Naracoorte Town Hall. Karen Burow, a local artist who has held exhibitions locally and is experienced in teaching art, will help the children to produce a completed art work depicting the Caves’ story of mega-fauna, fossils, environment and extinction. Vertebrate palaeontologist Dr Liz Reed, will share with the children her vast knowledge of aged cave deposits and large mammal fossils at the Naracoorte Caves. The art workshops are the first stage in an ambitious project to use visual and performing art to tell the science-related story of South Australia’s only World Heritage listed site, the Naracoorte Caves, to the wider community. The visual and performing art will leverage the Naracoorte Caves status as one of the world’s 10 greatest fossil sites. The art works created at the workshops will be displayed at the Naracoorte Caves - World Heritage on our Doorstep exhibition at the Naracoorte Regional Art Gallery from August 9 to September 10. Everyone is welcome to attend the exhibition opening on August 9, from 5pm, or to drop into the gallery and contribute to the story telling by sharing your reflections of the artworks and your connection to the Naracoorte Caves. During the art workshops the children will be asked what they think is important about the Naracoorte Caves, what story they are telling through their work and why did they choose that

subject to paint. Michael Mills, from Heaps Good Productions, will use the stories gathered from the art work and the community to create and produce a live performance. Michael, the Unsung Hero of Science Communication in 2014, and also known as the singing palaeontologist Professor Flint, has written, directed, produced and appeared in more than 40 shows as a variety of characters. Later in the year a call will be put

out for people who would like to be involved in supporting the production and performing in the live performance. Registers of interest are welcome to council@nlc.sa.gov.au “The Naracoorte Caves are bursting with stories about our natural history as far back as 500,000 years,” said Naracoorte Lucindale Mahyor Erika Vickery. “Visual and performing art is an exciting way to present and interact with the science based research and discovery that is taking place in our own backyard at the Naracoorte Caves, South Australia’s only World Heritage site and home to Australia’s richest record of megafauna.” Funding support of $10,000 has been provided by Inspiring South Australia. The Inspiring South Australia Program is supported by the Australian Government through the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, the South Australian Department of State Development, the University of Adelaide, the University of South Australia, Flinders University and the South Australian Museum. More information on Inspiring South Australia is available at www.inspiringsa.org.au The Naracoorte Caves and the Limestone Coast Regional Science Hub have also supported the project. Places are limited and bookings are essential. To be part of this exciting project telling the science story of the Naracoorte Caves book by contacting the Naracoorte Lucindale Council on (08)8760 1100 or council@nlc.sa.gov. au or registering online at https:// www.naracoortelucindale.sa.gov.au/ artandscience by July 12. Children eight years and over are welcome adn they need to bring old clothes, shoes, smock, water bottle and snacks.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - I’D LIKE TO SHARE SOMETHING WITH YOU... By ROBBIE TANSEL I don’t want to alarm anyone but something terrible has happened to me recently. It’s pretty serious. It’s not like the pathetic little problems I’m sure most of you are dealing with. This is the big stuff. Let me tell you about it. Shaquille thinks he can eat food that was intended for me! You didn’t believe me that it was a big problem, did you? You thought this was the start of some joke thing like most weeks. You didn’t realise I was serious until I put an exclamation mark at the end of the sentence to emphasise how serious I was. So what is happening is that I’ll have a meal or snack ready to go. I might have bought some lovely hot chips. It may be a pizza. I might be working my way through a block of chocolate. Needless to say, whatever it is is delicious and full of sugar and/or fat. I can’t wait to eat it, and then Shaquille will ask if he can have a bite/piece/ lick. Sometimes he doesn’t even ask. He just takes it. This obviously puts me in a bit of a pickle. I don’t do sharing. If people try to eat my food normally,I tell them that you don’t get a body like mine by sharing your food.

