Business awards return

Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce and Women In Business and Regional Development join forces

They have been absent from our calendar for a few years now but 2023 will see the return of a business awards scheme – the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce (some board members & staff pictured top right) and Women In Business and Regional Development joining forces to reimagine the categories and criteria to freshen up the concept.

Women in Business and Regional Development chair Jacinta Jones (pictured below right) said the new look awards scheme sat comfortably within the framework of both organisations.

“Close to the hearts of both organisations is the mission to champion and celebrate local businesses and to build the strength and profile of our community on a local, state and national level,” Mrs Jones said. “The Business Awards 2023 are an awards program that recognises the significant contributions made by our business community to our region’s culture, as well as social and economic growth.

“For the business community, it is a chance to celebrate one another’s achievements. For the wider community, it is an opportunity to acknowledge the courageous, creative and purpose-led business owners who, collectively, continue to transform our city.”

Nominations for the 2023 Business Awards were officially opened last week, and nominations have already flooded in for many of the award categories.

Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce and Women In Business and Regional Development are partnering with Regional

Development Limestone Coast, Business SA, Southern Cross Austero [SAFM & Triple M], Community Bank Mount Gambier & District - Bendigo Bank, Mount Glass & Glazing, WiBRD Foundation and creative partner thir.teen street to put the new look event together.

The award gala has been set for Friday, August 18 at The Barn. The nomination process has been kept simple and includes two ways to nominate; nominate another business or individual, or nominate your own business or self, with the considered award categories covering both businesses and individuals.

Kerbside collection changes on the horizon

City of Mount Gambier will roll out changes to the kerbside recycling and food organics garden organics (FOGO) bin collection schedule from Monday, July 3. General household waste bins will be collected as usual.

City of Mount Gambier waste management coordinator Jeremy Martin said on the week beginning July 3 you need to put your recycling bin out in addition to your general waste bin for collection and from July 10 put your food organics garden organics (FOGO) bin out with your general waste bin for collectiBins need to be in place on the kerb before 6am on your collection day.

The recycling and FOGO bin collections will then remain on a schedule of alternate weeks in addition to the weekly general waste bin collection. There will be minor adjustments to collection days in certain areas of Mount Gambier as part of changes to the schedule.

From July, Hallmont Estate and Woodlands Grove will change from a Tuesday collection to a Wednesday collection and the Central Business District will change from a Wednesday collection to a Tuesday collection. Buronga

Avenue, Starline Place and associated streets will shift from a Monday to a Tuesday collection.

“I encourage residents to take a look at the updated bin collection calendar to familiarise themselves with the changes made in their area,” Mr Martin said.

Changes to the bin collection schedule will assist council to improve the service, plan for future growth and development and improve environmental and sustainability practices.

“We appreciate the support of the community with the roll out of the impending changes to the schedule,” Mr Martin said.

Council is encouraging residents to download the ‘My Local Services’ phone application to receive reminders about which bin to put out each week.

“Once a resident downloads the app and enters their home address, it will pick up what day their bin collection is and they can look at the calendar on the screen. It also sends a notification the night before to remind them to put their bins out,” Mr Martin said.

“The app will enable council to send out notifications in real time if there are any delays to bins being picked up. It can also

Artist collaborative unveils stunning textile exhibition

Artist collaborative group, The Tree of Us + 1 are opening their beautiful and bright textile exhibition, Through our Eyes, at Little Blue Wren, on Sunday 18 June 2023 at 2:00pm.

The exhibition Through our Eyes features Art Quilts by artists, Suzanne Gummow, Jenny Bates, Maxine Fry and Kerrie Head. The individual quilts are wonderful art pieces and come together to form a larger piece of artistic beauty. ‘

“We liked the idea of our separate works together forming a larger work,” Kerrie said. “We challenged ourselves to work in a quirky, naïve style, using bright colours, with the water, land and sky flowing from one piece to another, and swapping some fabrics for us all to incorporate in each piece. The smaller pieces allow us to explore motifs from the larger piece in a different way.”

be used to report maintenance issues such as bin repairs, tree trimming or damaged footpaths etc. The app has already been downloaded about 300 times and linked to local home addresses. We hope residents continue to take the opportunity to use its handy features.”

Download the My Local Services app for free at the Apple App Store or Google Play.

NEW LOOK KERBSIDE COLLECTION: City of Mount Gambier Waste Management Coordinator Jeremy Martin with the My Local Services phone app.

During the production of the exhibition, one member of the group moved to the country, and then COVID-19 threw out a logistical challenge. The group had to learn to share their work across social media and via Zoom meetings. The encouragement and support of group members fed their determination to carry on. ‘

“Individual quilts depict versions of loved landscapes, and in the time of restricted travel, remind us of places we found interesting, beautiful, or connected with – all interpreted ‘through our eyes’,” Kerrie said.

