Cara Service Manager Kylie Withers says Cara’s programs are already proving popular with the local community.

“The Kids Club was pretty much booked out last holidays, and the first camp earlier in the year was fantastic,” Ms Withers says.

“So many of the kids had never done anything like it before. They went kayaking, did tie-dying, went on bush walks during the day and at night and enjoyed campfires – especially roasting marshmallows! It’s got everyone excited for our next camp in October.

“We had lots of great feedback from the kids, parents and carers and we are becoming very well-known for our kids’ programs.”

That same personalised, enthusiastic support is also available for adults with disability, Ms Withers emphasises.

“We can offer 24/7 support which is very flexible, and we can work alongside people at home and in the community.

“We work with people’s interests, needs and support requirements, helping our customers to meet their NDIS goals.”

MILLICENT BUSINESS COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION AWARDS While children’s programs use fun games and other activities to teach new skills, there is an even stronger practical element to the adult support. Adult supports are personalised according to each customer’s priorities and often include things like grocery shopping, cooking, finding volunteer work or employment.

There’s also the Getaways program, which offers short breaks away in holiday accommodation for adults with disability.

One of Cara’s Developmental Educators is based in Mount Gambier to offer positive behaviour support and skills programs, and Cara’s specialist autism practitioner also works regularly in the region.

Ms Withers says she, and all of Cara’s staff are privileged to watch Cara’s customers learn, grow and thrive.

STUDENT RETURNS FROM LEADERSHIP TRAINING ADVENTURE Mount Gambier High School Year 12 student Sahra Rowhani-Farid recently attended a two week Aotearoa Leadership Tour in New Zealand run

by UN Youth Australia. UN Youth Australia is one of the largest youthled organisations, educating and empowering young Australians to voice their opinions and make positive change on local, national and global levels.

The Aotearoa Leadership Tour was a unique opportunity for 16 high school students (in years 10-12), to travel to New Zealand and engage with issues that fundamentally shape the relationship between Indigenous peoples and majority white states. “To explore these issues, we participated in workshops, attended consultations with community leaders, members of government and advocacy groups, and did a lot of personal study and reflection,” Said Sahra. “We learnt about topics ranging from reconciliation, all the way to exploitation and commercialisation of culture. The trip provided me with the skills, knowledge and passion to work as an ally with first nation’s people. It was such an eye-opening experience and I feel so honoured to have been chosen to participate in the tour.”

CLUB MERGER GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH WITH NEW SPONSORSHIP DEAL After nine years as a sister club to International Soccer Club, County Football Club changed its name to Inter CFC and formally becoming a part of International Soccer Club earlier this season. A few weeks into the new era, the partnership has been an unqualified success with International now looking to further develop their role in shaping the future of soccer for both boys and girls in the South East. The partnership was first developed under the watch of International stalwart Tony D’Agostino.

Tony took on the role of coaching the female senior team in 2008 and it was his dedication and success that forged the relationship between County and International in the first instance. Laurie Cella, whose family also has a long history with International, started with the junior team in 2010, through which it has enjoyed great success. Laurie has gone on to coach the senior team as well, taking the reins from International’s Dave Galloway at the start of last season. Joining the effort to strengthen International’s boys and girls program is Vince Versace, from Versace Home Builders. Versace Home Builders have been a major sponsor of International for more than 20 years and it is through their generosity that International has been able to develop and maintain the best soccer facilities in the South East. Versace Home Builders has now come on board with additional sponsorship for the senior and junior teams of the newly branded Inter CFC. Mr Versace has a long and proud history with International soccer, starting as a junior player in the Under 15s in 1971. CROCHET GURU TO VISIT MOUNT GAMBIER The Mount Gambier Library is thrilled to be able to host a day of events with crochet designer and teacher, Shelly Husband on August 18.

