Director Tina Clark has been in charge for the past seven years, starting as a strictly premium brand outlet to give the Commercial Street East menswear outlet a point of difference.

Fast forward seven years and there is a desperate need in the Mount Gambier retail landscape for a new niche – quality, affordable clothing – and Tina has spent the past few months researching the industry to find the right fit for Mount Gambier customers and the County Grey brand.

“We have spent the past few months sourcing brands that can give our customers the same great look but at a cheaper price point,” Tina said. “We know the region is hurting from the loss of Target and Ed Harrys and we really want to provide for the local community with options for all price points.”

That has seen County Grey launch Connor and Tarocash in store in recent weeks, while also broadening their range of New England, Industrie and The Academy Brand as a genuine shift to affordable lifestyle clothing.

Snaring Connor clothing has been a huge coup for Tina and the County Grey team. “They do not usually stock their clothes outside their own concept stores,” Tina said. “But I worked really closely with them and was able to talk them into coming to County Grey and with Connor, the cut is good, the quality is good and the price is there to cater for a new customer.”

County Grey’s catchcry has been to be a menswear store for every man and that has never been truer than since the addition of the new brands in store. Of

FUNDRAISER FOR YOUNG FAMILY In March this year, Nathan Foote was out riding in the sand dunes of Canunda National Park. An experienced rider, he had just started getting back into the past time after a hiatus, but March 30 turned out to be a memorable day for all the wrong reasons after an accident that has left the new father in a wheelchair. “When it happened I thought I had just winded myself and said I will get up in a minute,” Nathan said. Then he realised he just couldn’t get up and so began an agonising six hour wait for help to arrive, with Nathan eventually ending up in Adelaide, where he has spent the past six months before returning to Mount Gambier for a five week stint in the local hospital and now, thankfully, he is now back in his home with partner Shelly Manser and son Riley. “It is just so good to not be in hospital and to be back home in Mount Gambier,” Nathan said. “It wasn’t fun living in hospital and rehabilitation places and while lots of people came to visit, which was great, I am just glad to be back home and trying to get back to as normal as possible.” This weekend, a major fundraiser is being held for the young family as they look to fit out their home, continue Nathan’s rehabilitation and help cover the extensive medical bills already accrued. This Sunday, from 12.30-4.30pm, there will be an event at the East Gambier Football Club with three live bands, motocross, a barbeque and a range of fundraising activities including an auction and raffles. “So many local businesses and individuals

have been so generous to help out with this event,” said one of the event organisers Josh Burdon, who is also a close mate of Nathan’s and was with him on the day of the accident. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the gate or prior to the event at Mount Plumbing Service or Green Triangle Livestock and Real Estate. It is the first fundraiser the family has held since the life changing accident, and Nathan does have a Go Fund Me page, where you can also donate.

NARACOORTE RUN ON THE HORIZON Time to shake off the lazy bones, put on your sneakers and celebrate the fossils at the inaugural Naracoorte World Heritage Run, Sunday 24 November 2019 at the Naracoorte Caves. Choose from the 22km Mega Fauna Run starting at 7.30am (briefing 6.45am), 14km Stoney Point Run starting at 8am (briefing 7.45am) or 5km Dippy Run starting at 8.30am (briefing 8.45am). The one kilometre “Fossil Dash” at 10am starts at the Fossil Hunters Playground and takes you around the Roof Top Loop Walk.

This route is wheelchair and pram friendly and is suitable for all ages and abilities – so there’s no excuse for young runners not to be accompanied by an adult. Gold coin donation at the start to support research into the critically endangered Southern Bent-wing Bat. You can hike any of the distances but, so that no one misses the big fun of the Naracoorte World Heritage Festival a cut-off time of 12noon applies to all runs. Trail Run check in commences from 6am.

