JOINING THE FIGHT This Thursday, Tenison Woods College will be hosting its own ‘Big Freeze’ event to raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease (MND). A number of students, staff and community members will brave the cold and plunge into an icy pool of water in the Barrie Holmes Stadium.

The event coincides with the annual Tenison Woods College Charity Day, which was initiated last year by 2018 College Captains Evangelia Wichmann and Daniel Ker. The day aims to raise money for local charities, with Reception – Year 12 students participating in fun activities and games over the course of the school day. The Big Freeze will kick start Charity Day at 9am, with 14 staff and students from Tenison Woods College volunteering to take the plunge, including principal David Mezinec.

“It is fantastic to see students committed to supporting such an important cause,” Mr Mezinec said.

“I’m looking forward to being involved in what will be a rewarding and entertaining event, raising critical funds to help find a cure for MND.” There are also 11 members of the Mount Gambier community who have signed up to brave the freezing cold water for the cause, including a number of Pioneer basketball players, Mitchell and Michael from Hit96.1 and Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell.

Expect to see some creative outfits, with participants encouraged to dress up in a costume of their choice.

The stadium will be buzzing with excitement, as students of all ages witness the spectacle.

Health and physical education teacher and Year 9 wellbeing coordinator at the college Brad Maney instigated the idea to host the Big Freeze at Tenison Woods College.

“I have been looking at different ways to encourage student leadership and it became evident to me that Neale Daniher and the annual Big Freeze at the MCG really resonated with our Year 9 male cohort ,” Mr Maney said. “Bringing the Big Freeze to our College has given students a sense of ownership and satisfaction and has been a great way to raise further awareness of MND.” Students have been involved in collecting donations, promoting the event and will help with the setup on the day. A group of Year 9 and 10 boys have also been assisting with the build of the slide for the pool.

Mr Maney said the support of

not only the college, but the Mount Gambier community had been astounding and he hoped the Big Freeze could become an annual event at the college.

Students have set up an online donations page with a target of $1000, which with some generous contributions has already been exceeded. Cash donations will also be accepted at the event. DEMOLTION UNEARTHS HISTORICAL TREASURES

The former Target building on Ferrers Street, Mount Gambier, has been demolished in the past few weeks and is being cleared to make way for the new Coles supermarket development to begin. During the works a foundation stone was salvaged, underneath which a time capsule and an additional historical stone were uncovered.

GLG Developments building contractors Lanskey Constructions found more than they bargained for when they removed the red dolomite foundation stone formerly located on the western side of the Target building.

The stone was originally laid to commemorate the opening of Mount Gambier’s first power station by Mayor of the day C Spehr on 6 March 1924.

Almost 50 years later in April 1973 the foundation stone was salvaged when the electricity supply buildings were demolished and the stone was then incorporated within the former Target store building.

Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin said contractors also found a cairn behind the stone which contained a glass time capsule.

“From what we can piece together from historical newspaper reports, the

time capsule contains copies of old newspapers and documents associated with the site works in 1924 and 1973 and some coins,” Mayor Martin said.

“Council is very excited to receive these significant pieces of history from years gone by and will discuss opening the time capsule to see exactly what it contains in the coming months.”

However, mystery surrounds a stone marked ‘Bienvenu’ which was also recovered during demolition on site.

“We don’t know how the ‘Bienvenu’ stone which is the French word for ‘welcome’, fits into the story,” Mayor Martin said. “We can only assume that it may have come from a house that may have been on the site during the powerhouse demolition process in 1924. If anyone has further information about this, please do let council know.”

Council has negotiated an agreement with developers to preserve the power station foundation stone and reinstall it as part of redevelopment on site.

“The Spehr family are particularly keen to see this foundation stone preserved and no doubt are happy to learn that as part of the final approved site plans, it will be laid at the

internal carpark entry walkway from Ferrers Street and it will incorporate landscaping,” Mayor Martin said.

It is expected the Coles supermarket and speciality shops will be open for business in 12 months. A new ALDI store and speciality shops are also being erected on an adjacent property directly to the northeast of the Coles construction site.

