Some luxurious skiing areas have already been on top for more than 100 years. St. Moritz for example. Others have become high flyers during the past few years. And then there are those that are entirely un­known or have fallen into obscurity. A trip through the past and present of winter sport.

St. Moritz is the measure of all things. Five skiing world championships have taken place in this legendary Swiss skiing resort. The first in 1934, the most recent in 2017. And James Bond, probably the most famous Brit on skis, was up and about here, under the choreography of the Austrian Willi Bogner. The only fly in the ointment, albeit a rather large one: in the James Bond film “The Spy Who Loved Me”, St. Moritz had to appear as an Austrian skiing resort. It is a further humiliation that St. Moritz did not even make it into the top 10 global ranking of the online platform skigebiete-test.de. Nevertheless: in the competition ranking of skiresort.de, the skiing area in the Enga­­ din still comes in 10th, but in a tie with the Skicircus Saalbach-Hinterglemm/ Leo­gang-Fieberbrunn, Arosa Lenzerheide, Mayrhofen – ​Penken/Ahorn/Rastkogel/

Eggalm, the Zillertal Arena, Les 3 Vallées – ​ Val Thorens/Les Menuires/Méribel/ Courchevel, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, Vail and Tignes-Val d’Isère. Both testers have traditional Austrian ski-regions at the top. skigebiete-test.de puts “Ski Arlberg” in first place, whereas skiresort.de on the other hand favours Kitzbühel/Kirchberg, or KitzSki for short. One could also regard the two authoritative skiing area rankings as an example of how subjective and thus uninformative rankings are. But, nevertheless, nine regions have made it into the top 10 list of both “skiing area rating agencies”. However, only skigebiete-test.de provides a clear ranking from 1 to 10. skiresort.de, on the other hand, awards no fewer than eight 2nd places and nine 10th places, each in a tie. So that nobody is insulted? But it is not possible to entirely avoid giving offence. Cortina d’Ampezzo, for example, could really be upset about its place in the ranking. This renowned skiing area in the South Tyrolean Dolomites does not merit a mention in either of the rankings. This is despite holding three skiing world championships – ​the most recent, however, was in 1956, 62 years ago, though at the same time as the Olympic Games. And unlike St. Moritz, Cortina was able to present itself in a James Bond film under its own name: in “For Your Eyes Only”, Roger Moore, got into several skirmishes, not only on the ski slope, but also the bobsleigh run, the ice rink and even the ski jump.

Brosnan raced around Chamonix in 1999 with “Elektra” Sophie Marceau (“The World Is Not Enough”), and Timothy Dalton was chased through the snow around the Weißensee in Carinthia by the Czechoslovakian border police in “The Living Daylights”. Czech border police? Yes, the Weißensee region played the role of the Czechoslovakian-Austrian border area. But in the film, Vienna also had to slip into the role of the current Slovakian capital Bratislava. Also worth mentioning is Mürren in the Jungfrau region in Switzerland, or to be precise the Schilthorn. There, James Bond actor George Lazenby took skis to escape unscrupulous pursuers. And also fought his way through the valley village of Mürren and the neighbouring Grindelwald.

Perhaps inclusion in James Bond films is, after all, a more worthwhile quality criteria for skiing regions to draw upon. In “Spectre”, 2015, Daniel Craig fought his way through Sölden in the Tyrol, Pierce

Skiing regions outside Europe do not play much of a role, either in the rankings (apart from exceptions in Canada and the USA) or in James Bond films. This is the only explanation for the above-mentioned deep snow adventure of Pierce Brosnan being shot in Chamonix despite being set in Azerbaijan. Despite this, the former Soviet Republic – ​like all Caucasus States of the former Soviet Union – ​has thoroughly impressive skiing areas with spectacular mountain settings to offer. SK I I NG S TORI ES Aspen in Colorado is now regarded as the richest city in the USA. A house there costs 1.5 million dollars on average. Aspen owes its fame as a traditional skiing area (Alpine WSC 1950) to the decline of silver mining in the 19th century, which called for a new direction. The Austro-Hungarian Major General Theodor von Lerch brought skiing to Japan at the beginning of the 20th century. In the city Jōetsu, a well-known skiing region (albeit rather an unspec­tacular one accor­ ding to European stan­dards), there now stands a memorial to this skiing pioneer.