Or I just stab them in the hand. What do they think is going to happen? But when it’s your child who is asking for some of your food…well it’s still the same principle and it’s not going to happen. It’s my food. Stay away from me, you little punk. Daddy’s got to eat his pizza and chips…and garlic bread…and Pepsi… and what’s for dessert by the way? I’m hungry. I’ll be back soon. I think one of the problems with Shaquille wanting to eat my food is it brings back bad memories. It took me forever to train Donna not to eat my food. Obviously she wasn’t eating my whole meal but like most women she’d take a chip here or there off my plate or a sip of my drink. It all adds up though. There was a bit of time there where I was concerned that it might actually cause me to lose some weight. Women are classic for stealing food off their husband’s plates. They order a salad, realise that it’s not going to satisfy them in any way and then want a piece of your pizza. They should just eat a proper meal in the first place. The big complication with this sharing thing when it comes to Shaq is that I spend a fair bit of time trying to teach him how to share. At kindy he needs to let other kids have a go with the paint. At the playground, he needs to let other youngsters have a turn on the slide. It kind of sends the wrong

message when I then don’t share with him. I’m not saying I’m going to share with him. That’s just not going to happen. I’m just saying that it doesn’t send a great message. I guess he’s just going to have to get used to the fact the world is full of hypocritical people who will let you down. It’s a tough lesson but he may as well get used to the fact that the world is a cruel place now. If I don’t manage to eat my whole meal, or it’s just not that good, then he’s welcome to have it. Otherwise, scoot off to the pantry and get yourself some Jatz crackers. I know what you’re thinking: “You’re being a bit selfish, Robbie.” Is the daddy lion being selfish when he kills the zebra and insists on being the first one to tear at the carcass? No he’s not. If a lion cub tries to jump

in and get involved he’ll get what he deserves and he wouldn’t expect otherwise. He did the work to get the food and other family members will need to wait their turn. I might have to handle the problem the way my father did. In our house during my childhood, left over roast potatoes would be put in the fridge at night. As an extremely special treat, they would then be reheated in the morning. I loved them as did my father. The way he stopped me from eating them was by spitting on them. I didn’t want them then. If you like sharing, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com I’m still hungry.

AUSSIE AUTHOR TO OFFICIALLY OPEN 2017 SHEEPVENTION

Renowned author, Rachael Treasure will open Sheepvention, on Monday, August 7, at 12pm. Rachael (pictured above) describes herself as an author and a regenerative agriculturalist. Amongst her talents she lists working as a jillaroo, rural journalist, ABC radio broadcaster, professional wool classer, part-time vet nurse, family farm manager, drover and stock camp cook. She has written six bestselling novels and she is published in Germany and the UK. In addition she has written a screen play collaborated on songs with the Wolfe Brothers and written three nonfiction books. One of these being, Dog Speak, a self- published book created as part of her Tasmanian Rural Women of the Year rural bursary.

LOCAL STUDENT HEADING TO CHINA AS CULTURAL AMBASSADOR Tension Woods College student Emily Jennings is embarking on a trip of a lifetime after snaring one of five places nationally to attend the 13th Shanghai International Youth Friendship Camp next month. The Millicent based teenager applied for a position in the Chinese Exchange Program last year, after being nominated by the school, but was only 14 and students were encouraged to be 15 before taking on the challenge. It is a huge coupe for Emily and the school’s Chinese language program under the tutelage of Bo Wei Xu. The selection proves is a strenuous one, taking into consideration way more than just Emily’s prowess with the Chinese language. “I was also required to provide a personal resume which had to meet strict criteria,” Emily said. “This had to include my educational achievements, sporting involvement and musical skills.” Fortunately Emily (pictured) had all those bases covered. Her A in Chinese, in both 2015 and ’16, was complemented by comparable results in maths, SOSE and netball. She also had plenty of sporting achievements to showcase. She successfully completed Surf & Survive Swimming Level 10 at Beachport in January last year, has completed her Bronze Medallion Swimming Certificate in 2015, along with Accompanied Rescue and Assisted Rescue course completion. She is currently captain of her club netball 15 & Under team – she plays for Tantanoola – and has enjoyed good success at the club,

