There is no better place to celebrate the January long weekend this year than Portland. The Portland harbour provides the perfect backdrop for two days of family friendly entertainment, while the serious fishos can try their luck in the fishing competition.

The Hooked on Portland festival was established last year and has quickly become a staple on the tourism and community calendar for the seaside city.

More than 10,000 people attended the 2018 event and this year’s program is even more jam-packed with activities.

Television chef and sustainability advocate Paul West will headline Hooked on Portland celebrations, adding a new food and lifestyle element to the two-day festival.

West, of River Cottage Australia fame, will appear in the Foodie and Fishing Hub across the weekend

festivities to provide cooking demonstrations and to discuss the importance of sustainability and sourcing regional supplies.

As part of the Hooked on Portland festivities, West will show audience members how to cook a series of delicious meals using local produce. He will also lead a panel of industry experts to explore the regional food trail in South West Victoria and to provide insights into how to best access the farm to plate experience.

“Eventgoers will also have the opportunity to meet the celebrity chef at his book signing session which I trust will attract hundreds of foodie-fans,” Mayor Cr Anita Rank said.

West will combine forces with Koonara Wines’ Dru Reschke on January 27 to dish up Hooked on Portland’s Longest Lunch with tickets for that gourmet treat some of the most sought after for the weekend.

The festival boasts a star studded line-up with ASTA set to headline musical performances alongside a lineup of local musicians and international touring acts.

ASTA has performed with some of the biggest names in international music such as Ellie Goulding and rapper All Day and will bring an exciting blend of contemporary and pop music to wow the crowd.

ASTA first rose to prominence in 2012 when her track My Heart Is On Fire won Triple J’s Unearthed High in 2012 and since then she has performed at music festivals across the globe and released her debut EP Shine, which has been streamed more than 1.3 million times.

ASTA will be supported by Australian groove based blue-billygrass-rockin’-roots band 19-Twenty, who are performing as part of their national tour. Live performances from

The fishing competition is also a huge drawcard, running from 6am on Saturday, January 26, until 2pm on Sunday, January 27, followed by another industry expert panel talking about recreational fishing in Victoria, with the presentations to follow.

COMMUNITY BACKS RECREATION HUB

The Mount Gambier Community and Recreation Hub is one step closer with an overwhelming yes vote in the community poll. Of a total 8722 elector survey returns, 71.6 per cent voted ‘yes’ in support of the project, and 28.4 per cent voted ‘no’. The total number of ‘yes’ votes was 6230 while 2466 electors voted ‘no’ with a 0.13 per cent invalid response rate. “We thank all electors who took the time to lodge a vote and

have a say, a 45 per cent return rate is an excellent result for a survey of this type and this compares with the November 2018 Council election that saw an elector return rate of 43 per cent,” Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin said. Independent market research company Market Solutions distributed the elector survey to 19,332 residents via post in late November to gauge community support for or against

the proposed facility. The survey closed at last post on December 21. “The Mount Gambier Community and Recreation Hub Survey response rate of 45 per cent is considered a high response rate for a postal survey and the Council can be confident these results reflect the views of the broader community on this topic,” a spokesperson for market research company Market Solutions said. The ‘yes’ vote means that Council

will submit a full business case to the Federal Government by January 24.

However, for the project to proceed, Council is still seeking matching funding from the State Government and held meetings last week to further discuss the proposal. “In the meantime, council will continue to consult with the Community Reference Group, sporting and interest groups and the community to fine tune designs to maximise use

I will be assisting council to get that funding. There are time pressures of course, with the end of January being when the business case needs to be submitted but the groundwork has certainly been done. I think it needed to be a convincing vote to convince the State Government and I think 72 percent is convincing. The lingering concern in people’s minds is the operating cost but I think that has been addressed and obviously it is a project that will continue to be refined going forward.”

TONY PASIN (MEMBER FOR BARKER) “It’s a great result and it was really encouraging to see how many people took the opportunity to vote. Seventy percent is a really strong vote of confidence in the project and I am pleased that 12 months of work that has been put in by community leaders has got us to this point and that we have not only secured $15million of the overall project cost but also had such significant community buy-in. It was an overwhelming message from the community that this is a project they want to see delivered. I have my fingers crossed and everything else crossed in the hope the State Government sees merit in the project and partner with the Federal Government and council to fun it. I’ve spoken to Steven Marshall and the Infrastructure Minister Stefan Knoll and I think everyone acknowledges the importance of the project and it is a matter of working through their budget pressures. But I hope they see that this is a once in a generation project and help deliver it to the community of Mount Gambier.

