Paying it forward this Christmas

Mount Gambier High School & local charity Four Reasons Why join forces

It was a simple campaign and it has been a huge success as Mount Gambier High School and local charity Four Reasons Why combined forces to provide some Christmas joy.

It is the second successive year the two have combined as part of the charity’s Christmas Kindness Program – the program not only providing assistance for people in need but also doubling as a key part of the curriculum for Community Studies students.

Four Reasons Why founder Trudi Shelton said the idea behind this campaign was simple, to make sure every student at Kalangadoo Primary School receives a Christmas gift from Santa.

“We reached out to Kalangadoo Primary School and offered their families a secret gift from Santa,” Ms Shelton said. “Then the Flexible Learning Options team at Mount Gambier High School, led by Year 10 Student, Evie Biddle got busy organising the campaign. Evie designed the promotional posters and wrapped and coordinated all the presents that came in.”

Twenty requests for presents were received and the present list was filled within 24 hours by the Four Reasons Why community of supporters.

“I’d just like to thank everyone who was a part of this very special Christmas project, from the FLO team, to Evie, the amazing and generous donors and to the Kalangadoo families who let us help them receive some Christmas cheer,” said Ms Shelton.

Four Reasons Why has a long history of helping Mount Gambier High Schools families including assisting students with the costs of sports and school camps to providing Christmas hampers and food vouchers during times of need.

And that is why Mount Gambier High School’s Flexible Learning Options (FLO) class, under the tutelage of FLO coordinator Jamie Ryan, wanted to give back to the locally focussed charity and help spread some Christmas cheer.

“I was really touched and inspired when Jamie reached out to me to share that the FLO students were so encouraged by Four Reasons Why kindness to them that they were inspired to again give back to our local community,” Ms Shelton said. “At the very heart and core of Four Reasons Why has always been to help our community and keep finding innovative and creative ways to do that.

“Teaming up with Mount Gambier High School students, who know what it is to sometimes need additional assistance, Four Reasons Why was able to provide them with a platform to experience what it is to give back to local families with this heartfelt opportunity.

“The Christmas Kindness campaign was one of Four Reasons Why’s very first initiatives and to incorporate learning for local students in the school curriculum within the Community Services subject for a semester is just fabulous, and more than we could wish for as an organisation.”

Ms Ryan agreed regarding the value of the partnership for her students.

“A focus of flexible learning at Mount Gambier High School is to create authentic learning experiences for our students,” she said. “Our teachers work with students to tailor learning around their interests, passions and strengths.

“Evie has been able to achieve something really special for young people in our local community, as well as attain SACE credits to go toward her year 11 studies.

“We know that strong

connections to community can lead to increased wellbeing outcomes for students.

“The Flexible Learning team at MGHS are grateful to Trudi, the FRW team and Kalangadoo Primary for allowing us to share in joy and learning this Christmas.”

Being able to lend a helping hand to her local community and adding value to her education made the project a win-win for FLO student Evie Biddle, who spearheaded the campaign at the school.

“I developed my literacy skills by learning how to write a professional

email, designing a poster, a table of student information and designing a social media post,” Evie said.

“I’ve never been one for public speaking, so talking to people from outside the school was really nerve wrecking, but it did get easier as time went on.”

LENDING A HELPING HAND:

Xmas message

As the year comes to a close I’d like to take the opportunity to wish all your readers a very merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.

Christmas is a time when we celebrate the birth of Christ and his message of peace and goodwill.

And while many of us celebrate with gifts under the tree the most special gift of all is the time spent with family and friends over the holiday period.

This is the true magic of Christmas, a time to stop and reflect on those we hold dear.

Enjoy this time together and remember to reach out to those in our community who may need a little extra care this Christmas, particularly if they are older, live on their own or are going through a rough patch.

Take the time to reach out and pass on the Christmas message of peace and goodwill.

The Christmas/New Year period is also a busy time of year on our roads but if we all do our bit to pay extra attention and drive to conditions we can contribute to a safer journey for all road users.

Finally, please spare a thought for our Australian Defence Force personnel deployed overseas ensuring our nation remains safe and secure this Christmas.

Merry Christmas, have a safe and prosperous New Year.

has awarded local students with the annual Barker Shield as part of their end of year celebrations.

The Barker Shield is an annual award given to three students in each participating school across the Federal electorate of Barker. It celebrates student excellence in three categories: academic achievement; community service and spirit; and a category determined by the school.

“As Federal Member for Barker, it is a great privilege to be able to recognise those students that achieve at very high levels,” Mr Pasin said. “These students have excelled in their studies or in the school community and are undoubted future leaders. No matter what they go on to achieve or where, I want them to feel valued and recognised for the leadership shown during their time at school and as part of the wider Limestone Coast community.

