EVENT

Over 150 vehicles are already registered for a modern and classic vehicle show which will take place in September.

Wheels of Nairn will take place at the Links in the seaside town on September 21 and is expected to attract up to 300 different kinds of vehicles.

It is the fourth time the event, sponsored by Nairn Car Sales, will be held in the town.

Nairn Connects BID, the organisers of the event said they are delighted with the enthusiastic response but are looking forward to receiving more entries.

Lucy Harding, manager of Nairn Connects BID said: “Within 24 hours of launching the registration process for Wheels of Nairn we had in over 70 entries. Year on year it has grown in popularity, and it looks as though 2024 will be no different.

“We have a wonderful team of local volunteers who help us from the planning stages, right through to the day itself. It’s a big event, but one which is worth it for the town.”

Lucy added: “We already know that some of the accommodation providers have received bookings from people attending the event and last year, we got great feedback from a number of the restaurants who had reservations from people who had entered their vehicles. Looking

at the entries so far, we have people coming from all over Scotland, so it just shows that this event is helping to drive footfall and tourism to our town.”

The event boasts 17 different vehicle categories and this year, new classes include campervans and 4x4s, tractors and agricultural vehicles and rally and competition vehicles.

There are lots of ways people can get involved. All of the details are on the Nairn Connects website - www.nairnconnects.com

Regular buses run between Aberdeen and Inverness stopping at Nairn Bus station which can be found opposite Falconers Lane car park. Trains also run between Aberdeen and Inverness the station can be found at IV12 4QS and is only a short walk to the High Street.

At the end of Gordon Street turn left and walk along King Street until you reach the pedestrian crossing. Cross over the road here and continue along King Street passing by the Nairn Community and Arts Centre. Take the next right along Viewfield Drive.

Walking along Viewfield Drive you will soon find Viewfield, a beautiful Georgian mansion house which now houses the Nairn Museum. In front of the museum there is a large, impressive statue of Dr John Grigor. Dr Grigor was a surgeon from Elgin who came to live in Nairn in the 1830’s. He built several properties in the town including

a large hotel. He also. promoted Nairn as an attractive tourist destination in the Victorian era.

Take a right past the museum and follow the path that takes you on to Viewfield Road. Walking along you can admire some of the beautiful houses along the way. At the end of the road take a right on to Seafield Street. At the next junction take a left and walk down towards the leisure centre.

At the leisure centre you can take the path to the left and head down to the beach to explore the rock pools or carry on the circular walk by turning right along the footpath. Passing by the splash park there are toilets a little further along. You will see the bandstand on your left which is worth the walk for a photo opportunity.

Keep going along the path or you may choose to go on to the beach until you reach the Sundancer Restaurant. You will now have reached the harbour. To your left you will find the ‘Nairn Fishwife” The bronze sculpture was erected in 2007 and is based on an actual person Annie Ralph, one of the last of the Nairn fishwives.

Walking round past the harbour you will find a footbridge that will take you over the River Nairn. From here you could walk up to the lighthouse and admire the views of the Black Isle before taking the riverside path back into the centre of Nairn.

The riverside path takes you on a quiet stroll in a wooded area with the river running alongside to your right until you reach Jubilee Bridge. Heading over the bridge follow the path through Riverside Park until you reach Mill Road.

NORTH EAST OPEN STUDIOS –Celebrating 21 years of creative spirit

Over 350 artists and creative makers across the North East of Scotland are getting ready to welcome visitors to their studios and workshops in September. Covering an area from Montrose to Forres, North East Open Studios (NEOS) is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year and will take place between 7th – 15th September.

Commenting, chair of NEOS, Lynne StaplesScott said, “The fact that NEOS has been going for over two decades is testament to the commitment and enthusiasm of countless people over the years. The North East of Scotland is home to an astonishing number of creative people who have skills ranging from traditional wood and stone carving to digital art. The nine day long Open Studios event features a wealth of creative talent and is a great opportunity for the general public to visit some of these often-hidden gems and meet the artists to find out more about what they do”.

NEOS is believed to be the biggest event of its kind in Scotland, with 300 members taking part this year. “Some are taking part as individuals while others are listed as part of a group,” says Lynne, “suggesting that the creative spirit is stronger than ever in this part of Scotland”.

This year, NEOS is also collaborating with North East Scotland College who will be opening their doors at both their Aberdeen and Fraserburgh campuses during the event to showcase new and developing talent from their HND creative courses.

