Seize the Summer TRAVEL AND ADVENTURE SUMMARIZE A COLORADO SUMMER. If you’re not taking the chance to escape your 9-to-5 job for mountain adventures and open country roads, then you’re doing it all wrong. Good news is — we’re only at the halfway point this summer, and this issue is full of inspiring stories about seizing summer. In this issue, we met Denver expats who ditched their 9-to-5 jobs and traded in the Rockies for life in Belize. Even though life here in Colorado is pretty great, there’s something about the song of the ocean that’s pretty darn appealing. We also got a glimpse of writer Marley Jeranko (@ramblin_woman) and her partner Crockett’s life on the road. They made a minimalist home on wheels named Gaucho. If you’ve ever considered living a nomadic life, all you need is a van and these few key takeaways from full-time van dwellers. If your summer plans have to be closer to home — we got you. Adventure is

RESOURCE CENTRAL LAUNCHES H2OWN IT INITIATIVE TO TACKLE WATER SCARCITY THE

b est co lle ct i o n

I S Y O U R S.

Resource Central, a nonprofit based in Boulder, has launched H2Own It — a new water conservation initiative to engage thousands of Colorado residents with easy conservation actions and water-wise prizes. The initiative is part of the nonprofit’s Billion Gallon Challenge to help local families conserve one billion gallons of water by 2020. “Water is a finite and valuable resource, and we can’t afford to waste it,” said Neal Lurie, president of Resource Central. “Colorado’s population is expected to double by 2050, and our water supplies will have a hard time keeping up with population growth without smart conservation strategies. H2Own It empowers families to create lasting changes to help ensure that everyone has enough water for future needs.” The interactive site features quick action items and suggestions, as well as opportunities for families to win water-wise items, including a free high-efficiency toilet and Garden In A Box kit of water-wise plants. The outreach campaign was developed with support from the Walton Family Foundation. H2OwnIt.org ResourceCentral.org

GIVING BACK

Connecting the Community ARTICLE BRIANNA BLAIR PHOTOGRAPHY SHUN-LUOI FONG

WITHIN EACH COMMUNITY, THERE ARE THOSE WHO NEED A LITTLE EXTRA ATTENTION. But it’s more common than not for those who need help to be right underneath our noses. Whether its a neighbor, a friend or even a family member, the senior community tends to be forgotten. Aging faces and tired hands lost to the ever-changing society around us. Previously known as Boulder County CareConnect, Cultivate’s goal is to grow relationships and opportunities for seniors within the Boulder County community. As a non-profit, their mission is to work with seniors no matter where they are in the community whether it’s at their own home or a senior living facility. With over 500 active volunteers each month, Cultivate was able to serve 6,719 seniors and their household members in 2017 alone. “It’s so rewarding to hear beautiful stories shared by seniors and volunteers of how impactful those relationships have been,” says Director of Communications Shun-Luoi Fong. Cultivate provides services such as grocery delivery, transportation to medical appointments, a fix-it program to repair basic household needs along with seasonal help such as lawn cleanup and shoveling snow.

GIVING BACK

(CON TI N U ED)

“Our senior neighbors are important members of our community. They have contributed so much, and they still have so much to offer," says Fong. “But they also face daily challenges which can be isolating. We have the opportunity to give back, and help make an impact in their lives.” Fong recognizes the relationships being formed around him every day between seniors and volunteers. “Juanita and Susan are a perfect example,” says Fong. “Susan drove Juanita to medical appointments, but before long it turned into shopping trips, and simply hanging out together outside of Cultivate.” Ideally, Cultivate’s ultimate goal is to one day see people in the community take on these initiatives without their help. “We would love to see communities take the initiative to come alongside and support their seniors without us, and allow seniors to make an impact in their lives," says Fong. "Until then, we are here to make sure seniors are connected to the community.”

Cultivate’s annual Celebrating the Ages fundraiser will take place Thursday, August 2nd, at the Boulder Jewish Community Center from 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. This fundraiser serves as an opportunity for the community to gather together for an evening of celebration. Food and drinks will be served. For more information on this event and other ways to support Cultivate, please visit Cultivate.ngo.

HOW LIANA BEZUIDENHOUT IS BRINGING BOULDER'S TIME-STRAPPED A BRAND NEW WAY TO GET FIT, ON THEIR TIME.

