It’s GAME ON for the Casterton Kelpie Association this June long weekend as it prepares to set a new world record for the price of a Kelpie working dog.

The iconic weekend long festival recorded a world record price for the sale of a Kelpie in 2018 reaching a staggering $22,200 and attracting worldwide media attention.

However, the benchmark was broken earlier this year when a three and a half year old bitch bred by Eveready Kelpies of Woodstock sold at a Jerilderie auction for a staggering $25,000.

“It is game on,” Casterton Kelpie Association president Karen Stephens declared this week.

“Our committee is looking to break this record this June long weekend as we attract some of Australia’s top Kelpie breeders.

“We all know the Kelpie can do the work of seven men providing efficiency and cost savings to producers, but most importantly they are a beautiful companion there to serve you and your family.”

Sunday’s Australian Premier Working Dog Auction at Island Park is expected to attract more than 60 vendors with dogs showcasing their talents in the pen before being placed up for auction.

This is followed on Monday by a Working Dog Training School, with some of the country’s best trainers sharing their best tips for refining a dogs skills.

It is the Saturday festivities which stop traffic with the street closed off

as Kelpie owners show-off their dogs unique abilities in a series of endurance and skill tests with city based Kelpie dogs taking on their country farming cousins.

Among the attractions is the Kelpie Hill Climb, an action packed race up Casterton’s iconic Blueberry Hill racing around the Fleur de Lee, or the Stockman’s Challenge which includes an obstacle course for horse, rider and kelpie to achieve.

For those looking for speed the Kelpie Dash, a 50 metre sprint in the town’s main street is a challenge whilst Kelpie Pinball tests the dogs patience as it guides Indian Runner Ducks through an obstacle course.

The Kelpie High Jump is always a crowd pleaser with dogs this year vying to beat the world record of 2.951 metres jumped by Bailey owned by Tegan Eagle in 2016.

For those looking for a test of endurance there is the Kelpie Triathlon

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - GLAD THAT’S OVER AND DONE WITH… By ROBBIE TANSEL Well, another federal election is out of the way. I guess we all knew that he would probably win.

The honest truth is I don’t think any of us were going to be over-excited regardless of whether he won or the other guy.

Did he run a particularly striking and successful campaign? Not that I noticed.

As far as I can tell, he was simply in the right place at the right time.

Do I think he’ll make a good prime minister? Again, as far as I can see he doesn’t seem to have any particularly redeeming features that he will bring to the role.

I’ve done quite a thorough analysis of what I think he will contribute to our country. I think we’ll look back years from now and say things like, “His most outstanding quality was that he could turn oxygen into carbon dioxide. To continue performing that complicated chemical reaction, with such limited intelligence, is really very impressive.”

Luckily we all know that it’s only a matter of time before he gets knifed by his party colleagues and then we won’t have to see his slimey mug on TV any more. Australian politics continues to be like if Game of Thrones was made into a reality television programme so he won’t be prime minister for long.

It’s not just that he doesn’t have much going for him. The people around him are a bunch of knuckle draggers as well. I wouldn’t trust his team to run a barbecue at Bunnings, let alone to run the country.

The fascinating thing at this point is that I’m writing this article before the election yet everything I’ve said still makes sense regardless of which party is now in power (unless we’ve got a hung parliament or we’re still counting votes, I guess).

If the election campaign has shown us anything, it’s that neither side really has much in the way of policies.

There certainly hasn’t been anything groundbreaking that makes one or the other stand out.

The whole campaign strategy on both sides seems to have been, avoid standing for anything or having a strong opinion on any issue.

Labor’s attitude seems to have

been, “nobody really likes us, and we don’t have anything that would really encourage people to vote for us, but maybe if none of our candidtates say anything dumb, we’ll get votes because people are bored with the Liberals.”

The Liberals’ attitude appears to be, “if none of our candidates say anything dumb, people might remember that we haven’t done anything drastically wrong, and decide to stick with us.”

Both sides have had the attitude that their best chance is not to say anything and to generally avoid standing for anything or having policies.

The underlying theme is, our words and ideas are more likely to lose us the election than to win it. And now one side or the other is in power and will have to do and say something. It’s kind of part of the job.