It is estimated that approximately 20,000 visits are made to NEOS members over the nine days, making it a significant event in the calendar of the North East of Scotland.

To find details of artists taking part in NEOS in your area, visit www.northeastopenstudios.co.uk, download the North East Open Studios app from Google and Apple playstores or look out for the distinctive yellow catalogue in various local outlets across the area.

Free virtual school trip

From Walsall to Glasgow, Art UK’s ‘The Superpower of Looking’s Art Adventure’ takes children on a ‘trip’ across the UK, widening access to cultural opportunities and building essential visual literacy skills

Art education charity, Art UK has announced its first ever ‘virtual’ school trip – The Superpower of Looking’s Art Adventure. Taking place on Wednesday, 2nd October, the free online event is available to all primary schools across the UK and is designed to equip pupils with essential visual literacy and visual intelligence skills.

Hosted by renowned artist Sarah Graham, The Superpower of Looking’s Art Adventure will take

pupils on an exciting journey to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, Scotland, and The New Art Gallery in Walsall, England. While at both galleries, Graham will explore different artworks and invite pupils to interpret, negotiate and make meaning from the images presented to them.

Following the adventure, pupils will then be tasked with their own project - taking inspiration from the galleries’ artworks and the environment around them to create a collage that celebrates their local area.

By providing accessible access to art education, this initiative is designed to introduce a new vision for teaching and learning – championing the role of visual arts and media in a way that drives a paradigm shift in education. It will also empower pupils with lifelong skills and the ability to critically observe, analyse, question, interpret and empathise with the images all around them.

This virtual event will help schools broaden the opportunities available to pupils, particularly those in rural communities who may not be able to readily access museums and galleries, while also helping with dwindling school budgets.

Artist and host of The Superpower of Looking’s Art Adventure, Sarah Graham said:

“Partnering with Art UK to travel to galleries in England and Scotland has been such an exciting opportunity and privilege. The creative industries are vitally important, not only from a cultural and educational perspective, but also play a critical role in developing pupils’ social and emotional intelligence.

“Over recent years, access to art in schools has become increasingly prohibitive, but The Superpower of Looking’s Art Adventure makes me optimistic for the future and I’m delighted to be involved in an initiative that will nurture a love of art and learning throughout our schools.

“I look forward to seeing the potential this trip has in inspiring the next generation of artists who will make all our lives so much more colourful.”

Mike Craig, Headteacher at Arnage Primary School in Aberdeenshire, said: “Teaching visual literacy to the children in my class has helped

open up a whole new world for them. It helps them consider things in new ways, search for hidden meaning and appreciate different perspectives – skills that will stand them in good stead for their future.

“Many children are initially intimidated by art, but working in this way and with accessible and engaging resources has helped overcome this barrier and developed a true love of learning and appreciation for our creative subjects.”

Katie Leonard, Head of Learning at Art UK, added: “We are honoured to have such an inspiring artist in Sarah to help us empower and inspire pupils and teachers across the country with this project.

“We are committed to making art accessible to as many people as possible and hope that this virtual school trip brings us one step closer to making art an integral part of children’s lives and education.

To support this learning, The Superpower of Looking’s resource kit includes additional bespoke films, full lesson plans, teacher training videos and a lesson toolkit, as well as access to Art UK’s digital database, providing access to art to every child, parent and teacher across the country.

Schools can learn more about The Superpower of Looking and sign up for the Art Adventure here: https://artuk.org/learn/virtual-visit

Portsoy Gallery:

Breathing New Life

into Portsoy’s 18th Century Harbour Portsoy, Aberdeenshire - Ever believed in serendipity?

Glynn Clarkson was just visiting Portsoy when he met a man painting a fence. When he complimented the owner on the house and how beautiful it was and the stunning location, the reply came from the owner, “it is going on the market tomorrow”.

The ground floor was an old bakery in need of refurbishment, and Glynn was excited to think his dream of opening an art gallery could finally come true.

With a background as a professional photographer for many highly established and prestigious art galleries and auction houses in London and globally, Glynn knew serendipity was at play. He took a leap of faith and followed his dreams, partnering with Yana Belmega to bring the vision to life.

Nestled within the picturesque 18th-century harbour of Portsoy, the newly opened Portsoy Gallery is set to become a beacon of creativity and inspiration, 'Destination Gallery'. Founded by Glynn Clarkson and Yana Belmega, this contemporary art gallery promises to be a vibrant addition to the local arts scene. Opened in May this year, Portsoy Gallery is more than just an exhibition space; it is a sanctuary for artistic expression and a hub for community engagement.

