Pasta primavera 225g (1 1/2 cups) raw cashews 250ml (1 cup) warm water 300g penne pasta (check the pasta label to ensure it is egg-free and suitable for vegans) 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed, cut into thirds

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1 leek, trimmed, sliced 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 zucchini, cut into noodles using a spiraliser Fresh basil leaves, to serve

Method Place the cashews in a heatproof bowl. Pour over enough boiling water to cover. Set aside for 1 hour to soak. Drain the cashews and transfer to a food processor. Add 125ml (1/2 cup) warm water and process until smooth, adding the remaining 125ml (1/2 cup) warm water in 2 more batches to make a sauce consistency. Cook the pasta in a large saucepan of boiling water following the packet directions or until al dente, adding the asparagus for the last 3 minutes of cooking. Drain, reserving 125ml (1/2 cup) cooking liquid. Return the pasta and asparagus to the pan. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add the leek and garlic. Cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until softened. Add the zucchini and cook, stirring often, for 3 minutes or until softened. Add the leek mixture and half the cashew mixture to the pasta.

Toss until combined, adding the reserved cooking liquid to thin the sauce as needed. Season with pepper. Divide among serving bowls and sprinkle with basil.

THE MJ DANCE EMPIRE CONTINUES TO EXPAND With studios now in Mount Gambier, Naracoorte and Casterton, MJ Dance Studio is branching out even further, opening studio number four in Adelaide on April 30. Classes have been running at the fully equipped Glenelg studio but with open days this weekend, on April 28 and 29, the MJ story is about to start its Adelaide chapter officially on Monday.

MJ alumni, Matt Cram, who has studied dance in Sydney, ballet in New York and made a career in the fast growing cruise liner entertainment industry, is heading up the studio for principal Maria Slape, who is based at the original Mount Gambier school.

Both Maria, and her daughter Christina Jenkin, who is a key teacher for the Limestone Coast based students, will be attending the weekend opening celebrations.

“We are holding two full days of workshops,” Matt said. “We already have around 30 interested students in coming to the open days and that was before we really started promoting anything.”

For Maria, the Adelaide venture is an exciting one and she could not be more thrilled to have an MJ graduate in charge.

“He’s (Matt) an MJ kid,” she said. “He has been through the ranks and we have a really healthy, strong relationship as well, and that’s important when you are doing something like this. I believe he can do it and it was a great opportunity for us to go to Adelaide.”

been on Maria’s radar but when Matt decided he wanted to leave the high seas and put roots down in Adelaide close to family, discussions started in earnest.

“I started talking to Maria about my next move and what my options were and so I suggested the whole idea of an MJ in Adelaide,” Matt said. “I had always thought about teaching but I wanted to wait until I was ready.”

Not only does Matt now think he has gained enough experience to take on a serious teaching role but so does his former mentor, Maria.

“I love that he’s already listening and learning about what we do here (in Mount Gambier),” Maria said. “We really want it to be a very similar brand, that’s

really important, and that’s what Matt wants too.”

Naracoorte classes were established six years ago, with Kaycee Rodda taking charge after Christina did the ground work, while the Casterton classes are quite a recent addition to the MJ family.

“I was approached by a father about starting up in Casterton and it just went from there,” Maria said.

And while Maria admits perhaps an opportunity to expand to Adelaide had been floating around the back of her mind, it was always going to take a perfect storm – like the one she has achieved with Matt – to make it happen.

“It was always going to have to be the right person and I guess it was a matter of time but I think it wouldn’t have happened unless it was one of the MJ family, one of my kids that wanted to do it.”

So after 30 years after opening the doors of her first studio in Mount Gambier, Maria will be opening the Glenelg studio doors this weekend and handing her legacy over to Matt.

“It is such a great opportunity for me,” Matt said. “I feel like I am ready mentally and also have the tools and knowledge to now inspire the younger up and comers. I feel like it’s the right time. Maria has always been my mentor and she will be with me every step of the way.”

The school will offer the full array of classes, as offered at its Mount Gambier studio, including acrobatics, contemporary, ballet, jazz and lyrical.

WATER CONSERVATION MESSAGE MADE SIMPLE FOR KIDS Kinder children across the Portland and Heywood district will become some of the communities youngest water advocates when they come together for water-conservation themed activities aligning with the book, Touch the Earth.

Touch the Earth, a children’s book written by Julian Lennon with Bart Davis and illustrated by Smiljana Coh, will be delivered to all children registered with United Way Glenelg’s Imagination Library this April to acknowledge Earth Day. Sponsored by Wannon Water through their Ripple Effect Grants, United Way Glenelg has partnered with Bayview College’s “Kids teaching kids” program to deliver seven interactive themed stations for the children.

Along with volunteers from Wannon Water, Portland Aluminium and United Way Glenelg, the students will guide the kinder children through activities such as; planting plants and using funnels, sieves and magnets to filter water.

These activities will enable the children to develop an understanding of the water cycle and basic principles that are crucial to creating a group of children that will grow up to be conscious of the importance of water conservation.