Gallery owner Gareth Willaims said they were excited to welcome their first artistic collaborative exhibition to the gallery.

“Artistic collaborations not only bring individuals together on a social level, but also bring about a creative collision of ideas, influences, and inspirations,” he said. “This exhibition demonstrates how innovative, engaging and uplifting the collaborative experience can be.”

The exhibition Through our Eyes is a showcase of textile art, reminding us all that quilts can be more than just functional items, that they can be works of art.

The exhibition opened Sunday amd will run until July 23.

Story of survival

Local author to unveil poetry collection at library

Mount Gambier Library is pleased to present local author Jo-ann Mckay with the launch of her collection of poetry in ‘Rise Little One, Rise’ this Wednesday at 7pm.

Joann McKay is a survivor. At the age of three years old, Joanne’s mother died, and her life suddenly and dramatically changed forever.

“After the death of my mother, I was given away, and after many years of physical, emotional and sexual abuse, I became a ward of the state,” Ms Mckay said.

“I was dealt some horrific life experiences, but I needed to heal. My ambition was to publish a book about my journey through

domestic violence and abuse, to find my true strong self. I chose the genre of poetry because it can say so much in such a small space”.

Written from an honest survivor’s perspective, Rise Little One, Rise, captures Joann’s unique life and healing journey.

The theme is not despair, but resilience, strength, courage, and the glowing light of hope.

“I hope that in sharing my writings, to encourage other survivors to tell their stories and a reminder to be kind to one another. A simple smile can have a positive impact and a ripple effect.”

Supporting the event, The Haven Mount Gambier; a safety hub located within the Mount Gambier Library, providing information and referrals for at risk women and children.

Regional artists come together for new exhibition

The Millicent Gallery is set to unveil, ‘Nature Through the Artist’s Eyes’ – an exciting exhibition which brings together artists from across Wattle Range, many of whom have not previously exhibited.

Curated by renowned artist Julie McEwen, this exhibition features Millicent’s Chris Hollingsworth, Tanya Hunter and Sue Smith, who are joined by Penola’s Stella Scanlon, Anne Johnson, Cate Bell, Margaret Hage, Anne Miller, Val Smith, Lois Hodge and Jill Eckermann, along with Beachport’s Julie Linnell, Leah Hamilton, Keryn Campbell and Wendy Drew. There may even be a surprise artist or two.

Wattle Range Council manager libraries and gallery Janice

Nitschke said Julie was keen to involve artists from Penola and Beachport, promoting wider visitation and fresh participation.

“We are excited to have the artists also take part in a series of ‘artist in residence’ and these have previously proven to be extremely successful,” Mrs Nitschke said.

“The Millicent Gallery has always been supported by a wide range of artists and in it’s 30th year we

were keen to encourage wider representation of our outlying areas.

“It is well recognised the positive impact small to medium sized galleries have on our local communities. They inspire our residents and visitors through art, stories and ideas – creating jobs, educational and volunteering opportunities for many ages as well as fostering community excitement and pride.”

Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll will open the exhibition with guest speaker Julie McEwen this Friday at 6pm and it is open through to June 30.

The Millicent Gallery is open during library hours and on Sundays from 2 pm until 4 pm.

Blueprint for next decade now set in stone

Naracoorte Lucindale Council has adopted a Strategic Plan with six key strategic directions for 2023-2033 and a suite of priority actions for 2023-2028.

An extensive community engagement process facilitated by Jeff Tate Consulting led to the development of the new Strategic Plan. Focus group sessions, community meetings and a community survey determined what was important to the community in both the short and long term.

Following Local Government Elections late last year, the review and development of a new Strategic Plan presented a key opportunity for the council to set a fresh direction and plan for and respond to an ever-evolving community, organisation and complex external environment.

The Strategic Plan sets the vision, outcomes, and priority actions for the future and helps inform the council’s Long-Term Financial Plan and Asset Management Plans.

The six key strategic directions in the plan for the council over the next 10 years are: Plan for and manage growth

Embrace our cultural diversity

Grow the visitor economy and our regional service hub

Preserve our natural environment and enhance our built assets

Invest in key infrastructure and assets

Activate our recreation, events, arts and culture opportunities

More than 30 priority actions for the next 5 years are also identified in the Plan.

Throughout the life of the Strategic Plan, the council will undertake review points along the way to ensure the Plan remains relevant to the Council and the community, including a mid-term review of the Plan in 2025-26 and a major review of the Plan in 2026-27 following the 2026 Local Government Elections.

The council will also report on a number of Community Wellbeing Indicators against the plan through halfyearly reports and its Annual Report to generate and provide a new level of information and form a data resource for the community.