He (the Premier) was impressed with the participation rate in the poll and we ran him through the fly through of the project and showed him the concept drawings so he could easily visualise what this project will mean for Mount Gambier.“

At the moment we are cramming schools and other classes into two terms – term one and four. Those terms are full and we do have to knock back some year levels from schools because there isn’t the time and room.

The drowning statistics for December were terrible and it does seem so many kids are slipping through the system which is why we want to be able to fit our after school swimming lessons in all year round. If kids can be part of a 12 month program you would be amazed how they progress. It will also be great for the swim clubs that often head to Portland during winter and our aqua aerobics is another program we could run 12 months. We have up

Easy chicken noodle salad 400g pkt shelf-fresh Singapore noodles 1/4 cup (60ml) lime juice 2 tbs peanut oil 1 tbs sweet chilli sauce 1 tsp fish sauce 2 tbs peanut butter

1 Roast Chicken, bones removed, meat sliced 1 carrot, peeled, cut into long matchsticks 1/4 red cabbage, finely shredded 3 spring onions, thinly sliced diagonally

Method Prepare the noodles following packet directions. Drain well. Place the lime juice, oil, sweet chilli sauce, fish sauce, peanut butter and 1 tbs water in a screw-top jar. Shake to combine. Combine the chicken, noodles, carrot, cabbage and spring onion in a large bowl. Drizzle with half the dressing and toss to coat. Divide among serving plates. Drizzle with the remaining dressing.

HEADING OFF TO BUILD HIS FUTURE There’ll be no gap year for St Martins Lutheran College student Jackson Archibald. The top ranked Year 12 student in the Limestone Coast last year is headed straight to the University of Adelaide to study Architecture and Civil Engineering.

His acceptance into his first choice tertiary course comes on the back of an impressive ATAR of 99.6 and the plan is to become an architect, although Jackson was very keen to also ensure, as part of that career aspiration, that he had a strong grasp on engineering, which is why he has opted for the double degree.

Jackson has a long standing interest in building things, starting with Lego as a child - with the family home in Mount Gambier still doubling as a storage facility for the thousands and thousands of Lego bricks Jackson has hoarded over the years – and continuing through to as recently as last year when Jackson completed Visual Arts & Design as part of his SACE, while still in Year 11, with that project, which was part of the State’s SACE Exhibition at the end of the year, having a strong design and architecture focus.

While Jackson would describe his study style and slow and steady, making sure he was always on top of it, he does not think there is a one size fits all approach.

“I liked to make sure I was always on top of the work load and working steadily through the assignments,” he said. “But I know some people who produce their best work when they leave it to the last minute and work under pressure so it really is whatever works best for you.”

Like many Year 12 students, Jackson was also juggling a part time job – he works at Kmart – and also made sure he had plenty of down time, catching up with friends and spending time with family. “I used to still walk the dog and just made sure I had a life,” Jackson.

That being said, he was a diligent student, and there is no doubt he put in the time and effort that eventually secured him 19.8 for Physics; 19.5 for Specialist Maths; 19.6 for Maths Methods; 17 for English and 9.6 (out of 10) for his research project.

His merit worthy art project from 2017 rated a 19.5 and the best of

those efforts amounted to Jackson’s impressive overall ATAR. “I did expect to get a good ATAR but I honestly didn’t think I would get in the 90s, let alone 99.6.”

Jackson admits his dedication to study was something he developed in his senior years at school although he had always been a good student and he credits St Martins Lutheran College with helping him through and making his years at school an enjoyable experience.

“It has a real community feel and our whole grade was basically good friends so in the end it was almost like family,” Jackson said. “The teachers were so supportive as well – they all took the time to get to know us.”

The Archibalds moved to Mount Gambier in 2007 with father Darren’s work in the bank, meaning Jackson joined the St Martins family as a Year 2 student.

His maths teacher Kristine Hancock certainly left her mark on her star student. “If you had any queries she always got back to you so quickly and she was always happy to help,” Jackson said. “It was just reassuring to be able to clarify you were on the right path with

Jackson would recommend playing to your strengths when selecting Year 12 subjects. “That’s certainly what I did,” he said. “I always enjoyed the maths and sciences more than the arts type subjects so why wouldn’t you pick subjects you enjoy and are hopefully good at.”

Gearing up for his four year degree, the region’s top ranked student already has his sights set on a masters, maybe even in both fields. Playing the piano and cooking are Jackson’s other outside interests and they will help him continue to balance life at university.

