hen my kids "discovered" vinyl, their lives changed. All three now have turntables and are building their own collections. Cool. Sound familiar? What was your first album? I had four much older brothers, teenage rebels in the late 60s and 70s. We had crates and crates full of records in our rec room. The turntable was off-limits The Sony Walkman. to the little sisters, but when the boys went away to college or to The Discman. The find themselves, we girls commandeered that rec room and made cassette and 8-track it our own. We danced, set up forts, spread out our Barbies and players. Now, it's all in my phone! hosted Scout meetings and epic sleepovers. While we missed our sweet brothers dearly, there was something magical about being in that room listening to records through heavy headphones. I played Carol King (Tapestry was my first album, purchased at Melody Records with babysitting money) and borrowed a Peter Frampton album from the girl next door. My brothers left behind Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Ramsey Lewis and The Who. Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite" and Respighi's "Pines of Rome" were on the shelves and I would listen, transported to a higher place far, far away -- as far away as a 13-year-old girl in suburban Detroit could imagine. Music has that power, doesn't it? I'm a huge fan of Spotify and lisA FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS ten to their New Music Friday station (TO LISTEN TO) and, if I'm lucky, find one title to add Back To The World to a playlist in my library. More often, I Tevin Campbell hit "browse" and find a genre or mood Wanna Be Happy? (chill, mood booster, workout...) and Kirk Franklin settle into a task. Moody's Mood for Love

Four Steps to Take After A
CAR WRECK ARTICLE JUSTIN WILLIAMS
DiD you know? Your favorite
Lifestyle Publication is on facebook!
I
f you are in the unfortunate position of being injured in a vehicle collision, this article provides the first four steps we should all take to ensure the car accident is handled properly. First, immediately after the accident occurs, call 911 for the police. Even if you believe it would be unnecessary to call the police to report the accident scene, call the police regardless, because the at-fault driver may not keep their promise of fixing your vehicle’s damage. Furthermore, the at-fault driver may not have current auto insurance despite showing you their insurance card, because the information on the insurance card is as old as the card itself and is not real time information. Secondly, if you are feeling any pain or discomfort, be sure to request that an ambulance arrive at the scene to transport you to a local emergency room to be checked out. With the level of adrenaline someone feels just after a car wreck, it is easy to think you are fine and there is no need for any further medical attention. However, you could have damage to your neck or back or you may have internal bleeding that is undetectable without medical attention. Do not be concerned with the cost of your medical treatment, because the insurance company for the at-fault driver will provide compensation for your medical bills. Thirdly, seek subsequent medical treatment if recommended or you are still in pain. The most important consideration after a car wreck is your health. Take care of yourself by receiving the proper medical attention for your injuries. Finally, contact an experienced personal injury lawyer who you are comfortable with and will fight for you to achieve the best result your case deserves.

Cancer Survivor Serves As Ambassador APRIL 30 HOPE BALL HONORS, GIVES HOPE ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
A
s the official sponsor of birthdays, the American Cancer Society is proud to say that nearly 14 million cancer survivors are celebrating their special day again this year. And, here in Atlanta, we will be honoring local survivors, philanthropists and volunteers at the 2016 Hope Ball on April 30. Lifestyle Publications is proud to serve as media sponsor for this evening of stories, fellowship and hope, along with event chair sponsor Delta Airlines. But, it’s the people here on the ground in Buckhead that are making admirable strides in education and research with their support and generous fundraising. Frank Argenbright is chairman and CEO at SecurAmerica in Buckhead and is a breast cancer survivor, serving on the Board of Ambassadors for the American Cancer Society. “I am honored to be working for such a worthy cause. And as a cancer survivor, I want to do whatever it takes to help raise as much money as we can for cancer research. The more research, the more lives we can save,” says Argenbright, who lives with his wife, Kathy, and their children, Hunter and Blythe, on Brookhaven Drive. The ACS Board of Ambassadors is an elite group of high-level executives and philanthropists who have pledged to lead and financially support ACS distinguished events like The Hope Ball. Argenbright and his fellow Ambassadors will support honoree, Buckhead resident Jeff Wigbels, a stage-four, non-smokers lung cancer survivor. “His story is remarkable and incredibly moving and inspirational. His tireless support for cancer research and treatment should lift us all to do whatever we can to ensure we eradicate this disease,” notes Argenbright. (Readers may remember our story on Jeff in the January 2015 issue and will become reacquainted with him as we bring you more details on the Hope Ball next month.) Frank A. Argenbright, Jr. was raised in Madison, Florida, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from Florida State University. He was previously in the Army Reserves, earning the rank of Captain. He graduated in 1991 from the Owner/ President Management Program at Harvard Business School. Argenbright heads SecurAmerica, a rapidly growing security company that provides innovative contract security service solutions. Today, he is focused on SecurAmerica, which he started in 2005 as a sister company to AirServ. A famously hard worker who wakes 16

