SHINING A LIGHT ON ORGAN DONATION One is set to end up on a waiting list for a kidney transplant and the other one was one of the first kidney and pancreas transplant recipients in the State and not for the first time, Danielle Horton and Kimberley Telford have joined forces to raise awareness of just how life changing organ donation can be.

In February this year the duo shone a light on organ donation by hosting a screening of the powerful documentary Dying To Live at Mount Gambier’s Oatmill Cinema, using the movie night to also raise much needed funds for Kidney Health Australia.

Now Danielle and Kimberley are looking to spread the message about the importance of organ donation, setting up an information stand at Mount Gambier Central as part of Donate Life Week, which runs until August 4. The stand will be set up Thursday, Friday and Saturday, giving people the chance to find out more about organ donation and to hear from two people who have intimate knowledge of not just a renal patient’s journey and how organ donation can change lives.

Kimberley has lived with type 1 diabetes for almost two decades and experienced the renal failure that can result from that, while Danielle has spent 15 years dealing with her renal failure diagnosis.

“I ended up on peritoneal dialysis for six months and lucky for me, my kidneys regained enough function for

me to come off of dialysis,” Danielle said. But her story did not end there and in 2010, dialysis gain became a part of Danielle’s life. And the life of her then, unborn daughter. “I ended up on dialysis again, this time for two weeks to try and keep my baby in until she was 25 weeks gestation,” Danielle said.

“She was born at 25 weeks and six days, weighing 610 grams and without this life saving treatment neither I, nor my gorgeous eight year old daughter would be here. Currently I have 11% kidney function remaining, which means that in the near future, I will need to go back onto dialysis, then hopefully be well enough to go on the transplant waiting list and then eventually receive a lifesaving gift of a kidney.”

That is the life saving gift already received by Kimberely and for the mother of two, it has been life changing. It was certainly a whirlwind for Kimberely and her family, though.

Her regular blood tests had all been normal and in November 2016 that pattern continued.

By March the following year Kimberely’s health was going downhill fast and that’s when she first met Professor Toby Coates, who has now been with Kimberely every step of the way on her transplant journey. “After I spent that first week in hospital, it did feel like my health suffered a rapid decline,” Kimberely said. A year later she was on dialysis. “I chose to do peritoneal dialysis,” Kimberely said. That is basically removing the toxins in the

blood overnight rather than sitting in a hospital for five hours, three times a week in six week blocks. “I guess I just didn’t want it to impact too much on my life and it was definitely less disruptive,” Kimberely said.

At the time, Kimberely felt tired at times but basically felt like her failing renal health was not really affecting her life – looking back she realises that’s not true. “I look back now and can see I was struggling,” she said. “I thought I was doing OK but really I wasn’t.”

Kimberely’s inability to self-assess is an ongoing issues, with Toby Coates often checking in with Kim’s husband Brenton, as well as Kim, herself, to assess how she is travelling, posttransplant. “Brenton and the boys were amazing and did so much around the house,” Kimberely said.

Getting her name on the transplant list was a huge step for Kimberely, but she was all too aware that being on the list and ending up in the operating room with suitable organs, can be worlds apart = there is no finite timeline. With the benefit of hindsight, Kimberely knows her journey from listed patient to successful recipient was whirlwind by transplant standards.

Her bags were basically packed from day one of being added to the transplant list. “You have to be ready to drop everything and go as soon as you get that phone call,” Kimberely said. “I even gave Toby his own ring tone so I would know when it was him calling.”

Her work was understanding, allowing

her to have her phone accessible at all times and that call did come. Of course, the call is still no guarantee that the transplant will go ahead. You have to be ready to go but you can get there and then find out the organs are not suitable for whatever reason.”

This Donate Life Week, Australians are being urged to grab their ‘plus one’, encourage them to register and double the amount of potential organ and tissue donors.

With more than 1400 Australians on the wait list for a life-saving transplant, every new registration counts and if every registered donor found one person who wasn’t and encouraged

them to register, it would double the number of potential donors.

“We just hope we can convince people to be kind enough and brave enough to say yes to organ donation.”

The South East Junction Mental Health Activity and Resource Centre has 20 teddy bears looking for a new home and there are more where they came from.

They are asking people of all ages to be part of their 2019 Teddy Bear Adoption Project by selecting a bear and then coming up with a back story which will then have them in the running to win the bear in question.

