Honouring family Young hip hop dancers debut production Two young hip hop dancers will honour their father and grandfather in a new creative work premiering at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre next month. As part of the theatre’s Local and Live program, Espoir Alpha and Anton Gabutina (pictured left) will take centrestage on May 15 to perform their first major work, Dancing with Lolo and Papa.
For several months the duo has worked with professional choreographer Anya McKee to develop a contemporary dance referencing Anton’s lolo (grandfather) and Espoir’s papa (father). The production includes snippets of family interviews and a short film exploring the relationship between a father and daughter through a
dancing lens. For Espoir, who migrated to Australia six years ago from the Congo, dancing has been an influential part of his life since he was a child, while Anton has vivid memories of dancing with his brother and cousins in the living room of his Quezon City home. See inside for full story