t’s Thursday night, and while most people are unwinding from work or preparing for the weekend, the tone inside Crabapple Baptist Church is focused. All is quiet except for the click of music stands and the shuffle of papers, as the members of Alpharetta Symphony Orchestra make their final adjustments before their next piece begins. In a single wave, conductor Eric Hawk commands the attention of his musicians, and then a swell of sound emerges from the brass, strings, winds and percussion. It’s a sweet symphony of sound, even if it’s just for a weekly rehearsal. Passion reverberates from the Alpharetta Symphony Orchestra, not just through their playing, but through the group’s foundation, director Eric Hawk and his wife (and the group’s pianist and manager) Dawn Dalangin. After living in Columbus and Athens, the couple decided to move to Alpharetta to build their future. Both were nearing
I believed people in Alpharetta would appreciate fresh art and entertainment.” the completion of their doctoral music degrees at University of Georgia: Eric a candidate for orchestral conducting; Dawn a candidate in piano performance. They reasoned, John’s Creek had a professional orchestra, Alpharetta had a band, so why not start a symphony orchestra in Alpharetta? “I believed people in Alpharetta would appreciate fresh art and entertainment,” says Eric about his community. “The city seems to be only in the infancy of its artistic potential.” Dawn was a piano teacher at PianoAlpharetta, and saw that Alpharetta had a high potential for amateur musicians. After outreach to local schools, studios and music teachers, the Alpharetta Symphony Orchestra held their first auditions in September 2014. Twelve musicians, ranging from high school orchestra students to senior citizens who were former players, appeared at the first rehearsal. The instrumentation was perfect for a large chamber ensemble, and thus was born “AlpharettaSO,” as it was deemed. Since its humble beginnings, the AlpharettaSO has grown to more than 25 members for the 2016 season. The goal during the first season was to gain exposure. The orchestra played anywhere they could: church concerts, assisted living homes, the Velvet Note jazz club and at the Taste of Alpharetta Festival. Every concert seemed to be a gateway and after every performance they were welcomed back to perform again. Dawn and Eric have paid for everything out-of-pocket, from the rehearsal venue to the sheet music, website fees and even instruments for members who don’t currently have their own. Through the couple’s generosity, AlpharettaSO is free to members, but in order to financially support its growing needs, the group is applying for non-profit status this year. CONTINUED >
SYMPHONY OF SOUND
(CON TI N U ED)
“I believe that music-making is a privilege and a community has to have the passion and need for supporting the arts,” says Eric. In the future, the hope is to create a professional symphony orchestra in addition to the community group. For now, the group welcomes musicians with a high school level playing ability or higher to join. Rehearsal is every Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Crabapple Baptist Church. “Our members love making music. As a whole, I have seen more dedication with this group than any others I've worked with.” That praise speaks volumes, considering Eric has conducted University of Georgia’s premiere symphony orchestra and the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra. To hear the AlpharettaSO in concert, see them at “River Run” benefit for the Rising Star Equestrian Foundation on April 26 and “Taste of Alpharetta” on May 12. Fuller’s journey in and out of two prior careers helped pave the way for this meteoric rise. “I was inspired to open The Velvet Note when I decided that—no matter what—the next thing I would do with my life would be what makes me personally happy, and for no other reason than that. Not to save the world, not to contribute to society, not to make money, but just because it’s what I love to do.” Part of Fuller’s love lies not only in what she has created, but in where she has created it. Why should North Fulton residents