You have until September 1 to complete your entry form and all entrants receive a discount golden ticket to the Teddy Bear’s Picnic on October 19, which is running as part of the Flying High Kite Event, which was first held last year.

“We wanted people to come up with a story to give them ownership of the bear and because we are all bout participation and we think this does help people think about looking after others and how that relates to people’s mental health,” Junction coordinator Nel Jans said.

The Flying High Kite Festival and Teddy Bear’s Picnic on October 19 runs from 10am to 4pm at Vansittart park and promises to be a jam packed day of family fun.

Mrs Thomas, a lady who has knitted some of the teddy bears that will be up for adoption, will be on hand to take about her handicraft, there is the chance to have a photo at the Teddy

Bear Float, there will be teddy bear art & craft at the marquee and also the chance to be part of the Teddy Bear’s Picnic – whether you bring your own, or whether you take up the offer of the $5 hampers on offer with a number of teddy bear themed snacks.

Bookings are essential for the hampers and dietary requirements can be taken into account.

There will also be the usual kite making workshops association with last year’s Flying High Festival, as well as experts on hand to help you get your kite up and flying.

BYPASS ONE STEP CLOSER TO CONSTRUCTION The next step in the process for the long awaited construction of the Penola Northern Bypass is set to be taken with the call for tenders for the project with the contract expected to be awarded late this year. The project includes construction of a new 2.2 kilometre undivided, sealed rural arterial road with sealed shoulders, and a T-junction at the Riddoch Highway where the new Northern Bypass will connect to the Highway to the north of the Penola township. All major construction works on the Penola Bypass are expected to begin in 2020, with completion expected in 2022.

The Federal Liberal and Nationals Government is contributing $11.7 million for the construction of the Northern Bypass, with the South Australian Government providing the remaining $2.9 million. Wattle Range Council also contributed, funding the property acquisition requirements for the bypass.

CZECH MATE FOR LOCAL BALLERINA She went to 13 auditions spanning four months and it all came down to her final audition but former Mount Gambier dancer, 21 year old Katarina Gajic, is now officially a professional dancer, earning a contract with Czech Republic company, the Moravian Theatre. Katarina left at the weekend to start her year long Corps De Ballet contract, which equates to a chorus position, in say, a musical theatre production cast. Given she could have ended up in a junior company or offered an apprenticeship, neither of which pay well or are overly stable, the opportunity to step straight into a company is exciting and overwhelming.

Receiving the offer, which came on the spot after her interview, the final step in the audition process, was just reward for what had been a gruelling few months of pitting herself against often 200 girls for anywhere from only one to three positions. Katarina auditioned

for both ballet and contemporary companies.� I really wanted ballet so I am lucky as that is what I got,� she said. “But obviously for the experience and to have a job, I would have taken anything.�

There were plenty of rejections along the way and she was also shortlisted for other companies, including the Netherlands Dance Theatre (NDT) – the most prestigious option she attempted. “I was thrilled to be shortlisted for NDT, that was amazing, it is such a great company,� she said.

Ironically Katarina thought she was no chance for the Moravian Theatre company. She was unable to attend the open audition and while alternate times are offered for private auditions, dancers usually take a spot prior to the open auditions. “I was in France though so I had to take a time after the pre-auditions and the open auditions and I really didn’t think there would be a spot left by the time I had my chance,� Katarina said. But after completing a class, along with around seven other dancers, and then being asked to perform a solo – she went with the solo she performed at last year’s MJ Dance Studio 30th Anniversary Concert – and then an interview – she was the first dancer offered a contract for the coming season, with what is about a 35 dancer company. “Even then I was lucky,� Katarina said. “I didn’t know they wanted a solo and so fortunately I had the props I needed and the music to do that dance. I was blown away when I

was the first one they asked to join the company. It took a while to sink in but I realised it meant I was their first choice.

It was actually the hardest audition I did in terms of keeping up with the class and the slightly different style so I am just so thrilled.�

The Czech Republic is clearly the furthest she has lived from home but her partner has secured a place in a Hungarian dance company, which is located basically four hours away from Katarina, and one of her closest friends will be based in Germany.