Glynn and Yana, driven by a mission to share and support the work of talented artists, aim to bring joy, happiness, and inspiration to all who visit. The gallery’s unique setting in an 18th-century building adds a historical charm that beautifully contrasts with the contemporary artworks it houses. This blend of old and new, creates an inviting atmosphere where visitors can appreciate art in a space rich with heritage.

Summer Exhibition Currently

Portsoy Gallery is hosting a summer exhibition that showcases a diverse range of contemporary artists. Each piece on display has been carefully selected to reflect the gallery’s commitment to high-quality and thought-provoking art. From striking paintings to fine sculptures, the exhibition offers something for every art enthusiast.

Unique Features

What sets Portsoy Gallery apart is not only its impressive collection of contemporary art but also its stunning location. Situated in Portsoy’s historic harbour, the gallery provides a unique backdrop that enhances the overall visitor experience. The building itself, with its period features, serves as a perfect canvas for the modern art within.

Looking Ahead

As they look to the future, Yana and Glynn have ambitious plans for Portsoy Gallery. They aim to continue supporting a variety of contemporary artists, providing them with a platform to reach new audiences. The gallery also plans to host regular events, workshops, and community projects, further cementing its role as a cultural cornerstone in Portsoy. Whether you are an avid art collector, a casual observer, or someone looking to be inspired, Portsoy Gallery invites you to explore its inaugural exhibition and discover the joy of art in a truly unique setting.

COMMUNITY

It was 2019 when Huntly Development Trust bought Number 30. They have had an absolutely epic journey from that day until now, all through the Covid years, until at last they arrived in 2024 and they could finally say, we’re open for business.

What has been achieved at Number 30 is a magnificent building that is a credit to everyone that has been involved. All the hard work, and I’m sure quite a few sleepless nights has paid off, but it is now over to you, the public, to support it because this is a building that is a fabulous resource for the whole community of Huntly and the surrounding area.

Number 30 has everything you could possibly need in a facility. If you are planning an event, you need to consider the beautiful Gallery that is available for hire. This could be anything from a birthday party to corporate hospitality or your most special wedding day.

They have office space, do you need it for a day or on a monthly basis, this can be accommodated.

With modern equipment and excellent connectivity and of course the most important tea and coffee making facilities.

for the amazing new cinema which has sixtythree seats and ample space for additional wheelchairs too.

The cinema will be screening some of the latest releases, but much more is planned than in a traditional cinema. This will be an event cinema offering screenings of musicals, ballets, sporting events and much more.

Planning a meeting and need an accessible space, Number 30 is your ideal venue for that too.

Number 30 is fully accessible and is very proud of that and being one of a very limited number of buildings offering a changing place toilet facility, they have every right to be proud.

The building has been in limited use over this year as work has been finalised. Various small events have been able to make use of the facility but now the momentum is building with the Festival of Illustration from 29th August to 9th September in the beautiful Gallery and the Huntly Hairst on the 7th September making good use of the space for many of the market stalls.

During these events the café will be open, be it with a limited menu.

The 12th September this is the date when the full service will be launched. A new chef has been appointed and is looking forward to providing an exciting menu for the cafe. This will coincide with the launch of the programme

With fully retractable seats this is also a multifunctional space that has already been used for exercises classes and will be utilised for much more besides in the months and years to come.

A new website is being launched so watch out on social media for all the latest news. If there is something you want to see, let them know, they will be delighted to hear from you, after all, as I said, this is a community facility, and it needs the support of the community to succeed.

Nicola Baird, Business and Operations Manager said “I am so proud to be the manager of this building. It is in the heart of Huntly and the building has a heart”

I am sure you are looking forward to visiting it soon. I’m sure you will be impressed; I know I was!

“Life beyond the waistline- the expanding role of an NHS dietitian” -

Having spent almost four decades as an NHS dietitian, local author-Evelyn Newman- has put pen to paper and published a unique account of the dietetic profession through the lens of her award-winning career. She retired three years ago and was delighted to have written the first book of its genre by a UK dietitian, which blows away the weight-watching myths surrounding the job. Most of Evelyn’s work was actually spent helping people NOT to lose weight. She describes the challenges of supporting a variety of patient groups- including those suffering from serious burns; spinal injuries; kidney disease and the many elderly people being cared for in social care settings. Work has never been dull, especially during the seven years spent working a variety of high security prisons- in England and NY State, USA. She also had the opportunity to support professional footballers in NW England and had work selected for presentation across four continents.

local libraries (including on-line borrowing) and from on-line retailers.