United Way Glenelg executive officer Nicole Angelino said the book, “Touch the Earth” delivers the water conservation message in a very simple way that children can understand.

“The illustrations in the book are cute and the story is fun.,” she said. “The story takes the young reader on a journey around the world to help solve issues with water.” A paperback version has been specially published for United Way making the book more accessible to more children. Rise Above the Pack Workshops are engaging, interactive, educational workshops that will equip participants to walk away with the skills and confidence to be a positive bystander and safely stand up and speak out in situations where the safety or respect of women and other marginalised groups is in question, whether that be in the workplace or in public spaces. These workshops, delivered to workplaces and community groups, educate participants about how gender inequality operates in social, cultural and workplace contexts, and how gender inequality is linked to violence against women. These workshops provide community members with practical and immediate knowledge and skills to be able to contribute to the prevention of violence against women with the aim of making their community safer. Workshops are free to attend. There will be refreshments provided at the workshops and participants will receive a certificate for the training.

DISABILITY PROVIDER HOLDS INAUGURAL CAMP FOR KIDS Children and teenagers with disabilities have enjoyed Cara’s first-ever South East Camps for Kids camp. Cara is a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and Camps for Kids offers children and teens with disabilities the chance to learn, grow in their independence and, most importantly, have fun while they’re doing it. Seven campers with disabilities stayed in Robe from Tuesday to Thursday last week. Cara service manager Kylie Withers said everything the campers experienced was designed to support them towards independence. “We’ve been kayaking, on the jumping castle, we’ve been on a nature walk, had a campfire, as well as doing tie-dying and kite making,” Ms Withers said. “All these activities are aligned with the campers’ NDIS goals – so it’s about social participation, working together, developing fine motor skills, following a process – but of course they’re loads of fun, too. It means the campers are able to grow and develop, make friends and experience that rite of passage of going away on camp.” Cara’s Camps for Kids are available for children with disabilities aged up to 18 and trained Cara staff are on hand to work with the campers. HISTORY AND HORTICULTURE COLLIDE FOR STUNNING OPEN GARDEN EXPERIENCE This weekend, the stunning homestead gardens of John Riddoch will be open to the public as Yallum Park swings open its gates as part of the Open Gardens South Australia scheme.

Dating back to the 1850s, the property boasts a wealth of stories, including hosting King George V, before he ascended the throne, and providing the backdrop for some of poet Adam Lindsay Gordon’s work.

Open Saturday and Sunday, from 10am-4.30pm, owners Andy and Annie Clifford have nominated the CWA as their charity of choice and aside from exploring the stunning grounds of Yallum Park, there will be wine tasting from Majella Wines, plant sales, iris plant sales from a specialist grower, an iron forging demonstration, rolled steel demonstration and afternoon teas.

Visitors can also enjoy a tour of the ground floor of the main house, at a cost of $10, which needs to be booked by phoning Andy on 0418 854 505.

Spanning twenty acres, the Yallum Park gardens were landscaped in the 1860s, around the same time John Riddoch built the impressive homestead . Riddoch’s head gardener, John

Warner, landscaped eight acres of garden at that time, planting trees and shrubs sourced from around the world, and, along with a team of six gardeners, maintained the stunning property.

It was in 1914 that the Clifford family became custodians of the iconic property when it was purchased by William and Lucy Clifford, from the estate of John Riddoch. In 1967, it was passed onto Glen and Gaylee Clifford, before the current owners took over in 2014, meaning it has been in Clifford hands for more than a century.

“Since moving to Yallum we have restored, with the help of our son Darren, the main entrance gates, and planted trees along the impressive 750m drive, that complement the original trees planted in the 1880s,” Andy said.

And the original plantings are still prevalent, with many of the original trees, shrubs and roses, planted from 1850 to 1880, still forming part of Yallum park’s garden today. “ The oldest recorded shrub, the trumpet honeysuckle, is still standing on the eastern wall of the Austin house,” Andy said.

There is also a Fortunes Double Yellow Rose that dates back to the 1860s still flourishing at the northern end of the Gordon house.

“Yallum is basically a tree garden but since moving here four years ago we have extended the flower beds around the main house, to add colour and interest,” Andy said. “We have planted

dapne, fuscias, hydrangeas, lavenders, rosemary, hebes, roses, salvias, iris, azaleas and gardenias.”

The new garden beds are set behind the original English box hedges, that were planted in 1880. “Throughout the garden we have introduced statues, urns, pots and garden seating to complement the large trees, shrubs and under-plantings,” Andy said.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - LET’S ALL GO TO THE MOVIES... By ROBBIE TANSEL WHEN ART AND FASHION MERGE I’d like to start this week by declaring I really enjoy going to the movies.

It doesn’t particularly matter what I’m going to see. I’m pretty easy to please when it comes to a movie I don’t analyse the quality of the filmmaking, or the ability of the actors. I look for something that keeps me entertained. Essentially I like the experience of going to the movies. Give me a lovely Pepsi and some popcorn or a choc top, and I’m a happy little fella.