Mr Pasin said the Morrison Government is increasing the number of scholarships available through the Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships program and applications were now open. “Scholarships of up to $18,000 are available to help students in Barker with the costs of studying STEM at university or a Vocational Education and Training (VET) institution,” Mr Pasin said. “One of these scholarships could help a promising local student realise their potential and get a STEM education that will open a world of future possibilities. I encourage every student in Barker who wants to study STEM to apply for the program.” The Morrison Government has committed $58.1 million for more than 3,150 scholarships for regional and remote students. The first round of the scholarship program already helped more than 500 regional and remote students commence study last year.

RISING COMEDY STAR SET TO LET LOOSE ON SIR ROBERT HELPMANN THEATRE STAGE Best known to his fans for his ‘Loosest Aussie Bloke’ and ‘Bogan Aussie’ characters that reach more than 2.5 million of his social media followers, Alex Williamson has performed a phenomenal number of shows to a prodigious amount of people.

Last year alone, he played to majority sold out audiences at comedy festivals across Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom and a 36-date tour of greater Australia, making him undoubtedly one of Australia’s most popular comedians and social media creators. And this comedy juggernaut is only getting stronger as he steams through shows like a deranged Thomas The Tank Engine. He is now headed to regional Australia and Mount Gambier is fortunately one of his chosen destinations. Alex will be performing at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre on February 9.

Last week we went for a little family holiday to Adelaide.

One day we decided to spend some time at the beach. You won’t believe what I saw there. I saw my first ever up-your-bum bikini! You know, a G-string bikini. A bikini where the bottom part does not have enough material to cover the wearer’s bottom. It is fully out.

It might not be called an up your bum bikini. It might have a proper name. If it doesn’t, I’d like to suggest G-kini, or maybe gikini.

Anyway, I knew gikinis existed. I’ve seen them in my Instagram feed. I just didn’t think they really existed in the world I live in. I didn’t expect I’d see it at a beach I went to. I assumed that they were only worn by Gold Coast strippers when they went to the beach during the day. Imagine my surprise when I ran into one at the beach. I didn’t literally run into one. I just saw one from a distance.

I don’t mind admitting I was a little astounded. Donna noticed me standing with my mouth wide open and knew that something was up. When she followed my outstretched arm that was pointing towards the young lady she realised what was up. “It’s very common in Europe,” she said, as if it was no big deal.

“This isn’t Europe,” I answered, “this is Henley Beach…and that’s her butt… and everyone can see her butt…and now everyone can see her rubbing her butt with suncream.” Weird.

After my initial shock had subsided a little I didn’t really know what to do. The most important decision I had to make was where to look. I feel like I’ve been trained throughout my life that it’s rude to stare, and it seems that this would be an occasion where that is particularly the case. But once I’d noticed it, I found it hard to look at anything else. It’s like when there’s an

eclipse of the sun and you know you shouldn’t look, but it doesn’t happen very often so you don’t want to miss out. Actually it’s probably more like an eclipse of the moon now that I think about it. If the moon was only eclipsed straight up the middle. I’m going to stop this simile.

So there I am, I’m on a beach in Adelaide, my children are digging holes and building sandcastles completely oblivious to the fact that some girl has her butt out. ’ll be honest, I’m a pretty normal, red blooded heterosexual man.

But I’m not sure that I’m comfortable with this. People who are far smarter will probably say that people should be allowed to wear what they want, that it’s just clothing and there’s nothing sexual about it, but I think most people consider the bottom as a private part and expect that it will be covered in public. I’m not convinced that people’s bottoms should be out on display for any and everyone at the beach. If the next trend is crutchless bikinis, will that be okay? Maybe I’m getting carried away.

My other concern regards whether anyone is simply allowed to wear a gikini to the beach. This girl’s butt seemed acceptable (I honestly barely looked, Donna) but there are lots of butts I wouldn’t want to see. Is it just a thing where people decide on everyone else’s behalf that their butt is worth seeing? Some people won’t get that decision right. There are already plenty of people who decide to wear things that indicate they should still get their mummy or daddy to pick their clothes in the morning. Would you really be comfortable with me, Robbie Tansel, deciding, “I’m going pretty well now.

I’m down from 95 kgs to 93. I think I’d look good in a gikini.” Should people honestly have to suffer due to my irresponsible decision?

I think not. I think the simple answer to this problem is a government department responsible for who is allowed to wear gikinis. People apply, flash their buttocks to the butt inspector and then if everything checks

I’ve got no idea where I’m going with this one. I’ve got a feeling that people are going to tell me that it’s a person’s body and they have the right to wear what they want and do what they want with it, but I’m just wondering if there is some courtesy involved as to whether children should be exposed to it, or whether this is what we want to present to teenage boys (or girls) regarding what is typical beach-wear.