Naracoorte High School Year 11 students Marcie Flynn and Jamie Sincock have been chosen to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) to be held January next year in Canberra and Brisbane. Both girls attended the NYSF Rotary selection day held in Ararat recently where they were asked to give an impromptu speech, be a part of a team debate and finally, interviewed by a small panel of judges as part of the process. The National Youth Science Forum is organised by Rotary Clubs and offers 600 students an on-campus experience at the Australian National University. This 12 day residential program aims at inspiring Australia’s leading young scientists and provides them with the opportunity to visit world class research facilities, meet leading scientists and undertake cutting edge

technology and experiences usually unavailable to the general public.

“I heard about NYSF from our Science teacher and a friend who applied for the 2019 forum, Jamie said. “They both highly recommended it, saying that it would be a great opportunity, and after looking into it myself, I couldn’t help but agree. I decided to apply because it is an amazing chance for me to learn about my future options in STEM. Marcie agreed saying she applied for the National Youth Science Forum because she loves all things science.

“I’m at a stage in my schooling where I’m open to grabbing any opportunities and exploring everything I can before settling on a career,” she said. “By attending the NYSF I really want to gain a deeper understanding of STEM as a whole.”

The program offers the participants insights into where their passion for Science, Technology and Engineering (STEM) might take them. It offers a real-life example of working life, and significantly expands on the “silo” experience of Science and Technology in the school environment. If the students do decide to undertake tertiary study in STEM, they will likely already have connections at their chosen campus anywhere in Australia, which is invaluable.

TARPEENA REUNION At the end of 2011, Tarpeena Primary School closed its doors, ending the book on a proud history of education in the small timber town.

But one more chapter is set to be written in that story with a school reunion, for anyone who attended or worked at the school, set down for October 5 at the Tarpeena Football Clubrooms. From 2-4.30pm there will be a social get together and then a student roll call from 4.30pm. The celebration dinner will be held at 6.30pm and places are limited with bookings essential.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - CULTURAL DIFFERENCES FOR THE EDUCATION OF ALL PEOPLE… By ROBBIE TANSEL I probably should warn everyone that the content of this article may offend some people. But if I did that I’d probably need to do it every week. There have certainly been people over the years who have felt that I sink to very low levels with the content of my articles, but even I think I’m going to new levels this week.

With that sort of preamble, you’re probably thinking, why are you writing this article then? The simple answer, is the message is just too important not to share.

Here goes. As you may be aware, the English are going through a particularly brutal hot spell. We need to keep in mind that the English are different to us. I think it has reached temperatures over thirty and the Poms simply aren’t used to it.

In response to a recent incident, a doctor has warned English women not to put icy poles in their vagina as a way of beating the heat. Come on people.

It’s a scientific term. Stop giggling. The incident involved a woman who had apparently done so with a blue icy pole and was quite concerned that it had left the area coloured blue and wondered whether it would stay that way.

I’m not even sure where to start with this one. How hot, and how desperate do you have to be to beat the heat, to be looking round your house for a solution and come up with, “I could go to the beach or the local pool, or I could stick an icy pole in my vajayjay.” Quite clearly the English are not used to hot weather if this is the best strategy someone comes up with to beat the heat.

My next thought is, do we really need medical practitioners offering opinions about what ladies should and shouldn’t stick down there? I’m happy for you ladies out there to work it out for yourselves. If you think it’s a good idea, give it a go and see what happens.

Does the fact I respect a woman’s ability to make a choice about her body mean I’m a feminist now? Seriously, if you don’t know what should and shouldn’t be in there, then you’ve got bigger problems we’ll need to talk about.

Here’s another thing worth thinking about. I saw this story on a couple of legitimate news websites last week.

Tonight as I tried to find it again, I Googled, “Health warning vagina England” and found articles advising women not to put garlic in there, or parsley, or apple cider vinegar. It seems clear to me ladies, that you need to be really careful what you put in there.

Who would have thunk it? I’ve spent my life thinking that I wish I had one myself

so I could use it to keep my change in.

Maybe that’s not a safe thing to put in there afterall and it’s lucky I don’t have one of my own. I really think someone needs to come up with a comprehensive list of what should and shouldn’t go in there.