The Community Wellbeing Indicators will enable ongoing monitoring of the community’s wellbeing and will mainly be drawn from external sources such as Census data. Key measures such as population growth, dwelling and land division numbers, community volunteering rates, socio-economic factors, education levels, visitation numbers, Gross Regional Product, employment rates and business numbers will track the Community Wellbeing Indicators.

You can read through the council’s new Strategic Plan on the website and it can be viewed as a flipbook or downloaded as a PDF.

All roads led to Casterton

Casterton hosts another successful Australian Kelpie Muster

Record crowds flocked to the 2023 Australian Kelpie Muster in Casterton on the King’s Birthday Weekend with organisers thrilled with yet another hugely successful community event.

From the Rotary Art Show to the street parade, from the novelty kelpie events to the centrepiece auction, Casterton Kelpie Association president Karen Stephens described the weekend as ‘massive’.

“It was the biggest crowd we have ever had on Saturday and then we backed that up again on Sunday,” Ms Stephens said.

While the auction did not produce any record breaking prices, it still topped the $300,000 mark with an average price over the 64 quality dogs a touch under $8000.

The top priced dog went under the hammer for $25,000 – that honour going to Ash Caruana with Beloka Rumble (pictured right),

while the top priced pup went to 16 week old Beloka Sally, from Paul MacPhail (pictured far right), with a bid of $11,000.

“We knew prices would be down a bit as our auction reflects the downturn in the cattle and sheep markets but all our vendors were really happy and while not all dogs sold at auction, we did clear those few after the auction,” Ms Stephens said.

Over the event’s 27 auctions, the tally is now just under $4million.

While Saturday and Sunday are the main days of the Kelpie Muster,

the weekend kicked off Thursday night with the announcement of the Casterton Rotary Art Show winners at the Casterton Town Hall with Portland artist Brett Jarrett taking out the top prize for his painting ‘The Next Command’ (pictured below centre).

Gormans Real Estate prize for portraiture was awarded to Kate Blackmore with Wally and renowned local artist Julie Kent was awarded The Australiana - Your Vision of Rural Australia awarded proudly sponsored by Glenn Howell Optometrist and Leanne Richardson

The street parade kicks off all the action on Saturday with another fine array of floats heading down the town’s main drag.

The Combined Schools float dedicated to Dolly’s Dream (pictured below right), which was the subject of the weekend’s fundraising was the winning street parade entry as students made signs and walk or rode their way down Henty Street. Second went to Casterton Memorial Hospital and their pink Breast Screen float reminding us all how important it is for regular screenings and third place went to Casterton Playgroup and their BaaBaa Shop and some colourful hairdos.

The highlight of Saturday’s action was the novelty events with 112 competitors taking on the hill climb with Tegan Eagle (pictured below left) going back to back in the high jump with Cooper, clearing an impressive 2.52m well ahead of

second placed Sarah Lemasurier’s Cody jumping a 2.44m. event, has a tally just over $2500 at the moment with money still coming in and people can still donate via the Dolly’s Dream website and heading to the Casterton kelpie Association link. The platform for the fundraising was the $700 price tag for the donated kelpie painting.

Once again interest in the event was international for both the auction and patrons on the ground with the economic benefits spreading into South Australia with visitors to the Kelpie Muster staying in Mount Gambier and Penola, as well as Hamilton and Portland.

Ms Stephens was also quick to point to the volunteers and community groups that roll up their sleeves and ensure the event is always run smoothly.

“You just cannot run an event like this without the dedicated volunteer base that put their hand up every year,” she said.

Seaside wellbeing festival shines a light on health & happiness

The Robe Health Harmony and Happiness Winter Festival on the June long weekend was again a huge success with organisers and patrons alike now looking towards the Summer Festival on January 12 and 13 next year.

Different healing modalities, expertise and products from amazing stallholders were showcased at the festival in a friendly, relaxed and stimulating environment. It was great to see people returning to connect with stallholders to stock up on products, experience a healing session or organize a future appointment.

Erica (pictured), Frances, Joy and Katie Ann were kept busy as many gleaned new personal insights from the readers. Other people went on their way feeling more relaxed and having greater ease of movement after their Crystal Light therapy session with Tracy, bodywork session with Naomi or healing sessions with Heather, Onessa and Don. Dazzling jewellery and crystals, colourful clothing and handmade items, books and health products were displayed.

The event was made possible thanks to its major sponsors:Robe Icecream Shop, Caledonian Inn, Robe & Districts Community Bank, Robetown Chocolate, Nampara Cottages, Robe Auto & Marine, JJ Aitken-Grey Masts Accommodation. The committee would also like to thank all the raffle donors Robe Bakery, Robe Foodland, Karatta Wines, Robe Post Office, Woodsoak Wines, Viet 21, Holiday Robe Retail, BodyTune Health Care, Mind Potentials, Don Morrison, LunaNoire Creations and Kylz Kreations.

