CWA VICTORIA TURNING NINETY The Country Women’s Association (CWA) in Victoria is turning 90 this year and celebrations are being hosted in this region with the Dunkeld and District Branch in charge of the celebrations on behalf of the entire Henty group of branches. This Sunday a high tea will be held from 12-3pm with fashion through the decades set to be revisited, historic memorabilia on display as the history, especially the charity work, of the Victorian CWA set to be in the spotlight. It’s free to attend and open to any past, present and future members of the CWA who want to connect with others across the district or learn more about becoming involved. The Dunkeld branch is a group bucking the trend, with a membership that has an average age in the mid-30s, after restarting again a few years ago.

CIVIC LEADERS READY TO HIT THE GROUND RUNNING Her first official meeting is Thursday this week and newly elected Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin is looking forward to hitting the ground running and tackling what she knows will be both a challenging and rewarding time.

“It was overwhelming and humbling to receive the support I received from the community,” Mrs Martin said. “The learning curve will be steep but I’m sure the help will be there from those within council and I’m looking forward to working with the council employees and the council to continue work already started and to implement fresh ideas and new projects going forward.”

Entering the mayoral race with no local government experience can often generate criticism, but Mrs Martin was able to demonstrate her civic leadership credentials following 11 years as head of the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce. “During that time I dealt with all levels of government and the Chamber of Commerce particularly forged a close relationship with the City of Mount Gambier to our mutual benefit and I think I do have an understanding of the structure but I do know there are still plenty of procedures and protocols to wrap my head around.” The newly elected council went back to school last week with an education and information session but Mrs Martin and, especially the new faces on the council, realise that was just the tip of the iceberg. The newly elected council is split evenly between new faces and those that have served before and Mrs Martin believes this will

be a good mix. “You have the knowledge of those that have been in council but also the new ideas and different perspectives of the new councillors,” she said. Christian Greco, Sonya Mezinec, Frank Morello and Steven Perryman represent the experience in the group, with former mayor, Steve Perryman, having by far the most experience of the eight person chamber with the other three returning councillors having served only one term. Ben Hood, Max Bruins and Kate Amoroso are the brand new blood, while the X factor is Paul Jenner, an experienced councillor returning to the chamber after an extended absence.

“I am just looking forward to some really positive outcomes for Mount Gambier,” Mrs Martin said. Her rise to the city’s top job has seen Mrs Martin step away from her Chamber of Commerce role and the interim president is Biddie Shearing, who will hold down the post until the August 2019 AGM. “I am mindful of the fact of keeping that seat warm for too long and I think it was good timing to hand over the reins,”

Mrs Martin said. With the postal survey set to be posted out at the end of this month, with the results expected mid January next year, Mrs Martin knows the Community and Recreation Hub will be top of the agenda initially for the new council. “There is certainly still some conversations to go on there,” she said. She ran on a platform that had an economic and tourism focus and that is certainly also near the top of the new mayor’s to do list. “I really want to champion tourism – that is certainly a growth industry,” she said. “We have such a lot to offer. We are a unique destination and we want to promote that. Tourism provides opportunities for emerging business and therefore more employment opportunities and that all grows the economy. We really have to expand on our experiences so that people stay here longer and that is going to take investment from the private sector and government funding.”

Community health and wellbeing and the projects around that space that have already been undertaken by council

are also front of mind for Mrs Martin.

“A healthy community is a vibrant community,” she said. And she is also set to hold the Marshall State Government to account on its election promise to work more closely with the regions. “As South Australia’s second largest city I think that is really important and it is important to maintain that position by growing the population,” she said. Aware a city growth plan already exists, the new mayor has always been a believer in decentralisation. “With the connectivity we have these days, businesses can be based anywhere and we want them based here,” she said. “Add to that the affordability of living here and I think it’s a great attractor and a great way to grow our population.” The grey economy – retirees looking for a place to spend their twilight years – and the attraction and retention of young professionals and their families are also areas of focus for the new mayor. A project she has already started tackling in her role as Chamber of Commerce president is the activation of the main street and

ensuring the CBD, which already has the value of the stunning garden precinct, becomes a more vibrant, engaging space. “That will require collaboration between the Chamber of Commerce, council, the real estate agents, landlords and other key peak economic bodies.”

Of course, the new mayor and council will also face a new challenge in the new year with the departure of current CEO Mark McShane. “That will certainly be challenging but like all challenges, will bring new opportunities as well.”

FULL DETAILS AVAILABLE FOR COMMUNITY HUB PROJECT Mount Gambier City Council is on a mission. It started earlier this month at the Library Markets and will continue at events and venues across the city for the next few weeks. With all the critical information in regards to design and costings now at their fingertips, the campaign has begun to ensure everyone in the community understands just what the Mount Gambier Community and Recreation Hub project is all about.

“We just want people to be informed,” community wellbeing general manager Barbara Cernovskis said. “We want to make sure they know what it is they are voting for or against.”

That community survey, which is set to go to just over 19,000 people on the electoral roll, will be posted out at the end of this month and must be returned

by December 21, with a result expected some time early in the new year. “ We are not trying to sell anything,” city growth general manager Judy Nagy said. “We have always consistently said, right from the start of this process, that we needed to wait for all the facts, all the figures, all the information and now we have the information.”

