Dagny Strand secures art prize Dagny Strand has been a vibrant member of the Limestone Coast art scene for decades and last Thursday night, as the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival launched with the traditional announcement of the winner of the John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize, it was the popular and talented artist that took home the top prize. Dagny (pictured above) has worked, and continues to work, across a variety of artistic mediums and this time it was her painting that secured the $12,000 prize, that is sponsored by The Balnaves Foundation. Stella Scanlon (pictured right) picked up two gongs for her entry
– snaring the Packer’s Prize as well as the $1000 Limestone Coast Local prize, that is sponsored by Penola art doyen Lois Hodge. The John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize is open to all emerging and established artists throughout Australia and entries must be inspired by the works of this early Penola poet. This year marks 30 years since the inception of the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of John Shaw Neilson’s birth. Lifestyle1 will provide full coverage of the 2022 anniversary festival in next week’s issue, including the Ottelia restaurant
and cellar door hosted Literary Brunch with producer Nick Batzias with director and screenwriter Justin Kurzel, the CoOpera premiere performance of the one act comic opera ‘Gianni Schicchi’ by Giacomo Puccini and all the family fun and off Broadway events on the jam packed 30th anniversary program. With more than 50 events including exhibitions, comedy, music, competitions, workshops, food and wine offerings, the 2022 Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival was an event to remmber.