In the Swiss skiing region of Adelboden you will find Switzerland’s reportedly first snow-farming ski piste. For this, snow is kept in well-isulated storage over summer, so that a piste can already be prepared from October before the first snowfall. Snow farming also exists for example in Kitzbühel, and for the cross country ski tracks of Seefeld, Ramsau and Davos. The world’s biggest skiing areas are located in France (and Switzerland): Les Portes du Soleil extends over both countries and is reported to comprise 650 piste kilometres. Although Les Trois Vallées (Val Thorens, Méribel and Courchevel) in France has 50 kilometres less, the area is “continuous”. “Les Quatre vallées” (Verbier) in the Swiss Canton of Valais has around 400 kilometres to offer.

CIS‘ aim is to build a connection between the creative and the classical industry to enhance their market performances. EBERHARD SCHREMPF: “We stir things up.”

Martin Lesjak is a multi-award winning architect and designer. His construction site is the world. He realises his projects, museums, corporate architecture, business apartments, and holiday apartments in Saudi Arabia, Chicago and New York just as he does in Vienna, Bolzano, or Graz. Lesjak is thus one of the flagships of Creative Industries Styria (CIS), but by no means the only one. “What is decisive is the enormously high quality, regardless of whether it happens in Berlin, Frankfurt, or Graz”, says CIS-CEO Eberhard Schrempf. Another architect in the network is Thomas Pucher. With his agency, which has 45 employees and is thus rather small from an international perspective, he built the Sinfonia Varsovia Concert Hall in Warsaw, for example. It appears thoroughly equal in quality to the internationally celebrated Elbe Philharmo­nic in Hamburg by Herzog & de Meuron.

Another international CIS company is Bongfish. Here, mobile games are deve­ loped for major customers such as Redbull Media House, Microsoft and Wargaming.net, delighting millions of gamers. It is likely that hardly any of them know that the games studio is not based in one of the big European metropolises, but instead almost invisibly in the old town of Graz. For good reasons, as Schrempf knows: “The companies remain here, because the quality of life is good and because they have roots here.” Perhaps also because such sites embody European culture, which is sought by American and Asian clients. “This European culture cannot be transferred either”, says Schrempf. Seen from this perspective the site is “not a disadvantage”. Being in a smaller city does have one dis-­ advantage, however: finding talented employees is a challenge. This can, however, become an advantage for the companies: “They grow more slowly, more organically, and more healthily”, says Schrempf, than it might be the case in some of the world’s hotspots where it seems to be crawling with designers and IT people. Some of the CIS members are also deeply immersed in their work. Like Josef Göbel, for example, who has among other things, a sophisticated private residence in Dubai on his list of references. Or Messner, also an artisanal interior specialist, who fits out luxury class private villas, yachts, cruise liners, hotels and restaurants around the world. Or Mareiner, the wood finishing expert who turns properties into something very special in France, Norway, Germany, Slovakia, Switzerland and Turkey, but also of course in his home base

of Austria. The strategic design agency Moodley functions as a direct go-between between classical high-end products (e.g. PANTHER, the airport fire engine) and efficiency-orientated branding, by optimizing vehicles for leading producer Rosenberger in the field of Industrial Design.

„We povide fresh input and even stir things up in a positive sense, we let in influences from outside, offer encouragement and assistance and sound out possibilities for coorperation“, that is how Eberhard Schrempf describes the CIS‘ role for its members. And a lot is being made possible: there is the software developer Parkside, the events company Koop, which is responsible for the VIP hospitality at Redbull Air Race events such as in Abu Dhabi, Cannes, Chiba (Japan), Kazan (Russia) or Indianapolis and Fort Worth (USA). Mindconsole, which has received three awards for the visuals at the TEDx conference at Sydney Opera House. 13&9, the product design “sister” of Innocad. Or Prödl, the kitchen specialist and international partner of architecture, that cre​ates nothing more nor less than the “kitchen of the future” together with the design agency Polzhofer. They are all world citizens and global companies. They have all stayed true to their roots. cis.at

John Harris sounds like America. In fact, the native-born Viennese Ernst Minar has built up this luxury fitness chain with twelve studios since 2000.

Minar worked in the American pharmaceutical industry for a long time and drew a remarkable conclusion from this experience: It occurred to him “that the best medicine is fitness sport”, as he put it in an interview with the Austrian daily paper Der Standard. He produced a unique concept for his John Harris Fitness Studios: The fitness centre is combined with a Medical Centre.