I had an interesting experience at the movies this week though. Donna and I had offloaded Shaquille to his grandparents (suckers!) and decided to go and enjoy a movie which wasn’t animated. I’d forgotten they make movies like that. We walked into the theatre just as the lights were about to go down to find there was only one person in the theatre.

My immediate thought was, “Am I intruding on something here? Was this man really looking forward to having the theatre all to himself and we’ve ruined it now?”

Next I worried that maybe us arriving would make him embarrassed or uncomfortable. I’m sure he’d decided to go to the movies thinking, “It’ll be fine going to the movies by myself. I’ll just sit near some of the other many

people in the theatre and no-one will notice that I’m actually there by myself.

I’ll totally blend in.” Then he walked into the theatre to find that he was there all by himself. He sat there feeling anxious for the next 10 minutes, but as it got closer to movie time he thought, “This is going to be okay. No one will come and no one will ever know that I was here by myself.” And then we ruined it.

Donna and I arriving had outed him as a loser with no friends…who goes to the movies by himself.

My next concern was he might decide to come and sit with us. “Hi guys. I’m Jimmy. We might as well all sit together and enjoy this movie together.

While we’re watching the previews, let me tell you about my troll doll collection.”

One of my next thoughts was, “Are we about to watch a really dodgy movie? I haven’t read any reviews, but is it possible that most of the rest of Mount Gambier has, and I’ve just wasted forty dollars?”

A real positive looked like being that I wouldn’t have to worry about the other movie goers talking throughout the movie, which is always one of my

pet hates at the movies. My friend Jimmy was unlikely to be having any conversations, unless he’d brought his imaginary friend along.

Of course, I then remembered that I had Donna with me. She’s one of those people who talks throughout movies and television shows. “I can’t believe she just did that. I wouldn’t have let him in the car.”

She particularly enjoys asking questions while we’re watching. “What did he say?” “Is that his long lost brother from the start of the movie?”

I felt guilty now that having Donna there asking me questions throughout the movie was going to ruin Jimmy’s experience of the movie. I shouldn’t have been worried. At one point she asked, “Was that the man from the first movie?” I said, “I’m not sure.” Jimmy turned around and pitched in with, “No, you’re thinking of the guy who died in the space ship battle.” They had a lovely chat and both ended up with a better understanding of what was happening.

Of course they then had to ask me to fill in what had happened over the previous three minutes while they’d been talking. They each had a new friend though.

From May 3-6, coinciding with Mount Gambier coming alive for Generations in Jazz, the group will hold its annual exhibition at the Mount Gambier Library. Showcasing original items that boast colour, texture and a hint of quirky, the exhibition pieces make for unique gifts and wonderful additions to your winter wardrobe. “Whether you fancy a lacey shawl , colourful beanie or warm gloves for frosty fingers there will be something there to suit your taste and pocket,” group member Julianne Woodruff said. The exhibition has proved a happy hunting ground for people searching for a Mother’s Day gift. “It is wonderful to give a gift

that is truly unique and handcrafted,” Julianne said. The time honoured skills of crochet, knitting, embroidery and lacemaking will all be on show at the four day exhibition. “Felting, weaving, upcycling and textile jewellery making will also be part of the exhibition,” Julianne said. Twisted Threads will also be running a raffle with a chance to win an original masterpiece or a range of craft books, with profits going back to the library. There is no doubt Noel Barr Toyota is one of the shining lights in Toyota’s Australian family.

For the second consecutive year, the Mount Gambier dealership easily hit all the key performance indicators to be one of the few operations, nationwide, to be eligible for the President’s Award.

On top of that continued standard of excellence, Noel Barr Toyota picked up three other awards for Service Excellence (Bronze); Business Management Excellence (Bronze) and

Guest Experience and Brand Excellence (Silver).

The awards were handed out at a gala presentation in Adelaide last month, covering all South Australian and Northern Territory dealerships, for the 2017 year.

service criteria.

Customer surveys and Toyota audits ensure everything in the service department is meeting Toyota’s high standards.

Rebecca Gruar was the recipient of the Business Excellence accolade, courtesy of her stringent adherence to the Toyota business plan, which sees all things operational and financial reported on monthly.

Reaching a decade milestone is definitely a celebration worth having and that’s exactly what Mount Gambier based square dancing club Allabout Squares did earlier this month. Founded on the unwavering passion of locally based caller Andrea Braun, Allabout Squares saw almost 50 dancers, from as far away as Adelaide and the Mornington Peninsula, take part in the three day dance party. Melbourne based caller Mike Davey was the guest caller for the 10 year anniversary celebrations, with six other visiting callers help keep the party going, along with Andrea, who is one of a rare breed – female square dancing callers.

Allabout Squares is the only live calling club in the region. It was while living in Victoria that Andrea first was exposed to square dancing when a friend’s father got her involved. “I gradually got more and more into it,” Andrea said.

She even went overseas, completing some calling training in England, while living and working there for 12 months.

Returning to Australia in 1999, by 2000 she had set up her own club and then she brought that expertise when she relocated to Mount Gambier and

establishing Allabout Squares in 2008.