The $15million already garnered for the project by Member for Barker Tony Pasin is contingent on majority community support in the upcoming poll and that majority support is also what Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell is waiting on before he steps up his bid for the State Government to tip in an equal share.

The council stall at the Library Markets saw the four representatives run off their feet for three hours as people clamoured to find out more.

Council staff have also visited residents and businesses in the Olympic Park precinct to give them the first briefing given their close proximity to the proposed recreation and community hub. “Overall it was a relatively positive response,” Ms Cernovskis said.

Not only is council prioritising getting the information out into the community and answering the queries and concerns of residents, they are keen to be the ones putting in the leg work.

“People don’t have to come to us,” Ms Cernovskis said. “We are trying to go out to them and make it easier for people to come across the information and ask their questions.”

That included the Party in the Park at the weekend, a permanent information site set up in Commerce Arcade, in the former Bupa outlet, open 12-2pm weekdays and Saturday mornings, as well as offering up council staff visits to schools, businesses, service clubs and community groups, on request. That is in addition to the ‘Have Your Say’ website and social media platforms, where all the project information is available, with options for posing your questions and concerns, as well as information packs, which contain comprehensive plans and fact sheets to help in the decision making process.

“We are getting an increasing amount of traffic through that (website) and

people are downloading information which is good because it shows they are seeking information and want to be informed,” Ms Cernovskis said.

There will also be a public meeting on November 21 at 7pm in the City Hall, while council staff and members of the community reference group will be out and about in clearly marked black t-shirts so you know who to tackle with any of your queries.

The community survey is being administered independently.

Balnaves winemaker Pete Bissell has been crowned the 218 Winemaker of the Year at the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology (ASVO) Awards for Excellence last week. It is a story now littered with industry accolades, and the ASVO Award for Excellence Winemaker of the Year adds to an already full trophy cabinet for Pete, himself, and the Balnaves brand.

It was a deserving accolade for a quiet achiever who has been a champion of the wine industry and of Coonawarra for many years. Pete is a foundation member of the Limestone Coast Wine show, Chair of the Limestone Coast Grape and Wine Council, and a member of the Limestone Coast Technical Committee, which coordinates the delivery of research and extension activities in the region. Pete is the lead author of the red winemaking chapter of Australian Winemaking and with an eye for the future of the region, Pete worked closely with many wine industry groups and stakeholders to present various regional wine industry concerns on fracking, to the SA Parliamentary enquiry into Unconventional Gas in the Limestone Coast in 2016. Since graduating from Roseworthy and gaining first-class honours from the University of Canterbury, Pete has made wines for several companies and has gained international experience including time spent in Bordeaux, the South of France and Moldova. Pete has completed 38 vintages including the last 30 in Coonawarra, has been a wine show judge since 2000 and has judged at numerous wine shows across Australia.

“Pete has been a keen innovator both in the winery and the vineyard and is eager to share his knowledge.,” award selection committee chair Wendy Cameron said. “He has also been involved with the development and commercialisation of berry sorting equipment that provides considerable cost advantages. These qualities encapsulate the ASVO Winemaker of the Year Award.”

Bellwether Wines’ Sue Bell was the last Limestone Coast based winemaker to receive the accolade – that was back in 2014.

NATIONAL AWARD FOR YOUNG LOCAL INNOVATORS Mount Gambier teenage trio Lilli Fulwood, Elly Bachmann and Dale Bachmann received top honours at the GovHack Open Data Competition National Awards taking out the Best National Youth Team award at the red carpet event held in Sydney earlier this month. The local GovHack Open Data Competition was held at the Mount Gambier Library on the weekend of September 7-9. During 46 hours of

competition time, 45 youth and adults competed simultaneously with other teams across Australia. Competitors were required to come up with a concept to make open data more accessible to the public, with ideas such as apps, games, websites and art.

The concepts were judged on a three minute video promoting the working model of each idea. Local youth team ‘Bachmanns and Fulwoods’ comprised of Lilli Fulwood, Elly Bachmann and Dale Bachmann created the project ‘Backwards and Forwards’, an interactive history board game based on South Australian figures. The project was judged as the best youth entry in Australia. “This is an exceptional achievement and shows what the youth of Mount Gambier are capable of,” library youth services coordinator Terasa Nearmy said. “The fact that their concept stems from a board game, and that they only had three team members, proves that anyone can take part in the GovHack Open Data Competition with the only limitation being their imagination.” In addition to the national win, the teens also took out the local youth award and were

runners up at State level in the category City of Adelaide – the place to live, work and play. Lilli Fulwood received a ‘golden ticket’ and was flown to Sydney for the national awards event with her mother, Fiona. “The competition was an awesome opportunity to work as a team with the assets and time limits given, to create one goal,” Lilli said. “The outcome was so much more than a board game, it left us with memories, stronger friendships, and a desire to use the tools around us to invent new ways of using old things.” Mount Gambier teams also received honourable mentions in two prize categories. Team ‘Just We Three’ were recognised for their project in the prize category Protecting Our Carers. Their concept ‘Connected – Councils Connecting Community’ is an interactive, self-serve kiosk that links residents and new arrivals with community groups, clubs and support services in their local area. Team ‘Opt1c N3t’ received a honourable mention in the prize category On Your Marks, Get Set, Start Up for their project ‘New Age Business’, an app based concept that will help people create or grow their small business.