A big thank you goes to the stallholders for coming to make this Robe festival happen. The amazing local support given to this festival is truly

appreciated and helps to spread smiles around the town and the region. It was good to see some locals amongst the daily raffle winners. Originally established in 2021 at Casterton Primary School, the LFP has recently undergone a strategic relocation, now residing amidst the vibrant greenery of the Casterton Community Garden.

This decision, driven by a shared vision of fostering greater community support and accessibility, promises to strengthen the invaluable role of the pantry in addressing the pressing needs of individuals and families.

The concept of ‘Give what you can, take what you need’ has proven to be not only popular but also essential within the community, especially as interest rates increase and the cost of living puts pressure on individuals and families.

Situated on Murray Street, the LFP serves as a valuable resource, providing basic necessities and essential household goods to the people of Casterton.

One of the key advantages of the pantry is that it operates without judgment, questions, paperwork, or registration for its users.

United Way Glenelg executive officer Nicole Carr said the pantry ensured that access to food was always available.

“If someone is in need of food, they can rely on the pantry until other services become available,” she said.

The relocation of the pantry was facilitated by Kane Forbes, the Hands Up Casterton community engagement officer, along with

the support of the Rotary Club of Casterton, who have taken on the responsibility of stewardship for the pantry.

The construction of the pantry was carried out by Heywood Men’s Shed, and two more pantries are planned for the Shire, with one in Heywood and another in Portland. The Casterton LFP has been adorned with artwork by local artist Julie Kent.

Everyone in the community is encouraged to contribute or take items from the pantry as they please or according to their needs.

People requiring food, crisis and supported accommodation can visit St Vincent de Pauls at 32 McPherson St, Casterton. Opening hours: Wed - Fri 10am - 4pm Sat 10am - 12noon or telephone (03)5581 2161

If you wish to donate, simply purchase one of the following items [making sure all items are non-perishable, unopened & within best-before/use-by-date] and place it in the pantry.

• Rice, pasta, pasta sauce

If your older pet has started to find it a little harder to get up and down or is a bit slower on those daily walks, they may be feeling the effects of the colder weather. The lower temperatures can have a huge impact on our senior pets and just like people, the drop in temperature can aggravate stiff joints or flare up arthritis. Be mindful of adjusting your exercise regime to consider how your older pet may cope with exercising during the colder months. Remember that any extra weight on your pet will also make joint pain worse –especially in winter.

Bell’s report card for 2023-24 Budget

Yahl Primary School collects windfall in South Australian Government’s Budget

Three million dollars for Yahl Primary School is the biggest ticket item in the South Australian Government’s recent State Budget for the electorate of Mount Gambier.

Member for Mount Gambier

Troy Bell welcomed that windfall and was also supportive of the new stamp duty policy but did have a level of disappointment that the vast infrastructure spend had been injected into metropolitan projects when he believed road infrastructure and telecommunications in this region needed a financial boost.

“It is exciting news that Yahl Primary School has secured $3 million funding to upgrade its ageing facilities,” Mr Bell said. “As a small school in a regional area the upgrades will allow this school to continue to provide excellent educational opportunities for children in that community.

Congratulations to the schools Governing Council and their Chairperson Brad Crisp together with Principal Chris Morrison who have been advocating and fundraising for these upgrades.”

The Member for Mount Gambier had been involved in discussions with local real estate agents, including Key2Sale’s Al Lamond, regarding stamp duty policy and so the new parameters were a welcome addition to the 2023-24 State financial blueprint.

“I do love the stamp duty being abolished for first home buyers – it will allow first home buyers to compete,” Mr Bell said.

The 2023-24 State Budget abolishes stamp duty for first home buyers that purchase a new home valued up to $650,000, or vacant land valued up to $400,000 to build a new home, in a move designed to help more South Australians into home ownership while boosting supply of new homes in the housing market.

In addition, the budget retains the existing First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) and increases its property value cap from $575,000 to $650,000. The FHOG is available to eligible first home buyers who build or buy a new home.

Together, these measures mean eligible first home buyers who build or buy a new home valued up to $650,000 will now receive up to almost $30,000 in stamp duty relief as well as a FHOG payment of $15,000, bringing total relief from the state government up to $44,580.

It’s estimated the measures, which will cost $147.3 million over four years, will benefit 3800 first home buyers a year.

Given the sugar hit of $130million to this region in the last budget, delivering on election promises, Mr Bell admitted he did not expect huge funding commitments to this region but

he was concerned about the neglect of road infrastructure and telecommunications.

“We have to acknowledge that $130 million in the last budget and we are still working through those developments, including the technical college, upgrades to the hospital – they have been budgeted for but not delivered yet,” he said.