My final question is what does this do to mooning? Is flashing your bottom at people no longer an offensive action, but just what happens as you lay out your towel at the beach?

YAKKA PARK MUSIC FESTIVAL SET FOR A SIXTH YEAR The Yakka Park Music Festival will be take to the stage at Lucindale’s Yakka Park for the sixth consecutive year this April as the annual three day event goes from stength to strength. LOCAL SPORT MOUNT GAMBIER SET TO DEFEND STATE TITLE The Mount Gambier Softball League has named the team set to represent the league, defending the title it won last year, at the 2019 South Australian Senior State Championships over the Australia Day long weekend. The team will be well supported by Di Humphries, Pam Wesolowski and Dylan Walker, with coaching assistance from multiple best and fairest and A grade premiership player, Mount Gambier born and former Warriors gun, Caroline Gardner.

Once more the Mount Gambier side will benefit with the experience of Nicole Vause, who had a terrific tournament last year, and is having a stellar season to date in the local league for Warriors Blue. Cody Manning will undoubtedly provide consistency both with long ball hitting, her cannon arm and safe glove in the field. Her Demons team mates, Montanna and Mackenzie Millard, will shoulder pitching and catching responsibilities as they have proven to be an improved strike to ball ratio combination in the battery, while also offensively damaging teams with both hits and RBIs. Em Hart has been training the house down while leading her home side Wanderers by example, and will be joined by Concordes’ Chelsea Fowler in outfield, who had also shown form with the bat before the Christmas break. Mount Gambier will relish the inclusion of the pace and spriteliness of both Concordes stalwart Jo Hopgood and Wanderers’ Fiona Finch. DEMONS CONTINUE TO LEAD THE COMPETITION The late game provided the best action of the day in Mount Gambier Softball, pitting the undefeated Demons against third placed Warriors White, with Demons just getting across the line 4-2. It was Warriors White who hit the score board first, scoring lead off batter Emmerson Hann after she hit safely to open proceedings.

Demons did not score in the first, with Erin Chaplin pitching accurately and Clare Chaplin taking a good catch at centerfield to retire the dangerous Cody Manning. Demons then hit their stride in the field, holding Warriors scoreless for the next three innings, in no small part due to the pitching of Montanna Millard, who went on to record a dominant 11 strike outs for the game. Warriors stranded a number of base runners, while at the same time Demons pushed ahead, scoring two in the second and one in the fourth and one in the fifth, thanks to hits from Kelly Cawthorne and Rhiannon Mathers. IT WAS A FAMILY AFFAIR AS SOUTH AUSTRALIA FINISHES RUNNER UP AT NATIONALS Georgia Hood continues to make her mark on the national softball stage, bringing home the Rosemary Adey Rookie of the Year Award from the 2019 Gilley’s Shield – the National Open Women’s Softball Championships. With the Under 19 national titles starting on January 20, where Georgia will again be a key player, the rising talent only played as a designated player (hitter) in the open event, not taking to the pitching mound, as she will at the Under 19 championships. But clearly that was enough to impress, with the 18 year old securing a home run, as well as plenty of safehits, as South Australia, after a somewhat shaky start to the week long event in Western Australia, made their way into the title decider against reigning champions New South Wales. The all-conquering NSW line-up, that went through the tournament undefeated, claimed their third successive Gilley Shield, but not before SA put up a fight. Georgia wasn’t the only Hood making her mark, though, with sister Amber having a strong tournament as well, playing mainly second base, right field, picking up some hits, and also using her speed to great effect with some creative baserunning.

FREQUENT FLYER MILES FOR REGIONAL KIDS

I read with interest in last week’s Lifestyle1 the story about young footballers Jake Walker & Mitch Sims in the Adelaide Crows Elite Talent Squad. They join a long line of talented sports people from the Lower South East that have made the trek up and back to Adelaide for an assortment of sports over the years. While it’s for a selected number of specialised sessions on this occasion, some young athletes travel up and back week in and week out to compete in higher standard competition in Adelaide.

Not only is this a big sacrifice from the athletes themselves but in most cases it has also been a huge travel and financial sacrifice by the parents. Equally there have been many very talented young sports people I’ve seen over the years that I felt could have played at a higher level that have been country people at heart and unwilling to make the commitment to travel to or re-locate to Adelaide. While it’s only wishful thinking but wouldn’t it be great if the trip to Adelaide was only a two hour drive.

AND ANOTHER THING...

Sports Nut is looking forward to plenty of high quality tennis with the 2019 Australian Open in full swing. While I won’t be holding my breath that an Australian is about to break the long drought, I’ll enjoy watching the talents of both Roger Federer and Serena Williams for what might be the last time at this event. Each has strong claims to being the best male and female player of all time but they are also 37 years of age and in the twilight of their careers.