FOR THOSE STRIVING TO LEAD A HEALTHY LIFE, THERE ARE TWO KEY PRINCIPLES TO LIVE BY: EAT WELL AND EXERCISE. For most, however, this is easier said than done. Fitting a workout into an already hectic schedule can seem daunting at best, impossible at worst. For Liana Bezuidenhout, a restaurateur in Cape Town, the struggle was very real. When an Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) studio opened just a stone's throw from her restaurant, Bezuidenhout was immediately intrigued. The lure of a 20-minute, full-body workout was irresistible, and soon she was hooked. Once back on American soil and living in Louisville, Bezuidenhout sought out a local 46

ARTICLE SAMANTHA TRUEHEART PHOTOGRAPHY BAILEY BATCHELOR

I WOKE UP TO THE SOUND OF BIRDS CHIRPING AND THE BOULDER CREEK RUSHING BY AT THE FOOT OF THE MOUNTAIN MOTEL ONE FOGGY MORNING IN EARLY SUMMER. My rustic cabin motel room was the perfect spot to cozy up and pull the sheets high above my head as a light rain trickled down outside. There was no sound of cars or the normal hustle and bustle that Boulder is slowly beginning to accumulate as our city grows larger by the day. There was only peace. This is a common experience at the Foot the Mountain Motel, located on West Arapahoe Avenue near the canyon. “We always get people saying how relaxed they were after leaving here,” says Alex Gower, the general manager of the motel. “That’s the best compliment you can get as a hotelier — that you positively impacted someone’s vacation or trip through this region.”

50

General Manager Alex Gower

Foot of the Mountain Motel is the oldest operating motel in Boulder. It was built in the 1930s by Charles and Mary Siebert as an “upscale” retreat option besides the car camping that took place in Eben G. Fine Park across the street. Although the owners 200 WEST ARAPAHOE AVENUE BOULDER, CO 80302 1-866-773-5489 FootoftheMountainMotel.com

have changed throughout its life, the experience is very much the same. The motel offers a rustic, charming cabin experience with mere steps outside some of the best hiking, biking and climbing in the area. The room I was given for the night was paneled in knotty pine, had exposed wood beams and had vintage national park poster art hanging. There was a red, vintage-inspired minifridge and accompanying red, vintage-inspired phone that felt like I stepped into a time portal or the set of a 1950s television show.

“It’s really got a Boulder feel to it, just being what it is — log cabins on the outskirts of town — it’s not trying to be anything that it’s not,” says Gower. Although the room was decorated in timely pieces from the origin of the motel, the modern amenities were of this decade. Gower explains that the motel has recently undergone a massive structural facelift. The motel redid the gas, water heating, electrical, air conditioning and heating to modern standards. Plus, televisions provide streaming and casting, and the internet is faster than ever. Next on the list is updating the roof and remodeling the lobby for a better guest experience during the complimentary continental breakfast. Gower also plans on hosting recreational activities like Bingo and movies on the lawn to foster a stronger community.

The motel is dog-friendly and provides a grassy space to let your puppy stretch his legs. Deer frequently graze on the lawn and management keep a few squirrels happily plump. A white pigeon released during a recent wedding has decided to take an extended stay at the Foot of the Mountain Motel. The staff has lovingly nicknamed her “Betty White.” Guests at Foot of the Mountain Motel get an experience unlike anything else. It is authentic and offers great customer service that can be hard to find in the cookie-cutter hotels across the country. By supporting your local hotel, you are preserving a special piece of Boulder history. “We love our little piece of Boulder,” says Gower. “We’re doing everything we can to keep it going and continue its success. We’re here to stay, and we want everyone to enjoy it with us.”

COLORADO VIEWS ABOUND IN A UNIQUE, SUSTAINABLE BOULDER HOME

ARTICLE LISA VAN HORNE PHOTOGRAPHY KYLIE FITTS PERCHED IN A PERFECT POSITION FROM WHICH TO BASK IN BEAUTIFUL LAKE AND FLATIRONS VIEWS, THIS BOULDER HOME EMBODIES WHAT MANY WOULD CALL PREREQUISITES TO LIVING IN BOULDER. A little eclectic, a hint of playfulness, and a lot of focus on living sustainably, this home was designed with reverence and appreciation for the natural areas surrounding it. With the goal of creating an open concept home that felt both modern and welcoming, the homeowners worked with local Cottonwood Custom Builders and HMH Architecture + Interiors to bring their vision of a home in sync with the outdoors to life. “We specialize in building energy efficient dwellings,” says Jeff Hindman, president, founder and owner of Cottonwood Custom Builders. “We promote green building and giving back to the community, and we focus on using sustainable building materials and providing exceptional attention to detail.” Simple, purposeful details play a large role in making this home comfortable and concise, helping it to feel spacious while remaining environmentally efficient. While floor to ceiling windows offer exceptional views of the neighboring reservoir and Flatirons, clear vertical grain cedar siding and paneling wraps from its outside to the inside, merging the two seamlessly. Crafted to maximize its views and exist in harmony with its surroundings, this home exemplifies Boulder living.

