EDITOR’S LETTER

t was the win West Coast just had to have, and for which the rest of the competition was eternally grateful. Down by a game-high 22 points 14 minutes into the final quarter, the Eagles kicked the last four goals to stun Richmond by four points in front of more than 50,000 rapturous fans at Optus Stadium last Sunday night. The game was watched by 961,000 people on Seven and Fox Footy, which suggests that Sunday night games on the eve of a public holiday should become a permanent feature on the fixture. The match-winner came inside the last minute from veteran spearhead Josh Kennedy, who curled through a set shot from the boundary line, having been on the receiving end of a lightning pick-up and spearing pass from Liam Ryan. The win placed the Eagles (8-5) back in the hunt for a top-four berth come the end of the season, while the Tigers (7-6) are mired in eighth place. But before we go writing any obituaries for Damien Hardwick’s men, we only have to cast our minds back to 2019. The Tigers had a similar record and, indeed, were

outside the eight before they came roaring home and winning every game thereafter up to and including the Grand Final. But it was un-Richmond like for the Tigers to drop their bundle in that fashion in the last 10 minutes, with Hardwick lamenting their lack of composure at both ends of the ground when the game was at its most frantic. Perhaps their travel regimen from Sydney to Perth and back again over the previous fortnight finally took its toll.

u Adam Goodes is well within his rights to turn down the AFL’s offer to be inducted into the Australian Hall of Fame this year. Having completed his five-year eligibility period, Goodes’ ascension to the Hall of Fame was a no-brainer given his long list of team and personal accolades. Now is not the time for a deep dive into the reasons

that drove Goodes from the game at the end of the 2015 season. The Sydney star was upset over the constant harassment and angst from the other side of the fence at the backend of his career. He was supported by those close to him – his club, his teammates and his coaches – but not by those running the game.

It was un-Richmond like for the Tigers to drop their bundle

The Tigers will be glad to be back at home and the bye could not have come at a better time for them, both physically and mentally. But they will take a keen interest in several of this weekend’s matches to see how things are looking with the run home to the finals about to start in earnest. If Brisbane and Port Adelaide take care of business as they should against North Melbourne and Gold Coast, they will hold a two-game break over the Tigers in fourth and fifth place respectively, with nine games to go. It is mightily difficult, although not impossible (as the Western Bulldogs demonstrated in 2016) to win the flag from outside the top four, so the Lions and the Power need to keep winning.

The AFL has since apologised for not doing more to protect Goodes from the racist slurs he was subjected to. It has never really come to light what Goodes made of that apology, but one can only assume from this latest stand that time has not healed those wounds. That is his prerogative, but one hopes that further down the track, Goodes might

reconsider the offer to become a member of the Hall of Fame. It is the ultimate recognition of a player’s career and takes in criteria such as ability, games played, integrity, sportsmanship and character. So many inductees talk about what the game gave to them. In Goodes’ case, it gave him incredible highs, but let him down at the finish; somehow the game needs to repair that ground. ONE WEEK at a TIME Entering last weekend, it was thought the top eight was just about set for the season and that the intrigue from now until the end of August might be those sides jockeying for the top two, the double chance and home elimination finals. Games such as Friday night’s Geelong-Western Bulldogs clash, which pits third (Cats) against second (Bulldogs), are a case in point. But then came the stunner at the SCG last Friday when 17th-placed Hawthorn upset Sydney by 38 points. At 8-5, the Swans remain in sixth place and the surprise packets of the season are still well entrenched in the eight. But their next four games – Port (away), West Coast (home), Western Bulldogs (away) and GWS (away) – become critical. Of course, whether any of the teams outside the eight are good enough to make their move remains to be seen. Fremantle is a game and 14 per cent outside the eight, with the Giants half a game further back. The Giants should be kicking themselves. They played three

deplorable quarters against North Melbourne in Hobart last Sunday, only to finally come good in the final term to settle for a draw. GWS has Carlton and Hawthorn at home in the next two weeks and must win both to give itself any chance of muscling in on the eight later in the season. Perhaps Essendon, which resumes its season on Sunday against the revitalised Hawks in Launceston, is the team to watch.

NAB AFL Rising Star RILEY THILTHORPE ADELAIDE

A

delaide key forward Riley Thilthorpe was awfully unlucky not to win a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination after kicking five goals on debut against Hawthorn in round six. Problem was that Hawk Jacob Koschitzke did the same at the other end – in a winning team. But he was not going to be denied this time around. The No. 2 selection at last year’s NAB AFL Draft booted three goals for the Crows as they came from the clouds against St Kilda in Cairns last week, kicking the last seven goals of the game to win by six points. The match-winner was a beauty – a kick over his head from the top of a congested goalsquare that just bobbled across the line with one minute remaining. The 18-year-old from West Adelaide has averaged two goals a game and 1.4 contested marks through eight games and is already a fan favourite at the Crows. ASHLEY BROWNE

hen the story of the 2021 season is written, St Kilda’s regression will serve as one of the more surprising aspects of the year that is quickly becoming one of the most open in recent memory. Last Saturday night’s loss to Adelaide in Cairns all but extinguished the Saints’ rapidly diminishing finals hopes after they squandered a 36-point lead in the wet and humid conditions up north. But it wasn’t just the result that would have disappointed Saints fans most. It was the nature of the complete disintegration – particularly in the second half – which would have worried coach Brett Ratten.