She has been very touched by how it has been positively reviewed by both fellow professionals and by members of the public:

“Great insight into the diverse role of a dietitian and easy to read with some humour”

“This fascinating book is truly an exemplar of the adage- reach for the moon and the stars. Evelyn captures the huge strides the dietetic profession has made in shaping and influencing their role and has been at the forefront over the past four decades. Truly an inspirational read- and not being afraid to have a go. Thank you for sharing your life with us Evelyn”

Volunteering for the BDA trade union, she even became the first dietitian to present a motion at a national TUC Congress in Brighton!

If you would like to learn more about this inspirational journey, you can purchase her book from local independent bookstores in Moray, in

“This book gives an eye-opening insight into the development of the role of a dietitian, into areas I could not have imagined”

With Speyside home to 51 distilleries, the Sampling Hall will play host to over 20 stands where visitors can enjoy a dram and speak to some of the biggest global players in the industry. Distilleries and blenders taking part include Glenfiddich, The Glenlivet, Balvenie, The GlenAllachie, Gordon & MacPhail, Cardhu, Strathisla, Murray McDavid and Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky. For those who love a gin, Caorrunn, Gordon Castle and Red Door gins will also be pouring samples.

The popular Tap Room will be running again by Against the Grain Beer Emporium offering a

plethora of Speyside craft beers.

Connoisseur Masterclasses are taking place for 45 minutes each on Friday night with Gordon & MacPhail and Speyburn. Saturday afternoon is hosted by Chivas Brothers and Glenfiddich. Saturday night, Cardhu, who celebrate their 200th anniversary this year, will finish the event off in style. New for this year, a Connoisseur Pass will include an exclusive seat at two of the masterclasses for 30 guests only at a time.

The Johnstons of Elgin Lounge will be hosting special pour sessions and Premium Passes will give access to the Lounge and a voucher to use at the food vendors.

Chairman of Spirit of Speyside, George McNeil said: “Our 25th anniversary continues where we showcase the very best of the region’s food and drink scene in one venue. Following record ticket sales for the Festival in May, this is now a chance for us to profile some of the globally renowned distilleries alongside hand-crafted companies creating small-batch products where together, they show the diversity of Speyside produce.”

TICKET INFORMATION

Tickets for Distilled 2024 are now on sale at £35. All tickets include a Glencairn Crystal glass with lanyard. The Premium Pass is £60 and The Connoisseur Pass which is limited to 30 seats only per sessions, starts at £75.

Decluttering Outdoors

As we enjoy the warmth of the summer months, we can move outdoors to do our decluttering as it is much more pleasant to attack the shed, garden and garage when there is less risk of our fingers falling off with cold!

Before you start, check in with your vision for your outdoor spaces. How would you like your garage/shed/ garden to look? What do you actually want to store in these areas? How do you want to use these areas?

Many garages and outdoor spaces that I go into are full to bursting, so you may need to choose a good weather day to pull everything out so that you can put it into categories. For example categories such as tools, decorating equipment,

outdoor toys, gardening equipment and so on. Have a look at each category and see how many of each item you have. Is it the right amount? Remember, decluttering is not about letting everything go, but about keeping the right number of things to support you. If you live in a serviced apartment in the city, your tool needs will be far fewer than if you live in a large rural property. If you are someone who always calls a handy man in, you will need fewer tools than the handy man who is always called in!

Many of the items stored outside of the home will be more practical than beautiful, but practical items definitely have a place in our lives –you may or may not love that screwdriver, but you will love how it stops you breaking a knife when you try to use one to loosen a screw instead. Practical things have a tendency to proliferate because, even if they don’t use them, people don’t want to let them go for fear that it might be a waste. Think on this point though; what could be more of a waste than things that are left to moulder or rust in a cupboard because they are not being used? So before you worry

Images: Laura Walter Photography

about letting something go because it is a waste, consider how much you use it, and also whether or not you could borrow it from someone if you suddenly needed it.

There are many groups that will take excess tools off your hands, such as Mens’ sheds and places like schools may take gardening equipment for clubs. If you have any large garden toys in good condition, then try your local nursery. Destiny Partnership, a local social enterprise, will take any electrical equipment, regardless of whether it works or not. Failing finding a home such as these, remember that even being recycled is a good next step for many things.