The other big concern I have is that I’ve been using a strategy to deal with the opposite issue that we have here in Mount Gambier. Let me explain. In Mount Gambier, we are in the middle of another bitterly cold Winter. To try to beat the cold, I warm up a Chiko roll, and sticky tape it to my old fella like a splint. Is someone able to offer me a medical opinion as to whether this may cause health issues for me? Or would it possibly be better to use a sausage roll?

What else do we not know and need health warnings on? Are there things that shouldn’t be put in our mouths?

Should we avoid putting power tools in our ears? I’m paralysed with fear that I’m putting something in one of my orifices that a doctor would think is actually not good for my health.

The problem with common sense is it’s not that common.

Anyway, stay safe ladies. Putting an icy pole in there might be an effective short term solution, but I think you’d just be better off buying a fan.

"What am I going to do with all this artwork? was a question I heard time and time again from fellow mums.

Nothing achieved this feeling and vibe more than classic print and old-school framing. It was the perfect way to wrap up a childhood of artwork because - simply put - it just looked awesome. 150g (1 cup) self-raising flour 5 eggs, lightly whisked 100g (1 cup) Perfect Italiano Perfect Bakes cheese (cheddar, mozzarella and parmesan)

Method Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a medium non-stick frying pan over mediumhigh heat. Add the sweet potato and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until softened. Transfer to a large bowl. Add the zucchini, flour, egg, cheese and remaining oil. Season well and stir to combine. Preheat the pie maker. Fill the pie maker holes with sweet potato mixture. Close and cook for 8 minutes or until set. Repeat with the remaining mixture. Serve warm or cold.

CHURCH FUNDRAISING FAIR ON THE HORIZON It is an annual event that raises much needed funds for the Anglican Chuch in Mount Gambier and it is on again Saturday, August 10. Running from 8.30am to 1pm, stalls include plants, craft, books, trash ‘n’ treasure, home baked cakes, produce, fresh fruit & vegetables, jams & pickles, prints & pictures, dolls & bears. NATIONAL SKATE PROGRAM COMES TO MILLICENT The Australian Skate Park League (SPL) is coming to Millicent Skate Park.

Skateboarding clinics will be held on Friday, October 11, and the SPL competition on Saturday, October 12, as a part of the SA League. This league makes up one part of YMCA’s national pathway program that visits skate parks in Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, Nothern Territory, Western Australia and New South Wales. The October 12 competition will see competiros across skate, scooter and BMX disciplines and they will all take place at the skate park.

With the addition of skateboarding to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the series presents as a great opportunity for young skateboard enthusiasts to harness their skill base and progress through a structured national pathway.

In addition to the pathway each regional series of the SPL presents opportunities for young people to

gain experiential practical training in skate park event management. The growing network of more than 1450 participants ensures the success and longevity of the SPL, further enriching and celebrating skate park user communities. YMCA in conjunction with VSA (Victorian Skateboarding Association), Skate Australia and participating Local Government Association’s facilitate more than 100 SPL events a year, making up the Australian Skate Park League – the biggest and most established grass roots skateboard, scoot and BMX series in Australia. The Millicent round has been brought to life through a partnership between YMCA SA, Skate Australia and Wattle Range Council.

The new yards were designed by Kattlegear, which previously designed and constructed the cattle loading ramps. The upgrade of the pens will be constructed in two stages followed by the bull pens and unloading ramps.

Tatiara Industrial Repairs is undertaking stage 1 of the construction. The $850,000 first stage of the project will be completed in October. The importance of the Naracoorte Regional Livestock Exchange to local producers and the wider economy is extensive.

STUDENTS GET THEIR HANDS DIRTY OneFortyOne, Tenison Woods College and Noel Barr Toyota together strengthened their partnerships, at this year’s National Schools Tree Day, which was held at the end of last month. Tenison Woods College students were excited to ‘get their hands dirty’ and plant trees in OneFortyOne’s local Pine Forest plantations. This year local native plants were also planted, with the assistance of Nature Glenelg Trust. This strategy was to better represent both the importance of native trees, but to honour the importance of the local forestry industry within our community and ensuring a sustainable resource into the future.

