COVER • AN OUTBACK SPECTACULAR AND PLENTY OF OLD FAVOURITES The countdown is on to the 2018 Gambier Earth Movers Mount Gambier Spring Show. The October 19 and 20 event has another jam packed program with Heroes of the Outback, brought to you by Roof Top Express, headlining the 2018 event. It is a wild west arena show including horses, cows and dogs performing stunts, horseplay and cattle mustering all mixed with a bit of comedy - basically it’s got something for everyone, the kids, mums and dads and even for the staunchest of cattlemen. The Heroes of the Outback performances will be at 12.30pm and 3.30pm on Friday and 1pm and 8.30pm on Saturday. The performances will also include a meet and greet with the cast.

Another of the family entertainment events targeting families is James’ Travelling Magic Show, which will be presented daily at 10am and 2.30pm.

The Speed Shear Competition is also always a highlight and that will kick off at 4pm Saturday. The Ag Learning Centre will also be a hive of activity, with milking demonstrations at 9.45am and 3pm; baby animal feeding at 10.30am and 2pm; shearing demonstrations at 11am and 1pm and an aquaculture demonstration at 12noon – all sessions are daily.

There is also plenty on offer for those who want to get hands on with food, with free biscuit decorating with the girl guides, daily from 9.30-11am; 12,30-2pm and 3.30-5pm, as well as cooking demonstrations from South East TAFE, daily at 11am and 2pm.

CALENDAR COUP FOR WILDLIFE ARTIST

Renowned South West Victorian wildlife artist Brett Jarrett has added another string to his already impressive bow, with his painting of two kookaburras being the front cover image of the 2019 Australian Geographic Art Calendar.

Overall, three of Mr Jarrett’s works are included in the 2019 calendar which celebrates Australia’s best wildlife art.

As well as the kookaburra painting, his paintings of emu chicks and an

echidna are featured inside next year’s calendar.

Mr Jarrett is particularly pleased with his painting being the front cover picture of this year’s calendar, as the Australia Geographic has such credibility in the natural history world.

“My works have been included in the calendar three times previously, but this is the first time a painting of mine has featured on the cover,” Mr Jarrett said. “It is always a privilege to have my art included in the calendar, but to be featured on the front cover is extra special.”

The original painting of the kookaburras was purchased by an art collector and hangs in a private collection in Sydney.

Mr Jarrett’s wildlife art can be viewed at the Bay of Whales Gallery and Coffee Shop at 47 Liebelts Road, Narrawong on weekends between 10am–4pm, or during the week by appointment.

CASTERTON GARDENS SPRING TO LIFE FOR ROTARY EVENT Music, Art, Garden In Casterton (M.A.G.I.C) is brought to you by the Rotary Club of Casterton and will be held on Sunday, October 28. A biennual event, it features local gardens and the added enjoyment of art, music, food and market style stalls.

The 2018 experience will take place in the local rural community of Wilkin—a mecca of Australian bushland.

Situated 25km from Casterton and accessible from the Glenelg Highway, the focal point at Wilkin is the Community Hall, previously the local state school, and on the day of M.A.G.I.C will be alive with market stalls provided by local Friends of the Community roving market.

Feature gardens are owned and cultivated by the Cash, Sullivan and

Munro families; an eclectic choice which is sure to provide something for everyone. In addition, a wild flower walk will be included in the program.

Another feature will be Plein Air painting organised by local Artists of the Valley which will take place in the Munro garden, while the other gardens will showcase sculpture and various works by local artisans.

Plein air painting is about leaving the four walls of your studio behind and experiencing painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists.

Their desire to paint light and its changing, ephemeral qualities, coupled with the creation of transportable paint tubes and the box easel—the precursor to the plein air easels of today—allowed artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air.”

Registration/tickets available at the Wilkin Community Hall or Casterton Kelpie Visitor Information Centre on event day. Tickets at $15 per person enables access to any or all gardens from 10am—4pm. Plenty of catering will be available at the venues.

PENOLA GALLERY LAUNCHES NEW EXHIBITION Penola’s Gallery 54 is set open its latest exhibition this Sunday at 2pm.