playing in grand finals, a coach’s trophy and best on court in a grand final honour as well. Emily is also part of the South East Regional Netball Academy. Nine years of piano tuition saw Emily tick the music achievement box and there is also a strong emphasis on showing volunteering and community involvement, where Emily also had an impressive resume. For the past two years, she has been a volunteer instructor, coordinator and group leader of the Tiny Tots Program at the Millicent Little Athletics Club, where she, herself, was an athlete for many years. “I am in charge of setting up, planning activities and events and supervising the children in the group,” Emily said. “I also volunteer my time working in the canteen and selling raffle tickets at the local football club.” The applications for the program were betted in China and Emily received the good news she had been successful from the Australia China Friendship Society. “I consider it a huge honour as this is the first time there has been a successful applicant representing my school and the Limestone Coast region,” Emily said. “I am passionate about studying Chinese and have a real passion for learning mandarin and also immersing myself in the culture.” This camp will allow Emily to further extend herself and she is looking forward to the challenge. “I am eager to make a positive contribution to the 13th Shanghai International Youth Friendship Camp and I value this chance to demonstrate leadership as I am keen

Rachael has a great passion for working dogs and will often mention Hamilton dog trainer and breeder, Ian O’Connell’s Kelpies in her novels. Ian and Rachael struck up a friendship through the love of the Kelpie breed. Rachael has been over to the Casterton Kelpie Muster several times and was once gifted one of Ian’s pups. Visitors to Sheepvention can see Rachael at the opening of Sheepvention, and also at the Home Paddock stage on the Tuesday 8th of August. Rachael will be talking and signing books including her newly released memoir Down the Dirt Roads. We are also sure that Rachael will be seen checking out the Farm Dog events throughout Sheepvention. Sheepvention will be held at the Hamilton Showgrounds, Hamilton, Victoria. Tickets will be available at www.hamiltonshowgrounds.com.au or at the gate.

to help others grow, learn and succeed,” Emily said. “As I represent ACFS I am keen to adapt to the different cultural and culinary experiences which will

be offered. My goal is to continue to expand my knowledge and build on my education as I enjoy learning Chinese and its culture.”

Naracoorte Travel n Cruise will see the end of an era this Friday with original owner Tanya Mourbey departing after almost 12 years in business. In 2005, Tanya purchased the business from Gayle Davies, with a burning desire for success and an overwhelming passion for all things travel. In 2007, Kate Driver joined the business and it was then that the dynamic duo went from strength to strength, achieving great accolades and incredible success. Fast forward four years and they have grown so much, expanding the business into their own shop front in the Kincraig Plaza and employing the experienced Therese Oliver who complemented their team perfectly. A turning point came in December 2013 with Kate Harvey (nee Driver) becoming Tanya’s business partner,

the business changing its name to Naracoorte Travel n Cruise, and becoming a Travellers Choice member. Having travelled extensively throughout the world, Tanya’s most memorable trips were escorting local groups on various adventures including cruising the rivers of Europe, trekking Kokoda, exploring Scandinavia and hiking Machu Picchu, with a trek with the gorillas an absolute highlight. Her experience and knowledge of the industry will be missed but certainly not forgotten as Kate and the team continue the legacy, utilising Tanya’s insight to all things travel that has become a part of daily operations in the office. Tanya expressed how extremely lucky she has been to have a band of amazing loyal customers who have supported her over the years. She has also been fortunate enough to have been mentored by expert industry colleagues and supported by incredible staff, which has been instrumental in her success. Fellow Travellers Choice member, Greg Close will join Kate Harvey in partnership as of July 1 and brings more than 15 years of experience to the company and great business insight by owning three other Travellers Choice stores. His wealth of experience coupled with his friendly nature will certainly complement the business and he will be a welcome addition to the team. The regular friendly faces of Kate Harvey, Therese, Vanessa, Kate Trenorden and Kelly will continue be on show, helping clients plan the perfect holiday experience. We wish Tanya all the very best in her next chapter in life and offer a warm welcome to Greg, wishing him and Kate continued success, starting with the promotion of Therese Oliver to office manager. As a team, they will continue to offer the superior, award-winning service that is exclusive to Naracoorte Travel n Cruise. PIGS FOR HOPE CAMPAIGN DELIVERS ON ITS PROMISE Helen Roberts is back from Northern Sumatra and she is all smiles. She has been the local driver behind a nationwide campaign Pigs for Hope – a program looking to break the poverty cycle for families and keep their children in school. “It was a nationwide campaign but it was here in the Limestone Coast and South West Victoria that most of the fundraising and support came,” Helen said. Helen and a team of volunteers headed to Maden, the village in Northern Sumatra, where 12 months ago, this same team witnessed life for families basically living and working on a dump. “We went to where we were last year and it was even worse this time,” Helen said. “There were more children working on the dump

