Library treasure trove open to public FOUR of Liverpool’s leading libraries are unlocking their vaults to reveal some truly unique cultural treasures. Liverpool Central Library, which holds over 6,000 rare books, is teaming up with the university libraries at Liverpool Hope, John Moores and University of Liverpool for the ‘Treasures’ project - celebrating the historic, varied and surprising collections held in the city. The city’s stunning rare books, literary manuscripts, photographs and films will be put on display for the public until December. A series of exhibitions, talks and open days will provide a rare chance to see the city’s fascinating collections and archives for themselves. Display items include the magnificent Audubon’s Birds of America, literary manuscripts from poets including Seamus Heaney, Ted Hughes and Brian Patten. There are portrait photographs taken by Julia Margaret Cameron, who shot 19th century celebrities such as astronomer Sir John Herschel and Poet Laureate Alfred Tennyson. Also on show are the Everyman Theatre and Frankie Vaughan archives. Liverpool City Council’s executive member for libraries, Councillor Keith Turner, said: “Liverpool’s special collections archive is absolutely world class. The city has an amazing 800 year heritage and the manuscripts, books and other documents in our archive reflect our incredible past. “Over the next six months, we will be giving local people and visitors to the city a taste of the city’s varied and rich cultural heritage through a series of fascinating exhibitions, displays and talks.” Library special collections and archives are always carefully preserved in controlled conditions. They are widely used by researchers, but are not often accessible to the general public. The Treasures project aims to open up these collections to local people and tourists alike.”

MERSEYSIDE’S INNOVATION AWARD 2008 2 D Heat company walked away with £10,000 cash and £4,000 worth of consultancy as this year’s winner of The Merseyside Innovation Awards. They have developed a spray on heating element which replaces the need for traditional coiled wire elements found in domestic products. The product has rapid heating rates and a low carbon footprint. The region’s business community gathered at Liverpool’s Crowne Plaza to watch the award ceremony. Hosted by Linda Mcdermott, BBC Radio Merseyside, the finalists faced a tough panel of judges, Evan Davis, presenter of Dragon; s Den, BBC Radio 4, Steve Sealey, local entrepreneur, Chairman of Aquarius Equity Partners and Steve Morgan of The Bridgemere Group. John Lewis, from 2 D Heat, said: “We have received outstanding support from the Merseyside Innovation Awards, especially the publicity we have gained which for a small company is invaluable. Winning the award in Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year is the icing on the cake.”

News COUNCIL RECOGNITION FOR RESTORATION WORK Liverpool City Council welcomes a new report showing it is making solid progress in improving ‘at risk’ buildings in the city. In English Heritage’s newly released ‘Heritage at Risk Register’ it covers grade I and II listed buildings. The number of buildings on the list in Liverpool is down from ten to nine, following the removal of the group of four, late-Georgian properties at 98-102a High Street in Wavertree after action over the last two years. Of the nine buildings on the list, three have received improved, lower gradings as a result of council action. They are: Croxteth Hall and the laundry cottage within the hall’s grounds which have been improved as part of a programme of maintenance; and the Royal Insurance Building on North John Street, where planning permission and listed building consent for a new spa hotel are progressing. Councillor Berni Turner, executive member for the environment and the council’s historic environment champion, said: “I am pleased that the hard work going on to restore the city’s most historic buildings has been recognised by English Heritage. “We are absolutely committed to doing all we can to tackle the problems caused by owners letting their buildings fall into disrepair and become an eyesore. Two buildings have worse gradings: The North Warehouse at Stanley Dock because of continued vacancy and detnews itemerioration, and St James’s Church on Parliament Street because of difficulty finding a long-term use. However progress is being made in both cases as the Stanley Dock warehouses have had approval from the planning committee for adaptation and re-use, while the Churches Conservation Trust has repaired St James’s Church. The full list of buildings on the at-risk list is: St Luke’s Church, Berry Street