CHRISTMAS ARRIVES IN MILLICENT Millicent Lights Up is a great family event that welcomes in the Christmas season. CHRISTMAS STREET PARTY RETURNS After a year’s hiatus the Millicent Christmas Street Party is returning this year with community radio station 5THE FM taking on the hosting role and moving the event from George Street to the station’s Railway Terrace property. Station manager Sheryl Lowe is hopeful many George Street businesses will set up stalls at the December 15 event, with interest already high on rejuvenating the popular family event. Any business, community group or individual interested in setting up a stall as part of the market vibe should contact the station direct. “We certainly don’t want the George Street businesses to miss out just because the location has moved,” Ms Lowe said. Starting at 3pm, the event will feature live music from local performers, including member of the Congolese Choir, and will also see a live nativity performed by the Lutheran Church at sunset, which will see a newly constructed stable and live animals as part of the Christmas story narrative. “WE just felt if we left it another year without having the street party then it was not something that would ever come back,” Ms Lowe said. “We don’t want the town to lose these things that are important to families.” The plan is for the event to return as an annual party, with businesses already indicating support to be on an organising committee moving forward from 2019.

RECORD GENEROSITY FOR LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION EVENT

Building on the success of committees past, the 2018 Light the Night Mount Gambier event raised more than $15,000, making the 2018 event the most successful in the Leukaemia Foundation fundraiser’s history in this region. The event, which incorporates a moving march with lanterns, has been a key awareness building and fundraising event to shine a light on blood cancer and those it affects and the 2018 Mount Gambier event defied the inclement weather on the night to see 250 people rug up and take part.

It was the introduction of business packages, where organisers encouraged business owners to light up their shop windows with the Leukaemia Foundation lanterns, that saw the

boost in fundraising with more than 60 businesses taking on the challenge and helping raise funds. “That was really huge for us as far as our fundraising,” committee chair Aleathia Holland said. “The businesses getting involved also seemed to help get the word out there.”

Once again, it is the generosity of the Mount Gambier community that has left organisers amazed. “I was blown away by how everyone just comes together,” Aleathia said.

That included a last minute marquee erection when the weather threatened to derail the event.

But the show went on with performances from Tamara Seeley and Ben Hood, as well as Ellyana Sims, amongst all the family entertainment

and the array of refreshments, including the Rapid Relief team, who have already signed on for the 2019 event. “They didn’t even charge the public for their food,’ Aleathia said. “They were just so professional and so amazing to work with.” Add to that, the treats from Metro and Jens Hotel and drinks from the Limoncello Caravan and those that braved the icy conditions wanted for nothing. The Tenison Woods College drum corps forming part of the lantern walk was also a beautiful touch.

While the dust has barely settled on the 2018 event, Aleathia and her hard working committee already have some bold plans for 2019 with making the event a regionwide event top of the agenda. “There is nothing between here and Adelaide and I think it would

be great to bus people in from all around the Limestone Coast and really make it a special event for everyone in the region,” Aleathia said. And while the event will also have the Leukaemia Foundation focus, Aleathia would also like to open it up to all cancers, in terms of taking part in the lantern walk which sees gold lanterns representing those who have lost someone to cancer, white signifying those battling cancer or who have survived and blue is a show of support. “There is no other event like it where people can pay tribute to someone they have lost and would love that to be a part of this

Last year, the Mt Gambier & District Community Bank® Branch Scholarship supported local student Lacey Burston with her Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical and Pharmaceutical) studies at the University of Adelaide. Lacey (ictured above right) with branch manager Tracy Koop) said the scholarship gave her the necessary funds to live and study in Adelaide, relieving the financial pressure of attending university. “I am grateful to Mt Gambier & District Community Bank® Branch for helping me to attend university and to pursue my ambitions”, Lacey said. The Mt Gambier & District Community Bank® Scholarship is part of the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Scholarship Program, which partners with Community Bank® branches, Rural Bank and The University of Melbourne.

The program has now supported ore than 670 students, with $7.2million in funding since its inception in 2007.

MUSEUM SECURES FUNDING Member for Barker Tony Pasin has attended the SA Volunteer Fire Fighters Museum dinner to announce $160,000 funding for the project. Mr Pasin has been lobbying his Federal colleagues in Canberra, including hosting a Federal Minister in Naracoorte to see first-hand about the project and its importance for not only the region but all of regional South Australia. The funding was secured through the Community Development Grants Programme.

“Growing up in the South East I understand that volunteer firefighting is part of life for almost every family on the land,” Mr Pasin said. “This museum will honour the sacrifice that so many of our volunteers have made over generations. It’s a reminder to all volunteer firefighters pass and present, that we appreciate their dedication and hard work in often dangerous, life threatening conditions, leaving their own family, home and sometimes community to help others.I want to acknowledge the work of all of the volunteers associated with this project but in particular the irrepressible Rex Hall who is the driving force behind this initiative.”