A free bus will run between the Naracoorte Town Square and the Naracoorte Caves. The Festival and Run has received $20,000 funding from the Australian Government through the Building Better Regions Fund. The Naracoorte Lucindale Council and the Naracoorte Lucindale Business and Tourism Association are also contributing $15,400 and $5000 respectively. The University of Adelaide, and the Naracoorte Caves are supporting the Festival and Run with in kind contributions.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - NEVER AGAIN‌ By ROBBIE TANSEL I’ve just returned from accompanying my son Shaquille on his school camp. I did not kill any of the children, which I’m pretty proud of.

I’ve come to the conclusion that a school camp is the equivalent of your kid having his or her friends over for a sleepover if they were all on ice.

Just for context, it’s worth you knowing that they’re all about nine or ten years old. I consider that old enough to know better.

I watched on the bus on the four hour trip to the camp as the students ate enough sugary goodness to‌well enough sugar to make them absolute pains in the backside for the next two days. Thanks parents. Unsupervised, children have no ability to comprehend there is a point where you’ve had enough lollies. If eating vegetables, they are capable of deciding at some point, “I’ve had enough peas and carrots.â€?

They normally make this decision shortly before putting any in their mouth, in my experience.

Not the case with lollies though. “That’s your third bag of lollies, Jake.

I think you might want to pace yourself a bit better. And could you please climb off the roof and back into the bus with the rest of us?�

As if that’s not bad enough, kids are really immature too. They talk in high pitch voices; they don’t understand what is an appropriate volume. They are completely obsessed with themselves.

They’re obnoxious. They’re not very smart. They can’t keep their hands to themselves. Their behaviour is completely inappropriate. They’ve got too many tattoos. Sorry. My mistake.

That was something I wrote down for an article about that ridiculous reality show Love Island Australia. Most of it still applies mind you.

They’re not big fans of listening which is part of the reason they’re dumb. If they listened to our expert guides, not only would they get smarter, but they’d also improve their repertoire of Dad jokes. Being a tour guide must be such a mind-numbing job.

After concluding our activities for the day I then had to share a room with all of the boys on the camp. And their smells. And noises. And spraying ridiculous amounts of deodorant everywhere. And inability to find their socks because they don’t keep their stuff in a neat pile. And spraying bug repellent all over the place, despite the fact the only pest is the one holding the spray bottle, filling my lungs up with toxic chemicals.

As soon as you have more than two kids in a room, sleeping is no longer going to be a priority. They want to talk and stay up all night. To be honest

this wouldn’t be a bad idea with all the sugar they’ve consumed, as long as they’ll let me sleep.

Eventually they do sleep. It takes me forever to go to sleep myself due to listening to them roll over, make weird noises, talk in their sleep and go to the toilet repeatedly.

Five minutes after I finally go to sleep, I hear an alarm blaring. It can’t be the morning I conclude, and sure enough I’m correct. It turns out that one of the students brought his tablet to the camp. For some reason he has set an alarm for 1am. If we surveyed everyone

in the world to find out how often they have set an alarm for 1am, I’m confident that it would be less than 0.1 percent of the time. I can’t prove that right, but you can’t prove me wrong. There is no reason they accidentally might have activated a previous alarm they’d set.

Their lack of response makes it feel they didn’t deliberately set it as a plan to sneak out. It makes no sense.

Worse, the device is password protected and I can’t find anything to stop it making the noise other than to press snooze. Five minutes later it is obviously making the noise again.

The good news is that no-one else, including any of the kids has been woken. The bad news is that no-one else has been woken, and I can’t stop it making this noise. I could wake the child up to deal with it, but it’s too late because I’ve already killed him in his sleep. Eventually I decide that it will just be best if I take it as far as I can away from the dormitory and see if he can find it in the morning. Shouldn’t be too hard unfortunately, as no doubt it will be making the same shrill noise.

When I queried him about it in the morning he said, “It’s the most obvious code in the world.

One two three four.� “I tried that,� I responded testily. “I can’t remember what it is then,� he said, as if this whole conversation, and scenario in general, made perfect sense.

Needless to say, I won’t be

going on a school camp again in a hurry.

