LIFESTYLE LETTER

A letter from the Field Our fellow publisher of Boulder City Lifestyle magazine lost his home in The Marshall Fire. We dedicate this issue to Andy, Kate and their family and we are honored to share his letter here. For thousands of Boulder County residents, darkness was felt with unrelenting force on December 30th. The Marshall Fire unleashed widespread devastation, but the resolve of our community proved to be far too strong for defeat. For those of us who were around for the flood of 2013, we really shouldn’t be surprised, should we? From the immediate response by neighbors calling neighbors, making sure they were out of their homes, to the firefighters who risked their lives, all the way to the local, state and federal government agencies—it was truly incredible how quickly everyone mobilized. There are so many heroes who have emerged from the Marshall Fire, many that we will know, and many that we will never know. I will be the first to admit that over the last two years, it has been easy to see the glass “half empty,” regarding many parts of society. Yet, while our country may be divided on many topics, the response to these recent events proves that the community of Boulder County is stronger than ever. My biggest takeaway from this experience is that no matter what your political stance, or what kind of car you drive, or what school your kids go to or if you compost or not, there is still an immense amount of love in humankind. I trust that this wave of goodwill that we are all riding can continue long after the rubble is removed and new foundations are poured. We would like to dedicate this issue to the firefighters who worked tirelessly, risking their own safety, to fight the Marshall Fire. With all of our love and gratitude,

HOUSEPLANTS THE PERFECT ROOMMATE An indoor garden sanctuary

ARTICLE BY SEAN O'KEEFE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOLIE LOREN The ubiquitous houseplant has long been a cautious curiosity for many. Comments such as “I don’t have a green thumb,” or “I can’t keep anything alive,” have echoed through the rooms and hallways of almost every home in America. Well, it’s time to dispel all the mistruths about whether houseplants are beneficial and to lay the foundation for a little oasis of green happiness in the corner of every home! By the way, you don’t really need a green thumb as there are plenty of hard-to-kill houseplants that can survive any level of neglect! And remember not only do houseplants look pretty, they also decrease stress and anxiety, increase happiness, and bring a sense of joy and relaxation to every room. Houseplants make us feel better about ourselves in many ways because they allow us to care for them and we reap the rewards of that love. No one is alone when you have a houseplant, as they are our forever listeners. Yes, some people actually do talk with their houseplants all day long! There are many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment. Aside from reducing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity in the home, house plants have been shown to reduce mental fatigue, accelerate the healing process, as well as improve productivity and focus. Pothos, spider plants, lady palms, yucca, and succulents are so pretty and easy to grow. It is no wonder that we have seen a revival of indoor gardening trends. Instagram is teeming with photos of incredible indoor “living green” vignettes that show us all how clever we can be when decorating with house plants! All you really need is to a pick a place in the home that has the best light and pick your plants. Think outside of the box when it comes to decorating with houseplants. Look for underused spaces. Use mixed and matched pots of different sizes and shapes. Turn a shelf into a plant display. Go vertical with some hanging plants or an antique ladder. You can even group some of your favorite plants together into a single large decorative pot. CONTINUED >

There are many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment. Signature large plant displays anchor the most well-designed rooms in America and it’s all there for us to look at, learn from, and bring into our own home. Whether combined into a single large decorative pot or clustered together in a corner, always remember the key to any house plant décor is to have a thriller, a tall plant usually with a strong color and form; filler plants that literally will fill the pot covering all the soil; and a spiller plant that trails over the edge of the pot. Try any combination of your favorite plants or a tried and true combination of a fiddle-leaf fig, a prayer plant, and a string of pearls. No matter how you look at it, houseplants improve our lives in many ways. Indoor gardens provide us an alternative way to commune with nature and to reconnect with the living world. We all benefit from the additional life that houseplants bring into our homes. In this crazy world of ours, wouldn’t be it nice to return home to your own personal indoor greenspace. Happy gardening!

Everything loves a little sunshine!

Looking for a luxurious night out on the town? On Saturday, March 5 you may have the chance to meet Georgia Bulldogs legend Mark Richt at The Call For Life Gala & Auction in a beautiful venue, the Hotel at Avalon. The festivities will kick off with an exclusive VIP reception where guests will have the opportunity to have their photograph taken with Mark and receive a signed copy of his book, Making the Call. The main event will feature a cocktail reception, wine pull, raffle, seated dinner, auction and keynote speech by Richt. All proceeds from this 24th annual banquet will benefit A Beacon of Hope, an accredited medical clinic dedicated to serving young girls and women facing unplanned pregnancy and sexual health crises. Mark’s passion for pre-born life was most poignantly demonstrated when he and his wife Katharyn adopted two abandoned babies. One of Beacon’s patients named Danielle (pictured here, left) shared, “Everyone at A Beacon of Hope was so warm and caring. I never felt judged, and I always knew they were there if I ever needed anything. When I saw Chloe on the ultrasound machine, that’s when it hit me. This baby is really forming inside me every hour.”