“My disappointment in the

budget is the big infrastructure spend is in Adelaide again and

I am disappointed more road infrastructure in the Lower South East was not funded and really the one we need to keep pushing is the proposal from Telstra for complete coverage in this area.”

That proposal was a $5million ask from State Government coffers, with Telstra funding 25 per cent of the proposal, the Federal

Government tipping in 50 per cent and local councils picking up around 5 percent of the upgrade cost.

Mr Bell did temper his criticism as he threw his support behind the $194million for flood affected areas in the Riverland.

“I accept and I understand why that flood assistance is necessary and a totally understandable big ticket item in the budget,” he said.

Unlocking the future

Naracoorte Caves host student environmental camps

Becoming an ‘Earthkeeper’ is a vital step in the Young Environmental Leader Program (YELP). Collecting the four keys to environmental success bodes well for our landscapes’ future.

Young Environmental Leaders from across the region headed off to Naracoorte Caves last month for the annual Earthkeepers camps. Being out in the landscape and connecting to nature through hands on learning provides a valuable experience to students. Students learn about supporting a healthy and sustainable environment.

The Limestone Landscape Board offer these camps as part of the Young Environmental Leaders program for Year 5 – 6 students in the region.

The camp out is the second

Italian chicken rice bake

2 tbsp olive oil

2 chicken breast fillets (or 4 chicken thigh fillets)

1 brown onion, finely chopped

3 garlic cloves, crushed

275g (1 1/4 cups) medium-grain white rice

170g (3/4 cup) drained semi-dried tomatoes, chopped

activity of the year long program.

The Earthkeeper camp is a vital step in the program as students receive four keys along their journey. Keys represent Knowledge, Experience, Yourself and Sharing. Students were presented with their second key at this event.

“The weather was kind to us and the students embraced the opportunity to engage in outdoor learning and fun exploration

activities,” Limestone Coast landscape educator Damien Bickley said.

“Students undertook a variety of activities during the camp including bush walks and outdoor theatre fully immersing themselves in the landscape.”

One enthusiastic leader said it had been a great experience becoming an apprentice Earthkeeper.

“Thank you for providing me with the knowledge to make the world a healthier place for all the flora and fauna to live.”

375ml (1 1/2 cups) Chicken Stock

300ml thickened cream for cooking

60g baby spinach leaves

100g (1 cup) pizza cheese

Basil leaves, to serve

Method

Preheat oven to 190C/170C fan forced. Heat half the oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Cook the chicken for 3 minutes each side or until golden brown. Transfer to a chopping board to cool slightly. Add remaining oil to the pan. Cook the onion, stirring, for 5 minutes or until soft and golden. Add the garlic and rice. Cook, stirring, for 30 seconds. Transfer to an 8-cup-capacity ovenproof dish. Chop the chicken into bite-sized pieces. Transfer chicken and tomatoes to rice mixture in dish and stir to combine. Add the stock and cream to the frying pan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Pour over the rice mixture. Season and cover dish tightly with foil. Bake for 30 minutes or until rice is tender. Remove dish from oven and turn oven grill to high. Carefully remove foil (steam will escape). Fold through spinach leaves, in 2 batches (they will wilt in the hot mixture). Sprinkle top of dish with cheese. Place under grill for 3 minutes or until golden brown. Top with basil to serve.

Author to launch latest novel at two library events

Award-winning writer and playwright Margaret Hickey is headed back to Glenelg Libraries to discuss the release of her latest crime novel Broken Bay.

Following on from the bestselling Cutters End and Stone Town, which was selected as one of Glenelg Libraries’ Great Summer Reads, Broken Bay again features Detective Mark Ariti, who has managed to go on holiday at precisely the wrong time and precisely the wrong place.

Broken Bay, a small fishing town on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, has become the scene of a tragedy. Renowned cave-diver Mya Rennik has drowned while exploring a sinkhole on the land of wealthy farmer Frank Doyle.

As the press descends, Mark’s boss orders him to stay put and assist the police operation. But when they retrieve Mya’s body, a whole new mystery is opened up around the disappearance of a young local woman twenty years before . . .

Originally from Beechworth, Victoria, Margaret Hickey holds a PhD in Creative Writing and works as a senior English teacher. Her first crime fiction novel, Cutters End, won the 2022 Danger Prize and was shortlisted for the 2022 Ned Kelly Awards in the Best Debut Crime Fiction category.

Celebrating 60 years of bowls

Sixty years and counting. The Kalangadoo Bowling Club has just celebrated six decades since it was established and it is an outlier in the Lower South East – it is the sole remaining grass green facility.

The committee of the War Memorial Park agreed to promote the formation of a bowling club and it was at a 1963 meeting that the club was formed. R Winser was elected president, H Smith vice president, D Parker secretary, C Bartlett treasurer and D Walker minute secretary.