Camp Quality’s biggest annual fundraiser is the road trip esCarpade and last week, the million dollar fundraiser passed through Mount Gambier as part of the more than 2700km 2019 event. The week long journey from Wangaratta to Echuca ran from October 19 to 26 visited Mount Gambier on October 23 and 24.

Around 150 entrants take part in the esCarpade each year and the 2019 field were looking to raise $1.4million dollars.

Camp Quality provides services and programs for children up to 13 years of age that are diagnosed with cancer or have a close family member diagnosed and focusses on allowing those kids to still be kids. Last year alone, more than 8000 kids tapped into what Camp Quality has to offer. As part of the esCarpade convoy’s visit to Mount

Gambier , around 15 of the participating vehicles headed to McDonald Park School so the kids could check out the vehicles and find out about the work of Camp Quality. Along with some giveaways, including pens and frisbees, the school was also treated to the Camp Quality Primary School Education Program puppet show, which teaches kids they can’t catch cancer. It is an interactive show aimed a creating an inclusive community for kids returning to school after cancer treatment or facing the diagnosis of a loved one.

CHRISTMAS APPEAL LAUNCHED Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin OAM has officially launched the 2019 Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.

Mayor Martin acknowledged the staff and volunteers from local agencies Uniting Care, St Vincent de Paul, ac care, The Salvation Army and Lifeline South East at the launch, thanking them for the role they play in distributing funds raised through the community appeal.

“Not only do these agencies play an important role for our city throughout the year, they go over and above during the festive season to ensure that everyone in our community can experience the joy of Christmas,” Mayor Martin said.

In 2018 the Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal raised almost $30,000, which the Mayor attributed to the goodwill and generosity of community spirit in Mount Gambier.

The appeal supported 739 children and young people, 670 adults and 454 families last year and represents what is great about our community – our capacity to unite together to assist those in need.

Manager of Homelessness Services at ac care, Trish Spark said the appeal makes a real difference to those in need at Christmas.

“It’s a time of year when kids are getting all excited but it’s not the best

time of year for everybody because there are still families out there doing it tough; just because it’s Christmas it doesn’t change your situation,” Ms Spark said. “Children hear that Santa is checking his list for those who have been naughty or nice and think ‘I’ve been good, I’m going to get presents’, but then Christmas comes and these kids get up in the morning and don’t have anything and they think things like ‘I must have been really bad, why didn’t I get anything?’ The effect that these things have on children is really big and Christmas is so important but without this appeal we wouldn’t be able to do what we do and we try to make sure that every child has something so that nobody is waking up on Christmas Day with nothing and so the families can have Christmas dinner.”

Representatives from Mount Gambier Men’s Shed have again donated more than 120 handmade wooden toys that have been made throughout the year to be distributed to families in need this Christmas. “Part of our mantra at the Men’s Shed is to be seen working in the community, and I can’t think of a better way to be working in the community,” Mount Gambier Men’s Shed president Peter Heness said.

Mount Gambier Library Manager Georgina Davison was also in attendance to share a new initiative

for this year’s appeal - the book drive. “We’re partnering with Collins Booksellers who have offered to provide discount for anyone wishing to purchase a book for donation to the appeal,” Ms Davison said. The books will then be wrapped up and displayed under a tree at the Library before being donated to the appeal for local agencies to distribute.

Local businesses, community groups, families and individuals are encouraged to support local people in need this festive season by donating to the 2019 appeal or coordinating activities to assist with the cause.

NARACOORTE HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER IS TOP OF THE CLASS Naracoorte High School maths teacher Diana Agnew (pictured) has recently been honoured as South Australia’s best in teacher excellence at the recent 2019 Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) Choose Maths Awards. The awards recognised seven of Australia’s leading maths teachers earlier this month at a ceremony deemed, the Oscars of Australian Maths education. Running since 2016, the Oscars of Mathematics have invested more than $267,000 in classrooms across Australia in recognition of teacher excellence. Judged by a panel of maths education experts, the teacher awards acknowledge educators who demonstrate excellence in leadership, creativity and innovation and the engagement and mentoring of colleagues and students to strengthen outcomes for girls in mathematics. Mrs. Agnew was selected based on her demonstrated capacity to engage and inspire students using innovative practice, or for providing ongoing mentoring support.