150 GAMES “That was hard to go through and especially the way we went through it,” he said post-match. “We’re just not strong enough and hard enough. You can fall away in an area, but you just don’t get beaten by minus 23 (contested possessions in the last quarter). It’s unacceptable. “(The) conditions were not about how beautiful you could kick the ball, it was how high you could roll your sleeves up. We didn’t do that.” St Kilda’s issues are threefold – injuries to key players, the stagnation of several big-name recruits and its next generation not progressing as many would have hoped. Rowan Marshall is set to return in the coming weeks, which will be a significant boost, but the Saints’ unhealthy reliance on him remains an issue. Brad Crouch picks up plenty of the footy but hasn’t damaged opponents as much has he would have liked, while Bradley Hill has performed only in patches throughout the year. There also remains considerable queries over a few of the young stars who haven’t had the seasons they would have liked. As Ratten admitted, St Kilda’s finals hopes are all but over as it

looks to pick up the pieces for the remainder of 2021. It’s hard to quantify just how far the Saints have fallen this year, but it’s perhaps summed up by the gap that’s emerged between them and the Western Bulldogs – a side they beat in an elimination final last year. The fact they have fallen below their opponents last Saturday night – and last year’s wooden spooners – is also concerning. While a Carlton-style full-scale review may not be needed, the Saints should be using the bye to try and understand the scale of what has gone wrong in the first half of their ill-fated season.

he AFLW trade period formally closed last week with 13 trades and two free agency moves completed. It was a busy period for some clubs with Carlton, Melbourne, GWS, Geelong and North Melbourne particularly active. The Blues will be licking their wounds after Tayla Harris, Chloe Dalton, Jess Hosking, Katie Loynes and Alison Downie all departed. Co-captain Loynes and Downie were asked to explore their options by the club. Carlton loses two of its best 10 players in Harris and Dalton, while Hosking’s decision to join her sister at Richmond in the dying stages of the trade period will also be felt. On the other side of those trades, Melbourne and GWS look big winners. The Demons get their hands on Harris on a one-year contract and the key forward could be the final piece of the puzzle to take them to a flag if it all comes together. Melbourne also traded for star Geelong midfielder Olivia Purcell. The 20-year-old is recovering from a torn ACL and is unlikely to make the new December start time, but will prove a valuable asset long-term. The Giants picked up Loynes to bolster their midfield and leadership, as well as Dalton who was one of the breakout midfielders of 2019.

They also brought in Jasmine Grierson from North Melbourne. Following the retirement of Sharni Norder, Collingwood needed to get busy and find a readymade ruck replacement. The Magpies did so by signing Downie from Carlton as a free agent and added depth behind her in Sabrina Frederick from Richmond. The Gold Coast Suns went through the 2021 season winless and were active in trying to improve their list, bringing in midfielder Claudia Whitfort from St Kilda and ruck Vivien Saad from the Kangaroos. The AFL handed priority picks to the Suns, Cats, Eagles, Saints and Tigers ahead of the July 27 draft, but put in the proviso that they could not trade those selections.

ON THE MOVE: Star forward Tayla Harris will line up with her third AFLW club after joining the Demons, while former Blues co-captain Katie Loynes is headed to the Giants.

FORMER SWANS OWNER MOURNED

DANIHER HONOURED

ASHLEY BROWNE

G

eoffrey Edelsten, the flamboyant medical doctor who made football history by becoming the first private owner of a League club, passed away last week. He was 78. Edelsten, who was born in Carlton and grew up as a fanatical Blues supporter, made his fortune in the early 1980s by opening a series of high-end medical clinics in Sydney, replete with chandeliers and grand pianos. He was among the first in his profession to introduce bulk billing. But football was his passion and he made national headlines when he spent $6.4m to buy the licence to own and operate the Sydney Swans in late 1985. He then embarked on a massive spending spree, bringing Tom Hafey in as coach and star players from rival clubs including Gerard Healy (Melbourne), Merv Neagle (Essendon), Jim Edmond (Footscray) and Geelong trio Greg Williams, Bernard Toohey and David Bolton. High-flying Warwick Capper was already at the club, but became a star and the club’s most marketable player. Williams won the first of his two Brownlow Medals while playing for the Swans in 1986. Edelsten also ploughed plenty of money into marketing and publicity, usually with himself front and centre, and the fans began flocking to the SCG. Games against powerhouses Essendon, Carlton and Hawthorn attracted crowds of 30,000, double what the Swans drew before. It helped considerably that under Hafey, they started winning. His time in charge was fleeting, however, and he finished up as chairman and owner before the end of his first season. Williams led the tributes for Edelsten from the Swans fraternity,