As with so many community clubs. The Kalangadoo Bowling Club was built on the blood, sweat, tears and passion of volunteers.

It was a volunteer workforce that planned and installed the green and in 1964 an associate (ladies) committee was installed with a marquee set up for players while the constructing of clubrooms and a kitchen was completed.

That part of the project, with the club sitting at 50 members and 35 associates, was made possible by a generous donation from Mr J Hunt

The current membership sits at 28, with no associate members at this time but it is a club still well supported by the community with the club still maintained and run by hard working volunteers.

The club had two men’s pennant sides both competing in finals in the LSEBA in the 202 –23 season and has maintained strong support from sponsors including Kalangadoo Hotel, TDC Livestock, Nutrien, Bucik Tyrepower, O’Connor and Graney, Signs by Brumby, Collins Court Butchers, Geoff Gray painters, Décor House with some new sponsors waiting in te wings to sign on.

The club would like to invite more future members to join in and get involved in the great sport of bowls for all ages.

SECBL wrap of round six action

MEN Saints relished the return of Jackson Bowden for this second contest against Roos. At half time Saints led by 16 points and then took complete control to record a blistering 62-29 second half.

Saints 113 (J Haggett 33, H Mules 32, J Bowden 17) d Roos 64 (N Forbes 18, J Wilkinson 16)

Cougars responded well to the challenge of playing League leader, Blue. After a rather tardy start, Blue lifted to lead by 13 points at the main break. Cougars however, “dug deep” to hold Blue to a further 4-point lead at the end of the game.

Bulldogs Blue 89 (D Reid 22, S Berkefeld 20, B Young 15) d Cougars 72 (B Male 26, T deWit 22).

Bulldogs White forfeited to Panthers due to players being away and sidelined due to illness.

Panthers 20 d Bulldogs White 0

WOMEN

Saints managed to keep their unbeaten record intact despite the absence of Edie Easterby and an untimely ankle injury to Mackenzie Burke in the first quarter. An 8-point lead at the end of the first half set up the win for Saints following an even contest which generated 28 points each in the second half.

Saints 58 (P Venn 26, M Burke 11, P Paul 9) d Roos 50 (M Griffith 19, S Mobbs 12, E Bouchier 7)

Cats’ efficiency took Cougars by surprise resulting in a 10-point buffer at half time. A lift in intensity saw Cougars close the margin to 3, 47-50, at three quarter time and then snatch a 2-point win in the closing minutes. Cougars 74 (M Wormald 21, M Horrigan 21, T Crouch 18) d Cats 72 (A Berkefeld 22, L van Eeden 20, J Hibberd 16)

The third quarter performance, often called the premiership quarter in sport, proved to be the match winner for Bulldogs. Bulldogs outscored Panthers 20-9 in this period. Panthers, below full strength, regrouped after this lapse to close the gap to just 3 points at the final siren.

Bulldogs 67 (A Collins 19, M Reid 15, T Human 12) d Panthers 64 (A Duncan 31, T Bryant 15, C Mitchell 13)

Finals spots up for grabs

With only a couple of weeks remaining in the Mount Gambier Table Tennis Autumn season, competition for finals spots in all grades has really started heating up.

Both A Grade matches produced comfortable victories, Travis Sweet putting on another masterclass to guide his Villains to a 7-4 win over Scott Davies’ Gunners, while Trotters number 1 player Chandler Jantosh also kept a clean sheet to power his team to a dominant 8-3 triumph over Ben Newman’s Rovers.

The first B Grade match was played in modified format, both the Potters and Baggies reduced to two players a side. Andrew Telford kept his singles sheet clean for the Baggies, while Doug Megaw and Dapo Olutayo both recorded one win apiece for the Potters. The final outcome was decided in the doubles, Telford teaming up with Terry Nesbitt for an easy win over Olutayo and Megaw, giving Baggies the 3-2 overall win. The second B-Grade match saw Rob Halleday’s Cottagers take on Gary Hocking’s Spurs. Cottagers kept Spurs at arm’s length the whole evening, eventually posting a slim 6-5 win. The third B-Grade match resulted in a more comfortable win, Cameron Beal’s Hammers taking care of Alex McGregor’s Seasiders to the tune of 7 rubbers to 4 thanks to an awesome performance from Nathan Schubert.

Both C Grade matches were close encounters this week. Chris McGregor’s Claret’s returned to the winners’ list, overcoming Lenny Van Der Linde’s Rams to keep their finals aspirations alive. Van Der Linde continued his strong form for the season, maintaining a clean sheet on the night, but he couldn’t prevent his team falling by a narrow margin of 6 rubbers to 5. The final C-Grade match of the night was another tight affair, Keith Pryor starring for the Blades, well supported by Mark Devaney as they overcame Lorraine Halleday’s Canaries by 6 rubbers to 5.