Guests in need of motion are straight away pleased by the generous wardrobes. On elegant wood parquet under exclusive concept-lighting, in front of golden velvet curtains and under crystal chandeliers the training is extremely well-groomed. Exclusive saunas and pools – ​incidentally located in excellent city locations – ​round off the work on body and/or health. Of course, your own personal trainer contri­ butes to motion without regret with your individually adapted training plan. This is based on the analysis of the body compo­ sition in combination with the world’s most accurate body analysis scales.

For people who are quite happy to spend money on their health, but have little time, the focus is placed on efficiency. “With us you can train all your muscles in 16 minutes in the circle”, says Minar. E S S AY His great historical adventure novel “Das Floß der Medusa” (Zsolnay publishing house) was awarded the Bayerischer Buchpreis (Bavarian Book Award) 2017 and was on the shortlist for the German Book Prize 2017.

If ethnologists were to look at winter sport, they would conclude that skiing was a religious ritual, the only purpose of which was to placate the gods of the mountains. How else would one explain all the effort? People cut swathes out of the forests, build big, blocky lift facilities, ensure white pistes with snow machines, build huge hotels in rough terrain, and prepare the snow with monstrous tracked vehicles. And all of this is only in order to slide down the slopes, more or less elegantly, on boards. To any foreign culture, skiing must seem pointless, like something that can only be explained as a religious cult – ​similar to the Mayas’ football game with big suspender belts or the Aztecs’ sacrifice of human hearts.

In this case, the pleasure lies in the overcoming of the elements. Like the surfers, who lie on their boards in the sea for hours, waiting for the wave, to then ride on the ocean for moments, skiers go to a lot of bother, forcing themselves into clothing resembling a sleeping bag, and boots reminiscent of medieval instruments of torture, to swerve down fields of snow in a barren landscape, to stand on a knife-point for moments, to defy elemental forces with fast, elegant sweeps. Skiing is like the toe-dancing of a ballerina on a wobbly pyramid of chairs: the exhibiting of the impossible. For this, one endures tearful hours of learning and suffering, falls, and every risk of injury. Skiing is a religion. 60 years ago, my father used to put up with bus trips lasting hours to ascend a mountain, and to ski down once, one single time.

When I was a child, there were uncomfortable chair and button lifts, which we used to the very last minute because they were so expensive. Back then, we took sliced cold sausage sandwiches and a flask of tea along with us. It did not matter to us that we had to queue up forever for the lifts and came home soaked in the evening. We, believers of the Ski God, wore self-knitted pullovers and old anoraks, and had skis that were much too long, handed down by elder relatives. Now, all that has changed. A means of locomotion for poor mountain farmers has become a luxurious leisure pursuit. One stays in expensive hotels with a spa area, and in the evenings one is served fillets of Scottish highland beef with cranberry-vinaigrette and saffron risotto or New Zealand cod on fennel purée with scallops – ​ accompanied of course by exquisite wines. The skis have a core of gneiss rock and use ther­moplastics from aircraft construction, with chro­mium steel and Canadian cedar, carved at the equinox by moonlight – ​and cost the same as a small car. On top of this you have wind-channeltested sticks from a Swiss high-precision factory, individually adjusted, and heated shoes, astronaut clothing. It is like with religion. Earlier, there used to be poor pilgrims and suffering martyrs who endured inhuman hardships to serve their god. Today, the Church of Winter Sport is luxuriating in splendour and extravagance, building summit stations like cathedrals and hotel complexes like Benedictine monasteries. And the world religion of winter sport wants to send out missionaries and expand. What will that lead to? To a religious war! But until that happens, we should be humble, enjoy, and pray that things stay like this for a few more decades, because, after all, it is lovely.

There will be another instalment in 2020. “Homo Faber” – ​man the maker – ​is one of the most famous novels in literary history, written by the Swiss author Max Frisch. Human creation was also at the centre of the major exhibition “Homo Faber”, which took place in the second half of September 2018 in the picturesque Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice.

“We have not only chosen Venice because the city is a bastion of culture and in­comparable beauty, but also because it was always an international centre of exchange and relationships – ​and it still is today”, said Franco Cologni, co-founder of the Swiss Michelangelo Foundation, which developed this humanist project.