and more young men working on the dump.” But then came the lifeline with Helen and the Pigs for Hope team delivering 32 animals to 19 families – piglets, sows and pairs of goats giving families a chance to establish a livelihood, with the added bonus of the children staying in school, as per the agreement. The program is simple – families are given animals they can earn a living from and in return rather than taking their children out of school to work on the dump, they continue their education. “The families were so grateful when we delivered the animals,” Helen said. “The most amazing thing is when they finally realised the animals were theirs – they weren’t on loan, they didn’t have to be given back.” Aside from the condition that the children stay in school, there is one more caveat to the Pigs for Hope recipients – when they have their first litter, they don’t get to keep them all but return some to the Bukitdoa Ministry Team that run the school so they can finance teachers and school programs and also gift the animals to new families in need. “That is just so the school can continue to provide free education for the village children,” Helen said. Interestingly, Maden is considered a village but does boast 1.5million people and it takes two days on a motorbike to get around to all the families to deliver

their animals. Adding another layer to the program, the animals were bred by local farmers. And even before Helen and the team left Maden, the stories of the impact of the program started to flow. “We had two families come to us and say they were just about to take their children out of school but could now let them continue their education,” Helen said. “They happened to be the top two students at the school. They are bright children and it is great to now they can continue their learning.” And kids from schools like the one being run by the Bukitdoa Ministry Team have more good news with the Indonesian Government setting up scholarships covering 40 percent of tertiary fees for students who continue to university. “Some of the funding from the Pigs for Hope program might go towards

that at some stage in the future, too,” Helen said. But for now, Pigs for Hope is keeping kids in school and potentially rescuing them from a life of sifting the soil on the dump to make what amounts to 2.5 cents a day, which is what they get paid for sifting a kilogram of soil. And there are other programs looking to help break the poverty cycle as well. There was one woman who had learned to make dishwashing liquid. She collects the 600ml soft drink bottles, cleans them, fills them with the liquid and then on sells her product. “You certainly can’t accuse them of not working hard,” Helen said. “They do look for ways to help themselves.”

The program has also been able to fund a caretaker to check on each family and their animals once a month to ensure the animals are doing well, the families are coping and the children are in school. “It is about checking on the family’s well being,” Helen said. The program is ongoing and Helen intends to return in 12 months time when the first litters will be ready to be handed on to new families. “The reason I went over this time was to meet the families and see for myself how it will impact them and that’s why I will go back to see how it all goes and meet the new families,” she said. “Our next problem, which is a positive problem, is as the program grows and more children stay in school, we will need a bigger school.” The Bukitdoa Ministry Team has also appointed a social worker to look after the 19 recipient families. “I just wanted everyone who was so generous to the Pigs for Hope Program to know the impact it is having and that it is making a difference in people’s lives.” Local fundraisers included movie days and a popular cake decorating competition and exhibition where local cooks whipped up the birthday cakes from the iconic Women’s Weekly book. WALKING IN HER FATHER’S SHOES Every time Sarah Chant steps on to her farm near Colac, she brings a piece of her father Steven with her. Steven passed away a year ago leaving Sarah, now 26, with big boots to fill. However, he did his best to make sure she was ready to take the reins. Sarah started the process of running the farm a year before her father died and a diary he kept continues to show the way. “Dad had cancer for a long time so I’d been gradually stepping up,” Sarah said. “We knew it was terminal so he started keeping a diary for me and jotted down little notes of things I’d need to run the farm. It wasn’t easy but it was easier knowing that it was going to happen. It wasn’t like I woke up one morning and was in charge of a 250cow dairy farm.” Losing her father at age 55 might have made Sarah stronger in many ways, but it still hurt. “It was infuriating,” she said. “He was fit and strong, barely drank and quit smoking when I was a little girl because he realised how bad it was for his health. He had a healthy, active lifestyle and still got cancer.” Sarah grew up on the farm at Warrion, 20 minutes north of Colac and