“Each of these students are worthy recipients who have now been honoured through the perpetual Barker Shield, which is displayed in a prominent location at the school.

“Congratulations to all students on completing the 2022 scholastic year and whether they are continuing further study or entering the work force I wish students from all schools across Barker all the best for 2023.”

Spreading Xmas cheer

Donation looking to make a difference with Christmas

Member for Barker Tony Pasin MP has given to the Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal and is encouraging those living in Mount Gambier to remember those in the community who may need a little additional support this Christmas.

“Christmas is a really busy time of year for everyone as we attempt to get things at work tided up before taking leave and spending time with friends and family, but it’s important to take the time to remember the true spirit of Christmas and help those in our community who might be doing it tough,” Mr Pasin said.

Each year the Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal plays a critical role in ensuring that vulnerable and

isolated people are able to experience the joy of Christmas.

All donations to the appeal are distributed through the ‘Christmas Cheer Program’ delivered collaboratively through Uniting Care, ac.care, Lifeline SE, St Vincent De Paul, The Salvation Army.

“Combined with interest rate rises, cost of living increases and sky rocketing energy prices, many in the community will be really feeling the pinch,” Mr Pasin said.

“This can be hard on young families with children in particular, and that’s why I’ve made the decision to not only make a monetary donation but to also buy locally made toys from the Mount

Campaign continues to promote shopping local

Member for Barker Tony Pasin is encouraging residents of Barker to ‘Go Local First’ in the lead up to Christmas.

Mr Pasin said small businesses are the backbone of the Australian economy, accounting for a third of GDP, and employing around half the total workforce.

“Cost of living is hurting the hip pocket for everyone, small businesses included, who are feeling the pinch as interest rates and power prices continue to rise,” Mr Pasin said.

“Now more than ever Australian small businesses need local communities, particularly regional ones, to support them by choosing to shop local, either in person or online.”

Mr Pasin was supporting small businesses in Barker through the ‘Go Local First’ campaign; a national communications campaign targeted at promoting awareness of, and support for

Australia’s 3.5 million small businesses.

“Small businesses are deeply engaged with their communities, including through sporting clubs, local schools, social and community groups,” Mr Pasin said. “They support our communities and it’s up to us to support them by ensuring that as much as possible, our dollars are spent locally.

“Spending with local small businesses keeps money within our communities, helping the local economy thrive.”

Mr Pasin said he had recently spent time in Millicent on his ‘Go Local First’ campaign speaking with small businesses in the community and promoting the message to Go Local First this Christmas.

“Like households, our small businesses are struggling with the rising costs of energy and battling inflation and interest rate rises.

Small businesses struggle to absorb these costs and more than ever we need to show our support to ensure a thriving

small business community in our regions,” Mr Pasin said.

Millicent Business Community Associatio chair Fiona Telfer said Millicent had a well-connected business community who were an integral part of the community and actively working together to promote the benefits of shopping locally.

“The message to support our small businesses is so important. There are many benefits to shopping local and it’s why the MBCA have created a dedicated event for Christmas Eve to encourage people to come back to the main streets of Millicent. It’s a family friendly event all about coming together and shopping in your local community,” Ms Telfer said.

Taking the next step

Writing workshops lead to new monthly magazine

Writing workshops in Mount Gambier throughout 2022 have resulted in 15 Limestone Coast writers publishing a new magazine called The Next Step.

The first issue features a selection of works by members of the writing groups which run sessions at the Mount Gambier Library. As it will be out in December it has a Christmas-themed cover in red and green, featuring a photograph of Banksia Coccinea, the Scarlet Banksia.

Mount Gambier writer Kay Mitchell’s poem ‘Christmas Fare’ begins the new publication and Adair Dunsford, of Naracoorte, has contributed ‘A Little Voice’, a tribute to the annual Wirrega Children’s Christmas Party held in the Tatiara. Contributing writers are from Mount Gambier and surrounds, Penola and Naracoorte.

Three writing groups were formed at the library following a writer in residence program with Jude Aquilina in late February.

Ms Aquilina is a South Australian author, poet and creative writing teacher and she ran a Writing for Pleasure and Publication workshop and met local writers for one-onone mentoring sessions. A Writers’ Muster was held and local authors discussed their experiences.

The library then set up the Strong Women Writers Group led by Patricia Corner, the All-Welcome group of mixed genres writing with Dr Linda Walker and Jean McArthur giving guidance and the Writing for Children and Young Adults group run by library staff member and short fiction writer, Jacqui Davies.

