SMART PURCHASES THAT LAST
Local and quality investments in your present and future comfort
When my grandmother passed away, my family gathered to sort through her belongings, but there was one thing nobody wanted to part with—her wellworn oak dining table. It had been the centerpiece of our home for decades, its surface marked by years of meals, conversations, and celebrations.
That table wasn’t just furniture. It was a legacy, a piece of history that had stood the test of time.
When you invest in quality pieces, you aren’t just decorating a space—you are curating a home,
preserving a story, and making choices that will last beyond trends and fads. Quality isn’t always about the most expensive option; it’s about craftsmanship, materials, and longevity.
THE SHIFT FROM BESPOKE TO MASS PRODUCTION
Before the Industrial Revolution, every piece of furniture was custom-made. Artisan crafted tables, chairs, and cabinets tailored to the individual—not

just in size, but in aesthetic and function. A home was a reflection of its owner, and each piece had a purpose beyond filling a space.
Then came the era of mass production. Factories found that they could streamline costs by creating uniform, fast-selling items. The uniqueness of bespoke furniture faded into the background as convenience took center stage. before being replaced. But there’s a growing movement of people who want something different: pieces that are built with intention and made to last a lifetime.
Today, many people are rediscovering the value of investing in custom and heirloom-quality furniture—not only because it lasts longer but because it reflects a personal sense of home.
WHY
BESPOKE MATTERS MORE THAN EVER
We live in a world of fast fashion and disposable furniture—pieces made to last only a few years
In her Boise showroom, she and her husband, Randy, display an array of well-crafted furniture, from rustic to contemporary, each piece chosen with an eye for detail, material, and function.
For those who care about craftsmanship and quality, custom furniture offers control over materials, comfort, and design. You aren’t just buying a chair or a table—you’re choosing an investment that may one day be passed down to children or grandchildren.
LOCAL EXPERTISE IN TIMELESS CRAFTSMANSHIP
If you’re wondering how to find heirloom-quality furniture, it helps to look close to home. Cherie Shelton of America the Beautiful Dreamer & Renditions understands the importance of timeless design.
She carefully selects furniture not based on trends, but on lasting quality. She explains: “Timeless furniture and eclectic styling, like fine art, will last a lifetime and never be outdated.”
WHAT
MAKES A PIECE AN INVESTMENT?
Some furniture gains value over time because of superior craftsmanship. Think of the Eames chair or the classic Ethan Allen wingback chairs from the 1960s—these are now collector’s items.
But beyond financial value, there is intrinsic value in furniture that stands the test of time. When you invest in something built to last, it becomes part of your life’s story—and maybe even the stories of generations to come.
THE IMPORTANCE OF TOUCH, TEXTURE, AND MATERIALS
Choosing the right materials isn’t just about aesthetic appeal—it’s about how you experience a space. Texture matters. The feel of a well-worn
leather chair, the smooth grain of polished wood, or the soft embrace of high-quality fabric affects how we connect with our environment.
Cherie, who previously worked as a Nordstrom clothing buyer, notes that the same principles apply to furniture as they do to fabric in fashion: “You know a top-of-the-line fabric when you touch it.”
When selecting custom furniture, consider:
• Material durability: Will this fabric hold up to daily life?
• Comfort: Does it fit the way you live?
• Size and scale: Is it designed for your space?
• Functionality: Does it serve your needs?
WHY CUSTOM CAN BE THE BEST CHOICE
Custom-made furniture isn’t just about luxury—it’s about practicality. Sometimes, the right piece simply doesn’t exist in mass production. Whether it’s an oddsized room, a specific color scheme, or personalized features, custom furniture allows you to create something unique that fits both your space and lifestyle.
And when you create something one-of-a-kind, you ensure it reflects your personality and needs—not just current design fads.
THE TRUE VALUE OF QUALITY
The greatest benefit of investing in heirloom-quality furniture is that it’s not just about today. It’s about how you live in your space now, how it evolves with you, and how it stands the test of time.
If a piece gains value, both sentimentally and financially, it becomes more than furniture—it becomes part of your story. And that’s an investment worth making.