CHARITY BALL RETURNS Portland District Health’s charity gala ball will raise funds for a vital piece of equipment when it returns on October 6 after a seven-year hiatus. The charity ball at the Portland Civic Hall is returning for the first time since 2011, creating a highlight on the social calendar and raising money for a cardiac output monitor. A cardiac output monitor will cost about $20,000. This is a common practice in anesthesia and critical care. It is used as a marker of oxygen delivery to tissues and can identify patients at high risk of significant morbidity, mortality or both. It is also used in guiding treatment, primarily for fluid resuscitation and accurately measures cardiac output as an integral part of diagnosing and managing critically ill patients.

A community organising committee is planning the event, with support from PDH executive assistants Rachel Stoneman, Adele Curran and other staff.

“We want the community to be part of raising funds for this vital piece of

equipment, you never know when you, your family or your friends might need it,” Ms Stoneman said. The last charity ball organised by PDH was held in 2011 and there was strong interest in reviving it. “We’ve listened to our staff and community and now we’d love to see the tables booked ready for the event of the year,” Ms Stoneman said. “There’s a lot of enthusiasm about bringing it back and we’re looking forward to a great night out.” MC will be Portland-born actor Jackson Tozer and music will be supplied by Melbourne-based corporate entertainers Groove Star. Groove Star promises the biggest hits of our lives, performed like you’ll never forget, with a playlist resembling an iPod set to party mode, ranging from Michael Jackson to Bruno Mars, Etta James to Katy Perry, The Beatles to Avicii. PDH and community chefs are working together to develop a special three-course dinner, and a major raffle will be drawn on the night. “We want the community to be part of this big event which is sure to provide an amazing night of entertainment on and off the dance floor,” Ms Stoneman said.

IN THE GARDEN With spring just around the corner and buds starting to burst it’s time to finish all those end of winter gardening jobs. All pruning of roses, deciduous trees and fruit trees should be well underway, if not finished, and it is important to make sure you have applied a winter spray of lime sulphur straight after pruning to clean up any overwintering pests and diseases on roses that are not in leaf, fruit trees and ornamental trees.

Also on the important list is copper sprays (Liquid Copper in now available too) for stone fruit trees, such as peaches and nectarines, to avoid the attack of peach leaf curl, sometimes called curly leaf. If you had it last season you will definitely need to spray for it now as it does not go away if left untreated. Our sprayers have been going all day today as I write before the rain again, so ensure you do a few sprays, especially with all the rain we have had .

This is going to be more prevalent this year with the continuous rain in recent days when you only have that critical window in which to spray at “bud swell” and finding dry days to get sprays on is hard. All you can do is try your best.

The time for planting dormant deciduous bare rooted trees and fruit trees is also drawing to a close. Stone fruit and almonds and apricots are bursting into life so this week should be the last opportunity to plant these from bare rooted trees. With our massive winter sale on too this is a good time time to grab a bargain.

Potted trees are available all year round from places such as Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, so there is not the panic that there used to be in days gone by and often older, more mature trees are available too, so you aren’t missing out on fruiting time, but sometimes its still good to get them in with all the lovely rain to settle them in.

Now is also the time to be applying the first of the season’s fertilisers and with all this lovely rain should be easily washed in. This should be applied around the drip line of mature trees and fruit trees and around 30cm out from the base of roses.

At Limestone Coast Roses they have been having fantastic results with a new rose fertiliser that came on to the market a few years ago. It is now available to the home gardener as it was used mainly by us professional growers in the past. It has higher amounts of potash, so important for disease prevention and colour and quantity of blooms plus being coated with iron which is an added bonus in our predominantly alkaline soils, should make your roses the glossiest they have ever been.

Most of the bare rooted, deciduous, ornamental trees are selling out and as they burst back in to life we they will have to be withdrawn them from sale for potting on.

The national shortage of ornamental pear tree varieties continues but I am aware that Limestone Coast Advanced Trees in Mount Gambier has good stocks still, along with their exclusive evergreen variety “Wintergreen” which is ideal for screening and hedging. Claret Ash, nut trees, Lipstick maples, Chinese cedars and many other trees are all reduced to clear as we ready ourselves for spring.