The three groups have met monthly and Jessica Polson from

Penola has formed the Pathways to Publication group which is driving the magazine publication and has the business name of creatives@Limestone Coast. Kay Mitchell and Jane Byrne. both of Mount Gambier. have assisted with the magazine concept.

The Next Step features fiction and non-fiction, photography, poetry and 2D artwork. It is in A4 format and will be distributed to 11 public libraries in the Limestone Coast region – Mount Gambier, Grant, Wattle Range, Tatiara, Kingston and Robe council areas. It is free of charge.

The magazine will be monthly for 2023 and submissions are invited from Limestone Coast residents. Details for submission are included in the magazine but can be an article, essay or poem or a 2D work of art. There is scope for

Another successful Young Environmental Leaders Program

Young Environmental Leaders from across the region met recently to celebrate their learning and achievements at the annual Young Environmental Leaders Program (YELP) expo held in Robe.

With 87 students registering for this year’s educational program the Limestone Coast Landscape Board has seen a steady increase in numbers over the past few years.

The end of year expo provides students with an opportunity to gather and present the sustainability projects that they have been working on during the year, celebrating their achievements and showcasing their success.

Most of the fabulous projects that were showcased in 2022 focussed on improving biodiversity across our landscape.

Projects included the design and implementation of indigenous gardens, worm farms and measuring the health of wetlands.

Students embraced working collaboratively with their peers to ensure that the whole school was involved with the project.

St Anthony’s YELP students said “we loved YELP because it was fun

and we learnt so much.

“We learnt about the culture of First Nations people and got to participate in some fun activities out in the landscape.

“Our sustainability project focussed on soils and worms. It was really interesting learning about the way worms and soil impact our environment.”

If your school would like more information on how to become involved in the Young Environmental Leaders Program in 2023 please contact lclandscapeeducation@sa.gov.au

Respected educator set to bring his skills to the forestry industry

Developing career pathways and strengthening the timber and forest industries community profile are key tasks for the Green Triangle Forest Industries Hub’s (GTFIH) new workforce development manager Josh Praolini (pictured).

The highly-respected education leader, who will join the Hub team next year, in this newly created role, has worked in various senior teaching roles, leading innovation and entrepreneurial education.

headspace Mount Gambier will be open all day on December 28, 29 and 30, offering walk-in services for mental health support.

headspace understands that the Christmas holiday period can be a challenging time for some young people.

This year, headspace staff will be available for in-person support to young people during this time.

GTFIH chair Cam MacDonald said Josh’s knowledge and experience would be of huge benefit to the role, which will cover the entirety of the Green Triangle “Josh will be a wonderful asset to the GTFIH team, strengthening relationships with our educational partners to engage our future workforce,” he said. “This new role will see him connect community and industry to the school system supporting the Hub in achieving its workforce development strategy.”

In recent years Josh has headed the Entrepreneurial Specialist School at Mount Gambier High School, driving and implementing changes to reflect the challenges students face as they enter the 21st century workforce.

Josh has worked closely with forestry, supporting 130 students in an immersive design thinking challenge, based around forestry in partnership with the Hub earlier this year.

He will be the third generation of Praolini forestry employees in the region, as his Nonno (grandfather) was a contract logger when he migrated to Australia in the 1950s. His father has also held positions in the sawmilling sector locally.

City of Mount Gambier makes history with Rail Trail project

Mount Gambier’s Rail Trail has received a major security upgrade with the installation of 160 solar lights along its 8.6km length.

The project is of national significance, as it will be Australia’s largest solar lighting project, with even more lights installed than those around the Blue Lake.

The rail trail is one of Mount Gambier’s most well-used pieces of infrastructure, and the Mount Gambier City Council has engaged Leadsun to install solar lighting along the entire length of the trail.

City of Mount Gambier environmental sustainability officer Aaron Izzard said the lighting project was exciting for Mount Gambier.

“Locals and visitors of all ages use the Rail Trail for walking and cycling, recreation and as a transport route to and from work and school, and it’s fantastic to see that this wonderful path will now be able to be safely used at night time as well,” Mr Izzard said.

“Being active is important for physical and mental health, and this project will assist by extending

the functioning hours of this valuable council asset.”

The lights are designed to come on at dusk and run for five hours at full brightness. After five hours, they dim down but light up to full brightness for 30 seconds when they detect the movement of a pedestrian or cyclist, enabling the path to be utilised at night and early morning, especially over the cooler months.

Works are due to be completed by Christmas, enabling locals and visitors alike to make the most of this fantastic asset over the summer holidays.

The sophisticated lights will be monitored over the internetincluding battery and solar panel information, lighting control, operation monitoring and status.

