Stylish retreats for inspiring timeouts
Since 2001 we have been searching for the new, the aesthetic, the inspiring. Looking for places, experiences and people that broaden our horizons, appeal to our senses and inspire our thoughts. When we find what we are looking for, we come to rest. Then we have discovered one of the hotels that we would like to introduce to you as a Lifestylehotel.
Lifestylehotels™ takes you to places where you are allowed to unfold. Not only discover new places, but also discover yourself. The world we would like to take you to, is a world of allowing and mindfulness. Mindfulness is more than a buzzword in many of our member hotels. Farmtotable concepts, the support of local artists, a particularly resourceconserving operation and handling of the hotel, or the meditative experience of nature are just a few examples of the innovations of our member hotels. The demand for aesthetics and quality is and remains central to our vision of a modern hotel industry, but more mindful and sustainable in the sense of the new spirituality.
Behind all this are ideas and above all people our hoteliers who create something unique with their honest efforts. We want to understand their vision in order to continue telling their stories. At some point, we start searching again, put out our feelers and activate our sensors, because new things are always being created and existing things are changing.

Stylish new member hotels await you in this issue as well. For the first time Lifestylehotels™ is represented on the American continent, in Mexico and the USA. In Europe, there is news in Antarctica, Austria, Greece, Italy, Spain and Germany.

White Desert Outstanding adventure with comfort and style
In the heart of the pristine and untouched wilderness of Antarctica, where the icy winds whisper tales of ancient solitude, lies the White Desert—a haven that transcends the boundaries of mere luxury to embrace the raw beauty of the frozen world that cradles it. Here, amidst the ethereal landscapes painted in hues of white and blue, emotions unfold like delicate petals, revealing the profound connection between the human spirit and the icy embrace of the southernmost continent.
When the surreal light of the midnight sun falls on the vast snowy landscape, a deep sense of infinity sets in. Yet, it is not a desolation that breeds loneliness; rather, it is an exquisite communion with nature that evokes a cascade of emotions. The crackling silence of the antarctica becomes a symphony, echoing the profound stories etched into the icy canvas over millennia.
White Desert's Echo Camp, stands as a beacon of warmth and luxury hospitality amidst the frozen grandeur, seems almostlike a mirage—a refuge for those seeking solace in the heart of the ice. The ethereal beauty of the surroundings is mirrored in the design of the camp where every corner reflects a commitment to preserving the pristine environment.
"In Antarctica, where icy winds tell ancient tales, solitude becomes a symphony, and the frozen beauty whispers to the soul—a reminder that in the coldest places, self-discovery and nature's poetry resonate eternally."
White Desert, Antarctica: Explore the Unknown
Patrick and Robyn had a vision in 2004. Ever since then, the possibility of exploring Antarctica has been made available to the public with a luxurious twist. White Desert has also successfully managed to combine adventure travel and eco-tourism. How do they do it? Find out here.
Can you please provide an overview of White Desert and its mission, and how you two started it?
Patrick: As a teenager, I was inspired by Sir Ranulph Fiennes’ speech at the Royal Geographical Society, and it fuelled my desire for an extraordinary life filled with polar expeditions. After leaving university without a clear path, I embarked on a decade of expeditions, earning a world record in Antarctica in 2002. I was driven by the thrill of exploring uncharted territory, rather than following established routes.
In 2004, Robyn joined me on my second polar expedition, and this trip ignited the idea of offering people a chance to experience the rarely visited interior of Antarctica. The concept for White Desert emerged during a gruelling 2,000-mile traverse of Antarctica where, trapped in a tent, we envisioned a luxurious retreat with gourmet food and private jet access. We wanted to share the breathtaking beauty of Antarctica’s deep interior, a realm usually reserved for explorers and scientists, by creating a camp where regular people could enjoy relative luxury while witnessing this extraordinary world.
What unique experiences or expertise do you bring to the field of eco-tourism and adventure travel?
Patrick: With three world records and Robyn’s own polar exploration background, our company was founded by passionate
and accomplished guides and explorers. Operating in the pristine environment of Antarctica has challenged us to develop innovative practices. For instance, we were the first Antarctic operator across both government and private sectors to trial sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). We also reduce packaging and even peel and compost potatoes in Cape Town to minimise waste transportation back from Antarctica. Our aim is to set an example and foster collaboration in these efforts. Antarctica, a place without a local population, is governed collectively by 56 signatories of the Antarctic Treaty, showcasing remarkable global collaboration. White Desert has been part of the International Association of Antarctic Tourism Operators (IAATO) for nearly two decades. Robyn has played a pivotal role in the IAATO’s governance for the past five years, advocating for sustainability initiatives across the whole industry.
How do you ensure that White Desert’s expeditions are environmentally sustainable and have a minimal impact on Antarctica’s delicate ecosystem?
Patrick: We have a whole list of systems and protocols that we use to make our operations more efficient every year and are constantly looking to partner with firms utilising cutting-edge green/clean technology. As an example, we built Echo on sleds so that there are no foundations and we can remove the camp without a trace. We have logistics systems that streamline the removal of all waste from the continent back to Antarctica (including human and organic). We have invested in new electric skidoos (snow mobiles), and as mentioned we are the first to trial sustainable aviation fuel. We use solar power to heat our pods in camp. We have also been carbon neutral since 2007 and are investing in new blue carbon projects
like planting sea grass meadows, which are 35 times more efficient at capturing carbon than forests.
How do you envision the future of ecotourism and adventure travel, and how does White Desert plan to stay at the forefront of these trends?
Patrick: As a species, we must be more mindful of our daily choices and their impact on biodiversity and our planet’s future. Antarctica, a vital climate change battleground, houses 70% of the world’s freshwater and unique biodiversity. The future of eco-tourism should prioritise slower, less frequent, low-impact and enriching travel experiences. Operators like us need to constantly innovate in the area of sustainability, supporting Antarctic science and responsible governance to leave places better than we found them. Our seagrass project is a step in that direction. Exploration is in our nature, but we must do it with heightened awareness. Travel is a privilege carrying the responsibility to preserve the places we visit. We have only one planet, and safeguarding nature requires sacrifices. Green technology, like sustainable aviation fuel, is more costly but essential for reducing our footprint. We are exploring options to blend SAF with conventional fuel to mitigate costs.

“Relax body and mind away from it all”
Hotel Nesslerhof, Salzburg, Austria: Feel the spirit of natural happiness
A warm welcome and desire for vitality? Over the last few years, the owners of the Nesslerhof, Tina and Hermann Neudegger, and their team of “guest whisperers” have listened very closely to what guests want from their next holiday at the Nesslerhof. These requests formed the basis of extension and building works, of an even more relaxing and diverse holiday destination. A destination full of vitality, or what you might call natural happiness.
Highlights since July 2023: We were curious and invited hotel owner Tina Neudegger for an interview. “At the hotel, the demand among guests for large suites with their own spa was very high. For that reason, we’ve made the suites on the fourth floor of the main building even more luxurious,” explains Tina. All of the suites on the top floor now boast large terraces and an unparalleled view, and four of them have a hot tub or sauna in the outdoor area.
“The highlight is our 194 m² rooftop suite Bergmagie with its own 3 x 8 metre pool and a sauna on the south-facing terrace. While swimming, you can marvel at the unobstructed view of the striking Großarl mountain landscape – it’s like nothing you’ll find anywhere else,” enthuses Tina. The popular south-facing double rooms have also been extended, and you can now watch the sunrise and sunset from the bath.
But that’s not all the news and latest on the renovation: work is currently being carried out on expanding sechzehndreiundvierzig [1643], where a total of four different room categories are being created. From winter 2023, it will be home to brand new suites featuring an Alpine and modern design. “It’s called sechzehndreiundvierzig because that’s the year the Nesslerhof was first mentioned,” says Tina, revealing the secret behind the name of the extension.
And of course, the guest requests for the spa haven’t gone unnoticed. In future, wellness lovers won’t just be able to enjoy the lovely adults-only spa with its various saunas and eight relaxation rooms, but also a new, impressive 1,370 m² water landscape. The outdoor pool with integrated hot tub and loungers was extended to 25 m based on numerous guest requests. It is positioned alongside the natural swimming pond, whose water area has also been enlarged to approx. 800 m². New relaxation spaces and seating areas plus a small garden bar in the spa round off the wellness offering during your holiday or spa day.

