Go Superlambananas! More than 100 different sized replicas of Superlambananas are to form one of the zaniest and most spectacular forms of public art around Liverpool. The invasion of Superlambananas was inspired by a Japanese artist, Taro Chiezo, whose first models stand guard outside the Liverpool John Moores. The inspiration behind the original sculpture was to warn of the dangers of genetic engineering and to symbolize the playful spirit of Liverpool. Local artists and designers have come up with designs for artwork on the Superlambananas, with the works on display for 10 weeks from June 16th. Go Superlambananas celebrates all of Liverpool’s communities and see the streets, parks, neighborhoods and public spaces of Liverpool transformed into an open air, free to view visual explosion of colourful stories, art and creativity. Each artist whose work was chosen was paid an honorarium of £750.00. The event will take place over the ten-week period from 16th June to 25th August 2008 and is expected to attract thousands of visitors as well as encourage residents to become ‘tourists in their own city’. After the event many of the Superlambananas will be auctioned with 75% of the proceeds going to the Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal for 2008/9.

Macmillan and Most Haunted Ghost Tours gain exclusive access to old Liverpool slave house On Sunday 17 August Macmillan Cancer Support and Most Haunted Ghost Tours presents an exclusive access to one of Liverpool’s most haunted and historical locations to raise money for local people affected by cancer. For year’s paranormal groups have enquired, but not gained, access to this location but for one night only we will be raising funds for a Macmillan Cancer Support while investigating Liverpool’s slavery past at The Masque Theatre (The Barfly) on Seel Street which has a terrible and bloody history. The past owners were considered the largest independent transporters of slaves to this country. While others filled their ships with 500 slaves he decided that 700 would be the minimum he could and would carry. These poor souls were then held in this location to be later sold. Many perished here and were never released from this awful place. Like so many business men of the day he liked to show his wealth and had his own theatre built within this building. The history of theatre changes from an entertainment area in time to being used as an operating theatre and school for medical research. Although this does not leave a paranormal energy to investigate one lady does walk the theatre that unfortunately had not passed on when the research and exploration on her body began. Children have been seen on many occasions in this building on all of the three floors. Tracey Morgan, Community Fundraiser for Macmillan, said “We are really excited and privileged to get access to this venue and medium James Griffiths, it’s a really unique way of raising money for Macmillan and a great night for anyone interested involved in the paranormal”. One of the leading cancer charities, Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer by providing practical, medical, emotional and financial support. In the Merseyside area Macmillan fund over 37 nurses and specialist health care professionals, along with a Benefits Advisor at the Liverpool Cancer Support Centre to help people living with cancer access financial support. They also gave out over £400,000 in grants to people living with cancer in Merseyside in 2007. The night includes Most Haunted Ghost Tours investigations, an introduction to ghost hunting, refreshments, a tour of the building with psychic mediums, team dowsing workshop and demonstration of equipment, group vigils and séance in active areas. Tickets are £40, to book please phone Tracey Morgan on 01925 846751 or email: tmorgan@macmillan.org.uk

Plans for iconic canal bridge in Litherland get green light from councillors Sefton’s Planning Committee approved proposals for an impressive new bridge to replace the outdated structure at the far end of Pennington Road. The scheme is being funded through European Objective 1 and the Housing Market Renewal Initiative and will form a centre piece for a new canalside ‘urban village’ being developed through a partnership between the council and local developers. The existing bridge does not meet modern access standards and the new structure will restore a safe and high quality link for the local community. A replacement bus service will be in place to help local children during the construction process. Councillor Ian Moncur, chair of Sefton’s planning committee, said: “This attractive new bridge will be a genuine addition to the local area and will form an attractive gateway to the new canalside developments. There was a real interest in the design competition and we feel this has produced a proposal of a very high quality.