Such is her passion, Andrea taught square dancing at Glenburnie Primary School for three years and was thrilled to see how much the children took to the dying art. Ironically the year Andrea set up the Mount Gambier club was the year legendary Australian dance caller Jim Vickers-Willis died. Andrea remembers all too well, the hey day of square dancing in the 1950s and ‘60s. “Jim would be calling at clubs in Melbourne for 5000 people,” Andrea said. And many of those people, that first took up square dancing in that era, are still dancing to day. Attracting a new generation is the challenge, as it is with so many community groups.

Those that attended the Allabout Squares 10th anniversary celebrations had that same passion of the crowds of the 1950s and ‘60s as they danced the night away on Friday night at the Mil Lel hall, enjoyed lunch at the RSL on Saturday, before retuning to the Mil Lel hall dance floor Saturday night and then heading out to Allabout Squares home base Sunday morning

for a cooked breakfast and, if you can believe it, more dancing. “Everyone had a great time and the dancers from away have already booked in to be involved for our birthday celebrations next year,” Andrea said. Mount Gambier is fortunate to have Andrea as a caller – she is considered one of the best in the business. She has already recorded almost 20 songs for Shindig Productions, an online square dance music archive, and she was in Perth last weekend for the national convention, where she had a calling gig, as well, with four slots to call over the weekend.

Allabout Squares meets Thursday nights from 7pm and has around 25 regular members. “If you just want to come and have a god we would welcome that,” Andrea said. “You don’t need any experience. You don’t need a partner.

It is great fun for all ages, families, couples and singles and it is great gentle exercise. You can do up to five kilometres a night but it is all about the social aspect as well.” Anyone interested in giving square dancing a go should call Andrea on 0417 509 144.

MEMBER FOR BARKER HOLDS FIRST OF A SERIES OF COMMUNITY MEETINGS Member for Barker Tony Pasin hosted a successful community meeting in Nangwarry last week as part of his continued effort to ensure local voices are heard in Canberra. Nangwarry was the first town in a series of community meetings that Mr Pasin will be holding around the electorate. “I try and be as accessible as possible as I travel around the electorate. WORLD WAR ONE EXHIBITION HEADS TO PORTLAND A centenary touring exhibition will visit Portland next month to provide a unique glimpse into the lives of Victorians who served during the First World War. The Shrine of Remembrance’s Australia Will Be There: Victorians in the First World War (1914-19) exhibition will be on display at the Portland Arts Centre from May 1 to June 15. The exhibition will present the chronology of the First World War through historical photographs and personal stories, with particular reference to the contribution of Victorians. Glenelg Shire arts and culture manager Susie Lyons described the exhibition as a once in a lifetime viewing opportunity for residents.

“This free exhibition, which features over 100 historical photographs drawn from across Victoria, provides a fascinating insight into the lives of the many Australian men and women who served during the First World War, detailing their triumphs, struggles and sacrifices,” she said. “Frequently drawing on personal letters and diaries, the collection presents perspectives on both frontline and home front experiences, detailing the thoughts and reflections of those affected by the war.

This is a rare opportunity to view such a comprehensive and touching exhibition on the First World War in a local setting, so I urge residents to drop into the Portland Arts Centre between May or June to see the collection for themselves.” An official opening of the exhibition will take place on Tuesday, May 1, from 5.30pm, at the Portland Arts Centre, with all community members welcome. One of the Anglican Church’s top ranking officials enjoyed a whirlwind visit to the Limestone Coast earlier this month and could not have left more impressed with the work of the Anglican church and its members in this community. Dr Philip Freier, who has been Archbishop of Melbourne, since 2006, and Primate of Australia, since 2014, visited the region for three days, spending time with parishioners from Christ Church, Mount Gambier, St Thomas’ Church, in Port MacDonnell, and St Luke’s, at Mount Schank. “It was such a worthwhile visit,” Dr Freier, who is the head of the Anglican Church in Australia, said. “I got to see the energy of the South East of South Australia and the work the church is doing.” Dr Freier was briefed on the work of ac.care, the Bell Tower Op Shop and the members of Christ Church, also leading a prayer for world peace, on the Saturday morning in the church hall, and the Holy Eucharist, on Sunday – a service at which four people were confirmed.

Visits to Mount Schank and Port MacDonnell parish churches involved informal discussions, focussing on one on one chats with parishioners. “It was a rich and productive time for me,” Dr Freier said. “I have great admiration for the work the Anglican Church people are doing in the community, for the community, in that beautiful part of the world.” Dr Freier was joined by Bishop John Ford, Bishop of the Murray, during the three day mission. It was a busy weekend for the Christ Church parish, which also hosted a visit from Bishop Geomis Pastouris, from the Greek orothodox Church, who presided over a Greek Orthodox Service on Saturday morning of the same weekend. The bishop has been visiting Mount Gambier for 48 years with the Greek Orthodox Church in South Australia holding regular services at Christ Church to cater for the 100plus parishioners in this region. Bishop Patsouris met Dr. Freier and Bishop Ford during his visit.

EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN Love can have some unintended consequences at times and this weekend is one of those times. Mount Gambier born and bred musical theatre star Cristina d’Agostino met and fell in love with Jordan Pollard while working on the 2008 Australian production of Guys and Dolls and the duo has since tied the knot in Mount Gambier and returning to Mount Gambier this weekend, with their nine week old daughter in tow.

It means, Mount Gambier has become a home away from home for Jordan and means he is bringing his latest creative venture, which has performed to rave reviews in Europe and around Australia, to the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre stage, this Saturday night.

“It is certainly helped by the fact I’ve married into the family,” Jordan said.

“But in all seriousness, we love going everywhere with the show and we’ve been really well received.”

Jordan is the creative director and a cast member of The Tap Pack - a high energy, tap comedy show inspired by the infamous Rat Pack, which included the famous talents of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jnr. With dazzling performances on stage, dressed in slick suits and equipped with sharp wit, The Tap Pack is a modern twist on the classic Rat Pack.

“We are not trying to be American or Las Vegas in what we do, it has a distinct Australian flavour, with the Australian sense of honour,” he said.

Pack team, the chance to perform on a stage named after Sir Robert Helpmann was also a drawcard.

“He (Helpmann) was such a huge name in musical theatre in Australia,” Jordan said. “It will be a great honour.”

While it is the chance to watch some of Australia’s best tap dancers in action, The Tap Pack is so much more than two hours of tap dancing.

“We really mix it up,” Jordan said.

“We are trying to breathe new life into tap dance and we bring some colourful characters to the stage and some witty banter and I think it all works because we are such good friends,” Jordan said.

In some form or other, The Tap Pack has worked together on other projects over the years, and they bring with them a combined experience of more than 20 musical theatre productions between them. Jordan’s journey started at the age of five, when his mother, who was a dancer and dance teacher, started him in tap and jazz lessons.

“I didn’t quite know what I wanted to do when I left school and I had all that performing side of things behind me so I went with that,” Jordan said.

It started with Guys and Dolls and has gone from strength to strength, including A Chorus Line, West Side Story and The Addams Family. He has been seen most recently in the Australian cats of Singin’ In The Rain, which also had a six week season in Tokyo.

The Tap Pack, in fact, was born out of the volatility of the entertainment world, despite the fact, the guys involved, have been fortunate enough

to enjoy a steady career thus far.

“It was an idea we had in a bar about five years ago,” Jordan said. “We all know the industry can be tough and you have to wait by the phone for work.

This was our chance to have something of our very own. We were keen to modernise tap and do it in our own unique way. These guys I am working with are the best in the business and we are all on the same page and that’s why it works. We have a great friendship and I think people can see that on stage. We were three guys with a dream and we are lucky enough to be working on our own show.”

Being in charge of his own show, albeit on a smaller scale than the large scale musical theatre productions like Singin’ In The Rain, has been an eye opener for Jordan.

“When I go to work on those big

productions, you realise there’s more going on around you than you could ever know and there is so much to get a show up and running,” he said. “Now I have had a really good view behind the curtain and what it takes and I am even more appreciative. It might be a smaller scale but we are just as passionate.”

The Tap Pack designs and builds their own sets, creates their own costumes and works on the technical side with the lighting and sound checks.

The Tap Pack hits the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre stage this Saturday night at 7.30pm with tickets available from the theatre booking office or online.

COMPETITION WINNER ANNOUNCED TO NAME WHALE A Portland resident will boast bragging rights for naming the shire’s newest whale after being announced as the official winner of the Whalemail ‘Name that Whale’ competition. Sally Howard has been selected as the competition’s winning entry with her suggestion of Badu, with more than 70 names offered on the Whalemail Facebook page during the month long competition.

Badu boasts multiple origins, including Indigenous Australian for water and African American to describe one ‘who is strong and powerful.’ Winner Sally Howard said it was a happy surprise hearing that her suggested name had been selected. “It was pretty exciting to hear that I had won, after all it’s not every day that you get to say that you’ve named a whale,” she said.

As the winner of the selected entry, Ms Howard receives one night’s accommodation in the Corner Spa Unit at the Macs Hotel in Portland, valued at more than $220. “The prize of the accommodation voucher is an added bonus and it will come in handy during Christmas when I’ll be entertaining visiting family members,” she said.

“It will give me a chance to have a quick break and relax during the chaotic festive season.” The winning name was selected by the Portland Visitor Information Centre in conjunction with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to ensure the winning name was not previously allocated to any other identified and recorded whale. Locals and visitors are encouraged to catch a glimpse of Badu during the upcoming whale watching season during the months of June through to September. The webpage will allow users to access details of whale sightings in the area, including maps, dates, time, location and type of whale, details on local whale viewing platforms and a direct link to social media channels.

EZE HITS THE 200 GAME MARK IN STYLE It was in 2010 that Matt Sutton and Erik Burdon made the move to Mount Gambier. The duo became the foundation on which the Richard Hill championship dynasty has been built. They as close to local as any imported player and on Friday night, Burdon joined his championship skipper in the 200 club, doing it in style with a game high 29 points, including shooting 13 of the last 15 of the Pioneers points. Burdon plays a different role now than when he first joined the Mount Gambier franchise but long time coach Richard Hill could not speak more highly of the softly spoken sharpshooter. “In my first year he was one of our prime go to players, which is what he had been before I got here,” Hill said.