The Church Street gallery is set to host an exhibition of the paintings of Julie Kent. Julie is an award winning artist known for her colourful, lively, soul lifting depictions of the world around her. She gains her inspiration from her travels, as well as her home in Sandford. The exhibition runs until November 26 and all works are for sale. TRAILBLAZER MAKES HISTORY Science class wouldn’t be considered a typical breeding ground for potential football goal umpires but

that’s exactly where Portia Holdman first decided to take up the craft. That was three years ago and at this year’s

Western Border Football League A Grade grand final she became the first female goal umpire to officiate in the flag decider.

The Year 11 Tenison Woods College student hasn’t looked back from deciding to take up goal umpiring and she would encourage others to consider coming on board.

“I was sitting with one of my friends in science class reading the school notices when we saw the ad for football umpires,” Portia said. “We looked at each other and thought it seemed like a good idea so we contacted Terry (Willoughby) and started to pursue it.”

Portia was a footy fan and she admits, initially the chance to make some money was arguably the biggest selling point. “It was a lot about the money at the beginning but I just enjoyed it so much and it is something I take really seriously now,” she said.

“I did think about playing but I would rather umpire than play.”

As for her first experience in a senior grand final – Portia admits she suffered very little from nerves and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity.

“It was a great game,” she said of the 2018 grand final. “I thought it was going to be a lot more stressful but I pretty much felt nice and relaxed. I was confident about all my decisions.”

Umpire training is twice a week during the football season and Portia, who is also tied up with her school studies and swag of musical commitments, always made sure she attended at least one.

“I am in three bands at school, including the rock band and concert band, so with rehearsals and

performances I have had to work my umpiring around a bit,” she said. “I am hoping to make a career out of music, whether it be as a teacher or getting involved with music through the army.”

Portia is equally committed to goal umpiring, though, and has not ruled out continuing down a development path that could lead to SANFL or even AFL opportunities down the track. Most of Portia’s friends are tied up with netball but they do sometimes head over to the football oval to see their friend in action.

For now, she is taking a break but has every intention on continuing into her fourth year of goal umpiring in season 2019. That will see her return to training where they do the running with the field and boundary umpires, as well as heading off on their own skills sessions, where they focus on positioning and perfecting their signals.

When Portia started goal umpire training three years ago there were three females in the umpiring ranks and that has now grown to seven.

BURDON BACK ON HOME SOIL Millicent motocross star Josh Burdon and his FactoryFMX freestyle motocross team have enjoyed a whirlwind 12 months with much of their time being spent overseas thanks to their growing reputation. To put Josh’s 12 months into perspective – when he was riding full time a few years ago, he did 100 shows and that was a huge effort. This time round, he did 200 shows just with his China contract and now he is heading into a super busy Australian program that sees the team basically booked through until next April. So after wowing audiences in Jong Kong and China, Josh is back on home soil and keen to get back to his grassroots fans throughout

Australia, and, more particularly, this region. He has already performed at the recent Kingston Show and this weekend, it is Naracoorte’s turn as the factory FMX team head to their annual show.

Josh is also looking to set up some street stunts in Mount Gambier in the coming months, as well as performing at the Bordertown Show. “It is great to be back doing the local stuff,” Josh said.

The team has also had further good news with Gordon Refrigeration, which is based in both Mount Gambier and Naracoorte, has signed on for a fourth year as a major sponsor.

CHARITY TRUCK PULL RETURNS Two Fennell Forestry B-Doubles will race head-to-head during the sixth annual Truck Pull Challenge on Saturday. An event-record 10 teams have registered to part in the event, with the new double-truck format devised to cater for the high level of interest. The Truck Pull is the initiative Mount Gambier harvest and haulage contractor Fennell Forestry and has captured the hearts and the support of many local businesses and community members since it started in 2013, raising more than $90,000 for children’s charity Variety SA. A lengthy list of generous local sponsors have pledged their support again in 2018, including major sponsors the Barry Maney Group and Trident Tyre Centre, both of which have been on board since the event’s inception.