The Australian Cricket selectors continue to make head scratching decisions. It’s hard to keep up with all the ins & outs and the inconsistencies. In recent times we have had only one specialist opener - now we have three specialist openers. The selection of Will Pucovski with an eye to the future seems contradicted with the selection of Peter Siddle. Players come in for one test and are axed, then recalled again without producing any form to justify a recall.

Very strange.

GIRLS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF NEWLY ESTABLISHED PATHWAYS Madi Freeman and Brooke Tonon are part of the Limestone Coast Regional Sporting Academy and along with those opportunities to train at a higher level, both girls have also earned specialist opportunities in the sport they love - Australian Rules football - as part of State teams and the Adelaide Crows Academy.

MADI FREEMAN Madi Freeman grew up playing basketball and netball, excelling at both, but always harbouring a passion for Australian Rules football. With the advent of AFLW and the increase in pathways for females who love the national sport, Madi has now forgone the two sports in which she has often represented this region and the State, to concentrate on AFL and it is a decision already paying dividends. Madi has been selected in the Acceleration Crows Group – an elite squad of only 16 players designed to help the State’s best players graduate from the SANFL and State teams to the AFLW. The group trains with the AFLW team and are receiving much more one on one coaching and Madi is loving being tested by the sport’s best. “It is going to be so great to have this experience,” Madi said. “Just to be around the Crows and basically being exposed to everything they are, to be not just sometimes training with them but learning about things like nutrition and recovery.” Madi plays in the SANFL for Glenelg and is also in the South Australian Under 18 State team and is hoping to make the final cut there – she has some testing for State selection later this month. And as her football dream is being lived out in Adelaide, Madi is also set to juggle completing Year 12 at Mount Gambier High School. “Basically I live here (Mount Gambier) but almost everything I do is in Adelaide,” she said.

BROOKE TONON Brooke Tonon is a rare athlete in Australian Rules football – she started playing football when her brother took up the sport and while she dabbled momentarily in basketball and netball, she has always made football her focus, even before the pathways DOUBLE CELEBRATION FOR HARNESS RACING CLUB THIS WEEKEND The Mount Gambier Harness Racing Club is hosting its premier event this Saturday night – the Gold Cup – and it will be a double celebration with the club also using the weekend to mark the 70th anniversary of taking up residency at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds.

Known as Greenwald Paceway on race day, the club relocated to the showgrounds seven decades ago – January 22 marking the first race at the new home. So often promoted as a family night out, the sport itself, is littered with family dynasties in terms of training and driving and many of the names from 70 years ago are still part of the sport today. It has seen the club set up an historical display in Mount Gambier Main Corner, on the King’s Floor, to celebrate the past 70 years that will be on show for the entire month of January. Names like Mawson, Shepherd, McCarthy, which is now the Drury family, Kemps, Lattins and Hallions, which is now the Finnis family, the Bourkes, from Portland, and the Dennerts, now the Phillips, are all names entrenched in the history of the club, and now have third and four the generations involved in the sport. And there are other amazing connections including the first secretary W.E. Pyne, who is an ancestor of current Federal MP Christopher Pyne. This Friday night, the Gold Cup Calcutta dinner will celebrate the 70th anniversary milestone, with tickets $36 a head and available through club secretary Maxine Milich by calling 0417 082 029. Shirley Feast, one of the first females to be hands on in the local harness racing industry, will be a guest speaker at the dinner and the celebrations will continue at the Gold Cup with a cake cutting ceremony and official function. For Shirley, she started helping work the horses and look after the horses as a 10 year old for her father Les Hinton and she is still, 70 years later, still trackside whenever possible. As a 12 year old, Shirley drove horses with Young Abudllah one of the first horses with which she formed a special bond, only after having to receive special permission – she was definitely a trailblazer when it came to female participation in the sport, along with the Turnbull girls.

Often when her father travelled to races, Shirley would be left in charge of working the other horses at home.

“He trusted my judgement,” Shirley said. She stayed involved with the horses until she was 27 and had her

At only 15 years of age, she arguably represents the last generation that did not know right from a young age that there was a future in AFL for female players. “The pathways weren’t there when I started but it was still what I really wanted to do,” Brooke said. Brooke has played for East Gambier since taking up the sport and currently is doing pre-season sessions with the club’s A Grade players to improve her overall fitness and endurance. “I have played mainly forward but I do want to be able to move into the midfield and basically play anywhere” Brooke said. She will suit up again in the Western Border Junior Football League for East Gambier in the revamped Under 14 competition. In fact, she is sitting on 98 games and so will hit the 100 game mark in the 2019 season.