Funds raised through this event will not only provide free medical services and compassionate care to pregnant women, but it will also give babies a healthy start in life, and help new families transition from crisis to stability through parenting education and practical support until their babies reach age two. Mark Richt currently serves as a studio analyst for the ACC Network. Prior to that, he served as head football coach at the University of Miami and the University of Georgia. Georgia won two SEC championships, six SEC East titles and nine bowl games under Richt, and finished the season in the Associated Press Top 10 rankings seven times. In addition, he coached two quarterbacks to the Heisman Trophy: Charlie Ward in 1993 and Chris Weinke in 2000. Platinum sponsor, The Malon D. Mimms Company, has generously partnered with Beacon on this event for the past eleven years. Remaining sponsorship opportunities, which include extensive recognition, range from $1,000 to $15,000. Early registration closed in February, but tickets and sponsorships may still be available at ABeaconOfHope.com. Advanced registration is required. COVID-19 safety precautions are detailed on the event webpage.

Catrina Maxwell has been shooting for the features in our magazine since we launched six years ago. Her latest passion is working with interior designers to showcase their work. Her job allows her access to some of the most beautiful homes in our community. One such project was a new home in Berkley Lake, where she collaborated with local interior designer Cristi Holcombe. Capturing the vibe of a room takes a creative eye and skillful use of a professional camera. In addition to these core photographer talents, there is another key factor. “Since I started doing interiors, I have found that styling is a must!” Catrina explains, “You want a house to give the feel that it is lived in, but in a pretty and streamlined way.” CONTINUED >

"Catrina really pays attention to the small details that other photographers might miss. I knew she could capture it exactly as we intended.” – Cristi Holcombe

Before embarking on a project, Catrina likes to hop on a call with new clients to ensure a good fit and to gather all the pertinent information, so she can plan her approach for the shoot. “I like to let clients know what to expect when booking a shoot,” says Catrina. “Then, we talk about the number of shots and which package is best for their needs. We also talk about styling. Some clients like to have my stylist help them with the shoot. This can definitely make things less stressful for the designer.” Cristi Holcombe and her design team worked on the Berkley Lake home from the ground up. “It was a 5,500 square foot new build. We designed the finishes on the exterior as well as the interior and followed the design through with furnishing and styling design,” says Cristi. “This project was so much fun to shoot,” says Catrina. “Cristi was great to work with. I am really happy with how all the images turned out.” “This was our first time working with Catrina, but I’ve been a huge fan for quite a while,” says Cristi. “I was so excited to work with her on this project. She offered great suggestions for styling and framing each shot. We are already looking forward to our next shoot with her on another project.”

The Architecture of a Restaurant DESIGNING COMMERCIAL SPACES FOR BEAUTY, FUNCTION AND SAFETY ARTICLE BY ALPHARETTA CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE BALDWIN ARCHITECTURAL GROUP

Enjoying a meal at a restaurant is about more than just a delicious menu and a smiling waiter. Before the chef dices, chops or mixes, an architect creates a vision which ultimately makes or breaks a dining experience. We sat down with M. Christopher Baldwin who designs commercial and residential spaces in and around Johns Creek. He is the mastermind behind the charming restaurant, Lapeer Steak and Seafood. Are there similarities in designing a commercial space and a residential space? C ommercial and residential design are very different. Much of the work that goes into creating a home and a commercial project has a lot of variables. Commercial design is based on how the client is trying to attract customers, whereas residential design is getting the client the things that they are personally attracted to. There are more requirements for creating a commercial space than a residential space. Accessibility and life safety rules are among the most primary details. You need to ensure you have all of the

accessibility to that space and are able to get hundreds of people out of the space in an emergency. We also manage many engineering details that come up. Structural engineering is needed for both types of design when a new structure is being created, but the mechanical, electrical & plumbing details that are required on commercial are often more optional on residential design. How does the architect collaborate creatively with the chef, interior designer and brand managers to create a cohesive concept? We work with a lot of these entities when it comes to commercial spaces, especially when creating spaces like restaurants where the public is coming to enjoy their time eating out and relaxing and enjoying great food. Seeing something that attracts their attention is one of the biggest goals. Walking into a space that gives that "WOW" impact is critical. Sitting down and enjoying a nice meal is important to keep these clients coming back over and over again. CONTINUED >

What aspects of the Lapeer project were unique or memorable and what features will diners appreciate most? The exterior of this building dominates the visual for this location. We created a building based on what had been a similar church building in the area and created the entrance to get the clients excited for what they see on the outside. We enjoyed creating all the exciting interior spaces: the finishes for the bar, the seating area, and a nice covered dining area looking out at a beautiful outdoor space. The open ceiling and suspended lighting was key to giving it a great focal point. A great seafood menu is critical too, but that is up to the owners to keep that exciting for the clients.