Australian politics at the moments reminds me a lot of tennis. Back in the 80s there were players with

personalities. Obviously you had the John McEnroes, Pat Cashes and Boris Beckers of the game. The game was exciting to watch. Fast forward to today where the players are boring old white bread. Likewise 80s Australian politics had personalities. Keating, Hawke (RIP) and even Howard. They had a vision and tried to do something.

As much as Clive Palmer is quite obviously a moron, at least he’s prepared to say something and give us all a chance to hate him (an opportunity that we’ve all taken up, right?) At least he has a policy (create laws and policies that will allow him to make more money and ruin more of the country by mining it.)

PORTLAND LIBRARY CELEBRATES The Glenelg Libraries will join libraries all across Australia this week to celebrate Library and Information Week, offering a bumper program of events and the rollout of a number of exciting changes to the library service.

Library and Information Week will also see the introduction of a number of changes to the library service. IT’S ALL ABOUT PLAY A day devoted to playing – that is what is coming up on June 1 as the spotlight is turned on the importance of children having plenty of time for play in their young, developing lives.

An initiative of the International Toy Library Association, the June 1 celebrations are set to converge on the Mount Gambier Toy Library as they look to not only showcase the importance of play but also their extensive resources to help make that play enjoyable and, in many cases, educational.

Having the spotlight on play is giving the local toy library a chance to promote itself in a bid to boost membership and, in turn, the volunteer base.

The Toy Library will be open from 10am to 2pm, extended from its usual Saturday hours of 10-11.30am, with designated play areas set up , including role play activity toys, a baby corner, an

The Lions Club will be providing a barbeque and there will be coffee from Joanne’s Espresso Express all on site.

Organisers are hopeful not only will current members support the extended day of play but that potential new members will come and see just what the Toy Library has to offer.

Depending on your level of membership – gold, silver or bronze – you can borrow toys for a two week period, allowing kids to continually update what they are playing with and never getting bored.

“Kids just love it because they can pick whatever they want,” member Robyn Howard said.

“It is also great for some of those big ticket items that you can’t necessarily afford or don’t have room for at home but can borrow it from the library and

still get the enjoyment out of it.”

There are puzzles, games, cubby houses. costumes and everything from A-Z and the committee are always looking to update the collection, which is well maintained.

“We are currently working on new puzzle packs and we have a large part of the collection set to be shelved soon,” Robyn said.

Grimms’ Rainbow is one of those popular toys that basically has not been back in the library since it was purchased – it is constantly on loan.

“We are always trying to match up our toys with what is popular,” Robyn said.

For people who sign up as member volunteers, there is a membership discount and it usually means two shifts

a term manning the Frew Park facility.

“We always work around everyone’s families and commitments when we sort out the shifts,” Robyn said.

The library is also moving with the times and moving from a strictly cash economy to being able to use EFTPOS. The Mount Gambier Toy Library is open from 10-11.30am on Mondays and Saturdays.

Gold membership is $55 and allows access to nine toys; silver membership is $45 and covers six toys and bronze membership is $35 for three toys.

The theme of World Play Day this year is Play is a Right, which is in keeping with the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child.

The Mount Gambier Toy Library is in the John Frew Centre at Frew Park.

SYMPHONY PROGRAM RELEASED The Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra announced details of its 2019 program last week.

In announcing plans for the 2019 season orchestra spokesperson Kinta Wilson said this year’s program combines traditional classics from Verdi, Handel and Strauss, which they know their audiences enjoy, with the everpopular Last Night at the Proms theme.

The orchestra is pleased to announce a matinee concert to be held in the Millicent Civic Centre, on Sunday, June 30 - the first time the orchestra has taken its program to MIllicent. Due to the exciting refurbishment of the Naracoorte Town Hall, the orchestra is unable to hold its usual Naracoorte concert this year. “We looked into many local options for a temporary relocation for the 2019 concert, however, due to accessibility requirements and the need for a grand piano we are not able to give our Naracoorte audience an appropriate venue,” said Mrs Wilson.

“We are looking forward to performing for a Millicent audience, broadening our reach of local performers to local audiences.”

Rehearsals began in April, preparing for the two performances - one at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, on Saturday, June 29, and the Sunday, June 30 matinee, at the Millicent Civic Centre.

The orchestra will be conducted by Angus Christie.