telling 3AW: “He was a great man, Geoffrey. People had an opinion of him, but he was a lot different than the actual opinion. “He was a great guy with a great heart and he loved the Swans even though he barracked for Carlton.” Indeed, Edelsten, who was rarely out of the headlines after his time with the Swans, never lost his love for the Blues. He was a regular at Carlton games and major club events, as well as the Brownlow Medal, and was made a life member of the Blues in 2013. Private ownership ultimately failed in League football, but Edelsten nevertheless left a great legacy. When the Swans were floundering in the early 1990s amid calls for the Sydney experiment to end, then AFL chief executive Ross Oakley continued to back the club, saying that when on-field success returned, it was demonstrated that the large crowds would return. He was proven correct.

u Neale Daniher headlines a large group of football identities who were recognised in the Queen’s Birthday honours list. The former Essendon star and Melbourne coach was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for his tireless work around fund-raising for a cure for Motor Neurone Disease, highlighted by last Monday’s Big Freeze 7 as the lead-up to the clash between Melbourne and Collingwood. AFL Commission chairman Richard Goyder said Daniher’s example, in the face of a debilitating disease, was inspirational. “Neale Daniher is a very public example of the very best that we see in people – those who step forward to give their time and effort in the support of others in our community,” Goyder said. Daniher was one of many football people to be recognised. They included former Essendon star Michael Long (OAM) and Northern Territory broadcaster Charlie King (AM) for their work in the indigenous community and Jan Cooper and Bec Goodard for their contribution to the women’s game. SUNNY SIDE UP THE GANG’S ALL HERE: Now the Suns have to make sure they can keep them – (back row) Ben King, Jack Lukosius and Izak Rankine; (front row) Noah Anderson, Matt Rowell and Sam Flanders.

The Gold Coast Suns are slowly building and their endgame will be making finals on the back of some classy and highly-driven youngsters. ASHLEY BROWNE

W

hen you are a football club just 11 years into its existence and your list of former players still playing well at other clubs includes some of the best in the competition, you are a club that has had significant issues with retention. Tom Lynch, Steven May, Dion Prestia, Jaeger O’Meara, Charlie Dixon, Jarryd Lyons, Jack Martin, Trent McKenzie, Jack Scrimshaw … the list goes on. Having kissed goodbye so much of the significant talent that played for the club in its early days, the challenge facing Gold Coast is to make sure there is no repeat mass exodus from Metricon Stadium now

12  AFL RECORD

AR14 p12-14 Feature.indd 12

that it is blessed with a playing list that, while still in the early days of its development, has the potential to be far and away the best the club has ever had. And who knows, to take the Suns to a faraway, magical place they have never been to before – the finals. Gold Coast’s draft strategy in recent years has been deliberate and straightforward. Former list manager Scott Clayton’s final draft in 2017 brought Wil Powell and Charlie Ballard to the club. The following year, with former Richmond and Melbourne list manager Craig Cameron now in charge, and with Stuart Dew freshly installed as coach, it was Jack Lukosius, Izak Rankine and Ben King, pretty much the three best available players with those selections. Twelve months on, it was all about midfielders – Matt Rowell, Noah Anderson, Sam Flanders and

Jeremy Sharp. Last year, it was Elijah Hollands. There has been no secret as to what the Suns have been trying to do. “Bring a young group of talented players through at the same time,” Cameron told the AFL Record. Hand in hand with that was selectively targeting experienced players to go with it. Richmond premiership utility Brandon Ellis was taken as a free agent at the end of 2019 and, 12 months later, he was joined by another ex-Tiger in Oleg Markov. Both were selected for their outside run and their first-hand knowledge of the culture of excellence at Tigerland. Hugh Greenwood was recruited for his inside grunt and, again, his experience at Adelaide when the Crows were up and about and in premiership contention. His level of care for his teammates is off the charts. The Suns understand that right now the big-name malcontents and free agents from rival clubs don’t have Gold Coast on their wish list, other than for an end-of-season holiday. Their plan is that might change down the track. Last season’s relocation of almost the entire AFL competition, they hope, might have planted a seed among some that it might be a good place to come and live and work as a footballer. At some stage they will actively seek to bring that big-name player to the club. But Cameron and his chief executive Mark Evans point out that it takes all kinds to build a premiership-winning list. At Richmond, there were plenty of high-end draft selections but players such as Shaun Grigg, Bachar Houli and Ivan Maric were mature-aged recruits who filled on-field needs while helping to build and establish a strong foundation.