Of course, Katarina has been living away from home since she was 15 years old, moving initially for a ballet scholarship and then completing her studies at Australia’s most respected performing arts institution - the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). Katarina was one of a handful of Australians she bumped into hitting the European audition circuit, with her five auditions

in January, one in February and seven in March, with plenty of Canadian and US dancers rubbing shoulders with the European based hopefuls all vying for such limited opportunities in a professional company.

Katarina will be moving to a share house with a fellow Moravian Theatre dancer and she is excited about what lies ahead. The company has a new director and quite a few new dancers and the program ahead boasts some of her favourite works. “It is primarily a ballet company but they do neoclassical and some contemporary as well,� Katarina said. The highlight looms as Giselle, her favourite ballet, which the company will be performing in November. Even before that, though, Katarina will have to hit the ground running as the company is performing a gala three weeks after her arrival. “I will definitely be thrown in the deep end,� she said.

She is contracted for six days a week with an early morning class followed by a day of rehearsals. Having not been in full time study for six months, Katarina realises it will be a shock to her system to be back dancing eight hours a day. “That’s why I am so grateful Maria (Slape) has been letting me use the space at MJ Dance so I have been dancing while I have been home,�

Katarina said.

The company is also set to premiere a new contemporary work from a Czech choreographer in February but before that another classic, The Nutcracker, which will be performed at Christmas when Katarina’s family is visiting.

Children of all ages have enjoyed hanging out at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex during the school holidays, with various different activities taking place. The school holiday program provides free sessions for children of any age and has included foam picture frames, pizza making, a Teddy Bears Picnic themed story time, Lego Competition, clay bead key rings and Masks.

SUPERSTORE GETTING THE OLD GANG BACK TOGETHER At the end of 2011, Tarpeena Primary School closed its doors, ending the book on a proud history of education in the small timber town.

SENIORS GETTING TECH SAVVY

Simple lasagne stack 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1 large brown onion, finely chopped 600g pork and veal mince 1 carrot, grated 1 zucchini, grated 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tablespoons tomato paste 2 tablespoons plain flour 400g bottle tomato and basil pasta sauce 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh basil leaves 300ml sour cream 1 egg, lightly beaten 2 cups grated pizza cheese 4 mini (19cm) flour wraps

Method Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan-forced. Grease a 6cm-deep, 20cm (base) springform pan. Line side with baking paper, extending paper 2cm above edge of pan. Place pan on a baking tray. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add onion. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until softened.

Add mince. Cook, breaking up mince with a wooden spoon, for 6 to 8 minutes or until browned and cooked through. Add carrot, zucchini and garlic.

Cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until just softened. Add tomato paste and 1 tablespoon flour. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute or until well combined. Add pasta sauce and 1/2 cup water. Season with salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium. Simmer for 5 minutes or until thickened.

Stir in basil. Stand for 10 minutes to cool slightly. Combine sour cream, egg, remaining flour and 1 cup cheese in a bowl. Place 1 wrap in prepared pan.

Top with 1/3 of the mince mixture, spreadinevenly. Drizzle over 2 tablespoons sour cream mixture. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon remaining cheese. Repeat layering with remaining wraps, mince mixture, sour cream mixture and cheese, finishing with remaining sour cream mixture and cheese. Bake for 30 minutes or until cheese is melted and golden. Stand for 15 minutes. Serve with rocket and parmesan.

CHURCH FUNDRAISING FAIR ON THE HORIZON It is an annual event that raises much needed funds for the Anglican Chuch in Mount Gambier and it is on again Saturday, August 10. BRINGING CLASSIC TALES TO THE STAGE St Martins Lutheran College is bringing Dr. Seuss’ much-loved characters to life in, Seussical the Musical, at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, on August 9.

With comedic input from Monty Python’s Eric Idle, this family friendly show mixes music with contemporary re-imagining of beloved children’s stories including, Horton Hears a Who, Green Eggs and Ham and the unstoppable, Cat in the Hat. Seussical is filled with big peppy numbers as well as touching ballads that remind us of the importance of courage, friendship and the power of being unique.

The musical will be performed by students from Years 7 to 12 and features Emily Williams, as the Cat, Ainsley Gillings, as Jojo, Rachael Bird, as Horton the Elephant, and Alyssa Leggett, as Mayzie la Bird.

PASSIONFRUIT GLAZE 125ml (1/2 cup) passionfruit pulp (from 5-6 passionfruit) 2 teaspoons cornflour 55g (1/4 cup) caster sugar 1/2 teaspoon gelatine powder

Method Preheat oven to 180C/160C fan forced. Lightly grease a 4cm-deep, 23cm square cake pan. Line with baking paper, allowing paper to overhang sides.