“The nomination for this award from a staff member at this school was really lovely and it was a very humbling experience to read the comments made by the staff and students that I have worked with,” Diana said. “I believe these awards are a wonderful way of recognising how far we have come with our mathematical programs at Naracoorte High School.”

ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE INVESTING IN HISTORIC SOUTH EAST FACILITY The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) last week announced a landmark project to establish the RFDS Mount Gambier Patient Transfer Facility, the first of its

kind in regional South Australia. The RFDS Mount Gambier Patient Transfer Facility will enhance patient care and operational response times for critical patients, as

well as upgrading comfort levels for patients, crews and service-delivery partners.

RFDS crews land twice a day somewhere in the South East – at least once a day at Mount Gambier Airport – to airlift residents and tourists to one of Adelaide’s major hospitals for life-saving care or specialist medical treatment.

Mount Gambier patients – like those at every other rural, regional and outback aerodrome in the state – are transferred into a RFDS aircraft standing on the tarmac at all times of day and night, in the elements and in all extremes of seasonal weather.

To improve patient comfort and care, the RFDS has purchased an existing aircraft hangar on site, and will refurbish half the structure into an indoor patient care facility and retain the other half as a traditional hangar for aircraft parking and patient loading under cover, when required. The converted hangar will enable RFDS and SAAS MedSTAR crews to stabilise a deteriorating patient more effectively prior to flight or, more simply, enable the transfer of patients into the aircraft under cover and protected from extremes of weather.

“The RFDS Mount Gambier Patient Transfer Facility will set a new standard of care provided by the RFDS and its service-delivery partners at regional aerodromes across South Australia,” Tony Vaughan ASM, Chief Executive of RFDS Central Operations said. “The RFDS is focused on driving continual improvement in our care for every patient and at every touchpoint, and

we’re delighted that the community has come on board and supported this landmark project every step of the way. We directed the $70,000 donation received back in May from our Mount Gambier RFDS Support Group towards the purchase of the hangar, and the District Council of Grant has been fantastic in waiving costs and offering inkind services now and into the future.”

District Council of Grant Acting CEO Jane Fetherstonhaugh said the council was proud to support the project by providing civil services to the building and waiving rent/lease charges on a longterm basis. “Council identify this as a landmark project, setting a new standard for patient transport and have entered into a peppercorn lease arrangement for a period of twenty one years with the RFDS,” Mrs Fetherstonhaugh said. “This means that council will waive the cost of utilities, lease fees, rates and other costs associated with the lease of the land to support the RFDS in providing this critical service,” she said.

The RFDS Mount Gambier Patient Transfer Facility will feature: • stabilisation bay for retrieval teams to manage deteriorating patients prior to flight • climate controlled environment for the transfer of patients between SA Ambulance (SAAS) and RFDS crews • weather protection for the loading of patients into aircraft during extreme weather conditions • spacious floorplan to accommodate multiple patients and crews at the same time

• modern amenities such as a private patient bathroom and crew rest areas • aircraft hangar to provide an undercover area with optimum artificial lighting for engineers to perform unscheduled aircraft maintenance • secure parking to protect ambulances stationed at the facility.

The SA Ambulance Service (SAAS) will also support the new facility and patients by locating an ambulance at the RFDS Mount Gambier Patient Transfer Facility for use by RFDS and SAAS MedSTAR retrieval teams. This additional capacity will ensure patients are transferred in a timely manner with minimal impact on ambulance resources in Mount Gambier.

Overall works for the RFDS Mount Gambier Patient Transfer Facility project are budgeted at $500,000, and include the purchase of the existing hangar, concrete flooring and all related structural and refurbishment costs.

Ahrens Group Pty Ltd has been awarded the head contractor of the design, construction and refurbishment project, and local trades will be sourced wherever possible to complete the works.