This year’s program will follow a slightly different format to past years.

During the first half the orchestra

will present a collection of traditional classical pieces featuring local talented soloists, followed in the second half with a “Last Night at the Proms” theme.

The orchestra will be joined by the Limestone Coast Symphonic Chorus and audience participation is strongly encouraged.

Local soloists represent the orchestra’s wide reach across the Limestone Coast. Mount Gambier father and son duo Gary and Jordan Mansell will perform together a Double Piccolo Trumpet Concerto. Soprano, Naomi Summers will sing “Air de Louise” with orchestra and Daniel Lynn will present the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 21.

The orchestra’s focus on regional composers continues this year with Michael Lofting, composer and LCSO viola player, showcasing his composition Steam.

Works from the classical tradition will include pieces by Verdi, Handel, Strauss and Sullivan.

During the Last Night at the Proms, the orchestra and choir encourage audience participation with Jerusalem, Rule Britannia and “Pomp and Circumstance” to name a few.

“The Limestone Coast musical community certainly looks forward to the orchestra’s annual season which has become a fixture on our regional arts calendar”, Ms Aldersey said. “We are thrilled to be welcomed by the Millicent community to present our Sunday matinee performance at the Millicent Civic Centre “.

Wattle Range Council is currently seeking feedback on a proposal to install CCTV surveillance cameras in and around the Jubilee and Domain parklands in Millicent.

“Council has had to address a number of incidents of vandalism in the area over the years including damage to the playground, skate park and BBQ facilities,” Wattle Range CEO Ben Gower said. “These incidents have resulted in heightened community concern and significant costs to Council for the repair or replacement of damaged assets. There are exciting developments emerging in these spaces and these measures should act as an important deterrent to vandalism & antisocial behaviour, protecting the community and its assets.”

The project is being funded by the Federal Government, under the second round of its Safer Communities Fund for security infrastructure, which was announced in June last year.

As outlined in the scope of works, the system will monitor Jubilee Park, the Rotunda parklands, the Civic & Arts Centre carpark, Domain playground & skate park and the Ridge Terrace tennis courts area.

Also included in the Millicent Parklands Master Plan is additional

mains power and solar lighting, which will illuminate crucial areas, increasing safety and enhancing the effectiveness of the security system.

The closed-circuit surveillance cameras will be managed by council internally, with an organisational procedure developed to control access to not only viewing but also storage of all security footage.

Appropriate signage will be installed advising visitors to the parklands that cameras are present.

Mr Gower invited community comment on the proposal. “We would like to invite community feedback on this proposal, to ensure that the broader community is comfortable with the scope of this important project,” he said.

WHEN SPORT & ART COLLIDE The Riddoch Art Gallery will launch the touring exhibition Play On: the art of sport, this Friday at 6pm. A range of programs celebrating sport will follow to appease all sports fans.

A NETS Victoria, Ian Potter Museum of Art and University of Melbourne touring exhibition, Play On: The art of sport celebrates 10 years of the Basil Sellers Art Prize, the prestigious and distinctively Australian biennial exhibition reflecting upon one of Australia’s great national obsessions – sport.

The exhibition features the winners and other key works from all five instalments of the prize and brings together diverse explorations of the personal and collective significance of sport and sporting culture from some of Australia’s most accomplished artists including Tony Albert, Richard Bell, Daniel Crooks, Tarryn Gill and Pilar Mata Dupont, Jon Campbell, Fiona McMonagle, Richard Lewer, and Gerry Wedd.

“Sport cuts across society like few pursuits,” NETS Victoria Director Mardi Nowak. “We expect the exhibition will really connect with regional audiences and give communities an opportunity to see some of Australia’s most exciting, leading and emerging Australian artists.”

The exhibition aims to blend art and sport as two universal languages of humanity to engage new audiences and address broader issues such as gender and race relations. Some of the themes explored include sport culture, gymnastics, AFL, running and community sport.

“It goes even deeper: many hidden parallels between the arts and the sports are presented to us in this exhibition, as they both enable us to cross between cultures, communicate and express ourselves in an emotional, mental, and physical sense,” Riddoch Art Gallery Director and Manager Arts and Culture Development Dr Melentie Pandilovski said. “Persistence, balance, surmounting mental and physical circumstances, and being very driven are also attributes that connect arts and sports.”