Gradonna****s Mountain Resort
Breathtaking location and outstanding architecture
The Gradonna****s Mountain Resort with its 42 chalets and the hotel is located directly on the Kals slope in the Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei. The designer alpine hotel at an elevation of 1,350 metres offers pure natural pleasure inside and outside. The wood shingle facade and the large window fronts allow the landscape to “flow” into the hotel. The materials and colours of nature define the interior down to the smallest detail. Local spruce, stone pine, linen and loden create a pleasant atmosphere. Kals marble and wood sculptures award the resort an exclusive but down-to-earth flair.
The 115 rooms, 42 wooden chalets and twelve suites in the hotel tower offer a direct view of the Großglockner and 60 further 3,000-metre-plus peaks in the Hohe Tauern. The car-free resort with about 3,000 sqm of wellness, bathing and sauna landscape and a kid’s club offers indoor and outdoor pools as well as a solar-heated natural swimming pond that covers 700 sqm.
The buildings should not only be preserved, but be showcased in a design that would breathe new life into their walls. The new design compliments their brutality with elegant interventions and transform their austere functionality into a place of calm, comfort and relaxation. A complimentary palette of concrete, steel, timber and engineered glass ensures that new construction elements tread lightly, leaving the existing buildings relatively untouched and retaining their strong presence.
“The Gradonna****s Mountain Resort stands on a high sunny plateau in an impressive location at 1340 m above sea level in Kals am Großglockner”.
Gradonna****s
Mountain Resort: Sleep well in nature!
If you live in the city, you might often wonder how you can achieve restful sleep when there’s so much “vibrant” noise and activity in the background. You’re tired of the situation and just tired in general. It would be much more beneficial to sleep against the backdrop oft the breathtaking East Tyrolean mountains with the best view of the Großglockner – so off we go to the Gradonna****s Mountain Resort with its hotel and 42 chalets. At 1,350 metres above sea level, you’ll enjoy exceptional views of nature, nourishing moments and find peace – because sleep is the most natural thing in the world.
Unique location
Four-star-superior resort boasts a unique location and a refreshing atmosphere.
Because the Gradonna is car-free, holidaymakers can not only delight in the magnificent panoramic mountain view and the absolute tranquillity that comes with it, they can also take in the abundant fresh, pure mountain air, which will raise the oxygen levels in their blood.
As a result, they won’t just breathe better, they’ll also enjoy a deeper and more restful sleep.
The scent of the forest
You’ll barely have set foot in your room or chalet and you’ll be able to smell the spruce and arolla pine. Wood is a natural material that can improve the air quality even in closed rooms. This in turn has a positive impact on our mood and therefore provides a natural way of achieving better mental health. So on top of everything else, we have the perfect climate for sleep!
The sleep sommeliers
This isn’t a case of recommending the right wine for a nightcap. Instead, it’s about promoting the best possible sleep quality thanks to smart tips. Our in-house "Schlaf-gut©-Sommiliere" have mastered this art perfectly. From suitable pillows to sleep-inducing reading material and music and a sleep first aid kit, they’ve got everything covered to ensure guests have a restful night’s sleep.
An active excursion
What must be one of the best-known methods of achieving restful sleep is being active in nature during the day. With 250 kilometres of via ferrata routes, gentle hiking trails and multi-day tours close by,
there are plenty of options to help you totally switch off and recharge at the same time. There are also countless (electric) bike tours starting at the Gradonna****s Mountain Resort itself. And the lifestyle hotel offers the best environment in which to relax.

LUNZ AM SEE | AUSTRIA
Refugium Lunz
Dive into the lake of naturalness.
The Refugium is located directly on the church square in Lunz am See, the Ybbs and the Gothic parish church from the 15th century to the side. The history of the house with its 23 rooms also goes back 5 centuries.
The owners, Joachim Mayr and Heinz Glatzl, felt obligated to this history when remodeling. They did not want to create just another design hotel, but rather a tender coexistence between old and new, a place of contemplation and refuge, precisely the Refugium.
The vision of a place where the desire for new things and the appreciation of the past find common expression has taken shape with the Refugium. Heart and soul, dedication and the clear aesthetic concept are reflected in the design of the rooms. It is a skillful play with textures, structures, shapes and colors. The commitment to authentic craftsmanship and attention to detail can be seen and felt throughout the hotel.
Numerous partners, from the Formdepot cooperative founded by Joachim and Heinz, were involved in the remodeling and furnishing of the hotel. Formdepot is an association of craftsmen, architects and designers based in Vienna Ottakring.
„For the weary and the energetic. All who like to eat and drink. Who like to see beautiful things and seek adventure. Or rest. Or anything in between.“

Sometimes gatherings need more than just the usual setting. The Refugium Lunz offers a festive and intimate atmosphere that is perfect for creating unforgettable memories. Here, every event becomes a special experience, be it a Christmas party or a business meeting - perfect all round with good food. The Refugium Lunz believes that true culinary art takes time. The philosophy behind this is the use of seasonal ingredients and regional products to bring the highest quality to the plate. Here, bread is made by hand, vegetables are lovingly pickled and meat is delicately marinated. Every meal reflects the inspiration of the moment and is a treat for the palate.
The Refugium's salon kitchen is the perfect place to get together before a meal, get in the mood for a time together with friends and colleagues and enjoy the culinary delights.
Workation in nature
But Refugium Lunz is also the perfect place for those looking for a break in nature. A workation in this idyllic setting is inspiring and allows you to approach tasks with renewed freshness and clarity. Surrounded by untouched nature and fresh mountain air, it is easy to replenish your energy reserves and open up new perspectives.
All in all, the Refugium Lunz is more than just a location; it is a place where experiences are created that people like to remember. The combination of festive atmosphere, exquisite cuisine and inspiring nature makes it a first-class choice for Christmas parties, meetings and workations.

A place to find yourself, to learn, and to enjoy music and art.
Privat happiness close to the stars
The architecture is reminiscent of the Tyrolean “Heustadl” which is typical of alpine farming. The clarity of the architecture is continued in the interior - you won’t find any overloaded alpine chic here. The use of traditional materials is interpreted in a modern way and creates an authentic, contemporary ambience, designed with a lot of respect in dealing with nature and the environment. Especially local materials from Tyrol, such as loden and Tyrolean wood were incorporated into the planning. SEE
Moments of happiness at 1,250 m above sea level are promised by the boutique hotel Bergwiesenglück in the middle of the Tyrolean Alps. How could it be any different. It is a place where the view wanders over the lush green mountain meadows to the rugged peaks of the Silvretta Group and the fresh air clears the mind.
On a sunny place presents the elegant Chalet village, in the center the Bergwiesenhof. The authentic Alpine Suites, the restaurant “Hermann’s kitchen” and the reception are located here. On the roof top you find a 12-meter heated infinity pool and a small fitness cube, with a magnificent view of the surrounding mountain landscape.
“The 12 chalets are a commitment to the region and fit naturally into the alpine environment. Wood meets concrete and stone meets loden.”
Bergwiesenglück: Greener than green
In the heart of the natural paradise that is Paznaun Valley, the sustainable impact of a vacation at Boutique Hotel and Chalet Bergwiesenglück extends far beyond the realms of heart and soul.
Nature itself applauds the conscientious efforts of the proprietors, Anna and Rudolf Schuchter, in their commitment to environmental preservation.
Nestled amid the splendors of Paznaun Valley, Bergwiesenglück bears a certain responsibility, a sentiment passionately embraced by Anna and Rudolf Schuchter as they helm their boutique establishment. "Besides hospitality, environmental conservation holds a significant place in our establishment. Acting in harmony with nature is of great importance to us. Hence, we tread lightly on precious resources," expresses Rudolf Schuchter.
Shopping for guests is predominantly sourced not from supermarkets or wholesalers, but from numerous local producers. Rudolf Schuchter explains, "This approach minimizes waste, supports our long-standing local partners, reduces CO2 emissions due to shorter supply chains, and ensures our guests enjoy the finest quality – what more could one desire?"
A refrigerator brimming with delights
The guests, in turn, warmly welcome these regional delicacies produced with great care. Rudolf Schuchter elaborates, "For instance, our Chalet guests can have their refrigerators stocked with delicacies such as farmhouse bread, bacon, alpine butter, and much more – an offering that is enthusiastically embraced." Additionally, the restaurant features dishes crafted from local ingredients, including game and lamb from their own hunts and breeding. "And let's not forget our herb garden, from which we harvest organicquality ingredients."
Guests consider the crystal-clear mountain spring water, freely flowing from every tap at Bergwiesenglück, a substantial luxury. "Nature provides us with the most precious resources for life and enjoyment, and our drinking water is no exception, boasting spring water quality."
Because less often means more
Guests can actively contribute to conservation efforts during their stay. Rudolf Schuchter advises, "Choosing not to have the room or chalet cleaned daily makes a significant difference. Our guests can opt for cleaning services flexibly, tailored to their individual preferences." As Schuchter emphasizes, "We see ourselves as a small part of a larger whole. If everyone pitches in, we can continue to preserve and protect our magnificent natural surroundings."
SEEFELD | AUSTRIA dasMAX
Nordic minimalism at the best spot
DasMAX is a stylish lifestylehotel in the perfect spot in Seefeld in Tyrol. Located directly at the railway station and only a few minutes’ walk from the centre, the ski area and cross-country skiing trails are within easy reach. The bright rooms radiate Nordic elegance and are furnished in a reduced way with Bo-Concept design classics. Every detail and all the materials used are of the highest quality and the guests notice that quite quickly. The hotel deliberately avoids superfluous „Nice-to haves“ and pompous chic. Contemporary luxury is welcome –but only where it makes sense.
Plenty of possibilities without any obligations. That is how the hosts of dasMAX summarize their philosophy. After an active day you can relax in the wellness area with Finnish sauna and spa. Be sure to enjoy the sensational view of the Seefeld mountains from the rooftop terrace. In the Honesty Bar you shouldn‘t miss the great selection of cocktails, in the dasMAX Bistro you can enjoy your breakfast, an extensive brunch or afternoon snacks.
“The perfect homebase in Seefeld for adventurers, peace seekers or global citizens”.
dasMAX, a glimpse of the future
In the fast-paced world of architecture and hotel operations, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is now opening up a whole host of fascinating opportunities. We spoke to Alexander Meissl from Meissl Architects about it. He explained to us the enduring importance of hospitality and the human factor and the link with the dasMAX.
What are you currently working on?
I’m spending a lot of time in Vienna for work, mostly because of our complex project at the Döbling Private Hospital. We are extending the hospital and incorporating many aspects of a hotel under the motto “Recover like you’re on holiday”. We won an architectural competition and our design is inspired by the Bauhaus style, which is also evident from the outside. In the interior, we blend the functional features of a hospital with design in order to create an atmosphere that’s similar to that of a hotel. Our projects have received sustainability certifications. We’re also working on another eight or nine hotel projects in various locations, including Kitzbühel, Bavaria and Arlberg, plus a new solid timber frame hotel project in the Zillertal valley. And the dasMAX in Seefeld, which we brought to life five years ago and has continued to evolve since then.
Is the application of AI a feature of your projects?
Certainly, but it’s important to clarify what AI means and whether it’s a blessing or a curse when it’s used in the right way. In our industry, AI is a blessing. We’re already using various programs and designing interior spaces with AI. Specialist knowledge is required to use it, but we’re able to generate several design options in a very short time. Having said that, AI isn’t able to take all of the details into consideration, and that’s why ultimately the human factor is still necessary.
So you don’t think AI will replace our work in the future?
Our goal is to make work easier with AI, not to replace it. In the hotel industry, we’re curious to see how AI influences the design of amenities. There will most likely be a specialism for designers and architects who make optimal use of AI. The design of lounge areas in hotels is becoming more diverse to meet the needs of various target groups. What does a bar look like? Is there even a bar? Does it look like the restaurant? I think the whole lounge area will take on a completely different dynamic for guests.
dasMAX is celebrating its fifth anniversary this December. What has happened there over the last five years, is there a new dynamic there too?
dasMAX has now established itself on the Seefeld hotel scene and become a big thing. It may be a small hotel, but it has great significance and has had a positive reception throughout the season. We have really good occupancy rates, far higher than the regional average.
What is the concept for the dasMAX? What were your considerations?
We positioned dasMAX as a budget design hotel by Seefelders for Seefeld. Large chain hotels don’t work in our region, which is why having an alternative for visiting design enthusiasts is extremely welcome. They want to have a nice place from which they can explore the area. That’s how it works and is perceived.
Has it evolved?
A business requires around two or three years to look through everything thoroughly. During this time, little has changed, just some minor maintenance work like painting the walls.
For two years, the hotel has been run by manager Carmen, who does so with such dedication it’s as if it were her own. Carmen brings a unique sense of humanity and femininity to the hotel, something AI could never achieve. Her passion and commitment are tangible and underscore the importance of personalised hospitality and well-being. This comparison between AI and the human factor is especially noticeable in the everyday running of the hotel.
What does a hotel need these days in order to function?
It’s difficult to gauge it in a general way. This year, luxury hotels in particular have faced a lot of challenges. Successful hotels are those that manage to accommodate guests over a period of ten months and offer an entertaining experience regardless of the weather. dasMAX fulfils all of these criteria. No matter what the season or the weather, it’s the ideal place for a relaxing holiday or break.