had just returned from Canada when she learned of her father’s illness. “I probably would have travelled for a couple more years but I was always going to come home on the farm,” she said. “I’d wanted to do it since I was a little girl. “I have older brothers but they didn’t want the farm so it went to the youngest daughter. We broke tradition there.” Sarah’s Mum Roslyn does the books and Sarah runs the farm business supported by long-time employee Joel Kirkman. “When I was first in charge I was a bit nervous,” Sarah said. “Joel knows the run of the place so when I started making the calls I’d ask if it was the right thing and he’s say `whatever you think Sarah’. I’m getting more comfortable with it now.” From a dairy perspective, Steven’s death couldn’t have been at a worse time. “We got news of the milk price drop the day Dad died,” Sarah said. “I know it was terrible for farmers but it didn’t upset me that much; we had bigger things to deal with.” The Murray Goulburn supplier has weathered the storm. “We’ve coped quite well,” Sarah said. “There was a bit of cost cutting

and we’re not spending where we don’t have to, but having such a fantastic season has saved a lot of local farmers who buy in feed. We cut more hay and silage than ever before with the good spring. If we had the milk price drop and a tough season it would have been a lot worse.” The farm at Warrion, 20 minutes north of Colac, was purchased by Steven’s parents when he was 18. It’s on the northern edge of Western Victoria’s dairying region but irrigation and “amazing soil” make it good dairy country. “Growing up on a dairy farm you’re born into loving it,” she said. “It’s a job you can never perfect. You’re always learning new things. I love working with the cattle and rearing calves; I’m a sucker for going back to the calf shed after hours if anyone is sick. I love being outside on the farm. Having lost Dad, it’s a bit of a connection to him.” Sarah was recently a finalist in the Best Employee category of the Great South West Dairy Awards. Right - Sarah Chant with her dog Tully.

PENOLA STAR TAKES HOME MIRROR BALL In the end it came down to the two stars with the most dance experience – Penola’s Amanda Flint and Mount Gambier’s Samara Greer and it was Amanda who took home the winner’s sash from the weekend’s Stand Like Stone Foundation major fundraiser Swinging With The Stars. The duo had a dance off to decide the 2017 and 10th anniversary champion and it was the fleet footed Flint that won the day, taking home the coveted mirror ball trophy. The People’s Choice Award, which is presented to the highest fundraiser of the competition went to Port MacDonnell’s Grant Fensom with a staggering total of almost $45,000 bringing the 2017 effort across all eight stars to $123,000, which was an increase of $25,000 from the 2016 event. FACELIFT UNDERWAY FOR WOOLSHED Tradespeople from as far afield as Queensland converged on the Glencoe Woolshed earlier this month to begin a week of restoration work, learning 19th century building skills as they go. They are so keen on the project, they are each paying their own way. The works program is a partnership of the National Trust of South Australia and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). The twelve conservationists, mostly tradies and owners of historic buildings, will learn hands-on how to conserve limestone and timber, lime washing and lime mortar techniques. They will earn a certificate of competency recognized around Australia by conservation authorities. Instructor and CITB stonework

specialist, Keith McAllister saidthere was a national shortage of heritage building skills and unless old buildings are maintained in the old ways, the results can be disastrous. “For instance, old lime mortar allows a building to breathe moisture,” he said. “If it is replaced my modern impermeable cement, the moisture will attack the limestone on buildings like the woolshed. Likewise for modern paint versus traditional limewash.” The current restoration drive is managed by the new Glencoe Woolshed branch of the National Trust, the first major project on the building since 1977, when Premier Don Dunstan raised $100,000 to prevent it falling into ruin. The Woolshed was built in 1863 and is believed to be the only one still in its original blade-shearing condition.