Last week’s announcement doubles as the lauch of a local fundraising campaign that will see all donations received from the Lower South East region between now and Christmas directed to completing the RFDS Mount Gambier Patient Transfer Facility project.

“In addition to monetary support, we are also seeking support from local trades such as electrical, carpentry, painting and air conditioning, which can provide in-kind professional services and make significant cost savings to the project,” Mr Vaughan said.

The refurbishment work is scheduled to commence within weeks, and it is anticipated the facility will be fully operational by the New Year.

It’s a sad day when a gang of three “I still play with dolls” Miss Seven Year Olds can bring out your insecurities – especially when you’re a worldly 32!

This morning I was the victim of a vicious unprovoked verbal attack. Here I was minding my own business, casually strolling down the school pathway.

Mr Five Year Old had left me for dead, and sprinted off to the classroom.

I walked past “thea gang” and heard one of them pronounce a loud “Oh My God” (in a sort of slow American style drawl).

It took a couple of seconds to sink in and a few more seconds to wonder if they were talking about me. I stopped and turned around and sure enough, here they were pointing and leaning out to get a better look.

In retaliation, I gave them my best grown up scowl and then scuttled away to the classroom all the while wondering whether it was my boots, skirt or hair that had caused the cutting remark.

The whole event has left me quite shaken - I think I may be mentally scarred.

A classic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon that has been produced by one of South Australia’s oldest wineries since the 1980s was the big winner at last week’s 2019 Limestone Coast Wine Show. The 2016 St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon won the Bill Redman Trophy for Best Wine of Show at tonight’s trophy presentation feast held at Penola’s Rymill Hall, after earlier winning the HR (Ron) Haselgrove Trophy for Best Cabernet Sauvignon and the David Wynn Trophy for Best Red Wine of Show. The result saw St Hugo viticulturist Tim McCarthy (pictured right in the vineyards and (inset) accepting his award) awarded the Arthur Hoffmann Trophy for Viticulturist of the Year for the second year in a row, after last year taking top honours with the 2016 George Wyndham ‘I Am George’ Shiraz Cabernet.

Chief of Judges Samantha Connew,described the 2016 St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon as “a beautiful example of a wine from a terrific variety which highlights exactly what Cabernet from this region should be about.”

The St Hugo trophy haul continued when the 2015 St Hugo Vetus Purum Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon claimed the Trophy for Best Individual Vineyard Wine for the second year in a row, taking the tally to five for the evening.

This year’s awards saw the official unveiling of the new Pam Dunsford Trophy for Best Chardonnay. The 2018 Brand’s Laira Blockers Chardonnay

was named the inaugural winner of this trophy honouring the esteemed winemaker’s contribution to the Limestone Coast’s winemaking heritage.

Meanwhile, it was a triple trophy treat for seasoned performer Leconfield Wines across a range of grape varieties.

The 2019 Leconfield Coonawarra ‘La Sevillana’ Rosé won the Trophy for Best Rosé, the 2018 Leconfield Coonawarra Merlot claimed the Peter Wehl Trophy for Best Merlot, while the 2018 Leconfield Coonawarra ‘Old Vine’ Riesling won the International Judges’ Award. “This wine was definitely one of the wines that stood out this week,” said guest International Judge Michelle Bouffard, from Montreal, Canada. “Bone dry with great tension and energy. Love the structure. Simply thirst quenching.”

Riesling from Coonawarra really shone at this year’s event claiming a total of five trophies. “It just demonstrates that Coonawarra has got multiple strings to its bow and the story is not just about red varietals; riesling from this region also really shines,” said Samantha Connew.

The 2019 The Ridge Terra Rossa Coonawarra Riesling won the Colin Kidd Trophy for Best White Wine of Show and the Karl Seppelt Trophy for Best White (excluding Chardonnay).

The 2014 Patrick of Coonawarra Aged Riesling won the Ewen Fergusson McBain Trophy for Best Museum Wine, and the Blok Coonawarra Riesling 2018, 2010, 2006 won the White Wine of Provenance Trophy.