CYCLING EVENT IN THE SPOTLIGHT On Saturday, November 23, Millicent will host up to 5000 cyclists for an overnight stay, as part of their journey from the Limestone Coast to the Great Ocean Road for the Bicycle Network’s annual Great Vic Bike Ride. The participants and their supporters will arrive in Millicent in the afternoon, after having had lunch at Beachport as they pedal their way from Robe, where the event kicks off that morning. In its 36th year, this is the first time the Great Victorian Bike Ride has come into South Australia and Wattle Range Council is excited about the retail and tourism opportunities it will bring.

“Since the initial community meeting held back in June, council has received a number of expressions of interest from groups and individuals who wish to participate in this great opportunity to showcase our region,” council’s director development services Steve Chapple said. “Ideas have included a street party, community lights up event, meals (dinner and breakfast), experiences and attractions, local produce, accommodation, food and wine and more. To obtain a clearer understanding of the various activities that are being considered by the local community, Council now needs to confirm a list of all the planned activities.”

Individuals, clubs and organisations intending to undertake an activity during the visit by the Great Vic Bike Ride, should complete and return the form available the council office or online www. wattlerange.sa.gov.au/GVBR by no later than 12 noon on Tuesday. A second community meeting is being held this Wednesday so that Council provide further information and assist community groups and

organisations with the appropriate permits and forms required for the planned activities. “This is a great opportunity for the community of Wattle Range to create a vibrant event and memorable experiences for visitors to come back and stay another day,” Mr Chapple said.

Honey bubble slice 4 cups puffed rice cereal 2 tablespoons oat bran, lightly toasted 2 tablespoons sesame seeds, toasted

1/2 cup (40g) white marshmallows 1/4 cup honey 80g reduced-fat margarine spread

Method Lightly grease a 3cm-deep, 17.5cm x 27cm (base) slice pan. Line with baking paper, allowing a 2cm overhang at long ends. Place cereal, oat bran and sesame seeds in a large bowl. Stir to combine. Place marshmallows, honey and spread in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 4 minutes or until melted and smooth. Stir marshmallow mixture into cereal mixture. Spoon into prepared pan. Coverwith baking paper. Using hands, press firmly on baking paper to distribute mixture evenly. Remove and discard baking paper. Refrigerate for 25 minutes or until firm. Cut slice into squares.

Serve.

EMERGENCY SERVICES WIN Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell has successfully introduced a bill in the Lower House, which will give Country Fire Service (CFS) and State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers the right to have their say on matters directly affecting their work.

The Fire and Emergency Services (Volunteer Charters) Amendment Bill was introduced into the Lower House by the Independent MP and formally passed last Wednesday.

The Bill was introduced in the Upper House by Greens MLC Tammy Franks last year, following identical bills failing to pass both houses in 2012 and 2015.

Mr Bell said the passing of the bill, which moves both CFS and SES volunteer charters into legislation, means volunteers will receive parliamentary recognition.

“There are around 15,000 volunteers across South Australia performing a lifesaving role in our community who have waited for years to be formally recognised,” he said.

“This legislation creates a requirement for the government to consult with those CFS and SES volunteers on matters that directly affect them, which is basic common sense.”

Meeting with SES Mount Gambier unit manager Simon Poel and CFS operations captain Bob Davis last week, Mr Bell was able to personally deliver the good news.

“The value of the work CFS and SES volunteers provide is immeasurable,” he said.

“These volunteers give their time freely, equalling thousands of hours every year, to attend emergencies and be there for local communities in times of need, while their own lives and work

gets put on hold. The volunteer charters were developed to provide a framework for all parties to work in partnership together, for the wellbeing and safety of the community.This is a measure of respect for those who protect our communities.”

$5000 WINDFALL FOR BREAST CANCER PROJECT The Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group has received a $5000 windfall courtesy of the South Gambier Football Netball Club’s Ladies Champagne High Tea held at the end of last month.

The money is set to be earmarked for the Helping Hand Bag project that provides tangible assistance for patients undergoing treatment for the disease. The sell out event was organised by club manager Robyn Bowd in conjunction with Emma Ryan, Aleathia Holland and Katina Sims and saw around 100 ladies attend the function, as well as contributing to raffles and a silent auction on the day that boosted the coffers. The more than $5000 cheque was presented to Karen Petersen from the best cancer awareness group and she said it will fund nine Helping Hand Bags. “We do have such a generous community and what the girls put together was amazing,” she said.