If you are discarding paint (and you’d be surprised how quickly paint goes “off” and needs discarding), then check whether or not your local recycling centre takes it as sometimes it needs to be taken to a specialised centre. For more ideas on where to donate and recycle stuff, do head over to my website and look under the “Sustainability” tab.

Once you have decided what to keep, check that it is in good order. A while back, I was decorating my utility room and I was cursing the quality of the paint that I was using, until I switched paint brushes and realised that the paint was fine, it was the brush that was the issue. Even though it had been properly cleaned when I had last used it, it was getting past its useful life and needed replacing. Ensure that the equipment is clean and if anything needs mending or sharpening, then investigate how and where that can be done.

Once the decluttering side of this is done, have a think about the organising. The most useful

outside spaces that I have come across are not always the most beautiful, but they are well thought out. Storing like with like is hugely beneficial for being able to find things later and being able to find things means that you won’t waste money replacing the things that you already have.

I use zones in my own garage, so I have a zone for DIY, a zone for things for the car, a zone for outdoor toys and so on. Within the zones, I store things on good quality shelving and make use of decent storage boxes. For example, within the DIY zone, I have a large box with all the painting and decorating equipment in it and anytime that I need to paint, I know that it is all there. The box is stored near the paints and the tools.

I hope that this was helpful – I do love to hear from people who have put some of these ideas in to practice, so drop me a line! Visit: www.thetidycoo.com

GARDENING

Make your garden a place to relax this autumn

As we move into late summer, it’s always great to enjoy our gardens and the hard work that we’ve put in over the last few months. There should certainly be plenty of beautiful flowers and plants to enjoy but have you ever thought about dressing your garden?

Here are our top ideas of things to add to your outdoor space and add to your overall alfresco experience.

Dress Your Garden this Autumn

Go Solar and add character to your garden, no matter the size! Create a magical experience when sitting out in the evenings - Solar lights are

a great and cost effective way to transform your pathways, borders, trees and fencing.

Add Garden Accessories and create a relaxing and peaceful area in your garden by installing a water feature, wind-chimes, wind-spinner or outdoor ornament as a focal point for you and your family to enjoy during the late summer evenings.

Invest in a Chiminea or Firepit, the perfect solution for autumn evenings, as you enjoy sitting out in your outdoor space as the sun goes down. A paved area works well where your chiminea or fire pit can co-ordinate with your outdoor furniture.

Create a Wildlife Haven and attract wildlife to your garden by installing bird feeders and adding a birdbath to your outdoor space you’ll soon have many feathered friends lining up to take a splash!

Plant some Autumn Magic Autumn is the perfect time to plant some fabulous colour with some late flowering perennials, as well as an excellent time to be planting fruit trees, bushes and spring bulbs in your garden. Filling your garden with vibrant colour will add fresh excitement to your autumn displays by including a selection of seasonal stunners to flower beds and patio pots.

Great Autumn performers include; Japanese anemones, Cyclamen, Sedum, Autumn Aster, Verbena, Echinacea and Rudbeckia, globe thistle, Eryngium, agapanthus and ornamental grasses.

Get Fruity This Autumn

In autumn the ground is moist but still warm which means that tree roots will grow quickly to establish the plants in the ground. Planting now also means that there is more chance of getting a better crop of fruit in the first season.

Plant Your Spring Bulbs

Autumn is the perfect time of year to plant your bulbs for next Spring, while the soil is still warm. Even the most inexperienced or novice gardener can get involved and it’s a cheap and costeffective way of getting lots of fabulous colour

SEDUM
FIRE PITS

into your garden from early in the year right through to Summer.

Plant straight into the soil, or plant into containers - this way you won’t forget where you've planted your bulbs!

Top 5 Gardening Tips for Autumn

• Continue to deadhead flowering plants to ensure continued flowering

• Water tubs and new plants with grey recycled water where possible –especially after any long periods of dry weather.

• Harvest vegetables as they become ready and lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners

“There’s so much to think about when you’re having a baby. You have to research to know what type of birth you might want to consider, you need to know your rights and understand the evidence for and against medical intervention. There is so much data to think about.” -

This first time mum was right, but she was also overlooking a crucial point.

You need to prepare your mind emotionally for the arrival of a baby, and you need to remember that for the best possible chance of a straightforward vaginal birth (if that’s what you want) you need to feel safe and as relaxed as possible. If you are caught up in anxiety provoking conversations in your head, you are fuelling the fear-tension-pain cycle which will make your whole labour and birth experience more uncomfortable; it’s a fact backed by science and physiology.