TALE OF TWO HALVES Pioneers 104 d Geelong 94 If someone had offered Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers head coach Richard Hill a 10 point home court win over Geelong before Friday night he would have taken it. In fact, at half time on Friday night, the Pioneers had outscored the Supercats by 61 points across six quarters of basketball in six days. But after potentially the best half of basketball every played by the Pioneers, scoring 76 points, came some of the worst, although the coach was happy with how his charges, who saw the 28 point half time lead dissipate to only four points with 41 seconds to play, closed out the contest. “Basically Geelong was really bad in the first half and we were really bad in the second half,” Hill said. “We are both really good teams and so could take advantage of the other side.” Just as the coach doesn’t expect to see another 76 point half any time soon, he also doesn’t expect a second half conversion of two from 18 from three point territory. Hill also acknowledged that the Supercats did make some adjustments in the half time break at both ends of the court, especially moving from a perimeter offence that saw then crashing the boards and working in the paint more. “It is always extremely difficult when you go

in 28 points up at half time,” Hill said. “I know that sounds silly but it is difficult and they had nothing to lose and came out and played like that.”Geelong actually shot less points in the second half, despite that almost Houdini like comeback. “It was out offence that really spluttered in the second half,” Hill said. “If it had been an arm wrestle and we won by 10 points we’d be thrilled but I know the players are really disappointed in the performance.” What was pleasing was the way the players were able to execute team plans at both ends of the court in the dying minutes. Brad Hill and Erik Burdon showed nerves of steel from the free throw line and in the end the margin was 10. “We were able to stall their momentum so that’s a good sign,” Hill said. “We made good decisions at the defensive end on two crucial possessions and they couldn’t score when it mattered.” And this weekend is another game that matters with a rare Saturday night clash at the Icehouse as the Pioneers host South Conference leaders Ballarat. MAGPIES GET BACK TO BASICS Kalangadoo 20.14 (134) d Tantanoola 18.11 (71) Kalangadoo was flying early in 2017 and then in the past two rounds found itself on the wrong side of the scoreboard but at the weekend, it was back to the winner’s list with a solid but patchy performance. “It was important for us to grind our way back into form,” coach Ben Mules said. “We got back to basics and starting doing the things we have been working on at training.” While the scoreboard alone indicates a consistent four quarter effort, Mules said there was still room for improvement for consistency within quarters. “We had good 10 or 15 minute patches but

then dropped off and let them back in and we have to work on that,” Mules said. Brad Auld certainly led the way for the Magpies with his emergence as an on field leader. “He was fantastic,” Mules said. “He work on ball and in the forward line was great and he made the most of every possession and the defensive side of his game has really stepped up.” Jon Mules also had the better of the ruck duel and Sam McManus was often the man driving the ball into the forward fifty but Mules said there was probably six or seven players that led the way for the Magpies.

Hard working, selfless, tough – they are the words that come to mind when team mates and opponents contemplate Garth Willoughby. And at the weekend the North Gambier stalwart clocked up 400 games – a feat rare and a testament to his commitment to training and attention to detail in preparing week in and week out for the rigours of senior Western Border football. Willoughby may have reached the milestone earlier but for a broken cheekbone, fractured skull, broken leg and a handful of broken noses. The tenacious onballer was especially familiar with the Hamilton hospital, which is where many of the broken bones occurred and while Willoughby has conceded his nose will never be what it was before he started his football journey, his cheek is back to normal thanks to a steel plate. Tackling and a ferocious attack on the ball have always been the hallmarks of Willoughby’s game, which started in senior ranks in 1993. Originally he wore number 43 before donning the now familiar 24. A junior at the Tigers, schooling in Adelaide tore Willoughby

away from Vansittart Park before he returned and forced his way, while still in the Under 18s, into the senior line-up. He has been a regular interleague and South East zone representative and has racked up the individual and team accolades at Tigerland. Garth cites Adam Salmon as the opponent he most enjoyed going head to head against and that was in a period of Western Border football when South always had the better of the hapless Tigers. Garth has also spent his time coaching at the club, taking the reins of the Under 18s and grooming such current A Grade stars as Tim McInerney and Nick Blachut, winning the South East coach of the year that season. He has four reserves premiership medallions as he now plies his trade in B Grade, passing on his expertise to the club’s younger players and still playing in the same tough and uncompromising way he always has.