FANTASTIC FLOWER SHOW Come and see the profusion of beautiful flowers on the meadow. The Rangers will point them out, hopefully including several orchids; Southern Marsh, Spotted and Bee! RECORD CROWDS FLOCKING TO CULTURE CITY Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture celebrations are building momentum and have broken the 3 million barrier In the first four months of ‘08, latest figures show more than 2.75 million people attended a cultural event or venue across the city – a staggering 25% up on 2007, with some recording more than 50% growth. Since January 1 Liverpool’s award winning tourist information centres (The ‘08 place, Albert Dock and John Lennon airport) had more than 180,000 visitors with enquires up over 70% on last year. The city is also receiving unprecedented media coverage. It has already hosted over 600 journalists, with more than 4,200 articles in UK print media alone - including rave reviews of ‘08 artistic productions. Liverpool ‘08 is also generating extensive international print and broadcast coverage in titles such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Le Figaro, Stern Magazine, National Geographic, Sydney Morning Herald and Kuwait Times. Bryan Gray, chairman of Liverpool Culture Company, said: ‘’The impact of Capital of Culture is having an impact on our cultural and tourism sectors in a way that few if any previous culture cities have experienced. To have these figures at this stage of the year is truly amazing and surpasses all our expectations.’’ More than 350 events, many of them free, are being staged for the city’s 08 celebrations. Other blockbusters still to come include the Liverpool Sound concert at Anfield on June 1, Go Superlambananas from June 16-August 25, The Tall Ships Races on July 18-21 and the MTV Europe Music Awards in November. Phil Redmond, Creative Director of Liverpool Culture Company, said: ‘’These figures are a huge vote of confidence in our ‘08 programme and proves that people want to be – and are - at the heart of the city’s cultural offering. With so much on offer there’s no excuse for not being part of the year – and I’m delighted people have got the message.”

Treatments: Antihistamine nasal sprays These are good if you mainly have problems with your nose. They take about 15 minutes to work and can be used regularly.

Steroid nasal sprays Are more effective than anti-histamines but they have to be taken regularly and it takes about a week or more for them to work. There are different makes and it maybe worth trying a second one if the first you try doesn’t work.

It can work very well but there is a risk of a serious reaction to the injection and has to be carried out in a hospital. There is a new tablet version of this for treating grass pollen allergy which appears to be safe and effective. Again this is only available after referral to a specialist.

Asthma and Hay fever Some asthma sufferers find their symptoms worsen during the hay fever season and may need to increase or change their asthma treatment.

Pregnancy and hay fever Avoid taking tablets when pregnant especially in the first 3 months. However it is generally believed that there is a very low chance of problems when using nasal sprays or eye drops. Always consult your pharmacist or GP before taking medication.

Reduce your exposure to pollen: -stay indoors if the pollen count is high -avoid cutting the grass -wash your hair and shower after being outside -wear wrap around sunglasses -keep car windows closed

he celebrated “nose’ of the industry began his fascination with fragrances at an early age, when his mother tucked him up in bed and kissed him goodnight. Roja says, “ She was wearing a cocktail dress and the light was on in the

hallway. She just glowed. When she bent down to kiss me, her scent marked a metamorphis, she changed from an ordinary mum, whatever that may be, into an image of something truly amazing. It was one of those epiphamy moments when I knew I was born to do what I do.” In his teens he saved money from odd jobs to buy bottles of scents. True to his passion, he celebrated his 21st birthday with a visit to the Guerlain Boutique in Paris. Already wise to their legendary fragrances, he knew it was the company he wanted to work for. His intense interest in the business caught the attention of Robert Guerlain himself who offered him a job. Six years later he was bestowed the title of the world’s sole Professeur de Parfum, later becoming Guerlain’s Global Ambassador – the first nonGuerlain family member to be bestowed this title. Roja is one of the world’s few experts on perfume. He says, “How do you define a good perfume? It is the quality of the raw ingredients. Like food, you may be a brilliant cook but if your ingredients are cheap then so will the end product be. So many people in the business are driven by price and profit but not me. Creating a perfume is all about using your imagination. When I work on something new I try to imagine a smell that has never been smelt before.” And he should know. After 15 years studying

Louise says, “Our jewellery is inspired by the things around us. It is our charm bracelets that we both enjoy making. The designs for these are inspired by colours and nature around us. It is something different to what you would find on the high street. A hugely popular service we offer is our bespoke design service. THIS WOMAN CAN CHANGE THE WAY YOU WORK AND IMPROVE YOUR BUSINESS Top business psychologist and leadership coach, Anita Morris, coaches leadership development for senior managers.