As part of the project, Leadsun has partnered with Solar Buddy to donate 160 JuniorBuddy lights to children in Papua New Guinea who live in energy poverty and do not have access to electricity.

The JuniorBuddy lights have been shown to improve health, educational, environmental, and economic outcomes for children

new career challenge which will take me out of the classroom, but indirectly still see me support local students and teachers to strengthen educational outcomes for our region,” Josh said.

“It is an exciting time to be involved in the forestry sector which is going through a major period of capital growth, investing in new innovations and technologies to futureproof the sector. I look forward to helping to promote these opportunities in the year ahead.”

Cam said a workforce development committee would oversee Josh’s workplan, operating in the same governance structure as the successful Green Triangle Fire Alliance which is a subcommittee of the GTFIH.

“Since its formation in 2018, the Hub has realised many strategic opportunities. We see this focus on building the workforce of tomorrow as a major priority, improving diversity in all its facets whilst continuously driving the safety agenda,” Cam said.

Time for adventure

Summer Reading Club returns to library

The Mount Gambier Library’s popular Summer Reading Club is back for 2022/2023 with this year’s theme Your Adventure Awaits. The club is open to four age groups - 0-5 years, 6-11 years, 12-14 years, and 15-18 years - with children invited into the library to register and receive their ‘Treasure Map’ taking them on a journey of reading challenges throughout the summer.

Mount Gambier Library children’s and youth services coordinator Kelly Lynch said the Summer Reading Club inspires opportunities to keep children engaged all summer long and participate in activities and challenges with family and friends. “The last couple of years have seen over 300 children and youth participate in the reading incentive club,” Ms Lynch said.

This year, participants can find the ‘hidden’ golden parrot for a daily prize and complete weekly challenges to win some great prizes. Upon completion, everyone enters the major prize draw with all prizes on display at the Library.

“Weekly prizes are age-appropriate for each level and include a variety of games, play-doh, specialised art materials. The major prizes consist of LeapFrog learning packs, portable speakers, mini robotics, craft packs, wireless headphones, and more,” Ms Lynch said.

The Summer Reading Club concludes with a free pool party at the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre on January 24, 2023, with refreshments supplied. As they say, you’ve got to be in it to win it. Make reading part of your child’s summer adventure and pop into the Mount Gambier Library to register.

St Anthony’s student wins Christmas Card competition

Member for Barker Tony Pasin’s annual Barker Christmas Card competition has been another success with hundreds of entries received from across the electorate. Students from years one to five were invited to submit artwork that represented Christmas in their region.

“Yet again we’ve had a fantastic response, with outstanding entries coming in from across the electorate,” Mr Pasin said. “Congratulations to all those students who took the time to create artwork that demonstrated what Christmas means to them, in their unique region of our great State,” said Mr Pasin.

Four entries were selected by Mr Pasin to feature on his 2022 Christmas Cards, one from each region of the Barker electorateBarossa, Limestone Coast, Riverland and Murray Mallee.

An artwork by Matilda, Year 4, at St Anthony’s Primary School in Millicent was chosen by Mr Pasin to appear on the card to represent the Limestone Coast.

Mr Pasin visited the school last week to congratulate Matilda and presented her with her prize.

“It’s really great to see such a festive spirit in the community at this time of year- especially amongst children,” Mr Pasin said.

Glenelg Shire Council get their man

Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Scott Martin has officially announced that council has secured a new CEO to lead the organisation from 2023. Paul Phelan has been successfully appointed to the role of chief executive officer of Glenelg Shire Council following a competitive recruitment process.

Mr Phelan (pictured) brings diverse senior leadership and change management experience in his newly appointed position. His extensive work history includes senior appointments within Victoria Police, Department of Child Safety, Queensland and Department of Children and Families (DHHS) Tasmania. He has also led multi-disciplinary departments through significant government reforms, managed multiagency emergency responses

and recovery activities and is committed to developing safe, inclusive, and resilient communities.

“Mr Phelan joined the Glenelg Shire Council in May 2021 as Director, Community Services, providing high level leadership to our broad Community Services Department,” Mayor Martin said. “In July 2022, he transferred to the role of Director, Assets, providing oversight of our multi-million dollar schedule of capital works programs. Mr Phelan has regularly performed the role as acting chief executive officer and his thorough and community-focused approach to leadership has been highly respected by council. We welcome Paul to his new role, and look forward to working closely with him on achieving our shared goals and vision for the Glenelg Shire.”

Charity was the winner at cake designers Christmas party

Earlier this month, the South Eastern Cake Designers (SECD) held their Christmas celebration dinner at the Globe Hotel.