life's a beach HOW A COLORADO COUPLE SWAPPED THE ROCKIES FOR A LIFE IN BELIZE

IF YOU’VE EVER DREAMED OF DITCHING YOUR 9-TO-5 JOB AND MOVING TO THE BEACH, WELL, YOU’RE NOT ALONE. Even though life here in Colorado is pretty great, there’s something about the siren song of the ocean that’s pretty darn appealing, inspiring fantasies of sun, sand and endless piña coladas. Former Denver ad exec Ellen Larson Lee, along with her telecom industry husband, John Lee, turned their beach-living dreams into a reality, swapping the Rocky Mountains and Denver skyline for the lush jungle and crystal-clear Caribbean of Belize. After visiting the tiny Central American country in 2004, the couple decided to quit their Colorado jobs and, without any related experience whatsoever, buy a hotel on the beach (the Maya Beach Hotel), just off the second-largest barrier reef in the world. We’re guessing it was either a pretty good visit, or pretty strong piña coladas. We asked Ellen how she and her husband made the leap, why they fell in love with Belize and what she misses most about her home state. BOULDER LIFESTYLE (BL): HOW DID YOU END UP IN BELIZE? ELLEN LEE (EL): John and I have both traveled extensively. In fact, we met while we were both living and working in Finland. We decided to get married and then returned to Denver, where I came from. From that point on, we traveled a lot for work and started taking longer and longer vacations too, both to Australia (where John is from) and to places we'd never been. Eventually, we both started getting itchy feet, and once we started talking about the possibility of moving abroad, there was no turning back. We really wanted to find something tropical, but we didn't really know exactly what we wanted to do. We were looking in the South Pacific and around the Caribbean, and eventually, we narrowed it down to Belize. BL: WHAT MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH BELIZE? EL: The best things about Belize are the people and the weather. Belizeans are ethnically and culturally diverse, naturally friendly and good-humored. And just like Colorado, the friendly weather is definitely a draw since you tend to spend a lot of time outside.

In our case, the location in the quiet Maya Beach area was perfect, and while the "hotel" we purchased was a start, we saw a lot of opportunity for creative improvements and small expansions. BL: DID YOU HAVE ANY PRIOR EXPERIENCE RUNNING A HOTEL? EL: Neither of us had any hospitality experience other than a few restaurant jobs in high school and college. TIPS FROM TWO FULL-TIME VAN DWELLERS ON BUILDING THE ULTIMATE MEANS TO ADVENTURE

IN OUR FAMILY, WE LIVE BY THE PHILOSOPHY THAT LESS IS MORE. That ’s why in August of last year, we welcomed in another member that would hold us to it. Meet Gaucho, the Ram Promaster van. Most mistake him for their electrician, but in fact, he’s just our humble home on wheels. If you’re thinking, “Well, why would anyone want to do that?” we get it — you’re not alone. The short answer is: we craved a space that encourages minimalism — one where we would be less reliant on the comforts of a modern home and more focused on the things that make us feel alive. For us, full-time RVing could offer just that. Of course, you don’t have to live in a van to experience the freedom of an ever-changing backyard. Van life is for adventurers of all kinds: from dirtbags to glampers, weekenders to remote-settlers. However you choose to roam the road, we know that building a home out of one of these beasts can be as daunting as rappelling into a bottomless slot canyon. That’s why we reflected on what we wish we would have done (better, anyway) and came up with a few key takeaways...