A total of 43 Gold medals were awarded at the 19th annual show, matching last year’s tally.

BYADUK SPRING SHOW THIS WEEKEND The 113th Byaduk and Community Spring Show will be held this Saturday.

New initiatives introduced last year were a great success and will return with the fabulous display of Community Scarecrows, for prizemoney of $100, awarded to the winner’s nominated educational facility, along with the Chocolate Cake Competition and the fabulous iGarden display.

There is also a non-competitive section with the iGarden with images of local gardens from across all seasons being supplied to incorporate into a digital display to be run on the day.

Time honoured sections including cut flowers, roses, floral art and homecrafts, along with photography are all still part

of the program.

The photos are always a highlight with favourite animal, best selfie, funniest photo bomb and funniest farm mishap some of the popular categories.

Jo Levy, from For The Love Of Flora, s creating a floral display in the hall and if the archway entrance she provided for the show two years ago is any indication, this is bound to be a show stopper.

The Hamilton and District Veteran Vintage and Classic Drivers Club are being featured at the show with an interesting variety of vehicles anticipated with examples representing various decades from the 1920s onward.

Dickins’ Delights, Rosemary Thomson, Tupperware, Macarthur Men’s Shed, Melissa Beaty Metal Art, Sara Morgan display of sale rams, Gena Kramberger bags, Nic and Dave’s jams and relishes, Shannon Glen Berries, JG Designs and Creations, plants, books, coffee and barbeque are just some of the stalls that will be on site.

The local cricket will be in action on the oval beside the hall and the Byaduk Store will also be open with its fabulous range of gifts and treasures.

Registrations for entries closes at 2pm on Friday, November 1, and all entries are to be placed in the hall between 6pm and 8pm this Friday, ready for

judging at 9am Saturday morning.

Doors will open at 11am to the general public, with stalls selling from that time, along with the official opening at 12noon.

Ken Gazzard celebrated his 90th birthday on the 21st of October with a celebration held Saturday, the 19th, that truly reflected everything about the respected business leader with the celebration highlighting his devotion to his family, business and staff. Ken celebrated the 90 year milestone with an open house afternoon at Carlin & Gazzard’s new, state-of-the-art service centre on Crouch Street South, with wife Lorraine, his six children, Chris, Peter, Mike, Cathy, Paul and Matthew, their partners, Lyn, Carolyn, Marcia, Marijan, Jenni and Marika and his 14 grandchildren. It was also important to Ken to share the celebration with his staff, past and present, over the dealership’s 60-plus years in business, many of whom are like family, having worked for the car industry giant for many years, and there were also many members of the Carlin family, from Casterton and Melbourne. Ken was overwhelmed with the many guests that travelled including Mercedes Benz Australia Pacific CEO Horst von Sanden and his wife Angelika and retired Mercedes Benz Southern Region Managing Director Peter Marshall and his wife Judy. Peter was in charge when c&G was appointed a Mercedes dealer in 1997. Whyalla born international racing car driver Vernon Schuppen and his wife Jennifer were also in attendance, as was Australian touring car legend Norman Beechey and his wife Margaret. A highlight of the celebration was the grandchildren sharing their treasured memories of Papa to the crowd before entertainment from jazz icon James Morrison, as well as several performances from Louise Adams, Denis McNamee and Dale Cleves, who formed a trio for the special event. “I was overwhelmed by how many people showed up to help me celebrate and it was just the best party I have ever been to,” Ken said. “It was so special to share the day with my family and so many close friends.”

NEW FLOAT FOR ANNIVERSARY PARADE The 2019 NF McDonnell and Sons Mount Gambier Christmas Parade is just around the corner and preparations are nearing completion following the unveiling of a new float last week.

