As we welcome the vibrant month of April, we invite you to explore our theme of investment in this edition of Short Pump City Lifestyle! Investment is a powerful concept that extends far beyond financial endeavors; it encompasses our health, relationships, and overall well-being. In a world that often prioritizes immediate gratification, we encourage you to cultivate a mindset focused on long-term growth and fulfillment.
When we think of investments, financial assets often come to mind—stocks, real estate, or retirement accounts-even tax preparation and planning. Yet, the most valuable investments we can make lie in nurturing our health and wellness. Prioritizing physical fitness, mental health, and self-care can yield profound benefits, enhancing our quality of life and longevity. Consider investing time in regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and mindfulness practices. These choices not only enrich our personal lives but also empower us to contribute positively to our communities.
Moreover, investing in our relationships is equally crucial. The connections we cultivate with family, friends, and colleagues can profoundly impact our happiness and sense of belonging. By dedicating time and energy to nurture these relationships, we create a support network that will uplift us through life’s challenges. Engage in meaningful conversations, celebrate milestones, and express appreciation for those around you. These small gestures can lead to monumental changes in our social landscape.
As you turn the pages of this month’s issue, you will discover inspiring stories and practical insights on various investment strategies—from financial literacy to fostering wellness and strengthening bonds. Let these articles serve as a catalyst for your own journey of investment. Remember, every effort you make today can yield extraordinary returns tomorrow.
Invest in yourself, your health, and your relationships, and watch as the dividends of joy, fulfillment, and prosperity flow into your life. Together, let’s embark on a journey of growth and enrichment, making thoughtful investments that will shape our community for years to come.
Gratefully,
April 2025

March 15, 2020. The last day of the “Before Time”. In the days coming after, companies would send their employees home, schools would close, flights would be canceled, stay-at-home orders would be made - ‘for a few weeks at most’.
Whether it was a job, a relationship, a living situation - Covid changed a lot of people. At the same time wellness exploded into a multi-billion dollar industry. In the years after, as covid started dying down, people began looking for relief, for community, and avenues for healing.
In the fall of 2023, I got a download. While at the grocery store, I suddenly saw an image in my head; an event full of people, where group classes were being held, with a separate stage for presentations, vendors selling holistic products, and live local music playing all day. Proudly alcohol-free. Then a voice told me the time of year and who to include and then, just like Kevin Costner in the classic 90’s movie ‘Field of Dreams’, I heard clearly ‘if you build it, they will come.’
I envisioned a celebration of *local* wellness, a platform for alternative voices to share legitimate practice methods to those living in their area; not some big name flown in from a different coast or country. There is enough incredible, authentic, and intentional talent already in humble service to this city and its people, more than capable of providing compelling expertise, leading group classes, selling their products, or showcasing their musical talent. Why not put together an entire day where they can all come together?
In 2021, near the start of (another spiral of) my journey, I discovered that it took a lot of legwork to find the wellness community in Richmond. There were so many offerings - yoga, acupuncture, reiki, sensory-deprivation tanks, breathwork, authentic relating, SUP sound baths, Full Moon sound baths, drum circles, etc. - but no central place to find out where and when they were. Someone had to be constantly scrolling and following the right accounts to see what was going on. I figured there must be other people doing the same but ultimately giving up. There was incredible pain out there; tragic family loss, virtual schools, Zoom, hospitals overflowing, social distancing, protests... we have collectively been through some true challenges in the last 5 years.
“I ENVISIONED A CELEBRATION OF *LOCAL* WELLNESS, A PLATFORM FOR ALTERNATIVE VOICES TO SHARE LEGITIMATE PRACTICE METHODS TO THOSE LIVING IN THEIR AREA; NOT SOME BIG NAME FLOWN IN FROM A DIFFERENT COAST OR COUNTRY.”
I settled on the name Rest Fest and set about combining Richmond’s exceptional wellness talent with those in search of their services. And then it happened: the inaugural Rest Fest occurred on May 4, 2024 at the Cardinal in Moseley, VA.