Nidum Casual Luxury Hotel
Perfect moments on the Seefeld sunny plateau.
High above the rooftops of the Inn Valley in Tyrol sits the NIDUM Casual Luxury Hotel, the perfect place for a generation of travellers hungry for life. Staying here is an absolute pleasure: designer furniture in red wood and accessories in soft natural tones from beige to lime green create a relaxing, cosy ambience. The huge window fronts elegantly leave the stage to the true star – the wonderful nature. Right behind the house lies the forest and thus access to countless cross-country ski trails in all levels of difficulty, the nearest ski resort can be reached in a few minutes by ski bus.
The 57 spacious bedrooms all face the sunny south and combine fresh style with luxury fittings and furnishings. A top-of-the range establishment, but one that puts guests at their ease: this is “casual luxury”, the design hotel’s philosophy. To round off the relaxed atmosphere there is a 1,500 sqm luxury spa facility with an infinity pool, saunas, whirlpool and quiet rooms.
Gourmets and gourmands will love the different restaurant areas – after enjoying an aperitif on the sunny “Apero Terrace”. Luxury meets casual, and elegance meets cosiness - this philosophy extends to the kitchen of the casual luxury hotel, with a perfect symbiosis of traditional and modern culinary specialities.
"Upon the Seefeld Plateau, where the majestic Alps meet the serene valleys, Hotel Nidum stands as a sanctuary of tranquility and comfort."
Hotel Nidum –Bathing amid the green
Immersion takes on a refreshingly natural meaning at NIDUM. In summer, guests at the casual luxury hotel can expect more than just an infinity pool and a hot tub – there’s also a specially designed natural bathing pond, right on the edge of the forest next to the hotel. It’s an oasis for anyone who loves relaxing in nature.
At first, you’ll be rather unsure about where to start: should I set out on a hike through the surrounding forests, meadows and mountains first and then refresh myselfin this natural resource? Or would it be best to descend straight awayinto the rippling waves, where the sun glitters and the fresh green of the forest is reflected? Whatever you feel like doing, the natural bathing pond will fulfil every desirefor slow living, tranquillity and recharging, for consciously finding luxury in the simple things, in its purest form.
Whether you choose to relax and soothe your senses in the water, swim a few morning lengths or treat yourself to an early evening drink under the slowly setting sun, you’ll experience the crystal-clear mountain air – which is also pleasantly and delicately fragranced with the scent of the neighbouring larch trees. Then of course there’s the view of the Inntal valley: uninterrupted, spectacular and uplifting. Considering power lies in tranquillity, everything at NIDUM has a truly invigorating effect on the body and mind. It’s the purest form of enjoyment you can have in and around the water. But that’s not the only place.
If you stroll alongside the new natural bathing pondin beautiful green surroundings, the hideaway hotel emerges, boasting all the features a discerning holidaymaker in search of relaxation could possibly want – not just outside but inside, too. For example in the form of a broad selection of national and international dishes for breakfast, lunch and (gourmet) dinner. And in the rooms and suites, of course. Comfortably furnished and taking inspiration from nature in their purist design, they also provide breathtaking views: of the forests, of the meadows, of the mountains – and obviously of the natural bathing pond. Where all you want to do is simply submerge yourself again and relax.

The spectacular skybar, the only one in the center of Sölden, invites you to magical hours under the sky roof and is also open to visitors in the evening.
On a property area of 6,000 square meters, the house convinces with a lot of spaciousness, a generous garden as well as 44 spacious rooms, including 21 new Signature Apartments. The new house breaks up existing structures and follows an open-house concept.
A magical retreat in the Alps, THE SECRET Sölden
In the legendary winter sports destination of Sölden in the heart of the Ötztal Alps, you’ll find THE SECRET, a mystical and magical resort that opened its doors in March 2022 following extensive renovation and expansion work. For guests who are looking for both a cosmopolitan atmosphere and a retreat in nature, the modern lifestyle hotel is the place to be.
THE SECRET is located at the top end of Sölden, where the sun shines for the whole day and you can sleep at night with the windows open to the calming sounds of the Ötztaler Ache that runs behind the hotel. Anyone who fancies a swim when they get up can do just that in the new outdoor pool, which is open from early morning so guests can submerge themselves indoors and resurface outdoors. Or the other way round.
The location of the resort may be quiet, but it’s also very central – THE SECRET is just 400 metres from the centre of town and 200 metres from the Gaislachkogelbahn cable car valley station, which in winter will get you to guaranteed snow at 3,000 metres in twelve minutes. Up here, where the BIG3 Schwarze Schneid (3,340 m), Tiefenbachgletscher (3,307 m) and Gaislachkogel (3,048 m) tower majestically, it’s like the whole world is at your feet. As are the pistes for the skiers. The three 3,000-metre peaks are accessible via cable car, meaning you can combine all three into one of the longest ski runs in the Alps.
After a long and eventful day in the mountains, the evening is time for dinner at the hotel. And a special one at that. The informal restaurant LA’LIV serves up delicious indulgence from the Alps and beyond, and interprets it with a fusion of French and Alpine influences. Seasonal
produce from the region is harmoniously and boldly combined with the flavours of Provence – resulting in dishes like Charolais beef with local vegetables or Ötztal char with a Chardonnay emulsion. And after that? The best option is to make your way back up, but not up the 3,000-metre giants this time – up to the roof of the hotel. Here, you’ll find the spectacular THE VUE sky bar.
This bar has a partially glazed ceiling that offers a view of the star-studded night sky, state-of-the-art video and sound installations and an extravagant, unique interior, all of which has helped it become a popular venue for occasions like weddings and birthdays. The interior, with floorto-ceiling windows that face the striking mountain landscape, and the large terrace create the ideal setting for such events.
Guests can book the whole resort or just the sky bar for their exclusive use, so THE SECRET team work according to people’s specific ideas and needs to ensure everything runs smoothly. And because no event is complete without the right drinks, THE VUE boasts an international bar menu featuring cocktails, classics and signature drinks created by bar manager Lukas Keppler and his team for their guests using products from local gin and vodka distillers. It’s like a fusion of international and Alpine that’s a perfect fit for the cosmopolitan style of THE SECRET.

Health and contentment are interwoven at this location, a modern luxury among the everyday hurly burly.
Sporting activities will increase your heart rate and feelings of happiness, before the wellness oasis, with its sauna, massage and relaxation area, returns you to a feeling of grounded contentment.
Sometimes, only something special allows one to relax. One finds this special something in the Senses Suite Deluxe View. Hotel August
A former Augustinian monastery as an urban retreat
A former Augustinian monastery is transformed into an urban retreat that embraces the sacred soul of the site while captivating with modernist touches in every little detail. The hotel is located in Het Groen Kwartier (the Green Quarter) a traffic-free area on the site of a large 19th-century former military hospital that once belonged to the Belgian Army.
The neighborhood is very lively with many new stores, restaurants and small cafes. It is close to the Zurenborg neighborhood with its impressive Art Nouveau and fin-de-siècle mansions.
For the reconstruction of the property, consisting of 5 buildings, the well-known Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen could be won. He is one of the leading figures in the Antwerp design scene.
The former monastery houses 44 rooms and suites, no two rooms are alike, each has its own unique charm. If you want to stay extra comfortable we recommend the August Suite. With a personal living room, a large sleeping area and a private bathroom with walk-in shower and large bathtub, it offers every imaginable comfort. Enjoy views of the courtyard, chapel and swimming pond from your private balcony. The room is accessible via a small staircase.
The atmospheric restaurant, located in the corridor surrounding the original chapel, offers creative dishes that follow the rhythm of the seasons. The hotel’s own wellness area invites you to warm up in the sauna and hammam. Cool off with a fresh ice scrub, in the outdoor shower or in the outdoor swimming pond. August also has 4 meeting rooms, a private library and a pavilion in one of the gardens. Perfect places for a business meeting or a private party.
"Architect Vincent Van Duysen's creative vision transformed the hotel into a contemporary sanctuary, with a chic muted palette accentuating its historic architecture."