Turning Challenges into Musical Triumph
INVESTING IN MUSIC, OVERCOMING CHALLENGES, AND CHASING DREAMS WITH PURPOSE
ARTICLE BY RENEE VAN AUSDLE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
FROM STRUGGLES TO STRENGTH: HOW ONE ARTIST INVESTS IN HERSELF TO CHASE HER DREAMS
Overcoming early health challenges, 22-year-old Eagle resident Hannah Strumner has turned her passion for music into a global inspiration.
From the start, school was difficult for Hannah. “I faced health issues from an early age, and my classmates often picked on me because they didn’t understand what was going on,” she recalls. “I’d come home from school and sing or write about my day. Music connected me with others and helped me feel less isolated.”
In 2018, Hannah moved from Burbank, California, to Eagle, Idaho, seeking a fresh start. Two years later, she received a Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis, yet she refused to let this define her. Instead, she drew strength from her music, using it as a beacon of hope and a bridge to connect with others facing challenges. Her 2020 release, “Old Phone Line,” highlighted her daily struggle with insulin dependency.
When COVID-19 hit, Hannah took to livestreaming to stay connected with friends and family, but her message quickly reached a global audience. Her Instagram following grew to over 190,000, transforming her social media presence into a powerful tool for connection.
Hannah’s decision to share her story with the American Diabetes Association marked a turning point. “I’ve heard countless stories from people diagnosed with health challenges, and it really helped me. You bond over what you’ve lost,” she shared.
INVESTING IN HERSELF
With each performance, Hannah recognized the importance of setting goals and staying focused on her vision. “For me,
investing in music means setting both shortterm and long-term goals,” she said. “I create a vision board every year to track progress, celebrate achievements, and remind myself to keep chasing my dreams. I also journal about the places I’ve performed, cherishing those experiences.”
CHASING DREAMS IN NASHVILLE
Hannah’s hard work resulted in a dream come true when she traveled to Nashville in September 2024. Surrounded by a talented team of songwriters, musicians, and producers, she worked to write new material.
“Nashville was a blast! I loved collaborating with others who shared the same passion for music. It’s a special bond,” she said.
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE
Locally, Hannah has built a strong presence in the Treasure Valley music scene, performing at iconic events like the Boise Potato Drop and the Boise Jump Jam and Jive. She will soon open for local artist Stella Prince at the Egyptian Theatre. In 2022, she collaborated with Sam Henry, releasing a music video for her single “Are You Ready to Let Go.”
HANNAH’S UNSTOPPABLE DRIVE AND MESSAGE TO OTHERS
Through bullying and struggles, Hannah has learned to trust herself, overcome obstacles, and turn challenges into strength. She encourages others to chase their dreams, no matter what.
“Never change yourself because of what someone else thinks. People will always try to bring you down. Instead of asking, ‘What’s wrong with me?’ recognize your worth. Invest in yourself by finding something to pour your love into. Roadblocks can be turned into something good with the right perspective.”
Hannah’s journey proves that hardship can shape us into something extraordinary. Keep an eye on this local talent—she’s just getting started.
“Never change yourself because of what someone else thinks. Invest in yourself, chase your dreams, and turn roadblocks into something good with the right perspective.”

CELEBRATING
EARTH DAY AND THE VITAL ROLE OF TREASURE VALLEY BEES
ARTICLE BY STAFF WRITER
As April ushers in warmer days, the Treasure Valley comes alive with the hum of bees, coinciding with Earth Day celebrations. These industrious pollinators are indispensable to Idaho’s agriculture, playing a pivotal role in the state’s economy and ecosystem.
Bees are responsible for pollinating over 80% of Idaho’s agricultural crops, including staples like apples, cherries, and alfalfa. Their efforts contribute significantly to the state’s agricultural output, ensuring both the quality and quantity of produce. The Idaho honey industry alone contributes millions to the state’s economy, supporting local businesses and farms. However, bee populations face threats from habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change, leading to concerning declines.
Local beekeepers, such as Travis Miller of TC’s Apiaries, are at the forefront of bee conservation in the Treasure Valley. Managing hundreds of hives, Travis provides essential pollination services to farms and dedicates time to educate the community on sustainable beekeeping practices. His work not only benefits local farms but also promotes biodiversity and ecological balance. His commitment ensures that honeybee populations remain robust, securing the region’s agricultural prosperity.