Ultimately 110 people trusted me and the other volunteers (shoutout to Melanie Glick and Daniel Klein, among many others) to support and celebrate this day of wellness. There were 7 group classes featuring sound baths, yoga, transformational breathwork, among others. Presentations included ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, shadow work, and a discussion panel on responsible plant medicine integration. Vendors sold their wares to those holding yoga mats and NA cocktails were poured. The day was cool and misty like Mt. Hood, Oregon. The place held the relaxed air of a retreat and a festival put together.
On April 26 and 27, Rest Fest will happen again at the same beautiful venue. This time it will expand across an entire weekend in the Spring; the season of renewal, of birth, of cathartic metamorphosis. The true start of the year. Holy River and Big Fancy will headline a night of music on Saturday. Group classes will be held in a tent on the lawn in the shadow of a massive oak. And again, like last year, some of Richmond’s finest local talent will come together in community to share and be seen, to hold and be held, as we all find rest and restoration.
This is a volunteer-run event by passionate people like myself, Lindsay Hess (thank you Tilt Creative + Production!), Melanie Glick, Daniel Klein, and many others giving their time and talent over the last year to make this happen because they believe in this event, in Richmond, its people, and the power of healing in community.
Ticket cost transparency: local businesses have generously provided financial support to cover the logistical costs of Rest Fest 2025. Ticket revenue will be split among the volunteer staff and other supporters who helped birth Rest Fest 2025 over the last year.
Tickets are on sale now at rvarestfest.com Instagram: @rva.restfest
$177 for a weekend pass, $99 for single day passes. 2-ticket packs also available.

Avery Nicholas Walls was born November 6, 2002 at MCI hospital in Independence Missouri. Shortly thereafter the hospital was torn down; Avery was a hard act to follow. He was born to parents Gary Shannon Walls and Amber Lynn Walls, who loved him from the first breath to the last. He was burdened early on in life by a rare heart condition called Wolf-Parkinson-White which caused his heart to beat at extremely high rates. He spent many of the first weeks of his life in and out of Children’s Mercy
Hospital in Kansas City. The doctors and nurses there were amazing and loved and cared for him in a way that his parents had never experienced before or since from medical professionals. At the age of 3 ½ he had an ablation surgery to correct his defect, he went in for surgery early in the morning and by 10 PM that evening they discharged him because the hospital could no longer contain him, he was literally bouncing off the walls. For the next 17 years, Avery lived a life that was more full than most. He became
a loving and caring brother to Ethan, Ian and Zachary Walls—he always was there to lend a hand or a hug when they needed that from their big brother. In 2008, Avery moved from Missouri with his family to Virginia. Avery passed away on 9/7/23 at the age of twenty from a heart attack that was unexpected and undeserved.
The Avery Walls Music Festival was born to both support the Walls Family through devastation and to raise awareness and support through the American Heart Association. Avery’s family has felt very humbled by the amazing support from the community of musicians here in River City as well, and they’re grateful that they can honor Avery and give back.
The Avery Walls Music Festival will be held on April 26, 2025 from noon to midnight at The Park RVA and will feature 9 of the area’s most popular bands. Admission is free with all benefits going to the American Heart Association of Virginia. The event will feature not only great local music but also, indoor miniature golf, duckpin bowling, arcade games, raffles, VIP karaoke experience and great food & beverages. There is literally something for everyone and for all ages.
Taking the stage this year for the first time, the Festival is honored to have local Rock Royalty Monkey Fist! If you are familiar with the local music scene, these guys need no introduction!

As we approach the tax season of 2025, it is crucial for individuals and businesses to arm themselves with knowledge and strategies to navigate the complexities of tax filing and planning. Mark Baird of GRS Accounting Solutions discusses common pitfalls, the nuances of deductions, and key strategies for maximizing tax efficiency.
Mark identifies miscalculating taxes when withdrawing from 401(k) plans as a prevalent error. Financial institutions often recommend withholding 20% for federal taxes, but many overlook an additional 5% state tax and a potential 10% penalty for early withdrawals. This oversight can result in receiving only 65% of total proceeds, prompting some to reconsider their withdrawal decisions. Discussing withdrawal reasons with a tax preparer can provide clarity and help avoid penalties.