AUGUST & HOTEL JULIEN, Belgian heritage with timeless appeal
august
Forming a bond is always a special thing –especially when it involves the hospitality of two boutique hotels in Antwerp. Each boasts its own distinctive atmosphere, but august and Hotel Julien also enjoy a certain symbiosis: the combination of historic Belgian architecture with a contemporary, minimalist feel.
Our journey takes us first to Het Groen Kwartier. The “green quarter” is virtually car free and is laid out like a park, surrounded by cool lofts in old buildings, new-build apartments, detached houses and offices, plus shops, cafés and restaurants. Also part of this popular, almost eight-hectare development for work, life and balance, where in the 19th century there was a military hospital, is august. The hotel itself was once an Augustinian monastery and was transformed into a premium hotel a few years ago by top Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen. It is composed of five buildings, two of which are terraced townhouses with gardens, and a former private chapel for nuns, all of which keep time with the traditional architectural rhythm of the city and pay their respects to Belgium’s cultural heritage. The 44 rooms and suites are an homage to the city’s history, while at the same time celebrating the contemporary modernism of our time. Guests at august don’t just have a comfortable stay, sleep in custom-made Egyptian percale bed linen and get a feel for centuries gone by, they also enjoy lots of the other benefits of a luxury boutique hotel – from cuisine in the gourmet restaurant to wellness in the privatespa area.
Julien
Just a few streets away, Hotel Julien offers the same level of luxury and privacy. There are again spacious rooms and suites that, as soon as you walk in, will elicit an appreciative nod at the sight of all the fine details: designer furniture, limited edition photography on the walls, bathrooms with rain showers made out of carrara marble, and even the views of the green internal courtyard are dignified. This special hotel atmosphere is also embedded in Belgian (architectural) history, because Hotel Julien consists of two mansions dating back to the 16th century, both of which have been painstakingly restored. As if you hadn’t noticed already, when you get to the hotel roof terrace, there’ll be no doubting where you are: the old town of Antwerp. Historic guild houses line the edge of the Grote Markt, the Cathedral of Our Lady projects its spire into the sky and of course Rubens has also left his eternal artistic mark. Here in the old town especially, the architectural heritage of Antwerp rubs shoulders with the numerous hotspots for shopping, design, art, culture and fine dining, and if you want, it will also guide you to august. After all, one of the main benefits of the collaboration with Hotel Julien is that you can stay here to enjoy gourmet food, and stay there to enjoy the wellness facilities. You could call it a special bond.

Hotel Lemongarden
Colourful Hideaway with a paradise like garden
The Hotel Lemongarden is located amidst the picturesque fishing village Sutivan on the north-west coast of the island of Brac. The boutique hotel exudes unparalleled charm, not least because of its three almost 300 year-old stone buildings. It was from three protected buildings that a harmonious unit was created in the course of the renovation, where only the best materials from the island were used. Slowing down, relaxation and enjoyment is the hideaway’s motto today. 22 suites, 13 superior rooms and 4 Marina studios overall in timeless design, and the colour concept of the south invites you to feel at ease. The interplay of colours in nature plays an important role inside as well as outside: at the pool you can enjoy the fragrance of the lemon trees and the magnificent colours of the surrounding paradise garden.
Another highlight is the private Lemongarden beach, which is a 10-minute walk away. Situated in a natural bay with an area of 8,000 sqm and surrounded by pine woods, it invites guests to exclusive days on the beach. Authentic, genuine and simply Mediterranean is the kitchen in the hotel’s own restaurant, which invites you to take a break and rest with a view over the harbour.
“Life in full bloom. Residents of Lemongarden have the luxury of enjoying the vibrand private garden which is a world of its own. Majestic palm trees, lemons and lush flowers create a paradise like atmosphere.”

BERLIN | GERMANY
Wilmina Hotel Berlin
From a former women's prison to a tranquil hotel oasis
In the heart of Charlottenburg, the Wilmina stands as an extraordinary hotel with a rich history. Originally a courthouse and women's prison, the protected architectural ensemble was transformed by architect duo Grüntuch Ernst into a welcoming space. They initiated and manage the project.
The classical façade along Berlin's Kantstraße hides a hidden idyll – a newly designed hotel offering 44 unique rooms and suites, a restaurant, and a multidisciplinary art and culture space amidst red brick buildings and lush courtyards.
Built in 1896, the structures served as a courthouse and prison until 1985. After a decade-long sustainable transformation by Grüntuch Ernst Architects, the result is a contemplative refuge blending historical and contemporary elements, featuring bright rooms with diverse layouts and unique touches.
Guests can enjoy stylish rooms, enchanting garden views, and amenities like a library, fireplace lounge, spa, sauna, and gym. The Lovis restaurant, adorned with artistic lights, and the Amtsalon hosting art and design projects, offer a unique urban escape. An open history book and a retreat for relaxation and exploration.
"A place of calm and soft tones in the pulsating metropolis Berlin."
Liberated at Wilmina Hotel
The Wilmina hotel and the neighbouring Lovis and Amtsalon buildings are located in Berlin, and it couldn’t be a more appropriate setting. After all, the city is in constant dialogue with its challenging past. And this is where the former women’s prison with its adjoining court building come in. The heritage listed group of buildings from the 19th century stood empty for a long time until Berlin-based firm Grüntuch Ernst Architects decided to buy it and transform it. The scars from days gone by haven’t simply been erased here – instead they have been sensitively preserved.
The issue of light was a critical factor here. The small lattice windows were extended downwards and the stanchions retained in the upper section. The extended openings in the walls now provide a better view. There is a lot of white and beige and light-coloured wood, while many Bocci pendant lights help to add a sense of tranquillity to the setting.
The courthouse on the road side was converted into Amtsalon, an inviting venue for art and culture that also serves as eventspace for selcted guests. What was once the prison yard now has a roof, under which you will find the new restaurant Lovis. And the internal courtyard as well as the roof areas have been planted with ivy, vines, rice-paper plants and rough horsetail because, as we all know, there’s something incredibly peaceful about nature. Utilising the architecture, it has been possible to turn a gloomy and awkward group of buildings into a light and tranquil location that can finally leave the past behind and look confidently towards the future.

AMALIADA | GREECE
Dexamenes Seaside Hotel
Rough luxe experience in converted concrete wine tanks
Dexamenes Seaside Hotel is located on one of the most unspoilt coastlines of the Western Peloponnese, on Kourouta Beach. The former winery, located directly on the sea front, consists of wine tanks, which have been minimally restored to retain their original industrial appearance, and are laid out in two parallel rows of concrete blocks with an extension in steel frame construction. The renowned Athens architecture firm k-studio was commissioned to redesign the former wine factory. From the outset it was clear that the strong history and raw beauty of the existing buildings should not only be preserved, but be showcased in a design that would breathe new life into their walls.
34 industrial chic suites in converted former wine tanks dating back to the 1920s are available for design-loving guests to enjoy an exceptional stay from April to October. Many of them have a wide covered terrace overlooking the Ionian Sea. The patina of exposed interior concrete walls contrasts with engineered glass partitions and polished terrazzo floors while elements of timber add dashes of warmth in a nod to the area’s nautical history. Dexamenes is an architectural slice of Greek trading history on the mainland’s western Peloponnese coast.
In addition to its architectural roots, the luxury resort also focuses on regional culture and local experiences. Considering that the Peloponnese peninsula has more vineyards and grape varieties than any other region in Greece, it is not surprising that local specialities and viticulture play an essential role at Dexamenes Seaside Hotel. The kitchen prepares a variety of choices from breakfast to dinner that vary from degustation menus to hyperlocal meals with traditional references, putting in high priority the dietary preferences of each guest. Guest can indulge in Greek cuisine at the taverna or enjoy a drink at the beachfront bar-lounge. The boutique “Bakaliko” with local products and delicacies also embodies the regional culture of Greece.
Peace and relaxation can be found in an ex wine Silo Tank converted into a contemporary sanctuary where therapies such as yoga, sound healing and massage treatments take place.