Mount Gambier Table Tennis Club is always welcoming of new players of all ages, experience, and capability. Practice is held at 7pm on Monday nights, and competition is at 7pm on Wednesday nights at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds Hall. To register your interest, please contact the club at mtgtabletennis@gmail.com or find the club’s Facebook page, or just come along on a Monday night and speak to a friendly welcoming committee member.

Pioneers men make it three on the bounce

Women’s five game winning streak comes to an end

Reigning champions the Ringwood Hawks welcomed back

Marena Whittle and put together a dominant performance to beat end the five game winning streak of the OneFortyOne Mount Gambier Pioneers Women with a 22 point victory on Saturday night. Ringwood was still clinging to a place in the top eight despite having lost two of their previous three matches, but they will be looking to build some momentum now with Whittle back in the lineup joining Ariel Jones and Marta Hermida.

It was only a one point game at quarter time but it was in the second period that the Hawks, with the backing of thier home court crowd, start to assume control and the lead was double figures by the half.

The Hawks then continued to take over further to lead by as much as 20 points in the third quarter, by 26 in the fourth and ended up winning by 22.

Reigning Grand Final MVP Marena Whittle was terrific for Ringwood with 22 points, nine rebounds and nine assists with Ariel Jones contributing 20 points, four boards and three steals.

For the Pioneers, Perth Lynx WNBL signing Miela Goodchil (pictured below right) put up another 25 points and six rebounds for Mount Gambier with Cassandra Brown adding 17 points, seven boards and three assists, Haliegh Reinoehl 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Sherrie Calleia nine points, four boards and four

dimes.

It was better news for the Castec Rurual Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers Men as they look to start building some momentum in the second half of the NBL1 South season.

They took care of the Hawks, 10598, to make it three on the bounce after a mid season run of losses.

The Hawks started well to lead by five pointsthe first break before scores were all square at 50-50 at th main break.

The Pioneers began to take charge in the third quarter going on a 10-0 scoring run to open up a 13-point lead, and that would ultimately prove the difference as they held out the Hawks in the finish to win by seven.

The imrpoves the Pioneers record to 9-5 on the season, as coach Richard Hill (pictured above right) starts to see the kind of form he would be hoping for as the business end of the season

Mount Gambier Legends baseballers get the job done at Adelaide tournament

The Mount Gambier Legends Baseball Club sent two teams to the Adelaide Invitational Masters Baseball Carnival held at the Southern Districts Baseball Club at Christie Downs over the King’s Birthday Long Weekend. Outside of the local Legends Baseball Masters Tournament held in April this is the first time two Legends teams have represented Mount Gambier. The Carnival was held over two days with both teams playing three games on Saturday a further round robin game Sunday morning and both teams played in finals in their respective divisions in the afternoon.

Legends Blue, playing in Division 1, played out a 4 all draw in their first game against Northern Aces, a game which was marred by errors and not much batting by either side. Next up was Adelaide Aces Grey and they were given a bit of a touch-up by the boys from the South East winning 10 runs 0 with Phil Clark in complete control on the hill picking up six strikeouts in three inning to completely shutdown the Aces batters. John Verrity was in great touch with the bat picking up three safe-hits from three at bats. Next up was sister team Adelaide Aces Blue who pulled off a 6 run to 2 win against a fighting Legends whose best batter was Jason Henke with two from two at bats. Last game was against

the Bulls, on Sunday morning, who didn’t manage to score a run against a rampaging Legends team that scored seven.

Luke Lovekin was the standout batter with two hits from three at bats.

The playoff for the Bronze Medal in their division was played in the afternoon and the legends team had a convincing eight run to two win against Adelaide Aces Grey.

Nick Pink pitched five strikeouts in three innings while Phil Clark and Pink were best with the bat picking up two hits each. Adelaide Aces Blue defeated Northern Aces in the Gold Medal Game.

In Division 2, Legends Gold found the going tough against Flinders in their first game of the series going down ten runs to three.

Adelaide Bluze was next up and the Gold team were too strong running out winners twelve runs to six. Steve Wanganeen was best with bat hitting safely three times from four at bats. Fourteen hits from four inning between both Legends and Playford in game three saw a tight tussle with the Mount Gambier team getting over the line finally winning ten runs to seven. Best of the batters was Peter Walter who batted a 1000 with three hits from three at bats.

First up on Sunday morning was the Adelaide L’aces, an all-women’s team. They put up an excellent fight giving the Legends a bit of a

Local hockey talent on show

scare. A win for the Mount team would mean playing for gold or a loss relegated them to a play off for bronze. Eleven runs to nine saw the Legends hang on to go through to the main game. Best batters were Phil Altschwager with three from three and Simon (Hippy) Wright with two from two. In the gold medal playoff Flinders proved too strong for Legends winning fourteen runs to two. Flinders completely outhit their opponents with the Legends only hitting safely three times in four inning giving them a silver medal in a great weekend of baseball for two Mount Gambier Legends Baseball teams.