Make friends. Boulder has a vast community of “van lifers” to turn to when you need to bounce an idea around, borrow tools, or work out the details of all those complicated jobs. (We can’t all be engineers!) These folks are not only great resources, but they also make the experience that much more rich. Exchange stories. Form allies. Share a beer. You might just find a lifelong friend. If you’re lucky, you can get them to spill where all the best camping spots are! Get creative! Take advantage of online resources — SprinterVanDiaries and Reddit forums like Van Dwellers are invaluable — but remember: there’s no one way to build your home. It’s okay to go off the books and pull out your inner architect. Actually, it’s a lot more fun if you do. Focus on functionality. Instagram would have you believe that van life is all reclaimed wood and fancy Pendleton blankets, but the truth of the matter is if you’re doing it right, you’re not spending much time inside the van anyway. The way we see it, your van is simply a place to lay your head after the fun is over. So, throw in a good memory foam mattress, skip all that extra business, and take a hike. No, really...go for a hike. Don’t take yourself too seriously. You’re going to stub your toe on a plank of wood, you’re going to get insulation debris stuck in places you can’t imagine, and you’re going to read the tape measure wrong. Learning how to roll with the punches is one of the greatest lessons this experience offers. The sooner you accept it, the sooner you can relax and enjoy the ride. Give yourself time. The jobs that you think will take you 30 minutes are always the ones that end up exhausting an entire night (or week). This can turn into a problem if you plan on moving in sooner than you’re ready. It’s always easy to say, “We can finish that later,” but take it from us, it’s easier said than done. Make sure there is enough time to finish all the tasks on your to-do list before the official move-in or trip and leave as few loose ends as possible.

NOT YOUR GRANDPA’S BLUEGRASS ARTICLE BRIANNA BLAIR | PHOTOGRAPHY LADD FORDE

WHY SO MANY HEAVY HITTERS IN TODAY'S BLUEGRASS REVOLUTION CALL THE FRONT RANGE HOME. WITH THE RUGGED LANDSCAPE OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN FOOTHILLS COMES AN UNPARALLELED EVOLUTION IN MUSIC. Bluegrass has swept through the hills and into the towns, echoing the twangs of banjos and mandolins alike. Colorado has guaranteed its place in the hearts of true bluegrass artists, including these three musicians who share with us how the front range has influenced the music they play today.

THERE’S A FEELING OF FREEDOM THAT COMES FROM SEEING THOSE MOUNTAINS EVERY DAY, SO HERE WE ARE, GATHERED TOGETHER IN SEARCH OF FREEDOM AND AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCES. IT TRULY IS A RICH, DIVERSE AREA FOR BLUEGRASS AND I’M SURPRISED MORE PEOPLE HAVE NOTICED WHAT’S HAPPENING OUT HERE MUSICALLY.

ANDY HALL, THE INFAMOUS STRINGDUSTERS Lover of bluegrass, the environment and tattoos, Andy Hall has seen the evolution of bluegrass take flight right before his eyes. Hall has been a member of the Grammy winning band, The Infamous Stringdusters, since their formation in 2005 and plays the dobro. You could describe them as a bluegrass driven, psychedelic jam rock with Southern soul with an air of freedom that is found right here in the front range. “For some reason, there has always been a connection between the mountains and bluegrass music. I think people who seek authenticity gravitate toward both the outdoors and unpretentiousness real music. That makes the front range an active place for bluegrass and the weirdos that make it," says Hall. "There’s a feeling of freedom that comes from seeing those mountains every day, so here we are, gathered together in search of freedom and authentic experiences. It truly is a rich, diverse area for bluegrass and I’m Andy Hall, The Infamous Stringdusters

surprised more people have noticed what’s happening out here musically.” CONTINUED July 2018 | Boulder Lifestyle

PAUL HOFFMAN, GREENSKY BLUEGRASS Paul Hoffman is one of two singer/ songwriters and plays the mandolin in the band. Originally from Michigan, Hoffman moved to Colorado recently. Greensky Bluegrass is known as a progressive rock jam band with bluegrass instruments, and their music reflects acoustic bluegrass instrumentation and lyrical songs that lean heavily toward psychedelic rock. "The Colorado front range is an awesome music community. A lot of cities have seen a specific type of music blossom and become their own, like Seattle grunge, Detroit R&B, Atlanta hip-hop, etc. But Denver seems to be a wealth of success and popularity for all types," Hoffman says. "The progressive bluegrass movement might be bigger here than anywhere else, but we are all sort of from elsewhere, and all the other genres do so well in this city. It's truly a live music mecca.”

THE PROGRESSIVE BLUEGRASS MOVEMENT MIGHT BE BIGGER HERE THAN ANYWHERE ELSE, BUT WE ARE ALL SORT OF FROM ELSEWHERE, AND ALL THE OTHER GENRES DO SO WELL IN THIS CITY. IT’S TRULY A LIVE MUSIC MECCA.