Hotel Eremito
The Quintessence of Happiness
Experience a relaxing getaway at a simply designed retreat, away from the distractions of everyday life. Immerse yourself in the special spiritual atmosphere of a monastery in Umbria and enjoy the seclusion from the world. The natural surroundings and the silence help you to connect with your innermost self.
The History of Eremito
Eremito embodies the essence of a bygone era, when hermitages were places of contemplation and spiritual growth. The restoration of this tradition allows visitors to find the key to inner peace in the tranquility and seclusion of this place. The Umbrian valleys surrounding it enhance the feeling of spirituality, enchanting both the eyes and the soul.
Founder Marcello Murzilli on Eremito Marcello Murzilli describes the creation of Eremito as the result of his deep emotions and four years of intense work. The hermitage from the early 14th century has been restored to its original splendor, providing space for the regeneration of mind and body, and a reconnection with life's priorities that are often lost in the chaos of everyday life.
The "Celluzze" Cells: Ancient Luxury, Minimalist Interpretation
The rooms at Eremito, known as "Celluzze," pay homage to the ancient tradition of hermitages, offering a space for reflection and prayer amid a hectic world.
The "Celluzze" are inspired by the ancient monk cells, providing space for reflection and prayer. Equipped with a French bed and a small bathroom with a shower, they allow for a return to the simple joys of life.
Thanks to modern insulation, the room temperature remains pleasant without the need for air conditioning. An ancient underfloor heating system, operated by a central wood stove, provides cozy warmth.
The attention to detail is also evident in the choice of materials: bed linen made of spun hemp, hand-embroidered for an authentic feel. While modern amenities are present, such as comfortable seating and a stone desk by the window, deliberately absent are telephones, televisions, and Wi-Fi. Instead, guests can enjoy the inspiring view of the surrounding landscape and the green valley.
Refectory: A Place of Enjoyment and Tradition
In the vegetable garden of the Eremito estate, various types of organic vegetables and herbs thrive, forming the basis for delicious dishes. All ingredients are carefully selected and come from the immediate surroundings to guarantee the highest quality.
Dinners are enjoyed in an atmosphere of silence, sharpening the senses and promoting the conscious enjoyment of meals.
The house is characterized by exclusive simplicity, which is also reflected in its gastronomic philosophy. Orienting itself towards ancient recipes and simple dishes from the Mediterranean monastic tradition.
The cuisine of Eremito offers vegetarian and vegan dishes served daily in a fixed menu. The dishes are based on fresh, seasonal ingredients to capture the authentic taste of the Umbrian region.
In winter, all meals are served in the spacious dining room in front of an imposing stone fireplace. In the warmer months, guests enjoy their meals in the shade of the pergola, surrounded by the untouched nature of the nature reserve.
Relaxation: The Quintessence of Happiness
In the SPA of Eremito, mind and body come together to experience true bliss. In an environment permeated by ancient Gregorian chants, you discover inner balance in the exclusive simplicity of a space dedicated to relaxation and well-being.
The relaxation area next to the yoga room is nestled in the rocks, offering an extremely suggestive atmosphere. Here, you can detach yourself from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and indulge in two steam baths with stone walls and seating, as well as a whirlpool with color therapy and massage.
While enjoying natural teas and the homemade "Melemito," a sweet and warm infusion, you can fully dedicate every moment to your well-being.
"Where simplicity meets serenity, and ancient traditions embrace modern tranquility amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Parrano"
RIMINI | ITALY i SUITE
All-suite design hotel in Rimini by the sea
The first all-suite design hotel on the Rimini Riviera is right at the heart of the action, directly on Rimini’s beach promenade. Guests are welcomed into a spacious lobby that is dominated by brilliant whites and features a cosy fireplace. The bar is surrounded by mirrored walls while bright green artificial trees are scattered throughout the room. The 52 suites are up to 70 sqm large, so guests enjoy the comfort of an apartment and service of a hotel at the same time.
The hotel’s own i-FAME restaurant, where the chef Daniele Succi also likes to create futuristic dishes using regional products, promises unforgettable culinary highlights. The challenge in doing so is the hotel’s ”zero food miles” concept: the food may only have covered a few kilometres from the producer’s to the guest at the restaurant to keep the ecological footprint as small as possible.
The i-FEEL Good spa also leaves nothing to be desired: on the top floor of the hotel it’s not just the heated infinity pool that offers a magical view over the sea but also two saunas, a Turkish bath, a Thalassotherapy pool, sensory showers, an ice room and a relaxation area with fireplace.
Zash Country Boutique Hotel & Spa
Design hotel in an acient palmento on a vulcanic island
Zash is a boutique hotel where guests rediscover a time where they live in another dimension, made of slow gestures, new visions and mysterious voices: zash, splash, cucù, crag, ciuf, druum, pluf - the instinctive and hidden sounds of nature. To be surrounded by the volcano stones and scents of orange blossom, then all is quiet. It is the pleasure of life.
The aim of the design concept of the architects Antonio Iraci and Carla Maugeri was that elegant historical fragments meet the contemporary. The 16 rooms which include 7 suites, bring out the physicality of nature respecting the traces of the past. The majesty of Mount Etna and the transparency of the sea are the two strong contrasts that join together in the micro territories of this splendid side of Sicily.
This concept is carried through to the culinary experiences of the hotel. The Zash Restaurant is located where time has stopped: a special cozy intimate space. Where wine was fermenting in the old days, guests can experience the slow dimension
of tastes, space and times. The Chef Giuseppe Raciti and his team mix creativity, tradition and territory to create the one star Michelin cuisine.
Inside the Nature at Zash there is the Zash’s nature: a retreat for contemporary wellbeing. Experience the outdoor pool with Etna view or the silent lemon garden. The pool is made of Etna lava stone, strong and powerful. Bare feet touch the water and feel the wood, while the warmth of intimate spaces meets the local aromas. At the Zash’s Spa area guests can immerse themselves in the nature with a yoga class at the orange garden or have a massage, nothing is left to chance.
In this intimate and private retreat, the combination of Mediterranean and volcanic influences will make the relaxing experience unique.
"At Zash Country Boutique Hotel & Spa tranquility dances with elegance, and every corner whispers the timeless charm of Sicilian hospitality."
“Historical fragments meet contemporary taste to bring out the physicality of nature respecting the traces of the past”.
OLM Nature Escape An escapist stay in a fairytale landscape
Nestled in South Tyrol's Tauferer Ahrntal, an Eco Aparthotel, blends future and tradition. Fully energy selfsufficient, CO2-neutral, and authentically regional, it opens in December 2023. Owner Christian Lechner sees sustainability as a mission, making OLM the first vacation resort in South Tyrol entirely self-sufficient in energy. The 33 accommodation units, crafted from warm solid wood, offer a modern alpine ambiance. The Aparthotel features a 60-meter diameter relaxation garden with a natural pond and a 25-meter sports pool, heated year-round.
Or, they can be inspired by the culinary calendar of the OLM kitchen with its seasonal South Tyrolean-Mediterranean specialties, which they receive approximately two weeks before their arrival, to enjoy delightful evenings according to their individual preferences during their stay. In addition, Berni Aichner occasionally invites guests to a culinary themed evening featuring a creative tasting menu. The motto of the wine list is "Best of South Tyrol" with a fine touch of Italy, France, Germany, and Austria. The wine list is also excellently curated and exclusively includes natural wines.
The Tauferer Ahrntal, a quiet side valley of the Pustertal, offers over 80 three-thousand-meter peaks for hiking and (e)biking. Winter activities include snowshoeing and crosscountry skiing in the flatter valley or at higher altitudes. The Skiworld Ahrntal and Kronplatz near Bruneck provide diverse winter sports opportunities.
"Minimalist chalet style in an ultra-smart architecture concept embedded by serene nature."
Exquisite enjoyment at OLM Nature Escape
OLM Nature Escape will open its doors in December 2023. The eco aparthotel isn’t just an architectural eye-catcher, the kitchen also offers a truly special culinary concept. We invited Berni Aichner (Head of Cuisine) and Theodor Falser (Michelin-star chef) to join us at the table so we could find out more about the ideas behind PRENN°.
Berni Aichner – Head of cuisine
Berni, could you please tell us about the PRENN° concept for OLM Nature Escape?
The new culinary concept for OLM Nature Escape is vastly different to the concept employed in conventional hotels. There is no half or three-quarter board. Instead, we offer our guests a wide range of culinary options so they can individually tailor their holiday when it comes to food. We place particular emphasis on providing a healthy, regional breakfast with a high proportion of organic produce.
What makes this concept so special?
Guests at OLM have the opportunity to benefit from the gastronomic offering at PRENN°. Five evenings a week, they can book an APÉRO dinner in a relaxing setting and choose from a selection of tapas that fuse Alpine and Mediterranean influences. Two evenings a week, it’s possible to book the OLM dinner with a four-course menu that changes theme and is extremely varied. What’s more, the kitchens in the apart-suites offer the option of preparing your own meals. Guests receive a specially developed recipe booklet when they check in and can purchase almost all of the ingredients in the OLM shop. If you would rather visit a restaurant in the local area, we can recommend good South Tyrolean pubs, mountain restaurants, pizzerias, wine bars and premium award-winning restaurants.
Can you tell us about the name?
The name PRENN° stems from the original farmstead, Prennhof. Because the kitchen was always a central meeting place at farms, the intention is that the open front cooking area at OLM Nature Escape should also be a place where guests meet. The ° symbol in the name represents the circle that’s used as the architectural trademark of OLM Nature Escape. PRENN° is a meeting place, characterised by hospitality, conviviality and cuisine. We have a passion for enjoyment, in a sense.
Berni and Theodor, how did the partnership come about?
The partnership is a result of a recommendation from Thomas Steiner, the ideas man behind OLM Nature Escape and a friend of mine. We developed the culinary concept together with award-winning chef Theodor Falser. We clicked straight away because of our passion for cooking and love of high-quality produce. It also turns out that we’re the same age, so deciding to work together was incredibly easy.
How was it for the two of you to create the breakfast offering and the APÉRO dinner as the head of cuisine at PRENN° and a Michelin-star chef?
It was an exciting task. We had a basic concept to work from, which was shaped by Theodor’s many years of experience.
It was and is fun to implement new ideas and balance the traditional and the modern. The main focus is always that the produce is of high quality. Theodor is a global player and I have strong roots in the Tauferer Ahrntal, so we complement each other brilliantly. We place great emphasis on ensuring every product has a story and providing high-quality, healthy options.
OLM Nature Escape is a little different to the norm and you should be able to sense that in every bite.
Berni, in addition to the APÉRO dinner, there is also the OLM dinner every Tuesday and Friday, developed in-house and with a varying theme. Which themes can guests look forward to and how do you design these menus?
The OLM dinner is offered with different themes that are shaped by local traditions, regional produce from short supply chains and Mediterranean influences. We always incorporate organic produce in our menus, too. Every OLM dinner comprises an OLM greeting plus four other courses, each of which corresponds with the chosen theme. Without being able to go into more detail here, our menus are presented with topics like “Forest”, “DANN South Tyrol” and “Mountain & Mediterranean”. We also offer a vegetarian option and, on request, can prepare an attractive vegan option.
SAN MARTINO IN PASSIRIA | ITALY
Apfelhotel Torgglerhof
Refreshingly different
The Apfelhotel Torgglerhof is a delightful and traditional hotel located in San Martino in Passiria valley. It is surrounded by the beautiful Alpine landscape of the region and offers its guests a peaceful and laid-back setting.
The hotel has been run by the Torggler family for several generations and provides guests from around the world with an unforgettable experience. No matter whether you want to unwind while immersed in picturesque nature or discover the culture and traditions of the location, here you’ll find everything your heart could possibly desire. The Apfelhotel Torgglerhof is an oasis of tranquillity and relaxation, where well-being resides amid tradition and innovation.
“Apfelhotel’s young new generation of owners are breaking new ground while staying true to their traditional roots.”
“In every corner of the hotel, a unique atmosphere is created by meticulous attention to detail in design.”
Apfelhotel Torgglerhof: Embracing Tradition and Innovation
In South Tyrol's Saltaus, the young owners of Apfelhotel are revitalizing tradition with innovative design by noa*. Rooted in the region's rich apple culture, the hotel offers a sensory oasis amidst breathtaking scenery.
Since its inception, Apfelhotel has become a sought-after destination, blending historical charm with modern amenities. In 2014, noa* began expanding the hotel, preserving its rustic essence while introducing new features like the Apfelsauna.
The recent addition of 18 suites in 2020 seamlessly integrates with the landscape, maintaining the farmhouse's character while offering guests a luxurious retreat. Central to this expansion is a wellness area designed to resemble a lush garden, symbolizing the hotel's commitment to harmony with nature.
Overflowing Love of Life
The newly opened wellness facility, the hotel's centerpiece, seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings. The entrance features a curved semi-exposed concrete shell and a stunning portal made from old wood, blending into the landscape. The Southside boasts a glass and steel facade disappearing under rooftop greenery. The spa, known as Brunnenhaus, is hidden beneath earth and plants, merging with the hillside. It features a central natural-stone fountain, an open fireplace, and an indoor-outdoor pool framed with Lucerne metamorphic gneiss rock, creating an infinity-edge effect connecting with the landscape.
The Garden of Eve
The upper floor, exclusively for adults, features a sauna lounge, relaxation room, Finnish sauna, and steam bath, along with an adjacent terrace for outdoor showers. The Finnish sauna offers scenic views with curved wooden slats and glazed windows, while the steam bath has a cave-like feel with droplets collected in a clay pot. The relaxation room provides a spectacular valley view through its green facade cladding. Accessible via a curved staircase, the Apfelsauna in the garden is surrounded by an exposed concrete shell.
Flowering Places
On the hotel's East-facing side, three independent buildings house 18 guest rooms across three floors. Saddle roofs and a dark outer shell pay homage to traditional barn houses, while a wooden rhombus pattern adds modern flair. The ground-floor suites blend with the terrain, featuring living areas opening onto front terraces with swinging hammocks. Natural materials like wood cladding and coarse fibers evoke the region's charm, while outdoor linen curtains separate airy terraces.
Everything but Ordinary
On the ground and first floors, there are four spacious guest rooms and two suites with separate sleeping areas for children. Large windows offer panoramic views, creating a homey atmosphere. Attic gables serve as sleeping galleries, accessible via internal staircases. Each room boasts meticulous design details, enhancing its unique charm.
Continuation of History
The main building, beyond the old barn and majestic weeping willow, houses a restaurant popular among guests. Expanded with pavilions extending into the garden, the design features varying height "cubes" and a modern winter garden theme. Old-styled cupboards and permeable shelves create a cozy atmosphere. Sextantio Albergo Diffuso
Culturally historical project that evokes the spirit of ancient rural life
Sextantio Albergo Diffuso is a fortified medieval village in the mountains of Abruzzo in the National Park Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga. The hotel breathes life back into the historic castle village. With the help of the Museum “Genti d’Abruzzo” over 10 years has been tried to remain faithful to the ancient traditions and customs and to give the hotel as best as possible the original identity stamp of a medieval village. Travel through time, into another world and let yourself be enchanted.
The interior design of the rooms is inspired by pictures taken by the Swiss guide Paul Scheuermeier in Abruzzo in the 1920s. In order to preserve the unity of the aesthetic-affective interior design and avoid the excessive use of contemporary elements, native objects, as well as ancient and traditional local materials are used. The search for the archaic soul of these spaces has led to the preservation of the small windows, the subdued light, the uneven floors. Handmade soaps from olive oil and other products made strictly according to traditional methods are part of the thoughtful decoration of the rooms.
The restaurant “Locanda sotto gli Archi” is dominated by two large stone ceiling arches and a central fireplace. All furniture is primitive, minimal and antique dark wooden furniture. The museum dedicated to the people of Abruzzo was the inspiration for the handcrafted plates and mugs used for all meals and drinks. All food is based on what would have been available and eaten back then. Local ingredients like native, locally grown crops are prepared into traditional dishes according to the original recipes.
"All food is based on what would have been available and eaten back then. We use native, locally grown crops and recreate original recipes."