Hawthorn’s 2008 premiership team, of which Evans was the general manager of football, had the likes of Brent Guerra, Trent Croad, Stephen Gilham and, of course, future Suns coach Dew, who were critical members of the brash young team that upset Geelong. “We haven’t modelled ourselves on any other club,” Cameron said. “We just have looked at what has worked and looked at what we needed and suits our needs and us as a footy club on the Gold Coast, which is different to a club in Melbourne. “It is player dependent, but there is enough evidence to suggest that once you get to 60-80 games, you get more consistency of performance, but I’m also a big believer that you can’t just gift games.”

S

o now that the elite young talent has walked through the doors of Metricon Stadium once more, how do the Suns figure to keep them there for the long term? It was the question that consumed Cameron, Dew and Jon Haines, the Suns’ general manager of football, who also came on board after the 2017 season. For various reasons, some of their own doing and some that were out of their control, the Suns weren’t able to establish the right sort of environment and culture that made players such as

JON HAINES

O’Meara, Prestia, Dixon and others want to commit to the club for their entire careers. “In 2018, we learned about what worked and what needed extra support,” Haines said. “It was about every aspect of the program being really strong and in a sound position.” Everything was on the table – high performance, welfare, conditioning, medical and coaching. Welfare was the interesting one. The perception in football circles is that version one of the Suns failed badly in the area of welfare. A group of young men in their teens, or barely out of them, were let down by the lack of a support network at the club to help them deal with both the demands of AFL football and the added complication of moving out of home to another part of the country. The reboot of the Suns includes some new terminology. ‘Welfare’ is out, replaced by ‘personal excellence’. Whichever name it goes by, Gold Coast is taking it seriously and even post-COVID with football departments across the AFL taking a major hit, the Suns are as well-resourced in this area as any team in the competition. “We thought that was an important strategic investment for us,” Haines said. “What we have seen is that the players, their partners and their AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  13

parents have built a really strong connection with the people in that space to create a strong bond with the club and within the Gold Coast community.” By bringing together such a large and talented group of players of a similar age, the plan is that most of them will want to stick around and play together. The club has instituted various events and programs that it hopes will help solidify the bond between the players, but is also banking on what Haines describes as “the natural growth and synergy that young people find together”. “What we have found through the last few drafts, knowing each other through their junior years, the actual connection is naturally really strong. They have that natural connection,” he said. King, Lukosius, Rowell and Anderson enjoyed living at Evans’ place after they were first drafted and they, together with Ballard, still have dinner with the CEO once a week. “There are also some really influential leaders in that group, some really competitive and focused individuals who want to be part of something special and really want to drive it and they play a really pivotal role in the connection and relationship side of things,” Haines said. “There are times the staff have to drive it, but what we are also finding is the players are actually taking over the steering wheel themselves and driving it themselves.” The Suns are satisfied with their salary cap projections and with the contractual situation of their emerging stars. Ballard and Powell are contracted past 2023, Rowell and Anderson are signed up until the end of 2023, while Lukosius, King and Rankine are locked in until the end of 2022. Given what has happened before, there is a natural anxiety on the part of the Gold Coast management team that the players are happy and want to stay in the long term. They just hope the culture they are establishing, as well as the excellent facilities that are a legacy of the 2018 Commonwealth Games staged at Metricon Stadium, will be the carrots that entice them to stay. Going forward, if players choose to leave, they hope it will be because they’re not getting a game or the myriad of other reasons why players choose to change clubs and

SWEATING IT OUT: The Suns have brought together a strong group of young talent they hope will come through together.

The players are actually taking over the steering wheel themselves HAINES ON GOLD COAST’S QUEST FOR SUCCESS

not because aspects of the Suns aren’t up to scratch. “We sit here today thinking the environment and the fundamentals are really strong,” Haines said. “Ultimately the players will make their decisions on how they’re feeling about each other and where the club is at.” Talk to the figureheads at the Suns and they’re at pains to say that the club has yet to achieve anything. They’re 4-8 after last Saturday’s loss to Fremantle, pretty much confirming another year of missing the finals. They know that if they are well beaten in the middle of the ground, teams are a good chance of getting hold of them. The season-ending knee injury to co-captain Jarrod Witts exposed their ruck vulnerabilities

once and for all. They’ve been pinch-hitting ever since and plan to add depth and experience in that position at the end of the season. But they also know they are tantalisingly close to that critical stage when a group of their best players reach the 60-to-80 game stage, by which time there are more consistent performances. It is the stage of their evolution that the good teams start to leave their mark. “We feel we have a core group of players who are starting to get to know each other on and off field and that’s going to be why we’ll be successful,” Haines said. “The fundamentals are sound now and if the players believe in it, then that’s where the success is going to come from.”