End of season specials on mop top trees including Mop Top Catalpa reduced with

heavy reductions on Mop Robinias at two for $139.90 or $79.95 each - stocks are limited and at these prices they will sell fast. Seed potato and raspberry planting time is also upon us with good stocks of potatoes to keep to plant later or plant and early crop now.

SOUTH EAST ATTRACTS NATIONAL LANDCARE FUNDING

The Federal Member for Barker Tony Pasin announced the successful grant recipients in the Limestone Coast under the $5 million Environment Small Grants component of Phase Two of the National Landcare Program last week. “I am proud to congratulate the four recipients who will be receiving Australian Government grant funding to deliver natural resource management activities that will improve the quality of our local environment in the Limestone Coast,” Mr Pasin said. “Through the National Landcare Program Environment Small Grants opportunity, the Australian Government is investing $5 million, through one-off grants of between $5,000 and $50,000, in community projects which are delivered at

the local level but contribute to national environment priorities. The government is looking forward to working with the successful grant recipients across Australia to carry out projects that help to protect, rehabilitate and restore environmental assets in our communities. I am delighted to hear that our community members are taking up this opportunity to address the environment issues that matter most to them. We all have a role to play in natural resource management and we can all contribute to the protection and restoration of our local environment.”

The successful projects funded under the National Landcare Program Environment Small Grants range from invasive pest and weed management,

to revegetation and erosion control efforts.

LIMESTONE COAST ARTSISTS JOIN SALA FESTIVAL WITH EXHIBITION AT THE CHAPEL STUDIO Mount Gambier’s lakes precinct is the subject of an exhibition set to be officially opened this Sunday.

Drawing on Country - Where Art Meets Environment sees works from a variety of locally based artists centred on their interpretation of Mount Gambier’s iconic lakes area.

Deborah Rogers will be the guest speaker at the exhibition opening and the exhibition will be open from 11am-3pm from August 13-19. The Chapel Studio, which is hosting the exhibition, which is part of the South Australian Living Artists Festival, is located at 146 Suttontown Road, Mount Gambier. The exhibition will be officially opened this Sunday between 3pm and 5pm.

YOUTH MENTORING PROGRAM WILL CHANGE LIVES Developing a positive self-identity and being empowered to live the best life possible. That would be at the top of the wish list of any parent or carer for the young people under their care but just how to achieve that is where that dream so often fails to become a reality. The good news is there is help – professional help – through LifeChanger, a youth mentoring program founded by ironman legend Trevor Hendy and former AFL player and coach Scott Watters.

The program is set to be rolled out in the Limestone Coast under the guidance of Nathan Hayes, in the role of community lead and facilitator, and works around a Five Pillar Philosophy – health, self, skills, purpose and tribe.

It is aimed at 11-15 year olds and already has the backing locally of the Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers and the ANZ Bank through local manager Darren Wilson. Nathan’s credentials to head up the Mount Gambier pilot cover a wide range of skills, including experience in senior leadership in the education system, as well as consultancy work in the area of developing leadership capacity, team building and organisational culture. One of the key cornerstones of the program,

though, is community support, both through providing funding support for the program, which is offered at no cost to participants, as well as through mentorship, as the program looks to develop local faces to become leaders in the program.

LifeChanger has been around for 12 months and Mount Gambier is the first South Australian location to take on the youth mentoring opportunity and while it is totally independent of schools, Nathan intends to liaise with school leaders across the region to maximise the outcomes for the students who get involved, and to ensure it is the most relevant program possible. Mentoring sessions, as well as access to digital platforms, round out the five workshop program. The first way the community can get involved in LifeChanger and