Tightly contested monthly medal

Edwards keeps getting the job done at Blue Lake

The rescheduled 3rd Round of the Short Course Trophy sponsored by Grant and Dianne Perryman was played in much better weather conditions after the inclement weather the previous week causing a cancellation of the event.

The course held up well considering the previous days heavy rain, albeit a bit heavy underfoot. The short course golflink handicaps are reduced and Division 1 was 0 - 19 and Division 2 0 - 45 but can still be a challenge to score well.

The Mount Gambier Golf Club hosted 27 lady golfers last Wednesday to compete for the June Monthly Medal, in conjunction with 3rd Round of the Handicap Championship, 3rd Round International Bowl, Putting and the 1st Round of the Winter Salver.

The course played hard with T Blocks way back and pin placements in very difficult positions.

Lindner takes out overall highgun

Shooters defy conditions with outstanding scores at gun club monthly competition

The Mount Gambier Gun Club held its monthly competition earlier this month in sunny conditions being fine and warm even though there was some slight dull cloudy patches the shooters still obtained some perfect scores.

The opening event was the Rymill Family 25 Tgt Club Skeet Championship.

This competition was enthusiastically shot as the competitors were after points for the yearly aggregate award and showing off their skills. Kevin Mules 24/25 won overall and A from Greg

Kessegian 21/25, Darren Beyer 23/25 won B, whilst Warren Lindner in fine form 23/25 won C from Matthew Robinson 30/33.

The DiGiorgio Family Wines 25 Tgt District Double Barrel Championship event was exceptionally well shot with some competitors obtaining perfect scores and after a lengthy shoot off Greg Kessegian in top form with a perfect 128/128 won overall and AA from Warren Lindner 127/128, Scott Fleming 31/32 just edged out Kevin Mules 30/32 to win A, Malcom McGrice 24/25 narrowly

The O G Roberts & Co 50 Tgt South Australian State Continental Single Barrel Championship was up next and this being a rather difficult event was again shot with great accuracy and determination

Warren Lindner was in fine form with the only perfect 50/50 won overall and AA from Max Medhurst 47/50, Steve Chambers 46/50 won A grade from Scott Fleming 46/51, Stuart Bowd 45/50 easily won B

from Dale Robertson 40/50 and Reece Fleming our upcoming junior member with a credible score of 41/50 took out C grade from Doug Rohde 37/50.

The Black Crow Club gained a donor member being Matthew Robinson.

The South East Autotrade Highgun award over the three events was successfully won by Warren Lindner with a credible score of 98/100.

The next competition will be on July 8 with the AGM being held at the club after the shoot.

Millicent Golf Club team gets the job done in Tri Challenge in

Twenty-three Millicent members (team pictured below right) ventured to Loxton on the June Long Weekend for the Tri Challenge event between Loxton, Blackwood and Millicent Golf Clubs. Millicent members participated in the Stableford Competition on Saturday and Heidi Muhovics had the fantastic score of 42 points to be the best player of the day.

Loxton hosted the ‘Sheer Arse’ Competition on Saturday evening.

Millicent’s team of nine players were Anthony Driessen, Ian Greenwood and Glen Tilley who played shots from the Bunker to the Green, Heather Anderson, Andy Fisher and Peter Cornish (Heather and Andy’s friend) chipped to the green with a driver and Bronwyn Clarke, Lois Tilley and Tricia McLeod (Heather and Andy’s friend), who putted.

After all three clubs completed their shots, the scores were tied and in a ‘putt off’ Glen Tilley scored 5 points to record a win for Millicent’s team.

On Sunday there were 89 players in the field for the main event – the Tri Challenge. The best 10 scores from each club were calculated and in a very close contest, Millicent were declared the winners on 330 points, followed by Loxton and Blackwood, both on 329 points.

Millicent’s team consisted of Jamie Muhovics 37 points, Glen Tilley and Spike Warren 35 points, Scott Lonergan and Bec Shanks 33 points, Heather Anderson, Anthony Driessen and Andy Fisher 32 points, David Seymour 31 and Bronwyn Clarke 30 points.

Jamie Muhovics and Bec Shanks were awarded prizes for returning the best scores for Millicent men and women, with scores of 37 and 33 respectively.

The third and final round of the Tri Challenge event will be held at Millicent on the October Long weekend. Currently, Blackwood hold the lead on 711 points, followed by Millicent 666 and Loxton 607. Hopefully the home course advantage will see the Millicent Golf Club retain the Tri Challenge Shield.