Andy Thorn, Leftover Salmon

THIS FREEDOM HAS BROUGHT SOME OF THE BEST PROGRESSIVE BLUEGRASS MUSICIANS IN THE WORLD TO LIVE IN THE FRONT RANGE OF COLORADO.

ANDY THORN, LEFTOVER SALMON Andy Thorn knew something clicked when he bought a banjo at a neighbor’s yard sale when he was twelve-yearsold. Thorn has been a fan of Leftover Salmon since he was in high school, never thinking that he would someday be a part of the band. But in 2010, Thorn joined the band with his banjo and continued his pursuit of bluegrass from a different point of view. “Growing up in North Carolina, traditional bluegrass was king. That being said, I love that I got to learn the roots of the music there with the old school pickers. But from the first time that I came out to Colorado to play, I sensed a freedom in the growing jam grass movement that wasn’t yet present down South. You could play however you felt without getting judged for being too flashy, or not playing it like ‘Earl [Scruggs].’ This freedom has brought some of the best progressive bluegrass musicians in the world to live in the front range of Colorado. I’ve been here since 2008 and watching the scene explode since then has really been something,” says Thorn. July 2018 | Boulder Lifestyle

PAGE TURNERS YOUR SUMMER READING LIST FEATURING BOULDER AUTHORS

Shelf Life ARTICLE RHIANNON JOHNSON | PHOTOGRAPHY LADD FORDE

BOOKS SOURCED AT Tattered Cover, 2526 E Colfax Ave, Denver, TatteredCovered.com. 92

Boulder Lifestyle | July 2018

YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD FOR A SUMMER READING LIST! Wherever your summer plans are taking you, be sure to bring along one (or all) of these six recent releases from Boulder authors.

ROUGH BEAUTY: FORTY SEASONS OF MOUNTAIN LIVING BY KAREN AUVINEN After choosing to live as a writer in a primitive cabin in the Rockies, award-winning poet Karen Auvinen lost all her possessions and every word she had ever written to a fire. To reconcile her loss, she chose to embrace the beauty, grace, unpredictability and brutality of nature. Spanning her forty seasons in the mountains, Auvinen’s memoir strips bare her conflicting desires of being alone and needing community.

NORTH: FINDING MY WAY WHILE RUNNING THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL BY SCOTT JUREK, JENNY JUREK As one of the world's best known and most beloved ultrarunners, Scott Jurek was inspired to challenge himself even further — by breaking the speed record for the Appalachian Trail. In his memoir, the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and one of Sports Illustrated's Fittest 50, shares the physical and emotional details of his grueling 2,189-mile, 46-day journey.

DIMENSIONAL CLOTH: SCULPTURE BY CONTEMPORARY TEXTILE ARTISTS BY ANDRA F. STANTON, JOSEPHINE STEALEY This inspirational collection features 350 lavish photographs of 3-D cloth configurations accompanied by 78 insightful artist profiles. It also captures the currents powering these works: from England's 1880s arts and craft movement, to the do-it-yourself (DIY) movement of the 1990s, to the current revival of the revolutionary sculptural cloth of the 1960s.

COOKING FOR HORMONE BALANCE BY MAGDALENA WSZELAKI Holistic nutrition coach Magdalena Wszelaki tackles hormone imbalance with her new cookbook, featuring more than 140 recipes. Plus, modifications for each recipe to follow Paleo, Paleo for Autoimmunity (AIP), anti-Candida, and low-FODMAP diets.

GO ASK FANNIE BY ELISABETH HYDE Murray Blaire has invited his three grown children to visit. His only request is “no arguing” yet chaos immediately ensues. The two older children immediately begin bickering about past grievances and the youngest daughter arrives late—talking about possible criminal charges against her. She is also cradling a damaged family cookbook (old edition of Fannie Farmer), the last remaining artifact from a time when they were a family of six, not four, with a father running for Congress and a mother building her own private life.

ZEN AND GONE BY EMILY FRANCE When seventeen-year-old Boulder native Essa meets new-to-town Oliver, they slowly become friends, exploring Boulder and Buddhism at the local zendo. Together, the two decide to set out on a three-day survival game in the Rocky Mountains. When Essa’s nine-year-old sister Puck follows them and then goes missing after a stormy night, Essa must search for her sister — and find herself.