“I think playing against the boys has really helped my football because they are stronger and probably

go a but harder at it,” Brooke said. Brooke is one of 30 players selected in the Adelaide Crows Academy following her performances for Glenelg at Under 17 level in the Statewide Super Shield Season last year and she is also training with the Glenelg Open Women’s team and is part of the Under 16 South Australian State squad. Brooke tried to model her game on GWS player Alicia Eva and also, as a Hawthorn supporter herself, admires how Liam Shiels goes about his footy. “Alicia (Eva) is basically the same build as me so that’s why I’ve really watched what she does,” Brooke said.

LOCAL SPORT PIONEERS START TO LOCK IN COACHES AND PLAYERS FOR 2019 SEASON The clock is ticking for the Mount Gambier Pioneers after earning a call up for a men’s and women’s team in the 2019 South Australian Premier League competition.

The uncertainty surrounding the club’s future, only settled days before Christmas, has meant the club is behind the eight ball in terms of recruiting, and with other restrictions placed on the franchise about where they can source the players required to put a competitive team out on court, is certainly making for a challenging few weeks but the pieces are starting to be put in place. The Pioneers Men have signed their first import with East Carolina University’s Kentrell Barkley set to arrive in Mount Gambier early next month. The 6”5 recruit was in East Carolina’s starting five for three consecutive seasons, averaging low double figures in points and pulling in around seven rebounds a game.

Men’s head coach Richard Hill said Barkley would have attracted his attention if the club was still playing a SEABL level competition. “Kentrell is an outstanding basketball talent who is sure to excite our tremendous fans,” Hill said. “His versatile skill set and the ability to play a number of positions is vital as we look to replace the bulk of our squad in such a short time frame. I am really looking forward to Kentrell’s arrival in the first week of February. It is hard to imagine we will be playing our first game in six weeks. We have a lot to get done in a short time and Kentrell will be a huge part of that.” So will skipper Tom Daly, who remained committed to the Pioneers right throughout the drawn out saga, as the only player who had signed on for the 2019 season when the collapse of SEABL and uncertainty surrounding the Pioneers being placed into a suitable competition for the 2019 season. He will now be joined by multi-championship team mate Erik Burdon. “I got a few offers from different teams in different leagues but I always wanted to hold out for the Pioneers and see what happened,” Burdon said. “I held out as long as possible. Everything the board have done, and the club, to keep the team going has been amazing and I am glad I can be loyal to the club after all that hard work.” Burdon describes the 2019 season as a changing of the guard. “Tom (Daly) and myself are the only players left from the glory years,” he said. “But it’s going to be fun to work with the younger players.

There is a lot of local talent coming through.” A quirk of the 2019 Premier League draw sees the Pioneers’ first match at Hillcrest – the home of North Adelaide – the club where Burdon grew up. “I loved 500 metres from the stadium, I was there every chance I got – I even had a key to the stadium,” he said. It was his home from the age of eight to 24 and to return in this rebuilding phase for the Mount Gambier club, with Burdon having morphed from rising talent to established star and team veteran, is wonderful synergy. The second match of the Pioneers’ season sees them taking on Daly’s former club – Sturt. The club is also set to secure the services of Tom’s brother Sam, who is currently training with the Sydney Kings, so the starting five is certainly starting to take shape. The Pioneers will make five trips to Adelaide during the season, playing double headers and there

are even four or five weekends which will be match free. “Basketball Australia has also been checking up on us to make sure things are going OK and we have really appreciated that,” Hill said. “I just want to make sure we can compete at a level that will get us back to where we need to be.” The women’s team has also been busy securing signatures and their first import has been locked and loaded with Californian Amanda Frost, who has most recently been playing in Australia for Gladstone, in Queensland, is set to headline the Pioneers return to women’s competition. The 27 year old is a dynamic player who will bring experience and an X factor to the women’s team. The 5”8 guard attended Northern Arizona University, is known for her three point shooting, accurate passing and strong defensive mindset. It is the first official player signing for the women’s franchise but a strong coaching panel has been assembled, knowing there will be plenty of young, inexperienced local talent set top represent their city in the Premiers League. Championship skipper Matt Sutton is heading up the women’s program and he has been joined by former WNBL player Melissa Russell and experienced Lakers and SA Country coach Bryan Green – that local duo are thrilled to be playing their part in the rebuilding of the women’s team. “When Suttsy (Matt Sutton) said he was going to coach, even though I have so much on my plate, I just thought it was something I wanted to be a part of, in fact had to be a part of,” Russell said. Arguably Mount Gambier’s most famous basketball expert, spending time at the Adelaide Lightning and Townsville Fire, Russell’s career was eventually cut short by injury but she is keen to use her own experience at the elite level, and her renewed interest through her coaching of Lakes teams, to help mould the young talent ready for the Premier League.