“His role has now changed and his shot attempts have diminished over that period of time but I think it’s allowed him to play his best basketball.

He is now a piece of our offence rather than the focus of the offence.” Burdon was the Allan Scott Medallist in Hill’s first season at the Icehouse and he is also a NBL championship player with the Perth Wildcats. Burdon has been part of the recent SEABL success at conference and national level enjoyed by the Pioneers and Hill believes part of that is the fact the players brought in, added consistency to the Pioneers line-up and were also players with which Burdon was familiar. And, as witnessed by fans on Friday night, Burdon is still an integral part of the Pioneers puzzle. “He brings an intangible – it’s great to have a guy that just goes about his business,” Hill said. “He has a calming influence on the whole playing group. He is a leader in a different kind of way and you need all those different kinds of personalities to build a really good team. Eze is a no fuss player and the players really respect him.” Burdon will certainly need to lead in the coming month as the Pioneers suffer their first real taste of missing personnel in Hill’s six year tenure. The club re-opened at the beginning of this year, in new premises at 14-16 Margaret Street, Mount Gambier, offering kids, teens and adult classes and currently boasts around 30 students. It is run by Victorian State title and Australian Masters title winner Matthew Grubb, who has now taken the plunge and dedicated himself to the sport full time, as a coach and athlete. Matthew has been training in No-Gi Jiu Jitsu since 2009, with the majority of his training taking place at 10th Planet, Melbourne, under head coach Frank Barca. Matthew has also trained in the United States and won his debut MMA fight. Not only has he won his own State titles as a competitor but he has also coached sidelined for a month, Burdon will need to be the voice of experience on court alongside the likes of Kyle Tipene and Kane de Wit. “We’ve had more injuries and players missing in the past week or so than I’ve had in my entire time here,” Hill said.

The Pioneers coach has been around basketball for a long time and at a high level so his praise for Burdon is gospel. “He’s a terrific guy and a terrific player,” Hill said. “He is a much better player than many people appreciate. I think he’s a better player than even he realises.”

SOUTH EAST FLAVOUR TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY Vice captain Molly Watson and star shooter Nyah Allen were key movers and shakers in the South Australian 17 & Under team completing a three-peat of titles at the age group in a high standard decider at the weekend.

Both former South East based players were part of the 2017 winning line-up as well.

Current Western Border rising star Jordy Adams was also part of the championship winning team, spending most of the week long championships at wing defence and goal defence.

South Australia got off to a slow start and trailed by six at the first change but a Watson interception on the second phase of Victoria’s first centre pass of the second quarter seemed to spark the SA girls and the tables completely turned as South Australia ironed out the first quarter wrinkles in offence and tightened up the efforts at the defensive end.

While Watson was rebounding strongly and also creating turnover ball, Allen was the reliable option in offence, finishing accurately and ensuring every turnover counted on the scoreboard.

SA was back on level terms by half time and then dominated the third quarter to set up a good lead heading into the final quarter, running away to win by 14 goals.

Allen was easily the most accurate on court and was identified as a player to watch in the match lead up by Thunderbirds coach Dan Ryan and defender Kate Shimmin.

The duo was also impressed with the work of Watson at goal keeper and there can be no denying she was a key factor in SA powering to the championship win.

Allen was named the grand final MVP, after missing only one, her first, shot for the match, with Watson named tournament MVP. Former locals Sienna Allen, Maisie Nankivell and Mary Wilkson were part of the 19 & Under South Australian line-up that lost the title decider to Victoria. They were all part of the 2016 17 & Under title winning team.

State title winners as well. Coaching has always been Matthew’s passion when it comes to jiu jitsu, which is why he made the decision last year to turn his hand to mentoring full time. The sport has been a part of Matthew’s life for almost two decades and he is looking to share his passion.

“Unfortunately there were no local opportunities to train in jiu jitsu when I first got into it and I’m hoping to provide that to a new generation of people and promote a healthier lifestyle for the youth of Mount Gambier,” Matthew said. The Mount Gambier Grappling Club teaches submission grappling and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu derived from a combination of collegiate wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, judo, Sambo and various other martial arts.

“The kids classes, concentrate on healthy living, movement, self defence and confidence and fun,” Matthew said. “We teach them to stretch, move and work with other kids, in a safe environment.”