This Earth Day, individuals can support bee populations by planting pollinator-friendly gardens, reducing pesticide usage, and fostering habitats that encourage bee health. Supporting local beekeepers, purchasing raw honey, and advocating for pollinator-friendly policies can also make a difference. Collective efforts are vital to maintain the buzzing symphony that keeps Treasure Valley’s fields and orchards thriving.
Travis Miller, Guardian of the Bees
With 300-400 hives in summer, Travis Miller is a beekeeper dedicated to education and sustainability. Through nuc hive sales, beekeeping courses, and hive rentals, he helps beginners embrace the apiary trade. While commercial pollination is profitable, his true passion lies in educating the community and changing misconceptions about bees. “Bees aren’t aggressive—they’re defensive. If you find a hive, don’t poison them, re-home them!” he urges. Visit tcsapiaries.com to learn more.

Why Investing in Arts Education is Important
A Q&A WITH SUN VALLEY MUSEUM OF ART LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT DIRECTOR DIANNE SÁNCHEZ SHUMWAY
Dianne Sánchez Shumway is an arts educator, researcher, and visual artist with more than 15 years of experience connecting communities through the arts. Her work bridges education, creativity, and community engagement, amplifying underrepresented narratives and fostering social change.
SDP: Why do you think investing in arts education is essential, especially in rural communities?
DSS: Arts education is essential. It’s not just about learning how to paint or play an instrument—it’s about fostering critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. In rural communities,
Investing in arts education means investing in creativity, connection, and community well-being—ensuring every child, regardless of background, has the opportunity to express themselves, build confidence, and shape a more vibrant, inclusive future.

where access to diverse resources can be limited, the arts provide opportunities that might not otherwise be available. They offer young people a means of self-expression and contribute to overall well-being, especially considering increasing youth mental health concerns in our community.
Recent discussions, including those supported by the Wood River Women’s Foundation, on youth well-being have highlighted the importance of community support in fostering a sense of belonging. The arts are key in creating connections and spaces where individuals feel valued. Research consistently shows that engaging in the arts improves mental health, cognitive development, and academic performance. The arts are not an extra—they are a fundamental part of education and well-being.
SDP: How does the Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) make a difference in arts education? What are some of the benefits of its programs?
DSS: SVMoA is committed to making arts education accessible to everyone. We reach thousands of students each year, providing opportunities to explore creativity and develop their voices. These programs offer an essential space for students to express themselves in ways that traditional classrooms don’t always allow.
Engaging in creative activities helps students develop confidence, resilience, and emotional well-being. Additionally, our programs strengthen community connections, ensuring students feel seen, valued, and supported. This is particularly important in promoting a vibrant, engaged community contributing to the region’s overall cultural health.
SDP: How does SVMoA benefit the Wood River Valley community?
DSS: The arts contribute significantly to a community’s identity and vitality. In the Wood River Valley, SVMoA has helped create an environment where people want to live and work. A strong arts presence attracts new residents, supports local businesses, and attracts tourism to the area.
Beyond economic impact, the arts foster social unity and cultural vibrancy. When people participate in artistic experiences—whether attending a performance, visiting an exhibition, or taking a workshop—they engage with each other in meaningful ways that strengthen the community’s social fabric. The arts help build a shared cultural identity and create a sense of belonging vital to individual and collective well-being.
At SVMoA for "SNOW SHOW: Winter Now" school tour
SDP: How do independent organizations like SVMoA keep their programs running with less public and government funding?
DSS: It requires dedication and resourcefulness. Independent organizations like SVMoA rely on private donors, fundraising events, and collaborations with local schools and businesses. Public funding is limited, especially in rural areas, so nonprofits step in to ensure that people still have access to arts education. Schools often lack the resources to provide comprehensive arts programs, so partnerships with organizations like SVMoA help bridge that gap.
The need for community support is crucial. Investments in arts education are investments in cultural and economic well-being. When a community values and supports the arts, it reaps the benefits of a more engaged, creative, and connected population.
SDP: What role do donors and community members play in keeping arts education alive?