AWARD WINNING BUSINESS ONLY TWO YEARS OLD Internationally acclaimed art, breathtaking views and servings of an old-fashioned vanilla slice have provided the winning-formula to claim the 2019 Glenelg Shire Council Business of the Year Award, sponsored

Narrawong’s Bay of Whales Gallery and Coffee Shop, owned by award winning artist Brett Jarett and his partner Gerri Torpy, claimed the coveted title with judges highlighting the pair’s “outstanding” efforts developing the two-year-old business.

It was a long dreamt vision to open Mr Jarrett’s home studio to the public to share his inspirational wildlife paintings whilst sharing Ms Torpy’s traditional culinary talents, notably her beloved vanilla slice recipe, was a perfect fit, hitting the taste buds of art lovers.

The gallery, situated on Narrawong’s Mt Clay overlooking spectacular coastal views, has its walls lined with Mr Jarrett’s wildlife paintings, with visitors able to watch the acclaimed artist at work, whilst enjoying the country atmosphere.

Not for profit Small Business Mentoring Service mentor Clinton Bugg judged the operation, noting the gallery had excelled in all nine judging categories, highlighting its excellent strategic planning, marketing and promotion, access and inclusion and overall community benefit.

“This business has singlehandedly managed to revitalise a small community by offering a simplistic product in the highest of quality. They

are enticing visitors by not just offering a product, but an entire experience,” Mr Bugg said.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank praised the Bay of Whales Gallery and Coffee Shop which claimed the overall title from a record 61 nominees, making it the most successful award program to date.

The awards were presented at a sold out gala dinner last Friday night at the Portland Golf Club, hosted by former Portland local, acclaimed comedian and actor Jackson Tozer, with entertainment from Triple J famed artist Nancie Schipper and magician Dom Chambers, who is a semi-finalist in the current series of America’s Got Talent.

“We are extremely proud of the efforts of our business and tourism community who work tirelessly

providing excellent customer service, outstanding products which are assisting to put this region on the map,” Cr Rank said.

Fresh from returning from Baku accepting a UNESCO World Heritage inscription, Budj Bim Cultural Landscape Ranger Aaron Morgan was recognised claiming the Young Achiever of the Year award, sponsored by Civil Contractors Federation, recognising a high achiever 25 years and younger.

Judges noted Mr Morgan’s passion for self-improvement, indigenous culture and country. Despite leaving school at 14, Mr Morgan has worked tirelessly building his skills to forge a successful career as a senior ranger, acting as an ambassador for the unique cultural landscape.

Goodman Group Lawyers’ Kathryn Oswald was named the Employee of the Year, an award sponsored by Assets Real Estate, credited for her reliable and honest behaviour, acting as a motivating influence for the broader team.

ONE WIN AWAY

BACK IN GREEN & GOLD Georgia Hood is back in green and gold and this time she is in California as part of Australia’s Under 19 team at the 2019 Junior Women’s Softball World Championships. It is the second time Georgia has been part of this elite tournament on the world stage, she was part of the last championship team in 2017, that time alongside sister Amber. That 2017 selection shoed Georgia was a star on the rise and her performances in the past two years has done nothing to temper those expectations.

Georgia put in stellar performances at both the Under 19 and Open national championships this year, where she took out the batting trophy and Rookie of the Year honours, respectively, and as a result Georgia got a late call up to be part of both the Summer Slam - a new Big Bash type version of softball that was launched by Softball Australia – as well as the Asia Pacific Cup. The Tokyo Olympics are not out of the question and Georgia’s career is all the more impressive given she is still regionally based, completing most of her training under the watchful eye of mother Tanya. Aside from the usual strength and cardio training that every athlete must endure, Georgia also has to spend hours working on both her pitching and batting, with those two areas of her game being the areas that have seen her burst her way onto the national scene and stay there. She pitches every night, heads to the batting cages every night and fits in a weights session around three times a week. “The pitching and the batting takes around 2-3 hours, depending on exactly what I am doing,” Georgia said. “I would send down up to 150 pitches each session and that takes just over an hour in itself.” That sees her working on the wide variety of pitches all top pitchers need in their kit bag, from her