Craft has many aspects – ​the range of themes extended from the poetry of wood to imaginative interior design. One of the focuses of the exhibition was of course fashion, which, despite being an industry, would be inconceivable with­out craftsmanship. The curator of this area was Judith Clark, Professor at the prestigious University of Arts in London. She arranged the exhibition “Fashion Inside and Out” with the aim of motiva­ting young fashion designers into fruitful cooperation with (artistic) craftspeople. Because, says Clark, the success of contemporary star designers would be inconceivable without craftsmanship. And they showed impressive examples, which ranged from Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel, to Anne Valerie Hash to Natacha Ramsay-Levi and Chloé. analogue art blending with the digital Christoph la Garde, managing partner of im Kinsky, describes its contemporary orientation in more detail: “Apart from our core business of auctioning we want to some extent to act as an incubator and career accelerator for artists whose work we show.” PIC T U R E I N T H E PICT URE The opening of this exhibition series in autumn was devoted to the new shooting star of young art – ​Stefan Draschan. Born in 1979 in Linz, he became known for pictures of pictures. People matching Artworks, the title of Draschan’s photographic series, shows people who look rather similar to what they are viewing. In one work, a punk with carmine red hair is looking at the painting “Flowers” by Andy Warhol. His hair is the same colour as the flower on the picture by the pop art icon, right down to the nuances. On another photograph, a museum visitor admires the blue and green lily pond of Claude Monet – ​ and her flower-print dress matches it perfectly. At exhibitions, Draschan waits with his camera for two events to come into congruence, on and in front of the picture. The coincidence of events manifests itself in correspondences of motifs,

patterns, colours and structures, as they occur between the picture and viewer. The exhibition, curated by Angela Stief as if in the living room of a collector, was combined with paintings and furniture of the Kinsky auction “Old Masters, Paintings of the 19th Century and Antiquities”. Draschan’s snapshots invited the visitors to place themselves in front of a picture and to photograph themselves with their mobile phone. When the snapshots are then shared, there is a merging of analogue

and digital space. Im Kinsky sweeps away the patina. In spring, Draschan was already working on shots in the same series in the Oberes Belvedere. Four subjects have been selected and published on cultural placards, Citylight posters, and advertisements. In the first half of the 20th century, holiday resorts were advertised with impressive posters as were the means of transport that took people far away. The auction “Rare & Important Travel Posters” of Swann Auction Galleries in New York in October 2018 showed how excitingly designed these vintage posters were. One exemplary poster for St. Moritz was created by Walter Herdeg in 1934. Herdeg, a graduate of the Zurich Kunstgewerbe­ schule, was Art Director for this famous Swiss ski resort in the 1930s. Herdeg was convinced that abstract designs would not appeal to people. In his posters, he therefore wanted to create an atmosphere full of sensuality, that would awaken in viewers the desire to breathe in fresh air, enjoy the warm sun, and ski. Herdeg worked with photo montages, to which he applied spray gun techniques. For the first time, a holiday resort was given a corporate design. Herdeg’s trademark, a brightly shining sun, is still used today. His poster with two skiers, a shining sun, an English po­liceman, and the red St. Moritz logo was valued for auction at 4,000 to 6,000 US dollars. Also auctioned were posters for other traditional skiing regions, such as Davos, Cortina, the Arlberg and Lake Placid. E X PE RT I SE I N MANY A REA S The expert in vintage posters at Swann Galleries is the owner Nicholas Lowry himself. His favourite objects include a poster for Aspen by the Austrian Bauhaus graphic artist Herbert Bayer, who emigrated to the USA. According to Lowry he is one of the most famous artists ever to have created a poster for an American skiing region. A pink steamer can be seen floating as it were between dark skyscrapers on a poster by Kenneth D. Shoesmith. Estimated value: 7,000 to 10,000 US dollars. Mr Kirnbauer, you have followed in the footsteps of your father as the scion of a wine-growing family: What new elements have you brought to the vineyard today? We have developed a philosophy of sus­tain­ ability with a very modern touch: We complete up to four work steps in the vineyard in just one drive in the tractor – ​with lower CO2 emissions and less soil compaction. Using a probe, we measure temperature values, precipitation and air humidity, and calculate the risk of fungal infections in combination with the weather forecast. Thus we specifically prevent diseases. And we heat with wood from our own woodland, and use the electricity from our photovoltaic system. “Conservation through technology” one might say.

31 years ago, a phantom was sighted on your vineyard for the first time – ​the eponymous cuvée of your establishment. Does the vintner show his true soul in the cuvée? The cuvée is the premier class of wine. In it, you taste the best from many wines – ​ and a lot of lifeblood flows into the bottle.