BACALAR | MEXICO Boca de Agua A poetic habitat at the Laguna de Bacalar
The fact that the small town of Bacalar, located on the Yucatán Peninsula, bears the title of "Pueblo Mágico" sounds promising. After all, Mexico's Secretariat for Tourism explicitly awards this distinction to towns that shine with their typical and well-kept character. However, Bacalar's surroundings with their tropical vegetation and the beautiful Laguna de los Siete Colores (Lagoon of the Seven Colors) are also considered "magical.
Designed by renowned Mexican architect Frida Escobedo and hidden in dense greenery, the Boca de Agua fascinates not only with its unusual architecture. That a place was to be created here that would contribute to ecological, social and cultural regeneration and offer visitors an equally regenerative, unique experience is palpable just by looking at it: the 26 accommodations are in tree houses resting on pillars. And what gives guests the extra feeling of virtually floating in the treetops also serves to protect nature. This leaves the ground undeveloped, which in turn reduces the environmental impact.
"Escape the ordinary with spacious and carefully crafted treehouses with all-out attention to detail."
Boca de Agua, Bacalar, Mexico: A new story unfolds
Imagine a place where the very essence of nature dances in harmony with the pursuit of serenity and well-being. This enchanting tale unfolds on the Yucatán Peninsula, where lush jungles and azure waters converge in a ballet of life and tranquility. Here, amid the lush beauty, Boca de Agua emerges, a symphony of eco-preservation and hospitality that’s been years in the making.
Renowned architecture meets sustainability
Designed by visionary architect Frida Escobedo, renowned for her transformative work at the MET in New York, this ethereal project isn’t just a hotel – it’s a testament to a profound desire. A desire to breathe new life into the environment, the community and the culture, all while offering guests an experience that’s equally restorative and unique. It’s a haven designed by one of the world’s great architects. In this extraordinary narrative, treehouses become the protagonists, rising on pillars to gracefully avoid the Earth’s touch, minimising their footprint on the land.
These exquisite spaces beckon to guests to embrace the untamed jungle that surrounds them, allowing the flora and fauna to weave their tales into the visitor’s own. With 26 accommodation units adorned in warm wood, bathed in natural light and featuring with soft, earthy tones, Boca de Agua seamlessly integrates with the enchanting heart of Bacalar. Its very structure, designed to evolve gracefully over time, becomes an integral part of the landscape’s ongoing story. Raised off the ground on pillars, the construction leaves over 90% of the land untouched, honouring its commitment to nature. The Chicozapote wood used in the project comes from a sustainable source, certified
by the Forest Stewardship Council, thereby ensuring the preservation of the local ecosystem. And with a wastewater treatment plant, every drop finds purpose without harming the lagoon.
Inspiration all around
The embodiment of harmonious regeneration, this project isn’t just about providing a luxurious escape; it’s a commitment to creating a ripple of positive change. Social inclusion, local economic prosperity and the preservation of nature blend with environmental responsibility. Boca de Agua isn’t merely a place to stay; it’s an immersive experience designed to inspire and nurture. In the shared spaces, echoes of the local culture reverberate, each area reflecting the soul of the Yucatán region with stone temples and wooden houses.
Every piece of furniture, designed by local artisans and an in-house team, tells a tale of renewal, forged from materials discarded from nearby industrial processes. Artistry is woven into every nook and cranny, with exclusive creations from Mexican and local brands. Boca de Agua also opens its arms to the community, partnering with NGOs, local universities and government organisations. This sanctuary is now home to a rehabilitated mangrove ecosystem, the first of its kind in Bacalar, thanks to collaboration with the nonprofit organisation Mono Araña, which is devoted to the protection of spider monkeys and their habitat.
Mindfulness at its best
But the story doesn’t end with the design. It’s an invitation to rediscover your connection to the Earth. Scientifically backed therapeutic programmes entwine guests with the natural world, guiding them to reveal the Earth’s healing and rejuvenating secrets. It’s a dopamine reset, a quest for healthier and more sustainable sources of contentment, found in the blissful detachment that Boca de Agua provides. Ancient rituals, harmonised with modern scientific wisdom, enhance the narrative of Boca de Agua’s guests.
And as the tale unfurls, it’s important to remember that it’s not just about the sumptuous accommodation, the immersive experiences or the delectable cuisine. It’s about the heart of Bacalar, the Yucatán and the Earth itself. It’s about creating a story where conservation and luxury coexist in perfect harmony.

La Valise San Miguel
Boutique hospitality in the city of art and culture
After careful restoration, the classic structure of the house blends seamlessly with the local architecture and complements the beauty of the surroundings.
The heart of La Valise is the oasis in the courtyard. Here, time ceases to exist. The gently swaying lemon trees, the murmur of the water and the sun’s incoming rays make space and time melt away. A double Chichimeca staircase forms the center of the garden and frames the ancient cultural omens. The aesthetics of the architecture and the staged design elements create a serene, almost mystical athmosphere.
The rooms and suites highlight the uniqueness of Mexican craftsmanship and Aztec symbolism. Contrasted with modern design elements, an ensemble is created that combines the past and the present.
The original building, which now houses La Valise San Miguel, belonged to a friend of the Mexican-Italian artist Pedro Friedberg who gave the property a very special touch with his art. The artworks were more or less the essence of the house. This was also the reason why they were included in the overall concept during the conversion to the Hotel San Miguel and can still be seen there.
Guests can enjoy their breakfast either in the suite, in the courtyard or another cozy niche in the hotel. Ingredients for the delicious smoothies or local pastry specialties all come from the region. La Valise doesn’t have a restaurant, but it does offer a range of breakfast options, appetizers, wines, and cocktails to round out your culinary stay.
Spa treatments are performed right in your suite. The experienced therapists offer a range of massages, facials and rituals for body, mind and soul.
“When the best of Mexican design history is combined with modern luxury, the result is pure, natural bliss in the artful city of San Miguel de Allende.”