Named after the classic poem ‘Twas the night before Christmas, the float provides a new attraction to commemorate the 60th event, which is on Saturday, November 16. City of Mount Gambier purchased the mouse character from the Adelaide Christmas Pageant and council staff and volunteers have been busy building a base and a trailer to form the completed float with new details also added to the character. “Many weeks have been spent revitalising the mouse by adding colour and innovative touches to the float,” City of Mount Gambier community events team leader Denise Richardson said.

“Our small team of dedicated volunteers have done a wonderful job bringing the float back to life and have made it unique to the Mount Gambier parade.” Various local businesses have contributed materials to the float with Green Triangle Electronics taking up the opportunity to become the float’s inaugural sponsor. With entries for the parade closing soon on October 31, Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin is encouraging the community to get involved in the milestone event. “The parade heralds the arrival of the festive season in our city and I’d love to see a fantastic variety of entrants to mark the occasion,” Mayor Martin said.

JAZZ OFFER MUSIC TO JOE’S EARS Aussie basketball star Joe Ingles has signed a one year contract extension worth AUS$20.4 million with the Utah Jazz that will take him through to the end of the 2021-22 season. Ingles already had AUS$33 million remaining on his remaining two contracted years at the Jazz — meaning he will earn almost $54 million in the final three years of his career. A turn around in results this week with games being much closer. In the early game Central were victors over a better performing Tigers outfit. Central were on the board first scoring two runs in the top of the second dig. Dylan Chuck singled as did Brock Keding.

They both scored on Brad Lynagh’s hit into left field.

They added two more in the top of the third when an Alex Ridding safe hit saw him on board and Kyall McClean found himself at first, and advancing the runner with a subsequent wild throw, on a fielder’s choice. Both scored on Nathan Meinck’s single to right field. Tigers started their fight back in the even inning.

Brayden Morton hit safely to centre field and scored on Blake Lentsment’s double to right field. They added two more in the bottom of the fourth, Jesse Foster singled and scored on Garth Ransom’s double who subsequently crossed home on Dyllan Lane’s two bagger to right-field. That was all they scored as the Central defence managed to close out the rally. In the top of the eighth Chuck hit safely and touched home on Koby Chant’s infield hit for an out. Central fielders closed out the game to take the win five runs to three.

Central had eight safe hits, one base on ball, one hit batter, five strike outs, made two errors and left six runners on base. Tigers recorded seven safen hits, three base on ball, six strike outs, made two errors and left six runners on base. South Indians prevailed over Federal by a solitary run in the late game on Saturday.

Alex Pearson picked a walk and scored on McMillan’s hit to right field and he subsequently crossed the home plate on Alex Pearson’s safe-hit to right-field, which gave Federal a four run to two lead. Once again South hit back. In the bottom of the seventh with two out, Ryan Placucci singled to left field, Ben Nash hit into an error at shortstop which saw Placucci cross home. Nash scored on Bruce Morale’s double to left field tying the game once more. The Indians scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Placucci found himself on board when his flyball was grassed by the Federal shortstop and touched the plate on a passed ball by the Demons catcher giving the Indians a five to four victory. South had nine safe hits, three base on ball, nine strikeouts, made four errors and left eight runners on base. SOUTH EAST VETERANS GOLF The travelling circus of older golfers arrived at Naracoorte to contest the Monfries and Porter Trophy, with Phil Bliss of Attamurra winning First Division on 36 points, from Tony Bishop, of Bordertown, and Steve Von Duve, of Blue Lake, who both had 35. Second Division was won

by Mel Proud, a local who plays daily, with 38, from Swampy Wright, a former local, now of Kingston, and Russ Lingham, of Blue Lake, both with 37. Gavin Sparrow also had 37, but won nothing in the countback. The ball rundown went to 30 or better and the Ross Orchard went to Barry Turnbull and Peter Vile. NTPs were Ian Regnier, Trev Hutchesson, John Millhouse and Ian Bruce. The next outing was at Royal Penola on October 28 with results to follownext week, followed by Attamurra on November 11. Now the winter is receding organisers expect the playing numbers to rise. Start time at all venues is now 9.30am, as we are successfully using the four tee hitoffs to get the travellers home earlier. SPORT LOCALS SHINE ON NATIONAL STAGE