The challenge will feature teams of six, a 100m course and for the very first time, two 23 tonne Kenworth B-Doubles, which will be pulled head-to-head along the track. It will be brute strength alone that pulls the truck and the unloaded chip trailer along the course and over the finish line. The action starts from 10.30am at the Glenburnie Saleyards this Saturday. Entry is free.

TOP HONOUR FOR HARD WORKING ATHLETE When you are one of 34 students from a nomination pool of 1600 to be selected for an award you must be doing something right and for Grant High School Year 11 student Charlotte Foote, being chosen as a Pierre de Coubertin Award recipient, is reward for effort – both in the classroom and on the hockey pitch.

The 16 year old was nominated by her teacher and then had to submit her own thoughts about an Olympic athlete that has inspired her. Charlotte chose Hockeyroo Jane Claxton – not a household name necessarily but Charlotte has worked closely with the Rio Olympian, who is still part of the national team, and it was Jane’s personal story and willingness to share it that touched Charlotte.

“Many people don’t know who she is but she has helped me a lot,” Charlotte said. Charlotte first met Jane in 2015 when Charlotte was part of the Under 13 South Australian girls hockey team. “I identified with her determination and her emphasis on hard work,” Charlotte wrote in her award submission.

Charlotte then recently contacted her idol again to be part of her school research project and also was able to tap into Jane’s expertise and experience to pick up some more career tips.

“Jane’s advice to me was that every athlete has their own pathway and mine might be different to my peers,” Charlotte wrote. “I was inspired by the fact that, as a child, Jane never made any State hockey teams, yet later she went on to captain Australia, overcoming numerous injuries and obstacles along the way. I realised that with hard work, anything is possible and anything can be achieved. Her advice has also helped me understand that everyone is on their own path and not to compare yours to others. Jane is an inspiring and down to earth player that has worked for everything she has achieved.”

It is Jane’s story that helped Charlotte put aside the disappointment of not making the South Australian Under 16 team in 2016 but bouncing back this year to be selected for that team, as well as the Under 18 team.

Charlotte was presented with her award last month by Australian Olympian husband and wife race walking duo, Jared and Claire Tallent, after attending the Olympic Academy Day held at the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI).

The Academy Day consisted of a tour of the facilities and the chance to network with, and talk about, Claire and Jarred’s Olympic journey, career obstacles, issues and mentoring. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn about leadership, goal setting and resilience from two of South Australia’s Olympic heroes.

Charlotte realises how lucky she was to be afforded the opportunity, especially given the strict guidelines for

award recipients.

Each nominee must play an Olympic sport and participate actively in their school’s physical education program with a consistently positive attitude.

They also must have represented the school in at least two competitive sports.

Named after the founder of the Modern Olympic Games, the annual Pierre de Coubertin Award recognises students who demonstrate academic excellence and sporting prowess whilst exemplifying the Olympic values.

Aside from Charlotte’s State

commitments in 2018, she also played her first full season with Port Adelaide in the Metro 1 competition in Adelaide and came home with a premiership medal. “I pretty much went up every weekend to play for Port Adelaide while still playing down here with my club West whenever I could as well,” Charlotte said. “Playing in Adelaide was all about having the opportunity to improve and my West coach, David Vine, really encouraged me to take the opportunity – even on grand final day, which clashed with the West grand final.”

Vine has also been instrumental in helping Charlotte work through training programs from both her Port Adelaide and State coaches. “He’s been a really good coach this season.” Charlotte said.

“And he has been able to help me with the feedback I am getting from my other coaches.”

Playing in Adelaide has exposed Charlotte to a whole new level of intensity and the first thing she noticed was the need for her to really up her game from a fitness perspective. “You also need to have really good ball skills,” she said.

Charlotte started playing hockey as a nine year old, basically because her sister played. “I hated it the first three years,” Charlotte said. “It wasn’t until I was top age Under 13s that I started to feel confident and loving the game. I basically kept at it because of the friendships and I think that’s why I started enjoying it.”

The dust has barely settled on her

Metro 1 premiership but the training is still a top priority with Under 18 State trials next month in a process that goes through until December. “Basically with all my hockey commitments I’ve had a month off this year,” Charlotte said.

Not that she’s complaining. She intends to take her hockey as far as she can and that is why she has her own training set up at home so whenever she has a spare minute she can be

working on her craft.