Use electric beaters to beat butter and sugar in a bowl until combined. Beat in egg yolks. Stir in the sifted flours and coconut until well combined. Use lightly floured hands to press mixture evenly over base of prepared pan.

Bake for 12-15 minutes or until lightly browned. Set aside in pan to cool.

Meanwhile, to make custard, bring milk to the boil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Remove from heat. Use electric beaters to beat yolks, sugar and vanilla in a bowl until pale and creamy. Stir in cornflour then whisk in hot milk. Transfer mixture to a clean saucepan and whisk over medium-low heat for 3-5 minutes or until mixture boils and thickens. Transfer to a clean bowl, cover surface with plastic wrap. Set aside to cool. Use electric beaters to beat cold custard mixture in a bowl until smooth. Add butter and chocolate. Beat well. Spread evenly over biscuit base. Place in the fridge for 2-3 hours or until set. Meanwhile, to make the passionfruit glaze, strain passionfruit pulp and return 1 tbs of the seeds to strained juice. Place cornflour and 80ml (1 ⁄3 cup) water in a small saucepan. Stir to combine. Add juice and sugar. Cook, stirring, over medium heat until mixture boils and thickens slightly. Remove from heat.

Whisk in gelatine until dissolved. Set aside to cool to room temperature. Pour over custard and smooth surface. Place in the fridge for 1 hour or until set. Cut into squares to serve.

LOCALS SHINE AT LEGO EVENT Members from the Limestone Coast LEGO® User Group (LCLUG) recently participated in Brixpo, a LEGO® fan event held in Adelaide. Over two days, the sold-out event saw more than 5000 people pass through the doors to see LEGO® sculptures created by over one hundred talented builders.

Amongst them was local exhibitor Malcolm Sparrow, who displayed his model of Mount Gambier’s old hospital.

Created with more than 25,000 LEGO® bricks, the model was one of the biggest and most impressive builds on display. The accurate re-creation of the hospital, made possible by carefully studying old photos, was well received

by Brixpo visitors.

Another local exhibitor from Mount Gambier, Scott Bradley, displayed a ramshackle cottage creation entitled Misfit Lodge (pictured above).

Scott was thrilled for his build to be awarded second best in show. “to receive an award like that against the many incredible builds on display was very humbling,” Scott said.

Emma Robinson, from Glencoe, also played a crucial role in the success of the event.

Having successfully organised the Limestone Coast’s own LEGO® fan event BrickGambier in 2017 and last lifestyle1.net | 28

year, Brixpo organisers asked Emma to assist in planning and organising their inaugural event.

Exhibitors and the public were full of praise for the event, which was testament to the work put in by Emma and the other organisers.

Members of the LCLUG are now busy preparing for this year’s BrickGambier, which will once again be held in the Show Hall at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds on October 6 & 7.

Last year more than 1500 people attended the event, and this year the event is set to be even bigger, with exhibitor entries already received from a record number of exhibitors from as far afield as Adelaide and Melbourne.

As with prior years, along with incredible LEGO® creations there will be interactive areas, on-site catering and the opportunity to purchase rare and retired LEGO®.

Like many of you, I’ve been interested to see the reaction over the last couple of weeks to Instagram deciding to get rid of the feature allowing users to know how many people have liked their pictures.

The strongest reactions have predictably come from those who have turned the use of social media into a career or job. The bulk of these are people that are labelled as Instagram influencers.

Let’s start the commentary here by querying, what on earth is going on when being an Instagram influencer is a job? I hate spoonfeeding you all, but for anyone who’s not aware, an Instagram influencer is a person who uses the Instagram social media photo sharing app to promote products and is paid to do so.

When I look at my social media, I don’t want someone to be trying to influence me. When I look at social media, I want to see photos of hot chicks, in bikinis that go up there bum telling me about, or holding strategically placed products that they highly recommend…hang on.