find out more about how it works and what it is looking to achieve is the August 24 Golf Day & Dinner. Hosted by the Mount Gambier Golf Club and the Mount Gambier Pioneers, the Golf Day will also involve LifeChanger co-founder Scott Watters and ambassadors Robbie Kearns, a former Australian rugby league player, and Alice Kunek, an Australian basketballer, who currently plays for the Perth Lynx in the WNBL. The Golf Day kicks off at 10.30am and you can register your team of four today for $600 plus GST. Tickets are also available for the dinner only at a cost of $55. The dinner is from 5.30-8pm. PRESTIGIOUS RACE RETURNS TO REGION THIS MONTH Australasia’s top cyclists will test their endurance across almost 500km this month when the Campolina - Visit Victoria Tour of the Great South Coast returns to the region. The iconic cross border event, which runs from August 15-19, will start in Mount Gambier traversing across the border for three days of racing in the Glenelg Shire, visiting the communities of Heywood, Casterton, Cape Bridgewater, and Portland for a final showcase street criterium street party. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the return of the internationally recognised event was celebrated with a “race countdown” celebration last Friday.

“This is more than a bike race for our community - this is a major sporting event which benefits not only our region, but regional Victoria,” Cr Rank said. “This is our mini Tour de France, providing our shire with national media exposure whilst attracting the nation’s best international cyclists, their support crew and hundreds of supporter’s yearafter-year, providing significant benefits for our local business community.”

Council is a major partner of the event with neighbouring municipalities the City of Mt Gambier and District Council of Grant who will join for the

media launch. The 2018 event is jointly coordinated by Caribou Publications and Events, Cycling Australia and Cycling Victoria. Mayor Cr Anita Rank said council was pleased to have worked with the State Government to attract Visit Victoria funding for the seventh annual race, which was luring some of Australasia’s best riders.

She said 2017 race winner, New Zealander based-rider Brad Evans, 26, had confirmed his place and was eager to build on his past achievement.

“The event profile has grown to become one of the most highly anticipated on the national racing calendar because of its challenging courses and exciting sprint components, taking in some of the most impressive landscapes and seascapes in the country,” Cr Rank said. “More than 100 riders will use this event to further build their ranking on the national standings. Importantly, this year’s event will include a live broadcast on social media in addition to nightly news crosses to national broadcasters, showcasing our shire to a global audience.” Cr Rank said council was pleased to continue its popular final race day party on Sunday, August 19, which will this year feature a special display of local Penny Farthing enthusiasts. “We will be celebrating the final day of racing with a Bentinck Street party, with markets and the arrival of some Penny Farthing riders, showing how these giant bikes can compete against today’s modern designs,” Cr Rank said. “We encourage all of the community to come out and cheer along these talented riders and enjoy the spectacle of elite racing during our shire’s three days of competition.” .

FUNDING APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN Groups working to improve the health, education and financial stability of Glenelg Shire residents are invited to apply to United Way Glenelg (UWG) as it opens their funds for projects beginning in 2019. The UWG Community Fund will contribute almost $25,000 to groups working across the three areas of education, income and health in increments up to a maximum of $5000.

The UWG Community Impact Fund will contribute $8200 to one project working on a targeted area. This year that area is health. UWG will partner with an organisation seeking funding to implement innovative programs addressing prevention and early intervention for some of the Glenelg Shire’s most pressing health problems. Programs must be evidence based and sustainable. Partnership could extend beyond 12 months if measurable results are successful.

Monies for the Community Fund and Community Impact Fund come from local Workplace Giving campaigns, individual donations and donations from companies throughout the Glenelg Shire. The UWG Lewis Court Fund will contribute $41,685 to groups working in the area of encouraging positive aging for senior citizens through community health and wellbeing projects. Monies for the Lewis Court Fund come from the investment of monies from the sale of The Lewis Court Home for the Aged. UWG executive officer Nicole Carr encouraged community groups to consider applying for a grant from the fund most appropriate to their area of work. “United Way Glenelg fights for the health, education and financial stability of every person in the Glenelg Shire,” she said. “We are looking to invest in grassroots, collaborative projects that focus on innovative solutions for challenges within our community.” All three UWG funds are now open and you have until August 31 to lodge your application.