The adult classes can cater for both genders and all ages. “They are for those looking for a new fun way to exercise, those looking for a self defence system that actually works in a real life scenario, or those looking to compete in either jiu jitsu or MMA,” Matthew said. Smoked salmon gnocchi 500g pkt potato gnocchi 300g sugar snap peas, halved lengthways 3/4 cup (185ml) thickened cream

1 lemon, zested, juiced 185g pkt Coles Tasmanian Hot Smoked Salmon Fillets Pepper, skin removed, coarsely flaked

Method Cook the gnocchi in a large saucepan of boiling water for 5 mins or until the gnocchi rise to the surface. Add the sugar snap peas and cook for a further 1 min or until bright green and tender crisp. Drain well. Return the pan to the heat. Add cream and lemon juice. Bring to the boil. Cook for 2 mins or until mixture thickens slightly. Remove from heat. Add the gnocchi mixture and salmon and gently toss to combine. Season. Divide gnocchi mixture evenly among serving bowls. CALL OUT FOR LIVE4LIFE FACILITATORS Youth based mental health initiative Live4Life Glenelg is seeking expressions of interest for facilitators to deliver both the Teen (TMHFA) and Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) training, particularly in the Casterton area. In just 12 months the community driven initiative has grown beyond its predicted capacity and additional volunteers are required to help provide mental health education programs to local secondary school students. Current Casterton facilitator Georgina Sweeney encouraged other local community members to take on the rewarding role.

“As a Mental Health First Aid instructor you help to raise awareness and reduce the stigma around mental health and play a vital role in the village that raises our young people,” she said. “In particular, one of the benefits of becoming an instructor is learning the skills and knowledge to assist colleagues, clients, friends and young people when they are experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.

We all know, or have heard of, someone that has had to deal with mental health issues; therefore it is such a valuable resource for our communities and families.“If you are looking for an opportunity to promote mental wellness and a happier, healthier community, here is your chance to make a difference.” Live4Life is an evidence-based, community driven response to youth mental illness. The program aims to increase the capacity for communities to support, improve and invest in their young people’s mental health and wellbeing and reduce the stigma around mental illness. Community members who are interested in undertaking the nationally accredited Teen and Youth MHFA Instructors course and becoming a Live4Life facilitator are advised to contact Cathryn Walder, youth development officer, at the Glenelg Shire Council on 5522 2137 or Rebecca Morecroft, project manager at Youth Live4Life Inc. on 0417 501 749. An expression of interest application process will apply. Facilitators may be required to deliver training during school hours, weeknights and weekends.

The Pioneers took almost three quarters to shake off new franchise Diamond Valley after a scrappy opening half, but in the end, despite missing key playmaker and captain Tom Daly, who suffered a knee injury during the week at training and will be sidelined for a few more weeks to come, and Majok Deng, who is battling a serious ankle injury, and Luke Jamieson, who was at his sister’s wedding, the Pioneers’ class shone through. That was no better epitomised than by a final quarter onslaught from the milestone man Burdon, who hit 15 of his game high 29 points in the final quarter, including 13 of the last 15 points scored by the home side. It was a breakout game for homegrown talent Kyle Tipene, who relished the extra court time and responsibility of ball carrying duties, in the absence of his skipper, and he finished with 22 points, six rebounds and nine assists. Lewis Thomas was also critical, especially in the opening quarter, where he picked up eight of his 15 points as both sides struggled to find any rhythm on offence. He also picked up nine rebounds and four assists. The lead was six at the first change and 15 by the half, with the home side turning for home at three quarter time with a 20 point lead. The Pioneers missed more than usual from the charity stripe in the 32 point victory, but with Diamond Valley converting a meagre three from 14, it did not end up being a costly stat for the home side. The Pioneers ended up winning all the key performance indicators, including field goal percentage, three point percentage, which was a health 42 percent, assists, steals and rebounds. Given this is the first time in coach Richard Hill’s tenure that the team has been hit so hard by injury to key personnel, the win was meritorious and for long time fans of the Pioneers saw the return of crowd favourite Chris Mason to the bench.

SECOND HALF ONSLAUGHT SECURES VICTORY FOR ROBE Glencoe has picked up its first win of the 2018 season with a solid 37 point victory over Tantanoola. Led by a best on ground, four goal performance from Tom Edwards, the Murphies surged home with an eight goal to one final quarter to snare their first premiership points. Reigning premier Mt Burr suffered its first loss for the season as a Ben Mules led Kalangadoo conjured a 31 point lead. Andrew Stone was in and under for the Pies, winning plenty of ball, while Lachy Jones and Matt Fatchen made the most of their opportunities hitting the scoreboard with eight between them. Key tall Henry Crauford was again impressive for the Mossies, while Josh Fiebig won plenty of the ball. The pain continued for Nangwarry as the Saints watched an opposition team again top the 40 goal mark.

Eagles veteran Matt Faulkner turned back the clock in a best on ground performance that saw him boot 15 goals, while Brodie Fabris booted nine, bringing his season total to 13. Youngster Justin DeJong battled hard for the Saints but it looks set to be another long season. A seven goal to one final quarter saw Robe pick up a 25 point win over Port MacDonnell. The Demons looked in control at the half, leading by five goals, but the Roosters came out a different side in the second half and 14 goals to six told the story.

Jonathon Agnew was a ball magnet and his use by hand and foot was as efficient as always, while Jake Wehl played his best game to help the lead the fightback. Big man Jake Turner, who finished the game with four majors, contested hard all day but once Robe got on a roll, the Demons had no answer.