fast pitch, to her change up and everything in between. Her pitching speeds range from 97kph to 115 kph and working her way towards increasing her speed is always on her agenda. This year was Georgia’s first time playing at the Open National Championships, and she was grateful for the opportunity to face the stronger pitchers and believes, along with facing some top US pitchers in the South Australian competition, has helped her batting continue to improve. A grand slam at the Summer slam is a case in point. “Having mum to know how I should train and the work I needed to do, really helped,” Georgia said. “I have been able to stay in Mount Gambier and still do the right training and get my game to the level it needed to be.” Georgia did have a training camp in June with the rest of the squad and they will be working together now before the August 10 start of the world championships, which run until August 17.

In the end, what was basically an arm wrestle came down to the first couple of minutes of the final quarter. The Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers men, leading by four at the final change, went on a 10-0 run against the Forestville Eagles and never relinquished the lead. The Eagles got as close as nine points in the final stanza but the damage had been done – threes from Sam Daly and Brad Rathjen part of that match turning run. Prior to that run, seven points had been the biggest lead of the match and that was the Eagles in the opening quarter, when Majok Deng and Brad Teys, showed, what the Pioneers no doubt already knew, that they would be the offensive dangers for the Eagles. But in the end, the Pioneers held a one point lead at the first break, the Eagles led by that same margin at half time and then the Pioneers headed into that defining final quarter with a four point buffer. Just as the opening quarter, with the dominance of Deng and Teys, showed who was going to be dangerous for Forestville, the opening quarter also showed the Pioneers modus operandi – sharing the scoring load with six players hitting the scoreboard, including two stunning threes from skipper Tom Daly (top right). In fact, scoring from beyond the arc was one area where the Pioneers did dominate – they hit 10 from 27, while the Eagles hit only four from 25.

Bench points were also where the Pioneers had the better of the stats, with 19 points coming from the home side’s bench in comparison to the Eagles’ six. Where the Eagles relied on Deng, who hit an equal game high 27 points, Teys, who finished with 26, and Greg Mays, who contributed 18, were the mainstays of the Eagles’ scoring, while the Pioneers enjoyed a more even performances – Kentrell Barkley (bottom right) with 27; Tom Daly with 25; Sam Daly, 15, Rathjen, 13, and nine from three point specialist Erik Burdon. Barkley also pulled in a mammoth 21 rebounds, while Dayjar Dickson also hit double figures in the rebounding stakes, with 10. The cream did rise to the top in the final quarter with Barkley hitting nine points and Tom Daly with eight points as the Pioneers secured a place in the Premier League grand final. It does mean, though, that the Pioneers will have to hit the road, with the Premier League grand final deciders set to be played at Adelaide Arena. Forestville and Norwood are now set to face off this weekend in the preliminary final and a chance to take on the Pioneers in the August 17 decider.

PIONEERS WOMEN KEEP FINDING A WAY If you have watched any of the OneFortyOne Pioneers women’s team this season it will come as no surprise to you that when the Pioneers needed a hero it was captain Amanda Frost that stepped up. The US import nailed a match tying three with seconds on the clock in Saturday night’s knockout semi final against the Eastern Mavericks sending the game into overtime and somehow the Pioneers’ season remains alive – taking the first period of overtime by three points to advance to a preliminary final against Forestville this weekend.

The loss was no doubt a tough pill for the Mavericks to swallow, having led by a game high 12 points with six and a half minutes to play in the third, but also enjoying an 11 point lead halfway through the last and still four points clear with two minutes to play. But the Pioneers would not go away, their perimeter shooting a feature of the final, nailing 11 from 32, including four from Maddy Wormald, who had her most productive scoring effort for the season with 23 points, with the Mavericks only nailing six. The sides were barely separated on the stats sheet across the usual key performance indicators of rebounds, shooting percentage and free throws and in the end, perhaps it was the fact, the Pioneers women have spent the season grinding out tight victories that it is now second nature to them and they have developed a self belief like no other line-up in the competition when the match is in the balance. Once again, making a prediction for this weekend’s preliminary final is tough. On April 27, the Pioneers played the Eagles on their home court and fell five points shy, reversing that result in the Icehouse encounter on July 13 with a two point home court victory. But it’s what doesn’t appear on a box score that could prove the difference – determination and self belief.