OLD FAVOURITES AND NEW EVENTS HEADLINE BYADUK SHOW Best Selfie and Funniest Photobomb are two new categories this year for the 2018 Byaduk Spring Show, in an effort to continue to improve the show for the community. The 112th Byaduk and Community Spring Show will be held on Saturday, November 3. Another new initiative is The Community Scarecrow Competition, which is a wonderful opportunity to get students from your school, kinder, education facility to team together to make a scarecrow. Prizemoney of $100 will be awarded to the winners’ nominated educational facility. Then there’s the popular champion chocolate cake, where there is $300 of prizemoney to be won. Committee member Jo Moore said last year the chocolate cake competition attracted cooks from ages 10 to 80 with 30 cakes entered.

Now in its second year organisers were hopeful many more cooks would whip up their favourite recipe. The traditional categories of cut flowers, roses, floral art and homecrafts, along with photography are also front and centre of the 2018 program, while a few new categories have been included with a decorated orange or potato category for primary school students and saucer of sprouted seeds for both primary and kinder children. The photography section has included Best Selfie, Funniest Photo Bomb and Funniest Farm Mishap. There is also a noncompetitive section with the i-garden Digital display. mages of gardens from across all seasons are being supplied to incorporate into a digital display to be run on the day. The new timing of the show has the doors opening at 11am, with stalls selling from that time, along with the official opening at 12noon.

“This year we are thrilled to be raising money for BlazeAid and a local Byaduk Community Project,” Jo said. “BlazeAid spent months here following the Gazette fires and helped and supported

The Sunday Motorbike Riders, from Hamilton, will be arriving at 11am and will have their motorbikes on display until 1pm. RECORD NUMBERS THIS WHALE WATCHING SEASON Community members, tourist advocates and whale watchers alike are celebrating the record breaking success of the 2018 whale watching season in the Glenelg Shire as the few remaining visiting whales linger in local waters. A total of 115 Southern Right Whale, 30 Humpback Whale and three Orca Whale sightings were reported off coastlines near Portland, Narrawong, Cape Nelson and the Cape Bridgewater area this year during the annual whale migration period during June to September. These figures have set a new record for annual whale sightings, confirming that it has been the busiest whale watching season in the shire yet.

Portland Visitor Information Centre visitor services officer Corey Williams, who is co-administrator of the WhaleMail Facebook page, said it was the support from the local community that had made 2018 the most successful year for whale watching. “Portland is certainly on the map as Victoria’s whale watching capital,” Mr Williams said. “We’ve noticed that the community has been more actively engaged and more eager than ever to report whale sightings, with daily notifications from curious whale watchers coming to the WhaleMail page. It’s just been fantastic to see the community taking full ownership. In particular, it has been the generous support from photographers and whale spotters that have really helped this whale season to be the most celebrated one. We have had many dedicated photographers sharing spectacular whale photos, which has really helped to build Portland’s profile as a whale watching capital.” Mr Williams said increased media attention and the launch of the new look WhaleMail website linked to Portland’s major tourism website www.iamportland.com.au had also contributed to the increase in notification of whale sightings and therefore public support.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME?… By ROBBIE TANSEL Have you ever thought that there might be something wrong with you?

Have you ever considered that you might be unusual, or even weird in some way? Well I had always thought that I was completely normal.

Until I met Donna obviously. Even then, she let me think I was normal for a long time. She acted like everything about me was great. It was only after I was more committed to her, after the birth of Shaquille, that she let me in on a secret she’d been carrying around for quite a while. She thought there was something wrong with me.

Prior to this revelation I actually had this theory that I was the most average person in the world, and this supported my theory that I was normal.

My theory was that I was actually the definition of average, or the mean, for all you Maths nerds out there. I believe that if you added up the height of all the people in the world, then divided by the world’s total population, that would match my height exactly. I believe if you did the same for weight, number of pieces of pizza eaten in my lifetime, number of times you’ve been overseas, or any other statistic you care to select, I would match that result exactly. Okay, I haven’t gotten very far with exploring this idea and I’m already starting to think there’s something wrong with me.