If it’s not sad enough that people have apparently created careers about posting photos and plugging something as part of their posts, even worse is the fact that obviously there are people out there who this influencing is working on. Businesses are paying these influencers to photograph themselves with the product or to encourage others to buy it. Presumably people are actually being fooled by this sophisticated influencing into buying products. How silly are we if we look at these photos and think, “This vapid blonde moron with no talents other than the fact she happened to be born looking nice and enjoys eating salads, says I should wear this brand of clothing, moisturise my skin with this cream, and visit this eatery and my life will be fulfilling like hers. Maybe these

aren’t the droids I’m looking for.”

Well done to you if you’ve managed to connect the nerdy Star Wars brainwashing reference to my comment on people being brainwashed by social media influencers. Definitely risky on my behalf to try to put those two things together to create a coherent punchline.

Instagram influencer Mikaela Testa’s reaction was classic. She broke down in tears, claiming she was suffering and it was damaging to her mental health that she couldn’t see how many people liked her posts now. Testa also protested by announcing she would take a break from social media, declaring that she was aware that it wasn’t good for her mental health. True to her word she took herself off Instagram…for one day.

That’ll teach them.

She specifically tried to play on her followers heart strings by describing her social media influencing career as a small business. We all hate to see small businesses suffering, right? It came out days later that her business and social media influencing involves directing people to her “Only Fans” online subscription service where they can pay large amounts of money to see raunchy pornographic photos and videos of her.

Taking your clothes off for money isn’t a business, is it? Isn’t that just called being a porn star? Or a Kardashian?

Testa was also quoted as saying that she put her, “blood, sweat and tears” into her online presence. As far as I can tell, all she did was put on a tiny bikini and pout at a camera. There may have been a little bit of sweat as she lay on the beach sunbaking. There may have been tears when the person taking the cameras didn’t get her good side, or took the photo when she wasn’t ready and had her eyes closed. But I think she’s overselling the difficulty of her career: put on skanky clothes; take picture that leaves nothing to the imagination. Find desperate, pathetic men with sad, sorry existences to spend money to relieve the frustration of their empty existences. Is selling your soul and dignity as a human being, blood, sweat and tears?

This is the world we live in. This is the world we created. What a message to share with the future of our world. Your value is based on how many people like your photo.

BUSINESS AWARDS FINALISTS ANNOUNCED The countdown is on to announce the Glenelg Shire 2019 Business of the Year with 20 businesses in the running to claim the coveted title.

The finalists for the 2019 Business and Tourism Awards have officially been announced, with two nominees vying for an award in each category.

The awards include 10 business and tourism categories and two individual categories. All business finalists are with a chance to secure the overall title of 2019 Business of the Year.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the interest in the nomination process had been “fantastic”. “This year we received more than 60 nominations to acknowledge the achievements of our business and tourism sector across the Glenelg Shire, more than a 30 per cent increase on nominations in 2017,” she said. “It was also particularly pleasing this year to see so many community members taking the opportunity to nominate a local business or supplier of choice, highlighting just how passionate our community is in supporting and celebrating local businesses. The countdown is now on to our Gala Awards night, with only three weeks left until our award winners will be announced. Tickets are selling fast, so I advise interested

businesses and individuals to secure their tickets as soon as possible. With a night of premier entertainment locked in, it will be a not to be missed event.”

Finalists will be interviewed by independent judges from Small Business Mentoring Services (SBMS), who will determine a winner. All finalists will receive a free one-on-one mentoring session with SBMS to seek guidance on any aspect of their business to assist with future growth and planning. The winners of each category and the top prize of 2019 Business of the Year will be announced at the Gala Awards night this Friday at the Portland Golf Club.

Tickets for the gala presentation are available online through Eventbrite at $60 per person, and all members of the community are welcome to join in the celebration. Tickets include entertainment, a three course meal from 2017 Business of the Year Clock by the Bay, and drinks throughout the evening.

The event will feature award-winning comedic magician Dom Chambers, local acting success Jackson Tozer, Triple J rising star Nancie Schipper and popular musician Jason Bull.

LOCAL SPORT LUCY GOES BACK TO BACK Lucy Denton has secured her second gold medal as a South Australian netballer with her 15 & Under State Schoolgirls team going back to back at the national championships with a comprehensive 45-23 grand final victory over Victoria. Lucy was part of the 2018 winning line-up and four of her 2018 team mates were also part of this year’s championship team. Lucy spent much of the 2019 championships a wing attack as well as spending some time in centre and she played wing attack in the title decider. Lucy started playing netball as a nine year old for Millicent in the, then Under 12 competition. “I started playing netball because I had watched mum (Donna Denton) since I was a baby so I have always been around it,” Lucy said.