NATURE BASED TOURISM IN THE SPOTLIGHT South Australia’s nature-based tourism strategy has been recognised by the Planning Institute of Australia for outstanding contribution to urban or regional planning by a project outside of the planning sector. The Nature Like Nowhere Else tourism strategy and action plan won the President’s Award at the PIA SA Awards earlier this month. The world heritage listed Naracoorte Caves are part of the strategy.The strategy was developed by the Department for Environment and Water and the South Australian Tourism Commission in conjunction with the tourism industry. It aims to

make a significant contribution to the state’s economy and create new jobs and investment, particularly in regional areas of the state. South Australian Tourism Commission Chief Executive Rodney Harrex said nature-based tourism contributes millions to the local economy. “We’re implementing strategies across government and creating new opportunities to improve and grow this space – we are delighted to see this effort recognised,” Mr Harrex said. The PIA SA awards celebrate leading practice, leadership and achievement. The Nature Like Nowhere Else strategy focuses on four strategic development opportunities – standout walking journeys, unrivalled native wildlife experiences, immersive marine wildlife experiences and cutting-edge sensory experiences. It aims to harness opportunities on private and public land across the state and help communities create sustainable employment in nature-based tourism, which is one of the fastest-growing tourism sectors.

Potato & broccoli frittata 2 medium brushed potatoes, peeled, cut into 5mm slices 1 1/2 cups small broccoli florets and stems 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided 2 spring onions, thinly sliced

100g Tasty Cheddar, grated 10 extra-large Free Range Eggs, whisked to blend well 1 tablespoon Red Wine Vinegar 1 teaspoon Dijon Mustard 120g pkt 4 Leaf Salad

Method Preheat oven to 180C (160C fan-forced). Cook the potato slices in a saucepan of boiling salted water for 2 mins or until just tender. Using a slotted spoon, transfer potatoes to a bowl. Return water to the boil. Add broccoli florets and stems and cook for 1 min or until just tender. Drain. Heat a 26cm ovenproof non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Add 2 teaspoons oil. Add half the potatoes and cook for 2 mins or until just tender and pale golden. Repeat with another 2 teaspoons oil and remaining potatoes. Stir in broccoli and spring onions. Reserve 2 tablespoons cheese. In a bowl, stir 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper and remaining cheese into eggs. Gently stir egg mixture into vegetables in pan. Sprinkle with reserved cheese. Bake for 12-15 mins or until puffed and centre is just set. Cool slightly. In a bowl, whisk vinegar, mustard and remaining 2 tablespoons oil. Season with salt and pepper. Toss with salad mix. Cut frittata into wedges and serve with salad.

Do you know what’s never caught on? Wearing a cap sideways. Wearing your hat with the peak at the front is a classic and you’ll see plenty of people wearing a cap in this fashion. Anyone can do it and no one will ask any questions.

Wearing a cap backwards? You’ve got to be a bit careful with this one.

It’s a look that not everyone can get away with. There are several risks with wearing your hat in this way. Often a person will do it because they think it will make them look cooler in some way. If you have to wear a hat in a certain way to look cooler, then I’ve got some bad news for you; the cap won’t help. You still look like you’re not cool, but now people are a little bit distracted by the fact you’re a try hard. Wearing your hat backwards kind of defeats the whole purpose of wearing a hat. Hats were made with the purpose of keeping

Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit is one of the few people I’ve seen manage this look without looking ridiculous. The fact you don’t recognise the name Fred Durst, or Limp Bizkit, gives a fair idea as to how rare it is that someone pulls this look off.

It also gives a fair idea that you weren’t born before 1995.

So only rarely is it possible to pull off the hat backwards look. As for the hat sideways look, inevitably it ends up with the person wearing the hat looking like they’ve escaped from the padded room they’ve been locked up in. The only

time wearing a hat sideways is acceptable is if there is a propeller on the top, and you’re also wearing brightly coloured overalls. People will think you’re mad with this look, but in a playful, fun way.

While we’re talking about things that never caught on, I thought I’d share some more things that have never caught on. Common sense has never really caught on. That’s the problem with it. It’s not that common.

The Gold Coast Suns have never quite caught on. Every now and then I go on the internet just to check that the Gold Coast still has an AFL team.

Sometimes it’s because I think, “Was that all a dream? Did the Gold Coast really have an AFL team that never won and no one wanted to play for?

Or do Carlton just look like they have a different uniform in my dreams?”

Sometimes I check the internet hoping that they’ve moved the Gold Coast to Tasmania. I think it’d be funny if they moved the Suns to Tasmania because surely they’d have to change the team’s name to the Tasmania Rains.

Fads have never quite caught on.

When I say Fads, I don’t mean the fake cigarette lollies we used to all eat as kids in the 80s. But now that I think about it they’ve never quite caught on. Fags were really cool. As a kid, you could experience how cool you looked while you slowly killed yourself. You could wander down to the local deli and spend the rest of the day making out you were smoking. What do you do with Fads? Without the fake cancer stick thing, they’re just a weird skinny white lolly. And once Big Boss lollies came along, what need was there for cigarette shaped lollies when you could have a fake cigar.

Going back to fads though, do you remember when we all thought we’d be planking forever? Do you remember having a pet rock? How many Beanie Kids do you have at your house? Have you been geocaching lately? Remember when everyone was challenging you to tip a bucket of ice water on yourself?

Bottleflipping? Nae Nae? Shoeies?

Dabbing? Fidget spinners? Trusting politicians? All shortlived fads that we should have realised were never going to last. They never quite caught on.

A multi-generational logging company was toasted as the supreme winner of the inaugural Green Triangle Timber Industry Awards at The Barn in Mount Gambier.

GTTIA chair Adrian Flowers said the committee was very happy with nominations.