Russell is also using her extensive basketball contacts to see if she can recruit some more talent to the region to boost the playing stocks of the newly established women’s program. “I just hope the local girls realise the amazing opportunity they are getting,” Russell

sad. “Normally they would have to move away from home to play in a higher league and end up doing a lot of training and not a lot of court time but this new Pioneers women’s team will give them a real chance to spend a lot of time on court to develop their game.

They will learn so much playing alongside and against elite players. It means local players can now see a real pathway if they work hard.” Russell believes women play basketball slightly differently to men and that is where her own experience will come to the fore alongside Sutton. “They play a more thinking game as not many players can rely solely on their athleticism,” she said. “You really need to concentrate on the fundamentals and technique. We’re just not built the same as men.” Russell has enjoyed the highs and lows of elite sport and she can’t wait to use that to mentor the region’s rising talent. “I think Matt, Bryan (Green) and I complement each other – we all have different styles of coaching.” Green, who was part of the support staff for the Pioneers 2013 championship victory, is looking forward to being part of the women’s team in a coaching role. “It did come as a bit of a shock to me when I was asked,” Green said. But he is looking forward to the challenge, after deciding he could juggle Lakers, SA Country and now Pioneers roles. “It is not only exciting for me but also for local players,” Green said.

“We’ve lost so many players over the years to university and because there’s no pathway here for females and this changes that.” He couldn’t help but dream of what a team with the likes of Brenna McKay, Georgia Green, Rachael Hines and Brianna Walters could have done but Green is very familiar with the local talent in line to be part of the Pioneers line-up and he is looking forward to watching them develop. “I think we will definitely be competitive and that’s all you can ask,” he said.

Gina Raisin is set to fuse two of her greatest passions – art and the media – as she embarks on a 12 month project courtesy of a Regional Arts Fund grant of $10,000. The visual artist spent around three decades working in the media and on film productions and she is now combining her newfound passion for the arts – a career she started pursuing six years ago – with her one time career.

The 12 month project, titled Hungry Like A Wolf, will see Gina working side by side with mentors James Dodd, a fellow contemporary visual artist based in Adelaide, and Heath Franco, a video artist from Sydney. Gina will also enjoy a residency at ACE Open, a gallery space in the Lions Arts Theatre adjacent the well known Jam Factory, as part of the project and it also enables her to access the Apple Suite at the Riddoch Art Gallery.

“James (Dodd) is a really successful contemporary artist and an academic and I chose him around how to control a work and to have it more resolved before you even start,” Gina said. “He is my big picture, global kind of mentor.”

Gina’s connection with Heath dates back 18 months when the Sydney based digital artist was showing at the Riddoch Art Gallery, in Mount Gambier. “His stuff is really kind of out there,” Gina said. “He is one of those risk takers and that’s what I want to tap into with him.”

Gina is Sydney bound in April to spend a week with Heath and will also spend several days with James at his Adelaide studio as her Hungry Like A Wolf project begins to take shape.

Her 10 day residency at ACE Open is in September. “There’s an apartment and a studio and that will give me an opportunity to be isolated and just immerse myself in the work which is obviously the aim,” Gina said.

The plan is to have this project built by the end of this year so she can show the new work in 2020.

Gina decided the Hungry Like A Wolf title encapsulated perfectly her foray into the arts. “People are always telling me to slow down but I am 56 and time’s running out to do everything I want to do as an artist and I have only been doing this six years, so yes I am hungry and want to keep moving” she said. “But on the flip side I do know I need to slow down, to take my time, and to just stop and learn and grow.”

Dabbling in the digital arts was really a natural progression, given her background in movie and television production, as well as her time at the Mount Gambier City Council, where she ran short film courses and ran a mini drive-in in a city carpark, among her many projects.

But now she is again the student – learning how to put together a storyboard and basically the processes for creating a large scale work or exhibition. “Also I am so out of touch with technology – it has changed so much,” Gina said.

MOVING INTO THE DIGITAL ERA

At last year’s Art In The Sticks, the popular October long weekend art event hosted by Lucindale artist Hamish MacDonald, Gina dabbled in the digital art genre with a piece on feral cats and the damage they do to the environment but she admits it will be a steep learning curve as to how she translates the vision she has in her painting practice into this new area of digital art.