Kalangadoo continues to dominate the Mid South East Netball competition, hitting the 90 goal mark against Mt Burr at the weekend. The Mossies had no answer for the scoring power of Melissa Russell and Abbey Duncan and with Jayde Peacock having an impact defensively and in attack, it was basically one way traffic. The clash between Glencoe and Tantanoola was a real arm wrestle but the Murphies were able to hold on for a six goal win.

Some hard running from Alyce Finnis in the mid court and some critical turnover ball created by Caitlin Liebich proved critical in the final washup. Despite strong performances from experienced campaigners Cassie Dinnison and Malinda Markiewicz, Nangwarry was no match for Hatherleigh the Eagles picking up a 23 goal victory. Lara MacGregor has had a stellar start to the season and she again impressed at the weekend, while the leadership of Helen Hamilton (pictured), especially in transition, where she consistently presented an option for team mates was also pivotal. BULLDOGS DOMINATE It was the first game under lights in three years and East Gambier certainly put on a show to defeat South Gambier by 17 goals.

On the back of the return of Sarah Lock to the court and accurate finishing from Tenille Gray (pictured), East took charge from the opening whistle. Bo Creek led the charge with a best on court performance, creating a number of turnovers with her willingness to attack the ball, while for South Gambier, shooter Georgia Hood was the focal point in attack and her second half, in particular, ensured South remained in the hunt. Millicent made light work of West Gambier in a high scoring contest that saw Demi Verbena dominating for the second successive week and Lisa Duldig continuing to prove pivotal in the mid court. North Gambier bounced back as expected with a solid win over the Cats, by 33 goals.

CATS LOOK THE REAL DEAL It has been a rare start to the season for North Gambier with the 2017 runners-up yet to register a win. This time it was the Cats, led by star recruit Will MacDonald, that put the Tigers to the sword. The key ruckman dominated around the ground, while Callum Currie was the leading goal kicker on the ground with six. Trent Nesbitt also won plenty of the ball as the Cats piled on 12 goals to one in the opening half to seal the victory. South Gambier is also winless after East Gambier claimed the points in the historic night fixture. 2017 grand final best on ground Jesse Fry (pictured) was at his hard ball winning best, while Alex Pfeiffer played his best game for 2018 with five majors.

The Demons shining light came from the Capewell brothers, Jack and Henri, who bagged seven of South’s eight majors between them.

The one sided contests continued with Millicent outclassing West Gambier at McLaughlin Park.

Led by a seven goal haul from Sam Willis and a dominant performance from big man Dylan Bromley, who bagged five, the Saints also scored 12 goals in the opening half to put the result beyond doubt.

SE BOWLERS CLAIM STATE COUNTRY TITLE The South East was right in the mix at the annual Bowls SA 2018 MGA Women’s Country Carnival held earlier this month. Six local bowlers reached the last 16 in the singles. Mt Gambier RSL’s Jenny Bowering and Val Anderson were knocked out in the second round whilst Liz Copping (Penola) and Heather Richards (Port MacDonnell) reached the last eight but were eliminated by Joy Bilney (Port MacDonnell) and Vicki Lehmann (Cowell) respectively. Joy Bilney and Di Murch (Bordertown) went on to play off in the semi finals but were defeated by Vicki Lehmann and Agnus Dhu (Crystal Brook) The eventual winner was Angus Dhu. Marj Richardson (Keith) and Di Brown (Naracoorte) were the only team to reach the knock outs in the pairs from this region but were beaten in round two. Two teams from the region reached the knockouts in the fours. Ann Ratsch (Kingston) lost the knock out in the second round but the team of Heather Richards (skip) Marj Richardson, Di Brown and Di Murch went through to win the Bowls SA 2018 Country Carnival MGA Fours against a team from Waikerie skippered by Judy Strauss.

WILD WEATHER DID NOT DAMPEN ENTHUSIASM FOR MASTERS BASEBALL The 12th annual Mount Gambier Baseball Masters event has been run and won. Held earlier this month at Blue Lake Sports Park, Mount Gambier, the competition attracted 11 teams for the three day carnival which ran from April 13-15.

Five teams travelled from Adelaide, two from Melbourne and four teams from Mount Gambier made up the two pools. Weather conditions were patchy at best and three games were abandoned due to the wet conditions - one early Friday and the first two games on Saturday morning. Over the three days, 25 matches were completed with Tigers 6’s, from Glenelg wining Pool A, returning to the tournament after a couple of year hiatus.

They won three of their four games and had a draw. Diamond Dogs, from Footscray, were champions in Pool B after they won four of their five games and also had a draw. Mount Gambier Legends President David O’Dine presented medals to all winning team members. The competition is organised and run by the Mount Gambier Legends Baseball Club. Sponsors of the tournament included City of Mount Gambier, Swallow Drive Butchers, Farmers Union – Iced Coffee, Bakers Delight, Limestone Coast Timber Floors Pty Ltd and She’s Apples.

VETS TENNIS MOVES INDOORS Ten South East Senior Tennis players enjoyed their first indoor event at the Active 8 Centre on April 15. There was no formal competition on the opening indoor day. The next event will be held on May 27 at Active 8 centre at the new time of 9am.