AFL RECORD NATHAN BUCKLEY

BUCKS READS THE PLAY AGAIN He has one of the smartest minds in football, so it was not surprising Nathan Buckley knew his time as Collingwood coach was up. ASHLEY BROWNE

N

athan Buckley is no longer the coach of Collingwood. Last Monday’s clash with Melbourne at the SCG, which the Magpies fittingly won by 17 points, brought down the curtain on his magnificent association with the club as a player from 1994 to 2007, assistant coach in 2010 and 2011, and senior coach thereafter. As a player, there have been few better. His glittering 260-game career included a Brownlow Medal, a Norm Smith Medal, six best and fairests and seven All-Australian blazers. In 1993, his one season with Brisbane before joining Collingwood, he was the inaugural winner of the Rising Star Award. The problem with being a champion Collingwood player any time in the past 75 years, and in Buckley’s case one of the greatest Magpies

16  AFL RECORD

It was clear there was an appetite for change in the program NATHAN BUCKLEY

of all, is that you can go through an entire career without tasting premiership success. For Buckley, there were the losing Grand Finals of 2002 and 2003 to Brisbane, and he joined Peter McKenna, Len Thompson, Peter Moore, Billy Picken, Ray Shaw and Wayne Richardson as all-time greats of the club who never played in a premiership side. Buckley’s only taste of premiership success came in 2010 as an assistant to Mick Malthouse, but after he assumed the coaching role in 2012 with what the wisdom of hindsight confirms was an ill-conceived and mismanaged handover from Malthouse, the bad luck that marred his playing career surfaced again. The Pies made the finals in five of his nine full seasons in charge, with the 2018 Grand Final as sorry a tale as any of the many Magpie Grand Final defeats that preceded it. Dom Sheed’s mark and goal from a difficult angle inside

the last two minutes handed the West Coast Eagles a five-point win. The Pies then inexplicably blew a home preliminary final to the GWS Giants the following year and with that went his best chance of becoming a Collingwood premiership coach. A difficult 2020 in the hub was followed by the disastrous trade period with four players traded out in what was a salary cap-induced fire sale. Buckley, in one of his few lapses as coach of the Pies, badly mangled his messaging as Collingwood fans demanded answers. The shambolic leaking of the outcome of the ‘Do Better’ report led to the abrupt departure of club president Eddie McGuire, Buckley’s strongest ally at the club. It was McGuire, aghast at the prospect of Buckley coaching elsewhere, who was the architect of the succession plan back in 2010. But he also backed the coach strongly at the end of 2017 when

SEN.com.au

14/6/21 6:16 pm

Buckley and all aspects of the club’s football operations were the subject of a searching review. Collingwood’s 3-8 start to this season sealed the deal. It was clear that a major reboot was needed and Buckley, with nearly 30 years of AFL football experience under his belt, also understood that the forthcoming battle for the boardroom at Collingwood would serve as a referendum on his coaching future. He read the play as well as ever and chose to walk away. “Everyone has their time … and mine has come. I’m really content with the decision that has been reached,” he said. “It was clear there was an appetite for change in the program and I could sense that as well. “I can’t categorically say I want to be here for the next five years. “I think it’s the right decision and there’s enough of that feeling internally that it feels right.”

The interest now is what comes next. He has the capacity and the intellect to do pretty much whatever he likes in the game. Watch any Channel Seven game from 2008 and see how his razor-sharp observations elevate the broadcast. You can imagine come this year’s finals that he will be in a commentary box somewhere. As a football savant, he could pivot nicely to a general manager of football role or list management. If anything, the past 12 months have shown him what not to do when it comes to constructing a team. The fascination will come if Buckley chooses to wear the polo shirt of another club. It is the move he should probably have made after his playing days because the senior job at Collingwood would always have been his for the taking when he was ready, and to have experienced

LASTING LEGACY: Nathan Buckley, who began his career with Brisbane, leaves the Magpies as one of the greatest figures in the club’s history.

life at another club would have held him in good stead. But to be able to walk away with a smile on his face and his reputation enhanced after nine-and-a-half years as the public face of the biggest club in Australia means he has served the toughest coaching apprenticeship yet. Circumstances at his next club, if he goes down that path, are likely to be easier. Football is starting to give its sacked coaches a second chance. Brett Ratten is well settled at St Kilda, while Michael Voss, Matthew Knights, Justin Leppitsch and Mark Williams are also being discussed as senior coaches again in the future. Based on his body of work at Collingwood, Buckley would likely vault ahead of them to the front of the queue, if he has the appetite to do it all again. Away from the white-hot glare of the Holden Centre, let’s hope he does.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Out of there like a bat out of hell MCG, JUNE 14, 2021 u This year’s Big Freeze at the ‘G

event proved an opportune time for the AFL to purge itself of one of its worst decisions of all time. It’s been almost 10 years since the AFL gave the green light to ageing rocker Meat Loaf to headline the 2011 Grand Final entertainment. The big fella looked and sounded well past his use-by date and the League were left a tad