Instead of having a Kris Kringle, each person places a donation in an envelope with their favourite charity written on the outside. One envelope was drawn with all donations being pooled to the selected charity. This year the Royal Flying Doctor Service was the charity selected.

SECD meet on the third Monday each month (February to November) 7pm in the A&H Show Society Committee Room, Pick Ave, Mount Gambier. Following each meeting there is a demonstration of cake decorating techniques with hints and tips. Supper is supplied. New website for veterans

Veterans SA has launched a new website today that will serve as a one-stop hub for current and former Defence members and their families moving to or thinking of transitioning to South Australia. Home Base SA has been developed in collaboration with individuals and groups with a link to service in the Australian Defence Force (ADF), including current serving members, spouses, recently transitioned members, and community organisations.

Information has been carefully curated to highlight the support services and programs available for the veteran and Defence community in South Australia, particularly in the areas of transition, study, career planning and progression, families and making meaningful community connections. Home Base SA will also play an important role in educating the wider community about the unique nature of service, including information about the valuable skills people with ADF experience can contribute to the workplace and how to support Defence children at school. The website was developed in response to research and feedback received by Veterans SA, that identified members of the veteran community often found it difficult to find reliable and consistent information about South Australia. With many sites offering varying information and results, Home Base SA is the go-to source for reliable and useful information for current and former serving members, their families, support people, employers, and educators in South Australia. Explore Home Base SA at www.veteranssa. sa.gov.au/home-base-sa

The Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West recently made several donations to local charitiesand organisations to either assist with disadvantaged families or support volunteer groups. Neighbourhood Watch was in need of some seed funding to assist the restart of Neighbourhood Watch in Mount Gambier while the donation to 5GTR assisted with some desperately needed equipment upgrades. All funds donated were the proceeds of event catering and a very successful Goods & Services Auction held through out the past 12 months. for the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. 3. POT PLANTS IN FOCUS

Potted plants, especially those in terracotta pots, are vulnerable to overheating. Lightly mulch and, where possible, position them out of hot sunshine. Remember that standing potted plants in saucers of water encourages root rot and mosquito breeding so instead stand them in saucers filled with sand, and keep the sand moist. This ensures roots stay cool and plants remain healthy.

Sitting majestically on the beachfront in undoubtedly one of the most desirable coastal towns in South Australia, Beachport. This stunning architecturally designed, contemporary home is a rare and outstanding example of exclusive waterfront living. Sophisticated and luxurious, the property has been impeccably designed to take full

advantage of the simply breathtaking elevated views of the pristine Southern Ocean taking in the jetty and fishing fleet. Master built in grand proportions every detail in this home has been meticulously considered and integrated skilfully to ensure the ultimate in luxury, liveability, comfort, and convenience.

Many animals are terrified by firework displays, and these can indirectly pose risks to animal safety by causing them to take flight and try to escape the loud noises.Take your dog out for exercise before the fireworks start, then after a couple of hours you can feed them a meal. A tired and well-fed dog may be less anxious during the night. If you can, stay home to be with your pet.

Pork belly with cherry BBQ sauce

1.6kg piece pork belly, rind scored at 1cm intervals; 2 tsp olive oil; 1 1/2 tbs sea salt; 1 orange, juiced Cherry barbecue sauce

2 tsp olive oil; 1 French shallot, finely chopped; 2 small garlic cloves, crushed; 120g (3/4 cup) frozen pitted sour cherries or frozen pitted cherries; 180ml (3/4 cup) tomato sauce; 80ml (1/3 cup) apple cider vinegar; 70g (1/3 cup, firmly packed) brown sugar; 1 tbs golden syrup; 1 tbs Worcestershire sauce; 1 tsp hot English mustard; 1 tsp sea salt; 1/2 tsp ground black pepper; 1 fresh bay leaf Method

Place the pork on a plate. Rub 1 tsp oil into the pork rind. Sprinkle with 1 tbs salt. Place in the fridge, uncovered, for 3 hours (this helps dry out the skin). Meanwhile, for the barbecue sauce, heat the oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add shallot and garlic. Cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until softened. Add cherries, tomato sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, golden syrup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, pepper and bay leaf. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to mediumlow and cook, stirring occasionally, for 25-30 minutes or until reduced and slightly thickened. Transfer to a heatproof bowl. Set aside to cool completely. Preheat oven to 250°C/230°C fan forced. Use paper towel to wipe rind completely dry. Place, skin side up, in a large heavybased baking dish. Rub remaining oil into rind and sprinkle with the remaining salt. Roast for 45 minutes or until the skin crackles. Carefully remove from the oven and stand for 5 minutes.Reduce oven to 160°C/140°C fan forced. Combine the orange juice, 160ml (2/3 cup) barbecue sauce, and 375ml (1½ cups) water in a jug. Pour around pork, avoiding rind. Roast, adding an extra 250ml (1 cup) water halfway, for a further 2 hours or until pork is very tender. Transfer pork to chopping board. Set aside to rest for 10 minutes. Pour the pan juices into a jug. Skim the fat from the surface and discard. Add pan juices and remaining barbecue sauce to a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Bring to the boil. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 4 minutes or until slightly thickened. Transfer to a jug. Carve pork and serve with sauce.