Part of the magic, she has discovered, is in quality over quantity. “First, we want to become more of an integral part of the unique reasons why people would want to visit and live in Alpharetta. I have visited cities all over the world, and I am a huge fan of the way that Alpharetta is designed, developed and managed. We believe that we can be an attraction that gets more people to appreciate what our unique city has to offer. “Secondly, we want to give music students at the middle school, high school and college level the chance to see the worldclass musical performances of our greatest living icons. We are accomplishing this— in part—through our new live-streaming offerings, and through partnerships with

Tucked into a nondescript strip mall on Old Milton Parkway, The Velvet Note Acoustic Living Room offers something truly extraordinary and powerful: live music as it is meant to be experienced. This intimate venue, replete with a full kitchen and bar, welcomes you like an old friend. All by design, says owner-operator Tamara Fuller: “It just so happens that this is the way that I would be happiest listening to music myself—in my own living room, with music performed by the best musicians on the planet, with great food, great drinks, great ambiance, great acoustics, and the chance to meet and get to know the musicians after the show.” Designed by a protégé of film legend George Lucas, The Velvet Note was crafted

ritt Bass Turner’s work is about process and intuition. “I am interested in the juxtaposition of medium, texture, color and shape. I am ever searching for ways to create subtleties and surprises through fine details and passageways,” she explains in her artist’s statement. Britt grew up in Milton and now lives and works from Roswell. She fell in love with color and design at a young age living with her interior designer mother. “The constant exposure to color and texture helped me to refine my eye for aesthetics and to value creating early on.” She graduated from the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia in 2011 and has been exploring color and design ever since from her studio in Roswell. Her list of shows is long for such a young artist, mostly staged in Georgia, but also reaching into South Carolina, Pennsylvania and New York. Her client list is already impressive and includes West Elm, Land of Nod, Passion City Church and notable local art collectors. Lifestyle Publications’ photographer, Kathryn McCrary introduced us to Britt’s work. The two were at UGA together. “As a photographer, composition in art is really important to me, and Britt effortlessly creates beautiful composition in her paintings. I am creating a new gallery wall in our home and had to have her create a piece for it!” We can’t wait to see what these two artists come up with. We sat down with Britt to find out what inspires this local girl to create gorgeous and contemporary art.

SGC | TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. BBT | I grew up in Milton, went to Crabapple Crossing Elementary,
Northwestern Middle School, and Milton High School. I went to art school at UGA's Lamar Dodd School of Art. My husband and I met in middle school, dated off and on throughout high school and college and married almost three years ago at Alpharetta's Chukkar Farms. Both our families still live in the homes we grew up in! We now live in Roswell and love being close to both the city and our families. Many friends are leaving the city to settle down in Roswell and we are excited to make the northern ‘burbs home again.
SGC | WHY DOES OUR COMMUNITY WORK AS A PLACE FOR YOUR BUSINESS? BBT | The main reason we decided to keep my business here in
“Atlanta,” and not move to a more art-centric metropolitan area, is due entirely to the amazing family, community and network we have here. I am so thankful for my Atlanta home base, and we do most of our business right here, too.

SGC | WHO IS BUYING YOUR ART? BBT | I love finding my work forever homes. Since I have such a
variety of products and price points my clients are just as varied. College girls and young professionals are my largest audience for prints. For small original pieces I sell mostly to first time home buyers and new parents that they are buying their first original art. For large pieces and custom commissions I work with designers, galleries, consulting companies, and everyday collectors across the U.S. and even internationally. In fact we do a large amount of business in Australia and New Zealand which is super fun.