LOCAL SPORT MAIDEN SENIOR VICTORY FOR RIDDOCH

Race five of the Mount Gambier Cycling Club Winter Series enjoyed favourable conditions with mild winds and temperatures, for a 36km cycle down to Caves Road.

The limit group managed to stay just ahead of the chasing bunches with only seconds to spare before crossing the finish line. First overall, in her maiden senior win, was young female cyclist Pru Riddoch, showing an increasing strength with every race. Second, in a sprint finish with Riddoch, was Louise Abraham, closely followed by Ray Bilney, who took many strong turns over the distance.The fastest time went to scratch rider Chris O’Donnell, who finished fifth overall, but needed another 100 metres to catch the winning group. The juniors enthusiastically completed a 10km race with Elmer Buckland taking line honours with Molly Opperman and Elmer’s brother Eddie Buckland charging home.

STRUCK OUT While most sports have made great strides to take the violence out, introducing fines, yellow cards, red cards etc, professional baseball still has occasions where two teams will drop gloves, clear the dugout and engage in all-in brawls as witnessed a few days ago in the Pirates v Reds game. Hard to believe.

DEFENSIVE DYNAMO REACHES 250

Some players do not provide extensive highlight reel moments in their sporting careers but what they are is reliable and one of the first picked every week because they always get the job done. Morgan Amy is one of those players and she has been doing it for East Gambier now for 250 games. The circle defender, who can also play a role in the mid court, is well known for combining the discipline of tight checking and denying her opponent easy ball, to also hunting interceptions with her ability to read the play. When she saw her milestone game was against reigning premiers Millicent, Morgan would have thought a win to celebrate her 250th match was unlikely but her Bulldogs team mates got the better of an undermanned Saints and she enjoyed the perfect celebration. Morgan started at McDonald Park as a 12 & under player and was only 15, in 2011, when she made her senior debut.

SOUTH EAST GOLF VETERANS At Attamurra, five of 57 players played to their handicap of 38 points. This made it complicated for the card checkers, needing to do multiple countbacks, and so there ensued mass confusion for Captain Max in announcing the results of the most recent South East Golf Veterans event. However finally, 38s in First Division went to the par three specialist John Howe, from Allan Schultz and Ken Whitehead.

Second division went to Glen Tilley, from Adrian Thiele with their 38s, and then Lyndsay Copeman came in third on 37. The Ross Orchard trophy went to the infallible Colin Rex and Ewan Herring. The ball rundown was to 31 or better. The four tee hit off worked a treat, enabling the field to start at 9.30am and the results were all over before 4pm enabling those longer travelers to get home in reasonable time, The next outing is at Naracoorte on August 12, followed by Blue Lake on August 26.

She was an integral part of the glory days for East Gambier junior netball alongside the likes of Tenille Gray and Brenna McKay and is a multi-premiership player. Morgan is not just a valuable player for the club but has also taken on coaching, starting with junior teams, which she has continued this season, where she has also stepped up to share the A Grade coaching role with Tarsh McCallum and Tenille Gray. Morgan is also a player who has represented her association with distinction as part of junior and senior teams and she was part of the 2019 SA Country Championship winning A Grade team, where her strong rebounding and ability to lock down on an opponent were vital.

JACKED OFF More bad news for Swimming Australia with 20 year old Shayna Jack set to receive the maximum four-year ban for her failed drug test unless she can somehow prove her innocence.

Jack had both her A and B samples returned positive to the banned muscle building drug Ligandrol.

SOUTH EAST PLAYERS SHINE AT HOCKEY NATIONALS

Three former members of the Lower South East Hockey Association represented South Australia (SA) at the Under 21 Women’s National Championships played in Lismore last month. Hattie Shand (Naracoorte), Laura Edmonds (Redbacks) and Cody Lewis (West) all pulled on the State tri-colours for the week long event. While the team was quite young, it was a great opportunity for the players to compete against the best in Australia, including some current Hockeyroo squad members. South Australia had a tough draw but managed to finish third in their pool after the minor rounds.