Warriors secure surprise victory

Mount Gambier Softball League heads into Christmas break with two quality contests

Demons and Wanderers ended this year’s rounds with an extraordinary game by both teams. The fielding was faultless all round leaving the score 1-0 Demons way at the end of the third innings.

Demons pitcher Billie Jones was extremely strong on the mound, continuing her excellent form with several strike outs in the batting box. Demons found it hard to get into a batting groove against Wanderers pitcher Rej Smith, and were left frustrated by leaving runners on bases every innings due to Wanderers strong field.

Wanderers junior Charli Kaigg showed her promise with an amazing bat landing her on second base. Demons first base Cindy Burford took many catches for the day, making it hard for Wanderers to get on base.

Demons finally found their strong batting skills at the bottom of the fourth innings with an amazing hit by Billie Jones getting two RBIs.

Demons powered home scoring six runs at the death to finish the game with a 7-0 victory.

In the other game, Concordes United came off a dominating performance against their sister side the previous week, sitting cherry ripe on top of the ladder having scored 50 runs in their past three outings and with games yet to be played up their sleeve. They threatened early after Codie Jackway was hit by a pitch but then scooted around the bases to be scored by a crisp Hannah Taylor shot up the middle. However, United came across Warriors star Sarah Polderman, cooly shrugging off significant work-related frustrations earlier in the day to

throw down genuine pace to the hot United bats, stunning them with four stike outs in the first two digs.

United’s first innings was snubbed out by a great throw from Warriors right fielder Skylea McLean to get the runner at first. Polderman led off Warriors hitting with a single, scored by a Linda Dodds hit, then Bec White continued the green in the scorebook with a double to right. Kelly Doyle and Arrabelle Searle rounded out the first innings for Warriors with hits as well. Doyle was great behind the plate for Warriors, picking up several tricky pitches in the dirt.

United got a base runner with Julie Beck wearing a pitch in her foot, being moved around on a crafty bunt to reigning league MVP Dana Jones. Beck scored before Tash Vickers took a great catch at centre for Warriors having

absolutely crushed a pitch back at Jones in the first.

Warriors remained patient in the batters box, even in the face of an adjudicated 9.25 backwards somersault foul fly catch to Taylor, scoring another two in the bottom of the second to have the lead 5-2 against last year’s premiers.

United started to get their eyes in with Jackway hitting two doubles in the third and fourth innings, Jones a triple followed by United putting four runs on the board with a two RBI Taylor double, Bec Von Duve singled, and Beck a crisp double. Amber Linquist took a lovely catch earlier in the game but was outdone by a diving Beck catch that saved at least a run.

Warriors were facing a three run deficit going into their last bat.

White lasered a triple as the lead off, scored by McLean putting

the ball into play. Smiling assassin Melissa Chuck and saintly Jasmine Disselbach had team at bats, both picking walks and giving their team much needed base runners, Vickers forced an error which scored a run before being scored by another Polderman hit to centre and that secured the win for Warriors who have struggled for the Ws so far this season but have been much improved heading into the Christmas break.

Speedway Xmas wish

Big couple of meetings for Borderline Speedway

Borderline Speedway officials have one wish this Christmas –that the weather is kind for the remainder of the 2022/23 season after the first two meetings on the calendar have been cancelled courtesy of wet conditions.

December 28 looms large with racing hopefully set to rev into action at the Glenburnie track with a full pits for a jam packed program.

Sprintcar Speedweek is always popular and with local hopes Glen Sutherland, Scott Enderl and Steve Lines part of the 30-strong field, there is plenty of interest for local fans, as well as the Stark car going around with Daniel Pestka in the driver’s seat again.

As it always does, the Speedweek racing attracts the best drivers in Australia with James McFadden home from the United States to race, Jamie Veal set to tackle the Borderline track and Lachlan McHugh all coming in off a strong 12 months of racing form.

There will also be a US flavour to the event with young driver Chase Randall (pictured) taking on the Australian summer speedway

season and with nominations yet to close at print time, hopes were high a couple of other American drivers would be heading to the Borderline event.

