally conquered a higher ranked opponent and managed to play at the necessary level for more than a half. “We did run out of legs in the last quarter and they outscored us but we had still done enough,” Cocks said. “I think we just worked a bit harder and wanted it a bit more. I have been asking the boys to be hungrier and for this first three quarters we were.”The victory was built on the back of the usual suspects, Cocks, Clay Von Duve and Dylan Childs – the trio that has been leading the way in 2017 – but also on the back of the best game for the year by Bradley Mitchell. “The conditions really suited him,” Cocks said. The bets on ground performance included four goals. “The whole back six were fantastic as well,” Cocks said. Henry Crauford was clearly best for the vanquished Mossies and while others faded in and out of the contest, the youngster battled hard all day. “I am hoping that now we have got that win we’ll get the belief that we can beat sides that are above us on the ladder,” Cocks said. And with Tantanoola, Robe and Nangwarry in the next month, it looms as a season defining four weeks for the Murphies.

TIGERS TRIUMPH

Tantanoola 8.9 (57) d Robe 6.8 (44) Tantanoola has picked up its second win of the season with a tough 13 point victory over Robe. On the back of a five goal haul from best on ground Garrett Ha, the Tigers were able to rally after a slow start to overrun the Roosters in torrid conditions. The home side held a 19 point quarter time lead but after that point, Tantanoola outscored Robe seven goals to two to claim the premiership points. Coach Jack Kelly was the only multiple goal scorer for the Roosters, who were held scoreless in the last while the Tigers managed a match winning 2.4.

The scoreline reads a 15 goal win but for the first three quarter, Glencoe and Mt Burr were locked in a tense battle. With both sides finishing accurately on goal, there was only two goals the difference at the main break and it was only after a break from the court in the third quarter for lightning that the Murphies seemed to assert their authority. Some timely interceptions from Jenna Paproth started to swing momentum Glencoe’s way in the last and with Chantelle Weir and Ebony McDiarmid (pictured) finding good space and finishing accurately, the Murphies were able to win the final quarter by 10 and secure the win. It was a nailbiter all the way to the final whistle in the clash between Robe and Tantanoola with the Tigers claiming the points. The battle in the middle between classy competitors Kim Ross and Jess Bell was intriguing as both were the dominant feeders for their respective sides, while the move of Emma Gould from defence to goal attack had some impact for the Tigers in what was a scrappy game. In the remaining two matches, the results went as expected with Kalangadoo making light work of Kongorong by 48 goals, with Shauni Cunningham dominating the mid court, while Hatherleigh outclassed Nangwarry, who have had to reshape their side with the loss of Tammie Smith for the season., with the final margin at 36 goals.

A SCRAPPY AFFAIR BUT SUTTON’S 200TH IS MARKED WITH A WIN Pioneers 82 (D. Alexander 2; T. Daly 18; E. Burdon 16; B. Hill 11) d Kilsyth 66 For the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers, Friday night was all a case of the best laid plans going awry. All week preparation had surrounded stopping access to Kilsyth’s two tall timber weapons, all six foot 10 of them, but when they walked out onto the Icehouse pine, neither was anywhere to be seen. “We certainly weren’t prepared for that line-up,” coach Richard Hill said. “We had spent a lot of time preparing for those two and the difficulty we might have containing them.” So while there was some strategy on the fly, in what was a scrappy contest, the Pioneers did secure the points and moved to a 10-1 record at the top of the East Conference, with a 16 point win in championship skipper Matt Sutton’s 200th game. The Pioneers have made a habit of fast starts and in front of their home crowd that’s exactly what they got. “There were a lot of emotions but we certainly had a good start,” Hill said. “But we really didn’t play well or like we would want to.” That was an observation more

of the offence end of the court, with the coach not only pleased with his side’s defensive efforts but also impressed with what Kilsyth brought to the table. “Our defence was great,” Hill said. “Our offence was not great but it really hasn’t been what we’d like it to be all season. Credit to them, though, they defended us well and turned it into a scrappy game which we knew they would when they had the different line-up.” Save for a three minute period leading into half time and a similar period into the end of the match, where the Pioneers found their offensive mojo, it was a struggle but the coach can only keep working on getting things right on the training court. “It’s not a bad chemistry, it’s just making all the pieces fit together,” he said. “We might never get there but it won’t be through lack of trying. We’ve got lots of good offensive weapons but that doesn’t make a great offensive team.” The Pioneers led by 12 at the first break and then 11 at the half, before Kilsyth made a real tilt at the home side to bring it back to a four point game at the final change. But in the end, mainly courtesy of the late quarter

surge, the Pioneers secured a 16 point win. Daniel Alexander had another solid night with 21 points and 14 rebounds, while Erik Burdon was clearly keen to make it a night to remember for his milestone team mate, hitting four of six threes on his way to 16 points. Brad Hill chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds, while skipper Tom Daly was again prominent with 18 points. SAINTS CLAIM ANOTHER SCALP