SGC | YOUR WEBSITE, BRITTBASS.COM IS SO USER-FRIENDLY AND INVITING. BBT | Thank you! My website alone accounts for over 50 percent of
my total sales!
SGC | WHAT TIPS CAN YOU GIVE NEW COLLECTORS? BBT | My best advice for people buying art is the advice I give myself
and my friends: buy art that speaks to you and tells a story. What jumps out and grabs you? If you are at a gallery or a website, it's the piece you keep going back to look at again. It's the one you want to know more about, why the artist made it, what it means. Art should represent meaning, spark a memory or story, and be part of a grander collection of our lives. I like to think of my house as my own curatorial project where I have a relationship with every piece of artwork, know who the artist is, where I was when I bought it, who I was with, why this piece stuck out to me, what it looks like to me or means to me. Artwork is unique in the way that we can assign out own memories and meaning to it. BeachBabes 40x40 March 2016 | AlpharettaLifestylePubs.com

MOMS TAKE THE REINS, HELPING SO MANY STUDENTS
Learning to Learn
B
eth Ardell and Susie McDaniel were like so many moms. Their kids were having trouble learning and they couldn’t find the right help. Eventually, they realized that metro Atlanta didn’t have anything that would tackle the core reasons why their kids were struggling — until they heard about LearningRx, which was founded by Dr. Ken Gibson more than 25 years ago. LearningRx is a one-on-one brain training program that target cognitive skills. They opened a center in Buckhead/Sandy Springs in 2008 and an Alpharetta/Johns Creek facility three years later. “Beth and I both went to graduate school to study physical therapy at Emory. We worked together for years, and then our kids started struggling in school. We tried many different ways to help them and then Beth heard about LearningRx,” says Susie. “It was exactly what we were looking for.” Beth’s daughter had a seizure disorder when she was one year old that resulted in significantly low cognitive skills in several areas. Despite Beth’s therapy background, several interventions and extensive school modifications, her daughter fell further behind in school. LearningRx’s methodology and results were the right solution, she says. “I knew she needed this cutting edge, radical way to strengthen her cognition more than anything else. Thankfully I was right, and

her life started to change. She became the best reader in her class and is now able to keep up with her peers both socially and academically.” A Roswell resident, Susie has one child who struggled academically and faced attention issues, as well, which she did not want to medicate. She also has another child who used LearningRx for enhancement reasons. “LearningRx helped both of my kids tremendously,” she says, “and I have not needed to use medication for my son’s early inattentiveness.” She points out that because it is not like traditional tutoring and instead trains certain parts of the brain to permanently enhance learning skills, he’s done better in other parts of his life as well. “It does tend to transfer to other things like sports and music,” she says. “They can understand and remember the football plays or the music better. They tend to keep up with conversations better and get the jokes more. It helps in all aspects of life.” LearningRx is very clear about what separates them other companies that help children learn or supplement their schoolwork. “For the most part, we don’t work on specific academic knowledge, except where it pertains to the decoding or fluency of reading. We are not tutors. We attack the core cognitive issues and processing skills so they can process new information faster and more efficiently,” says Susie, co-owner and director. “We look at short- and long-term
memory, logic and reasoning, auditory and visual processing, executive processing speed, organizational skills and the ability to put things together. We attack the core skills — the reasons why you can’t read or learn like everyone else.” LearningRx offers “brain training.” First they test the child (or adult) to see what they can accomplish, a standardized cognitive skills assessment, and evaluate where their strengths and weaknesses are. After a consultation, they devise a plan of intense specialized mental exercises aimed at specific cognitive weaknesses. A client will work with a brain trainer for an hour a day for 12 to 32 weeks. Think of it as your brain going to the gym with its own personal trainer. “When children first start out, they don’t like these games because they are intense,” says Alix Luce, director of LearningRx Alpharetta. “But after a while, they love it. It changes their whole attitude about learning and being a success, and their confidence skyrockets.” Although every mental exercise is customized, someone behind in math might work on recognizing patterns and logic rather than multiplication tables. “With reading, we often find that the student struggles with the comprehensive component rather than the mechanics,” Susie says. Not all of the children and adults who enroll at LearningRx are diagnosed with specific conditions such as dyslexia, ADHD, or autism. “It’s basically for children and adults who are really
struggling at something and want to do better,” Susie says, “or it’s for anyone who wants a competitive edge in school or the workplace.” “Opening LearningRx has been the best thing I’ve ever done because all of my children’s lives have changed as a result of going through this program,” says Beth. “The opportunities they are now taking advantage of are those we never would have had without the increased cognitive skills they attained after going through this training."
Opening LearningRx has been the best thing I’ve ever done because all of my children’s lives have changed as a result of going through this program.