Torel Palace Lisbon
A royal place full of magic
The charming and romantic palaces will steal your heart. Be Queen or King for a day in the historic Torel Palace boutique unit. With their luscious gardens and a stunning view over the city of Lisbon guests can experience the city of Lisbon in the way of royals.
Torel Palace Lisbon is one of the latest wonders of Lisbon’s seven hills. Consisting of two mansions built in 1902 and 1904, it combines different histories in one. The main building was a private residence, while the other was the Bishop of Lisbon’s former guesthouse. In 2019, these two buildings were joined by a modern apartment building. The outer courtyards decorated with a flower garden make the colors of the buildings stand out. The overall renovation respected the characteristics of the architecture and kept the details of the old rooms, stairs, floors and gardens. Isabel Sá Nogueira, the designer of the Torel Palace in Lisbon, invited to give the interior areas of the unit a new set of clothes. The objective was to create spaces that were unforgettable, functional and comfortable and that create a unique and inimitable atmosphere. An atmosphere that could reflect the past while creating new memories for those who experience them.
This set of historic mansions needed an appropriate theme, and with the Portuguese Kings and Queens, it was quickly found.
The décor of the 39 rooms and apartments is a mix of past and present, creating an atmosphere full of charm and personality. The rooms remind of the comfort of home, but with an elegant atmosphere that together with simplicity of the details underlines traditional Portuguese style, united with modern and contemporary touches.
All rooms are designed individually. The unit wanted to create a warm and sophisticated atmosphere while mixing modern amenities with the history of Portugal. At the private gardens or from the pools, guests have a breathtaking view over the city. Honoring the royals of Portugal, the unit gave the name of the Portuguese Kings and Queens to all of the rooms. In the pink building, each room is named after Queens, the name of the Portuguese Kings were given to the rooms of the blue building and the rooms in the white building were named after houses of the monarchy.
In 2023, Torel Palace Lisbon was extended with another stunning palace with a view tower; a heated outdoor pool; a Spa and two restaurants: Black Pavilion with a focus on Comfort food, and the fine dining experience 2Monkeys. In February 2024, only 10 months after its opening, 2Monkeys was awarded 1 MICHELIN-Star.
"Torel Palace Lisbon is the proof of how brilliant Portuguese design is right now. An eclectic mix of a modern take of the rich design history of Lisbon."
Torel
Avantgarde
Celebrating Portuguese art, design & crafts
The award-winning hotel Torel Avantgarde is Porto´s sexiest five-star hotel. It’s a place for the traveler who seeks the extravagant and the extraordinary art of Portugal. The building’s origins date back to the 1940s when “creativity” in its broadest sense was the watchword. Art at the time was no longer seen merely as a complement but as the focus. The break with what came before and the championing of anti-traditional art forms and new frontiers of experimentalism inspired the artists of this generation and marked an era of artistic excellence. Inspired by this era, the Torel Avantgarde welcomes you with its museum-like experience in complete harmony with the comfort and detail characteristic of the Torel Boutiques. The aim behind the approach was not just to emphasize the country’s virtues, but also to challenge guests’ senses – they are invited to live, sense and experience art.
Also the design of the hotel’s interiors was inspired by the Avantgarde years. It was planned by Isabel Sá Nogueira, who was responsible for designing the common areas and some of the rooms. Most of the rooms & suites were styled by Paula Vasconcellos and Francisca Navio from Nano Design.
All of the 60 rooms and suites of the hotel are designed individually. In addition, all of the rooms got a specific name after famous Avantgarde artists, for instance from the fields of design, literature or architecture. The design of each room reflects the personality and vision of the artists the room is named.
At Torel Avantgarde guests can find the Calla Wellness & Spa with treatment rooms for facial and body beauty and relaxation treatments, one gym fully equipped a turkish bath, sauna and two sensory showers. Tenro by Digby is the hotel’s restaurant where meat is the main protagonist at the menu. It features products from native Portuguese breeds that are prepared in a special manner. What sets Tenro apart from a steakhouse is the cuts of meat and the pieces used. Tenro by Digby is a restaurant born from the passion to celebrate the traditions of Portuguese cuisine, while adding a new twist.

Torel Palace Porto Home for writers and poets
A five-star poets palace, a writers shelter, a travelers favorite story housed in a stunning historic mansion: The five star hotel Torel Palace Porto. The hotel was opened in 2020 and is the exclusive address for travelers seeking an elegant, exclusive and unique experience in the heart of Porto with a historic touch and a modern interpretation. The hotel is a completely renovated townhouse from Porto. The original Palacete Campos Navarro was built in 1861 and is one of the most impressive and distinguished examples of the romantic architecture in Porto. During the renovation, the hotel tried to keep the details, features and the history of the stunning old house. The greatest highlight of the architecture is the amazing skylight called Claraboia.
The portraits on the ornate ceilings in the rooms on the first floor set the tone for the hotel’s concept: literature. This is how the hotel and its 24 individually designed rooms and suites, pay homage to famous Portuguese men and women of literature.
The Calla Wellness Suite offers guests a Menu with body and facial beauty and relaxation treatments. The fine-dining restaurant “Blind” by Chef Vitor Matos is a tribute to writer José Saramago’s "Blindness" and offers a secret tasting menu of 10 or 12 moments, with optional wine pairing. Its culinary proposition is deeply rooted in the chef’s memories and Portuguese ingredients with a strong international connection, an expertise that values technical excellence, seasonality, and the origin of the produce. In February 2024, “Blind” was recognized by the
MICHELIN Guide as “Recommended restaurant”, and Chef Rita Magro received the “Young Chef Award”. The new Patisserie “Florbela” in the hotel´s library offers French pastries.
All over the hotel, literature and books from famous authors can be found. From the common areas, at the rooms, to the reception and the restaurant. Especially old ones, can be found on side tables, in niches and most visibly on the library ceiling - an installation where the books appear like stars. In addition, every room at the Torel Palace Porto which was designed by Isabel Sá Nogueira was named after a Portugese writer or poet.
The two Royal Suites “Fernando Pessoa“ and “Eça de Queiroz“ with their rich ornamental stucco ceilings and handcrafted doors give with almost 60 m2 enough space for the traveler who likes to enjoy the privacy and beauty of his room. The modern bathrooms placed in the middle of the room with mirrors reflecting the environment add a spectacular and unusual design touch to the experience.
"Stepping into the Hotel is akin to entering a masterpiece, where every detail is meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of awe and admiration. From the grandeur of its historic architecture to the subtle intricacies of its contemporary design elements."
Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments A luxury stay in the heart of Porto
The award-winning Torel 1884 Suites & Apartments in the heart of Porto is dedicated to explorers who seek more than just a room key. Torel 1884 offers 12 rooms and suites at the main building. To make it the best stay in Porto possible guests can enjoy self service drinks at the honesty bar on the top floor, as well as experience the Portuguese culinary in the “Bartolomeu Bistro & Wine”. A very intimate and elegant space, where typical Portuguese specialties are served.
The boutique hotel has an interesting history, as the stunning building was built in 1884. The palace’s grandeur – with its magnificent windows, spacious rooms, high ceilings, elegant staircase
and fabulous crowning skylight – demanded a superlative theme. The one chosen was that of the cultural diversity of the faraway lands. The concept is inspired by the exotic discoveries which Portugal’s mariners made along the sea and trading routes they followed. Many of the materials and products found in these distant lands, including pepper, porcelain, coffee and silk, continue to be a part of the Portuguese lives and culture today.
The architectural project was the work of Miguel Nogueira, a Portuguese architect. The interiors were conceived by Nano Design and features the work of the artists Jorge Curval and João Pedro Rodrigues. The remit was to enhance the architectural beauty of the building, with the theme of the cultural diversity of the voyages of discovery eviden throughout. Close attention has been given to every detail, with bespoke wooden fittings, the showcasing of the traditional art of handmade tassels, and a decorative finishing which gives each room a personalized touch, while using Portuguese suppliers and artisans whenever possible.
Santa Bárbara
Eco Beach Resort
Natural coastal landscape meets modern luxury
Overlooking the grand beach of Santa Barbara, Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach Resort, the Azores’ first ecologically-friendly eco beach resort was opened in 2015. It began with a passion for the natural black beaches along the picturesque northern coast of São Miguel in the Azores. The unique, almost magical, green pastures and mountain hues that contrast with the azure blue oceans are the ideal backdrop for a calming resort retreat. The inviting natural coastal landscape, the elegance of the modern luxury spaces and the commitment to a full-range of experien es epitomizes the passion for the art of hospitality, nature and, above all, the Azores.
The resort is dedicated to sustainability: The architecture and luxury amenities, the Farm-to-Table supply chain, environmental support and energy/water efficiency programs were constituted to reduce the ecological impact, maintain the natural beauty and environmental balance of the coastal ecosystem.
The architectural design and the choice of materials were selected to blend harmoniously with natural surroundings. The minimalist architecture was adjusted to the morphology of the land, in order to minimize its impact on the natural landscape. This was enhanced by the use of natural building materials sourced locally or nationally, such as the islands’ cryptomeria, exotic bamboos and domestic cork that built on the simple natural setting.
Construction of the Santa Bárbara resort prioritized the use of natural materials, primarily the use of local wood (cryptomeria), cork and bamboo, and infused decorative elements that callback to traditional Azorean motifs and accents. Santa Bárbara’s furniture was designed and built exclusively for the resort. Other decorations were made from repurposed materials, such as lamps which were made from oil containers of an abandoned farm, and the restaurant chairs and tables which were made from reused iron and covered with vegetable fiber, using matting crafts.