Now in its eighth year, Lucindale’s ‘Art in the Sticks’ has variously been described as a “Woodstock for artists”, and TYRES originally started when property owner and artist Hamish opened his gates and welcomed visitors into his art studio in 2011. It has now claimed a prized spot on the art event calendar and is always held on the October Long Weekend, which this year falls at the very tail end of September.

Titled Raw, this year’s headline exhibition will showcase WINDOW DRESSINGS eclectic works from a range of artists including paintings, custom sculpture, photography, jewellery, furniture, textiles and wearable art, which will be housed throughout unique exhibition spaces including rustic shearer’s quarters, shearing platforms, paddocks and next to a dam.

feature a rustic paddock to plate feast of local produce held within the ambience of the magnificent shearing shed.

Co-creators Hamish, and Christa Mlakar - along with the exhibiting artists - have this year increased the focus on live music, with a line-up including Kelly Menhennett, Archer and Matisse, and Jack Lane, along with Thomo and Julianne and jazz group Two’s Company, on Sunday.

According to Hamish, the weekend is designed for people looking to see and experience something different - which comes with a slow and relaxed vibe.

“Being the long weekend, it’s a great opportunity for friends and relatives visiting the region to head out to a beautiful grazing property and enjoy something different,” he said. “It’s a friendly, welcome, warm event, with Saturday having a more folky country style atmosphere with loads of creative activities including workshops and ‘ambles with artists’ on offer - against a backdrop of fabulous music.

Sunday’s focus is a bit more on the Farmers Fare lunch – with the accompanying jazz group Two’s Company providing a relaxing, smooth and mellow vibe for the day.

MID SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL LOOKING TO SECURE UMPIRING STOCKS INTO THE FUTURE WITH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The Mid South Eastern Football League Umpire Scholarship Scheme has been established to provide scholarships to young men and women an opportunity to become an umpire for the Mid South Eastern Football League in a supported and encouraged environment. The Board of the MSEFL has recognised that the current umpires panel is an ageing one and despite attempts to increase umpire numbers through various initiatives our current umpire numbers will be unsustainable in the near future. If the League and affiliated clubs want to continue with the current arrangement of independent panel members officiating at A Grade, B Grade and Senior Colt level we urgently require new umpires to the panel. The scholarship is available to young people, both male and female between the ages of 16 and 25. Up to two scholarships per year will be set aside for retired MSEFL players, however the number of scholarships awarded will be at the discretion of the MSEFL Board. The scholarship has been established to assist with incidental study costs, travel allowance and costs, assistance with training modules, allocated mentor to support and guide and uniform costs. Recipients may receive up to $2500 over a five year period and each scholarship holder will be required to meet key performance indicators and scholarship payments will be structured to reflect these as follows: • $300 to be provided on acceptance of scholarship and successful completion of the online AFL Umpire introductory course.

• $200 to be provided after umpiring 5 junior games within the Mid South Eastern Football League and completion of SANFL Basic Umpiring Course • $500 after umpiring 30 games at any level within the Mid South Eastern Football League and having attained Level 1 Accreditation.

• $500 after umpiring 45 games at any level within the Mid South Eastern Football League • $500 after umpiring 60 games at any level within the Mid South Eastern Football League and having attained Level 2 Accreditation.

• $500 after umpiring 75 games at any level within the Mid South Eastern Football League.

SOUTH EAST GOLF VETERANS Forty-four South East golf veterans tackled the Attamurra course on a fine but very cold day late last month with the local boy Rob MacIntyre having the best score of 38 points to win Division one, from Peter Delaine, of Robe, on a countback, and third was Brian Duldig with 37 points. Second Division was taken out by stalwart Colin Rex, with 37 points, from the wily old fox, Lyndsay Copeman, who had 36, and the evergreen Roy Mitchell came third with 34 points.

NTPs were Rob MacIntyre and Rob Carter and the Ross Orchard trophy was captured by Brian Norman and Keith Couzner. The ball rundown went to 29. One item of note was that Bill Cheers, on a strange course, and playing with locals, played a power fade from the 17th tee landing on the 14th fairway, and then proceeded to play to the 14th green, causing much mirth to his playing partners and ending with a wipeout. The next outing is at Naracoorte on August 13.