The 2019 Sporting Clays Australia Nationals were recently held at Cooma Sporting Clays in the alpine region of New South Wales. At 1250 metres above sea level, the grounds are prone to severe weather and Mother Nature duly obliged on the day before the event commenced with a dusting of snow and the first two days of the 200 target event being affected by gale force winds making for some difficult shooting conditions, however with snow visible on the peaks of the Perisher Valley ski fields it did make for picturesque venue. A good contingent of South Australians made the long trip to Cooma, including the South Australian Field & Game team of seven, who won a silver medal, finishing runner up to the powerful Victorian team and two targets ahead of Queensland. Team members included Jeremy Kent, from Millicent, Chris Wright, from Kongorong and Jo & Janette Densley, from Kingston. Sevety-five targets per day were shot over eight grounds by the 320 sporting clay shooters on the Friday and Saturday and 50 targets on the Sunday, in vastly improved weather conditions, to conclude the event. Shoot offs were required to determine the overall champion, with Victorian young gun Cameron Kivinen overcoming the experienced Anthony Panetta in sudden death, after being tied on 186/200 +24/25, to take his maiden national championship. Millicent`s Jeremy Kent had to shoot off with Chris Brown after being tied on 185/200 and Kent proved ruthless in the shoot off scoring 25/25 and with Brown dropping a target under pressure, so Kent took out third and the remaining place on the podium. Mount Gambier`s experienced campaigner Malcolm Whitehead became the national veteran champion shooting 166/200 to finish one target ahead of Victoria’s Eddy Magee. Other notable performances came from Lake Bonney`s Allan Cowin, who finished third in B Grade shooting 155/200, Kingston`s Janette Densley, who was fourth in Ladies and Furner`s Tash Bellinger, who finished fifth in Ladies. Kongorong`s Declan Wright finished fourth in sub juniors.

SOUTH EAST SENIORS TENNIS Twelve South East Tennis Seniors enjoyed tennis at Penola earlier this month in good conditions. Trish Douglas won the ladies event from Helen Rathjen. The men’s event was won by Bob Brown, from Allan Schultz and Peter Barry, who tied for second. The next seniors event will be held at Murray Bridge on November 10 at 10am, while the next local event will be held at Naracoorte on November 17 at 11am

SEASON DECIDER FOR WOMEN’S 8 BALL With another season almost done, the remaining SE Women’s 8 Ball League teams now focus on this week’s grand final. In Division 1, German Club Legends will face German Club Shooters next Tuesday night in the all German Club affair for the second year running. The much improved Legends who were last year’s Division 2 premiers finished second on the ladder and progressed straight into the final after defeating minor round premier’s Shooters two weeks ago in the 2nd semi final where they snuck home 8-6 in a tight one. Shooters had to do it the hard way but were up to the task in the preliminary-final when they fronted up to last year’s Division 1 premiers German Club Warriors, who have struggled somewhat throughout this season. They eventually got there by winning eight frames to six, which was a nice birthday present for stand-in captain Jo Walsh, in the absence of Karla Bowd, who was away representing the SA Women’s State 8 Ball team at the national championships, in Albury, and will return to play her fourth grand final in as many years. It is the first time in approximately 13 years or so that Warriors, led by Carol Lockwood, have not contested the Division1 grand final. With both grand finalists containing former and current SA State team members and SE Women’s carnival team representatives the match should be a good one to watch with Chris Schembri’s Legends keen to elevate themselves from Division 2 premiers last year to Division 1 this year, and Shooters looking to go one better after going down to Warriors in the final in 2018. The A Team won straight through to the Division 2 final when they defeated minor round premier’s JT Strikers in the 2nd semi final by the narrowest of margins (8-7).

Strikers managed to bounce back winning eight frames to four over Park Nomads in the preliminary final to set up a rematch against The A Team which should be a good tussle if the semi-final score is anything to go by.