A New Normal for One Alpharetta Mother IAN'S FRIENDS FOUNDATION LENDS A HAND AND A HEART ARTICLE ELIZABETH HODGES | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
“Y
ou are in for the fight of your life,” were the words that changed Holly York and her life trajectory forever. They were the words uttered by the neurologist confirming that her daughter, Julia, had a lesion on her brain. They were the words that confirmed that the severe headaches Julia had been experiencing were not the result of prepubescent hormones, as Holly believed, but instead a pediatric brain tumor. They were the words that would mobilize a mother of three to believe that she could, and would, move mountains to save her daughter now in for the fight of her life. Holly York was living in John’s Creek and had just started a new job at a nonprofit organization in February 2012. Like many working mothers, Holly spent her time hustling her children to school, sports and various activities while balancing work and life at home. Life seemed normal despite the busyness that characterized their daily lives. It was for this reason that Holly thought little of her daughter’s reoccurring headaches, but when they became debilitating two days after Julia’s 12th birthday, Holly knew something wasn’t right. Initially, Julia’s MRI was supposed to rule out anything unusual. In fact the procedure was just the start of Holly’s worst nightmare as she recalls the radiologist handing Julia a teddy bear and ordering Holly and her husband to go immediately to the neurologist. Holly vividly recalls the shock and debilitating fear when the doctor informed them that Julia had a lesion on her brain stem. Compounding the news was the concern other neurosurgeons they spoke with had about attempting to biopsy the tumor, let alone remove it, due to its location. In an instant, Julia went from being an active middle schooler, to a child with a pediatric brain tumor and an uncertain future. Within days of her diagnosis, Julia began radiation treatments at Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute. Holly felt like she was on a rollercoaster as she navigated the frightening

To do this, IFF partners with, or supports, research labs at leading hospitals around the country focused on the development of new treatments for pediatric brain tumors. IFF also offered Holly and her husband something that was in short supply – hope. Throughout Julia’s radiation treatment, doctors at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (working with funding from Ian’s Friends Foundation) searched for other clinical and surgical options to prolong Julia’s life. he impact the prestigious German automaker Porsche has made on Georgia's capital has been tremendous within the last year. Beginning with the erection of Hapeville’s Porsche Driving Experience and headquarters in May of 2015, the grand opening of the jaw-dropping Jim Ellis Porsche Dealership on December 3 soon followed, further planting the flag bearing the automaker's signature stallion and crest on Atlanta’s grounds. Located on the city’s I-285 perimeter at 4006 Carver Drive, Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, this space-age, multi-level, 44,000-square-foot site boasts a curvaceous exterior maintaining Porsche’s avant-garde architectural approach like their world-renowned Stuttgart, Germany, museum. Once inside, customers are exposed to extraordinary amenities geared to have them leave enlightened, fulfilled, refreshed, and ideally in a glistening Porsche to call their own. Center, an onsite Golf Simulator complete with house clubs, a video wall, and a café pouring Starbucks coffee, these are just a few features adorning the Perimeter’s 18-car showroom. “We’ve grown along with metro Atlanta and our Porsche customers over the past 33 years,” says Rodney Woods, vice president at Jim Ellis Automotive Group. “When we opened our new state-of-the-art Porsche dealership in December, it was the perfect time to showcase our new name of Porsche Atlanta Perimeter to reflect our growth in the Atlanta community. Even though we have a new name and a new dealership, we still provide the level of customer experience that our clients have come to expect from the Jim Ellis family.” Addressing the dealership’s ambitions for 2016, the team is excited to debut the all-new 911 in the spring, the new 718 Cayman and Boxster in the summer, and punctuating the year's end with an exclamation mark by launching the redesigned Panamera. Porsche’s successful answer to
the booming luxury compact SUV segment—the Macan—also has two new versions set to launch this year; the Jim Ellis Family expects it to replace the Cayenne as the most popular model on the floor. Ultimately, topping 1,000 new Porsche sales and 1,100 pre-owned Porsche sales are both very realistic goals. The Jim Ellis Automotive Group maintains its commitment to invest in the city of Atlanta, and believes driving one of Porsche’s fine-crafted vessels of its’ Porsche Atlanta Perimeter is the optimal way to explore it. Playlists From The Modern Girl WORDS MOLLY S. COLLINS
<<< The writer, in her dorm room at Albion College