But unlike a doctor who forever deals with sick people, I move within an environment where I can enjoy a good atmosphere and positive dynamism. In the vineyard, my favourite thing is looking after the stocks in midsummer, and in the cellar it is the time of grape acceptance and selection. This comes down to just a few hours.

Which wine do you recommend for autumn and winter? With chestnuts, game, and goose I recommend a varietal Merlot – ​because of its forestal aroma. You can taste autumn foliage, forest floor, a little truffle – ​this wine is also very suitable for a nice glass in front of the fireplace.

Do you already have an idea for a future cuvée? If so, what character do you want it to have? My last cuvée had a very private character – ​I composed it on the occasion of my wedding this year in June. It is only meant for personal enjoyment, however. We do already produce very popular cuvées: the K + K Cuvée in the base range, THE PHANTOM in the upmarket segment and in the absolute premium range FOREVER. A Blau­fränkisch for the absolute top segment would still interest me, though.

& with the finest note of juniper The picturesque scenery of Southern Styria is characterised by ranges of hills and vineyards, but a fine international drink is also manufactured here – ​Styrian Pale Gin. Its name, Aeijst, might not trip off the tongue, but it can be simply and tastefully explained: In the local Styrian dialect, Aeijst (pronounced: Ej-st) means branches – ​and Aeijst is a Styrian gin made from juniper, fresh from the branches. The idea occurred to Wolfgang Thomann years ago while he was distilling his own juniper schnapps. At the tasting, his whole

family was delighted by the flavour. The copper distilling kettle developed into a distillery, which was relocated to an old winegrower’s house in St. Nikolai in the Sausal. Juniper, lavender, ginger, cardamom and lemon grass are some of the nine botanicals, the 100-percent organic ingredients of Styrian Pale Gin. Every single one of the ingredients is critically tasted before being combined in a harmonious recipe for a “London Dry Gin”. Aeijst Gin has received several awards thanks to its simultaneously complex and rounded flavour, including taking silver at the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2015 in London. The fine packaging is also a signature feature. Gin lovers can see at first hand how it is created at the 400-litre distillery. They can even make the gin themselves: There is a special workshop for this at which the participants can cut the botanicals themselves and put them together to their own taste. If Hannes Tanzer had to be a culinary herb he would choose to be thyme. “Fruity and aromatic at the same time”, as he describes thyme. Translated into the human charac­ ter, this would perhaps mean: gentle and multi-faceted … It is undisputed that the chef of the South Tyrolean gourmet hotel has a multifaceted cooking style. He learnt the classics from his father Hans: Dumplings, stews, Sunday roast. With his entry into cooking, the son has brought his own changes, in the form of sesame, coriander and different types of pepper, but also with new cooking me­thods. Hannes Tanzer’s special magic touch for Italian and Mediterranean cuisine derives from his time at the renowned Lo­canda 4 cuochi in Verona. For example, he since has become known for divine pasta creations – ​ among other things.

BE T WE E N T RADI T ION AN D I N STAGRAM Anyone who simply thinks of spaghetti with sugo is very much mistaken. It is not without reason that the Tanzer received 14 points in the Gault Millau, was mentioned in the Michelin Red Guide, and was awarded two cooking spoons from the “Schlemmer Atlas”. Numerous renowned restaurant guides are now pointing gourmets to Issing in the Puster Valley. There, Alba truffle improves the tagliatelle – ​or, with salsifies, it accompanies the saddle of venison. As a guest to the restaurant, one dines in the stylish Merlotstube or Uhrenstube rooms; the hotel guests are served separately. The chef likes to find inspiration from tasting the creations of colleagues, but also on Facebook and Instagram. And anyone who is interested is welcome to watch him cooking in the kitchen.

These unusually flavoured chocolates com­ bine the expertise of the caviar spe­cialist Helmut Schlader with the know-­how of the AQARIUM team: Head Chef Peter Reithmayr and Sous Chef David Bernauer. Restaurant Manager and Sommelière Ca­rina Egger helps guests find their way in the 25-page wine menu. Gault Millau has already honoured the excellent work of the AQARIUM team with two toques, and it was selected as a newcomer in Upper Austria in the Gourmet-Guide À la carte 2019. The villa guests of the Geinberg5 also have the possibility of enjoying an AQARIUM dinner in their own suite, between 6 pm and 10 pm.