The Demons held on for a gutsy two goal win over competition improver Millicent. “The Casterton game was a disappointing effort but it was always going to be how we responded,” coach Heath Mitchell said. “We showed we can still compete in this competition and challenge for finals.” Mitchell believes the loss to the Cats was a great lesson for his young players, who struggled against the bigger bodies Casterton Sandford line-up, about the intensity required at senior level. “You can’t drop off at all,” Mitchell said. It was the usual suspects leading the way for the Demons with Brett O’Neil, Brad Bryant, Scott Fleming and Jak Ryan among South’s best. “Those guys are absolutely fantastic with our young group, setting the standard not just on Saturdays but at training and all sorts of areas,” Mitchell said. Early in the contest it was an unlikely hero – James Patzel – playing his first A grade game since 2011. “He came in and had an impact in the first five minutes,” Mitchell said. “His physicality and ability to compete, he really gave us something different, a big bodied midfielder and he was a standout in the first quarter.” A six goal half time lead became a three goal three quarter time lead and Mitchell asked for a response. Millicent put a couple extras behind the ball in the second half and the Demons failed to adjust. “We went back to the bad habit of bombing the ball in and not looking for a target and that was probably the difference between kicking six behinds instead of a couple of goals which could have made things more comfortable,” Mitchell said. The third quarter comeback by the Saints was instigated by key tall Dylan Bromley who sprang to life, while Tom Hutchesson and his pace and willingness to run and break the lines was another pivotal player for the Saints.

LOCAL SPORT THREE HUGE DAYS OF SHOOTING

The June long weekend saw 90 shooters converge on the South East of South Australia for the Limestone Coast Sporting 225 sponsored by Outdoor Sporting Agencies. Following the success of last year’s inaugural event the three clubs involved; Kingston Clay Target Club, Lake Bonney Sporting Clays and South East Field & Game worked hard to cement this unique event on the calendar of the sporting Clay community and attracted competitors from South Australia,

Victoria and Queensland. DAY 1 AT KINGSTON Clay Target Club The road to Kingston was shrouded in Fog, so it was no surprise for competitors to face a delayed start to tackle the course set by Bruce Parker & Ken Atkin. Once the sun had burnt through the fog conditions were perfect and Last year’s winner Jeremy Kent ended up High Gun for the day shooting 72/75, while Kingston’s Jo Densley won AA Grade from Warrnambool pair of Stephen

Sambell and Jamie Dunn. Leigh Dunn matched the score of his son to win A grade from Julian Fry and Gavin Smith. Adelaide’s Wendel Litchfield won B grade convincingly as did Geoff Boyd in C grade, who also won the Handicap High Gun for the day earning a new Miroku shotgun. Experienced Veteran shooter Ron Rhook won his grade by 5 targets to remain in contention for the overall competition. Neville Johnston took out the Super Veteran’s grade whilst Lake Bonney’s Tash Bellinger dominated the Ladies from Janette Densley & Vicki Fabris. Daniel Banning from Kingston won the Juniors whilst the talented Daniel Falco, from Adelaide, comfortably won the Sub Juniors. Possible “25” Badges were earned by Jeremy Kent, Gavin Dyson, Stephen Sambell, Ron Rhook & Clinton Hall DAY 2 LAKE BONNEY SPORTING CLAYS Early drizzle meant a damp start for shooters as competitors were challenged by the targets set by Mark Fabris. Jamie Dunn & Gavin Dyson set their stall out early on, as they were determined not to allow Jeremy Kent to pull away in the overall competition and both earned “25”badges in the process. Jamie Dunn shot an impressive 73/75 for the day to take out the High Gun whilst Gavin