AR14 p18 Pic of the Week.indd 18

embarrassed. So when AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan was offered the chance to be one of the sliders at Neale Daniher’s annual fund-raiser, he took the ghost of Meat Loaf with him into the large ice bath, much to the amusement of Daniher and his daughter Bec. Despite the game being held in Sydney, it was another successful day with plenty of funds being raised for a cure for Motor Neurone Disease. continues to defy his ageing body. Fresh after a week out of the side, the 33-year-old returned to the line-up for last weekend’s crunch clash with reigning premier Richmond at Optus Stadium. If ever the Eagles needed a game-breaker, it was when they trailed the Tigers by 22 points halfway through the fourth quarter. Enter Kennedy who answered the call as Adam Simpson’s side came over the top to record a famous four-point win to keep their top-four hopes alive. Following back-to-back majors late in the first quarter, Kennedy slotted a crucial goal early in the final term, before coming up with a clutch play that put the Eagles in front. After diving to handle a pinpoint Liam Ryan pass, Kennedy dusted himself off to coolly slot a 35m snap from the boundary. The match-winning play capped a superb overall performance from Kennedy, who in his 271st game finished with four goals, three goal assists, seven marks, five grabs inside 50, six inside 50s and a team-high eight score involvements. Kennedy’s 15 disposals, his most in a game this season, equalled his best return since round nine, 2019. Simpson was full of admiration for Kennedy’s game-defining display. “When he’s fresh, he’s good, so he might need a week off every second week,” Simpson joked with reporters. “JK’s ability to ice the game like that was very special.” ANDREW SLEVISON

ANSWER MAN Melbourne’s James Jordon made his debut this year and his first nine matches were wins. What is the most number of wins before someone has played in their first loss? MICHELLE TAN, VIA EMAIL MG: Collingwood’s Albert ‘Harry’ Lauder holds the record. Lauder played in 18 successive victories from his debut in 1926 aged 27. His fifth game, in 1928, was a winning

Grand Final. During the 1929 season, Lauder’s first 13 games were also wins, with his first loss coming in the semi-final against Richmond. It was Collingwood’s only loss for the year. Two weeks later, he played in a premiership and followed up with another flag in 1930. His career record was 32 wins from 36 games, which included three premierships. Carlton’s Alby Ingleman played for the club when it was an early powerhouse, being a member of

the 1907 premiership team. During 1905-08, he played 21 games for the Blues for only one loss. His first 17 games were wins. Hawthorn’s Kelvin Moore also had an amazing start in the VFL. After two wins in 1970, he played in 15 wins in 1971 before he experienced his first loss, in round 18 against Richmond. His record after 26 games was 25 wins and a premiership. Moore finished his career at the end of the 1984 season with 300 games and three flags.

u In the second-last

round of the 1964 VFL season, Melbourne was away to Hawthorn at a wet Glenferrie Oval. The Demons were on top of the ladder, but such was the closeness of the competition, they had to win one of the last two games to guarantee a finals appearance, while the Hawks had to win both. At three-quarter time, Hawthorn led by 16 points, but Melbourne, with Norm Smith as coach, fought its way back. With 90 seconds remaining, the Hawks were up by two points. The ball was in the Demons’ forward line when a boundary throw-in resulted in a big punch from the ruck contest going to Hassa Mann, close to the boundary line. Mann swung around and snapped an amazingly tight goal to put Melbourne ahead and it held on in the mud to secure an important win. As it turned out, if the Demons had lost, they would have missed the final four. Instead, they went on to contest their 11th successive finals series and win the club’s 12th premiership, its most recent flag. MARK GENGE

INJURY CHECK

BRAVE ROO LEAPS BACK INTO ACTION u It’s been a long, tough season for North

Melbourne, but you have to admire the way the Roos have accepted their lot and set about rebuilding for the future. There is plenty of emerging talent at Arden St, but like most clubs starting from the bottom, North needed every one of its experienced group to help guide the stars of tomorrow. When news came through earlier this year that key defender Robbie Tarrant had to have a mass removed from his kidney, it was a devastating blow. The 2016 best and fairest had to rest and await his test results before contemplating a return to the field. The good news came in two doses – the mass was later discovered to be a benign tumour – and the vice-captain was able to work his way back to fitness. Finally, he took to the field for the first time in 2021 last Sunday at Blundstone Arena as the Roos fought out a thrilling draw with the GWS Giants.