Giving birth is not an intellectual process. Giving birth is not about point scoring or challenging your caregivers; listen to them, talk to them and make an informed choice that will best support you and your baby.

Your final few weeks before labour will be best spent nesting, practising your relaxation techniques, preparing your heart and your home for the arrival of your little one, and imagining yourself using the techniques you’ve learnt during labour.

Decide to let labour be about love; it’s the only time you will ever get to birth this baby. Every new parent I have ever worked with wants to welcome their baby into the world with loving arms and a smile; that doesn’t come from stressing about the possibility of intervention or whether you will like your midwife.

Midwives are people, most of the time my Mums tell me that their midwife was an angel; yours could be too.

If you genuinely want to increase your chances of a straightforward vaginal birth understand the range of options and what your preferences would be, and then focus on learning your breathing techniques, on building your mental strength and focusing on the type of birth that you want.

Do your research, know your likely options based on your personal circumstances, plan your optimal birth, and consider what your second or third ‘best birth’ might look like, then drop into your heart and your body and STOP analysing.

Ideally your birth partner will be with you to advocate for you based on the birth plan you have put together. It is their role to make sure you feel safe, nurtured and supported.

Let labour be about love.

In the heart of Speyside, beautiful Aberlour is just the place to come and relax in the hands of our professional therapists.

Why not mix a couple of treatments together? Perhaps a lash lift to complement a new hair style, or a luxury manicure and pedicure to make sure you’re top-to-toe gorgeous!

Moray School Bank visits Destiny Garden School, Mombasa

On June 8th, 2024, Moray School Bank embarked on its very first volunteering trip overseas. Three adults and seven young people flew to Mombasa, Kenya to volunteer with Destiny Garden School (DGS) on the outskirts of the city, in an area called Likoni. The team had been fundraising for around nine months to make the trip happen and had gathered 270kg of donations for the school, including football kit, sports training kit, books, crafts, stationary etc.

They arrived at the school to a musical reception, where the children welcomed them with singing and dancing their song ‘Jambo Bwana’, which the team had learned before they left so they were able to join in. They said, “It was a delight to see them all laughing and having fun”. They were welcomed with open arms into the school community and were given a tour of the school2 grounds.

Destiny Garden School is a small school in a very poor area of Mombasa and many of the children are orphans or live with family members. The

local area has an unemployment rate of 90% and many families live from day to day to survive. The children at the school are sponsored and access their education through support from a small UK charity (Destiny Children) that sends 100% of the sponsored funds to Kenya to help the children. They are all given a hot meal at school, which for many is the only meal they will get that day. The team ate lunch at the school every day they were there and said “it was lovely to see the children enjoying their food”.

While at the school the team played games, read books, did arts and crafts, took part in

classes, played football and rounders, face painted and much, much more. It was a really fun trip, allowing the team to spend quality time with children and learn about DGS and education in Kenya.

Debi Weir, Founder of Moray School Bank said, “There were too many moments that made us smile to choose a favourite, but it was special sitting in the field colouring in Moray School Bank pictures with the children, which they loved”.

The team joined the school football teams as they took part in a local football tournament, cheering them on from the sidelines. They didn’t win this time, but the volunteering team clubbed together and purchased new football kits for the girls’ team and a trophy so they could have a football tournament of their own. They had also fundraised £5000 to create a football field for DGS, which was finished when they arrived.

The volunteers had an amazing experience, getting to know the children, building relationships and making friends for life. Kyle and Hannah both said, “We can’t wait to come back, and we have signed up to be sponsors, it was great to meet the children we will be helping when we get home”.

After ten days of fun, the team had to say their goodbyes, there were lots of tears from the team and the children, as we had our last day of fun! The MSB team delivered a session about Scotland, including teaching the children Highland Dancing and how to sing ‘Donald where’s your troosers!’ Then we danced the afternoon away with lots of fun and lollipops, a firm favourite with the children.

Hakuna Matata from Kenya

Destiny Garden School relies solely on the support of Destiny Children in the UK and their generous sponsors from across the world. Destiny Children need the help of new sponsors to continue their efforts to provide education in Kenya. Moray’s Suicide Prevention Awareness Week Four ‘Walk of Hope’ events

Moray will host four free ‘Walk of Hope’ events this September – Speyside on the 7th, Elgin, Cooper Park 8th, Cullen/Buckie 13th and Findhorn Beach 14th.