And she has fallen in love with the sport that has already yielded her those two gold medals from national championships, as well as a swag of premiership medals and individual accolades as well with a couple of association best & fairests to her name. “What I love about the game is that I’m going and doing what I love at the same time as

get to play against some of my friends and it’s so competitive but at the same time we are all having fun.” Of course, being part of a State representative team means racking up the kilometres between her home in Millicent and trainings in Adelaide.

“My mum and dad had made a huge commitment to driving me up every Saturday night or really early Sunday morning to train for two or three hours,” Lucy said. “I have also had to travel some Thursdays as there was some match play that we were doing to get our connection on court.” Lucy will now be focussed on representing Tenison at the upcoming South East regional school competition with the view to qualifying for the Adelaide finals, while preparations are now ramping up for another finals series in Western Border netball where Lucy will be part of Millicent’s 15 & Under and A Grade campaigns. New Zealand icon and Sunshine Coast Lightning mid courter Laura Langman is Lucy’s favourite elite player. “She is so fit and strong and is so consistent in what she does,” Lucy said. “She always puts 100% effort in and is a real leader and is never negative towards anyone.”

STAYING ALIVE

The OneFortyOne Pioneers women are still alive in the 2019 Premier League title race, securing a nailbiting two point victory at the Icehouse. The Pioneers and West Adelaide had already played out two tight contests during the home and away season – the Pioneers winning by eight points at home and then three points away and the elimination final on Saturday night was just as tense. Early in the contest, West Adelaide powered to a 10 point lead but when Pachis Roberts hit her tenth point for the quarter scores were locked away, with the star US import then hitting a clutch three to see the Pioneers one point clear at the first break. The second quarter followed a similar script with the Bearcats getting the better of the early going and setting up a small buffer before the Pioneers worked their way back and at half time it was the visitors by two. The third quarter was all about the skipper with Amanda Frost finding her range from beyond the arc, hitting three threes and finishing the quarter with 13 points as the Pioneers, courtesy of a late Roberts’ three, headed into the final quarter three points clear.

PEARSON WINS CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

YOUNGSTERS PLAY OUT TOUGH DRAW Under 13 Girls Strikers v West Strikers and West played out an entertaining draw in fine conditions on Satruday morning at Blue Lake Sports Park. The first half saw Strikers almost totally dominate possession. Brooklyn Hill and Sophie Walters controlled the midfield and continually forced tbe ball into Strikers attacking circle. It was only due to the outstanding play of Lauren Smith and goalkeeper Lacey Bullock that held Strikers goalless. West’s only opportunity to score came on a penalty corner after the half time whistle. With no keeper in place it was a perilous situation for the dominant Strikers team but Brooklyn Hill was able to make the tackle and clearance at the top of the circle to keep the score tied at 0-0 at the break. The second half was much more even with West buoyed by the momentum they had built up late in the first half. Attacking opportunities had dried up for Strikers and they found themselves facing some of the pressure that West absorbed in the first half. West’s Heidi Collins doing well in the second half, supporting the attack but also making tackles in defense.

Louredes Cleaver was amongst Strikers best in the second half, giving West some scares with quality attack. Strikers continued to work hard and had some opportunities. Rubi Watson was trying hard and getting opportunities but like the rest of her team she found it impossible to get the ball past Collins in the West goal. The late stages saw Paige Chambers working hard for West but also saw her teammates sitting back rather than giving her the support she needed. Lauren with a great run and pass with support from Chambers gave West their best opportunity for the game but it was sent just wide. While the game finished with no score it was an outstanding example of the quality of hockey played at the junior level in the south east. The large crowd was happy to offer vocal appreciation for the efforts of both teams and the entertainment they provided.

The Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association held its last association championship for the 2019 season. Along with the championship, a special presentation took place when Tru Franklin and Nicola Bowditch were presented with cheques from the Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association to help them out to play Junior Singles in the 50th Nationals in Mount Gambier later in August. The Elma Attiwill / Intersport Ladies singles and the Pearson Family/Athol and Sue Malseed Men’s singles, which also incorporated the Ian Simpson Memorial Champion of Champions were then the focus of the night.