Artist Gerry Wedd said art and sport had been integral in his life and practice.

“Surf culture has permeated through my work for a long time,” he said. “It is an honour to be part of this exhibition.”

Wide Angle Film Festival aligns with the Play on Sport exhibition and features award winning international short films reflecting the lived experience of people with a disability. It will screen at the Main Corner on June 5, from 6pm to 8pm, and July 10, from 11am to 12:30pm.

“The first screening presents films that include animation, live action, drama, comedy and documentary.

Audiences will witness people pushing against barriers, confronting their fears, grappling with huge life events and creating exquisite works of art,” Dr Pandilovski said. “The second screening is the Children’s Public Program and features short films made by child filmmakers under 12 years of age. All of the films are by, or have contributions from children with a disability.”

For cricket diehards, explore the virtual reality work Summation of Force

by Trent Parke and Narelle Autio. It will screen at the Main Corner from 14 to 16 June 14 to 16 and July 19 to 22.

“Place yourself inside a moonlit backyard as a mythical game of cricket is being played out between two boys,” Dr Pandilovski said. “Created by two celebrated, world class artists Summation of Force will take you on a journey through a dark, surreal and exquisitely beautiful VR work that uses cricket as a metaphor for life.”

In the Main Corner foyer, TransformARTive, an exhibition celebrating the iconic Sherrin Aussie Rules football, will show from June 28.

“Established and emerging South Australian artists, including painters and sculptors, have worked alone or alongside a personality or footy legend to interpret and pay tribute to the Sherrin, transforming a football into an iconic piece of art,” Dr Pandilovski said.

“All of the one-of-a-kind footballs are available for purchase and are signed by the artist and personality, making them the most unique footy memorabilia you will come across.”

An auction event will take place at the Main Corner on June 28 with the footballs on display in the Main Corner and Cave Garden until July 26.

20 beanies of all sizes and colours to the Sunset Kitchen to distribute to the community. The group is led by a volunteer, Val, who dedicates endless hours teaching people the craft of crochet. This is the second year that the group have made such a sizable donation.

Val thought it was important to give back to the community, with the yarn donated by members and the public. The group would love to receive any 8ply yarn which they can turn into blankets for 2020. The Crochet Club meets twice a week on Mondays and Fridays, from 2-4pm, with new members always welcome.

CELEBRATING VOLUNTEERS National Volunteer Week (NVW) is being celebrated this week. NVW is an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers. Thousands of events will be held across the country including a morning tea for anyone who volunteers in the District Council of Grant. The District Council of Grant community is involved in about 140 volunteer organisations throughout the district including those centred around sporting, charity, youth, environmental, education, history, art, seniors and emergency services.

Many members of the District Council of Grant community readily volunteer and put their lives on hold to help keep others safe when called upon, including the wonderful members of the Country Fire Service (CFS) and those involved in the Port MacDonnell Community Emergency First Response (First Response) team, which was the first of its type for the SA Ambulance service. Some members of the First Response team are now accredited to transport patients to hospital and the team is hoping to have all their volunteers accredited, along with the provision of a new ambulance within the next 12 months. The St John Ambulance SA, Mount Gambier Cadet Division, which is a self-

funding charitable organisation, is accomplished at getting volunteers involved from an early age. Currently there are more than 25 cadets and ages range from eight through to 25.

The young volunteers learn first aid, leadership and social skills through St John’s programs and activities. They volunteer at events including the Mount Gambier and District Pony Club and the Mil Lel Show and provide first aid assistance alongside St John adult members helping people in sickness, distress, suffering or danger. Creamy salmon pie 50g butter, chopped 1 leek, well washed, thinly sliced 2 celery sticks, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons plain flour 1 cup Massel chicken style liquid stock 1/4 cup cream 500g salmon fillets, skin and bones removed, cut into 3cm pieces

1/2 cup frozen peas 2 tablespoons grated cheddar 1 teaspoon dried tarragon 1 teaspoon lemon rind 1 sheet quality puff pastry, just thawed 1 egg, lightly beaten Truss cherry tomatoes, roasted, to serve

Method Preheat oven to 220C or 200C fan-forced. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook leek and celery, covered, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until softened (but not coloured). Sprinkle with flour and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Stir in Massel Liquid Stock Chicken Style and cream until smooth. Add salmon, peas, cheddar, tarragon and rind and stir to combine.