The data is in. According to recent statistics published by the CDC, over 42% of American adults, or nearly one out of every two people, are considered obese. Alarmingly, overweight and obesity prevalence has been rapidly increasing for more than two decades, continuing to climb amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s important to note that undesired weight gain and obesity are associated with the development of a myriad of health complications, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, dyslipidemia, impairments in joint health, weakened immune systems, and depression. “Clearly, traditional attempts at weight loss and healthy weight management are failing,” says Dr. Zachary Grunewald, Ph.D., RDN, Bariatric Program Coordinator at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. “Despite an overabundance of food in our environment and increased options for home fitness training during the pandemic, our nation remains hungrier and more overweight than ever.” In fact, recent polling found that 61% of respondents self-reported gaining weight since March of 2020. Luckily, an emerging and energetic group of healthcare professionals at Emory Johns Creek Hospital have designed a new medically-supervised weight loss program to help tackle our nation’s expanding waistline and hunger crisis. A NOVEL SOLUTION Under the direction of obesity and weight management specialists Dr. David Prologo, MD, FSIR, ABOM-D, and Dr. Grunewald, the new medical weight loss program features the use of a novel, minimally-invasive weight loss procedure pioneered by Dr. Prologo. The procedure involves the use of computer tomography

(CT) guided cryoablation, in which a small needle is inserted into the patient’s back and positioned close to the stomach’s vagus nerve. The nerve is then "frozen" to temporarily stop hunger signals sent from the stomach to the brain. The end result is the reduction of appetite (hunger) for patients trying to restrict their calories for weight loss. Decreased hunger allows patients to reduce calories and increase activity, ultimately gaining momentum toward a healthy lifestyle. Cryoablation is quick – it takes only about 30 minutes and patients leave with just a small bandage. “The idea is that by temporarily decreasing hunger signals to the brain, the procedure allows patients to focus more on exercise and lifestyle changes, while worrying less about being hungry,” says Dr. Prologo. Combining the procedure with a comprehensive, individualized lifestyle counseling program focused on nutrition and fitness education, led by world-class Emory registered dietitian-nutritionists and physical therapists, will help lead more patients to success. Program participants will also receive a rapid metabolic and body composition screening to assess glucose levels, hemoglobin A1c, lipid panels, and body fat percentage. Drs. Prologo and Grunewald believe that this unique, 8-month program will be a winning strategy to help individuals lose weight and keep it off for good. “This program is unlike any other weight loss intervention. It enables us to effect long-term dietary and lifestyle changes while the patient’s hunger is temporarily suppressed,” says Dr. Grunewald. “During this time, we are able to retrain patients on how to eat and exercise for a well-balanced, healthy lifestyle under direct medical supervision.” Prospective patients can expect to receive up to six individualized nutrition consultations, multiple exercise training sessions, and rapid metabolic testing at baseline and again after six months. The Emory Johns Creek Hospital medical team is excited to empower individuals to live a healthier new lifestyle with sustained weight loss. The cryoablation procedure and medical weight loss program will premier in the Johns Creek community in 2022. EmoryHealthcare.org MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/A L P HA R E T TA

Murilo and Christine Santos together boast passport stamps from more than 100 countries. Through their newly opened Boarding Pass Coffee shop, roastery and tasting room, they bring some of those international locales right to Milton. By exploring new tastes, people get a ticket to the world’s best flavors and a glimpse of different international cultures via the common language of coffee. “The whole idea is for people to enjoy the experience,” Murilo said. “Our goal is to offer great coffee, but also provide our customers - our ‘coffee travelers’- a cultural experience and insight into new travel destinations.” Murilo (pictured left) and Christine met in Sao Paulo, Brazil and began sharing their life adventure together in 2013. After speeding up steep and dusty roads on the back of a motorcycle, Christine met Murilo’s parents for the first time at the family coffee farm, Fazenda Sant'ana, where they ultimately married. Wedding favors were bags of specialty coffee. Afterward, guests clamored for more of that rich and delicious roast, which planted seeds for Boarding Pass Coffee. While earning an Executive MBA at Georgia Tech, the idea to roast his family’s coffee really started to percolate for Murilo and he knew it was time to chase his dream. His coffee roots found fertile soil in Georgia and his grad school classmates were happy to act as taste testers for Murilo’s various roasts, providing early direction for Boarding Pass Coffee. The Santoses began selling their specialty grade coffee beans online and at Atlanta-area farmers markets and festivals in 2020. Just a year later, the new shop and tasting room opened where “coffee travelers” can learn about other cultures and document their taste travels with “visa stamp” stickers in their very own Boarding Pass Coffee “passport.” The most popular roasts at Boarding Pass Coffee come from beans grown at Fazenda Sant'ana. Other current roasts and bestsellers come from Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Papua New Guinea, Honduras and Colombia. Beyond coffee, they offer in-store and virtual coffee tastings as well as a monthly coffee club, delivering a variety of impressive roasts to Georgia, as well as direct to doorsteps across the United States. Today the Santos family, which now includes three daughters, enjoys traveling to nearby Puerto Rico for a dose of the Latin vibe. The family plans to safari in Africa, with the coffee-producing countries of Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya high on their priority list. Both the family farm and its coffee beans are Rainforest Alliance and UTZ certified, and organic certification is underway. Boarding Pass Coffee is minority owned, a Georgia Grown company and a proud supporter of IWCA, the International Women’s Coffee Alliance. Hours: Monday-Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 13695 Highway 9, Suite 102, Milton 770.674.1350 BoardingPassCoffee.com