In the Elma Attiwill / Intersport Ladies singles, semi-final saw Post-Tel player Keisha Pearson take victory from Kongorong player Heather Glynn 5 shots to 4. The other semi-final saw Serena Bourn, from Glenburnie, beat Veronica Opie from Saints 6 shots to 2. This set up a final between Keisha Pearson and Serena Bourn and Keisha scored one shot on the first two ends. Then Serena started scoring and by the sixth end Serena was one shot down and needed two shots to win on the last end. Sure enough Serena held two shots for the game but Keisha had last bowl to take shot and take victory and win the 2019 Elma Attiwill / Intersport Ladies singles championship 5 shots to 3. In the Pearson Family/Athol and Sue Malseed Men’s singles saw the first semi-final go to Post-Tel’s Stephen VonDuve over Wandilo Player Tony Bowditch 6 shots to 5. In the second semi-final Post-Tel player Zac Pearson beat the Wandilo player Brad Errock 8 shots to 4. The men’s final between Stephen and Zac lined up to be a very close game but Stephen consistently bowled his way to score multiples and had a convincing lead by the fifth end with Zac unable to find his way into the game. Stephen took the win and victory 11 shots to 3 in the 2019 Men’s Singles championship. This saw Keisha and Stephen meet in the Ian Simpson Memorial Champion of Champions, with both of them going for their second Champion of Champions crown. The game was very close with Keisha one shot down on the fifth end but to her best bowling ability Keisha scored two mutiples on the next two ends to defeat Stephen and win the Memorial Champion of Champions named after her uncle. Keisha won the silverware 7 shots to 3 for the second time, the first was in 2014. In the ladies consolation semi-finals Emma Freemantle (Blue Lake Bowlers) defeated Carla Pannell (Moorak Red) 4 shots to 1 and Betty Allen (Kongorong) defeat Janice Knight (Blue Lake Bowlers) 6 shots to 5. The ladies consolation final was won by Emma Freemantle defeating Betty Allen 7 shots to 3. In the Men’s consolation semi-finals Emiloi Castginani (Moorak Red) defeated Gary Walters(Moorak Red) 8 shots to 7 and Ron Ploenges (RSL & District) defeated Simon Attiwill (Wandilo) 7 shots to 2. The men’s consolation final was won by Ron Ploenges defeating Emilio Castginani 7 shots to 3.

BOXING MAKES A TRIUMPHANT RETURN

Despite a slow start to the 2019 Winter Race series due to poor weather conditions, race four proved to be a great hit out with sunny conditions at Kongorong. Cyclists negotiated four laps of an approximately 8km course with a strong head wind in the home straight. The three handicapped groups came together on lap three, but in the last few kilometres lone scratch rider Nick Kidman sprinted home with a convincing win, despite several months away from racing. Second place was consistent club rider Gerard Coote, who held off a sprint attack by third place getter Mark Brooksby.

The Winter Race series continues through to

September with a variety of venues and distances concluding with the Allan Bailey Memorial on September 1. Race five with be on the regular Caves Rd with a distance of 38 km, while race six will prove to be an exciting Individual time trial on Mile Hill, Glencoe. More than 450 spectators made boxing’s triumphant return to Mount Gambier a huge success last month when local professional Sam Dwyer hosted the Mount Gambier Boxing Championships. Supported by IBF World Champion boxer Sam “King” Solimon and boxers from his own gym, alongside nine local fighters plus other athletes from South Australia and Victoria, the 22 bout card was a raging success and the event looks set to return in 2020. Sam Dwyer owns and operates Dwyers Boxing Club in Mount Gambier and has joined the professional boxing ranks. Sam “King” Solimon, now retired from professional boxing, works closely with the Salvation Army in a gym he set up teaching fitness and wellbeing to homeless people. Avid photographer John Baseley captured the event, adding to his diverse portfolio.

Mia Kleinig, Aleisha, Mikayla and Hayley Pearson, Thomas and Nicholas Bignell and Nicole Moran competed over four days. The competition was tough with more than 900 swimmers competing, including many from New Zealand. Thomas, Hayley, Aleisha and Nicole featured in several events in the SA top 10 and Thomas was also Reserve in the Open 200 Breaststroke Final. Mikayla and Nicholas swam PBs in all their events.

Nicole 17-18yo – 100 IM 5th, 100 Breast 6th, 50 Fly 8th.

Aleisha 12yo – 100 Back 7th, 200 Back 8th, 100 IM 10th.