Season. Spoon into a 1L (4 cup) pie dish. Cut a 25cm circle from pastry. Place over pie dish and press sides down to seal. Brush with egg. You can use the pastry cut offs to decorate the pie. Brush with egg. Bake for 30 minutes or until pastry is golden and puffed. Stand for 5 minutes before serving. Serve with roasted truss cherry tomatoes, if desired. lifestyle1.net | 25

IMPORTANT INDUSTRY UPDATE FOR BUILDERS & TRADIES Local builders and associated trades are encouraged to attend an industry update session later this month regarding significant changes to the National Construction Code (NCC) which came into effect this month.

The NCC is produced and maintained by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) and is a uniform set of technical provisions for the design and construction of new buildings and other structures throughout Australia.

“The NCC is the primary document for builders, designers, architects, assessors and surveyors to refer to when designing and or assessing buildings for compliance to minimum requirements to gain Council building approval,” City of Mount Gambier building officer Paul Gibbs said. “The 2019 revision includes many changes from the previous version issued in 2016.” Mr Gibbs encouraged builders and associated trades such as carpenters, brick layers and plumbers to become aware of their responsibilities by registering to attend the 2019 HIA Business Industry Update to be held at the Council office at the Civic Centre on Friday, May 24, between 2pm and 5pm. “Builders, designers and trades need to familiarise themselves with key changes that have an impact on housing, including condensation management, changes to energy efficiency enhanced documentation requirements, revised masonry and cladding provisions and new separating walls,” Mr Gibbs said. The Housing Industry Association (HIA) presentation offers an in depth revision of the 2019 NCC Australian Standards requirements in Volume One (commercial buildings) and Volume Two (residential dwellings) and a brief review of the South Australian planning and building control changes. “It is important for builders and trades to understand any required changes that may impact on day to day work practices and procedures,” Mr Gibbs said. “By attending the HIA Business Industry update, there is also an opportunity to ask questions and seek clarification where required.” Mr Gibbs and consulting Building Surveyor Dave Vandborg recently attended the National Construction Code (NCC) 2019 Symposium in Canberra to update their knowledge and understanding regarding the changes now in force.

BOOK LOVERS PARADISE Book lovers across the south west are invited to indulge in a ‘feast’ of books, craft and literary discussion at an upcoming event in Portland.

The Readers Feast event, hosted by the Glenelg Libraries, will offer a mega book sale of second hand library items at the Portland Drill Hall on Saturday, May 25, from 10am–4pm. “Reader’s Feast is not to be missed for any book lover,” she said. “Throughout the day readers can browse through the hundreds of second-hand library items available to purchase. If you prefer a surprise mix of books, a mystery bag collated by our staff will be on offer.”

For those wanting to learn more about book craft and how to create paper decorations, free demonstrations will be held at 11am and 2pm The event will also provide reading recommendations, with an afternoon of panel discussions and presentations.

At noon the Under the Radar session will reveal titles that may have slipped ‘under the radar’ of the bestseller lists but are reading opportunities not to be missed. Following this, the Reader’s Panel session will favourite local identities discussing their reading habits and their most loved books.

As for the little ones, scavenger hunts will be held throughout the day.

There will also be an opportunity for event attendees to sign up for a Glenelg Libraries membership if they aren’t already a member.