Aiming to bring a positive approach to suicide awareness, the events provide an opportunity to remember those lost to suicide, express solidarity to those living with suicidal thoughts, and raise awareness in an inclusive way. Walks start at dawn and we will walk into the sunrise.

The events, hosted by local social movement for change Moray Wellbeing Hub, is just one of a range of events that members of the North East Suicide Prevention Working Group have organised for Suicide Awareness Week.

“Last year we had lots of people join us, aged from 7 to 70, plus a few friendly dogs. People enjoyed the community approach, there were tears as well as laughter…shared stories as well as silence.” Explains Moray Wellbeing Hub Social Movement & Enterprise Lead Heidi Tweedie.

People walked for a time, gently chatting and sharing, pausing to write in the sand or on stones, names as well as words that shared what they were thinking about at this time. “I loved being able to do something with others, showing hope and that no-one is alone. I especially loved the writing in the sand activity.”

The optional sharing included stories of loss as well as hope from those living with suicidal thoughts, from those family members left behind after suicide, and the sharing helped others to do so as well as hold space for silent reflection. A minute’s silence at dawn was observed and the sense of connection was powerful.

“This year we hope many more people can join us to see the dawn and give hope around a subject that is painful and still too often taboo.” Continues Heidi.

The theme for World Suicide Day 2024, as set by the International Association for Suicide Prevention is ‘Change the Narrative’. A theme that links strongly with Moray Wellbeing Hub’s ongoing project work determined to challenge the stigma and discrimination around mental health.

If you are concerned about your own challenging thoughts or want to be prepared to support someone you care about, a local app is available to support with all the links including how to create a safe plan. This can be downloaded from www.preventsuicideapp.com

Walks of hope are made possible through funding by the National Lottery Community Fund - Improving Lives

KEIRANS LEGACY

Keirans Legacy was established by Sandra and Gordon McKandie after the tragic loss of their sixteen-year-old son Keiran, following an accident with a car whilst out riding his bike in March 2016.

When someone suffers a life-threatening incident, help is needed immediately, and every second is precious. Sadly, this help wasn’t available for Keiran and Sandra and Gordon vowed to change current practice in Keiran’s name to honour him, and ensure no other family suffered as they have.

Since setting up Keirans Legacy at least twenty lives have been saved.

Over 270 defibrillators have been distributed. Every fast response vehicle in Scotland was donated a defibrillator in September 2022.

Training delivered means that now over two thousand people know how to save a life.

Keirans Legacy has many long term aims, one of which is to provide defibrillators and training to schools, community and sporting facilities.

They also intend to provide practical hands-on sessions on how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR.

FACTS

• Cardiac Arrest is the third leading cause of death

• Up to 200 people a day suffer a cardiac arrest in the UK

• Less than 1 in 10 victims survive

• Chance of survival decreases by 10% every minute

• Early CPR and defibrillation give the best chance of survival

Learn CPR and know where your local defibrillators are situated and help save a life.

Many people have their own story to tell of how a defibrillator and someone being there and able to administer CPR, was critical to their survival.

My story doesn’t have that happy ending but I still feel that it is important to share it.

On the 19th January 2024, completely out of the blue, my partner Dod collapsed. My son and his fiancée were thankfully with me in the house. We immediately called 999 and were instructed by the ambulance control to start CPR and I sent David and Sally to Newmill Hall for the defibrillator. The ambulance control will tell you where the nearest defibrillator is if you don’t know.

We have had a defibrillator in Newmill for a number of years now, thanks to Keirans Legacy who regularly check and maintain it. They thankfully returned with the defibrillator within a few minutes.

Once you switch it on, the defibrillator speaks to you and gives you clear instructions on what to do. It will not allow you to deliver a shock to someone if it is not appropriate. Keep delivering CPR while you are preparing the defibrillator and then it will tell you when to stop and start CPR again.

We continued to administer CPR and delivered a couple of shocks to Dod before the first ambulance arrived, soon after followed by a second.

We continued CPR until the paramedics were able to take over and then we left them to it.

The paramedics were very complimentary to us all, saying how well we had done delivering good CPR and having been able to source the defibrillator.

We had certainly done everything possible to give Dod the best chance. Dod did make it to Dr Gray’s and then after having thrombolysis there he was blue lighted to Aberdeen.

Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, on the 25th January Dod passed away with all his family at his side.

I wanted to share this story not to say it was a waste of time giving CPR etc but to express to everyone that you never know when this could happen to you.