And the racing is not confined to the sprintcars, with 20 super sedans set to hit the track and more than 40 Formula 500 also set to race the night away in what is also a Speedweek concept.

Dave Gartner is returning to super sedans to give locals another reason to head to the track on December 28, while in Formula 500, US brothers Alex Panella and Nikko Pannella, from California, will be tackling Speedweek. There ism little time for Borderline

officials

Seventy-eight drivers have entered the national event which is running for the 30th time. Speedcars and street stocks will provide support during the three days of junior racing.

week, with all three grades having decisive winners.

After suffering a rare, and perhaps necessary defeat the previous week, Macca Pacca’s top player Travis Sweet returned to his best form at the perfect time, powering his team to a dominant 9-3 trouncing of Ben Newman’s Benz team in the A Grade final.

Kevin Patzel also remained undefeated on the night for the victors while Sanith “Sunny” Ghetia was the only shining light for Benz, also coming away with a clean sheet.

The B Grade final was a little more even; Mark, Caleb and Dale Bachmann combining with Nick Sweet for Rennick Raiders against Andrew Telford’s Outer Limits. The Bachmanns all scored comprehensive wins in their respective opening singles rubbers to give the Raiders a healthy 3-0 lead, before Peter McKenzie steadied the ship for the ‘Limits with victory over Sweet. Little separated the teams for the remainder of the match, The Raiders able to maintain their advantage Caleb Bachmann’s victory over Telford ensured his team could not be beaten with two rubbers to play out. McKenzie and Alastair Earl claimed the final two rubbers for Outer Limits to add some respectability to the overall score, but it was the Rennick Raiders who claimed the B Grade title by 7 rubbers to 5.

The C Grade decider was

a sweat in their dominant triumph over Chris McGregor’s Mac Attack. After McGregor gave his team a promising start with victory in the opening rubber, Cook led her team to a string of 6 straight victories to give Lendy and unassailable lead. Both Cook and newcomer Yousseff Malicden turned in inspiring undefeated performances for the victors, Lendy ultimately prevailing by a whopping 10 rubbers to 4.

Lowe & Godden claim Millicent Bowls Club Ladies Pairs Championship

The Millicent Bowls Club held their Annual Championship Pairs competition last week. All games leading up to the grand final were played over 15 ends, with the players playing two of their four bowls and then changing ends which is known as a two and walk competition and takes about two hours to complete a game of 15 ends. All games were played in very cold, windy and sometimes wet conditions and by 4pm the field had been reduced to the final two pairs between the defending pairs champions Adriana and Sarah Ross and Judy Lowe and Carlene Gooden.

The grand final was played over 18 ends and by the sixth end Judy Lowe and Carlene Gooden were up by three shots. By the 11th end scores were all square at seven shots apiece but by the final end Judy Lowe and Carlene Godden finished the game leading by three shots with the final score 15 to 12 giving Judy and Carlene the title of Pairs Champions for 2022/23 Season.

Riders from the Mount Gambier Cycling Club travelled up the highway to Maaoupe for their Christmas race, which also doubled as the Kidman Cup, earlier this month, one of the highlight races held throughout the year.

Near perfect weather conditions greeted the early arrivals, with a slight northerly breeze and lovely early summer weather.

However, just as the race was about to begin, a few drops of rain heralded a damper race than was expected.

Nevertheless, the 11 riders who had signed on for this 35km handicapped race on a nearflat out and back course along Maaoupe Rd behind Coonawarra, prepared themselves for the race.

First riders away were Jen and Jason Buckland, working together to try and stay away from the stronger riders chasing behind.

The next group of riders, consisting of John Cranwell, Spek Peake and Phil McGee (a former MGCC rider now based in the Murraylands who had come down for the race) had to wait 11 minutes before they could begin their chase.

After a further four minute wait, Elmer Buckland and Phil Stasiw began their chase of the leaders, while another three minutes had to pass before Patrick Langsmith and Craig Andrae were given their starting orders.

Finally, just one minute later, Nick Kidman and Jami Buckley (recently returned from a successful state track titles and named in the SA squad for the U17 National Track Championships) were allowed to begin their chase of all riders ahead of them.

A slight headwind on the outward leg made the flat course feel like a slight incline, but riders were making good headway as they pressed on towards the 17.5km turnaround marker.

Out in front Jen and Jason were making use of their generous advantage to reach the turnaround first, whilst John had broken free of his group to try and stay in front of the chasers.

With 20km to go, Nick and Jamie had caught both groups ahead of them, with all six then settling in to catch the riders ahead.

One by one the groups were picked off, until, with 5km to the finish line, they caught and passed Jen and Jason.

The pace did not let up once they were in front, with all riders keeping the speed high to try and negate the sprinting prowess at the end.