What Donna has particularly identified is some unusual patterns of behaviour I’ve developed during my time on Earth. I’ve thought about these lifestyle1.net | 24

patterns of behaviour and come to the conclusion that I actually use them to avoid having to make decisions. I don’t like having to choose between things, be they food options, activities to be undertaken, places to go, or anything else. If I create rules and routines that guide decisions, then I actually don’t really have to make any choices. I just follow my rule. Reading this now, I can’t believe I didn’t realise there was something wrong with me years ago.

Let me give you some examples.

In the morning when I get out of bed, I have a morning routine. Out of bed, number two (overshare, sorry), breakfast while reading the paper, brush teeth, shower, get dressed, do hair, make lunch, shave, put contact lenses in, pack bag, fill pockets (I’ll come back to this), depart for work.

Getting back to that pocket thing (boy that was quick) in my pockets I must have my wallet, my phone, two sets of keys (work and not work), a handkerchief, two different Bic four colour pens, and a business card holder.

I say that I must have them, because if I don’t have any of these items, there will be a coordinated and planned response. I will call or text Donna, telling her of the absence of an item from my pockets. I will ask her politely to look in the locations where the missing item

is likely to be, and also to deliver it to work if she finds it. As much as this may inconvenience her, she will still nicely do it as she knows it will be best for everyone if she can find and deliver it. Otherwise I will spend the day in an agitated state and this may impact on other people’s days.

My rules and routines continue throughout the day, all the way to the end. I finish the day by going to my wallet and getting all of my coins out.

Initially I remove everything except for no more than one two dollar coin, one one dollar and one fifty cent which I leave in my wallet. Of the coins that I take out of the wallet, one of any coin can go into my main loose change money box. The rest of the money is divided as equally as possibly with the most money going into Shaquille’s money box if it’s an odd numbered day or into Lebron’s on an even numbered day. Did I mention that I have two money boxes for both Shaquille and Lebron, one which holds their gold coins and one for silver ones. Having done this I then put the lowest coin that I’d left in my wallet into another money box (hopefully you’re keeping up and will recognise that this money box only has two dollar, one dollar and fifty cent coins).

LENDING A HELPING HAND

In 2018, the magic number for the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group is 200. In almost two decades of fundraising, they have topped the $200,000 mark and this year also marks the 200th Helping Hand Bag being handed out to ease the burden on local patients and their families.

The group was formed in 2000 by Mount Gambier’s Leanne Kosch and Tantanoola’s Kay Holloway, and initially the major fundraising for the group was a luncheon at the Commodore on the Park.

In recent years that has evolved into a cocktail party but the aim has remained the same – to carry on the outstanding

work started by the inaugural committee, to continue to support women going through breast cancer and to raise much needed funds for associated medical and support services.

The 2018 cocktail party is this Friday night – Pink Party in Masquerade – and there are limited tickets still available from Gambier Real Estate. Hosted by the Commodore on the Park, which has always been the unofficial home of the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Support Group, the $55 a head function includes entertainment from DJ Brett Mashado, a Redgum Fashion Parade, a glass of champagne and canapes on arrival and a

prize for the best masquerade.

The Helping Hand Bags are again the focus of the fundraising, with some funds also being set aside for the maintenance of the recently installed lymphoedema machine at the Mount Gambier Hospital – another project the group has thrown its support behind in recent years.

The $200,000 already raised has been filtered into a number of diverse areas, including the Millicent Hospital Chemotherapy Room, Mount Gambier Hospital, Mount Gambier Women’s Health Program, Mount Gambier Cancer Support Group, Greenhill Lodge, Hanson Institute, Flinders Medical Centre, Calvary Hospital, the Cancer Council SA and the Breast Cancer Network Australia.

The Helping Hand Bags were an initiative of Maria Knightly in 2012, providing financial support to women with breast cancer and contains vouchers for fuel, groceries, meat and pharmaceuticals, all purchased from local businesses, as well as some much needed luxuries including massage and lingerie vouchers.

How many of us simply glance at the pamphlet we are handed about those side effects or simply pop it in the nearest drawer? We never think it will happen to us but sometimes it does.