“We had excellent numbers, and all were of a very high calibre right across all categories,” he said. “It was about recognising everyone who contributes to the success of an industry that annually generates more than $778 million gross regional product.“ The Green Triangle is home to Australia’s largest collective plantation and timber processing industry with more than 355,000 hectares of soft and hardwood plantations producing timber for local manufacturing as well as national and export markets. The industry provides employment for around 8500 people.

The awards had been run by a nine-strong committee who represented a diverse section of the industry.

“It had taken 18 months to bring together and I thank each member for their support,” Mr Flowers said. “To our sponsors we offer our sincere appreciation for your support to the industry and these awards which have exceeded all expectation.”

The awards dinner was held at The Barn in Mount Gambier with Australian comedian Tommy Little MC for the evening.

ONEFORTYONE STRENGTHENS ITS REPUTATION The OneFortyOne Jubilee Highway Sawmill continues to forge its reputation as one of the nation’s top timber processing facilities.

The company’s success at the inaugural Green Triangle Timber Industry Awards – recently held in Mount Gambier – has only furthered its standing within the forestry sector, receiving the timber processing excellence award.

It is reward for the effort by the sawmill team who transformed the site through a renewed culture, lifting its log input from 513,000m3 in 2012 to 750,000m3 in 2014 – all without any capital investment.

The change was driven by the site management team following an industry downturn. A targeted focus on three rules - be on time, go home safely each day, and take pride in what you do – significantly transformed the workforce which continue to go beyond best practice in sawmilling to achieve strong results annually.

In addition to investing in its people within the company, OneFortyOne has also grown its footprint in the wider community. This desire to contribute in a meaningful and productive way to the wider community was also recognised at the GTTIA gala event with the regional and community award.

Initiatives such as its community capacity building grants program – a partnership with Stand Like Stone

Foundation – is among its major focuses, generating $80,000 in donations from 2014 to 2017.

Community events such as the Blue Lake Fun Run, educational programs and environmental initiatives have all been supported by the company, with its reach spanning across the entire Green Triangle region.

ONEFORTYONE EMPLOYEES HARD WORK RECOGNISED The instrumental role OneFortyOne (OFO) employees Des Schebella and Linda Cotterill have played in shaping the Green Triangle forestry sector has been recognised, claiming the top individual male and female accolades respectively at the inaugural Green Triangle Timber Industry Awards.

during the 1983 Ash Wednesday fires before spending six months overseeing the Lake Bonney log salvage operations.

During the 1980s sirex outbreak Des worked with a local engineer to develop a prototype inoculation hammer which is still in use today. During the 1990s, Des combined his skills and knowledge of silvicultural operations and helped to develop research trials into forestry machinery.

In the mid 2000s Des undertook a senior forester role for ForestrySA and later OFO, and has been responsible for site preparation activities across its Green Triangle forests.

He has trained more than 500 forestry firefighters over his career, and played an integral role in direct forestry fire response in this region.

Nominations called for individuals who demonstrate excellence across a broad range of skills in the timber industry, highlighting those who go above and beyond in their position.

A career spanning over 40 years in the Green Triangle sector has seen Des play a key role in managing various silviculture programs across the 93,000ha OFO estate, while proving instrumental in developing training programs for forestry firefighting.

Des joined the timber industry in 1975 working for the South Australian Government’s Woods and Forest department before moving to a senior forester role in the Green Triangle in 1981. He was a fire supervisor

Linda Cotterill’s rich and diverse career in the industry started when she became the first registered female professional forester in the Australian Institute of Forestry. Since then she has worked for hardwood and softwood forest growers, forestry contractors, planted trees through to managing the harvesting operations at the end of the forest cycle.

In her time in the Green Triangle region, Linda has been instrumental in developing contracts underpinning contractor scale and security, bringing competitors together to collaborate and innovating approaches to log production and supply to regional mills.

As a direct impact of her work, sawlog and value recovery has increased by up to 13pc across forestry operations thanks to improved infield and marketing practices.

Most notable in recent times was her efforts in bringing Safework SA and LITA together with major industry players to initiate the current fatigue management work ongoing in the region.

Lesser well-known initiatives she was heavily involved in was kicking off the standard harvest plan lodgement process in the Glenelg Shire, and the development of unified equipment standards for fire equipment in the Green Triangle region.

Linda’s leadership has seen her captain forest fire fighting brigades and mentor several foresters and young cadets completing their forestry certificates.

Linda and Des’s contributions to the Green Triangle timber industry have been outstanding, and they have both played instrumental roles in shaping the Green Triangle forestry industry for the future.

We have a focus on early intervention and prevention services and our core activities include the recruitment and support of foster carers, supports for people experiencing homelessness, Aboriginal services, family relationships, counselling, financial inclusion and community adult education.

EDUCATION PROGRAM A HUGE SUCCESS Around 60 young leaders from the region met at Bool Lagoon last month for this year’s final instalment of the South East NRM Board’s Young Environmental Leaders Program (YELP).

The event began with a welcome to country and smoking ceremony

by SE Aboriginal Focus Group elder Doug Nicholls. Students then moved on to education sessions on water ecology, Aboriginal culture and macroinvertebrates. Making the most of ideal weather conditions, the groups also trekked to the pontoons at Hacks Lagoon to learn about native wildlife and the large number of birds currently calling the water system home. Tenison Woods College Sustainability Coordinator Tom Linnell said YELP has been an incredible experience for students. “The program is a great opportunity for youth from across the South East to connect, share sustainability problems within their schools, and more importantly solve

these problems together,” he said.