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK u Since gaining FWD status in round six, Josh Kelly (152) has seen his ownership increase each round. From round seven, the Giant has scored 105 or more in each game and averaged 119. Kelly was traded in by 5600 Fantasy players ahead of his 39-disposal game in Hobart last week, which included five marks, six tackles and two goals. With more midfield minutes, plus Carlton and Hawthorn in the next two games, Kelly could find himself priced at more than $800K and the No. 1 Fantasy forward.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

u It looked like Sean Darcy (132) would miss round 13 after injuring his hamstring the week before. Not only did he get up to play, he dominated the contest, winning 40 hit-outs on his 24th birthday. Aaron Hall (133) continued his epic season with 35 disposals in the role that has seen the Roos get the ball in his hands at every opportunity in the back half of the ground. Ball

magnets Jack Steele (133) and Touk Miller (130) did their bit despite their teams losing.

CASH COWS OF THE WEEK MICHAEL BARLOW MEDAL VOTES

5

TOM HIGHMORE STK, DEF – 110 u After being in and out of the St Kilda side in the past month, Highmore took 13 marks to go with his 22 disposals to post the highest score of his career. Super-handy as coaches rely on their rookies as part of their best 18. JOEL AMARTEY SYD, RUC/FWD – 92 u Backing up from 74 the round before, the Swans third-gamer took seven marks and kicked two goals.

4

3

LUKE FOLEY WCE, DEF – 90 u His 22 disposals, seven marks and three tackles will make him a popular option after the Eagles’ bye. LUKE EDWARDS WCE, MID – 90 u Could he be as good as his father, Crows champion Tyson, who averaged 95 points from 2006-10? JAI NEWCOMBE HAW, MID – 87 u After a record 14 tackles on debut, the mid-season draftee is set to make plenty of coin.

u The Hawk Pig is as cheap as he will ever be and looks to be back in top form after the blip on the radar against the Suns before his bye. His 125 last week came from 34 possessions and was his fourth score over 120 in his past six games.

u It was tough going for coaches who held the superstar mid, as it was for those who paid top dollar for the returning Cat after he dished up just 71 from 20 possessions and 90 per cent game-time. Will be back in top form soon.

u The Saint cash cow has been serviceable and despite not being fully fattened, can be traded given the unique opportunity of having four trades this week. Has dropped below 50 only once.

DEF u Unfortunately we can’t always pay top dollar for the in-form superstars, so we are forced to look for value. The intercept specialist is well under-priced and looked to have played himself back into form against the Roos with 14 marks and 107.

WEST COAST EAGLES

MID u As frustrating as the Eagles endurance machine has been, we need to come out of the byes with a better side and removing rookies is more important than disappointing premiums. His 74 against the Tigers was his fourth game in a row below triple-figures.

u A good opportunity to get rid of some dead weight and the Pie youngster is a prime example. Despite not being worth much more than a basement rookie, being able to replace him with a player who has had their bye and will generate cash is a win-win.

DEF

u If you are in the market for an under-priced and unique selection, look no further than the in-form Bomber. While all the talk has been about Darcy Parish, Langford has put together a five-game stretch averaging 102, and 113 in his past three. ALSO CONSIDER: Zac Williams, Marcus Bontempelli, Touk Miller

Tom Highmore, Callum Coleman-Jones, Jacob Hopper

u Phew! This is the last weekend of the dreaded bye rounds. With only five games this weekend, we have four trades to use as we scramble towards our best 18 players for the last time this season.

u As we come out of the bye rounds, it is important to get your team set for the finals which start in five weeks’ time for default leagues. Continue to downgrade/upgrade and build your bank.

u Picking captains this weekend is tricky. I’ll be looking at putting the VC on Jack Macrae as he is yet to score below 100 this season. If he scores fewer than 110, I’ll roll with Tom Mitchell as skipper.

WARNE DAWGS

u The Hawk has hung around for several weeks despite mediocre returns. This week is no different given the fixture change leaving many coaches scrambling for 18 players. Was solid with 80. ALSO CONSIDER:

DESTROY

u Unfortunately the defender who showed outstanding form before the bye has to be traded after a nasty injury that will require surgery. Between rounds four and seven, he scored three hundreds, including a best of 113. ALSO CONSIDER: Lachie Sholl, Ronin O’Connor, Jack Darling

Suns v Power

ROUND

14

HEAD to HEAD

ON THE ATTACK: Connor Rozee gives Matt Rowell the slip in the Power’s big win over the Suns last season.

Played 12: Gold Coast Suns 1, Port Adelaide 11. Since 2016: Gold Coast Suns 0, Port Adelaide 6. Most recent game: round 1, 2020, Gold Coast Suns lost to Port Adelaide by 47 points at Metricon Stadium. Highest attendance: 34,288, round 23, 2017, at Adelaide Oval.

GOLD COAST SUNS

Highest score: 15.14 (104), round 5, 2011, at Football Park. Lowest scores: 3.2 (20), round 23, 2017, at Adelaide Oval. Home record: 0-8 Away record: 1-3 Greatest winning margin: 3 points, round 5, 2011, at Football Park. Longest winning sequence: 1, round 5, 2011. Most goals in a game: 4, Brandon Matera, round 5, 2011, at Football Park.