Everyone said to me while Dod was in hospital, he was so lucky I knew how to give CPR and how to use the defibrillator.

ANYONE CAN USE A DEFIBRILLATOR!!!! The defibrillator tells you what to do and if you don’t know how to give CPR then please go and find out. But I’m sure you’ve all seen it on the telly and if this situation happens to you tomorrow before you have been to find out, then at least give it a go. The worst thing you can do in this kind of situation is to do nothing. People say I’m feart I’d do it wrong or hurt them! If you do nothing THEY WILL DIE!

If we had waited for the ambulance Dod would have died in the house that night. Yes, I know the final outcome was the same but we know we did everything humanly possible and gave him every chance.

I hope it never happens to you but, if it does, don’t end up living with regret that you didn’t try.

Aberdeenshire Saxophone Orchestra:

Just what it says on the tin?

Well, yes, we did start in Aberdeenshire, we do all play saxophones and we are an orchestra. There is a lot more to us than that though!

Aberdeenshire - certainly Aberdeenshire is well represented in our membership who come from all corners of the Shire even from as far away as Braemar.

As our fame has grown, so have our boundaries and we now have members from Glasgow, Perth, Tayside, Moray and Nairn. We even have visiting members from London and Strathpeffer!

Because we hold our rehearsals on one full day per month on a Sunday, these extended journeys are possible and worthwhile.

Saxophone - yes, certainly, we do all play saxophone. Not all saxophones are created equal though, the sizes range from tiny to enormous and the sound range is equally enormous.

We produce the effect of a truly orchestral range of instruments.

Which leads us to the third part of the equation - Orchestra.

Whoever heard of an orchestra composed entirely of saxophones?

Aberdeenshire Saxophone Orchestra playing at a charity event in June.
Images by David Gordon

Well, we are the only one in Scotland and there are only two in England.

It’s this that makes us special and why people are willing to travel big distances to be members.

Saxophones don’t get much chance to play orchestral music; In our opinion it sounds amazing so we do lots of it but also cover the more familiar jazz and swing, as well as any other style of music you can think of.

We’re so much more even than the sum of all these parts though.

We are a lovely, happy community of musicians of all ages, and we make a point of welcoming players with a wide range of abilities. Among our numbers are young players who have just gained a grade 3 standard up to saxophone tutors with masters degrees.

Our members are encouraged to increase their playing skills by attending the technique workshops that we provide.

These are even open to non-members.

Membership and all workshops are free to those under 16 or still in full-time education.

This is part of the reason that we are a charity (Scottish Charity SC049599).

We also help charity fundraisers by offering our services free apart from a share of the proceeds.

On June 1st & 2nd this year we played six mini concerts for various fundraising events from Keith to Beildside.

Writing with dedication and performing with conviction, The Zebecks have established themselves as a frontrunner on the Glasgow grassroots scene. Originally from Elgin in the north of Scotland, they left their small-town lives behind and moved to the city, hungry for musical success. The band are quickly proving to be a formidable force in Scottish music, having performed at sold out shows with the likes of Been Stellar, Declan Welsh and the Decadent West, Parliamo, and SLIX. Their songs tell an introspective tale of navigating life as young Scots in a culture of toxicity, alcoholism, and mental health issues; one which often entwines itself with an endearing national pride that is rarely brought into question. Expect to hear the voice of the highlands grounded in the indiepunk soundscape of Glasgow.

The Zebecks are Dan Thomson (vocals/guitar), Hayden Peace (vocals/guitar), Max Robertson (bass), and Aiden Smith (drums).

Their latest single Roseisle, released back in June, explores a new avenue of their sound, taking the traditional folk music of their native Scotland into the modern era – a canvas for the two vocalists Dan Thomson and Hayden Peace to sing in cathartic release about the value found in human connection. A moving take on youth, life, and death, grounded in references to Scottish culture, Roseisle juxtaposes both naivety and maturity with the two narrative voices which offer their hand to the listener and take them into a rhythmic ceilidh dance on the beaches of the Moray coast. It tells a tale of travelling home (the title refers to a coastal area near the band’s hometown of Elgin) at the end of life to ‘die so meaninglessly’.

Speaking on the new single, Thomson states that “as a band who, as teenagers, collectively migrated away from our hometown to find meaning in a pursuit of music – this song is our most personal one yet. It invites the listener to share with us, in a fleeting moment of nostalgia, thoughts of their own home and to resonate with the feeling of wanting to return there someday when life has settled down.”