Thousands of fundraisers turned up tat Liverpool Cricket Club to form one of the largest breast cancer support groups ever seen. Celebrities included Ricky Tomlinson, Danielle Lloyd and Hollyoaks’ actress, Carly Stenson. Field of Women, organised by The Linda McCartney Centre, was designed to allow anyone affected by breast cancer to remember lost loved ones and also to celebrate life and show there is hope after diagnosis. People traveled from all over the UK and as far as Melbourne, Australia to attend the event which was the first of its kind in this country. All attendees wore pink ponchos and formed the shape of a female silhouette referred to as LUCY, which stands for ‘Listen Up, Check Yourself’, designed to encourage women to check regularly for signs of breast cancer. Once the shape was formed, people paused in silence to remember their friends and family affected by the disease and offer each other support. The Linda McCartney Centre will use the funds raised for breast cancer treatment, research and patient care. A second Field of Women event is being planned for next year. Visit www.fieldofwomen.com

PETS & ANIMALS

When should you contact your vet? By Alan Humphries

Dear Vet: I think there are worms in my cockatiels’ droppings, should I call the emergency number? No its 11.45 at night. The vet has just got to sleep and will be up at 6.00 am with a small child jumping on the vets head. This is not an emergency.

My dog has just swallowed 30 human painkillers but it looks OK, should I ring the emergency service? Yes do it now. We need to make it vomit quickly.

My dog sounds like he is tap dancing should I have his nails clipped? Most of the time the nails are fine and it is because you now have laminate floors that is the real problem. See a qualified veterinary nurse at your practice who will give you advice and clip if needed. An alternative would be to put carpet back in.

My parrot is very noisy what can I do? You need to find a deaf relative.

Do I need to clip my bird’s nails? If when the bird perches on your hand or head it hurts and you bleed the answer is yes. Do not try this with large birds of prey. Often birds do need their nails shortened. This is best done with a something like a “Dremmel” tool, using clippers can be unwise. If your bird is tame and the nails are just sharp gently wrap in a towel and use a large padded nail file. Do not put any pressure on the bird when holding it. In the home this job is best delegated to someone who spends a lot of time filing their nails. Your bird may hate you for a while though. I do one of my employee’s birds and he does mine.

This is a bad idea. Your vet will use a dental drill to cut the teeth. This can often be done conscious. A rabbit’s teeth do not have sensation all the way down. Using nail clippers can cause cracks to run right down the teeth and cause problems.

I have a Great Dane and just fed it enough food for a family of five in one meal and let it chase rabbits immediately after. It is now very swollen and when I tap its belly it sounds like a drum. My lizard hasn’t eaten for 2 days Should I be worried? what should I do? If it looks bright and is taking some water its OK to leave a while longer.

My lizard hasn’t eaten for 4 days, is dull and its toes are twitching. See the vet today it probably has calcium deficiency and needs calcium sometime as injections or at least as a liquid by mouth. There is a problem with your diet/ calcium supplementation /lighting or all three.

My rabbit’s front teeth grow very long can I clip them with nail clippers?

Yes very worried. See a vet immediately. It needs emergency treatment almost certainly surgery, Deep chested breeds such as Great Danes, Wolfhounds. Deerhounds. Mastiffs some German Shepherds are prone to the stomach twisting round on itself. Feed 2 times a day and let them rest after eating. .

My cat has sore eyes and is sneezing a lot. This is not an emergency but it would be good to have it seen in the next few days. The most common cause of this is an infection caused by an organism called Chlamydophila felis. It is good idea to vaccinate against this. It is very very rare for it to affect people. Just wash your hands after handling the cat.

Teenager showing responsibility We started a new project in our house which is called “Ben and responsibility”. Project leader is BestHusband-in-the-World, and all other tasks like setting the goals, checking the goals, keeping focused on the goals, reporting to husband and trying to interlink between husband and hopefully-soon-to-be-responsibleoffspring, is down to me. Best-Husband-in-the-world thinks “Responsibility is when you take care of your life. You judge your actions, calculate risks, set yourself goals and you reach them.” Ben the Alien thinks: “Responsibility is when you take care of yourself. You have to judge which mood the parents are in, calculate how to talk to them and then reaching your set goal” which is mostly connected to getting extra money out of them. My son may be an Alien… but he is my alien and I love him regardless.