Match Preview

u There is no doubting the bright long-term future of the Suns, but they continue to stumble in the short-term and they blew an opportunity to demonstrate their progress with a listless performance against an undermanned Fremantle last week. They return home to face Port Adelaide on Saturday afternoon in the knowledge that since Stuart Dew became coach in 2018, they have won just two games after round 13. They fall away badly in the second half of the season, so what we need to see is some resilience and strong late-season football. Matt Rowell came through his first game back unscathed last week and will be better for the

run. The Power’s 21-point loss to Geelong at home was yet another indication they can’t quite match it with the very best teams in the competition. But Ken Hinkley’s men are good at beating up on some of the lesser lights and they should comfortably take care of the Suns, with their bigger bodies and speed through the centre of the ground. Charlie Dixon will enjoy being back at his old home ground and shapes as a match-winner here. Port now has West Coast breathing down its neck in the battle to supplant one of the top four teams and cannot afford a slip-up. ASHLEY BROWNE

PORT ADELAIDE

Highest score: 20.15 (135), round 23, 2017, at Adelaide Oval. Lowest scores: 7.14 (56), round 21, 2014, at Metricon Stadium. Away record: 8-0 Home record: 3-1 Greatest winning margin: 115 points, round 23, 2017, at Adelaide Oval. Longest winning sequence: 11, round 9, 2012, to round 1, 2020. Most goals in a game: 6, Sam Gray, round 23, 2017, at Adelaide Oval.

Prediction: Port Adelaide by 18 points

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne

Blues play to same tune It’s shaping as another wasted season for Carlton with finals virtually out of the equation.

T

here was a fair degree of buzz and excitement about Carlton in the pre-season, and we at the AFL Record are guilty as charged. “No More Blues. It’s Time For These Guys To Shine” trumpeted our round two cover, replete with images of skipper Patrick Cripps, gun midfielder Sam Walsh and boom recruit Adam Saad. The piece didn’t exactly say the Blues had arrived, but did address the high expectations among Carlton people and football watchers in general that this would be the season the club’s latest reboot, which began in earnest in 2015, would start to show on the scoreboard and on the ladder in the strongest and most consistent manner yet. We even suggested that a return to finals football was a distinct possibility. Instead, the Blues are 14th on the ladder, with a 4-8 record and a run home that shapes as meaningless as every season since 2013, the last time they played finals. Problems abound everywhere for Carlton. It can’t defend and it gets scored against too easily in the final minutes of each quarter, which leads to questions over its fitness. The Blues’ top end is elite. Walsh has become one of the best midfielders in the competition. Cripps’ form has dipped a touch, but he remains a premier on-baller.

86  AFL RECORD

DISPIRITING: The Blues leave the field after their disappointing loss to an undermanned West Coast in round 12; (inset) assistant coach John Barker, whose exit after a decade of service to the club was undignified.

Several big-name recruits have not provided value for money

Jacob Weitering is among the best key defenders in the League, while Harry McKay is every bit the power forward Carlton hoped he would become, even if it has been a slow burn. But it falls away dramatically after that. Some of the top-end draftees the club selected haven’t panned out as well as hoped and several big-name recruits have not provided value for money. The Blues’ four wins for the season have come against the teams below them on the ladder, and they are 0-7 against those above them. The most recent defeat, against West Coast at the SCG in round 12, was the most dispiriting of the lot. The Eagles hadn’t won there since 1999 – admittedly it was a neutral venue this time – but the indictment for Carlton was that West Coast had nine of its full-strength team missing. There was an alarming lack of intensity and the result, a 22-point win to the Eagles, was never really in doubt. The contributions made by the so-called bottom six of West Coast highlighted so much that is wrong with the Blues. The general mood of the Carlton faithful that evening and the following day varied between resignation and disgust. Perhaps reading the room, president Mark LoGiudice announced a review of the football department, starting immediately. In keeping with the season, the missteps started straight away. It emerged that pre-empting the formal announcement of the

review, incoming president Luke Sayers (LoGiudice is stepping down at the end of the season in a development unrelated to the on-field performance) had been in Sydney, canvassing the thoughts of senior players and others close to the team. To make matters even murkier, LoGiudice then declared that irrespective of the review, senior coach David Teague’s position through 2022 was secure. So, we are left with a review to be overseen by the incoming president who may have been making his own inquires to the side, while the outgoing president might already be pre-empting some of its findings. And then there was John Barker, the respected long time Carlton assistant coach – and interim senior coach through half of 2015 – who told the Blues he would be stepping down from his role at the end of the season, only to be given the “don’t come Monday” by the club. This was an undignified ending after a decade of excellent service. With Marc Murphy’s 300th game now just five games away, there is still a bit to play for. But it is only the middle of June and supporters are again looking towards next year. How depressing.