Dulcie Hoggan – a breast cancer survivor knows that all too well. “When I was diagnosed with breast cancer and went to see the breast care nurse, I was given a bag with three booklets and one of those was on lymphoedema but I never thought it would happen to me,” Dulcie said. That was until it did.

It was when Dulcie was set to make history as the first patient to undergo radiation treatment at the South West Regional Cancer Centre, in Warrnambool – the centre set up by Vickie Jellie, who spearheaded a community fundraising initiative called Peter’s Project, in honour of her late husband, earning her the 2017 Australian Local Hero of the Year accolades.

“The week before my first radiation treatment I was at the centre getting measured up for the treatment and when I was in the machine being lined up my arm was swelling,” Dulcie said.

It was her first sign of lymphoedema and she was sent straight to the lymphoedema nurse. It is a cruel side effect of breast cancer surgery, where the removal of lymph nodes – Dulcie had 23 removed under her arm – can cause this swelling and discomfort, which, at this point in time, is a permanent condition.

It sees Dulcie faced with a lifetime of managing the condition through drainage, massage, compression garments and a raft of exercises and other tricks of the trade.

And then there’s her precious grandson, who just might have the kind of determination needed to tackle lymphoedema head on. “We were driving back from Melbourne the other day and he just turned to me and said, ‘I am going to become a doctor Nan and fix what’s wrong with your arm,’” Dulcie said. “He’s only four so I’ve got a bit of a wait but maybe he will, maybe someone will – you never know.”

Dulcie’s breast cancer journey started on October 1, 2015 – the day of her diagnosis and also her daughter-in-law’s birthday. “At least this year I was able to bake her cakes and biscuits and we could do what you are supposed to do on birthdays,” Dulcie said.

Back in 2015, it was surgery in Warrnambool and then a six month

chemotherapy course in Portland before the radiation treatment in Warrnambool that eventually resulted in her lymhpoedema diagnosis.

Heat seems to be the worst trigger for Dulcie and her lymphoedema so she sometimes has to basically use water to soak her right arm, the limb affected by the condition, and she also swears by her regular sessions in the pool where she gets in so the water is covering her shoulders and walks around.

“That has worked really well for me as well,” Dulcie said. “It is just about keeping it (lymphoedema) managed – it’s never going to be absolutely perfect.”

Flinders University’s Professor Neil Piller has also been instrumental in Dulcie’s management of her condition with breathing exercises that have really been effective.

“We have also been very fortunate in this community to have raised the money for the lymphoedema machine at the Mount Gambier Hospital,” Dulcie said.

That is a project the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group has focussed on in recent years, and while the group’s Helping Hand Bags are always a priority, money from this Friday night’s annual fundraiser, the Pink Party, will also go towards the maintenance of the machine.

Shelley Blachut, a physiotherapist at Therapy for Life, has also been a lymphoedema practitioner in Mount Gambier for the past 12 months and that has also helped Dulcie and other local sufferers better manage their condition.

One of the issues for lymphoedema patients, as it is for anyone with a long term or serious illness or condition, is the financial strain of treatment and lymphoedema is not a cheap condition

to manage, especially the compression garments, which until recent efforts from Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell, were not subsidised in South Australia, as they are in other States. cont. page 28

Lymph nodes are glands that filter and drain fluid that circulates around the body. They are located through-out the body, including in the breast and armpit (axilla).

Lymph nodes are often removed during breast cancer surgery. Sometimes they are damaged by radiotherapy. When lymph nodes are removed or damaged, the natural flow of fluid from your breast and arm can be restricted. When this happens, swelling occurs and it is called lymphoedema.

SOME BATTLES NEVER END FROM PAGE 27 Dulcie was the one who brought it to Mr Bell’s attention and only last month did he get parliament to agree to the introduction of a subsidy scheme.

“Lymphoedema is a chronic lifelong condition that requires the use of compression garments to make daily life more comfortable,” Mr Bell said. “The cost of these garments can range from $200 to $3500 a year - a significant cost burden upon people recovering from cancer. This State subsidy scheme for lymphoedema compression garments, is essential to ensure the thousands of South Australians that live with this condition can access this important treatment and are financially supported.”

