TOPIARY BEATLES ARE AT THE CUTTING EDGE OF TRAIN JOURNEYS Life-size topiary figures of Liverpool’s most famous band will now greet travellers at Liverpool South Parkway. The topiary Beatles were grown in Italy from privets cultivated in the Wirral and will now greet the thousands of visitors to Merseytravel’s most iconic interchange. The topiary is one of a series of public art commissions for the interchange, which is a key link from Merseyside’s public transport network to Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The installation of the topiary comes weeks after Merseytravel took ownership of The Beatles Story attraction and announced plans to create a brand new attraction at its new £10.5million Pier Head Ferry Terminal. Councillor Mark Dowd, Chair of Merseytravel, said: “Liverpool South Parkway is taking off in passenger terms and is known across Europe as one of the most modern and environmentally friendly interchanges. “We hope these new topiary figures will be a great new edition to the terminal. As well as bringing some extra life to the interchange these also reinforce our own green credentials.” Neil Scales, Chief Executive and Director General of Merseytravel, said: ”Its an imaginative design and reinforces what we are trying to do to bring life

LORD MAYOR’S PARADE With just weeks to go before the Lord Mayor’s parade on 7th June, the event promises to be eco-friendly. Organisers plan to replace motorised vehicles that traditionally carried much of the procession with greener alternatives. Cycle-power promises to lead the way with horse-power, rickshaws and even electrically-powered milk floats making up the parade – plus good old fashioned walking! The Mayoral parade cart will be pulled by 08 volunteers! Councillor Rotherham said: “This year, as European Capital of Culture the city has so much to celebrate that we aim to have a truly spectacular event. The Lord Mayor’s parade is a great way for people to give to charity, have a great deal of fun and show off Liverpool’s uniquely diverse community at the same time. We are trying to give the event a much greener emphasis, as no one wants to parade behind smelly petrol or diesel fumes which release greenhouse gasses that contribute to global warming.”

TOP TIPS FOR TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN Plan in advance. Book early to take advantage of free child places and always book your kids clubs to ensure your kids have places.

Give your child their own travel case for the holiday, pack it with games, toys and books so they have plenty to occupy themselves with on long journeys.

Carry sweets or chewing gum on flights as the air pressure in some cabins can cause earache for young children.

Travel light to avoid unnecessary stress. You child doesn’t care whether they have 7 different outfits with matching shoes for the week’s holiday. Plus they won’t be wearing much during the day so why weigh yourself down?

Pack a bottle of dilute fruit squash drink. It’s less expensive than buying drinks abroad and, more importantly, will encourage your kids to drink plenty of water in the sun.

PETS & ANIMALS

Resident Vet, Alan Humphreys, offers his advice on the wonderful world of animals. This week we scratch the surface of fleas.

W

hen I was in my neighbour’s house last month I was asked if I knew what the red marks were on the legs of all the family. Flea bites was my answer. How could it be fleas? It couldn’t be fleas! It was

January, the house is vacuumed every day, the dog was treated last summer and was not even scratching. To treat fleas you need to treat the animal and where it lives all year round. So we treated the dog with Front Line Combo drops on the back of the neck. This product will kill fleas and also stop future eggs hatching. A female flea can lay sixty eggs a day. These eggs are so small you need a microscope to see them. Flea eggs can hatch in as little as 2 days so you can quickly get thousands of fleas. It is important we try and kill the eggs already laid around the house before the dog was treated. We used a veterinary spray product, that lasts a year around the house particularly under the fridge, dishwasher and where the carpets meet the wall. Flea eggs hatch and have a caterpillar stage, then like butterfly caterpillars have a cocoon or pupa stage. The adult flea which jumps and sucks blood comes out of this pupa. The fleas can stay in this pupa stage for up to 18 months. It is virtually impossible to destroy them in the pupa stage. Regular hoovering will stimulate the fleas to come out of the pupa and they will die after a day or so from the spray used in the house so you will see some fleas for a few months. Fleas are a problem all year round so it best to treat your pet all year round. When your pet is grooming itself to get rid the fleas it will eat them. Fleas often have inside them tape worms which can infect your pet , so when your pet has fleas, treatment for tape worms is needed. Some animals, particularly cats, can develop an allergy to flea saliva. These animals untreated lose a lot of fur, have scabs and get skin infections. In these animals flea control on the animal and in the house must be very strict and antiinflammatory drugs may be needed on a regular basis. The type of flea control and how often you do it will depend on if your animal is allergic to fleas, how many pets you have, if there are many ticks in your area

and what product works best in your area. Your local veterinary surgeon will advise you what works best in your area. Be careful of purchases from the internet. If the supplier has run out of

cat flea products they have in the past sent the next nearest match by the computer which has been small dog flea treatment containing permethrin which has killed cats when used by accident. Following treatment Joey is now free of fleas and the bites have healed on my neighbours so everyone is happy. Cat and dog flea bites in this country do not cause any diseases in people.