Dyson had the consolation of winning AA grade 72/75 from Jeremy Kent and Lake Bonney’s Danny Bellinger. Consistent shooting from Leigh Dunn saw him, once again, take out A grade. In the B grade Michael Gates pushed Wendel Litchfield hard, only to fall one target short. The C grade was tied between Mark Hogan & Charles Wallis with Hogan emerging victorious on a countback. In the Super Veterans, Adelaide shooter John Monaghan kept local legend Malcolm Whitehead at bay by one target. CONT. OPP. LOCAL SPORT THREE HUGE DAYS OF SHOOTING FROM OPP. PAGE Ron Rhook again won Veterans with 68/75 and remained in the hunt for the overall lead. Tash Bellinger again proved her skills by winning the Ladies class comfortably. The Juniors was won by Daniel Banning with an impressive score of 71/75, equal 3rd overall for the day, right up there with the AA grade shooters. Daniel Falco won the Sub Juniors but was pushed hard by young Shak VonStanke. A deliriously happy Scott Hall won the handicap High Gun for the day, earning a new Miroku shotgun for his efforts. DAY 3 BURRUNGULE PARK (SE Field & Game) The concluding day of competition at Burrungule Park with targets set by Ken Atkin & Neville Kent started off in damp conditions but finished warm and dry. With a great array of prizes on offer from sponsors K & S Fuels, Best Ociana Seafoods, Global Clay technologies, Midfield Group & Torresan Estate, the pressure was on shooters to perform at

the best of their abilities. Jeremy Kent once again proved to be the class of the field shooting a very consistent 72/73, Claiming “there were no easy targets” on a challenging and tricky course, to take out his second High Gun of the weekend. Jamie Dunn shot 71/72 to win AA grade from Stephen Sambell and Gavin Dyson. Gavin Smith won A grade whilst Wendel Litchfield smashed all-comers in B grade to win by 12 targets also winning the handicap High Gun for the day. Charles Wallis blitzed the C grade as did Malcolm Whitehead in the super veterans. Visiting Melbourne shooter Peter Reading managed to get the better of Ron Rhook to win Veterans and Tash Bellinger again won the Ladies with a creditable 64/75. Junior Campbell Serle beat Daniel Banning on countback after their scores were tied. Daniel Falco won the sub juniors with 63/75 from young trap shooter from Jamestown, Liam Morgan. Jeremy Kent & Gavin Dyson shot the only possible “25”badges.

OVERALL WINNERS LCS225 Unusually after 225 targets there were no shoot offs required to determine the winner’s placings. The overall High Gun winner Jeremy Kent shot an impressive 215/225 finishing 2 targets ahead of Jamie Dunn who had the consolation of winning AA grade with 213/225 from Gavin Dyson & Stephen Sambell. Consistency helped Gavin Smith take out the A grade overall from Leigh Dunn. Wendel Litchfield won the B grade by an amazing 28 targets overall from Peter Klieve & Matt Crowe. A consistent weekend’s shooting helped Charles Wallis secure the C grade overall prize. Malcolm demonstrated all his old skills to win the super veterans with 198/225 as did Ron Rhook in the veterans with a winning score of 205/225. Tash Bellinger showed the ladies a clean pair of heels with 189/225. Daniel Banning showed real promise for the future with 173/225 and taking out the Juniors. Daniel Falco won the Sub Juniors

REIGNING BEST & FAIREST CLOCKS UP 300 GAMES Since returning from Adelaide, Lisa McGregor has been one of the most consistent performers in the Western Border Netball Association – an elite goaler, who has regularly finished in the top five of the association best & fairest, and been a long standing member of the team of the year, McGregor finally snared the accolade no one would deny her – the Western Border Netball Association A Grade best & fairest in 2016 and in round seven she celebrated another career milestone – 300 games as a Roo. And they’ve been 300 quality games – her dominant junior career turning into a dominant senior career, where basically only a Western Border A Grade premiership eludes her. And for all her assets as a player – accurate, hard working, smart –

with 182/225 and clearly demonstrated his ever developing skills. Above - Jame Dunn (AA Winner)

SE SENIORS TENNIS

McGregor is just as valuable an asset off the court. She is a long standing committee member at West Gambier, holding down key executive roles over the journey, and she has also been a long standing junior coach, grooming the next generation of Roo superstars. Last year she took on the A Grade coaching role and has continued in that position in 2017, giving club juniors a taste of senior action, and looking to see West return as a contender. McGregor is also a C Grade badged umpire, meaning there is no aspect of the game or running a club that she hasn’t been involved in. There are other players with comparable resumes, but McGregor’s 300 game career, on and off the court, sits comfortably alongside the competition’s best.