Gina’s inspiration comes from Swiss video artist Pipilotti Rist. “I saw her work at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney and it was the most amazing, immersive digital exhibition I had ever seen,” Gina said. “I thought, this is what happens in my imagination.”

Knowing the Swiss artist was the same age as her also inspired her to follow this path and in a twist of fate, Heath Franco has worked with Pipilotti Rist, installing that very exhibition that captured Gina’s imagination.

Gina is also working on a 500 word piece for publication as she looks to delve into the academic side of the visual arts, following a three day workshop in Adelaide where she was one of only four South Australian’s chosen to be part of the Writers Hothouse. The Regional Arts Fund is a Federal Government initiative in conjunction with Country Arts SA.

1/4 cup pistachio kernels 1 1/4 cups coconut oil 1/4 cup honey 1/4 cup almond, brazil and cashew spread 1/4 cup raw cacao powder

Method Grease a 16cm x 26cm slice pan.

Line with baking paper, extending paper 2cm above edge on all sides. Place chia seeds and 2 tablespoons water in a small bowl. Stir to combine. Stand for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until water has absorbed and mixture is thick. Meanwhile, place cereal in a large bowl.

Using your hands, lightly crush.

Add coconut, apricot, sultanas and 2 tablespoons pistachios.

Stir to combine. Place coconut oil, honey, spread and cacao in a small saucepan over low heat.

Cook, stirring, for 3 to 4 minutes or until melted and smooth.

Bring to a simmer. Remove from heat. Add to cereal mixture with chia seed mixture. Stir well to combine. Spoon mixture into prepared pan, pressing down with the back of a spoon to level. Sprinkle over remaining pistachios and extra coconut.

Cover. Refrigerate for 4 hours or until set.

MOTOR SPORT LINES SET TO DEFEND KING’S CHALLENGE TITLE

After a tough start to the 2019 Australian Country Cricket Championships in the T20 competition, the South Australian Outbacks continued to struggle in the 50 over format. But there were still some heartening performances by the local representatives, including skipper Matt McInerney (North), who top scored for the Outbacks with his 70 against New South Wales – the only game the Outbacks won over the week long tournament.

Mundulla’s Luke Wiese also played his part in that victory, taking 3/14, while Nick McInerney and Kieran Ashby chipped in with a wicket each in the 90 run win.

Dion Stratford’s 21 and Ben Parish’s 2/19 were the best performances in the loss to Queensland, with Ashby again having an influence in the ball in the clash with Western Australia, taking 2/39 from his eight overs in a match where most of the other bowlers were smashed all over Vibert Reserve as the WA line-up compiled 6/304.

Ashby also contributed 19 in the run chase, with Matt McInerney making 29 but the Outbacks were skittled for 136. Wiese was a wicket taker again in the final clash of the championships, against Victoria, as was Parish, who also made 19 with the bat in what was a disappointing end to the championships for the SA line-up – a 125 run loss to the Vics.

To the letter pf the law this Thursday night is the 25th King’s Challenge, the Borderline Speedway’s premiers stand alone sprintcar event, that was established in 1995. It has been washed out three times over that period but the weather gods look to have smiled on the 2019 anniversary event and the field will be as classy as ever. Defending champion Steve Lines returns to his home track to defend the coveted title and testament to the quality of the race is in his post victory comments last year. “I actually think the King’s Challenge could even be tougher racing than the national titles because you have the Americans in there as well.

In a field like that you have to qualify at the front so you get the best of the racing,” Lines said, 12 months ago. The 2013 World Series Sprintcar champion and two time King’s Challenge winner has enjoyed a strong season thus far and would love to successfully defend his title. But as he rightly points out, the quality of the field means this is one of the toughest races on the calendar to actually win. Reigning national sprintcar champion Kerry Madsen is headed to the Glenburnie track this Thursday, he is currently leading the World Series Sprintcar championship and is the only Aussie driver to win back to back King’s Challenge titles – he did that in 2015 and ’16. James McFadden, who, along with Lines and Madsen, rounds out the top three in the World Series Sprintcars this season, is also set to contest the race, having yet to have claimed the

Robbie Farr is gunning for his fifth King’s Challenge trophy, in what looms as a field of around 50 drivers. Gates open at 4pm on Thursday night, with Hot Laps starting at 5pm and racing at 6pm. The junior sedans will provide the support program with Penola drivers Brad and Sam Gartner, as well as Mount Gambier’s Ryan Harry and Matt Michelson will keep the local fans interested, while for the long time supporters of speedway, a demonstration from around 10 restored Super Modifieds, the pre-cursor to the sprintcar, will also be on track.

Previously advertised ticket prices for 12-16 year olds have been modified and are now only $15 entry to this premier night of racing.