DSS: Their support is essential. Without donors and engaged community members, these programs wouldn’t exist. Fundraising events like the Sun Valley Wine Auction provide critical funding that keeps arts education accessible throughout the year. It’s not just about financial contributions—volunteers, advocates, and participants all play a role in making the arts a vital part of the community. When people invest their time, energy, and resources in the arts, they help build a stronger, more vibrant community. Arts education should be available to everyone, regardless of income or background. By supporting these programs, donors and community members are not just fostering creativity; they are ensuring that the arts continue to enrich lives, strengthen our culture, and contribute to our region’s economic and social health. It’s not just about financial contributions—volunteers, advocates, and participants all play a role in making the arts a vital part of the community. When people invest their time, energy, and resources in the arts, they help build a stronger, more vibrant community.

Idaho Real Estate: Investing in Growth, Stability, and Opportunity R
Discover why Boise and McCall are thriving markets, offering strong investment potential, rising home values, and long-term financial security in 2025
ARTICLE BY CHERI REEVES
IDAHO HAS BEEN ONE OF THE FASTEST-GROWING STATES IN THE COUNTRY, AND IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY. WITH ITS STUNNING LANDSCAPES, LOWER COST OF LIVING, AND BUSINESS-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT, MORE PEOPLE ARE CHOOSING TO CALL IDAHO HOME.
Over the past decade, the state’s population has surged, driven by newcomers from California, Washington, and other high-cost states looking for a better quality of life. Cities like Boise have consistently ranked among the best places to live, offering a balance of outdoor recreation, strong job opportunities, and a vibrant community. This steady influx of new residents has fueled real estate demand, pushing home values higher and making Idaho a smart long-term investment. Whether it’s young professionals, retirees, or remote workers seeking space and affordability, Idaho’s appeal continues to grow—along with its property market.
IF YOU’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT REAL ESTATE INVESTING, IDAHO SHOULD BE ON YOUR RADAR
Over the last decade, property values in areas like McCall and Boise have skyrocketed, and the long-term outlook remains strong. Whether you’re looking for a primary home, a rental property, or a smart place to park your money, Idaho has a lot going for it. Let’s break it down.
BOISE: A MARKET THAT KEEPS GROWING
Boise has been one of the hottest real estate markets in the country over the last ten years. In 2014, the median home price was around $189,000. By 2019, that number jumped to $324,000, and in 2021, Boise saw a staggering 30.7% price increase in just one year. Prices have since stabilized, but experts predict
continued appreciation of around 1.4% per year over the next few years.
So, why is Boise such a strong investment?
• People keep moving here. Boise consistently ranks as one of the best places to live in the U.S. thanks to its outdoor lifestyle, strong job market, and affordability compared to cities like Seattle and San Francisco. The city has a growing tech sector and diverse job market, attracting professionals and families looking for new opportunities.
• Inventory remains tight. Even with new construction, demand still outpaces supply, keeping prices stable and driving long-term appreciation.
• Rental demand is high. Whether you’re interested in long-term rentals or short-term vacation properties, Boise’s growing population and tourism scene create strong rental opportunities.
McCall: The Luxury Market on the Rise
McCall might have been Idaho’s best-kept secret a few years ago, but that’s changing fast. The median home list price hit $744,950 in early 2025, up from $599,000 the previous year. Properties are spending about 124 days on the market, reflecting a steady balance between buyers and sellers. What makes McCall such a great investment?
• It’s a four-season destination. Skiing in the winter, boating in the summer, and hiking and fishing in between—this means demand for vacation rentals and second homes stays steady all year.
• Luxury buyers are looking here. More people are turning to McCall as an alternative to pricier mountain towns like Jackson Hole and Sun Valley, which is pushing prices up. Local options like Brundage and Tamarack Resort provide the resort lifestyle at a lower cost of entry today, with substantial growth potential ahead.
Whether it’s young professionals, retirees, or remote workers seeking space and affordability, Idaho’s
appeal
continues to grow—along
with its property market.
real estate
SO, IS NOW THE RIGHT TIME TO INVEST?
Short answer? Yes—if you’re thinking long-term. Idaho real estate has proven its value over the past decade, and the trends show continued growth. There will always be market fluctuations, but if you buy in the right location and hold onto your property, the potential for appreciation is strong.