SPORT AT A GLANCE CONSISTENT CAT CELEBRATES 300 OF THE BEST “We are bloody lucky to have her.” That was the closing remark from Casterton Sandford Netball Club president Haylee Rhook at the weekend when club stalwart Trictia Cleary celebrated her 300th game as a Cat. And no one could argue.

She is the sort of person every club wants to not only have at their club but to be able to clone.

A quality player, who also coaches, umpires and assists with club administration – a jack of all trades who is, fortunately for the Cats, master of all. Not surprisingly, she marked her 300th game, all of which have been at A or A Reserve level, with a best on court performance. Trictia started her career as a junior in the Casterton and District Netball Association, before joining Sandford in the South West District Football Netball League as a 17 year old. It was there, under coach Barb Toma, that Trictia enjoyed

most of her senior success as a netballer, playing alongside respected players including Lois Lowe, Karen O’Connell, Tracie Layley and eventually Natalie Rhook (Fidler) and Haylee Rhook (Lowe), who she has also played alongside, and coached, at the Cats. It was the lure of playing alongside her sister Cindy that saw Trictia move to Island Park. She also wanted to allow her two talented daughters, both of whom she has played alongside over the journey, to test themselves in the stronger Western Border competition.

So in 1998, Trictia Cleary, officially became a Cat and it could be argued she is the face of the only Victorian based club remaining in the Western Border competition and she ranks as one of the most respected and admired players the association has ever seen. It is never about the individual accolades for Trictia but such is her consistency, and ability to play consistently at a high level, she has a trophy cabinet full of individual accolades. She is a 12 time club best & fairest winner, at both A and A Reserve level and has twice taken home the association top honour in 2008 and 2012 in A Reserve competition, finishing runner-up in the association count in 2002, 2011 and ’15 as well.

Team success has eluded Trictia at Island Park with the one goal loss to unbackable favourite West Gambier in the 2010 A Reserve grand final the closest she has come to that elusive premiership medal. This season could well be her best chance, with the Cats sitting atop the A Reserve premiership standings, in what looms, though, as one of the tightest grades come finals time. And while it was Trictia’s time as a Cat ion the spotlight at the weekend, she has also been a hard working Western Border official and was last year honoured for her nine years of service as records office, time as association secretary, role as the voice of the netball medal count for

HOCKEY TAKES A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE During the month of August the Lower South East Hockey Association will be celebrating hockey history month as it looks back over the history of hockey in the South East. The first recorded competitive game of hockey occurred

countless seasons and her representation of the league in masters competition, where the team won the State title, with life membership of the Western Border Netball Association. By her own admission, the quality mid courter, who is also a reliable goaler, is not one for sentiment, but even she was moved in the lead up to her 300th game. “I do not get sentimental at all really,” Trictia said. “But I have got so many messages this week wishing me all the best and it has been really special and made it more emotional than I thought it would be.” The affection with which Trictia is regarded across the association is reflected in the comments of then club president Judith Cameron and head coach Leanne Perry on

the occasion of Trictia’s 200th game and since then her reputation has only been enhanced.

“Trictia has been committed and dedicated to the Casterton Football Netball Club for almost 15 years and she has shared her skill, knowledge and enthusiasm as a player, umpire, coach, of juniors and seniors, and has been a team mate, not only with her daughters but with so many young players along the way,” they said, back in 2013. “Her work ethic at training is a testament to her and she is a fine example and asset to our club.”

Semi-formal competitions featuring both men and women continued until the Mt Gambier Women’s Hockey Association was formed in 1946. The Mt Gambier Men’s Hockey Association was formed in mid 50s and both competitions were amalgamated into the Lower South East Hockey Association in the late 70s.

The association will be celebrating its history by sharing old photos and match reports on both the Facebook page and website. The South Australian Field & Game Association held its Old Style Sporting Clay Championships at Rocky Gully Sporting Clays near Murray Bridge at the end of last month. Twenty-four competitors from the South East region nominated for the weekend`s 150 target event shot over six parcours.