S

he began her career as a management accountant before moving into sales and marketing, later becoming sales and site director with one of Europe’s largest plastics manufacturers. She set up her company, Holden Morris Consulting Ltd in 2005 and quickly gained a reputation for

excellent results. A reflection of this is a recommendation by a client which led to an invitation to discuss leadership development with the United Nations in New York. As a senior manager, Anita was asked by her boss to engage in a coaching programme. She said. “I was the guinea pig in the company when they brought a coach in, and I found it very helpful and a very positive experience.” At the same time the company she was working for merged with another, and Anita was asked to relocate, which she decided not to do. Having tapped into coaching, she accepted a job as marketing manager in a coaching company where she gathered more information about the craft. Keen to learn more, she embarked on a university degree to study Applied Psychology. After gaining a Masters in Occupational Psychology at Liverpool John Moore’s University, she took further qualifications and became a certified Master Coach. She says, “My experience of working with some coaches whose qualifications and abilities were questionable made me want to do it properly, ethically and with integrity. I always planned to set up my own business and to be in control of my own destiny.” Anita has carefully researched her work. Her company offers one to one coaching as well as innovative leadership development programmes which include sports such as falconry and golf. She works closely with senior executives in companies, helping them to improve their performance and achieve desired goals. As a specialist in emotional intelligence, she is able to help managers to deal effectively with the different and sometimes difficult personalities found in the work place. 3) Be genuine so you can build trusting relationships with other businesses.

I have always tried to keep an open mind in most aspects of my business life, especially since originating from a sales background. After attending the first meeting, I was converted and it has since changed my whole perspective on sales techniques and self marketing.” Mark was so impressed with business networking, he invested in the North West franchise for Business for Breakfast and now runs clubs across Liverpool, The Wirral, Chester and Wrexham.

Ask yourself what goals you are looking for in specific groups so you can reach the contacts you need.

Four Ways to Help Reduce Risk

in Your Portfolio

The stock market has been more volatile during the past few months, reflecting increased uncertainty. The turmoil in the credit markets, highlighted by Northern Rock’s troubles, suggests that reducing risk in your portfolio may be appropriate at this time.

To help you do this, we recommend the following: 1. Rebalance - Review your investments and rebalance your portfolio, if necessary, to keep it well diversified. 2. Reduce aggressive investments - This can help increase your portfolio’s overall quality. 3. Focus on the long term - Staying invested is one of the keys to achieving your long-term financial goals, in our opinion. 4. Add international exposure - Consider global growth and income investments if needed.

THE LAST WORD

The editor’s word is final... As editor it should come as no surprise that I like the last word. So the last page in Life Style Monthly is dedicated to just that.

W

hat an exciting month it has been. I have broken out in a sweat, not just because of the glorious weather we have been enjoying recently, but thanks to my chat with the gorgeous John Taylor

of Duran Duran. He is so excited to be coming to Liverpool to perform at the Summer Pops on 5 July, but hey, not half as excited as we are. The man is every bit as perfect as his pictures in my Smash Hits sticker album from my teen years. And every bit as well preserved. To add to the excitement in the office, Liverpool One has opened. The city is now rivalling London with its string of designer boutiques and high street stores. What better way to spend a day (and your wallet) than browsing round the shops and then finishing it off with a coffee in a café overlooking the river. Just up the coast, Southport is also enjoying a rejuvenation with its slick new street designs. Stylish restaurants and fine hotels are springing up all over the place, making this a region to be proud of. We have been lucky enough to speak to some truly fascinating people this month. Roja Dove, the Professeur de Parfum was every bit as fragrant as the work he does. Anita Morris, our business leadership expert left me feeling inspired and motivated… to turn this into an even greater magazine than it is already. I hope she does the same to you. If the sunshine and warm weather is giving you ideas of getting away to hotter climates then read our guide to the hottest European destinations. You don’t need to take a trip for a week anymore, just a break of two or three days is enough to brush the cobwebs away and give you a new lust for life. If all these shopping temptations are too much then take advantage of our money off coupons to ease your guilty pleasure. You’ve been telling us that you really like this feature in the magazine, and so we shall continue to help you out wherever we can. Keep those comments coming by emailing us. Go to our website

www.lifestylemonthly.co.uk and fill in our reader survey, we want to know what you like and don’t like, so we can make this an even better read for you. Enjoy June – and don’t forget the sun cream!