PARENTS & CHILDREN

Not enough time in the day to fit it all in? May be it’s time to hire some help around your home…

H

iring home help is no longer just for the lady of the manor. The rise in domestic staff has leapt dramatically over the years as people work longer hours and therefore have less time to spend at home

doing the daily chores. Added to that is the rise in millionaires, thanks to the dot.com boom, and the huge profits enjoyed by a new generation of financial institutions and their senior staff. Housekeepers and butlers can enjoy a decent salary and free accommodation. In return you could enjoy an orderly house free of clutter. If that’s a little eccentric there is alternative help out there. Chores needn’t pile up to the weekend either and eat into your quality free time. With the help of a cleaner, gardener, dog walker or nanny, your house can run like clockwork during the week, while you concentrate on getting your kids to school and yourself to work. For a super organised home and family look no further than Life Style Monthly…. Firstly, find the cause of the problem and fix it. More of us are moving away from home and so grandparents, who we often rely on for babysitting and those other helpful tasks, are not easily accessible. It’s okay to ask for help from other people, it’s okay even to pay for that help if it’s going to alleviate stress and make life a little easier for you. So do you need someone to do your ironing? Actually, do you need to do any ironing at all? If you fold your clothes as soon as they come out of the dryer, you wouldn’t even notice they had not been steam pressed. There, saved you one job already. Do you need a cleaner? Do you need someone to feed the kids or do your supermarket run? Plan your meals and snacks in advance and then order online. (And go for the no-bag option, if they’re delivering to your house you can unpack your groceries at the front door and feel good that you have contributed to preserving the environment) Perhaps the dog needs walking, hedge needs trimming… the list of chores can seem endless but take them in your stride and they’ll get done. If you plan to hire some help the next thing you need to do is to work out how much you can afford to pay someone and what hours you require them. If childcare is your biggest anxiety do you need an au pair or a nanny? Live in or live out? You can avoid expensive agencies and do your research yourself on the internet. Again though, it maybe a little time consuming and that’s sort of the point of why you’re hiring help in the first place. Speak to potential candidates on the phone, a landline where possible. Invite them over and trust your instinct. Ask to see references, ask to see a driving licence or passport and take a copy of it, or at least note down the serial numbers with contact address.

of chocolates that have eye catching names such as “Beautiful”, “Lovely”, “Sensual”, “Seductive”, “Dreamy”, “Gorgeous”, “Mistress” and “Sexy” The award winning chocolates are an infusion of organic ingredients such as cardamom and peppermint, bergamot and cinnamon, sweet orange nutmeg and chilli. Deeply spiritual, Buddhist Paul, 39, uses the power of Zen to influence his cooking. He says, “ As well as cooking I have always had an alterior motive, I am sensitive to issues, attracted to the full moon and creativity. This ties in with my cooking. I am in tune with myself, I am at peace and through my calm energy and love as I can push this through into my food. When people are consuming it, they say, “ooh, that’s lovely,” It’s creating that whole whirlwind experience.” As a spiritual healer and alternative therapist expert it is no wonder that Paul describes eating his chocolates as “having a massage from within.” He says, “If you think that everything you put in your mouth has a purpose. We all need something more than your average chocolate bar, which are two a penny, theres nothing better than to experiment using essential oils in chocolate giving

Close protection is not just for Alisters any more. Event organisers and even private homes are now hiring security guards to ensure their celebrations do not attract the swinging of fists.

UK, has seen a sharp rise in the number of security companies establishing themselves. The demand

is so huge now that it is a multi-million pound industry, regulated by the Security Industry Authority. The SIA regulates all security firms under the 2001 Private Security Act and ensures that all security guards are fully trained and licensed. Security presence is everywhere, from shopping centres to supermarkets, public transport stations, to private businesses and even schools and education buildings. While the growth of general crime rate may have fuelled this demand, industry analysts believe the demand for security guards has also increased with the rise of global terrorism. “People are a lot more paranoid,” says Simon, director of Deuce Security in Liverpool. “And they have good reason to be. Many people are carrying weapons and are prepared to use them, there’s no longer the fear in some people’s minds of the consequences of being caught.”