“It’s going to be a jam-packed day,

LIMESTONE COAST SHINES AT SOLAR PRESENTATION The Limestone Coast has done it again, showing unprecedented support for the recent visit from ShineHub officials as they look to reduce their power bills and their environmental impact through use of solar power and batteries. It is the second successive year the Community Solar Program has been showcased in the region, with meetings in Millicent and Mount Gambier to look to get as many people as possible on board the energy revolution. The program is a rare opportunity access free advice that will help you understand solar and battery technology, as well as enabling you to access exclusive bulk buy discounts and claim up to $6000 in SA Government battery subsidies. Local NFP Community Action For Sustainability partnered with Solar Marketplace, ShineHub, to deliver this new offering of the program. The partnership has negotiated bulk buy deals on top quality solar products, as well as payment options to suit everybody and certified installation with trusted local solar companies. The events explained how you could cut your electricity bills by up to 90% with new solar and battery technology starting at just $9,999 or $131/month through the program. The program also offers ‘pay-as-you-go’ options that aren’t available anywhere else across Australia. In last year’s program, the most popular option was the ‘Lease to Own’ product which is exclusive to South Australia and allows you to save up to 42% on electricity costs instantly without paying a cent upfront and that was again the case for the 2019 attendees. Last year 80 percent took up that option in this region and this year it was still easily three out of every four households. The presentations attracted 120 people across three events, with 79 placing orders. The Virtual Power Plant is looming as a popular option as well, allowing communities to take control of their own energy supply destiny. “There was twice as many people interested in that here than we have seen anywhere else,” ShineHub director Alex Georgiou said. “The ‘pay-as-you-go’ option is

GIVE ME 5 FUNDRAISING Southern Cross Austereo’s annual Give Me Five for Kids fundraiser launches next month, with 963 Triple M aiming to make it the most successful year yet, raising more money than ever before for Mount Gambier, Millicent and Naracoorte Hospitals.

Now in its 25th year, Give Me Five for Kids has raised ore than $25.9 million for paediatric wards of local hospitals and children’s health-related charities across SCA’s 38 regional markets.

This year Give Me Five for Kids will be supported by 2019 ambassadors, TV & media personality Shelley Craft, NRL Manly Sea Eagles player Trent Hodkinson and social media influencer Kat Springer, aka The Organised Housewife.

“I am so excited and proud to be an official ambassador for Give Me 5 for Kids 2019," Shelley Craft said, "It’s a great initiative which not only supports sick kids but aims to help their families and the hospitals to make a big difference in their lives.”

Held each year in June, the fundraiser relies on the support and generosity of the Limestone Coast community.

Last year, 963 Triple M managed to raise an amazing $20,000 and he station hopes to eclipse that figure this year.

With an action-packed calendar of events including Triple M rocks Jens Hotel, a wheelie bin walk, on air auctions throughout the month of June, and live broadcasts from various locations in the Limestone Coast, 963 Triple M is imploring the local community to get involved and dig deep, helping Southern Cross Austereo hit its national target of $3.7 million.

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 brown onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 500g beef mince 1 teaspoon Mexican chilli powder 2 teaspoons ground cumin 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes 2 cups grated tasty cheese 420g can red kidney beans, drained, rinsed

420g can corn kernels, drained, rinsed 8 Old El Paso flour tortillas, halved Lime wedges, to serve SALSA 1 avocado, diced 1/2 cup fresh coriander leaves 1/2 small red onion, finely chopped 2 tomatoes, seeded, finely diced 1 tablespoon lime juice

Method Preheat oven to 200°C/180°C fan-forced. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add onion. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until softened.

Add garlic. Cook for 1 minute or until fragrant. Add mince. Cook, breaking up with a wooden spoon, for 6 to 8 minutes or until browned. Stir in chilli powder, cumin and tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low. Simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, make salsa Combine avocado, coriander, onion, tomato and lime juice in a glass or ceramic bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Cover. Refrigerate until required. Reserve 1 cup cheese. Combine remaining cheese, kidney beans and corn in a bowl. Spoon 1 cup mince mixture over the base of a 4cm-deep, 18cm x 21cm (base), 8-cup-capacity baking dish. Sprinkle with 3⁄4 cup bean mixture. Top with 4 pieces of tortilla to cover. Spoon 1 cup mince mixture over tortillas. Sprinkle with 3⁄4 cup bean mixture. Top with another 4 pieces of tortilla. Continue layering, finishing with a layer of bean mixture. Sprinkle with reserved cheese. Bake for 20 minutes or until cheese is melted and golden.

Stand for 10 minutes. Top with salsa. Serve with lime wedges

MISFITS END UP THE MASTERS

BOOMER BEN Ben Simmons has announced he play for the Australian Boomers in the 2019 Basketball World Cup. Simmons was the last Aussie NBA star yet to declare his availability, prompting widespread speculation he would elect not to play in case playing…and risk of injury… jeopardised his potential five-year, $223 million contract extension.

The rain held off for the 13th Annual Mount Gambier Baseball Masters run by the Mount Gambier Legends Baseball Club last weekend.