While many resort towns experience fleeting popularity, McCall stands out for its enduring appeal. It is the first to appreciate and the last to depreciate, maintaining its value even as other destinations lose momentum.
If you’re considering making a move—whether it’s buying your first investment property or expanding your portfolio—I’d love to help you navigate the market. Let’s connect and find the right opportunity for you.

FAMILY TIME is the Best Investment
These simple, yet intentional ideas can make the best memories.
EAT DINNER TOGETHER AS A FAMILY.
This meaningful time around the table is where connections happen. Let everyone share good moments from the day or something they struggled with. Create a jar of conversation starters, exchange giggles and cook up something delicious.
CREATE SURPRISES
Everyone likes to feel special – and surprised. The littlest things make the biggest impact: A backyard picnic; a sleepover in an indoor fort; an after-school ice cream treat; a bathroom spa day.
CREATE FAMILY TRADITIONS
Build weekly or monthly traditions –movie nights with popcorn, board game marathons, a gratitude jar, evening bike rides, living room dance parties, even a family book club to discover old favorites and new reads.
EXPRESS LOVE AND GRATITUDE
In busy seasons, it’s easy to forget to let a loved one feel appreciated and thought of. Tuck a hand-written note in a lunch box or give an unexpected hug; spend time sharing what you’re thankful for about them.
KEEP GENERATIONS LINKED
Consider Sunday meals with grandparents or weekly phone calls if distance separates. Invite them to share their childhood stories and treasured memories. Start a yearly family scrapbook filled with favorite photographs and vacation souvenirs.
INVEST IN YOUR GREENS
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD
PHOTOGRAPHY BY
JANIE JONES
Boost your health by adding a generous serving of fresh greens to your daily diet. While both cooked and raw vegetables offer health benefits, consuming them raw often provides the most nutrients. Raw greens are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential vitamins, helping to lower inflammation and reduce the risk of disease.
DANDELION GREENS:
Dandelion greens are a nutritious and easy addition to any meal, perfect for salads or cooked dishes. They are rich in vitamins A, C, K, chlorophyll, and fiber, making them a great choice for digestion and overall health. Their light flavor and texture enhance salads and sandwiches.
BROCCOLI:
Broccoli is often hailed as a nutritional powerhouse, packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals that support overall health. Known for being high in vitamins A, C, and K, it also contains important minerals like potassium, iron, and calcium. In addition, it’s a rich source of beta-carotene, flavonoids, and fiber. Whether raw or cooked, broccoli is an excellent choice for immune system support, making it one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables available.
BRUSSELS SPROUTS:
Brussels sprouts are a highly nutritious cruciferous vegetable, known for their vitamin C, K, and folate content, as well as carotenoids and fiber. These vegetables can be shaved, sliced, sautéed, boiled, or grilled, offering a range of flavors from mild to bitter, depending on preparation.
KALE:
Kale is loaded with essential nutrients such as vitamins C, B6, E, K, and manganese. It contains twice as much selenium as spinach and is an excellent source of calcium. Kale’s unique properties help bind to cholesterol and lower oxalate levels, which promotes calcium absorption and makes it suitable for those prone to kidney stones. Additionally, it provides eye health benefits, thanks to lutein, and its disease-fighting properties make it a great addition to salads, smoothies, and more.
ARTICHOKES:
Artichokes are not only delicious but also packed with fiber, which aids in digestion. They are a great source of plant protein, potassium, and antioxidants like polyphenols. Artichokes also provide essential nutrients, including vitamins C, K, folate, magnesium, and B vitamins.
ASPARAGUS:
Asparagus is versatile and can be enjoyed grilled, sautéed, baked, or even raw. Packed with vitamins C, E, B, K, folate, and copper, it’s a great source of fiber. It also helps lower cholesterol and provides a variety of antioxidants that aid in healing. Asparagus is a perfect side dish that complements both light and robustly flavored meals.
SPINACH:
Spinach is a popular green known for its mild flavor and impressive nutritional profile. Rich in vitamins A, C, K, as well as magnesium, potassium, and iron, spinach is great for overall health. It also provides antioxidants that support eye health and includes calcium for stronger bones. However, because spinach has a higher oxalate content, it should be consumed in moderation by those with a history of kidney stones.