The second half was delayed due to a lightning storm but nothing was going to faze the Saints, kicking 4-2 in tough conditions to secure the win. “It was definitely pleasing to beat North – the club hasn’t done that for quite a while,” coach Clint Gallio said. “Our belief in ourselves is growing. We knew we had the legs to run it out and we were well prepared for the tough battle.” The move of Dylan Bromley into the ruck helped turn the contest. “He definitely got us up and going,” Gallio said. What was also pleasing was it some young players standing up with Mitchell Gordon’s chasing and tackling up forward proving pivotal, as well as his two goals, while a three goal haul from Sam Willis, who had already played in Under 17s, was also crucial. Nick Blachut off half back and on the wing was still able to use the ball well in the tough conditions, for North, and the skills of Brad Close and Declan Carmody also were not diminished in the wet. Brett Kennedy was also influential in the ruck. Gallio said the boys were allowed to enjoy the win but also understood there was a new opponent to prepare for this week.

TEENAGE STAR HITS PREMIER LEAGUE COURT ROOS BREAKTHROUGH FOR VICTORY West Gambier 10.5 (65) d Casterton Sandford 7.14 (56) “It was a good result for us,” West coach Steve Wenman said, “We’ve been disappointing in the past couple of weeks so it was finally good to get a consistent effort and a win.” Interestingly the Roos went into the contest focussing on some individual and team goals rather than the winning. “One of those goals was to play four quarters of footy,” Wenman said. And for this first time this season, after a fortnight of bad fade outs, they did. And that was even with the young group having to adapt their game style once the wet and wild weather his at half time. “We spoke about Casterton Sandford being a contested and tough side,” Wenman said. “Beating them in that area was a real tick for the boys. They really cracked in and had a go which is why you get the result.” Wenman was conscious of the bigger bodied, more experienced heads through the Cats midfield but his young team, led by rising star midfielder Lawrence Bradley-Brown, held firm. Having Elliot King back for his first game of the season added some experience to the Roos midfield but Wenman said he could have named 15 best players. Quality Cat Dylan Ryan kicked the first goal of the last quarter, moving from half back to the forward line in the sense final quarter. “He started to look really damaging and we had to tighten the screws on him,” Wenman said. The coach now wants this win to be a springboard for consistency going forward. “We want to be competitive every week.” For the Cats, it was the third narrow victory in 2017.

EAST CONTINUES TO SET THE STANDARD East Gambier 15.10 (100) d South Gambier 9.7 (61) It was in the second quarter that East Gambier set up its 39 point victory over South Gambier. The Bulldogs added eight goals, albeit with the Demons adding six, but it set up a handy 21 point half time buffer that once the wild weather hit was invaluable. Despite the conditions being less than ideal for big men, it was Shem Balshaw, Mark Rumbelow and Jayden Eldridge, who is arguably in career best form, which did the damage for the home side. Matt Willson was also pivotal with his ability to win the ball and still use it wisely. Dylan Ridding put in his best performance in A Grade company for South, showing why he was so sorely missed last season, while Taylor Saffin and Nick Jenkin worked tirelessly to try and keep the Demons in touch.

Former Western Border junior Nyah Allen continues to make her mark in elite company, making her Premier League debut in round two of the season for Garville. After a half in Premier League Reserves the weekend before, the youngster started in the Premier League team due to player illness and she certainly made the most of her opportunity. She netted 41 of her side’s 55 goals, missing only two for the match and rebounding those misses anyway. Garville also notched its first win of the season in Premier League. Trailing by two going into the final quarter, Nyah certainly made her mark, converting 14 from 15 as Garville powered to a four goal win. INJURY SOURS TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH An injury to key defender Lisa Fyfe, that could well end her season, soured the top of the table clash all Western Border fans were looking forward to at the weekend. Fyfe’s knee injury is long standing and she battled it, missing games, last year as a Port MacDonnell player. But when she left the court early in the second quarter, things looked grim – not just for North in the contest, but for Fyfe going forward. It forced a reshuffle for the Tigers, who moved Mel Renko into the defensive circle with both Ashlea Edwards and Sarah Edwards earning time on court when blood rules also disrupted the contest. Fyfe had started in a blaze of glory in the first five minutes of the contest but the Saints adjusted quickly and young goaler Keah Lynch used her pace to great effect as she and Donna Denton enjoyed a perfect opening quarter – 18 without a miss. By half time, the lead was 13. Early in the third quarter the Tigers rallied and worked their way back to an eight goal deficit but the Saints, often through Hayley Dunn, were able to create turnover ball and with Lisa Duldig dominating the mid court, the Saints ended up

with a 24 goal win. The other two matches saw the expected winners but the margins were a lot tighter, showing both South Gambier and Casterton Sandford are slowly building into the season. South went down to East by 11 and West enjoyed an 11 goal win over the Cats.