Unfortunately only a small number of teams participated this year mainly due to the fact that the South Australian Regional Masters were held in Port Pirie only last month and that the weekend chosen for Mount Gambier coincided with Mother’s Day. In the week prior to the competition, the combined team nominated from Naracoorte and Williamstown also had to withdraw due to lack of numbers, leaving a five team tournament made up of the Northern Aces, from Adelaide ,and four teams from Mount Gambier - Central, Legends, Misfits and Tigers.

Each team played four games over the weekend which Legends president Peter Walter described as very successful considering the smaller number of nominations. At the presentation he thanked the sponsors, all participants and especially those who had travelled, umpires and scorers, the Legends volunteers who worked in the bar and canteen, the supporters and generally all who had participated in some way. He said that next year should see the tournament return with a much fuller program with more teams participating. The Masters is expected to be played in early April next year. The gold medallists were the Mount Gambier Misfits which was made up of players from all Mount Gambier clubs and players from Adelaide - the team going through the weekend undefeated. The Mount Gambier Legends were runner up winning silver and bronze went to local club Central.

Medals were presented to players from each team by their respective coach and the Mount Gambier Masters Perpetual Trophy was presented to Misfits coach Ray Shaw by Walter.

LOCAL SPORT CAVALIERS GET THE JOB DONE Division 1 Women Cavaliers 2 def West 0 West Division 1 Women, so long the dominant force in the Lower South East Hockey Association are finding the going difficult in 2019. On Saturday afternoon they were trying to find some form against a confident young Cavaliers outfit.

The first half played out as though nothing had ever changed for West, except on the scoreboard.

They dominated possession with Michelle Clarke

and Rachel Calliss getting plenty of the ball and continued to drive it forward throughout the half. The Cavaliers back three were having none of it though as Karen McGregor, Deb Waye and goalkeeper Kate Fabian continually repelled the young West forwards. West’s younger players were making a strong contribution but they were let down by their inexperience in pressure situations. The last few minutes of the first half saw West magnify their pressure and were

8BALL ASSOCIATION WRAP After eight rounds of the 2019 season of the Mount Gambier 8Ball Association competition only one team remains undefeated at this point, which is Meerkats (formerly Park Hotel), the team has had a couple of line-up changes over the past couple of years and now find themselves with a good combination of strong players that get along well which has no doubt helped elevate them to the top of the ladder this year but one has to think that maybe the change of venue and playing atmosphere has also had some bearing on that. A first half lead was seemingly secured when a penalty corner found the back of the net but their celebration was cut short when the umpire adjudged the shot to be too high. Cavaliers only real scoring opportunity of the half came in the dying seconds when they were awarded their first penalty corner of the game. They too could not capitalise as they fumbled the ball and headed into the break locked at 0-0 with their frustrated opponent. The second half started more even with both teams having early scoring opportunities. Neither could break the deadlock and the third quarter soon settled into a stalemate mostly played out in midfield. The final quarter saw West noticeably tiring. Cavaliers were able to capitalise with Izzy Ladner beating several players on a solo run to grab the lead with ten minutes to go. West defended valiantly throughout the final minutes but could not prevent Cavaliers from scoring again with a goal to Melanie Smailing in the final minutes sealing victory.

SOUTH EAST GOLF VETERANS At Beachport there was a field of 52 who tackled the course on a cold and windy day. Even so, a local, the big strapping John Howe, scored 42 points to run away with the win in First Division. John is normally a par three specialist. Runners up were Rob Carter and John Kamp with 37 each. Second Division was won by Trevor Williams, on 35, followed by Adrian Thiele, on 34, and Tony Wilson, 33. The Nearest The Pins went to Tony Wilson and Bill Beasley. The Ross Orchard trophy went to Rob “Tangles” Cece and Alan Chalk and the ball rundown was to 29 or better. Gordon Fleming, having lost the Robe B championship the day before to president Ian Regnier, had some consolation winning the Scotch, so along with Tangles they had a good trip home to Robe. The next event was at Harrow, a three way challenge on Monday. Next week, May 27, the South east Golf Veterans travel to Casterton to take on Glenelg in another challenge with a 9am start. Following that, the next South East Golf Veterans event is on June 17 at Millicent.