The program included forums for students to learn more about local environmental and natural resources issues so they could take away ideas to share with their schools. Throughout the day, students presented their projects and explained how they have influenced and changed behaviours for the better at their schools. “The final YELP session at Bool Lagoon was a great day out to explore the park and for our students to share their projects with other schools,” Mr Linnell said. “I’d encourage all schools, teachers and students to get involved in the program next year.” The South East NRM Board’s Young Environmental Leaders Program is funded by the NRM Levy and delivered by Natural Resources South East. COUNCIL RAISES FUNDS FOR MCGRATH FOUNDATION During the month of October, the District Council of Grant raised $3,680 in funds towards the McGrath Foundation, who provide support for people and their families experiencing breast cancer and to help fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses throughout the country.

‘Pink Up October’ is breast cancer awareness month, and the District Council of Grant took up the cause, running a range of fundraising activities, such as raffles, morning teas, lucky squares and selling McGrath Foundation merchandise at council offices. Council was generously supported by the Bellum Hotel, which ran meat raffles and provided other donations as well. The Bellum Hotel raised $1165 towards the overall total of funds raised. The month culminated in a final lunch on October 31 with Margie Atwell, a McGrath Foundation Breast Care Nurse, speaking

about the importance of early detection, breast health understanding and the role of breast care nurse in regional communities. Mark will also lead a discussion around large scale biomass projects occurring in other regions and what the opportunities might look like for our region.” Shahana Mckenzie, from Bioenergy Australia, will provide insights into international investment in bioenergy in Australia and present findings from Bioenergy Australia’s State of the Nation Report which ranks the States and Territories regarding their Bioenergy performance. MOUNT GAMBIER’S GREATEST COMMUNITY PROJECT SET TO BE CELEBRATED It might only be anecdotal but it could be argued that the construction of Mount Gambier’s Rook Walk and Lookout is one of the most enduring projects to come out of a working bee in this region’s history.

Given community groups and sporting clubs often struggle to hit double figures when it comes time for a working bee, the concept that around 2500 residents and visitors banded together on November 27, 1918, to build a four metre high stone wall that was more than 200 metres long is almost incomprehensible.

Even the speed at which this mammoth task was organised is lightning compared with today’s standards.

The call for donations of time and money went out in August of that year, and by September, the November 27 date had been set in stone with more than 800 men, 300 women, 700 school children and 700 visitors dug in to level the banks, erect fences , construct three timber lookouts and then lug the local basalt, limestone and dolomite to get the job done.

Adding to the story is this astonishing feat of construction happened just 16 days after the end of

World War I. Additional works were carried out the following march, and even then, 200 volunteers rolled up their sleeves to give a hand, with one final community working bee held that November and a tea house was built between the resthouse and Gordon’s monument.

It was named after Arthur Rook, the Mount Gambier and District Progress Association president at the time the project was first mooted, in July 1953. He died during the Spanish Influenza Epidemic in 1919 and never saw it completed. lifestyle1.net | 36

One hundred years on and the community is set to celebrate this

incredible community project with celebrations next Tuesday. Official proceedings will commence at 9.30am with a Welcome to Country, an address from newly elected Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin, a plaque unveiling and a cake cutting ceremony.

Compton Primary School students will headline with entertainment, singing some time honoured classics, with the Mount Gambier City Band and Salvation Army Band also giving the event its musical score.

There will be an exhibition, the opportunity to dress in period costume for photos, an audio tour of the Rook Walk and memorabilia for sale.

Katherine Height’s most important role is being a mother to her, now eight year old daughter, Ella Gray.

But a diagnosis when Ella was three months old – she has a rare genetic condition that results in epilepsy – has added some other roles to Katherine’s portfolio with carer and campaigner now also hats she wears much of the time. It is that role as a carer and her tireless campaigning for epilepsy awareness that has seen Katherine honoured in the 2018 Community Achievement Awards where she took home the Carers SA Carer Achievement Award.

“I do what I do because of Ella,” Katherine said, in the wake of her award win. “I have only really even seen myself as a carer in the past 12 months – I just saw it as being a mum.” Katherine is not only passionate about raising awareness of epilepsy but also instigating change in the halls of power – South Australia is the only State where the peak epilepsy body receives no government funding. “I want to help people understand the condition and I want to get change within our State with that funding even though I know it is an uphill battle.” Part of both those campaigns has been Katherine setting up Ella’s Purple Promise five years ago – a social media campaign that treks Ella’s journey and looks to shine a light on epilepsy. “This is a lifelong situation for her (Ella),” Katherine said. It has seen Katherine already raise more than $10,000 since 2014 from golf days and movie nights, which has helped fund bringing specialist registered nurses to the region to train schools, kindergartens and newly diagnosed families with dealing with epilepsy. Ella’s journey has been a complicated one - she can experience more than 100 seizures a day and her condition makes them difficult to control. It has seen Katherine have to place Ella on a ketogenic diet, which presents plenty of challenges and certainly adds to the degree of difficulty of meal preparation, and Ella’s epilepsy is photosensitive, which adds another layer again. “Ella rocks the sunglasses at school,” Katherine said. “But she played netball for the first time this year and loved it and while every day is different for Ella and for me, we are continually finding ways for her to be able to do everything she wants to do and not miss out an anything.” Ironically Ella has really never known life any other way and her resilience inspires Katherine every day. “Nothing fazes her – she just rolls with it,” Katherine said. “She has the brightest, most beautiful personality and she’s a champion.” She also describes Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell as a champion for his efforts in supporting her campaign to secure government funding. So while Katherine’s award sits a little uncomfortably with her, she realises it has again given her a platform to spruik her message about epilepsy and that’s a positive thing. Certainly those who have worked with her closely in her fight for funding and raising awareness are thrilled the tireless campaigner has been recognised for her efforts. “One of the best parts of my job is supporting highly motivated people in our community, like Katherine, who are passionate advocates for change,” Mr Bell said.