Dulcie was also quick to praise the Helping Hand Bags, which are filled with vouchers for everything from fuel and food to massages and lingerie.

As of this year, the Breast Cancer Awareness Group has handed out 200 of these life changing bags and combined with the unwavering support of Breast Care Nurse Margie Atwell, who is a McGrath Foundation nurse, local patients are well supported through what is a difficult time.

“Margie (Atwell) was fantastic the whole way through and I have stayed in touch and she even supported me through another recent surgery that had nothing to do with cancer – she’s amazing,” Dulcie said.

MANAGING LYMPHOEDEMA There is no known cure for lymphoedema but there are ways to manage it. Management options include good skin care, gentle exercise, lymphatic drainage massage and the use of compression garments on the affected arm.

These treatments are designed to reduce and control swelling, improve your range of movement and prevent infections.

BE BREAST AWARE Finding breast cancer early provides the best chance of surviving the disease.

Remember you don’t need to be an expert or use a special technique to check your breasts.

Changes to look for include: • a new lump or lumpiness, especially if it’s only in one breast • a change in the size or shape of your breast • a change to the nipple, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion • a nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing • a change in the skin of your breast such as redness or dimpling • an unusual pain that doesn’t go away.

Most changes aren’t due to breast cancer but it’s important to see your doctor without delay if you notice any of these changes.

MOUNT GAMBIER TO HOST INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CONFERENCE Mount Gambier is set to play host to some of the best minds in medical education from October 15-18. The Muster 2018 in Mount Gambier is the sixth international conference jointly hosted by Flinders University and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

It is a conference that brings together an international audience to explore and discuss community engaged medical education, social accountability in health training and rural medical education and the 2018 theme is centred on Empowering Communities – Expanding Futures.

Held every two years, the conference moves between Australia and Canada and with 2018 being Australia’s turn and with Mount Gambier, through its strong working relationship with

Flinders University, being a beacon of rural education in the field of medicine, it seemed the natural fit.

Flinders University Rural Health South Australia’s Dr Leesa Walker (pictured above) said the university really wanted to showcase what is being done in this region.

“We are bringing together world leaders in community engagement and education,” Dr Walker said. “Given the focus of the conference is rural and regional areas, we really wanted it to be hosted in a regional area and where there are programs in place that are best practice. It is about training a health workforce for the community, providing a workforce that is the right fit for a community.” Indigenous community and health will also be a key lifestyle1.net | 30

Dr Paul Worley (pictured bottom left), Australia’s first National Rural Health Commissioner, who was appointed almost 12 months ago, headlines the impressive list of keynote speakers. “We want to make sure that health outcomes are not affected by what postcode you live in,” Dr Walker said. Guatemalan based expert Dr Walter Flores will also bring his thoughts on advocacy around issues affecting indigenous population health rights and other marginalized populations.

Around 50 percent of registered participants for the 2018 Muster are international, and the conference also has a strong focus on students, with many of the 326 already registered for The Muster falling into that category.

“We have a strong representation from students and not just Flinders University students but students from universities across Australia and international,” Dr Walker said. “We feel it is important to have the students’ voices at the conference and we value their input.”

Canada, the Congo, Iceland, Malawi, Nepal, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States will all be represented in Mount Gambier

this week. There will also be some presentations delivered in French, given the partnership with Canada.

“These type of events are so inspirational for our future work,” Dr Walker said. “It is also good to be able to showcase this region, and also the work being done here and a number of locally based speakers will be sharing stories from this region.”

In fact the entire State of South Australia will be showcased with preconference events in Broken Hill and Kangaroo Island allowing registered participant to see other parts of SA at those locations and in transit to Mount Gambier for the October 15-18 event.

Dr Walker singled out the efforts of Robyn Stafford in ensuring The Muster will be a well-oiled machine.

“She has been the major organiser of the conference,’ Dr Walker said. “The success of the conference will be her success.”

The Muster is using inner city locations including the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, The Main Corner, The Public Library, Mac’s Hotel, The G and the Gala Dinner will be held at The Barn.

“We thought it was important to be based in the city centre and give people the chance to get out and explore the city,” Dr Walker said.