rowing up, my parents never played the top 40 station as we drove to and fro in our iconic blue mini van. My dad strictly played “80s on 8” and “70s on 7” while my mom played the sinful sounds of Motown and Jill Scott. So, I've never have the same taste for popular music as my peers. When friends would ask me to make a playlist for a party, I would fill it with The Ramones, The Supremes, Television and Paul Simon, rather than the usual Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande. Even though my music would often be shut down within the third or fourth song, it felt so good to look up and see a few friends sway to the sounds of the past in appreciation. This playlist was made for anyone who needs to be reawakened via my favorite bands, and see the world through a new set of barre chords.
1. "CLOSE TO ME" - THE CURE
5. "FUNN" - CASH+DAVID
The Cure is one of my favorite bands out of the 80s, embodying two things I think that era is known for: crazy hair, and, sometimes, overly emotional songs. With vinyl records making a song comeback, I believe that this band is a quintessential component on any playlist. If you like this song, you'll also like “Sunday Morning” by No Doubt.
Cash+David is made up of two wildly talented artists who mix both of their electronic and indie backgrounds to make one extremely entertaining record. This song, along with others, has stellar guitar and fun beats that, no matter who the listener, make you want to tap your foot. If you like this song, then you’ll like “Take My Picture” by Filter.
2. "IS THIS HOW YOU FEEL?" - THE PREATURES
The Preatures is a 5-piece Aussie band that continues to impress me as I listen to their upbeat and head-bopping album. Released last year, this album has a 70s rock element to it, and makes me want to roll down all the windows and blast it while driving down the highway on a bright summer's day. Great song. Great band. Great everything. If you like this song, you'll like “Don't Save Me” by Haim. 3. "MESSED UP KIDS" - JAKE BUGG
6. "FALLOUT" - CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN
No playlist would be complete without a song by one of the best up-and-coming bands of 2016, Catfish and the Bottlemen. I've listened to this album on every medium I can get my hands on, and everytime I hear it I get knots in my stomach because that's how good it is. Mixing a little bit of punk, rock, alternative and everything in between, this band never ceases to amaze me. If you like this song, then you’ll like “If You Wanna” by The Vaccines.
One of my favorite artists of all time, Jake Bugg sounds, to me, like the product of Paul McCartney and Michael Kiwanuka. Mixing McCartney’s smooth vocals, and Kiwanuka’s soulful acoustics, every song on Bugg’s new album (appropriately named Shangri La) is utter perfection and tells a story that everyone should listen too. If you like this song, you'll like “Sixteen” by Bombay Bicycle Club.
7. "LA VERITE" - FRANCOIS & THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS
4. "DRIVE" - OH WONDER
8. "OPEN HOUSE" - BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB
I heard of Oh Wonder while looking for songs to listen to while shut up in the library during finals week, and I can solidly say that their soothing synchronized vocals are the single most important attribute for my success over the hellish week. Oh Wonder’s debut album consists of every aspect one needs to have a great band: meaningful lyrics, great vocals and simple instrumentation. If you like this song, then you’ll like “I’ll Try Anything Once” by Julian Casablancas.
If you ever find yourself in an adventurous mood, listen to any of Bombay Bicycle Club’s albums and let the wanderlust wash over you as you listen to the musical stylings of Britain's finest. If you like this song, you’ll like “Archie, Marry Me” by Alvvays.

Lately, I've been on a bit of a french pop craze. Francois & The Atlas Mountains have great upbeat songs that you don't mind not understanding because you're too busy being entranced by the melodic piano and sinful hodge podge percussion instruments. If you like this song, you’ll like “Tous Les Memes” by Stromae.