“Katherine’s main motivation comes from her daughter Ella, but her ongoing work in this area positively impacts the more than 61,000 people living with epilepsy in South Australia. Through Ella’s Purple Promise, Katherine has tirelessly fundraised, educated and advocated for greater public awareness around this condition. Katherine is proof that big things can be achieved with hard work, determination and persistence.

I’ll continue to support Katherine on her campaign to raise awareness with the State Government and deliver a better outcome for the 61,000 South Australians living with epilepsy.” The Epilepsy Centre, in Adelaide, Has also worked closely with Katherine, as it does, all epilepsy diagnosed families, and CEO Robyn Wakefield was also thrilled Katherine had been honoured. “I was absolutely thrilled to receive the news that Kat Height was the recipient of the South Australian Community Achievement Award,” Ms Wakefield said. “Her passion has brought the issues facing those with epilepsy into the spotlight and her determination is to be admired.”

This year Katherine was also the recipient of The 2018 Golden Light Award Winner and the representative for Epilepsy Australia and The Epilepsy Centre at the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) Conference in Bali in June.

LOCAL SPORT LOCAL OFFICIALS HIT A HOME RUN It was been almost two decades since the Mount Gambier & District Baseball League has hosted an Australian Baseball League match so securing the four game series between the Adelaide Bite and new franchise Auckland Tuatara from December 21-23 this year is a huge coup. Lessons have also been learned from that 1999 three game series between the, then Adelaide Giants and Melbourne Monarchs, and this year’s matches will see free entry in the hopes to expose elite baseball to as many fans and potential fans as possible. Taking baseball to the regions has become a focus of the Baseball Australia and not just one off series. The new Korean franchise calls Geelong home and with the Australian Baseball League committed to further club expansion from outside Australia’s borders, Mount Gambier is not out of the running for a future franchise to call Blue Lake Sports Park home. The clock is now ticking on some upgrades to the already impressive Mount Gambier & District Baseball League – improvements that local players will also be able to take advantage of, as the current domestic season progresses. The lux level of the lighting is under the microscope, two new bull pens, the area where pitchers warm up, are set to be constructed and the batting cages are set for a makeover to ensure Blue Lake Sports Park meets the necessary standards for elite baseball.

“Bruce Morale has been doing a heap of work,” league vice president Michael Summers, who has been at the forefront of securing this ABL fixture, said. “And the city council is really supporting us, helping us fast track grants and assisting with works in kind – they have just been fantastic.” The series was officially confirmed last Wednesday, with matches set down for Friday night, two matches on Saturday and one on Sunday to round out the series. “It has all happened pretty quickly,” Summers said. “We got approached early October about the possibility of the Adelaide Bite coming to play here and then came the phone call from Baseball Australia and then next thing we knew officials had flown down from the Gold Coast to check out the grounds and I was out there meeting them.” Local officials now have a month to put the finishing touches to the facilities and promote the crucial visit – a visit to which the South Australian based Adelaide Bite are looking forward. “It is a great opportunity for us,” Adelaide Bite executive officer Nathan Davison said. “We want to give regional areas a chance to see baseball at the highest level and the players all really enjoy these opportunities.” Hopes are high, Bite coaching staff and players will also be able to run some coaching clinics for local hopefuls.

“We are looking at getting there a day or two early to give local kids a chance to get out there and interact and learn from some of our players.”

Like all national sporting franchises, the Adelaide Bite is looking to establish a strong identity and fan base in its home State and the visit will build on the close connections this region has with the former Central player Dylan Ridding debuting with the Bite last season, former Grant High School specialist baseball coach and Federal player Scott Gladstone on the coaching panel, and Mitchell Lightbody, formerly of Tigers, and Angus Roeger, who has strong family connections to Mount Gambier, also associated with the franchise – Mitchell as a development player and Roeger as an outfielder. “It is great having those connection as it means country kids can see there is a pathway and they could get an opportunity to play at the highest level,” Davison said. There is no doubt the league knows how to host top level competitions dating back to 1995, when the league hosted its first national championship, something it has now done at under age level on four occasions, with Claxton Shield and Masters events also converging on Blue Lake Sports Park over the journey. Officials also had everything crossed that Ridding (pictured) might well suit up for the Bite when they take on Auckland on Ridding’s former home patch but a shoulder injury, sustained while sliding in a recent match, has put paid to that, with the current prognosis suggesting the homegrown hero will not be able to take his place in the Bite line-up.