MINOR ROUND RESULTS SA lost to WA (1-2) SA lost to QLD (0-1) SA drew with NSWB (1-1) The girls then had to play New South Wales, last year’s champions, for a spot in the top four preliminary finals. The match was always going to be a challenge but was an extremely tight contest with New South Wales only managing to take the lead in the final minutes of the second quarter.

They were able to maintain their lead until SA scored a spectacular diving goal early in the last quarter to equalise. The score remained level at the final whistle, taking the game to one-on-one shootouts to determine a deserving winner. After the score was still level after the first round of shootouts, it went “golden goal” where SA’s goalie managed to save NSW’s first attempt and SA then converted, sending them into the preliminary playoffs and a guaranteed top four finish.

Unfortunately SA was unable to win their final two matches, losing to eventual champions Queensland, 2-0, and 1-0 against Western Australia in the bronze

It is safe to say this photo depicts what would be a rare occurrence in any football club in any competition in Australia. medal playoff. Shand was a standout in defence for SA as well as scoring a goal but unfortunately was unable to play in the final match due to an injury sustained in the previous game. Edmonds provided great drive and aggression as one of SA’s strikers and Lewis was solid in both defence and attack as one fo the team’s midfield players. Overall fourth was an outstanding result for such a young team, with any of the line-up still eligible to participate in the championships next year.

Australia’s world record-breaking teams pursuit track cycling squad will use the upcoming Visit Victoria-Campolina Tour of the Great South Coast as a key strength-building event in its preparations for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. The fivemember contingent of West Australian Sam Welsford, Victorians Leigh Howard and Kelland O’Brien, Adelaide’s Alex Porter and the Sydneybased Cameron Scott will give the six-day tour a massive boost of class and international prestige.

Under the coaching guidance of 2007 Melbourne to Warrnambool Classic winner Tim Decker, the four-man line-up of Welsford, Porter, Howard and O’Brien won gold and smashed the world record in the teams pursuit final at last year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. In clocking 3 minutes 49.804 seconds, the quartet thrashed arch rivals Great Britain and became the first pursuit team to crash through the 3mins 50secs barrier for the 4000-metre distance. The team’s spectacular status as the kings of global track cycling was further enhanced at the world championships in Poland in February when they won the teams pursuit title and lowered their world record mark to a stunning 3mins 48.012secs. The brutallypowerful Welsford, who answers to a variety of nicknames including “The Animal,” climbed a step higher by winning the scratch race gold medal – only an hour after his teams pursuit conquest. Scott, who rode in the qualifying rounds in Brisbane and Poland but was an onlooker for both finals, may get his chance for personal glory in the six-day Great South Tour which starts with a traditional criterium at Mount Gambier’s Vansittart Park on Tuesday, August 27, and ends with another crit on Portland’s expansive waterfront on Sunday, September 1. A quiet achiever, Scott is an accomplished road rider, winning the three-race Criterium Cup at the Tasmanian Christmas Carnivals for the past two years. The squad will race under the Australian Cycling Academy banner. Decker and his riders are currently overseas but will return to Australia early in August. The South Australian-based coach has singled out the 541-kilometre eight-stage Great South Coast tour because of its variety of terrain and the addition of a ground-breaking teams time trial at Naracoorte on Thursday, August 29. The 16.4km time trial, from Naracoorte Showgrounds to the world heritage-listed Naracoorte Caves, will see teams take off at two-minute intervals in a contest billed as “the race of truth.”

Decker is hopeful that his squad can annexe a clear-cut victory on the vineyard-dotted course. “The Great South Coast tour is a tremendous race because there’s something in the course for everybody,” Decker said. “It’s an important build-up event for us, with the Tokyo Olympics looming. “You’ve got to be a good bike rider to win this race – there’s nowhere to hide, whether it be in the hills around Casterton, the open windswept flats at Port MacDonnell or the three crits.” Founded in 2012, the eighth Tour of the Great South Coast is backed by the Victorian State Government and four municipalities – the City of Mount Gambier, District Council of Grant and Naracoorte Lucindale Council in South Australia, and Victoria’s Glenelg Shire Council. Entries close with Cycling Victoria on August 17.