SILLY SEASON

‘TIS THE SEASON TO

BE SILLY It is the time of year when news and stories slow down as people take their holidays. So in keeping with tradition here are some of the funniest pranks. COMPUTERS Distract your victim and go into the settings of their computer. Go into the display properties and click on the screensaver. Type in an amusing message, such “IT IS NOW SAFE TO TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER” and save it. Alternatively slow down all their functions, such as the speed of the mouse.

DINNER PARTY Hide under the table of a large dinner party. Tie everyone’s shoe laces together and watch them topple over as they try to stand up and leave the table. However don’t play this on old people, pregnant women or people with injuries as you don’t want to hurt people

PARKING TICKET Replicate a parking ticket by buying some yellow paper and wrapping it in a clear plastic wrapper. Type a note THANK YOU FOR PARKING LEGALLY and pin it to all the cars down the street.

LEAVES Block your victim in their home by piling up mounds and mounds of leaves and putting them in front of their front door. They’ll have to push their way through the leaves to get through the door. Spend days collecting leaves in the street and park, even offer to clear your neighbours’ drives to ensure you have enough leaves.

CLEVER PAPER TRICK Get a piece of paper with a tiny hole (eg the size of a pencil). Ask your victim if they could push their finger through the centre of the paper without tearing it. They will say it is impossible. The small hole in the paper is there to mislead the victim. After they have tried and failed to push their finger through , take the piece of paper and roll it into a tube. Then put your finger in the centre of the tube. You’re pushing your finger through the centre of the paper without tearing it, just as you said you would.

NOTE TO READERS: Lifestyle Monthly accepts no responsibility for damage to property or people arising from these tricks being practised.

STYLE & FASHION

MERSEYSIDE’S TOP MAKEUP ARTIST & STYLIST,

ANDREA PERRY-BEVAN Talking about how she styled the models on the following pages, Andrea introduces us to the concept of colour Try out strong colours together, opposing colours of the spectrum work well together to create a strong look For example purple and yellow, blue and orange. There are many variations on this. The look can be toned down with pastel shades working on the same basis. Colours that live side by side on the rainbow scale are very subtle and will blend for a fresher look, use 3 or more colours in similar hues like lemon, orange and copper in different parts of the eyes to create contours.

O

kay forget the sunshine in this country, but at least we can frolic

What is the meaning of summer? It’s about play, freedom and sunshine.

outside without a coat on. Summer showers are aplenty, but at least it is warm rain. Summer is not just for children and young

people, it’s for all of us to enjoy. Work winds down as everyone gets into holiday-mode, even if they aren’t actually going away. Summer is about good times, happy days. The long days lifts all our spirits and make us feel good about ourselves. As the summer holidays are here make the most of your time. Spend it with your kids before they grow up, create the comforting memories you want them to leave home with. Be silly, be daring, laugh at yourself. Stay out late, play loud music, dance, sing and enjoy yourself. Or sit back and listen to the radio- Radio City’s new drive time presenter Rick Vaughn will keep you smiling as you come home from a lazy day out. And look out for him when he signs copies of our magazine in ASDA during August. Forget the media ranting on about recession. The economy has slowed down but don’t panic! So we have to tighten our belts for a bit, is it so terrible, after all we have been spoilt over the last few years. Interest rates are still relatively low to what they were in the early 1990s. Petrol and domestic fuel may be more expensive but over the years we are still paying less than what we were ten years ago due to our cars and boilers working more efficiently and requiring less parts and labour costs. Still, the credit crunch is no fun and who wants their spirits dampened when the weather is doing a good enough job of that. To help you out, Lifestyle Monthly has plenty of free tickets to top attractions to giveaway to our readers struggling to keep costs down in the holidays. Be positive, stay beautiful and keep reading Lifestyle Monthly for all your gorgeous fashion and tips. Sought after make-up artist Andrea shares her beauty secrets with us, so slap on that lip gloss, pout and remember, as they say in High School Musical, school is out and summer’s here. Let’s party.