Jeremy Kent used all his skill in the conditions to score a possible 25/25 in his final round to win the High Gun by three targets and become the State champion with a score of 139/150. Jamie Dunn won AA Grade with 136/150 from event co-sponsor Lee Berger and Jo Densley in third. Tim Widdison took out second in A Grade. Matt Jones shot well enough on day two to jump into second place in B Grade. Peter Klieve on the C Grade State championship by five targets, while Kevin Dyson proved consistency was key to taking out the Veterans State title with Janette Densley taking out the Ladies title. Day one had near perfect winter shooting conditions with no wind and a sunny 22 degrees for shooters to tackle each parcour which consisted of four clay traps throwing clay targets shot in a combination of singles and pairs from four shooting stands. It appeared that course five was causing some competitors some difficulty with some low scores coming in from that ground.

After 100 targets on day one, day two had 50 targets on offer in cooler conditions, however the wind played havoc with some targets, to add to the test of the shooters skills.

A reliable mid courter who never makes a mistake with ball in hand, hist sthe circle hard and has great vision into the shooting circle, Zena is a consistent performer for the team which currently sits on top of the Western Border Netball Association ladder.

Ruby is in her sixth season with the club and plays in the 15 & Under B team. She was part of the 2016 13 & Under B premiership team and played in last season’s 13 & Under A grand final. She was also part of the Western Border SA Country Championship winning 13 & Under team in 2017.

East Gambier 15 & Under A player Lucy Davis celebrated her 100th junior game as a Bulldog in round 14. She is already a premiership player, having been a key member of the 2017 15 & Under B grand final winning team and she is genuinely an allrounder, having played signifcant netball in goals, defence and the mid court. CREAN HEADLINES STAKEHOLDERS FORUM Growth opportunities in Glenelg Shire council’s agricultural sector will be a key focus of former opposition leader Simon Crean’s keynote address in Portland next month. Mr Crean will use his current position as chair of the Australian Livestock Exporters Council to highlight Portland’s growing position as a regional export hub at the latest round of council’s popular Development Stakeholder Forums. Mr Crean will headline a function at Clock by the Bay on August 9 from 5.30pm with key business leaders from across the region, highlighting the importance of business leaders capitalising on their strengths.

GOVHACK PROGRAM RETURNS IN 2018 Following national recognition of local ideas around the use of open data, the Mount Gambier Library is pleased to announce that it will host its fifth GovHack Open Data competition in September 2018. GovHack is run across Australia and New Zealand to bring people together to create new ideas and concepts using open data in just 46 hours of competition time. “Teams work together to come up with an idea on how to make data more accessible and interesting, such as phone apps, websites, games and even art,” library youth servicescCoordinator Terasa Nearmy said.

“It doesn’t have to be a working model, just a great concept.” This year the competition will run from Friday, September 7, until Sunday, September 9, and includes two age group categories. GovHack Youth Node is open to 13-18 year olds and GovHack Adult Node is open to over 18 year olds. There are prizes at three levels for each category; Local (Mount Gambier), State and National.

“The competition is judged on each team’s entry in the form of a three minute video recorded over the weekend describing the project; the data that is used, the idea and how it is made useable and accessible to the public,” Ms Nearmy said. The library extends its opening hours, supplies unlimited wireless access, free printing facilities and staff to assist throughout the competition as well as providing competitors with all meals. “Whether you are into cool geeky stuff, computer knowhow, storytelling, digital or social media dabbling, graphics and art, problem-solving, marketing or anything similar we want you to participate,” Ms Nearmy said. “We hope to see even more schools participating, with more students getting involved, more adults taking part and potentially more people from Mount Gambier scooping up prizes.” For further information please contact Library Youth Services Coordinator Teresa Nearmy at tnearmy@mountgambier. sa.gov.au Above - Grant High School student Braydon Eberhard (left) was awarded the Mount Gambier GovHack Spirit Winner in 2017.