INDIANS & TIGERS FACE OFF IN EPIC BATTLE

In round seven of Division 1 baseball the first game was played on Friday night under lights. South Indians batting first pushed three runs across the plate. Ben Morale got on board after an error by Tigers shortstop Alex Harkness. Dean Hamilton singled and Bruce Morale doubled to left field to score his brother. Alex Lewis singled to right field which scored both Hamilton and Bruce Morale. Lead off batter for Tigers, Brayden Morton picked a walk and Harkness found himself on base after a three strike error by catcher Jesse Balshaw. Morton stole home and Harkness crossed the plate on Dyllan Lane’s safehit to to shortstop. The Indians added two more runs in the second. Hayden Timms found himself at first after another error by the Tigers shortstop and Ben Morale hit safely to right field.

Both of these runners crossed the plate after a difficult catch was dropped by centre fielder Morton giving South a three run lead early in the game. In the bottom of the fourth dig, Riley Rolph walked and Harkness hit safely to shortstop and they both crossed home plate on Tyler Horrigan’s safehit to right field narrowing the lead to just one run but Tigers tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth when Mitch Crosbie singled to third base followed by safe hits to Rolph and Morton to load the bases.

SOUTH EAST GOLF VETERANS There were 57 golfers at Kingston for the latest round of South East Golf Veterans and they found the course to be in great condition. First Division was won by a local Milan Hodak with 39 points from Rob Carter on 38 and Rob Ellis on 37. Milan was able to absorb a couple of wipe outs and still win. Likewise Trev Williams won Second Division with 40 points from Gav Sparrow with 37 and Jimmy Hyland 36. Nearest the pins were won by Rob Harkness on the fourth and Chris Leach on the 17th. The ball rundown was for 29 or more, the Ross Orchard trophy going to Ray Thiele and Barry Hutchison. Two new members were welcomed - Ray Patching, from Blue Lake, and Rob Chalmers, from Kingston. The next outing is at Attamurra on November 26.

Isaccson scored on Hamilton’s safehit to centre field and Morale crossed for another on brother Bruce’s double to left field. SPORT DEMONS STAMP AUTHORITY ON COMPETITION

With the future of the Pioneers Basketball Club barely hanging by a thread, I continue to be in disbelief that a successful and financially buoyant club finds itself out in the cold. While the old adage ‘where there’s life, there’s hope’ still applies, hopes are fading and the prospect of no Pioneers team to cheer on at the Icehouse going forward does tend to make even the hardest hearted fan more than a touch nostalgic. Which is why, I have paused to reflect on the 30 years of high quality basketball that the Pioneers have given me. It’s been a topic of conversation over a few frothies at my favourite watering hole over the past week or two - who have been the best players to suit up for the Pioneers over the journey? Plenty of names have been tossed around. Andre Le Fleur & Dwayne Cross from the early days; the rebounding colossus Jason Joynes; Jamie Holmes and more recently the likes of Brad Hill & Daniel Alexander. Like all sports fans I have my favourites. On the podium in third place I like star point guard and current Pioneers captain Tom Daly, 2nd rank for me is the big yank, Jason Sedlock, and at the top of the tree it’s hard for me to go past Mount Gambier’s own Tony Cook, the most capped player of the locals to proudly pull on the Pioneers playing singlet. Speaking of Mount Gambier’s own, those fans looking for their basketball fix, in lieu of the Pioneers, should get behind the Mount Gambier Lakers team competing in the South West Conference of the Country Basketball League. They are all local lads playing some high quality basketball with the likes of Kane de Wit, Lachie Hunter and Matty Berkefeld leading the way. It is also another pathway for the city’s emerging talent to test themselves at a higher level.

It was billed as the match of the round and Demons and Warriors White did not disappoint with an exciting and very close game at the late time slot. Demons got off to a fantastic start with a great hit and some outstanding base running by Bella Morale, who secured a home run. Demons piled on the pressure with four runs in the third innings, as they kept finding the gaps despite some excellent and accurate pitching by Imogen Walker for Warriors. Cody Manning showed why she’s played at the elite level with some excellent hitting and youngster Grace Millard pitched very well to hold the Warriors batters to only four safehits. Warriors gave Demons something to think about in the last innings, with a three bagger from Walker and even though they scored three runs, but Demons held on to run out winners 6-3.

SWIMMERS RETURN FROM VICTORIA WITH PERSONAL BEST PERFORMANCES

I think we all know there is big money in professional sport, especially in America, but news last week surrounding Pittsburg Steelers football player Le’Veon Bell really puts it into perspective. Bell was seeking a lucrative multiyear deal but the Steelers instead placed a ‘ franchise tag’ on Bell guaranteeing him $14.45 million dollars for the current season. This week Bell declined the offer and will instead sit out the season and look for a multi-year deal with another team next season. Sports Nut is not criticising Bell as he obviously doesn’t want to risk injury that might damage his future earning capacity but in what other profession would turning down $14.45 million dollars guaranteed for one year’s work be considered a smart decision?

Recently, four Mt Gambier Swim Club members were selected in a Barwon South West representative team, to compete in Melbourne.

One of the advantages of being a cross club, the Mount Gambier swimmers, Lucy Edwards, Elijah, Vaughn & Indee Stratford were selected in the Country Optus Junior Dolphin 8-12 team and in the pool competed against seven other districts from regional Victoria. Each swimmer competed in a number of individual events, as well as team relays. A strong competition allowed the swimmers to perform well and come away from the event with a number of pesonal best times, finalist placings and for Indee, a ronze medal in her 50m breaststroke. Mt Gambier Swimming Club is currently offering free Come & Try Sessions at the Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre most weeknights. Swimmers must be able to swim a minimum of 25m freestyle/backstroke.