RECHARGING YOUR SOUL IN
Travel is no longer just a luxury, it’s an investment that has the power to enrich our lives in ways that traditional financial investments cannot. It broadens our horizons, enhances personal and professional growth, and allows you to recharge your mind and body.
Crystal-clear waters and perfectly white sandy beaches await to recharge the spirits of all weary travelers.
Cancún is known around the world as one of Mexico’s finest tourist destinations. Steeped in the rich history of the Mexican Caribbean, Cancún offers visitors the best that the Yucatán Peninsula has to offer. Whether you are coming for the all-inclusive resort experience or are looking to enjoy the seemingly never-ending gorgeous beaches, Cancún has it all. Unbelievably fresh and delicious seasonal cuisine, great weather, a rich cultural history, exquisitely clear turquoise blue Caribbean waters, and vibrant coral reefs are all waiting for you to explore when you arrive.
Nature lovers, environmentalists, thrill seekers, and luxury destination travel enthusiasts all have a place to call home in Cancún. Boulevard Kukulkan, more commonly known as the Hotel Zone, is home to Cancún’s most luxurious all-inclusive hotels and boasts some of the city’s finest restaurants, nightclubs, and shopping centers. This fifteen-mile-long sand bar separates the Caribbean Sea from the Laguna Inchoate. The brackish waters of
the lagoon’s nature reserve and Mangrove ecosystem offer an exciting, ecologically friendly look into the rich natural history of Cancún. On the other side of the boulevard, crystal-clear waters and perfectly white sandy beaches await to recharge the spirits of all weary travelers.
The JW Marriott Resort and Spa is the place to stay while in Cancún. You'll be met by the most gracious of staff and a high level of service is standard across the property. This impeccably designed resort features multiple pools, an incredible spa, countless delicious restaurants, and a delightful lobby bar featuring over 150 signature margaritas.
Caring for the mind and body should be an essential part of everyone’s travel. A little physical exercise is a necessary element of any vacation for me. Puerto Maya Cancún combines a look into the historical Mayan culture of the Yucatán followed by an amazing speed boat tour of both the lagoon and the sea. And, just when you think it can’t get any better, it’s time to jump in and swim around. Snorkeling on the vibrant coral reefs and visiting MUSA, the Cancun Underwater Museum of Art, absolutely recharges the mind, body, and soul. It is an incredible workout!
If you care to go a little further out of the city, Cenotes Zapote Eco-Tour awaits. Cenotes are natural sinkholes that expose cool, refreshing, groundwater
that is both invigorating and spiritually refreshing at the same time. There are over 6000 cenotes on the Yucatán, each one is unique and otherworldly. Floating or frolicking in the cool waters inside the earth is the ultimate spa experience. There are zip lines or diving platforms at most cenotes and they are well worth experiencing.
While it is nice to explore the “Hotel Zone”, you don't have to leave the hotel to experience fine international dining at its best!
Sacbé Beach Shack, located in the adjoining Marriott property was beyond belief. Situated directly on the sandy beaches beneath the hotel, the "beach shack" is a whimsically designed bar and dining room offering a perfect oceanside culinary experience. The freshest local ingredients were artfully combined to create a scrumptious offering that highlights regional Mexican cuisines. The mezcal lab experience with famed Master Mezcalier, Chef Benjamín Nava Vargas was an unexpected treat and opened a door to a delicious understanding and appreciation of small-batch mezcals.
Other JW Marriott Resort and Spa culinary treasures include Hana Polynesian Grill’s themed dining room. Perfectly crafty cocktails paired wonderfully with the authentic Polynesian Islands menu. The evening’s festivities were highlighted by a completely themed costumed troupe of singers and dancers performing time-honored Polynesian fire dances. While visiting, be sure to explore Kasai Izakaya, Club 91, and Bravo, a very fresh take on modern Spanish cuisine.
And, when it feels like it’s time to leave the hotel again, check out Chambao Cancún. Just think of it as an interactive curated dinner theatre experience with pop-up music, dance, fashion, and acrobatic activations staged throughout the evening.
Cancún should be at the top of everyone’s travel list. Trust me, you can thank me later.