To reduce tax liability, taxpayers should keep meticulous records, especially if they own side businesses. A common oversight is underestimating mileage; using apps to track miles can ensure accurate claims. Health insurance premiums can be itemized on Schedule A, helping taxpayers exceed the standard deduction threshold. Understanding specific deductions for business owners and how to categorize expenses is vital for optimizing tax returns.
Mark emphasizes that tax deadlines are critical, with S Corporation and Partnership returns due by March 15, and personal and corporate tax returns by April 15. Extensions are available but do not eliminate potential penalties or interest on owed taxes. Understanding the difference between standard and itemized deductions is essential; the standard deduction offers a straightforward reduction in taxable income, while itemized deductions require detailed accounting of eligible expenses, such as medical costs and mortgage interest.
For small business owners, proactive tax planning is essential. Regular consultations with tax advisors can help identify deductible expenses and streamline record-keeping processes. “Simple tools, such as spreadsheets or financial software like Quicken, can assist in tracking income and expenses effectively,” he notes.
Receiving an audit notice can be daunting, but most audits are conducted via letter rather than in-person visits. Taxpayers should gather the requested documentation and avoid providing unnecessary additional information. Ignoring audit letters can lead to complications, making it imperative to maintain open communication with tax preparers. ESSENTIAL INSIGHTS
Mark highlights that working with a tax professional can yield significant benefits compared to filing independently with software. “Professionals provide tailored advice and insights that help taxpayers navigate complex tax situations. Engaging with a tax advisor before the end of the year can lay the groundwork for strategic planning,” he underscores.
Looking ahead to 2025, Mark believes taxpayers should remain vigilant about potential changes in tax legislation. With many existing rules set to sunset, individuals may find themselves filing more on Schedule A and potentially foregoing the standard deduction. Staying informed about these developments is crucial for effective tax planning.
Mark shares that tax-saving strategies should extend beyond tax season. Contributing to retirement plans, especially those with employer matching, can significantly reduce taxable income while providing a solid return on investment. “Regularly reviewing tax situations, especially after life changes, ensures that taxpayers remain prepared and informed,” says Mark.
For taxpayers seeking guidance, consulting with a tax professional is invaluable. While the internet offers a wealth of information, it can also lead to misinformation that complicates tax situations. Trusted resources, particularly those from the IRS, are vital for accurate information.
In conclusion, as we enter the tax season of 2025, Mark emphasizes the importance of understanding critical aspects of tax filing and planning for ensuring compliance and maximizing financial benefits. By staying informed, organized, and proactive, we can navigate the complexities of the tax landscape with confidence. A playful, loving kitten who brings joy, comfort, and adventure to her family
Every so often, a pet comes along who isn’t just a companion but a true hero. This month, we celebrate Sarah Belle—a one-year-old kitten with a heart as big as her fluffy tail.
Sarah’s story begins in 2024, a challenging year for her family. When her human dad was diagnosed with cancer and undergoing weekly chemotherapy, vacations were off the table. Instead, the family turned their hearts to fostering kittens for the SPCA. Enter Sarah—a tiny ball of fur who was too small to be adopted when her siblings found their forever homes. She became the family’s very first foster, and, as all great love stories go, they simply couldn’t let her go.
Sarah Belle isn’t just a kitten—she is a source of joy and comfort. She entertains the family’s three kids with endless games of soccer and chase. She snuggled up with Dad during his recovery and
kept Mom company during late nights. She filled their home with warmth when they needed it most, and now she’s here to stay.
As a permanent family member, Sarah Belle continues to be a playful and loving presence. She adores her cat tree, watching birds and squirrels from her favorite window perch. She greets the kids at the top of the stairs each morning and even joins them at the bus stop—sometimes in a stroller, sometimes in a backpack, always with curiosity. Her favorite toys? A simple bundle of sticks on a stick and bouncy springs she gleefully chases in the bathtub.
A true “mixed breed” cat with a mix of Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat, a plethora of other breeds, and an extra dose of charm, Sarah Belle is proof that sometimes, the best things come in small, furry packages. And this foster fail? The best decision her family ever made.
“
“Sarah Belle isn’t just a kitten—she’s been a source of joy and comfort from the start.”