Es Racó D’Artà A destination where you can reconnect with yourself through the Mallorcan way of life
On the edge of the National Park of the Llevant Peninsula near the town of Artà in northeast Mallorca, the proprietors; Jaime Danus, a well-known constructor and Toni Esteva, a famous architect, have created a wellness hotel in a class of its own - Es Racó D’Artà. A retreat full of color and texture, unique smells and tastes, sounds of nature, elegant art and minimalist architecture.
In addition to classic Mallorcan life, Es Racó D’Artà offers a variety of workshops from culinary, agriculture, handicrafts, meditation and yoga. Alone or in a group, guests can explore the surrounding area on foot, by bike, or on horseback. Afterwards, the spa and wellness area with whirlpool and sauna offers the perfect place to unwind.
The old Mallorcan estate from the 13th century is a great project of nature, culture and sustainability. On almost 200 hectares of land, in addition to the hotel complex, there are vineyards, orchards, wheat fields and beehives for its own honey production. A place to connect with oneself and one’s surroundings and to follow new spiritual paths.
The 31 rooms are spread throughout the grounds, some in the main building, some in casitas with private pools. Minimalist design and noble, natural materials characterize the interior and reflect the harmony with nature. Ecological and regional diversity can also be found throughout the grounds - in the hotel’s own restaurant in the form of traditional Mediterranean cuisine.
At Es Racó d’Artà they believe in a lifestyle connected with oneself and with what surrounds us, aware of the details and discovering the authenticity of things.
Es Racó d‘Artà: A place for your wellbeing
At Es Racó d’Artà, you give back. Not only to nature but also yourself. Surrounded by nature, you can unwind, be free and feel at home. We met up with the people behind this special retreat and asked the owners about all things sustainability, and what we can do to give back to nature as well.
How did Es Racó d’Artà start? What’s the history behind it?
The story that our finca tells is a story that took place in Mallorca. This type of finca was a manor house, and the families who lived there were the top in the economy, based on agriculture and livestock. The older sons would inherit the big house, while the younger ones would inherit the other land belonging to them, which was not so fertile, and turned out to be beaches. Then the first tourists arrived and realised the breathtaking beauty of our waters and the island. So, the young people became hoteliers and little by little, these farms were abandoned, and tourism became our only source of income. For us, there is one keyword: balance. That is the secret, and to achieve it, we want to make the world understand that Mallorca is not only sun and beaches, but also culture, archaeological findings, history, nature, natural events, art, gastronomy... and so much more. We want to be able to offer a worthwhile inheritance to those who come after us, to be able to give to their beloved island a respect that will prevail when we are no longer here.
And how do you achieve that? How do you address the sustainability topic at Es Racó d’Artà?
We live with sustainability as our core value. Es Racó d’Artà is a concept that aims to go back to the origins of the island, when essence, architecture, culture, gastronomy and nature were respected. The entire property is about 200 acres of land, with 14 acres of vineyards, olive trees, fruit trees and ecological gardens, so there is certainly a lot to explore inside and around Es Racó d’Artà.
Es Racó d’Artà is not only big on sustainability but also respect towards nature. How do you give back?
In order to create a concept in which respect, in all its definitions and versions, prevails, we had to focus on where respect begins: in oneself, in our inner self. That is why we decided to base ourselves on a non-restrictive retreat centre, where everyone can find their own path to consciousness and self-transformation, enjoying the true culture of the island, and knowing that, this time, they will not leave a trace after their enjoyment. We refer to these people as respectful tourists with the desire to connect.
We started the project with a solid intention to give the land the love it’s been missing, to give it back what it deserves. That is why we started with agriculture, and we are now able to produce our own vegetables, olive oil, flour, fruit, wine, natural essences, and honey on the farm, as
well as using rainwater from our natural wells. Last year, we were awarded organic certification, which we are very proud of. Once we had all of that under control, we started with the tourist product, restoring an old property dating back to the 12th century, which was formerly a Muslim community called Berbere. When we acquired the farm, it had already been designated a natural park, so our commitment became even more enormous and real. During construction, we paid great attention to applying sustainable solutions, using 100% high-quality, local and natural materials and traditional Mallorcan processes. We respect the original structure of the finca and integrate nature in all its essence. Nature prevails over mankind, and our owners believe that it is nature that gives them the gifts to create.
Last but not least, design can be a symbol of respect for nature. How important is this kind of design for you?
Our architect and designer, together with our constructor, both owners of the finca, chose to work with local technicians, craftsmen and woodworkers. They selected high-quality materials, unbleached textiles, local and organic products, and chose local artists who lovingly designed and created all the decorative pieces that feature in Es Racó d’Artà. The love and care they show makes a big difference, and we have huge respect and gratitude for their passion.

Ambiente Sedona
All about connecting to a dramatic landscape
The Ambiente™ Sedona offers discerning guests an immediate nature experience. Located on the edge of Red Rock State Park, the architecturally interesting resort is a modern and elegant retreat surrounded by stunning scenery. The landscape hotel is the first of its kind in North America. During construction, careful attention was paid to disturbing the surrounding natural environment as little as possible. Respect for the land and the flora and fauna it contains is evident throughout the property. For example, the restoration of an ancient watercourse was included in the design, which guests can admire as a calming production.
Also in the furnishing of the residential units, emphasis was placed on transferring the original beauty of Sedona to the interior of the rooms. The interiors are designed with casual elegance. The 40 atriums are decorated in soft earth tones, and floor-to-ceiling windows offer 180-degree views of the national park and iconic red rock formations. Each atrium is luxuriously appointed and features a rooftop deck, fire pit, and day bed. Thus, they can enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing the comfort and style of your atrium. The modern ambiance of the hotel is uncompromising and authentic. The location in the “Red- Rock-Statepark” is unique. Thus, contemporary luxury and the natural environment combine in a harmonious way.
“Framing the dramatic Red Rock mountains and ridges, Ambiente Resort embraces the wild aesthetic of Arizona into its interior concept.”
The story of Ambiente Sedona
Where modern and minimalist meet. Where wilderness and nature come together. That’s when you know you are at Ambiente Sedona. We talked to boss sisters Jennifer and Colleen and they told as all about Ambiente.
Can you share the story of how the idea for Ambiente Sedona came about and what inspired you to embark on this project together?
Our father had just finished a restaurant project on a nearby property that has gorgeous views and we loved seeing people come to enjoy the beauty of what Sedona is. A family friend owned the only other piece of land near that first development that had those same views and he had decided not to develop it after all and offered it to us. He’d already had a hotel concept designed for that piece of property but had decided not to pursue it, so when we went to walk the land, realised the views were the same and saw the beauty of the property, we decided to take it on, but also wanted to create something unique and different rather than a standard big box-style hotel. The topography
of the land was beautifully unique and that led us to come up with the idea of separating the 40 rooms out into individual atriums on stilts so that we would be able to control the height and direction of each of them independently. This meant we could offer the best views with the maximum amount of privacy.
What roles did each of you play in the development and management of Ambiente Sedona, and how do you think your individual strengths complement each other in running the hotel?
The project started over eight years ago and initially it was just my father Mike Stevenson and I. My sister Colleen was living in Phoenix at the time and finishing raising her kids before moving up to join us a few years ago. Dad was very involved in the entire process and helped with the construction side of things, which was amazing because he was in construction years ago and knew so much about all things related to the nuts and bolts of building. The interior design was a “sisters” job and we spent many hours shopping for everything related to interior design and also for the operations of a hotel. I have a huge amount of respect now for people who run large construction jobs and are able to keep everything straight and on time.
Building a hotel is a significant undertaking. Can you describe some of the challenges you faced during the development phase, and how you overcame them as a family team?
We encountered many difficulties in the process. The design was so unique and new that the City of Sedona wasn’t quite sure what to do with us, but they did fully support the project and were excited about it. They were working on being the second city in the United States to join the Global Sustainable Tourism Alliance and we were exactly the flagship property development that they wanted to see. Probably the biggest hurdle we encountered was that we literally started the construction process and a month later COVID hit, which seriously impacted almost everything from meetings with the city to supply chains, etc. Sourcing was a challenge because rather than going somewhere to physically shop, a lot of it had to be done online and by email and that was a huge challenge to overcome, but it all worked out beautifully. Any of the items we had already started to order that were coming from overseas were held up due to shipping issues and so many times we had to go back to the drawing board and re-source things to replace those items.
Ambiente Sedona is known for its unique and eco-friendly architecture. Could you elaborate on the design philosophy behind the hotel and how it integrates with the natural beauty of Sedona?
Our concept was to marry modern, minimalist design with earthy, organic elements to literally bring the outdoors into the spaces, but also to create these atriums so that they look like they floated down from the sky and gently dropped into place without disturbing the beauty of the land. So many hotels design and build out the environment you go to visit and it’s all been “created” for you. We wanted to flip that entire concept inside out and let the beauty of the ancient land be the focal point. The atrium is your private theatre to the natural world around you and it is your Sedona on IMAX view the minute you open the motorised curtains in the morning.
Collaboration is crucial in any family business. How do you navigate the dynamics of working together as siblings? Are there any unique advantages or challenges you’ve encountered?
Thankfully we are a very close family and work very well together. The biggest part of that is having mutual respect for each other so we can share ideas and hash out disagreements in a productive way, and that is really key. This experience has actually brought us closer together in many ways and we are so excited for the future and to see where it leads us.
As entrepreneurs and hoteliers, what advice would you give to others looking to follow their dreams in the hospitality industry?
Never give up. You will hit many roadblocks and things will never go as smoothly as you had hoped, but every challenge makes you stronger and when you overcome those challenges, the satisfaction is even greater.
Looking to the future, do you have any expansion or new projects in mind for Ambiente Sedona?
Absolutely! I think what we have created is a “brand” that will stand the test of time, will fit into many beautiful places and we have created a culture that truly resonates through our staff to our guests. All of our guests have said that they feel like family when they come to Ambiente and that our staff truly seem happy to be here. In fact, we have had several guests who have already returned for their third trip, which speaks volumes. The truth is, our staff are truly happy to be here and we make sure that they feel very appreciated, because they are.