As they neared the final 300 metres, Jami opened up the final sprint with Elmer on his wheel and Craig boxed in slightly.

Jami Buckley was able to maintain his momentum to cross the finish line in first place (also taking fastest time honours), half a bike length ahead of Elmer Buckland, followed by Craig Andrae, Patrick Langsmith, Nick Kidman and Phil Stasiw.

After them came Jen Buckland, Jason Buckland, John Cranwell, Phil McGee and Spek Peake.

Riders and spectators were then hosted by John and Heather Kidman of Banks Thargo Wines, enjoying a BBQ dinner and great fellowship as they congratulated the winners of the race.

As this race was the final race in the Kidman Law Spring Series, the podium winners for the Series were also congratulated, with Jami Buckley finishing first, Jen Buckland second and Elmer Buckland third. Amber Kidman, representing Kidman Law, was on hand to congratulate the winners.

Allen the star of stroke competition

In cool gusty conditions the 26 women at the Blue Lake Golf Club were not deterred which was very evident with some excellent scores posted especially Division Two player Dianne Allen signing for nett 66.

In Division One it was another Dianne also claiming bragging rights - handicapper Dianne Perryman- posting 87/19/68.

Splits of 43/44 that included pars on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th and 16th was good enough to push good friend Carol Megaw into second spot by one stroke.

Megaw produced a solid scorecard 98/29/69 after a slow start on the outward nine with 54 strokes, including a par on the 5th, to come home with a credible 44 strokes making up ground with pars on the 11th, 14th and 15th.

Third placegetter was Helen Myers posting 91/21/70 from splits of 47/44 with pars on the 5th and 14th par threes.

First placing Dianne Allen 109/43/66 used her handicap to perfection and can be sure of a handicap reduction before her next outing.

Splits of 57/52 was good enough to cement her win from second placed Lucy Richards 111/36/75 that included pars on the 5th and 14th with splits of 60/50.

Lee Anderson 119/42/77 was third on the podium after a countback from Lesley McPherson 108/31/77. Anderson had splits of 62/56 whilst McPherson had 52/56.

Nearest to the pin 2nd shot on the 2nd winners were Elka Faure (Div 1) and Lyn Gill (Div 2)

Pro shot winner on the 5th was

awards to Mcpherson 3rd, Bev Pascoe and Allen 10th.

This week will see the last of sheduled competitions for the women until January 4 next year.

DECEMBER 10 RESULTS:

MVP to return in 2023

Marshall making his mark with 36ers in lead up to NBL1

In exceptional news for the Castec Rural Pioneers, the club has re-signed emerging star 23-year-old, Nick Marshall.

Marshall continued to improve during his second season with the Pioneers in 2022, becoming a keyplayer, averaging 21.46 points per game with a 50.25% success rate shooting from the field, together with more than eight rebounds per game. His performance earnt him recognition as the team’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2022 Season.

Marshall is currently in his second year as a contracted development player with the Adelaide 36ers and has significantly increased court time with the 36ers from 2021-22 season, highlighting his continued improvement.

Marshall is an important signing for the Pioneers and head coach Richard Hill was ecstatic he was returningnext season.

“It’s great to have our 2022 MVP returning and even better being able to announce this after he’s had a career high 15 points for the 36ers,” Hill said. “Nick brings a rare versatility and athleticism to our team. His improvement and rise comes as no surprise as his work ethic is outstanding and a tremendous example to his teammates.”

The Castec Rural Pioneers and the OneFortyOne Pioneers will commence their NBL1 South campaigns in April next year.

Huge field of SE Golf Veterans take on the Millicent golf course in final outing of the year

Sixty-one veteran golfers ventured out to Mt Burr to play the Millicent course which was in excellent condition. Naturally enough the locals fared well on this very windy day with Terry Chant taking out First Division with a great 41 points from Robe’s Wally Altschwager on 38 and Mount Gambier’s Phil Bliss on 37.

Second Division went to Millicent’s Ronnie Hately who had 40 points, but also a hole in one on the 3rd using his trusty 7 iron. He was a man of few words when receiving his prize. Alan Webster’s wonderful 39 and Peter Bateman’s 38 were acknowledged as second and third.

There were four NTPs - Ron Hately, Mike Atwell, Herman VanderHeul and Rob Harkness. The Ross Orchard Trophy went to Peter Ewer and Brenton Speck.

The group’s special Santa, Jim Hyland, gave every player there a ball for Xmas so there was no rundown. This is the second year in a row Jim has been so generous making this offer and the players were again grateful. The South EWast Golf Veterans have a break now until Kingston on January 16 and then Mount Gambier on January 30.
